After 24 years, Kensington Fire Chief Mark Lewandowski has retired and former fire Captain Jeff Pajor is taking his place.
Dancing used to be a dream for Karen Carlson, who was unable to participate due to lifelong respiratory issues. “Since I was a kid I always wanted to take dance lessons,” she said.
“It was the appropriate time to step out,” Lewandowski said.
In March, the Berlin resident will get to perform with her husband Jim at the fourth annual Donate Life Gala in Prospect. Just over a year and a half ago, Carlson Carlson received a double lung transplant after being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
A member of the department since 1980, Lewandowski was presented a plaque for his service during an annual awards event at the Farmington Club earlier this month.
“I was determined to live,” she said. In 2016, Carlson and her family relocated to Durham, North Carolina after waiting four years for a transplant in the NorthSee Transplant, A4

“It’s my first time performing,” she said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”
Though recovery was difficult, Carlson worked to restore her strength through rehabilitation before moving back to Berlin in April 2017.
The phrase, “Can you hear me now?” as a measure of the quality of communication occurring is the perfect slogan for chiropractic in that the objective of the adjustment is to restore proper communication within the body.
Now the 61-year-old is getting back on her feet to raise awareness about the importance of being an organ donor.
When spinal bones misalign and disrupt nerve system function, known as a vertebral subluxation, they create a similar situation to a poor signal on your phone. Tissues and organs can’t function the way they were intended if they’re not receiving proper direction from the brain. This leads to disharmony, imbalance, and disorganization. Lack of communication leads to confusion and discord.

Over time, changes in the heart and blood vessels can lead to a host of devastating problems, including heart attack, heart failure and stroke. On top of that, lifestyle factors, such as poor diet and a lack of physical activity, lead to one in five deaths in the U.S., according to a study published in 2011 in the Journal of Public Health. The good news is as the weeks and months pass, these healthy choices do pay off and make meaningful shifts in your health profile. Turning these choices into habits is well worth the time and effort. Choice by choice, you could see big improvements.

Hopefully, you're already making those annual doctor visits because your blood sugar, blood pressure, weight and cholesterol can all tell us something about our heart health. But what you really want to know is whether there is fatty buildup in your arteries, because toocan lead to stroke, peripheral vascular disease and carotid artery stenosis. Doctor office tests offer indicators and warning signs, but they don't tell you how
Luckily, there's a safe and affordable test that gives you the hard data on what is happening inside your body: vascular screening. If you think learning the truth will discourage you, one study indicates the opposite may be true.

Do you have a hearing loss? Do you...
...frequently ask people to repeat themselves? ...avoid social situations? ...find yourself frequently denying hearing problems? ...turn up the volume on your TV so loud that others complain? ...have difficulty understanding speech in noisy places?
The report published in the Journal of Community Medicine and Health Education says people who had vascular screening reported more positive changes to their health several months after their vascular screening than the control subjects who weren't screened. For example, 61 percent of screened respondents said they ate healthier foods since the screening, versus the 46 percent who were not screened.

Host a Bee this season The New Britain Bees are looking for families in the Central Connecticut area interested in hosting Bees players during the 2018 baseball season. Hosting a Bee is a great way to get involved with the team. The experience provides families with the chance to know a professional athlete in addition to the opportunity to attend every home game during the 2018 season, special events, including an end-ofthe-season picnic where families will take live batting

The Board of Directors of the Berlin High School Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the completion of the permanent location and display of the Hall of Fame.
The Board of Directors wish to thank all who made the permanent display a reality. The establishment of the permanent Hall of Fame at the high school has been an ongoing goal for the board.
Located at Berlin High School, on the second floor, just outside the Media Center, and adjacent to the A Gym, the display recognizes the contributions of past athletes, coaches, teams, and contributors to Berlin athletics.
Once the final location was determined, and fundraising and design were completed, the final installation of the display was delayed until the renovations at the high school were completed in the fall of 2017.
The Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame will conduct a dedication ceremony at the high school on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m., just prior to the Berlin vs. Farmington boys basketball game. The public is invited to attend.
The BHS Hall of Fame was established in 2008. The inaugural class was inducted in May of 2010. Since then, a new class has been recognized each year and a total of 95 individuals and teams are now on display at the high school.

Letter to the Editor Golf commission eager to serve To the editor: On behalf of the newlyformed Timberlin Golf Commission, I would like to thank the Town Council for acknowledging the need for this commission. By placing your trust in our members, you have enabled us to focus on our primary goal, which is to provide the town with a first-rate municipal golf course, while also being fiscally responsible. The commission is com-
prised of golfers with diverse backgrounds and skill sets; from accountants, business owners and retirees to management executives. The collective talents of this group will ensure that all issues related to the management of the course will be addressed. We will examine all of the daily operations of Timberlin, from a financial perspective, and will also collaborate closely with the Director of Golf and the Head Golf Professional to maximize efficiency and, ultimately, recommend course
Email letters to news@theberlincitizen.com; mail to 500 South Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450 or fax to 203639-0210. The Citizen will print only one letter per person each month. Letters should be approximately 300 words. We reserve the right to edit letters. Letters should be on topics of general interest to the community.
It is important that taxpayers are aware of the Timberlin Capital Improvement Fund. Each time a golfer pays greens fee, an additional $12 is collected and deposited into this account. The money generated by the fund, averaging approximately $65,000 per year, is not included as part of the revenue generated at Timberlin and therefore not deposited into the General Fund. Instead, it is set aside in a separate reserve account with the sole purpose of making
Last year, Timberlin partnered with Golf Now, an online tee-time service, which proved to be quite successful. The commission feels that this will continue to be profitable during the upcoming golf season.
We invite the public to attend our monthly commission meetings, held the first Thursday of the month. Check the town website for locations and times of the meetings. Peter DeFazio Chairman, Timberlin Golf Commission
It is our hope to maximize revenue and control costs while providing a positive golfing experience. In the future, we hope to implement course improvements generated by the members of this group.
