Berlin limo company must pay $500,000

A federal court judgment announced July 9 has determined that a Berlin limousine service, S.D. Transportation Services LLC, known as Premier Limousine, 76 Fuller Way, must pay $500,000 in back wages and liquidated damages, according to U.S. Department of Labor.

Premier Limousine, which provides service buses, sedans, limos, and vans, is owned by Stephen DiMarco and was named Best Limousine Company in Hartford for Service by Hartford Magazine readers for 14 years straight as of 2014.

PMC states that each rider commits to raise between $500 and $5,000. Crowe has beaten his goal every year, and his dedication to the ride is such that he rode in the challenge only two weeks after his wife passed away. He began riding the year before, during Sandy Crowe’s 5-year battle with cancer.

Rich Crowe rides in the Pan Mass Challenge to raise money for cancer research every year. A great thing about the organization, according to Crowe, is that every cent of donations raised by the riders goes directly to support cancer research.

“I’ve been extremely blessed with the numbers of people who have gotten on board with me. We call ourselves Team Sandy,” Crowe said.

This year, the two-day bike ride will span from Sturbridge, MA to Provincetown, MA., a distance of more than 190 miles with an ascent of 4,000 feet. According to the PMC website, the first day of the ride “is the longest and most difficult leg of the event.”

Berlin resident Rich Crowe recently hit a milestone in his years of raising money to support cancer research: His efforts have now generated more than $100,000 in only four years of riding his bicycle in the Pan Mass Challenge in memory of his wife, Sandy, who passed away from leukemia in 2011.

“It’s a lot of support and it’s something I am humbled by,” Crowe said in a phone interview.

Sandy Crowe “would do anything for anyone at the drop of a hat,” recalled Michelle Bartley, daughter of Rich and Sandy Crowe. Bartley said her mother cared deeply about volunteering.

For over thirty (30) years, the Berlin Water Control Commission has provided the residents of Berlin, Connecticut with a safe, palatable supply of drinking water. This bulletin has been prepared to provide the approximately 2,500 residential, commercial and industrial customers of this supply with the confidence that the water they consume meets and, in most cases, exceeds all State and Federal requirements for drinking water.

The Berlin Water Control Commission was established in 1966. During the period extending from January 1, 2013 to DECEMBER 31, 2013, it sold Three Hundred Eighty Million, Sixty Four Thousand, Four Hundred and Twenty Eight (380,064,028) gallons of water to its residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

The Berlin Water Control Commission produced 52% (196,985,428 gallons) of its water needs and purchased 43% from the New Britain Water Department (163,662,400 gallons) and 5% from the Cromwell Water Department (19,616,600 gallons). This report covers that portion of the supply originating from wells owned and operated by the Commission. Reports on those portions of the supply provided by the New Britain Water Department and the Cromwell Fire District can be provided upon request.

The Berlin Water Control Commission supply, excluding that provided by the New Britain Water Department and the Cromwell Interconnection, comes from two (2) sources: ELTON Well #1A; and ELTON Well #2A.

These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

WATER CONSERVATION: Water is our most valuable natural resource. It is essential for life as we know it. Although we in the Northeast have been blessed with, at least until now, what appears to be an unlimited supply of pure, safe drinking water, the preservation of this valuable resource is the responsibility of all.

Following are just a few of the many steps that we can all take to prevent the waste and, perhaps loss, of this most valuable gift: 1.

Detect and repair leaky faucets and toilets.

Install water-efficient showers and dish-and/or-clothes washers Limit the time spent in showering.

Water lawns and gardens only when needed, and then only early (or late) in the day to prevent water loss by evaporation during the hot period of the day. Add mulch when possible to prevent evaporation.

5. Wash automobiles only when absolutely necessary.

6. Do not leave water running when shampooing or brushing one’s teeth.

If we all take these steps as well as any others that you may think of, we will be able to assure ourselves and future generations of a safe, potable drinking water supply for many years to come. Continuous monitoring is also being carried out to provide further protection for our consumers.

A third (3rd) well, Swede Pond: Production Well #2, installed in 1973 (a well with a depth of 92 feet and a capacity of 550 gallons per minute) was replaced by Well #2A in 1996.

The Berlin Water Control Commission is proud to offer this report to its customers; and to report that all of the State and Federal requirements for Public Water have not only met but, in most cases, exceeded every standard set by the State and Federal Agencies for quality and safety.

ELTON Well #1 was installed in 1973 and rehabilitated in 1994 and 1997; Well #1 was replaced in 1998 and reclassified as Well #1A.

ELTON Well #2A (with a depth of 95 feet and a production of 350 gallons per minute, as stated above) was placed in service in 1996.

Water from ELTON Wells #1A and #2A are blended together prior to entering the distribution system.

As required by the Connecticut State Department of Health, the Berlin Water Control Commission has to have two tradesmen classified as Treatment Operators Class 1 and one tradesman classified as Class 2.

The Water Control Commission has two tradesmen classified as Distribution Operators Class 1 and one tradesman classified as Class 2.

Monthly testing of the water supplied by the Berlin Water Control Commission has shown that the water has met or exceeded every standard set by the State and Federal Agencies for quality and safety.

The following tables summarize the analytical results of water samples taken from various locations within the distribution system. As shown, other than trihalomethanes (produced by chlorination), the only organic chemical detected in any of the samples was Trichloroethene, detected in a very low concentration in water taken from Well #1A. A study conducted for the Berlin Water Control Commission by a private company, Geological Services, Inc., found that the railroad was responsible for the contamination. It is important to note that this level is well below recommended limits and presents no known health hazard.

Table I includes all of the REGULATED contaminants that were detected during the 2013 sampling season (or the last required testing/reporting calendar year period for some parameters). Although all were well below Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), the following lists their significance and possible reasons: Chlorides are an indicator of sewage pollution if found in concentrations higher than normal for the area. Normal chloride concentrations vary with distance from bodies of salt water.

Haloacetic Acids (HAA5s): are formed as a result of chlorine, used in the disinfection process, reacting with natural occurring organic acids.

Levels well above the MCL (Maximum Contaminant Level) may cause cancer.

Nitrate Nitrogen can enter potable water as runoff from fertilizers or, as in most cases, from erosion of natural deposits. High concentrations, in excess of 9 parts per million (ppm) may cause a condition know as Methemoglobinemia when given to very young infants. It can also be transmitted to infants by nursing mothers who have consumed the water.

Sodium: Persons with high blood pressure, hypertension, congestive heart disease or persons on a low salt diet should consult their physician before consuming a drinking water source with a high sodium level.

Sulfate: Desirable limit is 250 milligrams per liter (mg/L) Sulfate has no beneficial effects and has health effects at high concentrations (laxative and taste deterioration).

Trichloroethene (TCE) Some people who drink water containing Trichloroethylene in excess of the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) over many years could experience problems with their liver, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) are those compounds created by the chlorination of drinking water by the reaction of the chlorine or organic matter.

A Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 100 milligrams per liter (mg/L) has been established. Some people who drink water containing Trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL, over many years, may experience problems with their liver, kidneys or central nervous system, or may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

Turbidity is a measure of the cloudiness of water. It is monitored because it is a good indicator of water quality. High turbidity levels can also hinder the effectiveness of disinfection.

Table II of this report summarizes the results of lead and copper testing. Federal regulations require that homes be periodically sampled by having the homeowner collect a one-liter sample from the cold-water kitchen tap as a “first draw” (after the water has been standing motionless in household pipes for at least six hours). During the last lead and copper sampling round conducted in 2012, the Berlin Water Control Commission collected samples from twenty homes. Less than 10% of the homes sampled were above the action level set by the EPA; therefore, the Berlin Water Control Commission remains in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule.

Copper: Copper is an essential nutrient, but some people who rink water containing copper in excess of the action level over a relatively short amount of time could experience gastrointestinal distress. Some individuals who may drink water containing elevated copper in excess of the action level over may years could suffer liver or kidney damage. People with Wilson’s disease should consult their personal health provider.

During the lead and copper monitoring period conducted in 2012, there were no exceedances of the copper action level en any of the first draw samples collected by the homeowners.

Lead: If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The Berlin Water Control Commission is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting in the residential plumbing for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Another simple way to reduce the possible exposure to lead is to regularly clean your faucet screens to remove material that may become trapped in the screen. Some of that material may be lead particles from your home’s internal plumbing. Finally, do not use hot water from the tap to make infant formula or for cooking. Hot water may have higher mineral content than the cold water supplied by the Berlin Water Control Commission.

Infants and young children who drink water containing lead in excess of the action level could experience delays in their physical or mental development. Children could show slight deficits in attention span and learning abilities. Adults who drink water containing lead in excess of the action level over many years can develop kidney problems or high blood pressure. Infants and young children are typically more vulnerable to lead in drinking water than the general population. While the Berlin Water Control Commission uses no lead pipes in its distribution system, it is possible that lead levels may be elevated in your home, which is a result of materials used in your home’s plumbing. The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: •

Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

•

Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or resulting from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming.

•

Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.

•

Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems.

•

Radioactive contaminants, which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establishes limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-7491). However, some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer

DiMarco stated that the company chose to settle the case “to put the matter behind us” after a “vigorous defense.” According to court documents, the company entered into the settlement agreement to “avoid further cost as well as the uncertainty of litigation.”

“The law throughout the country is still unsettled,” the company said in a statement.

According to Michelle Garvey, district director of the Wage and Hour Division’s Hartford office, “these types of labor violations are all too common in the limousine industry.”

Garvey said that the Department of Labor Investigation, which resulted in a suit filed two years ago, “found many employees working long hours without any overtime compensation.”

The Department of Labor has made unannounced visits to limousine services throughout the state to check for violations, with a goal of ensuring “a level playing field for law-abiding employers,” Garvey said.

According to a statement released by The Department of Labor, Premier Limousine was found in violation of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act by “underpaying

Donna (Mayer) Kulas her sister, Patricia (Mayer) KENSINGTON — Donna (Mayer) Kulas, 57, of Kensington, loving wife of Kenneth Kulas Sr., and mother of Kenneth Kulas Jr., died peacefully Monday, July 7, 2014, at Yale New Haven Hospital with her family by her side.

Born in New Britain, she was the daughter of the late William and Shirley (McCormack) Mayer. She graduated from Berlin High School and attended Central Connecticut State University.

She was employed as a loan officer at Farmington Bank. She was a member of St. Paul’s Church and Chairperson of BSA Troop 24. Donna loved spending time in her garden and was an excellent baker – her specialties were her chocolate chip cookies and chocolate cream pie, but her greatest joy in life was her family.

In addition to her husband, son, and dog, ‘Bear’, Donna is also survived by

The family would like to thank the MICU staff at the Smilow Cancer Hospital for the love and care they showed Donna during her time there.

Opinion Letters to the Editor Setting the record straight To the editor: As Pastor of the faithful people of Prince of Peace Church in Berlin, I feel compelled to clear up the misrepresentation of who we are made by Ms. Helm in the July 3 copy of The Berlin Citizen.

Ms. Helm obviously knows absolutely nothing about our church. She proved that by saying we are a “failing church.” Quite simply, nothing could be farther from the truth. We have been in Berlin for 53 years and are not going anywhere. We are a small but vibrant people of God who has served the Berlin community since our inception.

We are thankful to God for our ministry and do all we can to provide a welcoming atmosphere and do what we can for our town. Failing? Nothing could be more preposterous.

The second error on Ms. Helm’s part can be found in her statement that any money received from AT&T will be a “financial bailout.” Once

again she could not be farther off the mark. Prince of Peace is a financially strong congregation who uses a great deal of her resources trying to accomplish the mission of Jesus – caring for the widowed and orphaned, the hungry and homeless locally, nationally and internationally.

It is simply the most hurtful thing imaginable for us to be spoken of as “failing” and dependent on outside money for our survival.

What we will do with any income from AT&T is to do more for others as we have always done.

I cannot remember Ms. Helm attacking the good people of the local parish that allowed a cellular apparatus placed in their steeple.

I believe it to be within two miles of her home. I know the Pastor and many of the people of this parish who, like us, are the people of God and would never do anything they deemed dangerous for themselves, the town, or the children of their nursery school, which is just around the cor-

ner from their steeple. Why not, Ms. Helm?

Manzi tournament a success To the editor: The Joseph Manzi Foundation’s 12th annual golf tournament, held at the Timberlin Golf Course on Friday, June 13, was a huge success in spite of the rain. The tournament committee and the Manzi family would like to thank all the golfers, volunteers, sponsors and dinner guests that participated.

Through the generosity of many, we have been able to give back to the Berlin community and thereby keep Joe’s memory alive. Our wish and goal is to continue to do so.

The month of July got off to a fantastic start.

The United States men’s soccer team was ousted on the first day of the month from World Cup competition.

And, personally, I couldn’t be happier that they lost.

But before you grab your torches and pitchforks, let’s play a little game of trivia: Newly-minted American and World Cup legend Tim Howard, who made a remarkable 16 saves in the United States’ 2-1 loss to Belgium, plays for which Major League Soccer team when not sporting the stars and stripes?

If you know the answer, kudos to you.

If you don’t, find a bucket of water to douse those torches.

You see, I’m a fan of the World Cup. Seeing the finest the sport of futbol has to offer from countries around the globe, meeting once every four years to crown a champion, is unlike just about every other athletic event in existence, aside from the Olympics.

Yet I just can’t offer up my support for Team USA. At least not yet.

I find it difficult to sit by idly and root for a team I know nothing about. Aside from knowing that Howard would be playing for the Yanks in the 2014 Cup, one of the few pieces of information I knew about this year’s team was that Landon Donovan was staying home.

That truly was the extent of my knowledge about the U.S. soccer team.

Yet blind faith and patriotism just wasn’t enough for me to root for my home nation this time around.

Sure, I easily could’ve thrown on a red, white, and blue bandana, popped open an overly-American beer, and stood around in a

crowded room with a ton of people who also knew very few intricacies about the sport of soccer, rattling off that nails-on-a-chalkboard chant of “I believe that we will win, ” but I just couldn’t do it.

I’ve always been a fan of particular sports teams for two reasons. One: I enjoy watching them play through good times and bad, and, two: I know more about the team than a few players’ names and the team’s colors.

I give it my all when it comes to fandom, and pretending to know anything about the United States men’s soccer team and act like I care for a couple weeks was not how I planned on spending the 2014 World Cup. Instead, I stood back, surveyed the field of 32 teams, and made a conscious decision: although I wouldn’t select one favorite for this year’s Cup, I would watch as many matches as I could with fervor and admiration, rooting for whatever countries care more for the sport of futbol year-round than America does.

In short, I rooted for roughly 31 of 32 teams in the field of group play.

America is a very proud country, especially when competing on a national scale. But to say that our country cares more about the sport of soccer than those who live in CamerSee Futbol / Page 11

Futbol love for the sport is alive and well in the States.

Just not at a national level. At least not yet. And most definitely not year round. If it was, two things would have happened by now.

The first: those still reading who haven’t used this column as kindling for their torches would be able to answer my question from earlier about Tim Howard and what club he plays for.

I’ll give you a hint: it was a trick question. Howard doesn’t play for an MLS club, but rather Everton of the English Premier League.

Which leads me to my second argument: if the sport was really growing in America, I’m sure more players from Team USA would actually play

as saying that he didn’t believe it was up to members of Team USA to help build the sport stateside: “I suppose it’s talked about in that context where it is on our shoulders to grow the sport.

We go out and play a beautiful game -- or at least we try to -- and the supporters are either attracted to that or not,” Howard said.

I don’t quote this try to turn a nation against its newest sports hero. But it sure doesn’t look as though America’s finest talent will be going out of its way anytime soon to ensure that the sport thrives in the States

year round, rather than once every presidential term.

So when Belgium and the United States squared off in their Round of 16 matchup July 1, you can sure bet that I was rooting for the country that roots for the beautiful game all year long.

And when the final horn sounded, I was quite pleased with the outcome.

The nation whose fan base is comprised of true fans was victorious.

Three cheers for the black, yellow, and red. Both the players, and the fans, deserved it.

The league, which held the first annual Ryan Lee Megabowl Championship last summer, will continue playing the title game with Lee’s name attached to it.

With a 3-point contest, slam dunk competition, and rock and jock celebrity game, the night is sure to be a success.

This year, the league will be collecting donations on behalf of Jessica Kasprzyk, a 27-year-old Berlin resident battling cancer.

Since its inception several years ago, Berlin’s Sunday Night Basketball League has served as a summertime outlet for the collegiate men and other young adults of the ever vibrant town.

Over the past nine years, the SNBL has received its fair share of support to continue to run efficiently, allowing its participants to play with little financial worry on their minds.

In return, the SNBL has been doing its part to give back to those in the community who could use assistance, as well.
