COMMENTARY
Businesses big and small are choosing Berlin By Chris Edge
It has been some time since I wrote to the great readers of The Berlin Citizen and I wanted to use this space to highlight a few businesses which have recently moved to Berlin or started a business in town. These firms vary greatly by size as well as the type of business they are in. The first, Lili’s Bakery & Cakes, located at 365 New Britain Road, was purchased by and is operated by brother and sister DJ Juganaru and Lili Orlenau. The location was formerly Leone’s
Bakery. Though different in name, the high level of customer service and great taste continues. Whether you are looking for a quick coffee and a munchie, lunch, or a wonderful cookie plate, DJ will welcome you at the door and Lili will make your taste buds sing! Just down the road, you will be pampered at our next new business, Natural Balance Massage. At 369 New Britain Road, owner Lynn Gavrilis can offer you numerous types of massages including natural balance, prenatal, sports, chair and even couples massage. Addi-
tionally, you can receive spa treatments and skin care from Vivacious Look, who shares space with Lynn. If you would like a one-time treat, become a massage member, buy a package for yourself, or even buy a gift card for a loved one. Stop by or visit Natural Balance Massage at www.ctnaturalbalance.com. Berlin has become a loca-
tion for businesses which do not specifically work with the public, but have found the central location and easy access to highways a great asset to coming to our town. Steelwrist, a Swedish firm that markets, develops and manufactures tiltrotators, quick couplers and tools for excavators has opened up their U.S. headquarters in Berlin at 576 Christian
Lane. As their product is installed on construction equipment, the location in Berlin is key to targeting not just firms in Central Connecticut, but throughout the northeastern United States. The biggest story in 2018 in Berlin is the relocation of and completion of the 55,000 square foot facility for See Edge, A10

A familyowned and -operated business, Forrest Machine has officially opened their 55,000 square foot facility on Christian Lane where they machine and assemble components for aerospace and commercial industries. They have over 70 employees in Berlin and are one of a number of firms in town that manufacture parts in the aerospace industry. The last business I would like to mention is Dragonfly Designs & Gifts. The location at 1064 Farmington Ave. is to behold something a little different. Having been in the gift and retail business for a number of years, Tracy Shipman, the owner, put together a location that is different, yet very special. It is a gift shop which includes ideas for interior décor as well as items from local artisans. For a gift for any occasion including holidays, anniversaries or just because you wanted to let someone know you are thinking of them, Dragonfly is worth a drop-in. -- Chris Edge is the economic development director for the Town of Berlin.

of Technology and Partner Integration Kevin Kraus, such as unlocking, locking or checking the status from a phone or computer, receiving notifications if a door is left unlocked and setting routines for automatically locking at a set time.
“I think it’s a combination of convenience and peace of mind,” said Patti Loyack, Comcast’s vice president of IP services and home automation. The company’s western New England headquarters is on New Park Drive in Berlin. “You’ve got such a great reputation with the Yale brand.”
There’s two reasons he sees customers adopting the technology, “one obviously is there’s a lot of convenience not having to use a mechanical key. Two is the data you get from the key,” Kraus said, adding that many customers like being able to see what times the locks were open and closed throughout the day.
Aside from controlling locks, Xfinity Home allows users to control electric and heating use, turn lights on and off and program and remotely set thermostats and air conditioning. Loyack said adding the locks allows for a more comprehensive experience, one they’re focusing on refining and making as intuitive as possible. “We want everyone to enjoy the smart home and not just our tech savvy customers,” she said.
For those wary of adding technology to a facet of homes which have remained relatively unchanged for centuries, Kraus compared the locks to remote keys which have become fairly standard on modern cars. “We all now trust that tech as much as we trust a
Yale as a part of our partner program and looking forward to the experiences we’re going to bring to our customers.” Berlin’s Economic Development Director Chris Edge said the town is an ideal home for companies like Yale and Comcast due to a tax rate lower than its neighbors and a location which is convenient for customers and employees alike. “I'm very pleased that two of our leading companies have found a way to partner to help folks not just in Connecticut but around the United States,” Edge said. Partnerships between local businesses in fields that can work alongside each other also serve to create a smooth-flowing business atmosphere in town. “I think when they're complimentary like this it’s great in that it gels relationships,” Edge said.
“Our goal is really to make Xfinity the operating system of the digital home,” she said. “We’re excited to have

The walk is a special for Henry. "I like it because I didn't know I (wasn't) the only one allergic to peanuts and I saw all these people allergic to peanuts," he said. By selling Popsicles at the walk, donating prize money from the fair and taking donations from family and friends, the Nowiks have raised over $1,000 for the Food Allergy Research Education group, which runs the Westport walk. The effort has also been paying off by making Henry’s own Halloween a bit better. "We've noticed that there's been a lot of teal pumpkins in our neighborhood since we've started doing this since kindergarten,” his mother said. "It's kind of fun to see them pop up.” dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian
