Veterans recognized at Senior Center By Charles Kreutzkamp The Berlin Citizen
“You can judge a community by how they treat their youth and their seniors,” is a truism Senior Center Director Tina Doyle quoted, and one she sees in her work on a daily basis. The Berlin Senior Center held a ceremony honoring senior veterans Nov. 12 prior to a hot lunch and country music performance. “It was nice. I didn’t expect it,” said Bill Banulski, a Vietnam veteran who served in the Marine Corps starting in 1968. The meal and entertainment
are what drew Joe Shaskus, a veteran of World War II who served in the medical corps of the army in Germany in 1944, “just as the war ended,” Shakus said. Both veterans said they enjoyed the meal. According to Doyle, a daily hot lunch Monday through Friday is only a small part of the services the senior center provides to the community’s elderly population, and a valuable part of assisting seniors living on a fixed income, as many Berlin seniors are, according to Doyle. Veterans present were presented with a “goodie bag” and honored with a poetry reading and
a group photo. Doyle thanked Andrew House Healthcare, a Ciena Healthcare organization, for helping to sponsor the program and the meal. “They have been a good friend to us,” Doyle said. “We care a lot about our seniors and our veterans,” said Wendy Mutter, on behalf of the Andrew House. “People don’t realize all we do here,” Doyle said. The Senior Center provides transportation to seniors that are no longer driving to medical appointments, grocery shopping, banks and pharmacies.

Children were bouncing with excitement Nov. 10, many of them literally, awaiting the arrival of a dancer from the touring cast of “Wicked.” A hit number from the show, “Defying Gravity,” played while children and their parents waited for Lauren Haughton to arrive at Dance Legacy on Seymour Road. “It’s wonderful,” said parent J’Amy Caracciolo, mentioning that “Wicked” is her

Doyle said seniors’ needs vary wildly, with the group the center serves going from age 60 to over 100 years old. The Senior Center estimates there are around 4,000 seniors in town. Seniors and family members can get assistance with paperwork, social security, Medicare and medical issues, or get advice on senior housing and assisted living facilities. The senior center also connects families to social services, like the food pantry and the state energy assistance program. Beyond these, the Senior Center also offers seniors a wide variety of options to socialize, “an important part of healthy aging,” Doyle said. “We have classes, exercise, yoga, ceramics… photography, Swedish weaving, bingo, (and) wii bowling,” among other regular and drop-in programs.

The event drew quite a crowd to the Senior Center. “It’s an important part of the important that we’re here, becommunity,” Doyle said. “It’s cause we’re needed.”

“Most of us didn’t (serve in the armed forces) to be thanked. It was a calling,” Aresimowicz said. “On Memorial Day we honor veterans who have died, but on Veterans Day we honor living veterans as well as deceased veterans. We salute their service and honor their sacrifice,” Galgano said. “My grandfather was part of the greatest generation,” Rochette said, also pointing out that her uncle died from exposure to toxic chemicals in Vietnam. As someone who has not served in the military, the mayor said that civilians may not know what it is like to breach a beach at Normandy, hear the echoes of mortars
in Afghanistan or endure the heat in the deserts of Iraq, but “everyone here has grandfathers, uncles, brothers, sons, or other family members who have served and sacrificed.” During the week of Veterans Day, at least two area veterans visited each Berlin school to share stories about their service. Richard D. Hubbard School was visited by one veteran. “The schools are very receptive,” said Berlin VFW Post Commander Tom Uznanski. Uznanski visited Griswold school last year. “It was terrific,” he said, describing “around 600 students sitting on the floor to listen. It’s very rewarding. The kids appreciate it, and the school appreciates it.”

PETS OF THE WEEK Cuddles (far left) is a stunning, 9-year-old lady. She came to FOBAC from a neglectful situation with a bad mouth infection. She has recovered and has gained weight quickly. Cuddles has a great personality and gets along well with dogs and other cats. Equally personable is Boomarang. He has a foot deformity that makes him unique. He recently had growths removed from his ears caused by untreated ear infections. Boomarang is good with other animals and children and ready for a forever home. Help others like Cuddles and Boomarang by attending the FOBAC bake sale on Saturday, Nov. 22 at St. Gabriel’s Church, 68 Main Street, East Berlin. View the adoptable pets on www.fobac.org. BPD to intensify enforcement of safety belt, child safety seat laws The Berlin Police Department will be conducting a “Click it or Ticket High Visibility Seat Belt Campaign starting Nov. 25 running through Nov. 30. This is in conjunction with the statewide “Click it or Ticket campaign sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. During this period, Berlin police officers will conduct
occupant safety belt checks at various locations in town. These checks will be conducted on random days during this two-week period. Locations will be the state highway ramps on Christian Lane and New Britain Road as well as on other local roads in town. The intent of this enforcement effort is to remind motorists to always use good
highway safety sense, especially during this highly traveled holiday season. During this safe driving campaign, motorists are also reminded that state and local police will also be enforcing speed, cell phone, distracted driving, and DUI laws during the entire holiday driving season. — Press Release

Dance daughter’s favorite show, out-placing her previous favorite, “Mary Poppins.” “She’s very excited,” Caracciolo said. It was not long before the guest of honor arrived. Haughton is a member of the dance ensemble that performs “Wicked” at the Bushnell and is also the understudy for Nessarose, the handicapped younger sister of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and protagonist of “Wicked.” “A lot of my girls are so excited to meet a real Broadway star,” said Dance Legacy owner Caroline Van Austin. Broadway Connection sponsored the program, a free class followed by a question and answer session. “Dance is in its prime,” Van Austin said, not only with Broadway performers, but also with the huge number of dance shows on television. Because dance is so diversified, it can be a hugely beneficial experience to have a chance to learn from a wide
top teacher at Dance Legacy. “Performers are so busy on tour, it’s so nice for them to take the time to come into our community.” “I love teaching with Broadway Connection,” Haughton said. Wicked is so popular, Haughton said she has noticed a huge amount of excitement when kids hear they are going to be dancing with someone from the show when compared with other shows she has done. This year marks the 40th year of Dance Legacy. “What a way to celebrate,” Van Austin said. Forty-five students marked the anniversary this year by performing at Walt Disney World in Florida. Dance Legacy has more than 400 students from area towns, with classes running seven days a week. 80s they used to flip them in the frying pan,” Hatzisavvas explained. The most popular dishes at Victoria’s Café include the homemade burgers, paninis, and tomato soup. “I get a lot of compliments on my homemade French fries and home fries,” Hatzisavvas said. Victoria’s Café places a lot of emphasis on homemade cuisine, even mixing their own spices. Mayor Rachel Rochette congratulated the restaurant’s new owners. “I was delighted to learn that an experienced restaurant family had reopened the café in Ferndale Plaza. I wish great success to Wedad, Victoria

When the space recently became available some advisors told us that it was not visible enough. I see the location as secluded, a perfect place for friends and neighbors to gather together. We jumped at the opportunity to reopen this lovely spot.”

Funding for Berlin school security House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D – Berlin/ Southington) announced that four Berlin schools will receive funds to improve security as part of the state’s School Security Grant Program. The funding will reimburse the town for a portion of their costs associated with school security infrastructure improvements. The four schools receiving the funding are McGee Middle School, Willard Elementary School, Griswold Elementary School and Hubbard Elementary School. They will receive a total of $376,400 for security upgrades, which include enhanced surveillance systems and new door locking systems for classrooms. The state will provide $155,942 and the town of Berlin will provide the remaining $220,457. Berlin’s grant is part of the $22 million in state funding that will be used to reimburse municipalities for a portion of the costs associated with security infrastructure improvements at 445 schools. With this additional round, the state has made a total of $43 million available
for school security upgrades at over a thousand Connecticut schools. The program was originally created as part of the historic 2013 legislation on gun violence prevention, mental health and school safety. The program was expanded this year to include all public schools, including technical and inter-district magnet schools, and private schools. The program has also expanded the security infrastructure eligible for reimbursement to include real time interoperable communications and multimedia sharing infrastructure. As under existing law, eligible infrastructure also includes the installation of surveillance cameras, penetration resistant vestibules, ballistic glass, solid core doors, double-door access, computer-controlled electronic locks, entry door buzzer systems, scan card systems, panic alarms, and other systems. The matching-grant award program is administered by the state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP). — Press Release

77 precincts in Connecticut selected for election audit HARTFORD – Secretary of the State Denise Merrill today joined 2nd grade students at Gilead Hill School in Hebron Nov. 13 to randomly select the voting precincts which will have election results audited following the Nov. 4, 2014 general election. As required by Connecticut General Statutes 9-320f, 10 percent of the polling precincts in the election using optical scan voting machines are subject to an audit. All told, 763 polling precincts used optical scan voting machines on Nov. 4, meaning that some 77 precincts were chosen to have their election results audited. Secretary Merrill also released partial voter turnout figures from the 2014 general election showing more than 55 percent of registered voters in Connecticut cast ballots, including nearly 14,000 new voters who took advantage of Election Day Registration to vote. “Voters had their say on Nov. 4 and now we must audit the machine totals from the general election so we can ensure the accuracy of our optical scanners,” said Secretary Merrill, Connecticut’s chief elections official. “I am so happy to involve the wonderful 2nd graders from Gilead Hill School in Hebron in our real-life democracy that must take place after every election. We are committed to making sure Connecticut voters have continued confidence that their votes were recorded accurately and that’s why these independent audits are so vital. We don’t just take the machines’ word for it. So we will have every ballot cast in a full 10 percent of precincts using optical scan machines hand counted and matched against the machine totals. Connecticut has the toughest elections audit law in the country and I am confident that following this audit the numbers will once again match.” Secretary Merrill added, “Our prediction of 55 percent voter turnout for the general election on Nov. 4, 2014
seems to be spot on. I am very encouraged to see that nearly 14,000 Connecticut citizens became new voters because of Election Day registration. That is a remarkable number we can all be proud of because it shows we have expanded Democracy significantly and many new voters participated in elections this year. I commend municipalities across the state for doing a good job accommodating the crowds of first-time voters to register and cast ballots on Election Day.” The post-election audits can begin as of Nov. 19 and must be completed by Nov. 24, 2014. In total, audits will be conducted in 60 precincts. The law requires a hand audit 10 percent of all polling places where optical scan machines were used in all elections and primaries. (Polling precincts which are already part of a recount are exempt from audits by statute). In addition to the 77 precincts chosen for an audit, there were also 23 alternate precincts chosen. The provisions in the law, developed in close cooperation with the computer science department at the University of Connecticut, give Connecticut one of the strictest audit statutes in the country. Connecticut is the first state in New England to require a comprehensive audit of election results. Connecticut General Statute 9-320f states that local Registrars of Voters, “… shall conduct a manual audit of the votes recorded in not less than 10 percent of the voting districts in the state, district or municipality, whichever is applicable. Such manual audit shall be noticed in advance and be open to public observation.” The results of audits will be analyzed by the University of Connecticut and then presented to the Secretary of the State’s Office and the State Elections Enforcement Commission, and ultimately made available to the public. The law contains a deSee Audit / Page 15

Opinion This ain’t rocket science
Back in the 1950s I was vaguely aware that the world was full of dangers (communism, mad-dog killers, flying saucers, whatever) but I was also pretty sure The Government had those threats well in hand — The GovernGlenn ment being, Richter as far as I Commentary could tell, a vague but powerful force that consisted of President Eisenhower, the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, Miss McGee (the principal of my school), Walter Cronkite, the New Britain Police Department (whose black-and-white Buicks you could see from my dentist’s office on the seventh floor of a building in downtown Hardware City), and maybe the Knights of Columbus, because they carried swords and marched in parades. Later, in the 1960s, The Government would start making cars safer by requiring seat belts and padded dashboards and all sorts of other things, but even back in the 1950s we knew that railroads were very safe because there was always a “dead man” pedal, which would bring the train to an abrupt but safe stop if the engineer should fall asleep
or drop dead. Fast-forward about 60 years, though, and that safety myth would be busted when, on Dec. 1, 2013, a Metro-North train operator fell asleep on the Hudson River line and the train (which supposedly had two separate safety systems on it, one of which you’d think would have taken care of just such a situation) instead careened at high speed into a lowspeed curve in the Bronx and derailed, killing four passengers. Meanwhile, The Government had extended its safety reach by mandating standards for child car seats and air bags, and by requiring scary warning signs on ladders, and devices to keep you from losing a hand in the blades of a snow blower, but by now it’s hard to tell whether some of these things are required by law or by the fear of lawsuits. Be that as it may, nowadays a riding lawnmower that’s designed to carry one person at speeds up to maybe 4 mph, and that costs perhaps $2,000, will come to a quick stop if the operator’s foot should slip off the “go” pedal, even for a moment; and if you drop dead and fall off, your Toro or Deere will not only stop but will also cut off the engine so that no frolicking children or neighborhood dogs will be harmed.
And yet, we have trains that are designed to carry hundreds of people at high speeds, and that cost millions, but they do nothing of the sort? Turns out that the Positive Train Control system — which might have stopped the Bronx train before it entered a 30-mph curve at 82 mph and jumped the tracks — hadn’t been installed yet and won’t even be required until 2015, and the Association of American Railroads says it will be impossible to deploy PTC by that date. (PTC was mandated by the federal Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008, when the complicated computer programs it would require hadn’t even been invented.) And yet, there have been incidents on the New York City subway system, as early as 1927, when a much more primitive “dead man” control brought trains to a safe stop after a motorman suffered a heart attack or was otherwise incapacitated. The exotic PTC software isn’t ready yet, so we’re having fatal train crashes that could have been prevented by a system that was working fine in 1927? This looks like a case where the perfect is the enemy of the good. If so, our elected officials should keep the pressure on the railroads to fix this anachronism. There’s no excuse for this.

Smokeout commences today The state Department of Public Health reports that 17.1 percent of the adult population of Connecticut use tobacco. That’s 470,000 users and, just in this state, approximately 4,700 adults will die each year from smoking related causes, according to DPH data. This computes to about 13 deaths each day. Of those smokers, almost 19 percent are over the age of 45. Smokers over 65 years of age represent 7.4 percent of smokers in the state. The annual Great American Smokeout kicks off Nov. 20. It’s a day smokers can put on their calendars and know that they will have company on their quest to quit. The American Cancer Society office, in Rocky Hill, offers 10 Tips to Quit for the upcoming smokeout. The ACS promotion urges smokers to celebrate more birthdays and quit smoking during this year’s Great American Smokeout. If you or someone you love is looking to “kick the habit” this year, here are some helpful tips on how to break free from a smoking addiction. 1) Don’t keep it a secret. Include your friends and family in your quitting process; they can offer support. 2) You’re not alone. More and more people are trying to break free from cigarettes and there are lots of support options available. Many communities, employers, and
health care organizations have free or low-cost counseling and support available to help you quit. 3) Consider using medication to help you quit. There are prescriptions and overthe-counter medications that can help you deal with withdrawal symptoms or even help to reduce the urge to smoke. You’ll want to talk to your doctor first. 4) Dump the memories. Clear the places where you usually smoke of anything that reminds you of cigarettes – like lighters, ashtrays, or matches. Also ask other smokers not to smoke around you, and clean your house and car thoroughly to remove the smell of cigarettes. 5) Avoid places where smokers gather. Go to the movies or other places where smoking is not allowed. 6) Stay calm and stay busy. You may feel some nervous energy but it can be countered by physical and mental activities. Take long strolls and deep breaths of fresh air, and find things to keep your hands busy, like crossword puzzles or yard work. 7) Talk to your doctor. Before you begin any plan for quitting smoking you should check with your doctor to see what might be the best approach for you. Quitting smoking is personal and there isn’t one perfect method. 8) When the urge to smoke See Smokeout / Page 20

Did you know that every year, approximately 48 million people suffer from foodborne illness? According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, holiday buffets, party trays or even a poorly stored turkey can be a culprit of disease. As you prepare for the holiday season with family and friends, the Central Connecticut Health District is urging you to keep your loved ones safe through safe food handling practices. Preventing food-borne illness can be as simple as following four basic steps: clean, separate, cook, and chill. The first step refers to practicing good hygiene, as being clean is extremely important in preventing food-borne illness. All surfaces, cutting boards, utensils, and dishes should be washed often with hot, soapy water. Personal cleanliness is also a must for food safety. Hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds in hot, soapy water before, during, and after food preparation. This is es-

The Berlin Bears C-1 team finished a perfect season with a 25-0 win over Rocky Hill in the CTYFL Championship on Sunday. | Robert Mayer / Submitted
The Berlin Bears C-1 team completed an improbable run on Sunday to win the Connecticut Youth Football League Championship with a 25-0 victory over Rocky Hill. After not winning a single game during the 2013 season as a C-2 team, the Bears finished a perfect 10-0, wrapping up their phenomenal season with a championship in front of a boisterous crowd at Coginchaug High School in Durham. Berlin toppled their title game foes behind touch-
downs from Ryan Stec and Jamie Palmese and a crushing defense that did not allow a single point in three playoff games. “The difference from last year to this year is last year we had two C teams split by age,” Berlin head coach Kevin Sparks said. “The league allows 9- and 10-yearold kids to play at the C level as well as older, lighter 11year olds; 85 pounds and under. So our team was all 9-year-olds with three older See Bears / Page 19

Football The Redcoats punched their ticket to the postseason with a convincing 28-6 victory over East Catholic on Saturday, improving their record to 10-0 with only one game remaining. Senior quarterback Alec Norton led the charge, accounting for a rushing, receiving, and passing touchdown to help Berlin drop the Eagles (7-3). The Redcoats jumped out to an early lead thanks to short yardage touchdown runs from senior Eric Garcia (2 yards) and Norton (1 yard). Senior placekicker Paul Fontes converted both extra point attempts to put Berlin up 14-0 after one quarter of play. The Redcoats expanded their lead to 21-0 by halftime when senior Jonathan Platosz hauled in a four-yard pass from Norton. Berlin finished its scoring in the third quarter with an option play that left the Eagles scratching their heads, as Norton – a wide receiver in years past – hauled in a 40-yard pass from senior tailback Anthony Sisti for the team’s final touchdown.

tough on the edge and linebackers Stec, D’Amore and Sparks filled the gaps. The defense also got great efforts from backs Palmese, Dan Koops, Isiah Morrill and Trevor Graham. “They are a team; each and every one of these kids had a role in its success,” Sparks added. “They are tough as well as being the most unselfish group I have ever

one they had a goal and that goal was to be practicing in mid-November and playing on Nov. 16. Their drive and dedication got them there and into the league finals where they had a chance to deliver on that goal.” The closest game all year for Berlin was its first, when the Bears beat Windsor, 146. From there, Berlin dominated its opponents. The offensive line of Jack Hartan, Sean Malone, Nick Allen, Ryan Aresimowicz, Jaden Sekoll, Jon D’Amore and Rory Mayer pushed around opposing defenses creating huge holes and giving Skates lots of time to throw. lighters playing a schedule against teams that were all at least a year older and many times much bigger. “It was a struggle, but the kids learned a lot and kept competing each and every week, even though we did not win a game. What a difference a year makes. A year older and a bit bigger, we came into this year with basically the same group of kids who worked very hard and did everything our great group of coaches asked them to. They have played together now for three years and this is a big contributing factor of their success, knowing the offense a bit better, and our defense was absolutely stingy this year.” Against Rocky Hill, Berlin got a huge catch from Gianmichael DiDomenico, hauling in a pass from quarterback Justin Skates to keep its first drive going and Stec finished it off with a touchdown run. Skates threw the ball beautifully, hitting Palmese, Tanner Sparks, and Max Wojtusik with crisp
passes. Palmese caught a touchdown pass from Skates and Stec added another touchdown to push Berlin out to a 19-0 lead. Rocky Hill put together its only extended drive just before halftime. Rocky Hill pushed the ball to the Berlin 7-yard line, but the Bears defense stopped the last play on the one-yard line to keep the same score intact at the break. “We had a good feeling all along with this group of kids,” Sparks said. “We won some games at the D level so we knew they had potential. Our coaches are the most dedicated group of guys that I have ever been around, they are extremely football smart and extremely dedicated to the kids and making them the best they can be. DeGroff helped the Redcoats’ 200 medley relay team to a third place finish. The junior was joined by Cervoni,

strikes, do something else. If you feel a craving for a cigarette coming on, take a deep breath, count to 10 and then do something else. Call a supportive friend. Do brief exercises such as push-ups, walking up a flight of stairs, or touching your toes. Anything that will take your mind off your cravings. 9) One will hurt. Many people fall into the trap of thinking that if they only have one cigarette it’s okay. But even that one smoke can get you back in the habit of smoking full time. Keep a supply of oral substitutes like carrots, apples, raisins, or gum handy. 10) Drink lots of fluids to help curb cravings. Water is the best for this, and you’ll want to pass up on coffee and alcohol if they trigger your desire to smoke.
