Celebrating 107 at the family business By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Despite retiring four years ago, Michael Budney celebrated his 107th birthday on Wednesday, Oct. 3 by showing up at work just as he does every day.

“It’s what he’s done his whole life,” said his daughter, Lori Budney, who now runs the company.
The state’s largest teachers union on Friday joined those criticizing the Berlin man running against House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz for social media posts, including one attacking a school shooting survivor and another expressing anti-Muslim sentiments.
Her father returns to Budney Industries in Berlin each day to walk the floor and watch the process. “It brings him back to when he was working in a machine shop years ago,” she said. Seeing the centenarian come in every day is an inspiration for his workers “He always told me it keeps him young,” said General Manager Mark Zarek. “It brings the spirit of the shop up.” After singing Sto Lat, a Polish song wishing 100 years of good health, Lori Budney said they’d have to find a new song for him or change the words to wish him another 100 years. “Everybody knows that he’s proud of his Polish heritage and (that) he likes to work,” she said. “I’m just happy my dad is healthy and (can) come here every day just for an hour or two.”

Nichole Vega says she is more than a hair stylist.
“This is what sang to us,” Vega said, adding that the central location will allow her to stay close to her longtime clients and attract new ones.
“I just want to be behind the chair doing my art,” she said. Ten years after she opened Envy Salon in downtown Newington, Vega recently celebrated a second start in Berlin with a new, more spacious storefront at 224 Berlin Turnpike. The salon joins Fresh Monkee as the first businesses to move into the retail plaza
She loves the tall windows in her new salon, saying they flood the room with light. Being close to Assa Abloy and Eversource – two of the largest employers in the area – provides plenty of visibility, Vega said. “I think they bring a new vi-
brancy to the building. I think it’s great to see that we have one of the most respected salons in central Connecticut come to Berlin,” said town Economic Development Director Chris Edge. Many of her customers have been coming to Vega for almost a decade. “You feel like a whole new person,” said New Britain resident Agatha Warjas. “Nichole is awesome, she does make you feel envied.” dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

The town is already fining Szajkowski $100 for every day the property remains in violation of the town’s blight ordinance, an amount which exceeded $15,000 as of Oct. 3. “We felt at this point since there was no response …
this was our next available avenue,” Healy said. Aside from one call to Town Hall, Kaczynski and Healy said Szajkowski has been unresponsive to fines, the lawsuit and attempts to reach him. According to the town’s property listing report, the land and buildings are appraised at around $250,000.

Silver Lake boat race benefits nonprofit As the lake turns golden with falling leaves, the local canoe and kayak racing season will come to a close with the third annual Silver Lake Race. “It’s just nice to be out on the water and be with other people as well,” said Vicki Cummings, who organizes the race through the New England Canoe and Kayak Racing Association. This year’s race will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. and isn’t just limited to kayaks and canoes. “Anything that is human powered is more than welcome to come,” she said.
She felt it was a worthy cause since it helps people “feel valued, independent and proud.” The race is split into two parts,

Letters to the Editor Children’s champions To the editor: I am enthusiastically supporting Gary Brochu and Adam Salina for the Berlin Board of Education. We are fortunate to have candidates of their caliber and dedication. I previously served with Gary on the board. He cares deeply about the quality of education for all students and has advocated fairly and passionately for students, families, teachers and administrators.
and go. Our current state representative, Joe Aresimowicz, has been wellgrounded in the community all of his life. Joe is not partisan or arrogant or taken with the trappings of the office. He is a solidly middle-class person who works hard to represent his constituents in Hartford. I have met with Joe over the years on a number of issues. He listens and acts, and I support him fully. Adam has deep roots in the community; as a lifelong resident, parent of three children in the schools, former mayor and current BOE member. He listens and will consider every policy decision with the students’ interest in mind.

Tax burden growing To the editor: With House Leader Joe Aresimowicz pushing tax and spend increases for years, Connecticut ranks 49th in state fiscal health. The taxpayer burden of $53,400 per person is an increase of $3,900 from a 2017 report. A person making $50,000 would need a salary increase of almost 9 percent just to break even to pay this increase. If you want a representative to stand up for you and not the state unions and lobbyists, then vote for Steve Baleshiski.

Obituary FALMOUTH, ME- Phyllis Bleich Greenhalgh, 80, of Portland, ME and Berlin, CT, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2018, with family at her side. She will be dearly missed, along with her kind and gentle spirit, her creativity, and her lifelong dedication to family and friends. Phyllis was born in Cleveland Heights, OH, on July 1, 1938. A graduate of the Beaumont School in Cleveland, OH, she went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Ohio State University. After living in Columbus and Cleveland, OH, and Ann Arbor and Lansing, MI, she moved to Farmington, CT where she lived before moving to Berlin, CT in the 1990s and to the Portland, ME area in early 2018. In addition to her roles as homemaker and parent, she worked in various fields over the years, including library services, banking, office reception, and arts instruction. Her unselfish commitment to the needs of friends, family members, and even strangers, was one of the hallmarks of her life, and she provided extraordinary companionship and care to her mother, father, husband, and sister through the end of their lives. She also expressed her love, kindness, and creativity through her artwork. From oil and silkscreen work in her younger days, and crafts, painting and basket weaving in the middle of her life, to her watercolors
and gardening in more recent years, Phyllis truly shined as an artist, and her spirit will live on in our memories and in the tangible works of art she has left behind. Phyllis Bleich Greenhalgh was the beloved daughter of the late Mary Butler and Ferdinand Bleich; the beloved sister of Nancy Murphy, of Novi, MI, and the late Mary Jo Tormey, of Plainville, CT; and the beloved wife of the late Harvey Greenhalgh, of Berlin, CT. She is survived by her sons Matthew Jaynes, of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Marcus Jaynes, with her daughter-in-law Rebecca Jaynes and her grandsons, Christopher and Cayden Jaynes, of Falmouth, ME. She also leaves behind her nephew Brian Murphy, of Basking Ridge, NJ, and her late nephews Patrick and Michael Murphy), along with grand-nephews/nieces Christopher, Thomas, and Caroline Murphy (children of Brian and Graceann Murphy), Sean and Ben Murphy (sons of Patrick
Library Briefs Murphy), and Melaney Murphy (daughter of Michael Murphy); as well as her step-sons Peter Greenhalgh (with his wife Stacey Stuart), of Nantucket, MA, and Bruce Greenhalgh (with his wife Erin Greenhalgh and their children Kathleen, Megan, and Jack), of Sandwich, MA. During the last year of her life, following the death of her sister Mary Jo Tormey in CT, she relocated to Maine, where she lived near her son, Marcus Jaynes, and his family, and had her own apartment at The Woods at Canco, in Portland, Maine, an independent senior-living community where she had a number of wonderfully compassionate caregivers and friends. The times Phyllis spent with Marcus and Rebecca, and her grandsons Christopher and Cayden during her final months - including her son Matthew’s visit to Maine for her 80th birthday in July - are truly cherished and remind us of the precious gifts of family. A funeral mass was held on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Holy Martyrs Church, in Falmouth ME. Online condolences may be expressed at https://www.athutchins. com/. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Maine (https://www. hospiceofsouthernmaine. com) or the Father Nadolny Good News Fund (http:// fathernadolnygoodnews. com/). Burial will be held privately at a later date.

Berlin girls soccer closes in on tournament By Ajlal N. Khan The Citizen
The BHS girls soccer team moved to within one game of making the postseason tournament with a 2-1 win over Bristol Central Friday.
Berlin registering more shots on goal. However, it was the Rams who broke the early deadlock.
got the Redcoats on the board, tapping in the ball after bringing down a lobbed pass.
ing when the Redcoats fouled the Rams just outside the penalty box, setting the Rams up for a free kick.
Adalia Malick found space just outside the penalty box and dribbled it in for a goal.
Berlin continued its aggressive play in the second half, now focusing on knocking the Rams off the ball and running on the counter attack.
The kick was just high, hitting the crossbar and falling in front of the goal where Berlin keeper Lindsey Walsh gathered it.
The Lady Redcoats were 4-31 heading into the game while the Bristol Central Rams sat at 2-6-1. It looked to be an easy one for Berlin, but the Rams were ready to fight.
After this, Berlin increased its defensive tenacity, marking the Rams and pressing high up the pitch. This allowed Berlin to get a goal back before the end of the half.
Both teams were aggressive on offense to start, with
“The counter was not the game plan heading in but sometimes you just gotta adjust on the fly,” Berlin coach Alex Joslyn said.
It was Ashley Wenzel who
It looked to be all for noth-
Said Joslyn: “They had their opportunities, I mean you gotta give props to them … their goalkeeper made some great saves and they hit the cross bar on that set piece. Luckily, Lindsey Walsh was
there to make the save.” The game seemed to settle down for a bit before Berlin’s Jenna Zup, a sophomore, fired a shot into the top left corner from 25 yards. The goal turned out to be the game-winner as Berlin held Bristol Central scoreless the rest of the way. “The girls are hungry still … we’re in a good spot right now, first in the conference with three left to go… We control our own destiny,” said Joslyn.
At the season’s midway point, BHS football is undefeated
Against the Blue Devils, the Redcoats were determined to bounce back to their dominant form after narrowly edging out Northwest Catholic the week prior.

reached for comment Friday, but Brian Callahan, his campaign manager, said the posts were from his past and don’t reflect the candidate’s current views. “Things were said in the heat of the moment,” he said. “They don’t reflect his beliefs at all, not even close.” The posts were made as recently as March, when he criticized David Hogg, a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Hogg has become a prominent advocate for gun control. “I’m not supposed to speak ill of David Hogg because he’s a ‘survivor,’” Baleshiski wrote in the post. “Apparently if you’ve survived hor-
rific events, that makes the stupidity spewing out of your mouth above reproach. I disagree. Hogg can burn in hell, I don’t care what he survived. Survivors who wage war on my country are my enemies.” Another post, dated Nov. 1, 2017, targets Muslims. “I don’t know what it’s going to take for people to realize Islam isn’t compatible with western civilization,” he wrote. “How many of our people have to die before we free ourselves from the idea that Islam is just like any other religion?” Earlier in the campaign, Callahan spoke with Baleshiski about the posts and said he asked, for instance, if he has any prejudice against followers of Islam. According to
Callahan, Baleshiski said he made the posts in the heat of debate and they don’t reflect his views. Gary Brochu, the chair of Berlin’s Democratic Town Committee, questioned how Baleshiski’s views could change in such a short period of time. The Connecticut Education Association joined the criticism Friday, noting in particular that 17 victims died in the Florida school shooting. “No candidates running for office, Republican or Democrat, should make vile comments and attacks regarding students who speak out on matters of public concern,” Connecticut Education Association President Jeff Leake said in a news release.
