Kevin Quinn, of Berlin, was honored on the field at Fenway Park prior to the Boston Red Sox game against the Atlanta Braves on June 15. Quinn was named the Blood Donor of the Game after donating blood with the American Red Cross.
Since 1898, local farmers have come to A.S. Labieniec for food and supplies for their animals. As of June 4, the business at 817 Farmington Ave. is under new ownership – and John and Joyce Conner are committed to preserving that history. The married couple met when John worked the counter at the iconic Berlin business. Both come from families that raised animals. “One day we were talking and we hit it off,” Joyce said. “We became friends first, and then we dated. Three years after that we got married.” “If it wasn’t for Labieniec’s we never would have met,” The new owners of A.S. Labieniec, the Conner Joyce said. family. | Charles Kreutzkamp / The

means much when comparing students from different high schools. SATs can compare “apples to apples,” while class rank can be a “false metric,” the principal said. The board also voted unanimously to increase school lunch prices by five cents at each school. “It has definitely been a tough year … there has been a decrease in lunch participation,” an official explained. The increase will keep prices “right in line” with area schools, he said, with the cost raised from $2.95 to $3 at the high school. The price is less for middle and elementary school students. It was reported the schools have made changes to bring menus into compliance with healthy eating standards in the past years.

The Conners have been together 16 years and have a 10-year-old son. They always dreamed of one day owning the feed store – and they plan to keep the name. “When I worked for the Labieniecs, they treated me as part of their family,” John said. He worked at the store during his high school years and wants to keep the tradition alive. The store has long been staffed by young people from area towns. “Everyone comes in asking for (employee) Holly (Ceruti)”, Joyce said. The new owners are keeping all the previous employees. When previous owner Carlene Quinn decided to retire, she called in the Conners. “She always knew we had an interest in it,” John said. Lessening the focus on class rank would also give students “the freedom to take risks” and take classes related to their vocational interests, Kennedy said. Customers have praised the new set up, she said. The couple’s son, Charles, has been helping get things in shape. He said he was happy to see his parents fulfill their dream. Joyce and John both love animals and have raised chickens, horses, rabbits, cats and dogs. The feed store itself now has an official mascot in the form of a rabbit, Hershey, who can be found near a front window.

The Conners spent some six months learning the business before taking over and they’re keeping items popular with customers, including fresh local eggs, local honey and a Connecticut-made brand of dog food. The biggest change they have made has been to reorganize the shelves – as it gets cold in the back of the store during the winter, pet food and other staple items have been moved closer to the front. Also, the Conners said they are striving to carry a good selection of organic products, including in an expanded lawn and garden section. “We’re giving it a good

SCENES FROM THE STRAWBERRY AND LOBSTER ROLL FESTIVAL The weather was excellent and the turnout was high at the second annual Strawberry and Lobster Roll Festival held recently at Kensington Congregational Church. In addition to the freshly boiled lobster and strawberry shortcake, adults enjoyed live music and vendors, and children enjoyed face painting and a bouncy house. Proceeds support the church and its charitable efforts, including a youth mission trip.

‘Unsung hero’ reaches out to special needs students By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
At the annual Board of Education student achievement award meeting held in June at McGee Middle School, Garrett Kenny of Garrett’s Barber Shop presented Briana Beach, a McGee student, with the “Unsung Hero” award the barber shop sponsors each year. Kenny said he was struck by the nomination from a teacher describing how Beach quietly and without seeking recognition chose to reach out to individuals with special needs. “That really moved us,” Kenny said. “We thought that was very powerful.” Beach said, simply, that having a disability does not mean students don’t need friends. “For them not to have friends, it’s not right … It’s just a kid wanting a friend.” The award was presented
as a plaque and a $250 cash prize. Kenny said the money comes with a caveat: it cannot be saved or used responsibly, but instead should be enjoyed by buying music or going to the movies with friends. This is the second year for the award, which was first given to McKenna Evans, a McGee Middle School student who not only donated her hair but also completely shaved her head to raise awareness and more than $1,600 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support cancer research. Staff at the Farmington Avenue barber shop decided to create the award to recognize young “unsung heroes,” and sought nominations from school staff. Kenny said there are many young people in town doing great things to help others without desiring recognition, and the award seeks to honor such young Berliners.

BREWSTER , Mass. — Stuart Chapman Anson, 80, of Brewster, Mass., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, June 22, 2015. His last few days were a quick downturn following several years of decline from i n c re a s i n g COPD and advancing macular degeneration. Stu, as he was known to all, was born July 10, 1934 in Worcester, Mass., the son of the late Stuart Minton and Alice (Chapman) Anson. He is survived by his much-loved family, Deanne (Beede) Anson, his wife of nearly 59 years; a son, Douglas Anson and his wife, Amy, of Amherst, N.H.; a daughter, Amy Jo Bershaw and her husband, Alan; and three cherished grandchildren, Abigail Anson, Josh Anson, and Jayme Hupfer. Additionally, he leaves two sisters, Jean Abel and her husband, Ed; and Betty Pickering, all of Brewster, plus numerous nieces and nephews and their children. Though Stu grew up in Worcester, his heartfelt home was always the Chapman family land shared by aunts, uncles, and cousins all descended from great-grandparents who purchased their homestead and barn “up

Opinion Council Democrats are responsible stewards By Frederick Jortner As Democratic Town Committee chair, I feel the need to respond to a recent column written by Anne Reilly, head of the Republican Town Committee. Since 2004 the Democratic council has embarked on and worked in partnership with town officials, our boards and commissions and the state of Connecticut to improve our town and enhance quality of life for
all Berlin citizens. Budget constraints and economic conditions notwithstanding, every effort has been made over the years to maintain essential services, improve the town’s infrastructure and provide for the education of our children. And through this all, Democrats have remained committed to responsible management of the town budget. The result of this has been an improved bond rating and a strong financial footing for our town.
The Democratic council is committed to the future of Berlin. Responsible management of our financial resources has positioned the town favorably for ongoing and continued attention to maintaining essential services, improving and maintaining infrastructure and providing for the education of our children. Ms. Reilly seems to be implying that the town of Berlin would be better served and taxes would be lower if
we were to refuse funding from the state in the form of grants and economic assistance. The idea that we, as a town, could cut taxes, reduce spending, refuse all funding from the state and maintain essential services and provide funding for capital improvement projects is misguided and based in the shortsighted and ill-advised policies of previous Republican councils who divided the citizens and thrived on building controversy, not
consensus. The town of Berlin continues to be a desirable place to work and live. Our quality of life has improved and the town continues to prosper. In the coming months, much will be written and stated regarding where we have been, where we are and where we are going as a town. We encourage all citizens to stay informed and become engaged in the discussion of the issues which are important to the town.
The things one learns from getting your genes sequenced Once I was finished spitting into the vial, I pressed the fluid-filled cap onto the top, forcing a thin plastic membrane against a sharp edge. The reservoir of preservative fluid broke and flowed down into the vial, mixing with my saliva. I unscrewed the complicated apparatus and replaced it with a simple cap, and sealed the vial in a plastic bag. I shook it for a minute, and then put it back into the box it came in and dropped it off at the post office. A few weeks later, I called my father to ask him if he

In today’s environment, any medical advance must be considered in the context of the ads on television that could be used to sell it. “Could you have an increased risk for cancer, diabetes, or a rare disease? Order your genetic test today!” Whether consumers can handle knowing more about their genetic code is a source of much debate over the tests offered by 23AndMe, the
company I bought my test from. The company used to offer health reports on genes, but the FDA slapped that down because the test did not have proper approval for medical purposes. “23andMe must immediately discontinue marketing the (gene test) until such time as it receives FDA marketing authorization for the device,” the FDA said in a 2013 statement. Getting that authorization is a lengthy process. The tides may be changSee Kreutzkamp / Page 9
Letters to the Editor Support appreciated To the editor: The Board of Trustees of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library would like to thank our Berlin residents for the support we’ve received regarding the possible installation of an elevator in our building. We are especially pleased with the plan for two reasons: First, the elevator shaft has already been framed in the building near the front door, needing absolutely no change in the library layout; second, the intention is to install the elevator with grant monies and, if necessary, funds from one of the library’s special funds designated for renovations. While this is a town building, we are trying to get this accomplished with little or no financial support from the
town. Anticipating a very busy summer (over 1,800 children are registered in our summer reading program), we are proud that the library continues to service patrons of all ages, whether they walk in the front door, or go to our webpage and visit us electronically. Sharon Powell, Chairperson Board of Trustees Berlin-Peck Memorial Library
On schedule, and on budget To the editor: The Town Council received good news regarding the Berlin High School renovations at our last meeting. The BHS project manager re-
ported to the council that the high school renovate-as-new project is entering the third and final phase of the renovation and the project remains on schedule and on budget. Thank you to the Public Building Commission for their leadership and direction in keeping this project on track. Great job. Maggie Morelli Town Councilor

ing to East Berlin. That you for the continued support. John Luca Fred’s Deli

ing, though – in February of this year, the FDA approved a narrower test offered by 23AndMe, the very first direct-to-consumer genetic test for the rare disease, Bloom Syndrome. “The FDA believes that in many circumstances it is not necessary for consumers to go through a licensed practitioner to have direct access to their personal genetic information … (the) FDA’s intent to exempt these devices from FDA premarket review, supports innovation and will ultimately benefit consumers,” Alberto Gutierrez, Ph.D., director of the Office of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in a press release. “These tests have the potential to provide people with information about possible mutations in their genes that could be passed on to their children.” Fo r t h e t i m e b e i n g , 23AndMe can’t tell me much about how my genes impact my health – but they can give me a downloadable genome in a text file. I was able to pass this text file to a free web app offered by InterpretToMe. After agreeing to a warning that the information I discovered was “for educational and research purposes only,” I finally had what I wanted to know. Many of the results didn’t surprise me – the analysis of my genes nailed my nearsightedness, and many of the diseases that showed up as “increased risk” from my genes are things my older family members have had. I found out I have an increased risk for half a dozen stomach conditions, but I was already eating a very restricted diet for my gut, so my life didn’t turn upside-down. It could have if I learned I had a rare genetic disease like Huntington’s – all without ever speaking to a doctor. what it means. What if someone harmed themselves after such a diagnosis, when a doctor may have been able to help them understand it better? But should a doctor stand between you and information about your genes? I don’t know. The secret that makes the 23andMe genetic test affordable is that it is performed not by a human in a lab coat, but by a computer chip. If you wear glasses, give “EyeNetra” a quick web search – another company is developing a device that attaches to a smartphone to give a fast, accurate glasses prescription. Should an optician stand between you and this technology? As computers get better and better at diagnosing diseases, we’re going to have to ask ourselves what the roles of doctors should be in the new century.

More medical marijuana dispensaries coming By Ken Liebeskind The Berlin Citizen
The number of medical marijuana patients in Connecticut rose to 4,097 in June, prompting the state to solicit applications for additional dispensaries. Currently, there are dispensaries in Hartford, Branford, Bethel, South Windsor, Uncasville and Bristol. There are four licensed producers of medical marijuana in Connecticut, located in West Haven, Portland, Simsbury and Watertown. With a need for additional dispensary locations in Fairfield and New Haven counties, the state plans to issue
three new dispensary licenses this year. When Connecticut’s medical marijuana law was passed in 2012 there were 27 applications for dispensaries, according to Jonathan Harris, state commissioner of consumer protection. “We have a point-scoring system, and it takes a few months to review the applications,” he explained. “Our goal is to have selections made by the first of the year.” Twenty-three states have medical marijuana programs. “Connecticut was the first state to adopt a true pharmaceutical model for its medical marijuana program,” Harris said.
“Patients are able to purchase safe, pharmaceutical grade products from pharmacists at licensed dispensaries in the state.” The number of doctors certified to write prescriptions for medical marijuana in Connecticut also has increased – from 108 to 222 – which supports the call for additional dispensaries, Harris said. Patients with a number of debilitating conditions can register for medical marijuana. These conditions include cancer, glaucoma, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and post-traumatic See Dispensaries / Page 10

Lose weight without counting calories By Jane Grant If you think that a calorie is a calorie – and it doesn’t matter whether they come from cookies or carrots – then it’s time to rethink what you’re thinking about calories. Contrary to what you may have heard, all calories are not created equal. Believing that you’ll lose weight
simply by counting them or cutting them will likely leave you hungry, irritable, malnourished and frustrated when you end up not much lighter than you were at the start – and maybe even heavier. Check out these facts about calories for a little See Calories / Page 15

Sports Hoops clinic a huge success, once again By Nate Brown The Berlin Citizen
The Lady Redcoats basketball team held their 10th annual summer clinic at McGee Middle School last week, and the camp did not disappoint. A record 80 girls participated in the clinic, as 20 players from the high school team helped to coach and assist the young players in the program’s second year through the town parks and recreation department. “This was probably the best camp we’ve had,” BHS coach Sheila McCabe-King said. “We had a super large amount of girls, and their energy level was so high. The coaching staff and high school girls did a fantastic job teaching them fundamentals, teaching them sportsmanship, teaching them how to play hard, and it all culminated in a great championship day.” Running Monday, June 22 through Thursday, June 25 the camp worked on principles of the game such as passing and dribbling, as well as foul shots, layups and mid-range jumpers. Campers were divided by age groups for the entirety of the week: the WNBA division for the eldest participants, the AAC division for the middle school age participants, and the A-10 for the youngest group. Hannah Ciarcia and Christina Petry, who recently completed their freshman year at Berlin High, had the opportunity to work with the youngsters in the A-10 division in

As Ciarcia, Petry and other Redcoats proved, the future of Berlin basketball was most likely in the staff ’s midst during their time at McGee. “I think the excitement for us is to see the girls, to see their young faces, to see them year after year progress and enjoy the program. Berlin held its 11th annual Red-White football game Friday, June 19 at Sage Park in front of a large hometown crowd. It was the first time the 2015 Redcoats got to hit the field, show off their talents and see how well they matched up against one another. It was as hard-hitting as any regular season game, with the score deadlocked at the end of regulation, before the White team tallied a hardfought victory in overtime. After the game, coach John Capodice said, “Although it’s early and there is still a lot of work to be done, the boys looked great. This is a great group of guys who are committed to success, both junior varsity and varsity.” With the return of multiple varsity players from last year’s Class M-small division state finalist squad, and the addition of up-and-coming players from the jayvee team, there are a number of weapons for Capodice and his staff to unleash during the upcom-

grow them. Another benefit is to know where the seeds came from and to preserve our heirloom varieties. Many seeds are handed down from generation to generation, but these seeds can easily be lost forever if not shared with friends, families or the community. Seed sharing, is another part of the seed library. The seed library will be stocked by seed donations.
We are planning a kick off presentation in September where we will talk about seed saving and begin accepting seeds for the library. Best wishes for a great growing season and please save a few extra seeds for the library. The seed library is scheduled to open its doors in January of 2016. The writer is a Library Board member.

By Chris Fasciano What’s growing on at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library? A seed library! What is a seed library and how does it work you may ask? The seed library will be offering free flower, vegetable and herbs seeds to it patrons and all you will need is your library card. You just select the seeds you wish, pop them into an
envelope and bring them to the front desk to be checked out, like a book. There won’t be any late fee, but you will be encouraged to save some seeds from your harvest and return them to the library so that others may check them out the following year. It’s as simple as that. The goal of the seed library is to get seeds in the hands of people who would like to
