From east to west the island is gearing up for the holiday season. Whether cooking up a storm for friends or family, or making sure that Santa will bring the perfect gift, it’s no wonder it’s considered the most wonderful time of the year.

Island-wide

We’ve scoured the island –– from the smallest boutiques in St George’s to the homemade wares found in Dockyard, and every where in between, to make sure we’ve filled the pages of our Holiday Spirit Gift Guide with helpful ideas to

make this the best Christmas ever. Turn to our Gift Guide at the end of this supplement to find a variety of ideas for everyone in the family –– from tots to pets, we’ve got you covered. And, we would be remiss if we didn’t feature something delicious for you to whip up to give as a gift or to indulge in on those cold winter days. Check out some of the ideas from Lindo’s on how to package your baked goods up to make the perfect gift. We also have some tips from The Athletic Club on ways to beat the bulge before the new year’s resolutions start to roll in.

Giving

We also have made sure to recognize the reason for the season by highlighting the needs of those less fortunate. Take a look at our special section with the Centre on Philanthropy to see what you can do to make this a special Christmas for those in need. This time of year can be tough for those who are struggling to make ends meet, so let’s take the time this year to remember to give back and instill that sense of charity and giving in our children. But most of all, have a safe and happy holiday! n

HOLIDAY SPIRIT GIFT GUIDE: A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

THE BERMUDA SUN

n CITY OF HAMILTON / Tree of Lights

Plenty of events to get into the Christmas spirit treatment this year. “One of the great things about the lights we have right now is that they are LED,” explained Ms Trott. “That saves us a lot on power costs as they are energy efficient. The lights help to add a festive spirit to the City.”

BY ROBYN BARDGETT rbardgett@bermudasun.bm

The doors to shops will be flung wide open this evening in hopes of enticing locals to start making their holiday purchases. The City of Hamilton has been gearing up for the past month to get the City sparkling in time for Christmas. And tonight is the beginning of the holiday celebrations with the lighting of the tree in front of City Hall and a visit from the man in red himself – Santa Claus. “Tonight we will begin with the lighting of the tree outside of City Hall, which really signifies the start of the holiday season,” said Danilee Trott, Corporation of Hamilton events project manager. The tree lighting takes place at 5.30pm and will also include a special appearance by soloist Sia Spence and there will be hot chocolate and baked goods available. The tree lighting is in aid of the Friends of Hospice charity, which co-hosts the event. “The Tree of Lights symbolizes the people we have loved and lost over the years,” said a Friends of Hospice spokesman. “It’s a great opportunity for people to get together and get into the holiday spirit and give back to a good cause.”

Window display

The next four Fridays shops will be open late just in time for locals to get geared up for all of their holiday shopping. This year the City has also partnered up with the Chamber of Commerce and the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation to make some exciting changes to the events leading up to Christmas. “November 29 will also mark the start of the

GOOD CHEER: Children wait for the arrival of Santa Claus during the Tree of Lights event on the steps of City Hall. window display competition we are running,” Ms Trott explained. “Shoppers will know the shops that are entered into the competition by looking for a sticker in the window of the shops. People are then encouraged to head to our Facebook page where all of the shops that have entered the competition will be displayed and people can vote for their favourite window display. People can also place their votes by paper ballots. We will have little elves going around

during late night shopping.” Shops have been tasked with designing their windows with the hope to encourage people to spend their hard earned dollars in Bermuda, said Ms Trott. The winning shop will receive some exciting prizes including a $500 gift voucher from Belco, a gift voucher from Bermuda Cablevision for cable television or Internet access and a full-page ad to be placed in the Bermuda Sun. “We want to get the

message out to encourage people to spend their Christmas dollars here by getting people into the City to check out the window displays and vote for their favourite. This is a strictly public vote so there will be no judges involved, so the winner will be the public’s favourite.” Other exciting events that will make the City more festive will include entertainment during late night shopping. The line up is set to include the Bermuda

Regiment, school and church choirs and Christmas music will be heard through the streets every night of late night shopping. “Parents can bring their kids and the atmosphere will be a fun, festive atmosphere. People can look forward to some wonderful activities,” said Ms Trott. Of course the streets will also be alight with Christmas lights, and areas that aren’t usually decorated, including the area near Masters will get the star

Another great place to find unique Christmas gifts, as well as stock up on all the delicious produce needed for your holiday meals, is the City Market. The Market takes place every Saturday from midNovember until June from 8am until 1pm and has moved to the newly refurbished Pier Six Hamilton Waterfront Complex. Fresh veggies, jewellery, home baked goods, Bermuda books and knitwear can all be scooped up at the City Market. Other exciting City activities set to take place in the run up to Christmas include the Santa Claus Parade taking place on December 1 from 5.30 pm. On December 7, Hamilton Harbour will see the return of the Christmas Boat Parade, which begins at 6.30pm from outside of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. The course will see the boats, lit up in all their finery, motor along Front Street and circle around past White’s Island. Boats can still be entered up until noon on Friday, December 6. n

FOR MORE INFORMATION on the Boat Parade and how to sign up, visit www. bermudaboatparade.bm VISIT THE City of Hamilotn’s Facebook page to get up to date information about events taking place in the City and the evenings of late night shopping. Plan out your shopping for a debt-free holiday ‘Tis the season and it is very encouraging to see that local stores have quite a lot of great deals and discounts already, and I suspect that it will only get better. There is a good selection of products here on island at very competitive prices and armed with a good plan, a sensible budget and time on your hands we can all have a wonderful and affordable Christmas. Here are few tips to help.

HONEY ADAMS BELL

Make a list and a budget

Do your list now and determine what this holiday season is going to cost you and your family. Cost out everything and budget your spending for this month and next in preparation for the holidays. However, be very careful that you do not start spending more than you can afford. A good way to stick to an affordable budget is to have a concise list of everything you need. Do a breakdown of what you need for the holidays and next to each item and name on your list write the dollar amount you can afford to spend. Add it all up; can you afford all of this without going into debt? Gift giving is probably the one area where the budget is most flexible so do not be afraid to cut back on how many gifts you give. While you are making your list and putting together your budget create an “unnecessary” list –– things you really do not need to purchase, people you do not necessarily have to get a gift and anything you can do without, including food. Be very realistic and ask yourself “how will I pay for it?” Spend only what you can afford, you will not regret it, but you will regret overspending and spending next year paying for that one day in December.

Guest columnist

Look for deals now

There are lots of sales going on and even items that are not on sale may be cheaper to buy locally. If you are considering shopping abroad or ordering off the Internet, carefully factor in all of the additional costs –– taxes, duty, shipping etc. Another great way to get nice things at a good price is to buy gently used items. Do not be afraid to purchase secondhand items as a gift, you can get items that appeal to the recipient’s taste for a fraction of the cost. For example, most gardeners will be

happy to receive pretty, decorative plant pots and people that entertain outside a lot are usually happy to receive used outdoor furniture, grills, hammocks and the like that are in good condition. Now is also a good time to start looking for good deals on your food needs as well. Have a list of what food you will need for the holidays and start stocking up, but only on what you need and can afford. Be sure that you are fully aware of all exchange, return and refund policies before you buy anything, especially if it is on sale.

Avoid buying on credit

Don’t rely on credit to have a good Christmas. Save money by spending only what you can afford without using your credit card. When you calculate the cost of everything on your list if you can’t afford to spend that much cash, trim the list. Do you really want to still be paying credit card bills in March for items you bought in December? Remember, it’s not wise to buy this year’s Christmas presents with next year’s money.

Gift cards

If you are considering getting gift cards or certificates as gifts be sure to choose a business that the recipient frequents or really wished they could if she had the extra cash. Don’t purchase a gift card from a store that doesn’t cater to his or her taste. Before you purchase a gift card or gift certificate, read the fine print very carefully. If you don’t like the terms and conditions, buy it elsewhere and make sure to check the expiration date and share that information with the recipient. Lastly, it is a good idea to shop locally as much as we can. While it is not always possible to get everything you need locally, there are many good deals to get in our local stores and we all can benefit. The money stays in our community –– we are investing in each other. At Consumer Affairs, we offer advice to consumers, businesses and other organizations. Before contacting us we recommend that you first visit our website, www.ca.gov.bm and read the relevant advice. If you are unable to find the information you require on our website please email us at consumers@gov.bm. n

HONEY ADAMS BELL is the education officer for Consumer Affairs.

Give the gift of donations Many people are struggling right now so it’s important that we not forget those less fortunate during the holiday season. With huge wish lists and a constant stream of cash donations needed to keep a charity afloat, there is no better time than around Christmas to offer up your time, money or donations to give the charities on the Island, who touch so many lives, a helping hand. One easy way to help out is by offering up your time. Charities are always looking for extra help, especially during this busy period. Another fun idea is to pool together resources either through a family, with friends or along with co-workers and donate money or goods to a charity instead of a gift exchange. This is an especially good idea for those hard to buy on your list. They may have a favourite charity you can donate to in their name. The Centre on Philanthropy has put

‘Spend only what you can afford, you will not regret it, but will regret overspending and spending next year paying for that one day in December.’

together a list of needs for the Island charities to help make giving a little easier.

HOLIDAY SPIRIT GIFT GUIDE: A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION

THE BERMUDA SUN

n HOLIDAY BAKING / Perfect foodie gifts

Delicious treats make perfect holiday gifts BY ZACH MONIZ Manager, Lindo’s Group of Companies

As any Bermudian knows, Christmas is the most special time of year. Bermuda is a tight-knit community of family and friends, which can sometimes make finding the perfect holiday gift a bit challenging. In the Lindo family, we’ve always encouraged homemade gifts that are truly from the heart. The beauty of homemade gifts is that they are fun to make, allow you to run with your creativity and the whole family can get involved. They are also unique and personal. Homemade food items are great gifts and one of the hot trends right now is giving food making kits. Think of a food item your friend or family member particularly enjoys and build a kit containing all the ingredients needed to make it. For instance, choose some colourful cupcake baking cups, an assortment of sprinkles, a small recipe book, a container of icing and a frosting spatula. Arrange all the items on red or green crinkle paper stuffing in a vintage metal lunch box and voilà! You have a cupcake baking kit. Another idea for someone who enjoys sweets is an ice cream sundae kit. Include a variety of cones, jars of caramel and chocolate

sauce, as well as tiny bags of chocolate chips, nuts, sprinkles and anything else that would be fun on a sundae. Package the items among layers of fanned tissue paper in a fancy ice bucket. Do you have a griller in your life? Then why not create a homemade seasonings kit? Make your favourite meat rubs and package them in little tins with homemade labels and tie them together with a red and white bow.

Favourite recipes

Are you renowned for your pasta sauce? Then share it with your friends and family in a pasta making kit. Dress up the jar of sauce and present it with various shapes and colours of gourmet pasta. Throw in a bottle of Italian wine and biscotti, and strategically place it all together in a brand new silver colander. We love our hot cocoa by the fire during the winter in Bermuda. To turn it into a creative holiday gift, take a vintage mason jar filled halfway with hot cocoa mix and top it with fluffy white marshmallows. Decorate the jar with festive stickers and wrap the lid with holidaycoloured twine. Pair with homemade chocolatedipped peppermint sticks which serve as the perfect stirring tool while adding holiday flavour to the

COOKIE JAR: Giving homemade goodies in fun packaging can be made festive with bows and ribbons. drink. Bundle the peppermint sticks in a decorated wax paper bag and use a hole punch to create a way to tie the bag to the jar. For adult cocoa, you can even include a small bottle of Irish cream that can be attached to the jar with the twine. One of the most important aspects of the homemade food gift is the packaging. This is where you can be really creative and have fun. Ingenious packaging is probably right under your nose –– snazzy ribbons, unusual bottles

and jars, boxes, and stylish papers and tags. Even a plain brown paper bag can be transformed into chic wrapping. Those who are really crafty may even create a gift container that’s so special it remains a treasured keepsake long after the treat inside is devoured. Also, think about ways you can reuse everyday containers to create unique packaging for all your holiday goodies. For example, a typical potato chip canister makes the perfect container for

home-baked cookies, chocolate covered pretzels or peanut brittle chunks. Simply cover the can with your choice of paper, adhere a homemade label and decorate with ribbon along the top and bottom edges of the can. You can reuse pasta sauce jars or other glass jars of all sizes for packaging homemade candy whether it be chocolate covered peanuts, peppermint bark or fudge. Using silver or gold thin wire, adorn the jar with small bundles of holiday

greenery and mistletoe. You can even get your children involved to make tiny paper snowflakes that you can glue to the jar. Another fun way you can use a glass jar is to create a cake in a jar. Start with baking your favourite cupcakes. Once cooled, cut them in half lengthwise and layer them in the jar between icing. Use a pastry bag so you can make the perfect frosting swirl on top. For an added touch, tie an elegant silver spoon to the jar with a thick red velvet ribbon. Distinctive bottles also make the perfect gift containers for homemade infused cooking oils, barbecue sauce or a variety of wines and liqueurs. Hopefully, you’ve been inspired to put on your crafting hat and create homemade gifts this holiday season. Not only are they fun to make but also they have the potential to be loved and cherished far longer than any store-bought present. n

n HOLIDAY BAKING / Recipe

Let your baking creativity run wild BY ROBYN BARDGETT rbardgett@bermudasun.bm

Chocolate is always an easy go-to gift for all types of holiday events. Whether giving as a gift to a sweet-lover or as a thank you gift for the perfect hostess, chocolate is universally loved. Bark is a funny name for a really delicious and versatile chocolate that is so easy to make and customize for every person on your gift-giving list. You’ll never look at a box of chocolate the same way when you realize how easy it is to make your own delicious chocolates. Once you make bark, which takes very little tools and not a lot of time, it is coarsely chopped to give it its characteristc tree bark look –– hence the name. While it may not look as pretty as a box of chocolates, bark’s rustic, homemade quality, is actually quite appealing when packaged up in festive paper or a fun box or tin. From chewy to crunchy to super sweet or dark chocolate topped with salty, crunchy cashews, your imagination can literally run wild when it comes to making a variety of bark flavours. Choose from the list below to customize your bark, but don’t let this list limit your ideas –– take a look in your pantry for inspiration and give this delicious treat a try. Or if you’re short on time, try our festive Peppermint Stick and Mini Marshmallow Bark, below.

Start with the base Chocolate: 1 pound n Bittersweet chocolate n Semisweet chocolate n White chocolate n Half bittersweet and half white chocolate (for swirled bark)

Peppermint Stick and Mini Marshmallow Bark Ingredients n 1/2 pound each, white and milk chocolate n 10 peppermint sticks, broken into pieces n One bag mini marshmallows Prepare the pan Line a baking sheet with foil, shiny-side up. Melt the chocolate Make sure all your tools are dry. Chop the milk chocolate into 1/2-inch pieces and place the chopped chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 30 seconds, then stir with a rubber spatula. Continue microwaving and stirring at 30-second intervals until melted, 3 to 5 minutes total. Spread it out Pour the milk chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet; use the rubber spatula to spread it into a 10-to-12-inch circle, about 1/4 inch thick. Repeat from “melt the chocolate” with the white chocolate. Pour the white chocolate on top of the milk chocolate and use a knife to swirl the two together. Add your toppings Press the peppermint stick pieces and mini marshmallows into the chocolate,

arranging them so each bite has a mix of flavours and textures. Let the bark harden completely at room temperature, about 1 hour. (If the room is warm, you

may need to freeze the bark for a few minutes.) Break into pieces and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks. n

Give yourself the gift Battle the bulge this holiday of savings from Digicel

n KEEP FIT / Tips

SUBMITTED BY THE ATHLETIC CLUB

Christmas may only last one day, but it is a common fact that most people indulge themselves with food and drink more so than usual over the two to three week festive period. People’s personal health usually takes a back seat. Consider this, if you ate one mince pie a day over the festive period then by the end of December you would become more than 1kg heavier. You would in fact resemble Santa Claus more than you would resemble yourself. You will then undoubtedly jump on the scales and shudder with horror as the pounds pile on, this will often be followed up by your New Year’s resolution to join a gym and pay a large initiation fee. Sound familiar? Well not this year! Here are four handy tips to put the fun back in stay-

ing healthy and to keep you in shape over the Christmas period:

Eat the reindeer

Pick lean meats, such as reindeer, which are lower in cholesterol, calories and fat than other meats. Other examples include chicken and turkey breast.

Sleep

Take a couple of nights off as it is vital to allow the body to recuperate and fight the bulge.

Have a ball

Take to the Swiss Ball this Christmas. Research shows you can gain over 40 per cent of extra core muscle by doing your usual stomach workout on the ball.

SUPPLIED BY DIGICEL Merry Christmas to… YOU! Did you forget someone on your Christmas list? Think carefully: family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, pets… that’s all you could possibly need to cover, right? There’s one important person you might be forgetting. That person is you! While the Christmas season is a fantastic time to purchase gifts for the special people in your life, it is also a time to score some pretty awesome deals that can save

you money for the whole year to come. These deals might not make obvious gifts for other people, but are perfect to give yourself. Let’s say you’re looking at tech gifts, for example. A new computer makes a wonderful gift. Less obvious is the Internet service that will allow that computer to reach its full potential. There are holiday deals on Internet See SAVINGS, page 10

Oscar the Elf, whose name stands for ‘Overseas cargo and reliability’ says, “Many stores will tell their customers that if they don’t stock it, then you don’t need it. That’s not the case at Gorham’s. Our philosophy is if we don’t stock it then let us get it for you.” Gorham’s will be there to assist you searching on-line through our many channels of distribution, including True Value. But that’s only the beginning, we’ll be glad to help you search the Internet with other online shopping sites such as Amazon, Walmart, Toys ‘r’ Us, Depot, Sears, Babies ‘r’ Us, Ikea and the list goes on and on. We have four online computers where you may sit down at your leisure and browse the many shopping sites to make your selection from. Once you have made that selection then the trained Gorham’s staff will help you finish the transaction.

Sea shipments will arrive in Bermuda in approximately two to three weeks. The rate of duty would be the same regardless of the shipping option selected. Depending on the speed of delivery Santa will need your packages to arrive at his special Gorham’s North Pole freight centre by: n December 13 for economy air freight. n December 17 for priority air freight. n December 5 for sea freight. At Digicel, the Christmas promotion includes a home Internet and bundles sale. By switching to Digicel Internet, you could save 25 per cent on your home Internet or a bundled mobile and home Internet plan for one whole year. Those savings add up. By choosing the lowest Internet plan, a $30 home Internet plan with 2 MB speeds, you would save $90 over the year. Alternatively, if you choose the highest bundled plan, the Ultimate Bundle –– a $275 all-you-can-eat package for home Internet, mobile voice, text, and data –– your savings would be $825 for the year. If you figure that the Ultimate Bundle already saves you $74 per month over what you would pay for the same home Internet and mobile services separately, the actual savings work out to be over $1,700 for the year! If you’re one of the people who look forward to receiving all the channels at the holiday season, you’d probably love to have free access to Netflix content as well. Say, wouldn’t it be incredible if you could have free Netflix for the whole year? Digicel Stream is a new service that provides access to unlimited Netflix content, including thousands of movies and TV episodes. All you need is a Digicel Internet connection and a Netflix compatible device, such as a Wii, Xbox, or a computer. Digicel Stream is free for one year with activation of a Digicel Internet plan or Digicel Bundle this holiday season. Again, this adds up, saving you over $95 for the year. Christmas is also a great time to win. Keep an eye out for contests and prize draws that could allow you to win some sweet gifts for the people on your list. By signing up for Digicel Internet or a Digicel Bundle, you will be automatically entered into a weekly prize draw for hundreds of spectacular prizes including a month of free service, a $50 iTunes card, a Samsung Galaxy S4, a $500 gift voucher, a Chromebook, a spa day, or a Kia Soul from Bermuda Motors. As you work your way through your Christmas list, remember to take note of holiday deals that can save you money all year long and give you opportunities to win. If you start to feel guilty about spoiling yourself this Christmas with such great deals, just remember that you can put all the money you saved towards more gifts for your loved ones! n

A large variety of toys and more at great prices ROBYN BARDGETT rbardgett@bermudasun.bm

There are always hot commodities in toys every Christmas and children are always quick to let Santa know exactly what it is they want every year. While Santa works hard to get all the presents ready, parents are also working hard to make sure they have enough in their pocketbook to ensure the perfect toys are under the tree each year. Luckily, someone is looking out for parents when it comes to getting the best deal on toys. With their price match guarantee, Gibbons Company is offering customers on the hunt for toys a way to get those items at great prices. “If you can ship in an item at a lower price than we are selling it for and you can prove it we will match that price,” said Gibbons CEO Paula Clarke. “This year we have a large selection of toys and we pride ourselves in providing value for money

and fair pricing. “We have a lot more space this year after expanding the children’s department, so there is a great selection of toys.” The children’s department is bursting full with all sorts of ideas for Christmas. “We have a great selection, from early learning educational toys to recreational toys,” said Ms Clarke. On a recent visit there were slides and ride on toys and lots of toys featuring favourite characters such as Dora the Explorer and Batman. The shop is also filled with puzzles, blocks, interactive toys and rocking toys. Other brand names include Fisher Price, Little Tikes and Tiny Love.

Nursery

Along with larger items, the shop is also filled with perfect stocking stuffers. They also haven’t forgotten about the youngest members of the family, with tons of baby items including rattles and crib

and stroller toys. Of course there is also a great selection of items to kit out your entire nursery –– from cribs, strollers, play yards and feeding equipment –– the store is full of everything a mother could need. Parents can also stock on clothing needs with a range of clothes from newborn to size 18 for girls and newborn to size 16 for boys. “We have everything for clothes this Christmas from church clothes to party dresses and ‘My First Christmas’ outfits,” said Ms Clarke.

FUN: An assortment of interactive toys on display at Gibbons Company.

The savings at Gibbons don’t just stop with their price match guarantee. To celebrate Black Friday, which happens today, the store will have tons of deals when they open the shop at 5am until they close at 9pm. Savings can be found throughout Gibbons as well as 25 Reid and Nine West. “Black Friday is one of the biggest days in November and it really kicks off the holiday shopping season,” said Ms Clarke. Starting up again next Friday until Christmas, customers can also get 20 per cent off their purchase throughout the store when they donate at least $5 to charity. “Each week we have a different charity in the shop and we ask that customers make a minimum donation of $5,” said Ms Clarke. “They do something to give back and we just facilitate it –– all the money goes to the charity. People can feel good

about giving to charity and benefit with the 20 per cent off all day at Gibbons Company.” Charities set to benefit include Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross and the Sunshine League. Thursday night corporate shopping nights are also in full swing and the shops will be open late on Thursday, to facilitate, as well as Friday night for late night shopping until Christmas. The shop also opens on Sundays from 1pm-5pm. “Basically we work hard to keep Bermuda-made money spent and kept in Bermuda and ultimately continue to employ Bermudians. There are 4,000 people employed in retail in Bermuda and that’s before you add in ancillary services. We need to keep us working. “We try to tailor everything around the needs of Bermudians and we have everything for the home for gifting and apparel as well as men’s and women’s shoes. “Watch this space as Gibbons Company is always doing new things.” n

The iconic TOMS shoes, which can be bought at 25 Reid, have a back story perfect for this time of year. The canvas shoes, which now come in a range of styles and colours have been a hit on the high street. But their One for One campaign has also touched their customers. For every shoe purchased, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need.

TOMS says, “The premise is simple, but the potential to help others is huge. “Since we started in 2006, our giving has grown significantly.” The company doesn’t just end with giving shoes, they also produce eyewear and have the same programme in which a pair of glasses is donated to help restore sight to an individual in need. Toaster ovens use less energy than fullsize ovens and produce less heat.

Get the right fit. Save energy by using the right pot and lid. Use the smallest pot and burner to get the job done, and use lids to keep heat in.

Chill with care. Don’t make your fridge too cold and always use the energy-saver setting. Also, don’t over-fill your refrigerator, as it will have to work harder to cool down.

For example, appliances with built-in clocks always draw small amounts of energy.

Enjoy more time with loved ones. Why not enjoy the holidays watching one TV together, rather than having several on in different rooms? Remember, too, the bigger the TV screen, the more energy it uses.

Spend wisely. Choose “Energy Star”. When buying new home appliances or electronics, choose highly rated Energy Star models. They use less energy, save money and help protect the environment.

n HEAD WEST / Dockyard

Plenty of holiday cheer in the West End BY ROBYN BARDGETT rbardgett@bermudasun.bm

While the holidays are certainly focused on giving and receiving thoughtful gifts, it’s also about getting into the festive spirit and enjoying more time spent with family and friends. Shopping for gifts can be hectic around this time of year, but why not make a day or family event out of what might seem like a chore and keep that Christmas Grinch at bay. Heading West to Somerset Village and Dockyard might be just the ticket for creating lasting family memories. Over the next three Sundays, Dockyard will be the go-to spot for all your holiday merriment. There will be elves on hand to wrap your purchases for free as well as a snow room for people with a hankering for the white stuff. There will be craft demonstrations, food sampling, a charity Christmas tree and holiday movies showing throughout the day.

HEAVEN: The Pastry Shop is a haven for sweet lovers. The man in red will also make an appearance, rounding it out to be a perfect family affair. Down in Somerset Village, the town is also getting into the festive

spirit. There will be plenty of opportunities to pick up the perfect gift, but head to Somerset Village on December 5 for a latenight shopping experience. Several shops will be open and hosting special events for the evening, including Somerset Pharmacy, which is hosting a wine and cheese night to get their customers into the holiday spirit while they shop. Here are some of our favourite places to shop, explore and eat in the West End:
