Family raises awareness about food allergies By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

One teal pumpkin at a time, a local elementary school student is urging families to keep a second bowl of treats on hand for children like him with food allergies. "Instead of putting candy out, maybe make two bowls, one with candy for the kids (without allergies) and (one) peanut free, (or) just toys,” said Henry Nowik, 8, a third grader at Griswold Elementary School who has severe nut allergies. Every year he creates a scarecrow with a teal pumpkin for a head to display at the Berlin Fair. The Teal Pumpkin Project is a nationwide organization which seeks to make Halloween and trick-or-treating a more inclusive experience for those with food allergies or restrictions.
