Standing before two steel beams from the World Trade Center, the Kensington Fire Rescue Company gathered to remember the victims of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Four local libraries are seeking funding to hire a parttime social worker to help them provide mental health services to patrons who rely on the library as a shelter. “Libraries are changing along with other agencies in town and we are discovering that we are home to people that have mental health issues, people that are homeless,” Berlin-Peck Memorial Library Director Helen Malinka said during a recent Berlin Town Council meeting. “The library is a safe place, it's a shelter. However, it brings a whole other set of issues and staff are not trained to handle these kinds of problems.”
“I often think about the great sacrifices of those first responders and the civilians who helped get people out of the buildings and those who acted in the air,” Kensington Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Pajor said during the ceremony Sept. 11. “This memorial is a tribute to those who

“... today we have a beautiful memorial here to honor those that lost their lives 17 years ago and those that continue to suffer the affects of those attacks,” said retired Kensington Chief Mark Lewandowski, who spearheaded the effort to create the monument.
The beams rise out of a pentagon of concrete, representing the 189 killed at the Pentagon, and are surrounded by a lawn for the 44 killed aboard Flight 93, which crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The project was years in the making, and while the lights were first turned on in December 2017, the company waited for the anniversary of

Letters to the Editor Thoughful discussion needed To the editor: Recently a grant for $750,000 was offered to Berlin by House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz. The purpose of the grant is to study and formulate a plan for a future community/senior center. Berlin does need some type of facility that would contain a pool, gym and other multifunction rooms for use by all our residents. However, this grant does not come close to funding an estimated $20-25 million that we would need to build such a facility.
At a recent Town Council meeting I voted to delay the acceptance of the grant for a short period of time to get comments from the public before we move forward with this project. The town has a list of capital projects waiting to be funded, such as the renovation of our police station. It all comes down to funding. And as I wrote recently, we have an unhealthy debt of $105 million. Therefore, I would like to begin a community conversation about the above potential project, so I am planning two public forums during the next few
weeks to give citizens an opportunity to share their thoughts with the council and town officials.
Joe upset the unions by supporting this bipartisan budget that froze wages and cut state employee benefits.

Mavis said of her 3-year-old daughter, Lilah Mavis. “I think she’s going to try to steal one of the piglets if I don’t stop her.” With a demolition derby, about a dozen bands and fireworks, the fair is the largest attraction in town, bringing thousands to East Berlin. Many of the churches and civic groups in Berlin have booths filled with volunteers providing food to their neighbors. “I’ve lived in town for 43 years. This is a staple,” Jerry Sikorowicz said. “With the improvements they’ve done with it, it’s equal to the Durham Fair.” The fair is put on by the Berlin Lions Club, which uses much of the revenue to support charitable groups throughout town, many of which already use the week-
end to sell their own delicacies. “To support our charities, that’s why we do this; that’s why countless volunteers come out,” said John Zarotney, the fair president. “That’s what makes this fair unique, that there’s so many civic organizations that we’re able to help. “I think it brings the community together. If they’re not volunteering, they’re attending the fair,” he added. “It’s the biggest event in Berlin.” The food helps, too, with each group known for a specialty. East Berlin’s volunteer fire department has fried Oreos, Kensington Congregational Church has hot buttered lobster rolls and pies, the Berlin Kiwanis Club has butterfly potatoes, and the Lions supply the fried dough.

“You come here to enjoy the fair, support the church and have fun,” said Amy Audette, a member of St. Paul’s Church, which serves fried Twinkies as well as onion rings. While it takes over a week of preparation to get everything ordered and set up and another week afterward to pack it all up, she said, it’s also a fun weekend with her congregation and friends. “We’re here to make some money, but also have a good time,” Audette said.

Redcoats march past Eagles, improve to 2-0 By Ajlal N. Khan Special to The Citizen
downs and a sack. Seniors Alex Halkias and Andrew Brochu and junior Larry St. Pierre also scored. St. Pierre and Halkias recorded two touchdowns apiece.
Last Thursday, the Berlin Redcoats returned to Sage Park for the first time this season and awaiting them were the East Catholic Eagles.
“You gotta spread the love, you do,” Hrubiec said. “When you have six, seven guys who can score at any time, which we do, you gotta spread the love.”
Hot off of a 42-0 win against the Bulkeley Bulldogs in Week 1, the Redcoats carried their momentum throughout the game, winning 50-0 against the Eagles.
Dunn echoed that, saying, “It’s great when you can ride your workhorses like Alex or Larry, but when you get the younger guys in, and everyone gets to contribute, that’s the best type of team win.”
After a slightly bumpy start, the Redcoat offense got its rhythm and went on to score on seven straight possessions.

While the Redcoats’ offense thrilled the crowd at Sage, their defense was equally important in the win. East Catholic quarterback Harrison Eklund was sacked three times and had two of his three pass attempts deflected. East Catholic fell to 1-1 on the year. “They prove each and every week that it’s hard for another team, another coach to prepare for us,” Berlin coach Joe Aresimowicz said. “Now, with the best coaching staff in the state that I have, we’re gonna focus in on the little things.” The Redcoats will face Northwest Catholic (0-2) in their next game.

The Berlin Water Control Commission (BWCC) is proposing to take a $2,296,833.00* low interest loan for 20 years, through the Department of Environmental and Energy Protection (D.E.E.P.). This project will reduce infiltration into the Belcher Brook Interceptor, thereby reducing the sewer flow into the Mattabassett District Treatment Facility, which will result in the reduction of future operational costs. The re-lining project has a 50 year life time. The assessments are estimated as follows: Berlin Water Control Customers - $13.00 per quarter (estimated) Worthington Fire District (estimated 25% flow) approximately $28,711.04 annually Kensington Fire District (estimated 5% flow) approximately $5,742.21 annually *Note: If the project cost is less than proposed, all assessments will be decreased accordingly. At this meeting, interested persons may be heard and written communications may be received. Copies of the Financial Analysis of the DEEP Repayment Loan related to this hearing are available for inspection in the office of the Water Control Manager in Room 3 of the Town Hall. Staff is available to discuss concerns and address questions and comments. Bruce Laroche, Chairman Berlin Water Control Commission
