An exhausting fundraiser By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Even for three seasoned golf professionals, playing 100 holes in a row is an exhausting endeavor.

Blueberries ready at Hrubiec Farm By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

For 62 years, Southington resident Judy Kizilski has walked the rows of blueberry bushes at Hrubiec Farm in Berlin, filling the homemade blueberry holder her mother taught her to make when they started going to the farm together when she was 10. “It’s just a tradition with me,” she said. Kizilski and her husband, Chic Smedes, were among the first at the farm on Monday, July 9 for the farm’s first full week of blueberry picking this year. When Smedes drove by the farm on the way home recently and saw a sign saying the blueberry season had begun, he rushed home to tell his wife so they could go. With 67 years in operation, stories like Kizilski’s are See Blueberries, A13

The marathon outing generated funds for the Connecticut Professional Golfers’ Association Golf Foundation and the many programs it supports. The threesome’s fundraising effort started around a month and a half before the nearly 12-hour, 100-hole slog, which took place at Shuttle Meadow. They’ve raised over $3,000 and will continue taking contributions through October.

Marc Bayram, head golf professional at Timberlin Golf Course, played 100 holes of golf at Shuttle Meadow Country Club to raise money for the CTPGA Golf Foundation and the Berlin High School golf teams. Devin Leith-Yessian, The Citizen

Blueberry picking is open at Hrubiec Farm in Berlin. With over 5,000 bushes to pick from, the season will continue well into August. Devin Leith-Yessian, The Citizen

“I can tell I’m getting old because I’m as sore as I’ve ever been,” said Timberlin Golf Course pro Marc Bayram, who played 100 holes with fellow professionals Tim Gavronski, of Shuttle Meadow Country Club, and Kyle Hedstrom, of Stanley Golf Course, on Monday, July 9.

Implants are an excellent option for patients who have lost some or all of their teeth, or for those who may be in danger of losing teeth in the future due to gum disease or decay issues. Implants are titanium posts inserted into the bone where the tooth’s root used to be. Because titanium is biocompatible, it fuses with the bone and becomes a part of the patient’s mouth, stimulating a tooth root. This keeps the bone living and stimulated. It prevents further tooth loss and keeps your face youthfully supported. A dental implant can replace one tooth, or a full set of top and bottom implants can be securely attached to these titanium posts in one of his top procedures, the “All on 4” fixed implant bridge. The “All on 4” teeth-in-a-day has quickly become one of Dr. Michalski’s most popular procedures. Because he is also a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Michalski has the unique ability to plan both the surgery and the final smile design. The procedure replaces the problem teeth and the IV sedation he offers creates a relaxed experience. Since your jaw, teeth and bones have individual characteristics, Dr. Michalski uses his-in-house CT scanner for precise implant measurement and 3-dimensional visualization to fully understand the structure of each person’s jaw. Combining his expertise and advanced equipment, he is able to locate the best bone structure, check for bone loss and choose the ideal implant placement sites for the patient.

“Through this procedure we take implant dentistry a step above,” said Michalski. “We take teeth out and the same day put teeth in. We provide our patients with IV sedation and they wake up with new teeth.” As one of his advanced procedures is dental implants, Dr. Michalski is a leader in his field. He has attained Diplomate status in the International College of Oral Implantology, the highest honor in the field. He is a Misch Fellow, a graduate of numerous post doctorate training curriculums and has trained and studied with the best implant surgeons in the world. “I am able to show people what their dental implant options are and change their lives. We use art and science to take a patient from a smile they dislike to one they love by creating their perfect smile,” he said. Dr. Michalski is accepting new patients. Appointments for evaluations and consultations are available on weekdays and may be made by calling 860-563-4544, or visiting the website www.michalskidmd.com.

Something is wrong To the editor: Well, another year, and another unbelievable tax increase. It's the same story every year. We are presented with a huge potential increase in taxes, we vote it down (not once, but twice.) Then they go back to their desks and ceremoniously shave some money off, and here we are, the tax payers, stuck with another tax increase no matter what. It's a game. A racket. When we complain, we hear the usual threats: No sports for our children, and we will be sitting in trash.

Letters Policy

Letter to the Editor and even eclipses the remainder of the pie. Something is wrong.

A7

Email letters to news@theberlincitizen.com; mail to 500 South Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450 or fax to 203-6390210.

Even though the residents of Berlin voted no to any tax increases, and especially to the budget for the Board of Education, Mr. Lomaglio doesn’t think we know what we’re talking about. He even felt the need to put it out there that he didn't lower the Board of Education budget a slim dime.

Hungerford Programs

The Orchestra?

Most people who have never played in an orchestra may not have an indepth understanding of the nuances involved in creating harmony in a musical performance. First all of the instruments must be in tune and tuned to one another. Second, all the players must execute the right notes at the right time. To further create the beautiful music, the musicians must know when to play loudly or softly, how fast and how slow, and finally, they must know when to stop playing or rest. All bands and orchestras follow the lead and cues of a conductor. The conductor holds the “score” or master sheet of music that contains all of the various instruments’ parts. All the musicians must pay strict attention to and follow the direction of the conductor. The human body functions a lot like an orchestra. The various parts of the body are like each of the players, the nerve system is like the conductor, and the innate intelligence of the body is like the score or master sheet of music/information. The innate intelligence uses the nerve system to tell our body parts how to work in harmony with one another. It tells parts when and how to work and more importantly when to slow down or stop working for a while in order to keep balance. Keep your body in tune, see a Chiropractor.

Is your dog showing a loss of activity, appetite? By Linda Marino

This time of year most of us with dogs in the family are aware of the nuisance of ticks, and the possibility of Lyme disease as a result. Although cats can also attract ticks, they are not subject to developing Lyme disease. We at the Animal Haven want to alert pet owners to the perils of Lyme and how to recognize it, prevent it and treat it.

The deer tick is a small tick that feeds on many species, including deer, rodents, dogs, cats, humans, many other mammals and birds.

Most tick-killing products are not repellants, but will kill the ticks within that time frame, thus preventing the disease.

“Lameness may shift from leg to leg with Lyme disease. An affected joint can be very painful when manipulated, so owners should be careful when examining their pet,” says Cary. “Your best friend may snarl and act out.” Diagnosing Lyme disease in the dog can be done by observing typical symptoms and having your veterinarian run a very sensitive blood test for Lyme antibodies. If there are symptoms and a positive test, treatment can be initiated. Many dogs can show a positive test, but be asymptomatic. They may not need treatment, but should be watched carefully. Several antibiotics can be used to treat Lyme disease. Your veterinarian will make that call, usually dispensing doxycycline. Symptoms are usually gone in 24-48 hours, but the month-long course of medication should be completely given to prevent a recurrence or a chronic Lyme disease problem from developing. “The disease can affect both our canine companions and us, although we do not spread it to each other,” Cary says. “Precaution and prevention is the best defense. It’s better not to contract Lyme disease in the first place than to have to undergo treatment.” Prevention of Lyme disease certainly starts with tick control. There are many good See Dog, A15

Judy Kizilski, of Southington, left, speaks to Kate Scappini, whose family owns Hrubiec Farm in Berlin.

Blueberries

“It’s like a family tradition,” Scappini said. “Once they come once, they’re hooked.” While the farm grows beets, cabbage and raspberries, it’s the 5,000 pick-your-own blueberry bushes people get excited for, she said. Hrubiec Farm grows a few different highbush cultivars, which have branches higher off the ground than most varieties. This makes it easier to get at harder to reach berries and don’t require bending over while picking. The bushes have also thrived

Gabriela Pszczolkowski, of Southington, said she’s been bringing her kids for years to all enjoy time together and eat some delicious blueberries at the end.

Many families are now in their third generation of visitors, with children of longtime pickers sifting through the leaves for berries.

Scappini said the berries have been a hit with local families with Polish roots, who use them as a popular pierogi filling. Walking through the fields, she often hears the language winding through the bushes and when she asked one woman how long she had been coming, the woman answered “around 30 years” in Polish.

Nala is a sweet, affectionate girl. She loves people and attention. Samson and Dalila are 16-weekold siblings. They are lots of fun and both make very unique sounds as they run back and forth in the house. Their markings are beautiful. Meet them at the adoption event, Saturday, July 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Petsmart, 267 Berlin Turnpike. For more information, call 860-8285287 or visit www.fobac.org.

Families and individuals who are in danger of having their utility services terminated due to financial hardship should call 211 to see if they are eligible for energy assistance. Currently, there are more than 320,000 low and moderate income households statewide that can’t afford their energy bills. During 2017, more than 52,000 households had their electricity disconnected because of non-payment, according to the state of Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority.
