Potential school savings detailed
TIME FOR THE FAIR
By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

These calls came after the presentation of a draft of the Strategic Planning Study commissioned by the BOE to find cost savings in the school system. The Berlin Fair kicks off Friday, Sept. 14 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 16. Look inside for schedules, see what musical acts are coming, and learn about what’s new at the fair this year. senior center not designed for their needs. "It's just a plan for now and we don't See Senior, A17

Study From A1
Morisse-Corsetti, PTA president at Hubbard Elementary School.
East Berlin resident Jessica Silva is opposed to the latter idea, and told a story about the Hubbard principal visiting her son when he was recovering from an illness. "Where else, besides Hubbard or a small neighborhood school, would a principal come to the student's house and sit down on a floor with him? In a bigger school, Jonathan would have been lost, his story would have been unheard and nobody would have come to visit,” Silva said.
staffing reductions. The first four plans (A, B, C and D) see varying degrees of funding for maintaining the schools as they are or renovating them, while the final two (E and F) include closing Hubbard. n A. Base fund the schools and conduct regular maintenance on an annual basis, with repairs made when they are needed. n B. Similar
funding and maintenance, but with funding for emergency repairs
budgeted ahead of time to avoid bonding. n C. Specific
renovations to the schools to improve learning and reduce the need for future repairs, with potential maintenance savings down the road. n D.
More extensive renovations, with the demolition of expensive-to-run temporary classrooms at Griswold school and broad, multi-year upgrades. n E.
Close Hubbard school and renovate or expand

Letters to the Editor Supports Baleshiski To the editor:
Connecticut businesses and individuals are moving out; can’t afford to stay in this state. It’s time for a change if there’s any chance of a future for our children in Connecticut.
To the editor:
Well, there you have it folks. Straight from Mr. Lomaglio himself. We can vote no to any and all tax increases and it won't matter to him. We will have an increase anyVote in November and supway. Nevermind staying port Steve Baleshiski as our within a budget, cutting state representative, a young spending or, heaven forbid, conservative Republican that cutting out anything at the will look out for your pocket. BOE. Sal Bordonaro Nope. We will just have to Berlin shell out more and more, year after year. That's re-
sponsible? I hate to tell you what would become of my personal finances if I did that. I would be bankrupt in short order.

Fair will feature new talent competition
Fair president talks tickets, music By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Fairgoers can skip the Berlin Fair ticket line this year. Fair President John Zarotney said the Lions Club decided to sell tickets through the fair’s website to allow people to get inside faster. “If it’s as hot as it was last year we want to get people in the fair and not cooking in the sun,” he said. Those buying tickets ahead of time can save some money on food. A promotional code on the fair’s website also unlocks a 30 percent discount.
The Lions Club also revealed more than a dozen musicians who will play, with genres ranging from country to 1980s rock. “It’s a good variety. It hopefully pleases people’s different tastes in music,” Zarotney said.

Local singers, magicians and other performers won’t be confined to watching the “professionals” on stage at the Berlin Fair.
The 1980s cover band Aquanett, known for performing songs by Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Bon Jovi and Poison, will headline Friday night alongside Braiden Sunshine, a blues musician who appeared on NBC’s “The Voice.”
Other acts playing throughout the weekend include the Shiny Lapel Trio and Frank Breen on Friday, Jake Kulak and the Lowdown and Ryan Hart and the Blue Hearts on Saturday, and Vitamin B-3 and River City Slim and the Zydeco Hogs on Sunday.
Braiden Sunshine is a blues musician known for being the youngest performer to go on NBC’s show “The Voice.”
Saturday brings the Led Zeppelin tribute band Physical Graffiti, The Machine, which
Zarotney said he’s seen a trend form in the past few years of fairs booking tribute and cover
bands. “I think we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on them,” he said.
Instead, this year the fair will introduce “Berlin’s Got Talent.”

“We have so many talented kids and people I’ve met through the years who live in town,” said fair Assistant Entertainment Director Lenny Tubbs. Contestants, who have already auditioned, will advance through three rounds, one each night of the fair, with the top winners splitting $1,000.
The talent competition is not the only new attraction to the fair, which runs Sept. 14-16. There will also be a charity bean bag throwing contest and helicopter rides. Getting into the fair has also become easier with the launch of online ticket sales. “We have people from every part of Berlin and businesses in town. It’s truly a community event,” Tubbs said. “There’s something for everyone at the Berlin Fair.” dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

Fair helps grow community groups through food, fun By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
The Berlin Fair, renowned for food and fun, also helps civic organizations in the community raise funds and awareness. "The Berlin Fair's unique and it helps a lot of civic organizations," said fair President John Zarotney. The fair is an important fundraiser for many of the civic and municipal groups in town, including the fire department, Kiwanis Club, Berlin Lions and local faith groups.
"It's a good fundraiser for our church, but it's also a way to reach out to the community and be a visible presence," said Reverend Olivia Robinson of the Kensington Congregational Church. "They feel like they're getting fed, but they're also supporting their churches and their community." Cooking lobster rolls, pies and baked beans a week beforehand brings her parish closer together, especially as young and old members work side by side. See Fair community, A12

430 Beckley Road, East Berlin, CT
APPEARING LIVE:
Fair communities From A10
"It creates a sense of community and camaraderie and they're able to get to know each other better," Robinson said. "It's a lot of work, but I think people in the end enjoy it," she said. "My husband and I always go for a ride on the Ferris wheel." "It's when the community gets together and supports all the charities in town, be it the churches or the fire
department," said Jim Simons, the town's fleet manager, who sells food alongside some of the town's firefighters.
Fire Company will serve up kielbasa sandwiches and the South Kensington Volunteer Fire Department will have ice cream and fried clams.
The fair serves as the second largest fundraiser for the fire department. "It's a week of hard work," Simons said of getting all the ingredients together before the fair and setting up.
"When you're in the sausage (booth), you see people coming every year," said Zarotney, who spent years working the booth.
The municipal fire department will sell french fries, the East Berlin Volunteer
The fair is a reunion for members of organizations and neighbors who see each other at the serving counters, he said.

Sophomore Marc Scarano caught a Dunn offering for a 38-yard score and senior Alex Halkias had a 45-yard TD reception, Berlin’s fourth touchdown of the first half.
Said senior captain Dom Scarano: “This team dictates how far we go. We truly believe we are the only ones that can beat us.”
Having suffered a preseason injury, Halkias played limited minutes against Bulkeley. Nonetheless, he contributed two touchdowns and 231 yards, reaching triple-digit totals in both rushing and receiving yards. “It feels like our hard work both in the offseason and in training camp is starting to pay off,” Halkias said.
Senior kicker Giancarlo Tufano echoed that, saying: “We definitely are capable of winning a state championship, but championship teams don't have these mistakes we had today.” Berlin penalties piled up
early against Bulkeley and continued throughout the game. “It was tough … but we have practiced hard all season and knew what we had to do to overcome those setbacks,” said senior captain Nick Paszczuk. The Redcoats are back at it tonight when East Catholic comes to Sage Park.

TOWN OF BERLIN Public Hearing Notice Belcher Brook Re-lining Project Assessments The Berlin Water Control Commission of the Town of Berlin will hold a public hearing in Room 8 of the Town Hall, 240 Kensington Road, Berlin, CT on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, at 7:00 P.M. to consider the following: The Berlin Water Control Commission (BWCC) is proposing to take a $2,296,833.00* low interest loan for 20 years, through the Department of Environmental and Energy Protection (D.E.E.P.). At this meeting, interested persons may be heard and written communications may be received.
