Students at McGee Middle School refuse to grow up – at least until after they perform Disney’s “Peter Pan Jr.,” a stage play adaptation for youngsters. Sixty-five grade 6-8 students have been hard at work rehearsing since January. “I love Wendy because she’s really independent,” said Katie Rochette when asked about her role. Wendy “really knows herself,” and isn’t the sort of girl who sits around “timid, needing to be rescued.” “I always liked Tinker Bell, ever since I was younger,” Danyella Kaplan said. “She’s really sassy.” Danyella, who will portray the iconic fairy, has participated in theater for three years. “I just love acting.” Nathaniel Hansen plays Captain Hook. A veteran of theater roles, including the Dodo bird in Alice and Wonderland, and salt and pepper shakers in Beauty and the Beast, this is Nathaniel’s biggest part to play yet. Dawson Trotman truly enjoys his role as Peter Pan, who is “really con-
The council voted unanimously on a game-changer for this year’s budget referendum: voters will have a chance to advise the council, through a non-binding advisory question, whether they feel the budget is too high or too low in a second question on the ballot. The council put the budget forward, with bipartisan agreement, signaling it was ready to be presented to the town at the annual budget meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 8 at the McGee Middle School auditorium. Locals weigh in on ‘Aid in Dying’ bill The Berlin Citizen
Local residents swarmed the Connecticut Legislature with testimony for a March 18 public hearing on a house bill, “An Act Concerning Aid in Dying for Terminally Ill Patients.” The law would allow mentally competent adults who receive a terminal diagnosis that will end their life within six months to be prescribed, and to self-administer, medication that will end their lives. Two doctors
must determine that the patient is terminal, psychologically competent, and acting of their own volition. Patients must make two written requests at least 15 days apart to a doctor. Two witnesses who may not have any family or financial relationship with the patient and must attest the patient is of sound mind, and making the decision of their own volition. Doctors can halt the process if they believe the patient to be suffering from depression. Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen told law-
makers the proposed law is based on Oregon’s 1994 Death With Dignity Act. Jepsen noted that only 59 percent of those who receive life-ending prescriptions in Oregon take them and that of the 859 patients who ended their lives with prescribed medication, 90 percent were enrolled in hospice and their median age was 71. For Jepsen, the Aid in Dying bill “is about giving more options … I believe it is wrong to compel a competent indiSee Aid / Page 2

Lisa Jolley of East Berlin called the proposal legalization of “murder of our most vulnerable residents … it is morally and ethically wrong.” She said it would encourage viewing the terminally ill “as a burden, as disposable.” “Suicide simply creates greater loss,” said Dr. Catherine Holmes of Berlin, a physician of internal medicine, who opposes the bill due to concerns about “the elderly citizen who is afraid of becoming a burden to their children, the under-insured who fear financial distress, (and) the disabled who already fight to maintain independence.” Joseph Hodilla of Middletown said he supports the Aid in Dying bill “after watching my father die helplessly from

Awful mistakes will be made if this gets passed,” said Robin Emond of Cheshire, whose father was diagnosed with a terminal disease, but recovered, and is alive nine years later. “All life comes from God … do we humans know better than the Creator?” Ken Hugo, Special Projects Coordinator at the Elim Park Baptist Home in Cheshire, submitted. “What if we are wrong about a terminal state? We cannot bring that patient back to life if we have made an error.” Still, some stand by the belief that the terminally ill should have the right to end their life. “Perhaps if there were a controlled option like Aid in Dying throughout our country, many of the people who chose to use a firearm to end their lives would have sought out help … and found counseling that may have led to a different, non-violent outcome,” said Patrick McCann of Durham, president of the

The budget will “continue to provide the services important to the town,” said Mayor Rachel Rochette (D), who said she wanted “to commend the Town Manager and all of her staff for really putting their nose to the grindstone.” “It was a tough year,” said Councilor David Evans (R). “We had to take a pretty severe look at the town and the Board of Education.” “I encourage everyone, or as many as will fit in McGee auditorium, to show up and provide us their input. We will take their direction and make further adjustments as necessary,” said Deputy Mayor William Rasmussen (I). Councilor Brendan Luddy (R) said he thought the council “could have done a little better on the number, but at this point we pass it on to the voters to get their opinion.” Town attorney Robert Weber discussed with council members the new question for the ballot, where voters will have a chance to express whether they think the budget is too high or too low. The town is required, by statute and by the charter, to ask whether the budget should be adopted as a simple yes or no question, but nothing restricts the council from

asking a non-binding question alongside as to whether townspeople thought the budget was too high or low, using language found in other statutes and sometimes used by other towns and boards of finance. Council members raised the possibility of attempting to add additional questions or conditional ‘if you voted yes’ language to separate out voters who said “yes” and “no” to the budget, but Weber advised council members to keep things simple. “Without further research I wouldn’t go there,” he said. “We really want to get input from the citizens,” Rochette said, noting that turnout at budget hearings is lower than the number of people who typically vote in the budget referendum. “I think this may be a tool that will be beneficial to us.” After the referendum, Rochette said, the town will know whether the additional question was a success or whether it caused confusion. “I think it is a good idea,” Rasmussen said. “Although I would like more information, I will sup-

Library seeks input from local teens
Letters to the Editor

ability to support all of the services we like, so when the opportunity to accept a highly-competitive $500,000 STEAP grant to continue our economic development progress is voted against by Council Republicans Evans, Luddy and Paonessa, I have to ask why? Grants like this are competitive and a select few municipalities get them each year. It is unheard of that any elected official would vote against accepting a grant that would further economic development initiatives in their community.
As I write this letter, we have just been informed that Berlin has been awarded another $500,000 STEAP grant toward new sidewalks for our seniors at Majorie Moore Village Senior Housing and the Berlin Train Station. It’s shameful if the Council Republicans turn their back on local taxpayers, and at the cost of jeopardizing economic development progress, for a second time. Michael E. How do you get teens into the library? Pizza is one answer for Jennifer Needham, Head of Children’s and Teen’s Services at Berlin-Peck Memorial, who is seeking local teens’ input on library programs. “It’s really all about what they are interested in doing,” Needham said, with the many possibilities including Minecraft, cooking, gaming tournaments, movies, and book discussions. An anime and manga (Japanese comic book) club is also a possibility. Anime and manga clubs are thriving at the Cheshire Public Library and the Durham Public Library. According to Cheshire librarian Kelley Gile, dedicated members of their anime club are proud of Cheshire’s wide collection of manga, the largest in the area. Durham Librarian Karyn Leahy said that anime, manga, and graphic novels are all very popular with teens in Durham. Programs offering teens practical advice on college preparation and financing have also proven successful, Leahy said. Durham has a thriving video game club dedicated to the Wii game Super Smash Bros, and Cheshire draws more than a dozen teens every month to Yu-Gi-Oh card game tournaments. Both Leahy and Gile agree that the key to providing teens with excellent programming is constant change. “No program lasts forever,” Gile said. “A lot of the time, it’s just finding something they will be interested in,” Leahy added.

Irish dancers put on show for Berlin seniors By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
More than 60 seniors rang in Saint Patrick’s Day at the Berlin Senior Center, enjoying a performance from the Shamrock School of Irish Dance, which offers classes in Plainville and West Hartford. Dancers from as young as age 4 performed authentic Irish dances for the local seniors, including “The Saint Patrick’s Day,” featuring dance moves like those seen in the wildly popular Riverdance, to a mixture of old and modern music. “This one takes a lot out of you, and it’s hard to remember the steps,” said Shannon Barry as she introduced the group’s finale, set to “Are You Ready For This?” “They were awesome. I could see smiles on every single one of their faces,” said John Daddabbo, president of the local No. 3035 chapter of the AARP.

“I loved it, are you kidding?” added Johanna Meisterling. Shamrock School of Irish Dance’s founder, and Barry’s mother, Sheila Stevens, said the school is a family business that has been teaching for 28 years. The dancers perform at many senior centers throughout the year. Among the performers is one dancer who will be par-
ticipating in the upcoming world Irish dance championships, March 30 in Montreal, Shaela Barry of West Hartford, Stevens’ granddaughter. Three other students will join Shaela at the national Irish dance championships in Rhode Island this summer: another of Steven’s granddaughters, Mairead Barry, Maryjane Johnson of Newington and Piper Normand of Canton.

Dan Blanchette Dan Blanchette graduated from Berlin High School in 1969 where he was a standout athlete in three sports – track, football and basketball. In football, he was a four-year letterman playing as a halfback, defensive back and kick returner, utilizing his speed for all three positions. During his junior year, he led the team in scoring and was a firstteam All-Northwest Conference selection. As a senior, he, again, was a first-team All-Northwest Conference selection as a halfback. It was in track where Blanchette really stood out. He was a four-year letterman, leaving BHS with four records that still stand, 46 years later. In 1966, Blanchette had a fifthplace finish in the Class M 100 meter dash. During the 1967 Class M championships, he finished second in broad jump, second in long jump and fifth in the 100. That same year, Blanchette had a first-place finish in the Junior Chamber of Commerce State Track Meet in both the 100 and 200, qualifying for the national meet at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. During the 1968 season Class M meet, he finished second in the 220 and third in both the long jump and 100. At the Wesleyan College summer junior track meet that year, Blanchette was a member of the first-place 440 relay team. During his 1969 season, he was the Class M state champion in the 220 with a time of 22.7 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 22 feet-8 inches, which was a new state record; the previous top mark having

The Berlin High School Interact Club is collecting soda can tabs for children. Thomas Knowlton, of the Newington Chapter of Shriners International, explained at a recent Interact meeting that Shriners is “more than just men who drive little cars in parades.” He explained the Shriners’ commitment to helping children and families in need through the Shriners hospitals for children. Their hospitals specialize in orthopedics, spinal cord injuries, burn care and cleft palate repair. Shriners is dedicated to treating children regardless of a family’s ability to pay. By recycling the metal tabs from soda and similar food and drink cans, Shriners help fund some of their services. Any support from the community would be greatly appreciated. Please send tabs to Berlin High School, Attention: Interact Club. — Submitted by Nicole Cyr, Interact Club Member, collection chairman

Sue Saucier, Director of Southington Youth Services, shows one of 500 prom dresses available at Kristen’s Kloset in Southington. | Dave Zajac / For The Citizen
Kristen’s building owner Matt Florian. The store has about 500 dresses available. Last year, about 266 dresses were distributed. Sue Saucier, director of Southington Youth Services, was at the store, formerly a medical office, going over this year’s inventory. She said the layout and fixtures were helpful. Old shelving was used to display shoes, and separate rooms were used for sorting dresses by size. Sizes available range from 0 to 22. Linda Collin, a volunteer at Kristen’s Kloset for six years, said girls seem to be returning to a more traditional prom dress. The store could use more plus-size dresses, she added. Girls looking for plus sizes have a small selection to choose from. Saucier said girls also seem to be favoring brighter colors or classic black, leaving the pastels on the rack. Fulllength dresses remain popular as do strapless ones. Kristen’s Kloset is open to any high school student. Girls must bring their high school identification card to receive a dress along with a voucher or slip from their school guidance counselor. Girls can also obtain a dress by making a small donation, typically $25 for a dress, Saucier said. Another option is to swap
dresses. A girl can bring in a dress in good condition and swap it for a different dress. Collin said the program continues to attract more and more girls from around the state. “We are growing every year and service girls from all over Connecticut,” Collin said. “But that is not at the expense of our Southington girls.” Collin said her mother and 28-year-old daughter both volunteer with her at the store. The store is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m., and Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. Saucier said donations are used to purchase prom tickets or for tuxedo rentals. Costs associated with prom can soar into the hundreds of dollars, between ticket, dress, shoes, accessories, hair and makeup, Saucier said. The store allows teens to attend prom who might not otherwise be able to, she said. Seamstress Sandy Varsell does alterations. Saucier said small fixes, like hemming a dress or taking it in, are offered free of charge. Some of the more involved alterations are offered at a discount. Fitting rooms are available and parents are welcome to accompany their daughters. It is the third time Florian has donated space for Kristen’s Kloset, Saucier said.
Contest eos should be no longer than five minutes. Prizes will be the general public will be able awarded. The deadline is Saturday, April 4. to vote for their favorite. For more information and Participants must be an active member of the Girl contest rules, visit www.faceScouts of Connecticut. Vid- book.com/frontiercorp. From Page 22
