Students build robots, learn programming By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Sprinting between rooms cradling Legos, wires and other electronics, fifth and sixth graders in the Berlin FIRST Lego League rushed to make sure the robots they created could cross a table, press a button and return to the starting line on their own.

Four to be interviewed for public works job By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

The application period for the Public Works Director job has ended and town officials are now screening four applicants.

“This is their fourth day of building and it’s amazing,” said Paul Coccomo, 17, one of the members of Berlin High’s FIRST Robotics Competition team.

“I want someone who’s a good manager. I want someone who has a public works background,” said Town Manager Jack Healy.

Coccomo volunteered to mentor the 13 children in the fifth and sixth grade league and seven youngsters on the fourth and fifth grade team. The camp was held at Berlin High School July 19.

The opening was created when Healy was promoted from Public Works Director to Town Manager in April. Healy had previously served as Town Manager in an interim role while working as Public Works Director.

The teams designed, built and programmed the robots to complete tasks, such as pushing a lever or grabbing a segment of pipe and removing it.

three teams the older children divided into.

The applicants will be interviewed by a panel including Healy, Human Resources Director Denise Parsons, Public Building Commission Vice Chair Thomas Reid, Democratic Town Council member Peter Rosso and Republican Deputy Mayor Brenden Luddy.

“It got them to be creative with putting a robot together and learning programming,” said family and consumer science teacher Pam Dennis, who ran the program alongside retired technology education teacher Paul Griswold.

“I liked programming and building. I liked everything,” said fifth grader Emersyn Wolski. “At first the programming and coding seemed difficult, but I got better at Dennis said the high school menit.” tors get their younger peers excited about science and technology. She was one of the members of the Crazy Legos team, one of the

Healy said, the ideal applicant would have a public works background with an emphasis on long-term planning, a collaborative mindset and a willingness to meet with the public to hear their wants See Interviews, A4

CATS OF THE WEEK Mercedes is an exotic, slinky 12-week-old kitten who we held back because she was so small. It turns out that she’s just very petite. Mercedes has a big personality and likes to admire herself in the mirror! Ruby is a beautiful, tortoiseshell. She is very loving and affectionate. Ruby tolerates other cats but prefers the company of people. Ruby does not come to our adoption events because of her asthma, so she does not get the same exposure as the other adult cats. Schedule an appointment to visit Ruby in her foster home. For more information, visit www.hucatrescue.org, call 860479-5173 or email hucatrescue@gmail.com.

Following college, Bob taught mathematics at Penny High School in East Hartford. He also worked for a brief period at The Hartford before joining Aetna, initially as a programmer before becoming an information technology trainer. He spent 17 years at Aetna. Teaching was his passion and he was renowned for his “ugly” tie collection. After leaving Aetna, Bob formed his own training company and had great success. He retired in 2016 and was enjoying it to the fullest. For the past 47 years, he hosted “The Kitchen Sink of Jazz” at WRTC-FM in Hartford where he was the jazz coordinator and more recently, the general manager of the station. He played key roles in the station’s annual fundraiser, broadcasting Trinity football and ice hockey games and

Operation Fuel taking assistance applications Operation Fuel’s statewide network of fuel banks are accepting energy assistance applications from Connecticut households. Families and individuals who are in danger of having their utility services terminated due to financial hardship should call 211 to see if they are eligible for energy

assistance. Currently, there are more than 320,000 low and moderate income households statewide that can’t afford their energy bills. During 2017, more than 52,000 households had their electricity disconnected because of non-payment, according to the state of Connecticut

Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. For the past fiscal year, which ended June 30 2018, Operation Fuel helped 7,232 households with more than $3.1 million in energy assistance. The annual winter moratorium, which prevents quali-

fied households from having their electricity and gas shut off, ended on May 1 and doesn’t resume until Nov. 1, 2018.

teachers continue to do their job despite the negative tone of some. At no time during the budget season did the majority party give the BOF any advice or direction regarding the issues at task because they are fresh out of new ideas and just continue to use scare tactics to divide the community in order to seek re-election. Do not let them fool you. This majority council says one thing publicly and does another thing privately. They have divided the town with their lies and mistruths. Enough is enough! Given the financial disarray the BOF inherited, we will work to balance the budget, stabilize taxes and pay down debt. Let the Board of Finance do its job.
