Join the volunteers keeping Bermuda beautiful Cosmetics company Garnier to sponsor KBB Spring Clean-up for a second year BY AMANDA DALE adale@bermudasun.bm
An international cosmetics brand is teaming up with an environmental charity to help keep Bermuda beautiful. Garnier, part of L’Oreal, will be sponsoring Keep Bermuda Beautiful’s (KBB) annual Spring Clean-up for a second year running. It is donating trash bags and T-shirts to volunteers who take part in the event, on Saturday, May 11.
Giveaways Distributor BGA will also be promoting Garnier’s hair and skincare products in stores in the coming weeks, with event sign-up sheets to get consumers involved. Staff will be handing out free giveaways including as facial cleanser brushes, reusable shopping bags, notebooks and magnets. Karen Oatley, BGA sales and marketing manager,
health and beauty, said: “L’Oreal’s Garnier tagline is ‘Take care’ and that comes across in everything. Garnier promotes healthy living — such as taking care of yourself and the environment — and healthy products.” This includes a biodegradable shampoo and conditioner, named Pure Clean, which contains no silicones, parabens or dyes. The containers are also made from 50 per cent recycled plastic. “We will also be highlighting Garner’s range of skincare products,” said Mrs Oatley. “They have several different kinds of skincare, ranging from young to old.” The giveaways and sign-up sheets will be available at retail outlets such as The Phoenix Stores, Lindo’s and The MarketPlace. “We aim to be a good corporate citizen and our

organization, and because Bermuda is so beautiful to everyone, people want to get out and help to take care of our island — to
keep it looking the way it should be. That’s really important. “Last year I was also really excited about the
number of young people who took part in the cleanup. “KBB really gives back to the community, and that’s what BGA is trying to do too.” Jenika McKinnie, BGA health and beauty brand manager, said: “This is or second year of involvement with Keep Bermuda Beautiful’s annual Spring Clean-up. “Garnier wanted to do a beach clean-up and so we joined with KBB. It went so well that we decided to do it again this year.” Last year’s KBB Spring Clean-up attracted hundreds of volunteers. 10 EASY STEPS
to save energy and money
Look after your fridge & freezer. Set your fridge to only as cold as you need. Fridges with an Energy Star label could save you much on energy costs. Always use the energy-saver setting. Also, defrost your freezer when it collects more than a oneeighth of an inch of ice.
Follow these 10 simple steps and you’ll save energy and money. Energy efficiency is key if we want to maintain a secure energy supply for the future, as well as minimise our global dependence on fossil fuels. Even small changes in energy usage can cause significant change. Best of all, your bills will be reduced. For

Set your water heater to 120° F.
Use your dishwasher efficiently.

Most of the energy used by your dishwasher goes to heating the water. Use your dishwasher only when it’s full and use the most energy efficient setting. Remember to scrape excess leftovers into your bin beforehand.
Use hot water wisely. Lowering the temperature just a few degrees can save a huge amount of energy. Set your water heater at 120° Fahrenheit. It’s hot enough for your dishwasher, washing machine and showers.

When replacing appliances, buy energy efficient ones. Efficiency is key when choosing an appliance. Energy Star appliances use less energy and save money. Whether you’re looking for a kitchen or home appliance, look for the Energy Star label.
Don’t air condition more than necessary.

Use your microwave for cooking. Microwave ovens cook food faster and require a lot less energy. They also produce less heat in your kitchen, which also means less energy needed for cooling.
Turn the lights off when you don’t use them.

Why pay for electricity when you don’t have to? The average Bermudian household wastes money every year on lighting empty rooms. If you leave the room, turn the lights off. Also, before you go to bed, make sure no lights are left on.
Use timers. Use CFLs and LEDs. The biggest electricity saver in your house could be a lightbulb. Switching from old-fashioned incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs can make a big difference in you electricity bill, and the new bulbs last a long time.

A timer can save you hundreds of dollars a year. It can give you hot water when you need it. Timers can also save energy for other items in your house. And turn your water heater off when you go on holiday.

More islanders want to take care of environment, says charity BY AMANDA DALE adale@bermudasun.bm
The number of islanders taking part in environmental clean-ups is increasing, according to the executive director of Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB). Anne Hyde is expecting community participation in this year’s KBB Spring Clean-up to increase from last year, when 325 people cleared 6.5 tons of trash from 28 locations. “We are expecting an increase in the number of participants for this year’s event,” said Ms Hyde.
Quality of life “We are seeing a big increase in the number of people who are volunteering from the community. “There is no special training or previous experience needed. “It’s a great way to spend time outside in the sunshine, and the results are seen right away. “It’s a great way to spend time with family and friends, and to do something good for Bermuda. “Also, students can earn credit for community service.” Garnier (L’Oreal) is the sponsors for this year’s

Other regular sponsors are John Barritt & Son Ltd, providing bottled water, and Butterfield & Vallis, who will hand out snacks and blue recycling bags. Government Works and Engineering plus Parks Department staff also team up with the City of Hamilton, Corporation of St George’s and WEDCo in the west end for the trash collection and pick-up. “KBB has served as a local leader in community improvement for nearly 50 years, collaborating with others to enhance our neighbourhoods and quality of life,” said Ms Hyde. “Our programmes are designed to engage and educate, and to instill an understanding and respect for our environment.” Last year KBB also rebranded and relaunched its KBB Adopt-A-Spot
Programme (formerly the Rockwatchers Programme). In under a year, 60 groups have joined it, ‘adopting’ beaches, parks, public docks, stretches of roads and parts of the Railway Trail. These groups of families, neighbours, school students, sports teams, businesses, and civic, religious and fraternal groups, make a commitment to keep their area litter-free, by engaging in periodic clean-ups. Twelve schools have adopted their local beaches. Ms Hyde said: “By engaging people of all ages and from all walks of life, we build a sense of community and pride in our neighbourhoods.” KBB will provide free bags and gloves to any group wanting to take part in this year’s Spring Cleanup. The charity has a list of suggested locations across the length of the island needing attention. After the May 11 event it will arrange for the trucking and removal of collected debris from each location. ■
