Sundlun to share real life story of forgiveness By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen

WFSB anchor Kara Sundlun shares the amazing story of “Finding Dad: from ‘Love Child’ to Daughter” in her book that tells the true story of her journey reconciling with her father, Bruce Sundlun, who served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1991 to 1995. Sundlun is coming to the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m – a rescheduled appearance –giving residents plenty of time to Sundlun read “Finding Dad.” “We were disappointed that the blizzard forced us to cancel Kara Sundlun’s book talk and signing event, but are looking forward to See Sundlun / Page 5

Timberlin renovations on schedule By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen

Big changes are in the works for Timberlin Golf Course this year, with an expansion to the driving range on the way as well as a renovation of the Timberlin Clubhouse. A consultant has been hired for the design of the updates to the driving range, Chair of the Parks and Recreation commission Len Zielinski told The Citizen Jan. 29. The consultant will do an economic analysis for the driving range and determine the best course. “We are in a constrained area so we need to limit the flight of the balls,” Zielinski said. The updated driving range will include netting as a result. The plan also involves moving the location of the 18th hole to “create a more severe dogleg,” Zielinski said. Zielinski said during the Jan. 15 meeting of the commission that Timberlin is the secSee Timberlin / Page 4

As of last week, Public Works used only 30 percent of the budget for overtime and truck rental, and only 35 percent of the budget for salt. In 2014, the budgets were nearly three-quarters empty at the end of January. Excessive snow last year forced the Town Council to appropriate additional funds to snow removal.

The Public Works Department reminds residents of the local ordinances that apply to the removal of ice and snow from public roadways. Property owners are not allowed to shovel, throw or plow ice and snow from private property into, or across a public street. These actions are strictly prohibited and subject to a written warning and/or $100 fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code. Residents are responsible to clear snow and ice from any public sidewalk fronting along their property. All sidewalks are to be cleared and/or sanded within 24 hours of the completion of street plowing operations. It is the responsibility of the property owner fronting that sidewalk to make it safe for public travel. Failure to comply will subject the abutting property owner to a written warning and/or $100 fine as noted in the Town of Berlin Municipal Code. No Parking Bans become effective automatically (or at the discretion of the Director of Public Works) whenever there is an accumulation of four (4) inches or more of snow and ice on any of the streets of the town. No Parking Bans will terminate no sooner than eight (8) hours after any snowstorm, or as directed by the Director of Public Works. Any vehicle left parked on the street after such No Parking Ban has taken effect, will be towed and subject to a fine and all towing and storage charges. For more information, call the Public Works Department at (860) 828-7022.

Top pizza joint housed in unlikely spot The Berlin Citizen

Berlin residents can find award-winning pizza in an unexpected place: the Irving gas station on the Berlin Turnpike. Getachew “Getch” Dires and his wife Amelu “Amy” Tassew own and operate Randy’s Wooster St. Pizza Express, a pilot version of the Randy’s Wooster Street Pizza franchise, which has locations in Manchester and Storrs. Hartford Magazine recently featured the business as one of the top 10 pizza joints in the greater Hartford area, praising the “chewy-crunchy [crust as a] work of art.” Getch (many from Ethiopia use their first name for formal purposes) said he and his wife are “the only immigrants from East Africa in Berlin” operating a restaurant. “I take pride

in that,” he said. Getch and Amy immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia, a country that some may be surprised to hear truly “knows pizza,” said Getch, who explained Ethiopia was colonized by Italy. Getch said that it was “great” and “extremely exciting” for Randy’s Wooster St. Pizza to be featured as No. 10 out of 50 area pizzerias featured. Hartford Magazine’s Spencer Caldwell sampled pizza at 60 locations for the survey. Franchise owner “Randy Price studied the art of pizza-making on New Haven’s Wooster Street, and the results are priceless,” Caldwell wrote in Hartford Magazine. Price’s recipes, Getch said, truly deserve the praise. The restaurant owner hopes the recognition will bring more locals to try the

pizza at the express location in Berlin. Being located in a gas station has presented a challenge, Getch said, but if more customers would simply taste the pizza he is confident the food would speak for itself. Getch has been in Berlin for some two and a half years. Before that, he ran the Abyssinian Ethiopian Restaurant in Hartford. “I ran that business for three years and we were the only African restaurant in Hartford,” Getch said. Some people may have a perception that “at a gas station, you won’t find a good thing,” Getch said, but customers may be surprised when they discover that “you can get award-winning pizza here… made completely fresh. We use fresh products here, following Mr. Randy’s recipes... We don’t (use) any

Street Pizza is a legitimate Central Pizza stronghold,” wrote reviewer Jason M. who closed his review quipping, “Unlike gasoline, the price of this pizza won’t fluctuate wildly on the account of a Wall Street speculation conniption fit.”

As for funding, one possibility is adding a fee to golf games. After the last major renovations, a $1 fee was added for a ninehole round and $2 for 18 holes. “We got great support from the golfing community

on that,” Zielinski said, and golfers were happy to pay the small fees because they could see a direct benefit. These fees funded the bunker renovation that occurred in 2004, which also helped improve irrigation and drainage. The course now has “a highly sophisticated irrigation system” that uses less water, Zielinski said. The other major update to the course this year will be the renovations to the clubhouse. Last year, snow caused a truss failure on the roof. The roof has also had many problems with leaks. “Timberlin was built in 1971,” Zielinski said, and it is time for an update. The renovations will include a new vinyl membrane roof, more efficient air conditioning, new ceiling tiles, lighting, and carpeting. The bar will also be rebuilt, as the old bar has had issues with water leaks. These renovations are scheduled to be completed by March 1, and golfers will be able to enjoy the updated clubhouse this year.

Sundlun filed a paternity suit at the age of 17, resulting in a paternity test confirming that Bruce Sundlun was her father. The story was widely picked up by the media, but this did not prevent the two from reconciling and building a “real father-daughter relationship,” Sundlun said. Now, 20 years later, Sundlun remains close to the family she never knew before she was a teenager. She spends Thanksgiving with members of the Sundlun family, and her half-siblings are a part of the lives of her children. Sundlun said that sharing her story two decades later has been a joyful experience. “I feel really blessed. But not to fear. The new train stations in Wallingford, Meriden and Berlin will have security cameras, a “platform snow-melting system” and charging stations for electric vehicles. Let’s be hopeful, but not delusional, about what boosterism can accomplish. Miracles? Maybe not.

’Coats Notes

Ballers falter, swimmers win By Nate Brown The Berlin Citizen

Boys basketball Another frustrating week for the Redcoats saw the locals fall to 4-9 for the season, as their window of opportunity to make the postseason begins to shrink. The boys began their week with a 55-37 loss to Simsbury in a matchup that was decided early on. Berlin found itself in a 19-7 deficit following one quarter, and Simsbury extended its lead to 33-17 at the half. The visitors outscored the host ’Coats 22-20 in the second half. Junior Jake McCarthy led Berlin with 11 points and senior teammate Dominic Nuzzo added 10. Junior Evan Cornwall and sophomore Spencer Duke added five points apiece for Berlin. The Redcoats fared better in their matchup with Bristol Central but still fell to the Rams, 59-49, to finish their week without a victory. After a gridlock 16-16 first quarter, the Rams outscored the Redcoats 13-9 in both the second and third quarters. The final frame also played out in Bristol Central’s favor as BC outscored Berlin 17-15. McCarthy once again led the way for the Redcoats, this time with 16 points, while fellow junior Evan McKinnen added seven points. Cornwall and Duke each scored six points while senior R.J. Veneziano and junior Kyle Mahoney netted five apiece. Heading into this week, the Berlin boys needed four more wins to clinch a spot in the Class M state tournament with seven games remaining.

Indians was over early as the Redcoats fell behind 2411 following one quarter of play. Northwest buried Berlin with a 28-7 second quarter that proved to be too much to overcome. Junior Sam Lynes led the Lady ’Coats with 11 points while senior teammate Samantha Bilinsky added 10. Sophomore Nina D’Amato added eight points and sophomores Alyssa Grant and Heather Sullivan scored six points apiece for the locals. Any hopes to break the losing streak against Bristol Central fell short in the final frame, as the Rams outscored the Lady Redcoats 16-2 in the final frame to put Berlin away 51-32. The hometown team was held under 10 points in two separate quarters while Bristol Central easily reached double figures in each frame. Bilinsky scored eight points to lead Berlin. Junior Megan Pskowski added six and Lynes and freshman Alana Garofalo scored five points each. Despite the recent freefall in both the CCC South and Class M standings, the Redcoats are still well within striking distance of the postseason. At press time, with eight games remaining, the Berlin girls needed just two more wins to clinch a spot in the state tournament.

Boys swimming and diving

The Redcoats captured their first win of the regular season with a 94-89 decision over Simsbury. “Sometimes after a meet, I’ll usually tell the guys that there were a couple events, at least, that we could’ve gotten a little more out of it,” BHS coach Dan Thurston said. Girls basketball “I told the guys that I honA four-game losing skid has estly couldn’t say that about left the Lady Redcoats look- this meet. Notes

Co-op hockey A strong 2-0 week has helped the co-op Indians improve to 9-4 on the year as they begin to eye the state tournament, coming up in the not-so-distant future. Newington-Berlin-Manchester began its week with a 7-0 blowout of Rockville-Bolton-Coventry-RHAM. If the matchup wasn’t decided after the first period of play, it most definitely was by the end of the second. NBM led 3-0 after one frame, and

finished its scoring onslaught in the second. Luca DiPaola dropped a hat trick on RBCR while Paul Ciarcia added two more goals. Marco DiPaola and Dante Gugliotti got in on the fun with one goal each. Berlin resident Cam Criniti made 21 saves to record his second shutout of the year. The Indians faced a familiar foe in their final game of the week, RBCR, and came

away with another win, albeit a much closer score at 2-1. Both Luca DiPaola and Marco DiPaola scored to help bring home the bacon while Criniti needed only 11 saves to help wrap up yet another “W.” As of press time, the Indians were ranked second in Division II with 46 quality points from their wins, just behind Conard (49). The two teams will square off later in the season.

Diccio, Lupini, Morell, and Reimer combined for the strong effort. Their male counterparts in the same event took home an eighth place finish with a final time of 3:58.66. enal. It was great to watch throughout. No matter what happened, there was a determination there.” Berlin received contributions across the board to help bring home win number one. Junior Nick Baruffi placed second in the 200 meter individual medley and picked up a third in the 500 freestyle, dropping seconds off his best time. Fellow junior John Long swam his best races of the year in the 200 freestyle (third place) and dropped 14 seconds off of his personal best in the 500 freestyle. Freshman Andrew Leary had a crucial anchor leg in the 200 medley relay to help Berlin take a second place finish after another Redcoat team had already touched the wall to finish first. BHS sophomore Joey Leary also dropped times to record personal bests, despite feeling under the weather.

the CCC Championship Saturday, as the local girls took home seventh place with 28 points and the boys finished 27th with one point. The Lady Redcoats were led by their 4x800 meter relay team, which finished fourth. The squad – consisting of seniors Sarah Hagen and Taylor Lupini, junior Jodi Diccio, and freshman Natalie Couciero – finished the relay in 10:31.83. Lupini also had a strong individual performance, in the long jump, where the senior placed fourth with a distance of 15-11.25. BHS sophomore Hannah Schultz also performed well in the event, finishing ninth (14-6). Diccio ran well in her individual event, the 1000 meter, where she finished fifth (3:07.61). The Berlin girls’ 4x200 relay team – comprised of juniors Taylor Budney and Sophia Morell and sophomores Sarah Daddario and Vanessa Reimer – also impressed, as the quartet finished fourth with a time of 1:50.58. lin was able to come out on top 37-26 in a match that featured plenty of strong takedowns on either side. “(We were) inconsistent,” BHS coach Jim Day said of his team’s performance against Maloney. “I thought that there were some weight classes that performed very well and there were some weight classes that we have to continue to work on. We have a month before states so we’ll keep plugging away at it.” Leading the surge towards the postseason were Drew Mals (134 pound class), Devon Reilly (182), and Nick Arborio (108). All three recorded pins against the Spartans, yet were far from done for the week. The three boast records of 20-11, 23-2, and 24-3, respectively, while Arborio’s only defeat of the week came at

They’re starting to understand the effort it takes to compete at a high level in the state so they’re not afraid of the hard work, and I’m very pleased about that,” Day said. “And there are some things technically that are coming around, so I think that the majority of us will be well prepared for states.” Berlin fell short against

the hands of the state’s number one ranked wrestler. He was able to take out his frustrations on the state’s number three ranked wrestler, as Reilly himself bested the number five ranked wrester in the state. Another crucial part of the Redcoats’ success is Jeremy Eliadas (170), whose 5-0 week helped him improve to 26-1 on the year. Eliadas finished first in the Connecticut Challenge tournament, and is currently ranked second in the state. Despite the team’s top talent, though, there is some drop off throughout the roster. While Berlin’s lineup features seven wrestlers who’ve won 20 matches or more, it also features four wrestlers who’ve won less than 10.
