CTrail Hartford Line launches website By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

Interested rail passengers can now get information on events, fares and schedules at the new CTrail Hartford Line website launched Thursday, Jan. 11. The state Department of Transportation created the www.hartfordline.com website to give riders insight into what to expect when increased commuter rail service begins in May.

“It will offer more comprehensive information, and be fully functional when the new rail service launches,” Public Transportation Bureau Chief Richard Andreski said in a statement. The $700 million Hartford Line increases rail service from New Haven to Hartford by 11 more trains per day, bringing the total to 17. Twelve will continue north to Springfield. The improvements involved new signaling equipment, double-

tracking the corridor from New Haven to Windsor and building new train stations in Wallingford, Meriden and Berlin. The website features a trip planner tool that allows users to review schedules and plan trips. At this time, the trip planner is a tool for demonstration purposes only, and users will not be able to make reservations or purchase tickets until the Hartford Line service launches. The website operates on a

variety of devices including mobile phones and tablets. It features news and a frequently asked questions section for queries about connecting service options, senior discounts and the permitting of bicycles on trains. The website will add more information on features, including detailed information on connections to other local transit options; interactive, 360-degree views of the stations and milestone events as the service ap-

proaches its launch date. Amtrak trains are included in the Hartford Line schedule and are priced differently. For instance, a seat on a Hartford Line train from Meriden to Hartford for May 16 is priced at $4.50 one way. The Hartford Line site contains links to Amtrak’s reservation website. If booked now, a one-way ticket is $9 for the same date. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255 Twitter: @Cconnbiz

EDITORIAL

The emergency isn’t over yet The news is always moving on — one crisis or scandal or commotion after another, one disaster (whether manmade or natural) after another. It’s hard to keep up. But while many of us may have all but forgotten, Puerto Rico is still a disaster area and in need of urgent help. Less than four months ago the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria just two weeks after Hurricane Irma had paid a call. The storm left at least 499 dead and $94 billion in damage. The people of the American island – which is smaller than Connecticut but has about the same population – were left largely without

drinkable water. The already ramshackle electrical grid run by the financially rickety Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority was left in ruins. But while the headlines and the TV news shows have moved on — to the California wildfires, and the new tax bill, and the conflict with North Korea — the United States citizens of Puerto Rico are still suffering. The death toll continues to rise, in part through diseases spread by unclean water. At year’s end, about half of the island still lacked electricity.

Connecticut state troopers sent to the island at the end of November to assist in recovery efforts — said the hurricane devastation is “unimaginable” and the island needs “a complete infrastructure rebuild.” U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy also went to Puerto Rico to see the damage. “If this were happening in the continental United States, if we were in Connecticut 100 days after a hurricane and half the state didn’t have power, there would be riots in the street,” Murphy said when he returned.

After spending 25 days there, Sgt. Alessandro “Alex” Gian- Faced with this ongoing disaster, many people from none, of Berlin — one of 13

Puerto Rico have taken refuge with relatives on the mainland. The Meriden schools estimate roughly 150 new students already this year, a number that could grow significantly. “The reason the exodus is increasing is that people now just don’t believe the recovery is going to happen,” Murphy said. “They actually don’t think that Washington is committed to rebuilding the island.”

sponses of the White House and of the Federal Emergency Management Administration have been questioned, Romano wonders whether the territorial and local officials on the island have done their part. But this doesn’t need to be a blame game. Whatever logjams or inefficiencies or attitudes are holding up progress, let them be resolved so that the recovery effort can proceed.

Others, such as Connecticut Republican Party Chairman J.R. Romano, criticized Murphy for not offering more specifics on how to fix the problem. While the re-

progress in 2018. A few of these include the former Arby’s on Farmington Avenue (which has a lease currently in place with Arby’s), the former travel agency building on Mill Street, 80 Massirio Drive (which was previously for industrial use but is zoned commercial), the Industrial Surplus property on the Berlin Turnpike as well as other Farmington Avenue buildings that are vacant such as the former Mary’s Bakery. In addition, we hope to see additional develop-

ment on the Berlin Turnpike in the vicinity of the new Acura dealership. Lastly, I will be working to get a large parcel of industrial land subdivided into smaller lots where our growing manufacturing sector and service sectors can build new facilities. In 2018, we wish to focus on bringing new manufacturing firms, food options, retail and services to Berlin. This is not as easy as picking up the phone and saying “Come to Berlin.” Business decisions are made with lo-

cation in mind, but the economics, traffic count and demographics play a large part. As we are in the geographic center of Connecticut, we can boast our location, but this only means we are in a great spot, not that all kinds of firms will choose to locate here. I, myself, would love to see the well-known firms in adjacent communities open an additional location in Berlin. But, on occasion, our town is a location they would not consider at this time, our demographics do not fit their business model, or the right spot is not avail-

Letters to the Editor Concerned parent To the editor: A concerned parent here of a freshman. I am unsure why the kids at a newly renovated high school, that should have proper ventilation, spend so much time outside in all types of weather for so many

“suspicious odors” and “cooking mishaps.” The most recent call in the few short months my son has been in school has got to be the fourth or fifth this year. and not just burnt popcorn.

It may be time to rethink the staff use of appliances during school hours.

I think calls home for silly, fully avoidable issues are becoming a little too frequent for families on edge thinking every evacuation is much more alarming.

No parent wants the added worry of this many robocalls from school about an “emergency” or an evacuation when it could mean a true emergency like a gas explosion or a school shooting,

We pay a ton in taxes and this high school is basically the Ritz in comparison to where many of us went as

kids. The better use of our tax dollars may have been for student-issue personal umbrellas or cold weather gear and not a skylight or fancy technology that goes defunct the day after it is purchased. Thoughts to consider. Suzanne Helm Berlin

NBMC hits a snag on the ice The Newington/Berlin/ Manchester/Cromwell high school hockey team faced off against two conference opponents this past week and came up short both times to fall to 5-2 on the season. In the first game, NBMC played Hall-Southington, and while the local

New leadership should mean new opportunities for growth and needed changes and no doubt that’s something residents will keep close tabs on in the coming year. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of honeymoon unfolds as incoming officials dig into the challenges and responsibilities of managing their big jobs. The following slots were filled as 2017 drew to a close and in most cases, staffing changes recently occurred. In Southington, Town Manager Garry Brumback moved to Florida and long-time town attorney and deputy town manager Mark Sciota got the job. In Cheshire, Town Manager Michael Milone retires in June and Sean Kimball, a Cheshire resident, an acting town manager in Simsbury was appointed to the position. He’ll start in May. Carabetta seeks OK for 25 apartments

From A14

By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

all the while creating and/or implementing long and short term goals.

MERIDEN — Carabetta Cos. is seeking a zone change to build 25 apartments on several lots on North Broad Street.

That’s a long to-do list and likely only scrapes the surface of responsibilities. Many of us onlookers can’t imagine the intricacies involved in these job descriptions which usually include a phrase such as “…and all other duties as needed to fulfill the goals …”

The City Council voted last week to refer the request to the council’s economic development, housing and zoning committee and the Planning Commission. Carabetta seeks a zoning change for 1444 and 1460 N. Broad St. and 18, 29, 30, and 36 Lirot Court. According to City Planner Robert Seale, Carabetta wants to switch the zoning from R-1, which allows single-family homes, to R-3, which allows apartments.

As noted, in several situations, “assistant” or second in command people took on the head positions. While they may be known entities, these folks will have their own ideas, experiences and methodologies. It’ll be important to let them bring those attributes to the job and not get stuck in a “we always did it this way” mentality.

Houses at 1460 N. Broad St., right, and 1444 N. Broad St., far left, in Meriden. Carabetta Cos. is seeking a zoning change to allow it to build 25 apartments in this area of North Dave Zajac, Record-Journal Broad Street.

Carabetta, doing business as Meadow Gardens, bought most of the properties for $220,000 from the Delfavero brothers in May 2016. Carabetta bought 1444 N. Broad St. in September 2017 for $146,000 from Joan Gawel.

Fasano calls on Trump to apologize for immigration remarks By Mark Pazniokas © The Connecticut Mirror

The state Senate’s Republican leader, Len Fasano of North Haven, called Friday for President Trump to apologize for reportedly referring to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa as “these people from shithole countries.” “The comments on immigration reported to have been said by the President are beyond inappropriate and offensive,” Fasano said in a statement issued by his office. “The Republican Par-

ty is one of inclusivity and rooted in the core value of providing all people the opportunity to achieve the Fasano American dream. The statements reported yesterday fly in the face of what it means to be a Republican and an American. The president should apologize for these disrespectful and outrageous comments.” Fasano’s call is noteworthy

because the state senator has tried to keep Connecticut Republicans from being drawn into controversies generated by Trump, both during the 2016 campaign and after Trump took office. Fasano, who declined to be a Trump delegate, has tried to keep the party’s focus on the state’s fiscal challenges.

“This goes to the heart and soul of who I am and what I believe as a person,” Fasano said.

But Fasano grew tired of the constant cycle of a controversial Trump statement or Tweet and consequent demands of how Republicans viewed them. When video showing Trump crudely boasting of his ability as a celebrity to molest women surfaced a month before the election, Fasano said he felt no obligation to disavow a nominee he never supported.

Quoting sources present at a meeting with the president regarding immigration reform, the Washington Post and New York Times reported that Trump grew frustrated at the prospect of extending protections to immigrants from Haiti and other struggling nations where the majorities are black or Hispanic. “Why are we having all these people from shithole coun-
