Trooper calls damage in P.R. ‘unimaginable’ Town councilor Giannone was deployed to island By Ashley Kus The Citizen

After 25 days deployed in Puerto Rico, Connecticut State Police Sgt. Alessandro “Alex” Giannone said the hurricane devastation is “unimaginable.” “Even though it’s four months out, they still need help,” he said. “It’s a complete infrastructure rebuild.”

The Berlin resident and town councilor was one of 13 Connecticut State Troopers deployed to the island at the end of November to assist in recovery efforts after hurricanes Irma and Maria. Metal roofs peeled back, traffic lights destroyed, lack of food, water and, most prominently, electricity were just a few of the conditions Giannone said he witnessed during his deployment. “When we got there we realSee Puerto Rico, A6

A fire at a Berlin house adjacent to a local motel was caused by a problem with an oil burner. The Saturday, Dec. 30 fire damaged the house used by the manager of Mount Royal Inn on the Berlin Turnpike. The fire did not spread to the motel. Steve Waznia, town fire

marshal, said the fire started in the basement oil burner and spread to the first floor. All four fire companies responded.

the homes.

It was the third house fire in town in December. A few weeks earlier, and only days apart, firefighters responded to Parish Drive and Berlin Street for fires.

All three houses were deemed uninhabitable due to the severity of the fires. No injuries were reported.

Local police stopped JoAnn Angelico-Stetson, 56, of East Berlin on Middletown Road, just before 12:30 a.m. after an officer observed her failing to properly signal while making a left turn, according to an arrest summary. Puerto Rico ized how bad it was,” he said adding that the devastation is more evident in person. U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, who returned from a two-day trip to the island with U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal to witness the recovery efforts, expressed similar sentiments in an interview with the Record-Journal.

“If this were happening in the Continental United States, if we were in Connecticut 100 days after a hurricane and half the state didn’t have power, there would be riots in the street,” Murphy said. With nearly half of the island still without power, the heat and humidity has kept many residents on the streets to keep cool during the day.

In today’s competitive career marketplace, imparting soft skills at an early age to students is fundamental to their success. As students begin to plan for their future beyond high school, participants in the Pathways to Success experience will develop the soft skills necessary to transition from school to college, to technical school, or directly into the workforce. In the coming school year JA seeks to reach over 700 Berlin High School students. Comcast hats, scarves drive celebrates 10 years From left: Sean Sexton, Comcast project manager; Greg Beers, Comcast project manager; Andy McCarthy, Comcast vice president of engineering; Kermit Rodriguez, Comcast manager of technical operations; VickyGalo, Comcast administrative assistant who has spearheaded this initiative for the past 10 years; Bill Haas, Comcast finance analyst; AJ Singh, Comcast finance manager.

For 10 years, Comcast employees based in the Western New England headquarters in Berlin, along with friends and family, have knitted and crocheted for a cause. This year the group handmade over 260 hats and scarves, most of which were donated to Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that distributes care packages to active-duty troops, as well as veterans, wounded heroes and emergency first-responders. More than 2,000 pieces have been made and donated since the campaign began.
