Students at McGee Middle School refuse to grow up – at least until after they perform Disney’s “Peter Pan Jr.,” a stage play adaptation for youngsters. Sixty-five grade 6-8 students have been hard at work rehearsing since January. “I love Wendy because she’s really independent,” said Katie Rochette when asked about her role. Wendy “really knows herself,” and isn’t the sort of girl who sits around “timid, needing to be rescued.” “I always liked Tinker Bell, ever since I was younger,” Danyella Kaplan said. “She’s really sassy.” Danyella, who will portray the iconic fairy, has participated in theater for three years. “I just love acting.” Nathaniel Hansen plays Captain Hook. A veteran of theater roles, including the Dodo bird in Alice and Wonderland, and salt and pepper shakers in Beauty and the Beast, this is Nathaniel’s biggest part to play yet. Dawson Trotman truly enjoys his role as Peter Pan, who is “really con-
The council voted unanimously on a game-changer for this year’s budget referendum: voters will have a chance to advise the council, through a non-binding advisory question, whether they feel the budget is too high or too low in a second question on the ballot. The council put the budget forward, with bipartisan agreement, signaling it was ready to be presented to the town at the annual budget meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 8 at the McGee Middle School auditorium. Locals weigh in on ‘Aid in Dying’ bill The Berlin Citizen
Local residents swarmed the Connecticut Legislature with testimony for a March 18 public hearing on a house bill, “An Act Concerning Aid in Dying for Terminally Ill Patients.” The law would allow mentally competent adults who receive a terminal diagnosis that will end their life within six months to be prescribed, and to self-administer, medication that will end their lives. Two doctors
must determine that the patient is terminal, psychologically competent, and acting of their own volition. Patients must make two written requests at least 15 days apart to a doctor. Two witnesses who may not have any family or financial relationship with the patient and must attest the patient is of sound mind, and making the decision of their own volition. Doctors can halt the process if they believe the patient to be suffering from depression. Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen told law-
makers the proposed law is based on Oregon’s 1994 Death With Dignity Act. Jepsen noted that only 59 percent of those who receive life-ending prescriptions in Oregon take them and that of the 859 patients who ended their lives with prescribed medication, 90 percent were enrolled in hospice and their median age was 71. For Jepsen, the Aid in Dying bill “is about giving more options … I believe it is wrong to compel a competent indiSee Aid / Page 2
