Rail line launch ‘exciting’ By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

NEW HAVEN — The cars are 30 years old with no internet and no bathrooms, but no one was complaining Friday as Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, lawmakers and rail workers took an inaugural ride on the state’s newest rail line.

Valedictorian is Harvard-bound By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Even with a 101.6 grade-point-average on a 100-point scale, multiple extracurricular activities and volunteer work, Berlin High School valedictorian Ashley Bryant was surprised when she received word of her acceptance to one college in particular. "It was really, really shocking. It was one of those things, you never expect

to get into Harvard, so I'm obviously very humbled and very honored to have been accepted," said Bryant, who is considering majoring in history, economics, or a business-oriented field at the Ivy League university. In addition to her high marks, she was varsity tennis captain, being the Spring Scholar Athlete for the past two years, captain of the color guard, a member of the band and mentored

students at Griswold Elementary School through the Upbeat Program. She was also a 2018 Disney Scholar, the first CT Governor's Scholar in the history of Berlin High School and a National Merit Commended Student, among other achievements in and outside of Berlin High School. All of those instilled a strong sense of focus and time management in her See Grad, A19

”This is a day to remember,” Malloy said as he cut the ribbon on Track 3 at Union Station. “This is an exciting new chapter in transportation and economic development. We need to modernize rail in America and I’m very proud Connecticut is showing how to do it.” The CTrail Hartford Line train bound to Hartford picked up passengers along the way. In Wallingford, Malloy greeted state Rep. Mary Mushinsky, D-Wallingford, North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda and Wallingford Town Councilor John LeTourneau. ”It’s been a long time comSee Rail, A11

EDITORIAL

Help available to prevent suicide From Socrates to Marilyn Monroe, and from Cleopatra to Vincent Van Gogh to Ernest Hemingway to Robin Williams, many famous people throughout history have chosen to take their own lives. Sometimes we think we understand why — perhaps they received a devastating medical diagnosis or were facing a long prison term. In other cases, though, the war they lost was with their own psychic demons, and the pain they could no longer endure was mental rather than physical. That’s when we tend to turn away — in part because we don’t understand it and in

part because there’s still a stigma that attaches to anything involving mental illness. Suicide rates rose dramatically in this country between 1999 and 2016. Up 25 percent nationally, it is now the No. 10 leading cause of death overall, and No. 2 among teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials also estimate that 25 percent of drug-overdose deaths are suicides. Connecticut is a bit better off than the nation overall, with a 19 percent increase, but the rate has almost doubled in New Hampshire and Vermont. In North Dakota,

The recent suicides of fashion designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain have called attention to this alarming trend, even if, so far, no one seems to be able to explain it. But there’s no point in waiting for an explanation before doing what the CDC and other organizations involved in public health, including groups on social media, are doing: encouraging people to talk about mental health in order to remove the stigma; and urging those who are having thoughts of suicide to seek help. Andrea Duarte, director of the Suicide Prevention Program at the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, said anyone who believes a friend or

Dr. Michalski notes, “we have seen a significant increase in certain patterns of decay in our patients that drink mostly bottled water. How can you make sure you and your family, especially children, are getting the right amount of fluoride protection in bottled water? Check the label or, if not shown, contact the company and ask what level of fluoride the water contains. One ppm is equal to 1mg/L. If low fluoride levels are a concern, Dr. Michalski recommends that this be discussed with your dentist to explore if a preventive fluoride regimen should be considered.

If bottled water is your main source of drinking water, you could be missing the decay-preventive benefits of fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral that helps prevent tooth decay. To receive the benefits of fluoride, water should contain 0.7 to 1.2 ppm of fluoride. The towns of Newington, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield are all served by MDC, which reports fluoride levels of 0.85 to 1.05 ppm in the city water supply. federal government paid about $200 million.

”It’s a system that has wide connections in the region,” Redeker said. “Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent in economic development around the train stations.” The lack of bathrooms on the trains was a last minute snag caused when the Federal Railroad Administration withdrew an exemption for not having handicapped bathrooms. As a result, the rail line had to lock all the bathrooms. Compliant bathrooms should be completed next winter, according to a DOT spokesman. Once in Hartford, the governor and lawmakers met with officials from Massachusetts who rode the Hartford Line from Springfield. About 250 DOT employees, state and federal lawmakers and the media attended a dedication at the Great Hall of Union Station in Hartford. ”This is because of the courage of your governor,” said U.S. Rep. Richard Neal of western Massachusetts. “There are too many people who want to go to the ground-breakings and ribbon-cuttings but don’t want to commit to the spending.”

Neal told the crowd Mas-

Charlie Baker has finally agreed to fund a study that looks at the benefit of an east-west service through Massachusetts “that will greatly benefit Connecticut.” Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin told the crowd that most of Hartford’s employees live outside the city and between CTfastrak and the Hartford Line, they can find alternative ways to travel. “This is a project that involved an awful lot of people,” said former U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut. “There was a time the U.S. led the world in ideas like this. Then we sort of gave up on this idea and we let other people take the

lead. I can’t tell you how good it feels to be back in my beloved state to see us once again in Connecticut leading the way in the country.”

“I’m optimistic,” Freda said. “The first stage has been funded.” Tom Mik, a Meriden native, left his job with a freight operator to work for the CTrail. He is now a transportation supervisor overseeing the train operations.

“It went great as far as I was concerned,” Mik said about Freda said a North Haven the inaugural run. “Most of station would be off State us came from freight rail and Street at the Route 40 connector and would be the first the equipment is different.” stop out of New Haven. Massachusetts recently spent $94 million to renovate Union Station in Springfield and the Pioneer Valley is improving its track line to the Vermont border. But getting commuter rail service from Springfield to Worcester is a steep hurdle because of rail ownership issues and opposition from local bus companies.

The state Department of Transportation and Amtrak added new signals and equipment at grade crossings. Meriden, Wallingford and Berlin received new train stations. About 25 new positions were created to operate the trains, said DOT Commissioner James Redeker.

Other improvements to the line include double-tracking from Windsor to Springfield, and adding three tracks and a new station in Hartford. That work will follow completion of work on the Interstate 84 viaduct in Hartford, Redeker said.

Do you remember when you used to wrap rubber bands as tight as you could around your fingertips as a kid? What would happen if you did that today? And then ignored the throbbing, pulsing, burning pains that you felt—warning signs that something was wrong. Eventually your fingertip would die and fall off. Did you know that shepherd’s actually use this method to get rid of their sheep’s tails? That’s what subluxation (spinal misalignment) does on the inside of your body! Subluxations block your brain’s message (nerve impulses) to vital organs and every other function in your body, causing a break-down that leads to the death of the organ, tissue, or even the whole individual. This is a great way to understand subluxations (spinal misalignments) and how chiropractic adjustments work to help resolve health problems from back pain, digestive issues, headaches to ear infections. which she credits with complementing her academic achievements.

"I think it's really interesting to learn about things that have actually happened in the past and see how their effects are still seen in today's society," she said.

"I'm not super great at tennis, but I do think it's really good to be part of a team and to experience competition on the court like that. It's been really rewarding for me,” she said. But it was history which left the strongest impression on

“I think she enjoyed the challenge, she had a strong ability to apply her historical knowledge,” said Lynn Addamo, who taught Bryant her freshman year for World

and People and junior year for AP United States History. “She was a wonderful student.” Addamo said Bryant excelled at not only learning historical details, but also being able to understand their implications, while questioning the reliability of a source of information.

When peers ran into problems in Addamo’s class, Bryant’s willingness to lend a hand stuck out to the teacher. She remembered one instance during a group project where a student was having difficulty working up the nerve to engage in the presentation. Bryant gave her encouragement.

That collaborative environment, among students and teachers, helped Bryant excel herself, the teenager said. "It was never really a competitive or cut-throat environment. It was more collaborative and supporting each other. And it was just whoever got it, we were always happy for each other.”
