n CAR REVIEW / Hyundai i10

n PHOTO SUPPLIED

THE NEW HYUNDAI I10 is due in Bermuda at the end of April and will be available at the Auto Solutions showroom.

Stylish and spacious the unique Hyundai i10 BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

The new Hyundai i10 will have travelled a long way when it arrives on the island later this spring. But this unique and practical vehicle is likely to have undergone a very worthwhile journey if it takes off in the Bermuda market like the team at Auto Solutions hope it will once it makes it to the showroom. This new hatchback is both stylish and spacious, and the option of choosing between a wide choice of interior colour schemes allows you to put your own, individual signature on what has the potential to be one of the best bargains of the 2014 summer season. The new i10 is produced in India and is scheduled to hit these shores at the end of April. It is only going to be available at the Auto Solutions

showroom in Pembroke and has already been given a competitive and attractive price tag of just shy of $24,000 — $23,995, to be exact. This price tag relates to the standard model that comes with cloth or semi cloth interior, but if you are keen on the plusher leather and cloth combination interior alternative, then you are looking at a slightly dearer price and an extra $500. This new Hyundai hatchback comes in as a class C vehicle, so when it comes around to your birthday again you will be looking at dispensing something in the region of $562 (or $281 if you are a senior) to get your car licensed. An added bonus to this purchase is the new Hyundai 5-year warranty programme for all Hyundai vehicles that gives you peace of mind for the future as well as confidence in

your decision to shell out on a new car. The i10 is powered by an efficient 1.25litre engine, which ensures that this five-door machine is capable of handling the steepest of inclines with the minimum of fuss, no matter whether its occupancy is two or five.

Car of the year This hatchback claimed the title of Indian car of the year 2014 and it has been a big hit on the subcontinent. India’s magazine version of the hit British television show, Top Gear, stated: “Like other Hyundai’s, the Grand looks pretty to the eye. Swept-back headlamps and a big hexagonal grille with chunky fog lamps add zest to the front. “Sharp lines and the body moulding make sure the zest is carried through the profile of the Grand i10. “At the rear too, the styling is anything but bland. The large bumper wraps the

whole thing pretty neatly.” And there can be little doubt that the i10 offers more than enough acceleration and speed for the roads of Bermuda. Harry Andrews, sales and operations manager at Auto Solutions, told Ignition: “The Hyundai i10 has a much roomier cabin than you would expect and more cargo space, which has been made possible by the longer and wider dimensions of the car. “On top of this there is plenty of trunk space as well as all the safety features that you would expect of a state-of-the-art design. “The dual front air bags and the seat-belt tensioning system, combined with the back-up warning sensors, which are discretely built into the rear bumper, help to make this one of the safest hatchbacks on the road.” The British automotive magazine Auto Express has already branded this

THE BERMUDA SUN

vehicle a big success. In a recent review the publication stated: “Longer, wider and lower than before, the new i10 offers big car features in a small package, complemented by a driving experience that’ll make you think you’re driving a much bigger model.” The Hyundai i10 Sports is not just efficient and economical, it boasts electric windows in the front as well as power steering and the tilt steering option. The rear-parking sensors are complemented with keyless entry and the hill-start assist function. It also comes with what is rapidly becoming the ‘norm’ of a push button start and smart key that only has to be in the vehicle for the ignition to fire up. The impressive sound system, which allows you to access radio as well as your MP3 and iPod library through its four advanced speakers, provides an excellent in-house sound system. And if you are looking for a few little added

extras in this car then you might appreciate the glove box cooler, which keeps your drinks cold, as well as the Blue Tooth Voice Recognition system that operates in the car. The steering wheel remote controls helpfully allow you to access these features at the flick of a finger, as well as the stereo controls, ensuring you can keep your eyes on the road

and do not take your hands off the wheel when driving. This may be just a hatchback but one of the surprising features of this excellent car is the storage space available. The trunk space amounts to well over 250 litres, which means there is plenty of room for a big shop at the supermarket or even a trip to the beach with all the associated accessories.

MARCH 21, 2014 n 3

The i10 also comes with a rear roof spoiler, which has a stop lamp mounted on it, as well as front and rear mudguards. And it features the Electronic Stability Control System, which will initiate braking control over the wheels after detecting sudden manoeuvres, like stopping and sharp turns. This new Hyundai also offers power seats that can be manoeuvred by a push of a button as well as an effective air-conditioning system and dual air bags in the front of the vehicle. The Grand i10 comes in an array of funky colours including pure white, sleek silver, star dust, golden orange, silky beige, black, aqua blue, twilight blue, red passion and wine red. n

TO FIND out more about the new Hyundai i10 give Auto Solutions a call on 295-5000 or drop in at the dealership on St John’s Road in Pembroke and take this hatchback for a ride once it has arrived on the island.

n CAR REVIEW / Ford EcoSport

n PHOTO SUPPLIED

TALK TO ME: The EcoSport comes in two varieties, the EcoSport SUV Sport and the EcoSport SUV Titanium, with both models available at Bermuda Motors in Hamilton.

High tech EcoSport at your command BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

If you are looking for a companion in life (and on the road) as well as a car then the new Ford EcoSport could be the perfect purchase for you this year. Equipped with Microsoft Sync, you do not just drive the EcoSport, you can actually talk to the car. It may be just one feature in what is quite simply an incredible car, but it does blow your mind that you can bark commands like ‘play’ and ‘next track’ to this new Ford and its stereo system will shift seamlessly between your favourite music tunes. Microsoft Sync is quite an accessory, and I’m sure it would take a while before you get used to talking to an empty car as you drive to work in the morning. Sync can dial home, read

out your text messages, or browse and select music tracks. But it shows the stateof-the-art nature of this machine and how Ford has used cutting edge technology to craft its inception. The EcoSport arrived in Bermuda just before the turn of the year and can now be found on the showroom floors of Bermuda Motors in Hamilton.

Two varieties Built in Brazil, the EcoSport has been very successful in South America where it has sold 700,000 models since 2004. This Ford comes in two varieties; the EcoSport SUV Sport and the EcoSport SUV Titanium. Both cars have been classified as class G machines, but the Titanium will set you back an extra $4,000. The Standard Sport ver-

sion has been given a very reasonable price tag of $35,000 and you get plenty of bang for your buck with this SUV. The EcoSport is powered by a 1500cc engine and comes as an automatic vehicle with the option of step-tronic gear adjustment too. It boasts power steering and power wing mirrors as well as front and rear electric windows. And this Ford is equipped with central locking and child locks in the rear for extra safety and peace of mind for mum and dad. The stereo systems offers an impressive combination of sound quality as well as music source options, and the amazing onboard computer system is compatible with Bluetooth for your phone, iPod for your music, and USB and MP3. There are plenty of added

extras inside as well, from a wide range of cup holders to choose from to a cooled glove box and a sunglasses holder. The five-door EcoSport also comes with an adjustable steering column and steering wheel audio controls as standard.

Difference So the next question is what do you get for the extra $4,000; and what is the difference between the Sport model and the Titanium version? Well, with the Titanium model you get a few extra luxuries like the driver seat adjustable lumbar support and the driver seat arm rest. Then there is also the automatic climate air-conditioning feature and the leather seat option. There is also an eyecatching chrome exterior

grill and titanium badge to go with the rain-sensitive wipers and rear parking sensors. And just to finish off the Titanium package, the slightly dearer version of the EcoSport comes with alloy wheels. The added features for the extra money could be considered luxuries, but they are also fantastic accessories to an SUV that it is difficult to find fault with.

Family car But the EcoSport is not just about ticking all the boxes of what you would expect to get when you buy a brand new SUV. It is also about drive-ability and practicality, which means it is an ideal family car. It is smooth on the open road and light to manoeuvre into tight spaces. I took it out for a spin during the rush hour while Hamilton was being pummelled by torrential rain, and that did not detract from the driving experience. The interior is fresh

‘It is very difficult to find a fault with this SUV and you would be hardpressed to find a better car of this kind on the market at the moment.’ and crisp, while the sound of the outside world, let alone the 1.5-litre engine, can barely be heard above an extremely impressive sound system. The EcoSport is like a breath of tranquillity and calmness in an ever busier world. It is as if you set foot in this vehicle and you are suddenly transported away from the hue and cry of the town and into a little bubble where everyone is a little cleaner, a little quieter and basically a little nicer. Equally important to the overall package is that this car is easy to drive and

extremely comfortable to be in. There is plenty of space throughout the vehicle to fit all the added accessories that come with a modern family and a good-sized trunk as well. It is very difficult to find a fault with this SUV and you would be hard pressed to find a better car of this kind on the market at the moment. The Ford EcoSport comes in a wide range of colours including; diamond white, chill metallic, mars red metallic, sea grey pearl metallic, moon dust silver metallic, bright yellow, kinetic metallic, and pan-

ther black metallic. Big on comfort, power and safety, the EcoSport is small on fuel consumption. The 1-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-charged Eco Boost engine uses up to 20 per cent less fuel than a regular 1.6-litre, but is just as powerful, with full torque at 1,500 rpm. With 200 mm of ground clearance and high allround visibility, the EcoSport feels like a fullsized SUV from the inside too. Safety features include Hill Launch Assist, which stops the car from rolling back for a few seconds after you take your foot off the brake. The body is reinforced with high strength boron steel, and has front passenger and side airbags. n

n CAR REVIEW / Mahindra Reva e2o

Future has arrived with the fully electric e2o BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

A new electrical generation of vehicles has arrived in Bermuda. For the first time islanders who want to look after the environment and save money have the opportunity to buy an electrically-powered car. It’s not just a simple electrical machine; it’s a stateof-the-art vehicle boasting a surprising amount of interior space as well as accessories at the cutting edge of technology. This is the Mahindra Reva e2o, which has already taken the subcontinent by storm, and has the potential to transform the transport market here. The e2o originates in India and bringing it to Bermuda has been an 18-month project that has brought two Bermuda companies together. Bermuda Engineering has teamed up with Auto Solutions to get this vehicle into the Bermuda market. Bermuda Engineering bosses Alan Burland and Stuart Kriendler travelled to India at the end of last year to see first-hand how the car was built. Mr Burland said: “We have been promoting a whole new sustainable industry for Bermuda since 1997 and this trip was the culmination of years of research and development. “It was an incredibly positive experience to meet some of the finest people on the cutting edge of the most hi-tech sustainable solutions in the world.” Mr Kriendler took part in training exercises involving some of the most technically-advanced electric vehicles on the market. He said: “The cars have an advanced telematics system which allows them to connect to any smart phone and control everything from music and video choices to battery charging and air conditioning preferences.” The new e2o is a solely battery-run vehicle and

n PHOTO SUPPLIED

BATTERY-OPERATED: The new e2o is a solely battery run vehicle with a range of around 100 kilometres. The batteries have a three-year warranty or 60,000 kilometres, and can plug into any electricity source. requires little maintenance and is likely to offer owners significant savings. The batteries have a full warranty of three years or 60,000 kilometres and can plug into any electricity source. It takes just eight hours to fully charge up and once fully charged you’ll be able to drive ‘end-to-end’ in Bermuda three times. It offers efficiency and experts estimate the charge up will cost just $4.70. Furthermore, if you want to incorporate a solar system as well, then you are looking at $1.50 to operate the car and drive it 100km. Behind the figures is also a good-looking, durable and surprisingly spacious as well as comfortable little machine. You can ‘sync’ your phone with your car and activate the air conditioning 15 minutes before you get in it. The first batch of e2o vehicles arrived at the beginning of March, but there are already plans to bring in more. Mr Burland said: “This

‘Bermuda will be the first testing ground in the western world for the e2o . . .’ little car punches way above its weight. Bermuda will be the first testing ground in the western world for the e2o but it has already done very well in countries like Sri Lanka and India. “We are delighted to be involved with Auto Solutions to bring this electric car to the people of Bermuda. “This is the next generation of electrical automobiles and what is special about these is that they have been designed from scratch to be electrical.” The new e2o also comes with reversing camera that

sends an image to the central console so you can see how much space you have to spare. The bodywork is made from recycled parts ensuring that this is the ultimate green machine. The e2o has been given a $24,995 price tag, but this two-door also falls into the lowest licensing category of a class A vehicle so will also save you money when it comes to heading down to TCD for the annual test. Auto Solutions boss Glen Smith told Ignition: “For us, it is about providing customers with choice “And whether they want a diesel car, a gas car or electric car we, intend to be able to provide them with that choice. “The goal is also providing options that promote a more sustainable environment in Bermuda.” n

ECONOMICAL: The Hyundai Eon is expected to arrive at the end of May at Auto Solutions in Pembroke. A price tag of $14,995 is a major plus, along with the added bonus of being covered by the new Hyundai five-year warranty programme.

Hyundai Eon’s low price tag is sure to appeal BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

There is no getting away from the fact that there are still plenty of economic challenges for people in Bermuda at the moment. And at a time when islanders have to be careful with their pennies, Auto Solutions may have just the ticket if you are looking for a reliable, efficient and economical new car. As the driver’s manual suggests ‘good things come in small packages’ and this could not be truer than with the exciting and reasonably priced Hyundai Eon. This new hatchback is due to arrive in the Auto Solutions showroom in Bermuda in May and with a price tag of just under $15,000, this class A vehicle will not break the bank. And being a class A machine means that licensing time will only set you back something in the region of $288 for the year (or $142 if you are a senior), which again is a major reason why this vehicle would be a sensible and seriously

‘For people who are looking for a small class car at a very good price, well, this is the ideal car for them.’ HARRY ANDREWS Sales and operations manager at Auto Solutions

economical purchase. The Eon is set to be one of the cheapest ‘run-arounds’ on the market when it lands on the island at the beginning of the summer and it is well suited to Bermudians as well as expatriate workers. This new little Hyundai may fall into the lowest licensing category but it is still a well designed and smart-looking machine that has not made sacrifices in the space department. Its curves give it a sporty, youthful feel both inside and out, but it also offers great fuel efficiency at just shy of 21 km per litre;

another impressive moneysaving attribute. One of the more unique features of this smart hatchback is that it comes equipped with a manual gear box, which is another reason why it might appeal to guest workers who may have a little more experience with a stick shift.

Comfortable ride But the silky smooth, five-speed manual transmission offers an exciting and comfortable drive; and is unlikely to deter anyone who would rather be driving around in an automatic

car. And as the manufacturers say: “The Eon story is also about smart, efficient and ecological design starting with its remarkable power plant. Eon’s smart design extends to the generous interior space. “Its sporty interior design contributes to a spacious, comfortable feeling.” Harry Andrews, sales and operations manager at Auto Solutions, told Ignition: “This new Hyundai has eyecatching good looks and a generous interior space for a small-sized car. “The radio is a CD player as well as MP3 audio player. It is also equipped with input jacks to accommodate iPods, USB memory sticks or other types of personal music players. “And it comes with plenty of modern accessories like the keyless entry, central locking and front electric windows. “The Eon boasts a roomy trunk with 215 litres of trunk capacity, which is unexpected for a small See HYUNDAI EON page 9

HYUNDAI EON Continued from page 8 vehicle. For people who are looking for a small class car at a very good price, well, this is the ideal car for them.” This new hatchback is powered by an efficient 800cc or 0.8 litre engine, that offers enough acceleration and power for the island’s roads, and of course speed limits. The new generation of Hyundai engines are well known for their durability as well as the impressive power to weight ratio. And it is a five-door model, which can easily accommodate a family of four, with a little bit of space to spare in the back.

Manoeuvrability Its compact shape and squat stature make it easy to park and manoeuvre in tight spaces, but there is no sense of being cramped in either the front or the back. There’s a roomy glove box, front and rear seat cup holders as well as a map pocket and bottle holder; evidence that it has not had to sacrifice any of the usual ‘mod cons’ that you would expect from a new car because of its smaller size. The rear parcel shelf neatly divides the luggage space and the cabin; it is also a handy place to store items when you have nowhere else to fit them in. The driver’s position is comfortable and visibility to the front and rear is excellent. Plus, you have the option to tilt the steering wheel console to suit your ideal driving stance. Safety is also a strong suit for this new vehicle; the 13-inch ventilated front disc brakes and reliable rear drum brakes deliver impressive stopping power. The front driver side airbag modules used together with the seat belts help reduce the risk of serious injury. For safer braking the Eon is also fitted with a highmounted LED-type stop lamp that is built into the roof-mounted rear spoiler that also promotes aerody-

Side view mirrors and outside door handles feature body colour paint to ensure the overall colour scale of the car is seamless. In addition, a large-sized room lamp illuminates the whole cabin and a large rear view mirror provides excellent coverage and is fully adjustable. Mr Andrews added: “The Eon has an attractive interior that boasts a futuristic three-barrel gauge cluster featuring chrome rings and graphic bands. “There is also a full-size spare tyre in the back, as well as a jack and wrench all neatly tucked away in the trunk. “The Eon is produced in India and we expect our first car to arrive at the end of May. “Obviously the price of $14,995 is a major plus with this car and we expect it to do well in the Bermudian market.” The Eon comes in a range of colours including black, sleek silver, red, pristine blue, mushroom, coral white, clean blue and grey. An added bonus to this purchase is the new Hyundai five-year warranty programme for all Hyundai vehicles that gives you peace of mind for the future as well as confidence in your decision to shell out on a new car. n

n CAR REVIEW / Mini Hatchback

Impressive upgrade for the classic Mini BY SIMON JONES Sjones@bermudasun.bm

The word ‘smooth’ does not even begin to do justice to the ride that you get when you jump behind the wheel of the new Mini Hatchback. The car practically glides around corners and seamlessly shifts up and down the gear with barely a hint of a movement. It is not only one of the most striking cars to have arrived in Bermuda in the last few years, it is also spacious and luxurious on the inside. There have been a number of subtle changes to the older model that go a long way to making this one of the most complete packages on four wheels. But perfection, or near perfection, comes at a cost

‘This new version of an old classic is wider and has more internal space than its famous predecessors.’ and the cost for prospective buyers of this new five-door Mini is $65,000. This new version of an old classic is wider and has more internal space than its famous predecessors, and this has resulted in it moving up a class category into the class D category from the class C that it previously occupied. Having said that, the new Mini is still a two-door vehicle that has been opened up slightly on the inside to increase head and leg space.

There have been a few slight shifts of instruments which only a Mini expert would pick up, but the front interior has been given a noticeable and impressive upgrade. The electric window switches have migrated away from the central console and into the door panels. The automatic gear stick has taken on a more BMW design, while still offering the step-tronic option of shifting up and down through the gears.

There is a new pop-up lever for the hood on the driver’s side and the push button start option has moved position and joined a host of other little switches in the central dashboard that you nudge up and down to operate. But these cosmetic changes do nothing to detract from the incredibly satisfying sensation of starting up the Mini’s 1.5-litre engine and listening to it purr. The new Mini arrived in Bermuda at the end of February, having originated in the car manufacturing factories of Oxford in the UK. And when you are driving this mean little machine you cannot help but think of what it would be like to tear down country roads at speeds that the roads, and police, of Bermuda would

Just a gentle touch on the accelerator makes you want to ‘unleash the beast’ and see what this state-of-the-art piece of automotive technology is really capable of. But alas, you cannot do that here and you have to just accept that and move on, and appreciate all the other well thought-out features that you can make use of in this car like the luxurious black leather interior and the racing style steering wheel. Then there is the tried and tested, funky, juke-boxstyle centre console topped off by the big circular speedometer and bright orange illuminated radio display. There is also a new orange fuel display that runs around the side of the driver’s dashboard and sees little squares gradually go dark as you use up your gas.

Key disc Keyless entry comes as standard, but the innovative key disc also houses a driver’s side door that can be opened manually if anything was to ever happen to the electronic system. Space is a big factor in the new Mini; in a nutshell, there seems to be much more of it throughout the car, whether it is above your head or in front of your knees. You can feel

‘It has all the personality and performance people love in a Mini but by making it just that touch bigger, it creates a much more spacious interior yet retains that sporty small-car feel.’ MICHAEL BUTLER General manager of Bermuda Motors

it in the front especially where there are extension panels on the seats that provide more support for taller drivers or passengers. Michael Butler, general manager of Bermuda Motors, told Ignition: “It’s a bold move for Mini. Going forward, all the classic twodoor models will be longer and wider. It uses the same chassis as the four-door Mini Countryman and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, which will be launched later this year. “It has a great new 3-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine as well as a number of new features such as the wide touch screen menu on the control panel, and optional driving modes that optimize throttle response for better

fuel efficiency when you are driving in the city, for example. “It has all the personality and performance people love in a Mini but by making it just that touch bigger, it creates a much more spacious interior yet retains that sporty small car feel.”

Stop-start The new Mini comes with the economic automatic stop-start function that sees the engine cut out when you come to a stop. This is perhaps more useful abroad on longer journeys when you are stuck in traffic jams for long periods of time, rather than Bermuda where it can become more of an annoyance than anything else.

It is therefore fortunate that you can disable the function with a simple flick of a switch in the central console. When you are actually behind the wheel, the driver’s position is comfortable as well as lofty and you will be surprised by just how close you are to the front windscreen. But that is not a negative feature, it is a positive and adds to the traditional racing sensation of driving a Mini. The Mini is supposedly based on the premise that ‘you simply do things differently from everyone else’ and the pioneers of this famous vehicle would not be disappointed in the new model. It is a crisp, smooth performer that is exhilarating to drive. It is the kind of car that you take out for a drive simply because you want to go out for a drive. You do not need a reason to take this machine for a spin; it’s just a great experience to get behind the wheel. n

TO FIND out more about the new Mini you can call Bermuda Motors on 292-0893 or drop in at the dealership on Church Street in Hamilton and take it out for a test drive — you will not be disappointed.

n CAR REVIEW / Nissan Juke

Aggressive sports styling gives Juke an edge BY SIMON JONES sjones@bermudasun.bm

Sharp on the outside and comfortable on the inside, the new Nissan Juke packs plenty of punch for what has been described as a ‘mini’ SUV. Its distinctive slopes and curves make it easy on the eye and give this machine a fresh and vibrant beachbuggy appearance. But it is not just about the look when it comes to the Juke; its funky shape is complemented by a robust and reliable design that car owners have come to expect from a Nissan It is a lot of fun to drive; it looks great from the pavement but it also has the functionality and practicality that make it an ideal car for a young couple or even a family of four.

Versatile The Juke’s versatility is one of its many strong attributes, but it does not sacrifice anything when it comes to comfort or performance. This new Nissan arrived in the showroom of Auto Solutions at the beginning of the year in January, and has the potential to put a spring back in the island’s once flourishing SUV market. The Juke has been priced at a very reasonable $39,995 and has been classified as a class F vehicle, costing $1,127 to license (or $562 if you are a senior). And it comes with a two-year warranty from the dealership as well. On the inside the Juke boasts the popular push button start, which basically means that you only have to have the keys inside the vehicle to fire up the ignition. It comes with electric windows in both the front and the back. There are six airbags throughout the car in the front, side and curtain of the car, which makes this one of the safest machines on the road. This five-door model comes with an automatic

ATTITUDE: The Nissan Juke, with its cockpit-like seating, is a very responsive and versatile vehicle that can be seen at Auto Solutions in Pembroke. transmission and has the seating capacity for up to five passengers as well as a decent-sized trunk space for all sorts of family junk. The back seats, which are divided on a 60-40 split, can also fold down to provide extra space. One of the hidden gems of this machine is actually its trunk; not only is it a great sized space, but also the bottom folds up to reveal a bucket-like plastic well for tools and anything else you care to put in it.

Plush interior The Juke boasts a plush, cosy, stitched-leather interior, which also spreads into the steering wheel, and the chrome finish gives the interior a really crisp feel. The CD and radio sound system offers not just great sound quality thanks to the six-speaker layout of the car but it is also extremely easy to access from the driving position. And you can plug your MP3 player into the sound system so you can play all your favourite tunes. Air-conditioning and auto folding mirrors come as standard with the Juke, and

it also comes equipped with an alarm and immobilizer. The internal driver’s side dashboard is simple and straightforward and there is also a central computer style control system that gives you all sorts of driving information from fuel economy to trip details. Meanwhile on the outside the Juke’s sturdy, yet snazzy shape is complemented by smart 17-inch alloy wheels and a powerful fourcylinder, 1.6 litre engine.

Delivery Auto Solutions can order the Juke from the UK direct and bring it across to Bermuda from the US. When it comes to driving, the Juke ticks all the boxes. Being an SUV, the driver’s position is naturally just above most of the cars on the road which gives you great visibility. The Juke is slightly more compact than most SUVs on the island at the moment, so it is easy to park and manoeuvre into tight spaces. But the 1.6 litre engine means that it lacks nothing when it comes to acceleration and performance. The

Juke glided up Berkeley Hill when I took it out for a test drive. There is plenty of ‘pep’ at your feet and control at your hands when you are out on the road in the Nissan Juke. And the Juke is a thoroughly comfortable ride whether you are up front or in the back. Harry Andrews, sales and operations manager at Auto Solutions, told Ignition: “The Nissan Juke boasts aggressive sports styling and masculine crossover styling that provides higher ground clearance to inspire confidence. “It is a very responsive vehicle, too. The centre console has been designed to look like a sports motorcycle tank while also supporting the driver’s knee during cornering. “The high-eye position of the driver increases visibility and the cockpit-like seating makes for excellent control and quick response.” n

n CAR REVIEW / Kia Cerato

n PHOTO SUPPLIED

GOOD LOOKS: Kia have given the new Cerato a more refined and dynamic design which could prove even more popular with families and professionals than the old version.

Refined Cerato is sleek and sophisticated BY SIMON JONES Sjones@bermudasun.bm

Kia has already made a big impact on the Bermuda car market, and the previous Cerato proved to be a big hit with a large number of islanders, especially young families and professionals. The newer model, which has all the bells and whistles that the old version boasted, and plenty more, could take the popularity of this innovative and safetyconscious brand name to a whole new level. It is not just that this is an incredibly good-looking, comfortable, and practical car to drive, but it is the fact that it also comes up trumps on the two important e-words; it is economic and efficient. The new

Cerato’s advanced lighting systems are just a taste of the many innovations that can be found inside and outside of this new vehicle that arrived on the island for the first time at the end of February. This latest Kia model sports LED daytime running lights that help ensure safety as well as LED rear combination lights that provide high visibility at night. The headlamps also emit a distinctive ‘blue hue’ projection that lights up more of the road when you are driving. There is also an array of smart, welcome-home lighting on the interior and exterior that is synchronized with the vehicle’s smart key to light up the vehicle and welcome you into your car. The smart key itself pro-

vides central and remote locking, and only has to be in the car for the push-button ignition to be engaged. The push-button start unleashed a powerful and efficient 1.6-litre engine that comes in either automatic or manual. Or, if you want to choose a little more power, then you can opt for the 2-litre version of the new Cerato that just comes with an automatic transmission.

Sensors This new model comes with front and back sensors, and just in case you wanted a visual of your manoeuvre, then the camera image is also displayed on the central dash computer screen so you can see just how much space you have to play with. There is also a

function that allows you to turn off the sound of the beeps if you would rather just take on the move from a visual perspective on the screen. The leather interior is pristine and crisp and complemented by the internal illuminations as well as the external chrome finish. It exudes style and class, while still retaining the family feel. The very nature and size of this car means you don’t feel like you are spoiling it by having it as a family car full of biscuit crumbs and baby toys. It is durable and practical, and retains a certain degree of grace and class owing to the internal accessories and external curves. When it comes to accessories and features the

DYNAMIC DESIGN: The new Cerato comes with a price tag of $39,500 and can be seen at Bermuda Motors in Hamilton. new Cerato wants for little. There are front and rear electric windows, rear child looks to ensure the safety of the adventurous little ones, and a steering wheel packed full of stereo controls and Bluetooth functions. Meanwhile, the central dashboard relays vital statistics such as outside temperature and time. There are also USB and AUX points in a small compartment in front of the automatic gear stick that can be covered from view. The new Cerato boasts remote folding wing mirrors that fold up as well as in, so they are not knocked off while parked on the side of the road. And there are arm rests up from for the driver and passenger as well as a central armrest that can be shared. There is a spacious glove box and cup holders for the morning cup of coffee on the way to work and a spectacular CD and radio stereo system that boasts both front and rear speakers. Up front the seats are comfortable and provide an excellent perspective of the road and visibility of what lies ahead. There is also a surprising amount of leg space in the back.

‘The Cerato is Kia’s best-selling car worldwide and we certainly think it’s among the best-designed and most comfortable compact sedans in the Bermuda market.’ MICHAEL BUTLER General manager of Bermuda Motors

The back seats themselves are split 60-40 and can flip down to expand what is already a well proportioned trunk space, that also comes complete with a secreted, full-sized spare tyre and wheel change equipment. Another nice new feature of this latest Kia model is the AC vents that have now also migrated into the back as well as the front. On the outside the Cerato sports killer curves that make it look more like a sports car than a family sedan, and the 17-inch alloy wheels provide excellent grip as well as an attractive finishing touch. This comfortable and smooth class H vehicle

comes with a price tag of $39,500 and is on the showroom floors of Bermuda Motors right now. It is a lot of fun to drive, but has plenty of practical accessories that make it ideal for the blossoming family as well as the young professional.

Safety But having said that, the safety features and reliability of the Kia brand also make this an attractive prospect for the middle-aged to senior bracket of the population. Its versatility should help this snappy machine become a big hit on the roads of Bermuda.

Michael Butler, general manager of Bermuda Motors, said: “With the new Cerato, Kia has given it a much more refined and dynamic design. The smoother roofline, longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs at the front and rear give it a much sleeker and sophisticated look and more space inside. “It also includes some nice luxury features like LED front and rear lights, more ergonomic options for the power-assisted driver’s seat, rear backup camera, and a better layout for dashboard and steering wheel controls. “The Cerato is Kia’s best-selling car worldwide and we certainly think it’s among the best-designed and most comfortable compact sedans in the Bermuda market. “And of course, like all Kia cars, it comes with a five-year warranty on parts and labour and we also offer fixed-price servicing on all our Kia models.” n

TO FIND out more about the new Kia Cerato you can call Bermuda Motors on 292-0893 or drop in at the dealership on Church Street in Hamilton and take it out for a test drive.
