Local robotics teams nab awards By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
Two robotics teams with local flavor took home awards from the FIRST Recycle Rush competition held in Waterbury Feb. 28 and March 1. To play Recycle Rush, each team must build a robot and then form an alliance with two other teams,
so that each alliance has three teams and three robots. Red and blue sides compete to stack totes on scoring platforms, and both alliances can earn “coopertition” points by collaborating to stack yellow totes in the center of the field. Robots have to carry objects without being derailed by pool noodles, referred to
as “litter,” thrown by the other team. Teams play many twoand-a-half-minute matches and are ranked by total scores. The Techno-Nuts, a team drawn from Berlin High School and McGee Middle School, took home the Industrial Safety Award See Robotics / Page 3

The Techno-Nuts achieved a rank of 28 out of the 74 teams participating in the competition, making it to the semifinal match. The Xavier High School Fullmetal Falcons, a team with Berlin members, received the Entrepreneurship Award, which commends a team on organization and fundraising. “Our team worked for months creating a system that would be able to help organize our team, but also provide a way for members to have an impact on every part of the team,” said the team’s Head of Business, student Keven Iott of North Haven. Iott was pleased to see the Fullmetal Falcons’ efforts recognized with an award. “The Entrepreneurship Award is an award that focuses on the business-run aspects of a robotics team,” said Alec Guzauckas of Kensington, the team’s Hardware Hero. cently obtained a 3D printer as a result of an essay-writing contest. The Falcons reached the final match at the Recycle Rush. Both the Falcons and the Techno-Nuts developed robots with the ability to strafe sideways for the competition. The Techno-Nuts’ “drive system uses several programmable sensors to give feedback to the driver’s station, giving location and point of reference throughout the match,” helping the robot “navigate the field in a very effective way,” Griswold said. Said Falcon team captain Van Augur: “I think our success in winning the entrepreneurial award and making it to the finals are much more closely linked then one would think. The well-organized business plan that won our team the award is also reflected in how we organized building our robot this year.” “This competition was amazing for the guys,” added the team’s other captain, Jameson Kief of Southington. The Falcons “are on the edge of our seats” preparing for another competition March 28 at Hartford Public High School, Kief said. The Techno-Nuts are headed to a competition at UMass Dartmouth March

Police land grant for DUI checkpoint By Charles Kreutzkamp
The Berlin Police Department will operate a DUI Sobriety Checkpoint Thursday, March 12 thanks to a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation awarded to the department. Deputy Chief John Klett said that Berlin’s DUI checkpoints were used as an example of a model checkpoint setup for highway safety personnel last year. The DOT grants are “competitive to the extent that you have to have a proven track record,” Klett said. The grant provides 75 percent reimbursement of overtime costs related to running the checkpoints, which will run through Labor Day 2015. “Roadside sobriety checkpoints have

been shown to be the most effective method to detect and apprehend under the influence drivers,” police said in a press release. Additional DUI patrols will be conducted Wednesday through Saturday nights on selected dates and times during the coming year. Patrols target intoxicated drivers, but also enforce other laws. “The purpose of these patrols and checkpoints is to reduce accidents and injuries related to DUI drivers and help provide safe travel,” police said. The March 12 checkpoint will be operated on the Berlin Turnpike near Middletown Road. Police are required by law to announce to the press the date and location of DUI checkpoints in advance, Klett explained.

Bonnie Lee Coté-Masselle BERLIN — It is with profound sadness that the Coté Family announces the loss of our beloved sister, Bonnie Lee Coté-Masselle, Sunday, March 1, 2015, at the age of 66, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on Good Friday of a Leap Year, March 26, 1948, an alignment of days that will never occur again, she was the first child of the late Alfred J.
Obituaries
Coté and the late Betsy I. (McQueeney) Coté. A lifelong Berlin resident she attended local schools and was a graduate of St Thomas Aquinas High school. A beautiful, sweet and industrious young woman, she was the first employee of the Abel Coil Company from which she retired after more than 30 years. She also worked as a sales clerk at the original Deeter’s Bake Shoppe and at Berlin Pharmacy. A generous soul, she loved to indulge her parents and four younger siblings with many wonderful gifts. Later in life she worked for and annoyed daily her brother at “Chris Coté’s Intermission.”
Bonnie is survived by her son, who was the joy of her life, Francis Paul Masselle, Jr., of Plainville; two brothers, Christopher M. Coté and his wife, Patricia (Kelly,) of Berlin, with whom she made her home, Robin W. Coté and his wife, Paula (Zappone,) of Wethersfield; a sister, Nancy C. Tierinni, of East Hartford; her aunt and Godmother, Lorraine T. Coté, of New Britain; seven nephews; one niece; two great-nephews; two great-nieces; and many, many cousins who will all miss her dearly. Her beautiful smile, endless generosity to her family and friends, and her optimistic view of life through sick-
ness, sadness, struggle and strife should be a lesson to us all that one single person can make the world a better place. A memorial service was held Saturday, March 7, at Kensington United Methodist Church, 103 Hotchkiss St., Kensington. In lieu of flowers the family requests that Memorial Donations be made in Bonnie’s Memory to: Channel 3 Kids Camp, c/o Denise Hornbecker, 73 Times Farm Road, Andover, CT 06232. Opinion
Wanted: Memories of a bygone age By Lorraine Stub Remember when the Main Street Kensington area was bustling with home grown businesses? Within walking distance we had it all – independent groceries, shoe stores, restaurants and diners, an appliance store, a drug store with a real soda fountain, upholstery, fabric and clothing shops, a 5 & 10, bakeries, furniture and soft serve ice cream. Neighborhood kids walked from Kensington Grammar School to the old Peck Library, often stopping for ice cream at Dairy Delight or candy at Fagan’s, sharing it with friends while perched on the retaining wall
overlooking Peck and Main streets. For anyone over age 50, a walk down Main Street brings fond memories of a time and place where everyone knew your name. The idea for sharing stories of the downtown Kensington area evolved after the public hearings for the Kensington Grammar School development project. Residents made it clear they deeply care about the neighborhood and its history. The Historical Society hosted a “Remember KGS” event in October, and many of us still mourn the loss of that building and its See Memories / Page 9

Letters to the Editor Logical solution To the editor: I have read recent articles regarding the problems facing our mail carriers. I have lived in Berlin for nearly 39 years. When we first moved here, our mail was delivered by 1 p.m. every day. Since then it has gotten progressively later, sometimes not arriving until 6 p.m. All due to the walking routes. Driving around town I notice some driveways are very long and very steep and the mail carriers are expected to

climb through snow banks and tread on very icy surfaces. How absurd. If people have their newspaper boxes on the street, and garbage pails are picked up at the street, then why not make it so the mailboxes are also at the street. Then we wouldn’t even have an issue as to the safety of our mail carriers. It seems a very logical solution. What do you think? Rosemary Rossano Berlin

Roof replacement at Griswold moves forward By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
A fairly mellow meeting of the Berlin Town Council was held March 3 with only one nay vote cast against any agenda item. Councilor David Evans voted against waiving Rule 7 following a public hearing where no resident spoke concerning the roof replacement at Mary E. Griswold Elementary School. Evans said he was consistently opposed to any waiving of Rule 7, which allows the council to immediately act upon a proposal following the public hearing, suspending the waiting period otherwise required by the town charter. Town officials explained that waiving Rule 7 was proposed to allow the project to be completed this summer in order to ensure that the town received state reimbursement for the project at the current rates. The other five council members present, including both of Evans’ fellow Republicans, voted in favor of waiving the rule. After the rule was waived, Evans then voted in favor of the roof replacement as part of a unanimous vote. The council also unanimously approved a tax abatement for Cedar Brickyard LLC for a ren-
ovation project following the town’s tax abatement policy guidelines. “I feel very strongly that we should encourage this type of business investment, and we have done it for other developers, so we should remain consistent,” said Councilor Charles Paonessa. Deputy Mayor William Rasmussen said that the tax abatement policy has been “well received.” The council also unanimously approved a new contract for medical billing services that will save the town money at a new rate of 5percent. Evans said the rate was favorable based on his research. The council approved the purchase of a new Ford Focus following the totaling of a town vehicle in an accident in which the other driver was found to be at fault, according to Town Manager Denise McNair. No one was seriously hurt, McNair said. The council also approved a promotional rate for Timberlin Golf Course to offer at the Connecticut Golf Show, and budget transfers needed by the police department to reroute funds due to turnover at the department, as well as officers out on workers’ compensation.

Adventurer nears midpoint in epic trek By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
While his family in Berlin faces a seemingly never ending winter, recent college graduate Brian Ford battles 90-degree heat in Vietnam and Cambodia on his “Trek for Education.” Ford, over one month and 675 miles into his 1,500mile journey across Southeast Asia, has raised $17,500 of a $20,000 goal to support the Australia-based charity, The International Brothers and Sisters House. The charity combats poverty in Southeast Asia by helping orphans make their way through university, among other initiatives. IBSH director Josh Porteous, who Ford met while volunteering in Tanzania, joined Ford for the first week of the journey. Australian volunteer Meg Polkinghorne joined Ford for most of the first month of the journey. Polkinghorne also came to know Ford and Porteous in Tanzania. “The three of us got along really well,” she said.
Brian Ford, center, with fellow travelers Meg Polkinghorne and Josh Porteous. Polkinghorne is back in Australia, but had an “incredible experience” walking along the “beautiful countryside, and every day it was a different terrain – beaches, green mountains, dirt roads, rice fields, sand dunes and dusty highways.” “One of our daily struggles is food,” said Ford, who has been surviving mainly on rice, eggs, bananas and coconuts.
Street vendors keep meats unrefrigerated in the 90-degree heat. “Just the other day we bought what we thought were six hard-boiled eggs, only to crack them open and see cooked chicken fetuses inside.” Ford has tried other exotic local foods, including fried insects. He said crickSee Trek / Page 10

more a manufactured idea of what a town should look like. What would be more true to our longings would be to restore what remains. We gaze at old photos with a sense of pride in our past, so why not preserve the real thing? Where restored historic buildings predominate, town centers thrive. In an effort to engage townspeople in a dialog about the vibrant neighborhoods and communities that were a part of town history, The Berlin Historical Society is sponsoring a series of story sharing events to gather memories of what we had, and perhaps in doing so, influence what we can revive now. One goal for the first ses-
sion is to map a list of businesses people remember. We look upon history not as a tiresome list of dates and events, but as the collective stories of what each generation remembers and passes on. History is the sharing of personal stories of daily life, hardships and celebrations, humor, local characters, innovators and landscape. Most of all it is about the people who, over time, have called this place home. Sharing local history reinforces our sense of connection to each other and our longing to preserve the best of what we have. Upcoming sessions will bring us together to view photos and swap stories about the East Berlin, Worth-
ington Ridge and South Kensington neighborhoods. We also want to celebrate Berlin farms, immigrant communities, trains and Memorial Pool. The topics are endless. If you have memories to share, or if you just want to listen and absorb, join us at the Berlin Senior Center, 33 Colonial Drive, Kensington on Wednesday, March 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. for our first session. If you have old pictures or memorabilia, we can scan them at the event. For registration, call the Senior Center at (860) 828-7006. For all other information, the museum phone is (860) 828-5114. The writer is Secretary of the Berlin Historical Society.

ets taste kind of like shrimp. In Cambodia, where regular eggs are hard to find, Ford has “come to the point where” he risks eating some chicken and beef regularly. Polkinghorne explained, “We would splurge when we got to a big city like Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh, eating burgers and enjoying the break.” She said the first week of the
trek was the hardest. “We had to throw out a lot of possessions, as our backpacks were too heavy to carry.” One of the highlights of the trip so far has been meeting children at a child rescue center where IBSH will be sponsoring some of the kids through university. “There are about 30 kids, all incredible, with big hearts,” said Ford, who spent some time with teenagers Liday and Phanna, both of whom will

be sponsored by IBSH. “Both these teenagers are incredible kids at the top of their class at the local high school.” Ford said many of the children at the rescue center come from terrible situations. Along the way, the locals have been “insanely friendly,” Ford said. Once, the travelers started setting up tents after dark before realizing they were in someone’s front yard. They asked the homeowners, who didn’t speak English, for permission to stay, with gestures, and were welcomed. “Next thing we knew the entire street was outside laughing and watching us set up our tents,” with local kids even assisting in the task. Polkinghorne and Ford agree the trip feels very safe; the main source of fear being the risk of heat exhaustion, the dogs (“tenacious little guys, mostly just territorial,” said Ford) and poisonous snakes. The adventurers were off the beaten path for one 15-mile stretch, walking along farm paths, “a situation we should probably try to avoid at all costs in the future,” Ford said. Polkinghorn said Ford is “very determined and passionate about finishing his journey, and I was lucky to share it with him.” For more information about the “Trek for Education,” or to donate, visit www.trekforeducation.com.

There are several deep dents in the front and sides, scratches all over the front and a locking bar is now bent and doesn’t work, Perry said. A Facebook page titled “AJ Dumpster Demolition Services” was created over the weekend. The video of the incident was linked to the page with the caption “See our professionals in action in this thrilling video. Our vision of an HQ free world is what drives us to excel daily.” Klett said once the officer has all the information he will determine if there’s enough probable cause to seek an arrest warrant.

Police are investigating after a driver for AJ’s Waste Removal was caught on video ramming a competitor’s dumpster. Jack Perry, co-owner of HQ Dumpsters and Recycling of Southington, said the incident happened in Berlin recently. The customer called HQ Dumpsters and signed up for service, then called AJ’s Waste Removal of Cheshire to cancel service, Perry said. A driver for AJ’s went to the location Feb. 24 to remove the AJ’s dumpster, according to Perry. A video provided to Perry by the customer shows a truck with an AJ’s Waste Removal logo picking up a bright green dumpster and using it to ram a dark green dumpster three times, then leaving the parking lot. A.J. Wallinger, owner of AJ’s Waste Removal, did not return calls. Berlin Deputy Chief John Klett said police are investigating a Feb. 24 incident involving AJ’s and HQ. Klett said the officer investigating is gathering more information, including a
video and a damage estimate. Perry said the incident is an example of “bullying.” He said there’s a history of “intimidation” by AJ’s Waste Removal toward HQ Dumpsters. “We tell kids in school they shouldn’t bully,” Perry said. “Here is a an adult doing something firsthand to people’s property. Things like this shouldn’t be going on in this day and age.” Perry said there has been an outpouring of support for HQ Dumpsters since the video was posted online. The dumpster that was struck was brand new, and is still usable but with noticeable damage, Perry said.
