The Leone family knows good food. Owners and operators of St. Rita’s Bakery in Rocky Hill for some 18 years, the Leone family opened Leone’s Bakery July 13 at 259 New Britain Road, the former location of No Name Tortilla Grill. Town Manager Denise McNair is glad to see Leone’s open and said she hopes the bakery will remain in town for a long time. In addition to a full bakery menu of muffins, strudel, croissants, cannoli, cheesecake, tiramisu, Italian cookies, tarts, cakes, and more, Leone’s offers calSee Bakery / Page 5

It’s an exciting time to be Director of Economic Development in Berlin. Chris Edge has been serving in the position for some six months, filling the shoes of Jim Mahoney, who moved to Maine and still serves the town as a consultant. Edge assumed the role on the precipice of the opening of the Hartford line and renovation of the Berlin train station, which is hoped to spur transit-oriented Edge development that will transform the downtown area near Farmington Avenue. He visited The Berlin Citizen office at the Record Journal, 11 Crown St., Meriden, last week. See Edge / Page 3

like people,” Fuller said. “We do a lot of things like dinner and a play. If only five people show up, that’s fine.” For events like these and the upcoming movie night, attendees pay only for the cost of their tickets and food, and they don’t need to join the group on Meetup.com in or-
der to attend. Fuller is quick to tell new faces that the group is “a singles’ club, not a dating service.” If she is asked, for example, for another member’s phone number, she keeps that information priSee Singles / Page 2

vate – but she’s happy to pass one member’s phone number to another at their request. “If you happen to meet someone, it’s wonderful, but it’s not all about matching people up – a lot of men make man friends, and women make woman friends,” Fuller said. The group has, however, introduced some couples who are now happily married. When asked whether these couples continued to attend group events, Fuller laughed, “No, they don’t want to be around singles, they’re married!” Meetup.com is one of the reasons the group is still alive, Fuller said. The website was key in allowing the group to more easily run the organization – at one time the club had a board with officers and the primary method
of communication about upcoming events was a monthly newsletter. Not long after the secretary married the vice president, the group scaled down the complexity of its organization, and its website makes it easier to get the word out about upcoming events. “We don’t do mailings at all anymore, it’s all email … Meetup is a great site,” Fuller said. The group has scheduled a movie night at Starplex on 19 Frontage Road Friday, July 24, where those who attend will meet in the lobby at 6:30 p.m. and decide as a group what movie to see. After the movie, they will go somewhere nearby for refreshments. “It’s a good group,” Fuller said. “A lot of singles stay home on Friday night and watch TV.” For more information and upcoming events visit www. meetup.com/singles-1608/.

Edge From Page 1
“I thoroughly enjoy what I do,” Edge said, praising the town staff and elected officials for their “willingness to look at nearly anything” whether text amendments or “something that has never been done in town … it’s ‘okay, Chris, show me how it’s going to work.’” Edge said transit-oriented development is generating a lot of interest in the area around Farmington Avenue and New Britain Road near the train station. Depot Crossing is Berlin’s first mixed-use building, allowing apartments above commercial space. The new regulations allow 20 apartments per acre instead of four near the train station. “It’s very new for Berlin. Berlin does not have a lot of dense projects, but this makes sense near the train station,” Edge said. It was also great news for economic development that the recently opened Tavern on the Trax put a lot of work into the building at 845 Farmington Ave, Edge said. Edge keeps his eyes on other vacant properties in town but, following the recession, a lot of companies are still in “sit and hold mode,”
Edge said. “A lot of people are trying to see where things go.” The new economic development director finds it very gratifying to do what he can to help connect existing and prospective business owners with state and local assistance programs. The benefits of the facade improvement program can be seen at 1227 Farmington Ave., best known as the home of Subway. “The building looks great,” Edge said. Edge also helps prospective business owners navigate state licensing requirements and in some cases connects those who want to start a small businesses with organizations that can help them obtain a loan for start-up capital. The Community Investment Corporation in Hamden and the Community Economic Development Fund in Meriden are organizations that help small business owners “hang their first shingle,” by helping prospective small business owners obtain loans. “Small businesses have to start somewhere and not everyone has a rich uncle,” Edge said, and a $25,000 “micro-loan” can help make the dream of a small business a reality.

Obituaries Tyler Alan Cop
Dolores A. Symolon
E. BERLIN — Tyler Alan Cop, 15, of E. Berlin, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. Born in New Britain, a son of Richard J. Cop Jr. and Robyn (Trevethan) Cop, Tyler was a student at Berlin High School Class of 2018. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the confirmation class in East Berlin. He was an important part of a close family, and the light of his parents eyes, sharing a special friendship with his brother, sister and grandparents. He was an avid Boston Red Sox/New York Giants Fan, liked quading/ motor sports, especially Corvettes. Tyler was very athletic, playing football,
baseball and basketball, but his true love was basketball. Tyler was a big fan of Michael Jordan (he was all about the shoes). He enjoyed working with technology, especially X-Box and video games, where he liked to design and build his own controllers. He loved dinosaurs and New Jurassic World movie. He was a past member of the Berlin Little League, Berlin Youth Football and Cub Scot Pack 13. He also enjoyed vacationing at Myrtle Beach with his family. He enjoyed spending time with his close friends and his best buddy, his German shepherd, Brody. Tyler’s smile always lit up a room and had a natural ability to make people laugh. Tyler is an angel now, but will live in our hearts forever. Besides his parents, Tyler is survived by a brother, Ryan J. Cop; a sister, Rylee N. Cop, of East Berlin; maternal grandparents, Bruce
and Sharon Trevethan, of E. The Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main St., Kensington, has been entrusted with the arrangements. The family would like to thank all Tyler’s caregivers at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for their loving care and support. According to a statement from AMC Theatres, the deal should be finalized later this year after the company receives anti-trust approval. It will increase AMC’s total theaters to 380 nationwide. Starplex had 33 theaters in 12 states. In Connecticut, AMC now operates AMC Loews Plainville 20, at the Connecticut Commons center in Plainville, and AMC Loews Danbury 16. “This acquisition is expected to create immediate and long-term substantial

Opinion Letters to the Editor Petulant act To the editor: To me, the biggest issue with Scott Veley’s brief display of the Confederate battle flag and his posting it on Facebook is that it shows poor judgment and immaturity. It’s not actually out of line with the rants he sends into the paper as often as the rules allow. But this time, it was even sillier than usual. Here’s the thing: it’s not like we’re Southerners and he might be trying to defend a part of our culture by flying a flag that had been flown here for 150 years. Dude! We live in New England. We were on the other side. Even leaving out any other negative connotations that the flag might have, it
has had no part in our history or our culture. Flying it and then going, “nyeh-nyeh, look what I’m doing!” on Facebook is an act of petulance that I wouldn’t expect from anyone out of middle school. Barbara Coughlin Kensington
Stop the madness To the editor: Seems pretty silly to me that there is such an uproar over a flag. A flag to some that symbolizes racism and slavery, and to others represent the south and a heritage and way of life, unequaled. It represents two societies torn apart over a different set of standards. It is the definition of America and why we are
known to the world as the melting pot. America has grown since that time. Some for the good, some not so much. Should we ban the Battle Hymn of the Republic? Over There? The Star Spangled Banner? Where do we stop “offending” people? It seems to me that more than ever, we need leaders to stand up and demand our freedoms are not impugned. Regardless of whether you agree or not. A leader – a lover of freedom – supports freedom of speech issues and stands up regardless of the repercussions. That is the very definition of a leader. So what we should do is ban the Confederate flag, ban the star and stripes (we know
that offends the rest of the world.) While we’re at it, ban Twinkies because they suck. Should I be offended by the National Organization for the Advancement of Colored People? Are they racist? Are they prejudiced? I don’t see it that way. Maybe you do. When the Civil War ended it was a time for celebrating liberty and freedom. Your freedoms are being denied one phone call at a time. One Internet post at a time. One flag rule. One more gun law. One more tax. The flag we should all be waving is the Sons of Liberty flag, that our forefathers were so proud to display. It is a breathe of fresh air to have someone stand up and say, stop the madness.
Brian Teske Southington (The writer owns Hadfield’s Sports in Berlin.)

Honored cybersecurity expert dispenses advice By Charles Kreutzkamp
The Berlin Citizen
Quinnipiac chief information security officer Brian Kelly of Cheshire knows a thing or two about keeping information safe from hackers. Although in the movies, cybersecurity experts run to cut hard lines to main frames and battle viruses that display flashing skulls on monitors, the true day-to-day life of a
cybersecurity expert is much more dull. An average day is uneventful, but the general public usually only hears about cybersecurity when there has been a breach. “We’re winning all the time,” Kelly said, but it only takes one breach for a damaging theft of private data. “Awareness is big,” in keeping yourself safe, Kelly said. One of the most common methods to gain ac-
cess to private information is through phishing, getting users to voluntarily disclose their passwords through deception – the classic example of this is an email posing as a system administrator or popular website with a link to a false login page. Norton, the web security company, advises that users be wary of emails asking for confidential information, and never type their passwords into forms embedded
in email messages or click links in emails unless they are sure they are authentic. “These days we see some really sophisticated phishing campaigns,” Kelly said. For the average home user, Kelly said, another tip is to keep software up to date. Out of date software often has security exploits that have since been patched. Firefox, for example, recently pushed an update that temporarily disabled the Flash
plugin. “They’re taking the lead, saying we know there is vulnerability there and we’re blocking it until it has been fixed,” Kelly said. He recommends the software Secunia, which is free for home users. Secunia checks a system to alert the user if some of their software is out of date and needs to be updated. Users should also make sure they have antivirus software inSee Cybersecurity / Page 12

stalled and up to date, the expert suggested. The average person should also know that “when we make you change your password,” it’s for a good reason, Kelly said. Kelly was recently honored by being appointed to the 2015-16 Cybersecurity Canon Induction Committee. He explained that The Cybersecurity Canon, sponsored by Palo Alto Networks, seeks to help create a standard baseline of knowledge for the relatively new cybersecurity industry. Books range from technical manuals to history and even popular literature, such as “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson.
“The Cybersecurity Canon was created to identify a list of must-read books for all cybersecurity professionals,” Rick Howard, Palo Alto Networks’ chief security officer and 2015-16 Cybersecurity Induction Committee chairman, said in a statement. “These are books in which the content is timeless, genuinely represents an aspect of the community that is true and precise, reflects the highest quality and that, if not read, will leave a hole in the cybersecurity professional’s education that will make the practitioner incomplete.” Books in the canon must portray significant history or milestones, or describe technical details in ways that “do not exaggerate the craft,” ac-
cording to a press release. “The Cybersecurity Canon is a great opportunity to engage with thought leaders across industries and disciplines,” Kelly said. “It is awesome to be a part of something that gives back to the cybersecurity community and helps strengthen and develop the field.” For Kelly, the canon is the first step toward developing standards that modern systems need. He compares this generation of computers to early cars – not all of them have seat belts and airbags, and there are no crash test ratings. “We don’t have seatbelts standard. We haven’t gotten to the point yet where systems are inherently secure,” Kelly said.

Special to The Citizen
More than 1,400 runners entered the 5K race that started on East Street and proceeded down Robert Holcomb Way and Locust Street before concluding on Woodford Avenue near the GE Industrial Solutions plant. Some 250 children – under age 8 – participated in the Kids Fun Run held prior to the 5K race on Woodford Avenue. William Petit, Jr., who heads the foundation, attended the race with family members and welcomed runners with statements about the foundation’s purpose. He asked for a moment of silence for Jennifer Hawke-Hewitt and daughters Hayley and Michaela, who were killed in Cheshire and applauded foundation members for displaying kindness, idealism and activism. “It’s a beautiful thing,” he said.

I took my time and put in a move at the two-mile mark. I was running with a good pack of five to six guys,” the champ said. “It was my third time at

Luciani honing his craft in Futures League Special to The Citizen
Berlin native Taylor Luciani is improving his game less than an hour from home with the Torrington Titans of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League this summer. The rising sophomore at Quinnipiac is being used in an expanded role with the Titans — serving his team as an anchor in the rotation. His numbers thus far aren’t pretty — he’s 1-2 with a 7.32 ERA in five starts, averaging less than five innings an outing. Despite his struggles, Luciani admits he isn’t pitching with his normal approach on the mound. “Right now my stats might not look to good,” he said. “But it’s all about that learning curve. Berlin hosts 7th annual Linemen Challenge By Nate Brown The Berlin Citizen
For the seventh consecutive summer, the Redcoats of Berlin hosted football players from across the state during their annual Linemen Challenge, held this year at Sage Park. Based on the turnout, one would think this event has been around for ages.
YEARS 2528 Years
Forty-five teams from 36 Connecticut schools competed in various challenges on Saturday, July 18 geared towards those unsung heroes who usually get little recognition. Darien took home top honors on this day. Southington 1, one of two Blue Knight teams competing, finished second
rotation. None of the Bobcats’ starters graduated this past spring so he understands it won’t be easy, but he is up for the challenge. “Definitely,” he said. “I’m hoping with the work I put in here, freshman year and in the fall, I can earn a spot by working hard.” Looking down the road, Luciani – who grew up as a Red Sox fan – ultimately hopes he can extend his career past college and into the professional realm. “It’s always the dream,” he said. “But I’ve got a long way to go.”

Four state runners-ups from 2014 also took part in the competition: Berlin, Darien, Ledyard and North Branford. “The biggest thing that you want to get out of this is that your guys competed, and I think, especially my guys, they did,” Maloney coach Kyle Frederick said. “The big thing I’ve learned as a young coach is that you’re not going to win without linemen. The championships will come when you have great linemen, and that’s the message we’re trying to send to our guys is that it starts with them.” Along with Southington and Berlin, Maloney was one of the schools to bring two competing squads. Wilcox Tech and North Haven were among the few that had multiple teams.

Started seven years ago, the Linemen Challenge is used to help prepare offensive linemen for the approaching season by putting statistics next to the players’ and teams’ names, something they don’t see on game nights. Currently, the Challenge consists of eight events that teams take part in throughout the competition – bench press, agility course, crab sled relay, heavy bag relay, Move the Mountain, one-man sled relay, tire flip relay and a truck push – before squaring off against one another in a tournament style tug-of-war. “It’s the best turnout we’ve ever had,” said Berlin’s offensive line coach and Challenge mastermind John Paul Demko. “Moving it to Sage Park (because of the Berlin High School renovations) has been a blessing in disguise. “We’ve got two teams here and to have the younger kids here to see what the Dariens of the world, the Southingtons of the world are doing, it gives them a chance to say ‘this is where I want to be in two years,’” Demko said. Apart from giving coaches an early look at how their individual players have improved in the offseason, the event also allowed coaches to catch a glimpse of their competition for the fall. “It’s good motivation for the linemen where they can say, ‘We may be the strongest kids in Berlin, but there could be eight or nine kids in the state that did more than you or are faster than you,’” Demko said. “So it gives them a little motivation in the middle of the summer so they’ll work a little bit harder to get to that ultimate goal in December.” Both Berlin teams fared well throughout the competition. Berlin 1 finished with an impressive 1:25 in the oneman sled relay and completed 47 reps on the bench press. They also finished in 10 seconds flat on the truck push. Berlin 2 bested their own teammates in the agility drill. They also had impressive performances in the crab sled relay and the one-man sled relay. “As a line, you need that chemistry. You need to be friends with each other, you need to be able to talk to each other, you need to be able to motivate each other in case someone lets up a sack on a play; you need to be able to pick that guy up and help each other out,” Demko said. “So it’s definitely a good team building experience and it definitely gives the kids a good barometer.”

One of those stretches was Kensington Road, from Kensington to East Street in Southington. “Roads are a little more dangerous, you have to be aware of traffic,” Lalla said about the road course, compared to mountain biking competitions. “This one’s in its infancy,” said Lalla, who rode in the 50-miler last year. “It’s a great group of people.” Hanscom was looking for a group of cyclists to train with three years ago when he was preparing for a 50-mile
mountain bike race in southern Vermont with a 9,200 foot climb at Mount Ascutney. “I wanted to get a group together to train,” Hanscom said. “We all mountain bike together.” Bruce Vagts, membership director of the Southington Lions Club, said the organization latched on to the bike race concept. “We’re always looking for new ways to raise money,” Vagts said. The bike race aligns a new affinity group with the organization, which through the years held golf tournaments, and at a time when 5K road races attracting runners is a popular fundraiser.
