From east to west the island is gearing up for the holiday season. Whether cooking up a storm for friends or family, or making sure that Santa will bring the perfect gift, it’s no wonder it’s considered the most wonderful time of the year.

We’ve scoured the island –– from the smallest boutiques in St George’s to the homemade wares found in Dockyard, and every where in between, to make sure we’ve filled the pages of our Holiday Spirit Gift Guide with helpful ideas to

make this the best Christmas ever. Turn to our Gift Guide at the end of this supplement to find a variety of ideas for everyone in the family –– from tots to pets, we’ve got you covered. And, we would be remiss if we didn’t feature something delicious for you to whip up to give as a gift or to indulge in on those cold winter days. Check out some of the ideas from Lindo’s on how to package your baked goods up to make the perfect gift. We also have some tips from The Athletic Club on ways to beat the bulge before the new year’s resolutions start to roll in.

Plenty of events to get into the Christmas spirit treatment this year. “One of the great things about the lights we have right now is that they are LED,” explained Ms Trott. “That saves us a lot on power costs as they are energy efficient. The lights help to add a festive spirit to the City.”

The doors to shops will be flung wide open this evening in hopes of enticing locals to start making their holiday purchases. The City of Hamilton has been gearing up for the past month to get the City sparkling in time for Christmas. And tonight is the beginning of the holiday celebrations with the lighting of the tree in front of City Hall and a visit from the man in red himself – Santa Claus. “Tonight we will begin with the lighting of the tree outside of City Hall, which really signifies the start of the holiday season,” said Danilee Trott, Corporation of Hamilton events project manager. The tree lighting takes place at 5.30pm and will also include a special appearance by soloist Sia Spence and there will be hot chocolate and baked goods available. The tree lighting is in aid of the Friends of Hospice charity, which co-hosts the event. “The Tree of Lights symbolizes the people we have loved and lost over the years,” said a Friends of Hospice spokesman. “It’s a great opportunity for people to get together and get into the holiday spirit and give back to a good cause.”

Window display

The next four Fridays shops will be open late just in time for locals to get geared up for all of their holiday shopping. This year the City has also partnered up with the Chamber of Commerce and the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation to make some exciting changes to the events leading up to Christmas. “November 29 will also mark the start of the

People are then encouraged to head to our Facebook page where all of the shops that have entered the competition will be displayed and people can vote for their favourite window display. People can also place their votes by paper ballots. We will have little elves going around

during late night shopping.” Shops have been tasked with designing their windows with the hope to encourage people to spend their hard earned dollars in Bermuda, said Ms Trott. The winning shop will receive some exciting prizes including a $500 gift voucher from Belco, a gift voucher from Bermuda Cablevision for cable television or Internet access and a full-page ad to be placed in the Bermuda Sun. “We want to get the

message out to encourage people to spend their Christmas dollars here by getting people into the City to check out the window displays and vote for their favourite. This is a strictly public vote so there will be no judges involved, so the winner will be the public’s favourite.” Other exciting events that will make the City more festive will include entertainment during late night shopping. The line up is set to include the Bermuda

Regiment, school and church choirs and Christmas music will be heard through the streets every night of late night shopping. “Parents can bring their kids and the atmosphere will be a fun, festive atmosphere. People can look forward to some wonderful activities,” said Ms Trott. Of course the streets will also be alight with Christmas lights, and areas that aren’t usually decorated, including the area near Masters will get the star

Another great place to find unique Christmas gifts, as well as stock up on all the delicious produce needed for your holiday meals, is the City Market. The Market takes place every Saturday from midNovember until June from 8am until 1pm and has moved to the newly refurbished Pier Six Hamilton Waterfront Complex. Fresh veggies, jewellery, home baked goods, Bermuda books and knitwear can all be scooped up at the City Market. Other exciting City activities set to take place in the run up to Christmas include the Santa Claus Parade taking place on December 1 from 5.30 pm. On December 7, Hamilton Harbour will see the return of the Christmas Boat Parade, which begins at 6.30pm from outside of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. The course will see the boats, lit up in all their finery, motor along Front Street and circle around past White’s Island. Boats can still be entered up until noon on Friday, December 6. n

Plan out your shopping for a debt-free holiday ‘Tis the season and it is very encouraging to see that local stores have quite a lot of great deals and discounts already, and I suspect that it will only get better. There is a good selection of products here on island at very competitive prices and armed with a good plan, a sensible budget and time on your hands we can all have a wonderful and affordable Christmas. Here are few tips to help.

Make a list and a budget

Do your list now and determine what this holiday season is going to cost you and your family. Cost out everything and budget your spending for this month and next in preparation for the holidays. However, be very careful that you do not start spending more than you can afford. A good way to stick to an affordable budget is to have a concise list of everything you need. Do a breakdown of what you need for the holidays and next to each item and name on your list write the dollar amount you can afford to spend. Add it all up; can you afford all of this without going into debt? Gift giving is probably the one area where the budget is most flexible so do not be afraid to cut back on how many gifts you give. While you are making your list and putting together your budget create an “unnecessary” list –– things you really do not need to purchase, people you do not necessarily have to get a gift and anything you can do without, including food. Be very realistic and ask yourself “how will I pay for it?” Spend only what you can afford, you will not regret it, but you will regret overspending and spending next year paying for that one day in December.

Look for deals now

There are lots of sales going on and even items that are not on sale may be cheaper to buy locally. If you are considering shopping abroad or ordering off the Internet, carefully factor in all of the additional costs –– taxes, duty, shipping etc. Another great way to get nice things at a good price is to buy gently used items. Do not be afraid to purchase secondhand items as a gift, you can get items that appeal to the recipient’s taste for a fraction of the cost. For example, most gardeners will be

happy to receive pretty, decorative plant pots and people that entertain outside a lot are usually happy to receive used outdoor furniture, grills, hammocks and the like that are in good condition. Now is also a good time to start looking for good deals on your food needs as well. Have a list of what food you will need for the holidays and start stocking up, but only on what you need and can afford. Be sure that you are fully aware of all exchange, return and refund policies before you buy anything, especially if it is on sale.

Avoid buying on credit

Don’t rely on credit to have a good Christmas. Save money by spending only what you can afford without using your credit card. When you calculate the cost of everything on your list if you can’t afford to spend that much cash, trim the list. Do you really want to still be paying credit card bills in March for items you bought in December? Remember, it’s not wise to buy this year’s Christmas presents with next year’s money.

Gift cards

If you are considering getting gift cards or certificates as gifts be sure to choose a business that the recipient frequents or really wished they could if she had the extra cash. Don’t purchase a gift card from a store that doesn’t cater to his or her taste. Before you purchase a gift card or gift certificate, read the fine print very carefully. If you don’t like the terms and conditions, buy it elsewhere and make sure to check the expiration date and share that information with the recipient. Lastly, it is a good idea to shop locally as much as we can. While it is not always possible to get everything you need locally, there are many good deals to get in our local stores and we all can benefit. Give the gift of donations Many people are struggling right now so it’s important that we not forget those less fortunate during the holiday season. With huge wish lists and a constant stream of cash donations needed to keep a charity afloat, there is no better time than around Christmas to offer up your time, money or donations to give the charities on the Island, who touch so many lives, a helping hand. One easy way to help out is by offering up your time. Charities are always looking for extra help, especially during this busy period. Another fun idea is to pool together resources either through a family, with friends or along with co-workers and donate money or goods to a charity instead of a gift exchange. This is an especially good idea for those hard to buy on your list. They may have a favourite charity you can donate to in their name. The Centre on Philanthropy has put

HUMPBACK WHALE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

The Humpback Whale Research Foundation’s mission, through exploration of Bermuda’s waters, research, data analysis and educational outreach-- is to promote awareness and understanding of the humpback whales to protect their rights and by extension other cetaceans as a step towards conserving our marine environment. Our intermediate goal is to identify over 1,000 individual humpback whales passing through our waters by the end of 2016. By the end of 2013 we had identified 826 individual whales by obtaining their unique fluke IDs. This compares to 145 Bermuda fluke IDs over the 40 years before this project began in 2007. As any Bermudian knows, Christmas is the most special time of year. Bermuda is a tight-knit community of family and friends, which can sometimes make finding the perfect holiday gift a bit challenging. In the Lindo family, we’ve always encouraged homemade gifts that are truly from the heart. The beauty of homemade gifts is that they are fun to make, allow you to run with your creativity and the whole family can get involved. They are also unique and personal. Homemade food items are great gifts and one of the hot trends right now is giving food making kits. Think of a food item your friend or family member particularly enjoys and build a kit containing all the ingredients needed to make it. For instance, choose some colourful cupcake baking cups, an assortment of sprinkles, a small recipe book, a container of icing and a frosting spatula. Arrange all the items on red or green crinkle paper stuffing in a vintage metal lunch box and voilà! You have a cupcake baking kit. Another idea for someone who enjoys sweets is an ice cream sundae kit. Include a variety of cones, jars of caramel and chocolate

sauce, as well as tiny bags of chocolate chips, nuts, sprinkles and anything else that would be fun on a sundae. Package the items among layers of fanned tissue paper in a fancy ice bucket. Do you have a griller in your life? Then why not create a homemade seasonings kit? Are you renowned for your pasta sauce? Then share it with your friends and family in a pasta making kit. Dress up the jar of sauce and present it with various shapes and colours of gourmet pasta. Throw in a bottle of Italian wine and biscotti, and strategically place it all together in a brand new silver colander. We love our hot cocoa by the fire during the winter in Bermuda. To turn it into a creative holiday gift, take a vintage mason jar filled halfway with hot cocoa mix and top it with fluffy white marshmallows. This is where you can be really creative and have fun. Ingenious packaging is probably right under your nose –– snazzy ribbons, unusual bottles

and jars, boxes, and stylish papers and tags. Even a plain brown paper bag can be transformed into chic wrapping. Those who are really crafty may even create a gift container that’s so special it remains a treasured keepsake long after the treat inside is devoured. Also, think about ways you can reuse everyday containers to create unique packaging for all your holiday goodies. For example, a typical potato chip canister makes the perfect container for

home-baked cookies, chocolate covered pretzels or peanut brittle chunks. Simply cover the can with your choice of paper, adhere a homemade label and decorate with ribbon along the top and bottom edges of the can. You can reuse pasta sauce jars or other glass jars of all sizes for packaging homemade candy whether it be chocolate covered peanuts, peppermint bark or fudge. Using silver or gold thin wire, adorn the jar with small bundles of holiday

greenery and mistletoe. You can even get your children involved to make tiny paper snowflakes that you can glue to the jar. Another fun way you can use a glass jar is to create a cake in a jar. Start with baking your favourite cupcakes. Once cooled, cut them in half lengthwise and layer them in the jar between icing. Use a pastry bag so you can make the perfect frosting swirl on top. For an added touch, tie an elegant silver spoon to the jar with a thick red velvet ribbon. Distinctive bottles also make the perfect gift containers for homemade infused cooking oils, barbecue sauce or a variety of wines and liqueurs. Hopefully, you’ve been inspired to put on your crafting hat and create homemade gifts this holiday season. Bark is a funny name for a really delicious and versatile chocolate that is so easy to make and customize for every person on your gift-giving list. You’ll never look at a box of chocolate the same way when you realize how easy it is to make your own delicious chocolates. Once you make bark, which takes very little tools and not a lot of time, it is coarsely chopped to give it its characteristc tree bark look –– hence the name. While it may not look as pretty as a box of chocolates, bark’s rustic, homemade quality, is actually quite appealing when packaged up in festive paper or a fun box or tin. From chewy to crunchy to super sweet or dark chocolate topped with salty, crunchy cashews, your imagination can literally run wild when it comes to making a variety of bark flavours. Peppermint Stick and Mini Marshmallow Bark Ingredients n 1/2 pound each, white and milk chocolate n 10 peppermint sticks, broken into pieces n One bag mini marshmallows Prepare the pan Line a baking sheet with foil, shiny-side up. Melt the chocolate Make sure all your tools are dry. Chop the milk chocolate into 1/2-inch pieces and place the chopped chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave 30 seconds, then stir with a rubber spatula. Continue microwaving and stirring at 30-second intervals until melted, 3 to 5 minutes total. Spread it out Pour the milk chocolate onto the prepared baking sheet; use the rubber spatula to spread it into a 10-to-12-inch circle, about 1/4 inch thick. Repeat from “melt the chocolate” with the white chocolate. Pour the white chocolate on top of the milk chocolate and use a knife to swirl the two together. Add your toppings Press the peppermint stick pieces and mini marshmallows into the chocolate,

arranging them so each bite has a mix of flavours and textures. Let the bark harden completely at room temperature, about 1 hour. (If the room is warm, you

may need to freeze the bark for a few minutes.) Break into pieces and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 to 2 weeks. n

While the holidays are certainly focused on giving and receiving thoughtful gifts, it’s also about getting into the festive spirit and enjoying more time spent with family and friends. Shopping for gifts can be hectic around this time of year, but why not make a day or family event out of what might seem like a chore and keep that Christmas Grinch at bay. Heading West to Somerset Village and Dockyard might be just the ticket for creating lasting family memories. Over the next three Sundays, Dockyard will be the go-to spot for all your holiday merriment. There will be elves on hand to wrap your purchases for free as well as a snow room for people with a hankering for the white stuff. There will be craft demonstrations, food sampling, a charity Christmas tree and holiday movies showing throughout the day.

HEAVEN: The Pastry Shop is a haven for sweet lovers. The man in red will also make an appearance, rounding it out to be a perfect family affair. Down in Somerset Village, the town is also getting into the festive

spirit. There will be plenty of opportunities to pick up the perfect gift, but head to Somerset Village on December 5 for a latenight shopping experience. Make the effort and take a drive to St George’s on the countdown to Christmas. Don’t just wait until the annual Bermuda Trust Christmas Walkabout, there is plenty to see and do every day of the week. Regular events in the town include Historical Re-enactments held Monday through Thursday at 12 noon to the delight of visitors and locals. Every Wednesday there are tours of the town and St Peter’s offers chapel tours every morning Monday through Friday at 10am. A favourite of locals is the vibrant Olde Towne Market which is held every Sunday from 2.00pm-6.00pm until December 22, 2013. Currently enjoying its ninth season, the Olde Towne Market is located on Water Street.

The only time the market does not operate is when there is inclement weather. With a variety of vendors and offerings to choose from, ranging from handmade jewellery to soaps, clothes to body oils, it’s the perfect opportunity to buy special gifts for family and friends. Many of the stores and restaurants located on Water Street open up especially during these times that the Olde Towne Market operates.

Entertainment

In addition to the unique vendors and stores, there is entertainment too, on any given Sunday you might hear a violin solo, guitarists/vocalist, see dancing or a street juggler!
