Life Scout Mathew A. Krajewski, of Boy Scout Troop 44, hoped to help veterans at the American Legion Post 68 for his Eagle Scout project. His research showed that the outdoors could help relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression and the effects of PTSD.
Running on a platform of opposing taxes and tolls, Republican Michael Gagliardi was at work campaigning last week days after his eleventh hour entry into the race against House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz.
With the help of other scouts, friends and family, Krajewski built an outside recreation area that consists of two bocce courts, two

Redcoats hold off RHAM, improve to 6-0 By Ajlal N. Khan Special to The Citizen
The Berlin Redcoats continued their undefeated season Friday, improving to 6-0 after beating the RHAM Sachems 41-35 at Sage Park.
This matchup was highly anticipated, as both teams entered the night with a spotless record. The game lived up to the hype. The Sachems proved to be the first true test the Redcoats have faced this
fall. “The other adversity we had was Northwest [Catholic], but that was self-inflicted,” BHS coach Joe Aresi-
“I don’t think any candidate should run unopposed. Even if it’s an uphill Gagliardi battle I think people should have a choice,” said the 40-year Berlin resident. “We need some fresh perspectives, we need some people to come in with different ideas.” The 30th House District includes parts of Southington and Berlin. Gagliardi criticized Aresimowicz, D-Berlin, for supporting two large tax increases, including one that came when Aresimowicz was majority leader in 2015, and his sup-

port of highway tolls.
Gagliardi was chosen as the party’s nominee Tuesday, Oct. 23, the last day candidates could file with the secretary of the state’s office. The position opened when previous GOP candidate Steven Baleshiski of Southington dropped out of the race after losing party support due to social media posts expressing anger and hatred toward Muslims, Parkland, Florida school shooting survivor David
“I know how state policies affect certain businesses. I’ve been through several corporate downsizings,” he said. Aresimowicz said he continued campaigning after Baleshiski’s departure from the race, and would have continued if Republicans had not found a replacement. “Nothing changes for me,” he said.
Gagliardi is seeking to obtain a public financing grant through the state Election Program, although changes recently approved by the legislature for budgetary reasons limit how much candidates can receive after certain deadlines. State Elections Enforcement Commission spokesperson Joshua Foley said the commission received Gagliardi’s application Wednesday, Oct. 17 and was to meet last Friday to consider how much he should receive. “This is a new scenario having a replacement candidate this late,” Foley said. dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

mowicz said. “This was a team that was gonna match up with us, and they did.” Much like in its first five games of the season, Berlin came out of the gate aggressive. Larry St. Pierre and Alex Halkias scored quick touchdowns in the first quarter. St. Pierre weaved through the defense to find the end zone on a 25-yard run and quarterback Kevin Dunn connected with Halkias for a 35yard score. Despite feeling under the weather, Dunn shined for the victors, throwing for 267 yards and four TDs. Three of those touchdown strikes were to Giancarlo Tufano, who had six receptions for 76 yards.

“I mean, 5-0. Come on now. We gotta get them, make it 5-1 for them,” Tufano said. “We’ve gotta make little adjustments but I think we did really well today.” The Sachems started slow, but before the end of the first half, they found their footing. The RHAM offense started to run the ball more often and found success. But the real progress came when the Sachems looked upfield for the long pass, which proved to be lethal. “They kinda figured it out,” Aresimowicz said of the visitors. “They have some great athletes over there … and they started to execute. But our kids persevered. Winning is hard and these kids hung in there.” With their offense clicking, the Sachems were able to close the gap to just six points in the fourth quarter. But that’s where their comeback stalled. Sophomore Marco Scarano’s third-quarter kickoff return provided the Redcoats

Dear Voters, I am a supporter of SB 453, An Act Concerning Classroom Safety and Disruptive Behavior. My opponent, Cathy Abercrombie voted against it in the last legislative session despite overwhelming bipartisan support, and Governor Malloy vetoed the bill. The bill as drafted would have protected students from bullying, cyberbullying, teen dating violence, and other violations of classroom safety. Every student is entitled to and deserves the best public education we can provide. I will be sure to focus my legislative efforts on the rights of ALL students to receive an education, in a safe environment that is conducive to learning. A disruptive student affects an entire classroom and every child in that classroom suffers as a result. Teachers often report their safety and that of their students are put at risk repeatedly, that student misbehavior interferes with their teaching, and that many of the disruptive students are repeat performers. Any parent with a child in a classroom that is repeatedly disrupted, or has a teacher or fellow student injured, would insist that a mechanism was in place to remove the threat from potential future occurrences. SB 453 was exactly that mechanism, and my opponent voted against it. This is one of the things we all pay taxes for: the safety of our children and their teachers!

Budget, tolls and taxes are debated By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — Republican, Democratic and Libertarian candidates in three local races were sharply divided on the implementation of tolls, how to close a $4.5 billion deficit, and other issues during a candidate forum last week. Candidates running for the 13th Senate District and the 82nd and 83rd House District squared off in a debate Thursday. Oct. 18 at Washington Middle School sponsored by the Record-Journal, Midstate Chamber of Commerce, and Meriden Board of Education.
13th Senate District Sen. Len Suzio, R-Meriden, said the state won’t be attractive to businesses if it continues raising taxes. “Businesses won’t come to
the state because of the tax state. If everyone is prosperburdens,” Suzio said. “You’ve ing our deficit will take care got to tighten the belt, look of itself,” she said. where you can cut costs.” She also said the state needs to make its tax structure He pointed to negotiations “more equitable,” including with state employee unions asking wealthier residents to that produced budget savpay slightly more, and that ings as an example. She
voiced opposition to a $10 million study the State Bonding Commission recently authorized on tolls. She argued that the state needs to make infrastructure upgrades a priority, referencing the Mianus River Bridge collapse in Greenwich in 1983. Suzio expressed his opposition to tolls, instead touting a Republican proposal that would rely on bonding to pay for infrastructure projects. He also said the Malloy Administration was exaggerating concerns about the future of the Special Transportation Fund because gas consumption has increased in recent years, producing more revenue from fuel taxes. The two candidates also differed on how the state should respond if the U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade. Abrams
said she would oppose any proposal to reduce or eliminate women’s right to choose. Suzio said he regards “every abortion as a tragedy,” and the state should require parental notification when anyone under the age of 16 seeks an abortion. He said public support as it currently stands would make it unlikely to pass any stricter laws to limit access to abortions.
82nd House District Rep. Catherine Abercrombie, D-Meriden, said she wouldn’t take a stance on whether she would support a tax increase because she first wanted to see what the next governor’s budget proposal is going to be. As a cochair of the General Assembly’s Human Services ComSee Forum, A8

of Connecticut's roads. He also said revenue from tolls could allow the state to reduce taxes on fuel and motor vehicle purchases, fees for registrations, and other costs.
Libertarian Roger Misbach said “there is plenty of waste in the budget that can be cut,” and also voiced his opposition to tax increases.
Abercrombie said she supports tolls in part because she’s concerned cuts to human services would be needed to fund transportation projects if tolls aren’t implemented. Arata, meanwhile, said he views tolls as another tax and he doesn’t support the idea.
Misbach
He also said he was initially against the implementation of tolls, but changed his mind after travel to other states caused him to view tolls as a way to charge outof-state drivers for their use
Abercrombie also said she supports raising the minimum wage, saying many residents are forced to work
two or three jobs to make ends meet. Arata said jobs, and not wages, should be the barometer for the economy, and he expressed concern that a minimum wage increase would hurt the ability of small businesses to grow jobs. Misbach said wages should be subject to the free market and not the government.
82nd House District Rep. Emil “Buddy” Altobello, D-Meriden, touted his experience, including 24 years in the legislature, and said one of his best traits is his ability to secure additional funding See Forum, A9

for projects in his district. Republican Ernestine Holloway also pointed to Altobello’s experience, but said voters should view it as a negative. ”We need a fresh new set of eyes,” Holloway said. “He’s been doing this too long.” Holloway said she opposed any tax increases and that lawmakers need to “tighten our belts.” She pointed to her ability to collect items and donate them to schoolchildren on a tight budget, and suggested the state should operate on similar ideals. When asked about taxes, Altobello said “we’ll see what happens” with the next governor’s budget. While he didn’t take a firm stance, he did say cuts are difficult because everyone points to programs they don’t utilize without thinking about the harm to residents who do. “There is no magic bullet here, someone has to pay,” he said. Altobello also expressed concern that if the state cuts municipal aid, it will force local officials to

raise property taxes on residents to make up the difference. Holloway said the state could cut spending by finding efficiencies in higher education and utilizing more renewable energy sources, like solar, to reduce energy costs She also said the state needs to better prioritize its transportation spending, voicing more support in particular for bus service over the new CTrail line. On school security, Holloway proposed multiple police officers in each school as a way to help keep kids safe. Altobello said the state has already done a lot since the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, and that the emphasis now needs to be on addressing students’ mental health needs. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255

To the editor:

Democrats continue to spend billions on unaffordable benefits for union members, a lightly used busway and a bailout of Hartford's debt. Now they want to add tolls to our roads. If elected, I will work to reduce state spending, lowering the tax burden for all. Middle class families know how to live within their means. The state must do the same.
If students failed every year from the same teacher, the teacher would be fired. But Joe Aresimowicz and Cathy Abercrombie with Gov. Malloy have done the same song and dance every year – more taxes and more spending – and they keep getting re-elected. Our growing deficit is now $4.5 billion ($54,300 for every taxpayer.) Isn't it time for a change?

Vote for change
To the editor:
To the editor:
I'm saddened to see that Gary Brochu is asking the citizens of Berlin to put him back on the Board of Education. Is the reason he stepped away so soon forgotten? Do we really believe he will not again use his position to bully other school employees with whom he has disagreements? I therefore hope that many others will join me in letting him know that we have not forgotten.
If you want more tax increases, uncontrollable spending, no tax relief for our senior citizens, staying with a costly 10-year union deal, billion dollar deficits, and more businesses and people moving out of state, vote for Democratic incumbents Joe Aresimowicz and Cathy Abercrombie. If you want lower taxes, budget spending cuts and controls, tax relief for our senior citizens, fair and less costly union deals, a more business/people friendly state, vote for Republicans Mike Gagliardi and Lou Arata. Change will only happen if you come out to vote on Nov. 6.

Vote Republican To the editor: Joe Aresimowicz – Parent. Coach. Veteran. Nice words, if you are running for Person of the Year. Face it, folks, Joe has been in Hartford politics a long time. Foster, adoptive information sessions
Navy band hits all the right notes By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Klingberg Family Centers has scheduled a foster & adoptive parents information session for Thursday, Nov. 8, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at 370 Linwood St., New Britain.
From traditional service tunes, to a booming tribute to Aretha Franklin, to the ominous Imperial March from Star Wars, the Navy Band Northeast's Pops Ensemble served up something for most every musical taste Oct. 4 at McGee Middle School. Peter Galgano, who organized the concert with the Berlin Veterans Commission, said the performance “brings back a lot of memories and a lot of joy bringing the community together to realize why they have the freedoms we have today. Something like this brings all the families and veterans together.” The Navy Band Northeast show brought out residents of all ages, from a troop of Boy Scouts to elderly veterans who stood at attention and saluted as the song of each military branch was played at the end of the evening.

“It’s good to know our armed forces are something we can be proud of,” said Lieutenant Joel BorrelliBoudreau, the band’s conductor.
Todd Helming, a music teacher in Plainville, brought his children to the concert. He said the show appealed to his daughter, who was able to hum along to songs she was learning in school, including “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

Navy Band Northeast aims to appeal to as many people as possible with music from across genres and eras. “We like to focus on composers of American patriotic music,” Borrelli-Boudreau said. “We’re here to showcase the best of America.”
