Several capital item requests OK’d School budget tabled

By Ashley Kus The Citizen

Several capital item requests for the town and school board were approved by the Board of Finance at a recent budget meeting in the amount of $2.3 million with the addition of $900,000 in bonding to include the replacement of the artificial turf at Sage Park’s Scalise Field.

By Ashley Kus The Citizen

A budget number for the Board of Education is on hold after the Board of Finance agreed to table the decision until this week.

“We can’t really avoid bonding,” said Sam Lomaglio, chairman of the finance board.

“We threw a lot of numbers around,” said Sam Lomaglio, chairman of the finance board.

There was discussion on whether bonding Scalise Field was a good plan regarding the amount of debt the town still has to pay on the high school renovation project. Members of the board agreed to revisit the plan to bond the field on a five-year short term note if need be. The Board of Finance met to discuss the budget recently.

Jexel is a 2-year-old pit mix. He is neutered and anxiously hoping to find a kind, loving home. He has spent most of his life crated and has lots of energy to run. A fenced yard or a jogger who wants a pal would be ideal. Jexel has been working with a dog trainer and is getting better on the leash, but he is very strong and gets distracted easily. Gidget is almost 2years-old and mostly white with red ears and spots. She has been working with the dog trainer and is doing well on a leash. Klingberg Family Centers a leader of trauma-informed care The Traumatic Stress Institute of Klingberg Family Centers, New Britain, an international leader in the field of trauma-informed care, trains and consults to organizations wanting to transform their fundamental approach to serving clients with histories of trauma. Spreading the use of Risking Connection, an acclaimed training model for professionals caring for trauma survivors, and creating the Attitudes Related to TraumaInformed Care (ARTIC) Scale, a psychometrically valid research tool for measuring TIC, are among their innovative contributions.

Interest in trauma-informed care is growing rapidly in the United States and internationally. TSI has been stressing the critical importance of trauma-informed care since 2006 when it began offering Risking Connection trauma training and other consulta-

tion services. Twelve years later, 50 agencies in the United States, more than half of which are in Connecticut, and two Canadian Provinces use Risking Connection to establish an agency culture that is healing for survivors. This translates to over 5,000 Connecticut mental health and education professionals receiving TSI training about how to make the fundamental shift from asking those they serve “what’s wrong with you?” to asking “what happened to you?” TSI’s revenue has more than doubled in the last two years as a result of it increased visibility and the explosion in TIC awareness worldwide.

COMMENTARY

There’s help to make prom affordable By Olivia L. Lawrence

The high school prom, that magical rite of passage – or sometimes nerve-wracking, anxiety inducing teen event – creates a memory we look back on, probably with some laughter, and definitely with nostalgia for “those were the days, my friend.” I went to senior prom with a fellow chess club member. We decided that likely nobody was going to want to go with us and we didn’t want to wait around fretting, so why not? Yes, it was that nerdy but ultimately we had a blast.

Kristen’s Kloset, sponsored by Southington Youth Services, offers help to all area girls planning to attend prom. The Kloset is open for just two days this year: Friday, March 23, 4:30 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, March 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Southington High School, 720 Pleasant St.

It’s way more fun to think about fashion trends and figure out what you want to wear than worry about the moola – as it should be. As one CHS student put it, “We go all out.”

Still, as Issac noted, when it comes to their outfits, most guys are “looking for a cheapest thing possible.” Some local organizations also are trying to help ease the financial burden for prom goers.

In Cheshire, a student prom committee has been planning for its senior class prom since fall and they’re well aware that the costs attached can be daunting. Given the price of a prom ticket, coming in around $90 to cover expenses, fundraising is a must and so the committee has worked to raise a couple thousand dollars to help offset costs.

Proceeds from the sale of dresses, along with donations sent in from the community, are available to help offset the cost of renting a tux or purchasing prom tickets or even flowers. However, that assistance is only available to Southington High School students.

But before the festivities began, I pretty much freaked out about the expense that we’d gotten ourselves into and this was back when things were a lot simpler and cheaper. Today the sticker shock of prom night continues to present a financial challenge for many families.

A new, proactive diabetes treatment

CATS OF THE WEEK

By Dr. Martin Opoku Gyamfi

Simon is a large, handsome brown tabby. He is in search of a new home because his caregiver died. Simon is quiet and does prefer the company of men. Hopefully a kind, nurturing gentleman will step up for Simon and offer him a home. Honor is a lovely 10-month-old girl. She is very playful and loves other cats. Her best friend in her foster home is a male cat, so she would love to have a buddy to play with. Visit www.hucatrescue.org for details on Hearts United Cat Rescue planned spring cleaning drive. Despite all of the research that has been available to us for more than 60 years, diabetes is still a devastating disease that impacts an increasing number of patients. It is not for a lack of investment in research, but because most of the research funding and treatment approaches have focused on the wrong issues. To the average person, diabetes is a “sugar disease” and so the common sense way of dealing with it is to reduce sugar intake or eliminate all carbohydrates from the diet. Unfortunately, the prevailing medical treatment of diabetes, which is no different from the approach of the average person, is to manage the blood sugar in an attempt to prevent vascular complications, such as blindness, kidney disease, heart disease, stroke, impo-

tence, foot and leg amputation, hearing impairment and nerve damage. This approach has failed, and continues to fail, in keeping diabetes in check. Why is the gold standard treatment plan falling short? Because even though the hallmark of diabetes is high blood sugar, this is merely a symptom of an underling issue. The primary problem is fat poisoning of the body tissues. Fat deposits in the cells of various organs such as the liver, pancreas and muscles. The tissues then become resistant to the action of insulin. Because the key responsibility of insulin is to drive blood sugar into the cells, insulin resistance eventually leads to high blood sugar. ProNatural Physicians Group’s Diabetes Reversal Clinic involves a nutritional program and a supplement regimen to help the body cleanse itself of the fat deposits while restoring insulin responsiveness. We can further prevent the cycle of fat poisoning and insulin resistance by reducing the overall consumption of fat and cholesterol and increasing physical activity. ProNatural Physicians Group’s program is designed to help reverse diabetes and provide results in as little as three months. ProNatural Physicians Group, 120 Webster Square Road, can be reached at 860829-0707. Or visit www.pronaturalphysicians.com.

“Diabetes is as invisible as it is deadly, impacting our families and our communities. Every 21 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes. Diagnosis means you are much more likely to go blind. To lose a limb. To die of a heart attack or a stroke. Millions more are at high risk of developing diabetes. We must take a bold action and increase our investment in research to turn this tide. With your support, together, we can continue to fight back.” - American Diabetes Association

New leadership and new opportunities By Chris Edge

Members of the finance board discussed potential increases ranging from a little less than $1 million to $1.5 million for the school board which has requested a $1.8 million increase from last year. Brian Benigni, superintendent of Berlin schools, said during a recent budget presentation that the school budget has seen a five-year average increase of 1.94 percent, which has impacted

man of the finance board.

“If we were able to receive an additional half a percent over the last five years we wouldn’t be sitting at a 4.3 (percent), we’d be sitting around a 2.3,” he said.

Members of the board agreed that public safety components, including new trucks and police cruisers, are among the most significant requests for next year.

The district is looking at filling two currently unfilled positions by the summer. The assistant superintendent and high school principal positions are being reviewed with interviews expected soon.

Jim Simons, Berlin fire administrator and former fire chief, said patrol cars needed to be replaced as well as dump trucks. A lease-to-purchase option was discussed for three truck replacements.
