Berlin native racing up NASCAR ranks By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Five races in, Berlin native Ryan Preece is having his best season yet in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. “I’m competitive. I would say (racing) feeds the fire when it comes to that competitive nature,” Preece, 27, said.
By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Preece finished 1st in the April 14 race at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee and has placed in the top five an additional three times.
A local landowner is in the early stages of seeking approval to build a new street and 18 homes off Ice Pond Lane.
“It was definitely pretty cool because when you look at Bristol, it’s a track that most racers around the country, they want to win at,” he said.
A public hearing is scheduled on the proposal at the next Inland Wetland and Water Courses Commission on Tuesday, Sept. 11. The commission is currently reviewing the application, which was filed by Main Street resident Ray DeCormier.
Preece and NASCAR star Joey Logano, of Middletown, got their start at some of the same local race tracks. For a year or two in the late 1990s, Preece and Logano honed their skills at the Silver City Quarter Midget Club in Meriden. “That’s where myself and Joey Logano, we all got started,” Preece said. “You can tell that there’s a bond there, and it started here,” said Wendi Cordova, publicity director for the club. “We’re very proud of the fact that Ryan is doing as well as he is,” she said. “He’s an excellent role model for our kids.” While watching Preece’s win at Bristol, she was elated to see that Logano See NASCAR, A13

Deputy Director of Public Works Jim Horbal said the plan does not appear to impact the wetlands, and none of the homes are being built on wetlands or in Bradley Brook’s flood plain. Centerfolds’ owner looks to reopen site as eatery By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
The owner of the former the adult entertainment club Centerfolds is looking to open a restaurant on the property. Demolition and building permits have been issued for 1861 Wilbur Cross Highway for an estimated value of around $150,000. Interior walls and floors will be removed, which is part of a plan to open a new restaurant, according to the permits.
Property owner Mario Pirozzoli was not available to comment. Centerfolds has been closed since January. The club, which featured exotic dancers, was the subject of a police investigation in 2016. The investigation found the club violated ordinances after a police report detailed inappropriate touching and simulated sex acts involving performers. The town suspended Centerfolds’ license to have performers on site for 21 days.

The Department of Consumer Protection also found the conduct to be in violation of its liquor permit and issued a $3,000 fine in 2017. Pirozzoli also owns the adjacent vacant Pure Pizza building. The Building Department has not received any permit applications for that property. dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

Letters to the Editor Check the record
Joe must go
To the editor:
To the editor:
Joe Aresimowicz’s campaign signs state: “Father, Coach, Veteran.”
Did you know liberal Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz never saw a tax increase he didn’t like
Let’s think about what Joe’s record shows. Joe’s silent about his record, which reflects his dismal disregard for growth in Connecticut businesses and our wallets. Businesses are saddled with crippling taxes that he and his buddy Malloy enacted. Their actions sent businesses, seniors and young people fleeing from Connecticut. Joe doesn’t want to run on his record because he knows you won’t like it. The two highest tax increases in Connecticut, the two largest spending bills in Connecticut. All under Joe’s watch as majority speaker. Joe’s job in the House is to represent the people, but his allegiance is to the unions. Joe’s worked very hard for higher increases for union salaries and bonuses, with little regard for how to pay for the costs. These actions confirm Joe doesn’t represent the best interest of the citizens that elected him. To keep Joe as a state representative will lead to greater financial catastrophe for Berlin and Connecticut residents. We must do better if we want Connecticut to regain our footing. We need new leadership. We can’t have growth and tax relief under Joe’s watch. It’s time to say goodbye to Joe Arsemiowicz. Don’t vote for someone because you think you know him. Vote on his record. Joe’s record has hurt all of Connecticut.
Dan Malloy and Speaker Aresimowicz are a match made in tax heaven. Did you know that with Gov. Malloy’s approval Joe voted for both of the largest tax increases in Connecticut’s history? These tax increases dwarfed the “temporary” state income tax we all suffer with today. Here is Speaker Joe’s response for voting yes to both of the largest tax increases in Connecticut’s history: “Yes, I have. But, I have also insisted that every program, every agency, every line-item funded by taxpayers be justified and held accountable.” Well, with a billion dollar deficit it’s undeniable that Joe isn’t being “accountable.” Speaker Aresimowicz clearly has a spending problem. Does taking more tax dollars from you make you and your family better off?
Voters, Joe needs to go. Remember this November. Scott Veley Berlin
We deserve better To the editor: The economy is booming everywhere except Connecticut. Why is this? Could it possibly have something to do with Connecticut’s $70 billion deficit? (Includes Connecticut pension obligations.) In spite of taxpayers being saddled with the two largest tax increases in our state’s history, businesses are still closing their doors, pulling up stakes and leaving in droves. Our neighbors, seniors and college students are packing up and moving to thriving, friendlier tax states. Where are our state representatives in this mess? Where is Joe Aresimowicz? Where is Cathy Abercrombie?

Instead of assuming a leaderJoan Veley ship role, Joe chose to make a joke out of GE’s departure. Berlin
Fresh face needed To the editor: I am excited about the young man, Steve Baleshiski from Southington, who is running against Joe Aresimowicz this November to
Joe has been there for quite awhile and has worked hand-in-glove with Gov. Malloy to increase our taxes and increase state spending. It’s time for representation that works for all of us, not just those who happen to be in state unions or are state contractors. Let’s take every citizens’ well-being into account, not just the chosen few.
To this day, the majority council, the Mayor, and others, have not stood up for Berlin education. As far as a zero tax increase, we have discussed it word for word in letters to the editor. Your opinion of what zero is might be different than mine but you did mention a flat tax in your letter.
As far as the council working diligently to try to decipher how to handle cuts from the state, you should know better than to make a comment And please, let’s stop borsuch as this. I will continue to be a vocal advocate for the residents and tax payers of this town.
Facts are facts To the editor: George, you missed the point in my commentary. I defended the educational system and its teachers after they were rudely insulted in a letter to the editor.

As an example, Forrest Machine, previously located in Rocky Hill, chose Berlin when they were looking to expand their facility. The addition of this manufacturing facility will add tax

This economic growth along with the pay-down of our debt will help us over the next few years to stabilize our taxes and put more funding toward capital improvements. As the mayor, along with the Republican majority on the Town Council, I am committed to the long-term vitality of our town and will continue to approve fiscally responsible budgets that serve the needs of all our residents.
