Aresimowicz praises passage of sentencing reform By Charles Kreutzkamp

General Assembly passed a Len Fasano (R-North Haven, sentencing reform bill titled Durham) who was one of the The Berlin Citizen
cosponsors on a modified bill. The bill makes changes to criminal prosecution of drug offenders, including reducing the penalty for first-time offenders to a misdemeanor. CGA House Majority
Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin, Southington) told The Citizen he thinks that support for sentencing reform has been building for many years, noting that many people are in jail for nonvio-
lent drug offenses. He said the bill will “make sure those charged with crimes are treated in a more appropriate manner.” See Reform / Page 2

100-year-old business evolves for a new century By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
One hundred years after Hadfield’s Team Sports was founded, Brian and Ruth Teske, who bought the company in 2010, are carrying the name forward and changing the company with the times. Berlin’s state representative Joe Aresimowicz visited the company at 386 Deming Road last week. “The business has really transformed over the years, with a focus on team sports,” Aresimowicz said, adding that the success of the business is “a real testament” to the Teske’s hard work. Aresimowicz called the bill a “good first step,” and said that he will be monitoring the impact of it over the coming years. Fasano explained in public hearing testimony that he supported provisions to change possession of small amounts of illegal drugs to misdemeanors and a pilot program for courts to place offenders in addict rehabilitation programs to keep them out of prison. He said that he did not support “at this time” changes to the Board of Pardons and Parole, saying “more examination and investigation” is needed. Fasano was not immediately available for comment. Under the bill, drug possession is a misdemeanor but repeat offenders will face a class E felony charge. Mandatory minimum sentences for drug possession near a school or daycare was also repealed. The Connecticut Mirror
notes that most urban housing is within the 1,500 feet of a school or daycare specified in the repealed law. The Mirror also notes that although some legislators opposed the bill as soft on crime, sentencing reform is favored by many Republican presidential candidates, including Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. “This is what happens

The performer said that attending a juggling festival was part of what attracted him to juggling, but the other part is passion for the athleticism needed to pull off the stunts. Girardi performs shows for children, families and adults and founded Bending Gravity Entertainment in 1998. His accolades include more than a half dozen awards, and he has even been featured on Duncan YoYo merchandise as a sponsored member of Duncan Crew USA. Girardi said he often participates in shows for libraries, and at Berlin-Peck he adapted his show with stories about juggling heroes to suit the library’s summer reading Follow us on Twitter: @Berlin_Citizen

The Farmers Market is back and better than ever at its new location, Hungerford Park. “We were in limbo looking for a location and it couldn’t have worked out better,” said Jane Georgini, Market Master. The market’s old location was at A.S. Labieniec. The New Britain Youth Museum at Hungerford Park, located in Berlin, approached the Farmers Market offering
to host it. “They thought it would be a good match,” Georgini said. The new location has more space and superior parking. Georgini also said she enjoyed the sight of the museum’s peacock, one of several exhibited animals, up on the museum building while setting up in the morning. Visitors can come to the Farmers Market and then go for a walk on the free hiking trails or visit the museum, or-

The objectives of this program are to reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities from hazardous driving through increased high-visibility speed enforcement activities. And, additionally, to advise the public of the increased levels of speed enforcement activities so drivers will realize the risks and consequences of operating a vehicle hazardously and therefore deter that behavior. In order to achieve these objectives the department will increase enforcement actions, specifically infractions/ misdemeanors thereby reducing the instances of speeding on the town’s rural roads. We also will educate the public by advertising this speed enforcement via newsprint and social media. The program’s

Sports Red-White game does not disappoint (Editor’s note: Due to a production error, the 2014 Red-White game story mistakenly appeared in the July 2 edition of The Citizen. The following is the 2015 Red-White game recap.) On Friday, June 12, the Berlin Redcoats held their annual Red-White football game. The contest, which pits members of both the varsity and jayvee teams against one another, saw the Red squad come out on top in an overtime thriller. Tied at 12 entering extra play, White had a chance to score first. However, Red’s defense stood tall at the goal line to allow their offense a chance to end the game. On Red’s second play from scrimmage, they found the end zone to take home an 18-12 victory. After the game, coach John Capodice spoke highly of his squad. “These guys have already proved to be hard workers,” Capodice said. “They’ve committed themselves to the gym every chance they get and have worked extremely hard in spring
practice”. He went on to say how excited he was to work with this group of motivated young men, guys who made the Red-White game quite a battle. A favored White team jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead, yet the Red squad refused to roll over, scoring in the third to cut White’s lead in half, 12-6. With the game on the line and Red driving on its last possession of the game, they found the end zone to tie the game at 12 and send the contest into overtime. The enthusiasm was both exhilarating and contagious as the crowd cheered for both sides. Comments such as “I can’t wait for this season to begin” could be heard from parents, grand-parents, students, and players alike. Berlin will kick off its season on Friday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. against Bloomfield at Sage Park. — Submitted by Bob DeFrancesco
Women’s bocce league celebrates fun first year By Nate Brown
The Berlin Citizen
Girls just wanna have fun. And what fun it was. This summer, for the first time in the Berlin Italian Club’s history, there was an all women’s bocce league in action. Taking place on Thursday nights and running for eight weeks, the league allowed women from around town to learn about the game while gathering in fellowship each week. Members of the league gathered at the Italian Club Thursday, July 9 to celebrate the end of their inaugural season. Beve Ruggiero, one of the co-presidents of the new league, came up with the idea while playing the sport – an Italian game similar to lawn bowling but played on a shorter, narrower green – during the club’s Monday night co-ed league. “The women that are getting older, rather than play-
ing in the women’s 30 and older softball league, or the 36-week bowling league, we wanted to do something different, so we saw this as the opportunity to do something,” said Ruggiero, who played with her brother, Fran Keating, in the co-ed league the past three years. Ruggiero got in contact with members of the men’s club at the BIC – formerly the Italian Independent Political Club – including vice president Dan Ciccarillo, who helped to get the women on the right track. Also joining Ruggiero in planning for the women’s bocce league was co-president Diane Egazarian, who helped spread the word around town. “People were so excited,” Egazarian said. “The women’s reactions were very positive.” Comprised of 48 participants – eight teams with six women each – league members enjoyed plenty of camaraderie in their first summer

the more competitive of the two. “A lot of the men bocce players came down to see how (the women) would play, and we’re trying to teach them how to play, and all the guys are on the sidelines telling them what to do,” Badolato said. “And the women actually got upset and told them if they wanted to hear from men, they would’ve stayed home and listened to their husbands. “They said, ‘This is our night, let us learn the game and learn from experience rather than you telling us where to stand and what to do.’ It worked out. They picked up the game and a lot of them are very, very good.” Despite the eight weeks passing too quickly, many of the women won’t have to wait long to compete again. The women’s bocce league will have a fall season starting on Tuesday, Sept. 8 which also will run for eight weeks. Next year’s summer league is set to begin Thursday, May 5. While there is already a waiting list for the fall league, Ruggiero would encourage women who are interested in playing bocce to sign up sooner rather than later. As many can attest, it’s definitely worth their while.
“I didn’t really know much about it because I’d never played before, but it was great,” said Marie Siegal, one of the participants in the summer league. “We’ve met new people, you play new people every week and I really enjoyed it.” For more information on the women’s bocce league, contact Beve Ruggiero via e-mail: bevejerrlace@att.net.

Operation Fuel and its statewide network of fuel banks are accepting applications for energy assistance from households that are in danger of having their utility services shut off this summer. Currently, there are lower-income families and individuals who face losing their electricity or gas services because they do not have the resources to keep up with the rising cost of energy in Connecticut. Some families have reported needing assistance from Operation Fuel during the summer due to high balances on their utility bills that resulted from trying to keep their homes warm this past winter. The annual winter moratorium, which prevents households from having their utilities shut off, ended on May 1 and doesn’t resume until Nov. 1. Energy affordability is a year-round problem for nearly 305,000 Connecticut
households. Lower-income families and elderly people on fixed incomes are more vulnerable to high energy costs, which represent a significant household expense and impact their ability to pay for food, housing, health care and other basic necessities. Individuals who need energy assistance should call 211. For more information on Operation Fuel or to make a donation, go to www.operationfuel.org. Donations also can be sent to Operation Fuel, 75 Charter Oak Ave., Suite 2-240, Hartford, CT 06106. Operation Fuel is a private, nonprofit program that provides emergency energy assistance through its statewide network of fuel banks to lower-income working families and individuals, the elderly, and disabled individuals who are in financial crisis and not eligible for energy assistance from government-funded programs.
