Interfaith support for Muslims grieving Chapel Hill shooting By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
A Muslim woman and a Catholic woman wept together and embraced Feb. 13 at the Berlin Mosque, the home of the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford. Among those who came together to mourn that day were members of Catholic, Jewish, Sikh, Protestant, and humanist communities. The gathering honored the memory of 23-year-old Deah Barakat, his wife of one month, Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and her sister, Razan Abu-Salha, 19, victims of the Chapel Hill shooting in
North Carolina. “From their activism and community service, it is clear that the Muslim community in North America has lost three bright stars,” said Dr. Reza Mansoor, president of the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford. “I feel your pain, my brother,” said Ripi Singh, a member of the Connecticut Council for Inter-religious Understanding (CCIU) and part of the Sikh community in Southington. “All of us in the Old Lyme community are standing with Dr. Reza Mansoor (center) speaks to members of other faith communities who came to the Berlin Mosque Feb. 13 to offer support and condolences to the Muslim community See Shooting / Page 4 after the murder of three young Muslims in North Carolina. | Charles Kreutzkamp / The Berlin Citizen

Liberty Tattoo, owned by Pat Murdough, has been in operation since October of 2008. Originally located on Farmington Avenue in Berlin near the train station, the business recently moved to Deming Road. This reporter asked Murdough some questions about his experiences as a tattoo artist: the good, the bad and the ugly. What was the first tattoo you ever created? The first tattoo I ever applied was on myself, and it was a star on my forearm. I did this with poor planning, crude implements, and no training. The tattoo proceeded to get quite infected, which warranted a trip to the emergency room and a week or so of antibiotics. The first tattoo I did under the supervision of knowledgeable tattoo artists was a Japanese kanji; for strength. It was done on the shoulder blade of a young girl who was a regular client of the shop I was at and was willing to let me practice on her. The first tattoo we ever did here at Liberty, believe it or not, was a leprechaun urinating into a pot of gold. What are the ages of the youngest and oldest persons you ever tattooed? The youngest person I’ve ever tattooed was 15, [even] though the youngest I will tattoo now is 16, with parent consent. Her family and friends had been to us for various tattoos and piercings. Her mother signed for her and was present for the entire process. She got a series of vines and flowers on her hip.
The oldest client I’ve ever tattooed was my great aunt, who was in her 70s. At the time I tattooed her, she got a clown holding a balloon on her leg. What was the strangest tattoo you ever did on someone? I’ve done various tattoos on peoples genitals ... I’ve done lettering inside peoples lips. I’ve done entire songs and poems on people. I’ve tattooed a cat smoking marijuana as a memorial for a young man’s mother. I once did a portrait of a stillborn baby on its mother, which was a terrible idea from the get-go. That was long before I had the common sense to turn down what I would consider to be “bad tattoo ideas.” Back then I was willing to do whatever people asked of me. I tattooed a lemon wedge on our shop manager’s back the size of a large watermelon. I tattooed a portrait of the clown from the movie “Uncle Buck,” complete with his mouse car. I’ve tattooed profani-

the person that committed this horrible crime identified as a secularist, that it is particularly important that leaders in the humanist and atheist community come forward and denounce it and express our unity with the Muslim community,” Blinn told The Citizen. M a ny i n a t t e n d a n c e thanked Blinn for his support. “I felt very welcomed and embraced by this caring community,” he said. Before the statements began, Mansoor expressed hope that “as a nation that values mutual respect and diversity, we pray to almighty God that through this tragedy we are brought closer together.” This wish was fulfilled on this day, at the Berlin Mosque, at least. As speakers finished expressing condolences and support for the Muslim community, they received thanks, handshakes, and hugs.

CNN reported that authorities are investigating whether the murders were motivated by religion and qualify as a hate crime. Hicks allegedly described himself as an “anti-theist” on Facebook, making posts critical of Islam and Christianity, according to CNN. Hicks also was alleged to have had angry confrontations with his neighbors, including the young Muslims, over loud music and parking disputes. “I really felt that because

you today,” said Rev. Steve Jungkeit, senior minister of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. “We join with you in the pain and the suffering and the anguish of the loss of these three human beings,” said Rabbi Herbert Brockman of Mishkan Israel in Hamden. Brockman pointed to a teaching common to the Quran and the Torah that states God began creation with a single man and a single woman so that none may say their parent is greater than another. “The deaths of these three young people are the deaths of my children, as they are the deaths of your children,” Brockman said. Carole Fay, a member of CCIU and the Catholic St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church
in Hartford, shared that upon hearing of the shootings “The first thing I thought was that I can’t hurt as much as any of these families do, and frankly, I can’t hurt as any of you do. And yet, I feel… these are my folks that have been lost.” Addressing the Muslim community, Fay said, “you are known to us as a community and you are valued… you are loved by us.” “We absolutely stand together with the communities of faith… I want to extend to you my greatest sympathies,” said Daniel Blinn of the Hartford Area Humanists, a group that includes humanists, atheists, and agnostics. Blinn served as founding president of the organization and currently serves as vice president. Members of the Hartford Area Humanists share a belief that “every person has an

According to its website, FIRST is a nonprofit founded in 1989 to “inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.” New for the Fullmetal Falcons this year is a 3D printer that can create plastic parts for the robot, which team members described as “surprisingly strong.” The team was awarded the device, which arrived just a week ago, after a member entered an essay contest. The team planned to start practicing operating the robot this week. Their first competition will be held in Waterbury, Feb. 28, with another competition in Hartford March 28.

This is only the third year of competition for the Fullmetal Falcons, who received funding from NASA during their first two years. NASA often helps fund teams as they get started, but after the first two years, teams are expected to fund themselves. Teams are also eligible for awards based on publicity and community outreach. According to the founder of FIRST Robotics, Dean Kamen, the competitions hope “To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.”

Driver 1, Driver 2, and Human Player. During every 2.5-minute match, the Fullmetal Falcons will use their robot to join with two other teams to form an alliance on the red or blue team competing against an opposing alliance of three robots. Each team will have a human player that can throw pool noodles in attempts to derail the opposing team’s robots. The player can also hand off noodles to their alliance’s robots, with noodles placed in trash bins worth six points and litter moved into the landfill zone worth one point per noodle. The Fullmetal Falcon’s programming team has been hard at work preparing the robot to attempt to score points during the first 15 seconds of the match, when robots work autonomously. After that period ends, team drivers can take direct control of their robots. The Fullmetal Falcons have programmed their robot to work using a game controller connected to a laptop that
interfaces wirelessly with the robot. Each year the Fullmetal Falcons create a different robot, but they are permitted to cannibalize robots from previous years for parts, to save money – thematically befitting the Recycle Rush game, team spokesman Van Augur, a North Branford resident, pointed out. Unlike in previous years, “we don’t foresee much robot to robot interaction,” said co-captain Jameson Kief of Southington. In previous years, robots would sometimes cause damage to each other, Kief said. Now, robots are not required to have bumpers as robots from previous years were. This Fullmetal Falcons’ current robot has a unique ability the team calls “the H drive.” In addition to four wheels positioned like a car’s, the robot has two interior wheels that allow the robot to strafe left and right. The team hopes this will allow the robot to center itself in front of bins, making it easier to lift and stack using the pneumatic gripping arms. The team has been waiting

parking and a safe environment at a farm stand, for example, is important, Roby said. Regulations should also encourage proper practices, which “need to be followed in order to keep things safe,” he said. Another resident agreed, saying that he takes care not to expose others to fertilizers and pesticides.
“Nothing fills my heart the way this meeting does,” said local farmer James Roby. Roby, founder of the Berlin Farmer’s Market and former president of the Northeast Organic Farmer’s Association, said that having “a strong food source in the community” strengthens it. Roby also said that regulations should “work for everyone,” and that some are necessary. Having proper

should be “farmer-friendly” and “make it easier for farmers to earn money.” He said the Berlin Land Trust believes “the country is changing with regard to agriculture. Big agriculture farms are moving to genetically modified corn and wheat, but there is a movement in this country in favor of (growing) organic.” Kearn said the return of small organic farms to New England could result in an economic transformation in the state. He advocated for acreage restrictions to be relaxed. “It should be driven by economics, not acreage. If someone can produce good organics in a subdivision, we think that is good for the country. I’m not saying to allow a farm stand in a threeacre lot, but I don’t see a problem with someone with a house setting up a table and selling tomatoes.”

idents as well as look at the regulations of other area towns as they prepare suggestions for the elected members of the commission. Riggins said she wanted residents to be aware that the commission will hold a public hearing, during which interested members of the community and experts can address the commission directly. “I have 45 years of farming in me, so I think I can bring that insight to it,” she said. Heavily discussed was the idea of preparing different regulations for different levels of agricultural activities. Although current regulations do not require a permit for private non-commercial gardens, some residents proposed changes for residents who engage in “hobby farming,” such as allowing the keeping of backyard chickens or rabbits. Under current regulations, three acres are required to keep animals, but some residents wanted to raise a small number of chickens or rabbits in smaller spaces. Residents also discussed having different regulations for resident farmers intent on making a living from agriculture, and larger commercial farms that may not be owner-occupied. Another resident suggested the number of allowed animals be based on weight, so as to allow farmers to keep a greater number of smaller breeds of cow. One resident suggested new regulations making it easier to run a farm stand, and not requiring permits to be renewed every year. Suggestions included defining a farm stand as a temporary structure for seasonal use, whereas a farm store would be a permanent structure. Allowing residents to sell a percentage of items other than their own produce at farm stands and stores was also suggested as a way to make farming more economically viable in town. Residents also wanted to be allowed to have larger fences closer to property lines. “Production is the name of the game,” one resident said. “You want to be able to use your property to its fullest
extent.” Deer fencing needs to be eight feet high, one resident said, and bird netting may also be needed to protect crops. One resident wanted the ability to open an event venue with an on-site kitchen or bakery that could be used to host pancake breakfasts, weddings and other catered events. Residents also called for the creation of an agricultural commission to “give us a voice in the town hall,” or to revive the Berlin Grange. President of the Berlin Land Trust, Dennis Kearn, said the land trust supports farming, “an important function to keep towns greener.” Kearn commended town officials for holding the meetings. “We like the idea of an agricultural council to present the views of farmers” to town officials, he said. “If farmers don’t speak together, no one will hear them.” Kearn spoke in favor of “the right to farm,” noting that the odors associated with farming can sometimes be a cause for neighbors’ complaints. Kearn said regulations

Roby spoke in favor of reviving the Berlin Grange. “I would love to be part of that process,” he said. Glenn Chalder noted that zoning is a relatively new practice, historically speaking, that started as a way to prevent nuisances. “No one wants government to tell you what you can do on your property, but everyone wants government to tell your neighbor what they can’t do,” Chalder said. “The message is coming through loud and clear. We are trying to do enough regulation, but not too much.” Roby suggested the town consider a community farm,
like the ones in Simsbury or Enfield, which he said are very successful. A community farm allows residents to use town-owned property to raise crops and animals, which can also help introduce new farmers to animal husbandry. “It could be a good opportunity for us to explore.” Riggins emphasized that the Planning and Zoning commission is an elected body, and said that a public hearing will be held before the commission makes final decisions. She noted that there are many vacancies on town boards and commissions, if residents are interested in getting more involved.

Opinion Commentary: Lake at dawn By Marie Jordan-Whitney
Letters to the Editor
Manzi mission continues To the editor: In December, 2014 the Joseph Manzi Foundation donated $5,000 to the Town of Berlin Social Services for the Berlin Food Pantry. The foundation learned that the Berlin Food Pantry was very low on supplies and had many families in need. The board voted on the large donation in the hope that the assistance would help fill this need. Also voted on recently, after a request by the East Berlin Fire Department, is to purchase and supply the East Berlin Fire Department with an additional defibrillator, valued at $1,800. A few years ago the foundation purchased defibrillators for all four volunteer fire departments in town. The fire departments serve as first-responders and this equipment is critical in saving lives. The Joseph Manzi Foundation’s goal is to provide assistance and support to Berlin’s many local organizations, including Berlin schools and volunteer fire departments. The foundation’s major fundraiser is the annual Joseph Manzi Memorial Golf Tournament, held at Timberlin Golf Course. This year’s 13th tournament will be held Friday, June 12 with a noon shotgun start. For more information on the Joseph Manzi Foundation, donations and the tournament, visit www.joemanzigolf.com. Silver Lake is silent this morning. The swans, geese and ducks have taken flight. As I step onto the frozen surface, the shadows of the night still shape the mountains and trees on the lake’s perimeter. The morning sun begins to peek above the horizon reassuring me that night has passed and the new day’s opportunities are before me. I like the predictability of the daily cycles. Light always following the darkness both in nature and in life. I pass by charred tree limbs left from a fisherman’s camp fire. An empty pint bottle of whiskey is now lodged in the frozen ice. Fishing holes refilled with frozen water form reflective circular patterns on my path. I set my pace to the crunch of my boots as I continue around the lake. The silence of this peaceful morning has quieted the chattering of my mind. A more loving voice has taken its place. A freight train passes on nearby tracks piercing my reverie. The sun has now climbed higher in the sky forming a sparkling beam of light for me to follow. Other signs of life also begin to appear. Down the lake, an ice fisherman has set up camp. I head in his direction as his morning catch is reflected in the morning light. He holds a squirming wide mouth bass

Sports Lady ’Coats exact revenge
’Coats Notes
Indoor track competes at states By Nate Brown The Berlin Citizen
INDOOR TRACK The Redcoats competed in the Class M finals on Friday as the girls placed seventh overall (19 points). The BHS girls were led by their 4x200 meter relay team, which finished second overall. Juniors Taylor Budney and Sophia Morell and sophomores Sarah Daddario and Vanessa Reimer finished in 1:49.75, a mere quarter of a second off of Hillhouse’s winning time. The girls’ 1600 sprint medley also finished second overall to score another eight points for the Redcoats.
Budney, Reimer, junior Jody DiCicco, and senior Kristen Madeia finished in 4:21.68, leaving them five seconds off Tolland’s winning pace. The Lady ’Coats’ 4x800 team, comprised of seniors Taylor Lupini and Sarah Hagan, junior Michele Grieco and freshman Natalie Coucciro, finished fifth with a time of 10:26.59. Reimer also had a strong individual performance, finishing sixth in the 55 dash. The sophomore crossed the finish line in 7.55. For the Berlin boys, sophomore Mitchel Maslowksi finished seventh overall with a time of 6.94. He was .04 secSee Notes / Page 13

PLAINVILLE - The Lady Blue Devils were looking for the necessary win to qualify for the postseason. The Lady Redcoats were looking for revenge. In a spirited regular season finale, Berlin (10-10) found what it was looking for in a 5940 victory Monday night that eliminated Plainville (7-13) from playoff contention. “They got us last time in our gym, and we wanted to come here and make it right,” said Berlin coach Sheila King. “So that was our goal.” The last time the two teams met, Plainville stole a win on Berlin’s home court, 39-34, Jan. 23. That victory was one of seven for the Blue Devils as they entered their final contest of the season, needing a win to qualify for the postseason. From the tip, Berlin had no intention of letting that happen. The Redcoats jumped out to a 13-5 lead after one quarter behind multiple baskets from senior Alyssa Germano, who led all scorers with 22 points. “Alyssa has had a few good
games in a row now,” King said. “She’s very confident and the girls are doing a great job finding her, she’s doing a great job getting open and she’s playing with a lot of confidence. We’re just thrilled for her.” Yet with its season on the line, Plainville wasn’t ready to roll over so easily. Junior Stephanie Martino (10 points) single-handedly kept the Blue Devils in the game. “She’s our fighter. I can’t speak enough of her,” said Plainville coach Jennifer Gombotz. “I think she had maybe our first eight or 10 points of the game. She never lets up. She’s played every single minute of almost every single game this season, and I can’t ask any more of her. She’s a workhorse.” A fury of offense from the junior guard brought the host team within striking distance at 14-10. That was as close Plainville would get the rest of the night. Berlin used an 11-6 run to finish the half with a 25-16 lead before piling it on in the second half. The Redcoats outscored the Blue Devils 18-6 in the third to put the contest well out of
reach. “Alyssa Germano told them ‘We’re ahead, let’s keep pulling ahead’ and that’s all it takes is for the seniors to say something,” King said. “We as coaches could say it until we’re blue in the face, but to hear it from a peer, they’re good to go.” Aside from Germano’s offensive onslaught, she received plenty of support from another Alyssa: sophomore Alyssa Grant, who scored 14 points and proved to be a nuisance in the low post to every Plainville player who dared venture on the block. Sophomore Nina D’Amato added nine for the Redcoats, who have won three straight games heading into postseason play. Berlin is currently ranked 21st in the Class L standings, and will discover who its firstround opponent is Wednesday, Feb. 25. The Blue Devils got strong play from sophomore Taleah McCrorey and freshman Isabel Lozefski, who both scored eight points. “I think we had a lot of young players playing significant See Revenge / Page 15

ICE HOCKEY The co-op Indians won their seventh straight in dominating fashion, besting Farmington-Avon-Windsor, 6-2. Newington-Berlin-Manchester got off to a slow start, failing to score in the first frame; however, the team more than made up for it with a four-goal second period. Both NBM and FAW scored two goals apiece in the final period. Marco DiPaola, Luca DiPaola and Dante Gugliotti were all unstoppable, as each scored two goals for the Indians. Berlin resident Cam Criniti made 12 saves to help NBM further solidify a top spot in the Division II playoffs.

The Redcoats missed out on two opportunities last week while only playing one game. Berlin fell short of upsetting Maloney, 56-49, while also failing to move closer to a postseason berth. Berlin seemed poised for the big victory, as the locals took an impressive 43-32 advantage into the fourth quarter. However, the Spartans exploded for 24 points in the final frame while holding the ’Coats to a mere six points. Berlin held a 22-19 halftime lead. Junior Evan McKinnen had a strong game for the ’Coats, dropping 20 points to lead all scorers. Senior Dom Nuzzo added 13 points and junior Evan Cornwall chipped in six. No other Redcoat scored more than four. Berlin was bested from the free throw line throughout the contest, getting outscored 16-5 at the charity stripe. The Redcoats still have a chance to qualify for the postseason, yet the margin for error grows smaller with each passing game. The team needs three wins the make the Class L state tournament with only four games remaining in the regular season.
coglio (195) also walked away with victories. Berlin continued its strong performance at the CCC Invitational that saw three individuals finish undefeated: Arborio, Eliadas and Biscoglio. All three now boast records with 30 wins or more on the season. The Redcoats will look to keep their winning ways going when they compete in the Class M state championship this Friday and Saturday. “They’ve started to develop a strong work ethic, and they’re starting to carry that over into the whole six minutes (of a match),” said BHS coach Jim Day. “Technically, we’re more consistently operating from good position, so I’m excited about the coming weekend…I think we’ll peak this weekend and wrestle the

Tattoo directly. Most tattooers generally have an artistic style they like to apply to their designs, so be open to suggestion, and keep in mind that, if you’ve done your homework and found a reputable artist, they know more than you do about tattooing and what will work as a tattoo design, both aesthetically and technically. While most shops will generally accept walk-ins when possible, tattooers prefer appointments. Patience is a virtue. Be prepared to wait a few days, weeks, months, or even longer in the case of certain tattoo [artists]. If they’re booked out for a month or two, that [usually] means their work is in demand and they’re probably good. Be prepared to leave a deposit as well. Money talks and [nonsense] walks. By the same token, do not rush your tattooer through the tattoo process. Sleeves and back pieces aren’t finished in a day; some take years to complete, depending on the artist’s tattooing speed, appointment availability, your pain tolerance, and of, course, cash flow. You can’t expect an arm sleeve to be finished in a few weeks if you’re sitting for $100 worth of work at a time.

some cherry blossoms on the foot of this idiot college girl. She’d brought an entourage of six people with her to hold her hand while they told her it would be okay through the entire process. She screamed with every line I pulled and turned a half-hour project into an hour-long ordeal. In the middle of it, she kicked me in the forehead with her open tattoo. I put the machine down and walked away. I went and got a soda, took a few minutes to calm down, and I went back in the room. I yelled at her and told her if she moved again I would kick her out immediately and still charge her full price for her tattoo. She held perfectly still for the remainder of the process. Mind over matter. There was also a time that I tattooed another client who passed out while I was drawing the tattoo on him with a marker. He fell head first into my wall. What is your advice to people thinking about getting their first tattoo? If you find your tattoo on Google, or worse yet, Pinterest, don’t expect your tattooer to copy the design

It’s disgusting, it’s reckless, and you’ll eventually be going to a legitimate tattooer to have them fix it or cover it when you finally realize how terrible it looks. son. Is it solid? Is it faded? Does it look nice? Is it similar to how you want your tattoo to look? Go to the shop in person and take a look around to see if it’s a clean environment. Talk to the artist in question if you can about your project. They may require a consultation first. Price should not be an issue. Tattoos are an investment, and some can run you thousands of dollars to complete. Plan ahead, be reasonable, and be committed to the project. Tip your artist if they do a good job. If your friend is an “artist” and you let them draw your tattoo for you, keep in mind that your tattooer will probably have to redraw it to make it a tattooable design.
