Facebook post sparks calls for resignation By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
A now deleted Facebook post has resulted in some calling for former Deputy Mayor Scott Veley to resign from the Republican State Central Committee.
Veley’s Facebook page contains many political posts but appears to be a personal page, not an official platform. In the deleted post, it was reported, Veley wrote, “I will not give into this politically correct absurdity — flying the stars and bars today in protest.” Accompanying the post was an image of Veley’s Kensington home with the Confederate battle flag flying alongside the American flag. Hearst Connecticut Media ob-
tained a screenshot of the post, which had 81 Facebook “likes” when the image was captured. Prominent state Republican Joe Visconti told Hearst Media he had spoken to Veley, and the flag had been taken down after being displayed for two hours on June 25. The story was reported by several media outlets, none of which had reached Veley for comment. The Citizen asked Veley for comment by email July 1 and did not hear
back. Several Republican and Democratic politicians have called for Veley to resign from the Republican State Central Committee. Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano, a Republican who represents North Haven and Durham, issued a statement, saying, “One hundred-fifty years after the end of the Civil War, the confederate flag still represents slavery, still rep-

SUMMER READING KICKOFF Hundreds attended the annual summer reading kick-off event at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. The superhero-themed event featured face painting, police vehicles, and a bouncy house. “We had a great turnout,” said Head of Children’s and Teen’s Services Jennifer Needham. The summer reading program has divisions for adults (titled “Escape the ordinary”), teens (“Unmask”) and children (“Every hero has a story.”) Those who participate are challenged to meet reading goals and are eligible for prizes such as entries in gift basket drawings, coupons for free ice cream, movie tickets, video games, gift cards, and more. An “amazing” Newington woman has been crowned Miss Amazing Connecticut Junior Miss. Victoria Maldonado, 20, visited Irving gas station in Berlin on the turnpike June 27 to share her story and to raise funds for her travel expenses to the Miss Amazing nationals in Los Angeles. The young woman is also an accomplished Special Olympics athlete. When asked how it felt to win the title, Maldonado told The Citizen, “It feels, well, amazing. I can’t even put it into words for you.” The Miss Amazing Con| Photos by Jennifer Needham

resents the bloody war fought in defense of slavery, still represents prejudice and oppression.” Although Fasano said Veley “has a constitutional right to freedom of speech,” he said the flag is “a reflection of bigotry, divisiveness and hate” that does not represent Republicans. “This action by someone in Mr. Veley’s position is unacceptable. I join with others in condemning in the strongest of terms the display of the Confederate flag. I also strongly urge Mr. Veley to resign from his position with the state party,” Fasano said. As Hearst Media reported, Connecticut NAACP president Scot Esdaile said that the NAACP would not “tolerate this,” when participating in a conference call organized by Connecticut Democrats that included some reporters. Esdaile reportedly said the NAACP was prepared to organize a march in front of Veley’s home if the flag was not taken down. After the incident, Veley changed his Facebook profile picture twice, once to an image with the words “going dark,” and another to a picture of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. He has not posted any public statements about the controversy. Some took to Facebook to express support for Veley. One commented, “Don’t you go anywhere - You stand your ground my friend. Summer road repair underway
Maldonado
Public Works continues to repave town roads that are in bad shape, with construction getting underway last week on Savage Hill Road and Middletown Road. “With those two streets the majority of the work is a reconstruction, with the pavement pulverized so that new pavement can be laid, Deputy Director of Public Works Jim Horbal explained. Horbal said that some of the roads that are being repaired were built in the ’80s. Horbal said that Public Works tries to limit the amount of traffic on roads undergoing work, but that the

necticut Junior Miss pageant includes an interview as well as a talent portion where entrants perform an act, sing, or dance. Maldonado performed a three-minute dance routine. Incredibly, she entered the pageant at the last minute. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am for the support from local and regional people who had the pleasure of meeting such a special woman,â€? said Maldonado’s father, Jerry Maldonado. “On several occasions Victoria wiped (away) tears of joy and said she will never forget the kind words told to her.â€? The Miss Amazing pageant seeks to give girls and women with disabilities “the opportunity to reach their full potential ‌ in an atmosphere built around encouragement and support,â€? according to their website. “We believe the Miss Amazing pageant can bring the community together and encourage further inclusion for individuals with special needs.â€? “I am so proud of you. You have worked hard your whole life to fit in and overcome all the things that have been hard for you,â€? Thomasina Nicholson, Victoria Maldonado’s mother, posted on the GoFundMe page dedicated to helping the young woman raise the $5,000 needed for the trip to L.A. At press time, 14 people had contributed nearly $1,000 at www.gofundme.com/t5dbf68.

The last day of school arrived on June 17 at St. Dominic Elementary School in Southington. A farewell gathering of parents, teachers and students represented more than the occasion of 125 students starting summer break. Teachers, parents and students were leaving St. Dominic School for the last time. Their school was closing in a consolidation with the town’s St. Thomas School as a new pre-K to eighth grade community Catholic school named “Southington Catholic.” See School / Page 9

Nick Melo, pastor of St. Thomas, has been done by the two principals, working with a steering committee comprised of members representing each of the schools with support from the Archdiocese of Hartford’s Office of Catholic Schools. “Our outlook is positive,” Melo said. He explained that between an open house and continuing inquiries of families, questions and concerns of parents have been addressed. “More are considering the fact of the fine quality Catholic education each of the schools which will continue at the new school. Also, students and teachers will have the benefit of ongoing relationships from their respective schools and the added opportunity to forge new bonds.” Applications continue to come in, Melo said, with as many as four to five in a week. “We’ll be ready to go on day one,” he said.

The closing of St. Dominic after 30-plus years was a visibly emotional event. The final dismissal was met with mixed moods. Parting sadness, wondering anxiety, attempts to be positive, tearful good-byes as well as reminiscing about positive memories of the school’s past. St. Dominic School Principal Patricia M. Tiezzi said, “Change is not easy. Parents are disappointed at having been made to consider other options in as vitally important a decision as the next step in their child’s education.” According to Tiezzi, at this time, 46 students will continue in Catholic schools. school, St. Dominic has received many awards for excellence including a 2012 designation as a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. As to the basic reasons for closing the school, St. Dominic pastor Rev. Ronald May said, “Both St. Thomas and St. Dominic schools have had declining enrollments. Maintaining both Catholic schools was unsustainable. The two schools will operate as one pre-K through 8th grade school at the site of the former St. Thomas School.” Southington Catholic principal, Mary Pat Wirkus, formerly of St. Thomas School, said enrollments are moving along with 132 signed up. “Work is being done to prepare the new school for opening, including moving equipment and furniture from St. Dominic School in late July,” she said. The new school model offers students programs and activities that include computer technology upgrades, an improved Robotics Club and Math Counts. 4. Of the 49 chemicals that have been tested, 10 (20 percent) are probable carcinogens. 5. Of the 49 chemicals that have been tested, 19 (40 percent) are irritants. Specifically, of the 40 percent of the chemicals that have been tested and are known to be irritants: 1. 12 (24 percent) are respiratory irritants; some causing asthma symptoms. 2. 18 (37 percent) can cause skin irritations. 3. 13 (27 percent) can cause eye irritations. Chemicals are usually assessed for their toxicity one chemical at a time. Synergistic affects of being exposed to numerous chemicals at the same time is not known. From the data of this new study, it is reasonable to assume that persons playing on synthetic turf fields with rubber tire infill or toddler playgrounds surfaced with rubber tire mulch are being exposed concurrently to multiple chemicals. This study did not analyze for carbon black that makes up to 30 percent of each tire, nor did it analyze the carbon black nanoparticles or the nanotubes that are now used in the manufacture of tires. These three additional substances add to the toxicity of the shredded rubber tires that our toddlers, children, students and athletes are playing on. Memories of Berlin’s ‘good ol’ days’ to be shared By Lorraine Stub
Ask any longtime resident of Berlin what he or she feels nostalgia for, and the most frequent response is family farms. Not long ago, cows were grazing, and rows of vegetables grew around every bend. Almost everyone tended a garden, and many sold their produce at roadside stands. Residents of Berlin and surrounding towns are invited to share their stories of the Berlin farms, orchards, dairies, roadside stands and local dairy bars they have cherished, as the Berlin Historical Society presents another “Story Share,” a series of group oral history sessions celebrating the neighborhoods, industries and communities that characterized Berlin’s past, on Wednesday, July 15, 1 to 3 p.m. Held at the Berlin Senior Center, 33 Colonial Drive, Kensington, the free event will comprise a slide show of old photos especially selected to trigger memories, and audience participation. Newcomers are encouraged to attend, as the afternoon will offer insight into the town’s fascinating character and history. Attendees are asked to register by calling (860) 828-7006 by Tuesday, July 14. Participants are encouraged to bring old photos to be shared and town will be published. Send letters to news@ scanned at the event. Despite all the land lost to theberlincitizen.com or The Berlin Citizen, P.O. towns for the amount of former farmland preserved for passive recreation. Ironically, new residents are drawn to Berlin for its rural scenery, but lack context for what this town looked like 50 years ago, when it was truly rural. Pockets of agricultural enterprise survive on a small scale, drawing people here to pick blueberries, cut down Christmas trees or visit one of the remaining farm stands. Perhaps with the west coast in long-term drought, and growing sentiment for locally produced food, we will see more farming here in the future. Recent public hearings indicate a desire for flocks of chickens and cattle on smaller parcels. Until recently, Berlin was known as an agricultural town, and the enduring symbol of that is the annual Berlin Fair. Before the Lions Club sponsored a fair, the site of the annual State Agricultural Fair was on Farmington Avenue just south of Burnham Street. Other reminders of Berlin’s farming past are the weathered barns and overgrown fields of the current landscape. In a 2011 statewide survey of barns still standing, the number submitted by Berlin volunteers was a great surprise to the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. Here in the center of the state, close to urban cities, is a great concentration See Stub / Page 11

Annecchino gave a presentation to Coginchaug students on distracted driving and said it was “one of the more rewarding things I’ve done in a long time. These kids were attentive, they participated, they were really thoughtful.” Annecchino felt compelled to do something to attempt to curb distracted driving after
seeing so many cases in his line of work of individuals harmed by it. The CDC states: “Each day in the United States, more than nine people are killed
and more than 1,153 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.” See Driving / Page 14

“We tend to think of it as more of a teen problem,” Annecchino said, and that is true to some degree. According to research collected by the CDC, inexperienced drivers under the age of 20 have the highest proportion of distracted driving fatalities and “nearly half ” of high school students copped to texting or emailing while driving, compared to 31 percent of drivers age 18 to 64. However, the lawyer said that giving the presentation made him realize that “we as adults often don’t do a good job with this.” While most people think of distracted driving as texting – a ticketable offence – fewer consider that some legal behaviors also can cause impairment. Annecchino said that a study showed talking on a hands-free cell phone can still cause impairment to reaction time, equivalent to a blood alcohol content of .08. Other behaviors, such as eating while driving, can also prove to be a dangerous distraction, he said. The CDC reports that 69 percent of drivers 18 to 64 talk on their cell phone while driving. In 2011, nearly one in five crashes that caused an injury were related to distracted driving. “We have been trying to hit them with every oppor-
tunity we get to discuss distracted driving,” BHS school resource officer Steve Kostka said. “It all starts when they ask for their parking permit from school security.” Berlin students seeking the ability to drive to school are given a talk about distracted driving in addition to the annual programs the school offers, including the “Prom Promise” in the spring, which involves a re-enactment of a car crash. The school had a similar event in the fall. “I think the key with students is to hit them multiple times with the information,” Kostka said. “Distracted driving is incredibly dangerous for experienced drivers, but presents an even greater concern for those just learning to drive,” said Cheshire High principal Jeff Solan. CHS also strives to expose teens to information on distracted driving frequently with assemblies, health classes, and emails to the homes of juniors and seniors. Solan pointed out that the Cheshire Police Department was recently awarded a grant to step up distracted driving enforcement laws. “To their credit, they contacted us in advance so that we could notify our students and parents,” Solan said. “After all, the goal is to prevent the incidents of distracted driving amongst all of our students.”

Sports Berlin struggles with Middletown Post 68 now a game behind Cheshire
American Legion
By Jim Bransfield Special to The Citizen
BERLIN — For the Berlin American Legion team it was another weekend of frustration with blankety-blank Middletown. “We could be going to the World Series and still Middletown would beat us,” said Berlin coach Rob Manzo, after Middletown rallied late in the second game of Sunday’s double header to win 4-2, earn a split on the day, and take the season series from Manzo’s club, two games to one. “They’ve had our number in recent years,” said Manzo. In fact, the year Berlin won the state and regional championship and went to the World Series, Berlin lost two of three to Middletown. Middletown coach Tim D’Aquila and Manzo are old friends. They coached together at Wesleyan Uni-
versity and like nothing better than beating each other. “Rob doesn’t like losing to me and I don’t like losing to him,” said D’Aquila before the series began Saturday. The Saturday game was the annual Norm Way Memorial game at Palmer Field in Middletown. Way, a World War II veteran who was a mover and shaker with Middletown Post 75 up until his passing, is honored every year, usually on July 4. Oftentimes the opponent is Berlin and oftentimes, Middletown wins. Berlin came into the weekend series at 11-1 and leading Zone 3 by a game over defending champ Cheshire. When the weekend ended, Berlin – which began a crucial series Tuesday, after press time, with Cheshire at Sage Park – trailed by a game. Middletown, a young team but standing firm at 12-6, has been playing

the seventh. In the second game, Berlin took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning behind Matt Vernacatola, who was making his first start. But after giving up his second hit, a leadoff single to Nick DeShais in the sixth, Manzo took him out in favor of Zach Veleas, who had a rough outing. He gave up four hits, walked a batter and was charged with three of Middletown’s four runs. “We ran out of pitching a little bit,” said Manzo. “It was Vernacatola’s first start and he pitched very well.” Berlin, 12-3 in the zone and 17-6 overall going into the Cheshire series, has a challenging end-of-season schedule. After the three games with Cheshire, Manzo’s club has three games with Madison and three with a strong Wallingford club before the state playoffs begin on Saturday, July 18. “I don’t know if we will win the zone,” said Manzo. “But we will be in the tournament and we hope to make a run.”

better than expected and in the Saturday game, played in front of more than 200 spectators, Middletown won 4-1 behind its ace, Scott Marks. Marks gave up 10 hits. But he was brilliant in the clutch, getting out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the fifth and giving up just one run in a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth. Andrew Charbonneau pitched for Berlin and had just one bad inning, but it was enough to cause him to lose the game. Middletown scored all four of its runs in the third, two scoring on wild pitches. In the other five innings Charbonneau allowed just one hit and gave up only four on the day. In Sunday’s double header, Kyle Wollman pitched the 4-1 Berlin win in the opener. He had only one 1-2-3 inning, but like Marks the day before, he was tough in the clutch, stranding eight Middletown runners. He was helped by two outstanding catches in the outfield, one by Nick Naples in right in the first and the other by Evan Michalek in center leading off

Sports Commentary: The next wave Yet the inquisitive thought can also be pondered on a larger scale, as well. Time and again, our attention is drawn to the future and what it holds for us, as individuals, as a society, and, most definitely, as sports fans. In light of the United States national women’s soccer team taking home the nation’s third World Cup championship with Sunday’s 5-2 victory over Japan, it definitely has me won-
“Who’s got next?” It’s a question posed at parks across the country. When an individual or makeshift team finishes off an opponent, they’re quick to look for their next foes. From pickup basketball or king-of-the-hill tennis matches, the phrase holds true: whoever wins stays as newcomers must rise up to challenge those before them.

dering who is next. But the “next” I’m referring to isn’t in regards to the team’s next opponent. No, I’m wondering where the next round of national players will come from. You see, it’s been quite the layoff for USWNT in regards to international success. Don’t get me wrong; the American ladies have seemingly flattened every opponent during the Summer Olympics. They’ve captured gold during three consecutive Olympic Games, and in four of the last five. Yet for the Holy Grail of international soccer competition, the FIFA World Cup, before their recent triumph, the United States hadn’t hosted a trophy since 1999. For some, the 16-year layoff may seem like a lifetime. For me, I think it’s the perfect
