Need a good reason to get out and get some fresh air with your family this summer? Summer Sundays in the Park is back and the perfect excuse for a relaxing day in the park. Of course, great music, food and entertainment will be featured, with Lift Your Voice –– a gospel-themed event kicking off the party on May 4. The SDA Inspirational Choir, dancers and popular artists such as Bermuda Idol winner Olivia Hamilton and Sia are currently scheduled for the event. “This is our sixth year and it keeps growing in popularity,” says Thomas Lightbourne, event and marketing coordinator at the Corporation of Hamilton. “It’s been a very popular event and we are starting to see the demo-
graphic change as we start to engage younger performers.”
First Sunday of the month Throughout the summer, the event, which takes place in Victoria Park from 3pm-8pm the first Sunday of every month until September, will feature reggae artists as well as soul and R & B and good, old Rock ’n’ Roll. There will also be a children’s area, featuring fun castles and face painting. “Bring a blanket and a chair and come on out and expect the unexpected,” says Mr Lightbourne. n

How cool would it be to build your own robotics during the summer break? If you have a proven aptitude for science, technology, engineering and maths, and find the idea of building your own challenging robotics fascinating, look no further than the STEM Camp offered by the Ascendant Group. Facilitated by engineers from BELCO and iEPC, along with developing robotics, students will also immerse themselves in HTML projects and gain knowledge in problem-solving, critical thinking and research skills. “The students will gain STEM confidence and competence, as they are encouraged to think about solving critical problems for the island and the Earth,� says a company spokesperson.

For campers with and without special needs, WindReach Explorer’s Camp has a variety of activities to keep children of all abilities busy throughout the summer. Set on the four-acre property in Warwick, the WindReach facility features a petting zoo, nature zone and pond, and a fully accessible playground.
Water park On Fridays, the playground gets turned into a special water park to help campers cool down after a busy week of activities. “Children at the camp can be involved in a ton of different activities without leaving the property,” explains Erica Fulton, WindReach’s executive director. “We also provide a much

As well as being an amazing form of self-expression, dance is also a great stress relief and a way to lead a healthy lifestyle. For those looking for a taster of what a dance class is all about, the Jackson’s School of Performing Arts will be holding two styles of summer camp in July and August.
July camp The July camp focuses on ballet, modern and jazz, and will also feature lessons in creative movement, choreography, yoga, dance history and stage makeup, taught by Brittany Adams and Emily Polasik.
August camp The August camp, taught by Angelina Simas (Ms Angie), will feature hip-hop and break dancing as well as ballet, jazz and modern.
Campers will also be treated to theme days, including a slumber party and princess days. “This is a great way for a child who wants to start dancing but might be intimidated to try out dance for the first time,” says Jeanne Legere, managing director of Jackson’s. “It’s also great for those dancers who want to try out a different medium of dance.” Should children want to continue with dance in the fall, the school offers beginners classes for all ages. Mrs Legere says she sees dance bring out the star in children who appear shy. “Dance is a great release of emotions and everyday stresses,” she says. “It’s also a great way to make friends.” n

Sailing has such rich history on the island and the Junior Summer Programme at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club is aiming to get more young people out and enjoying the water to continue on that maritime heritage. “Our priorities with the Junior Sailing programme are safety, fun and developing a love of sailing,” explains Neil Redburn, RHADC vice commodore. The programme starts children early to build an appreciation for the sport, as well as confidence on the water. “We take safety very seriously and all of our instructors are certified sailing instructors as well as CPR and first-aid qualified,” Mr Redburn adds. Sailors can test out the waters in a variety of boats as they become more comfortable with the water and include Optimists, Open Bics, and 420s, and Lasers for the older, more experienced sailors. The programme begins with children as young as
five years old with Water World. “Water World introduces the younger kids to safety, being comfortable on the water and being confident about getting into the boats and the kids advance depending on the maturity of each child,” Mr Redburn says. The Learn to Sail introduction programme is the next step, which teaches more detailed information about the sport. Sailors then advance to Level 1 and Level 2 where more complex sailing techniques are taught. The Junior Sailing Programme is based on the US Sailing curriculum and the hope is to get more younger people out on the water in Bermuda. “The programme is open to kids from all different backgrounds and you don’t have to be a RHADC member to sign up,” Mr Redburn says. The summer programme runs from June 30 until August 29 with a variety of options to choose from including half-day and full-day programmes depending on age. RHADC does offer Junior Membership rates, which

Along with an after-school junior programme, the club also has a racing team, appropriately named Team RHADCal. Because the club feels safety is such a huge part of running a successful junior programme, there is a Child Protection Policy in place and the instructors have recently been trained with SCARS — who train individuals and organizations to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. n

Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association Learning to swim opens a whole new world of pure joy. “Darrell’s Island Aquatic Programme Summer 2014” — held by the BASA teaches swimming lessons for beginners and improvers in six week sessions starting July 1 and ending the week of August 16 (Cup Match week off). All Day Program — the children travel by the ‘Friendship’ ferry from
Albuoys Point to the island at 8.35am and return at 5pm (these are the only boats to and from the island each day). Swimmers must arrive at Albuoys Point 15 minutes before departure time. Swimmers must be picked up promptly once the ferry returns to shore, or have written permission to leave the dock. A barbecue lunch is provided each Friday. Cost of programme: $150 per week. Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club This will be the thirteenth year of their very successful Summer Sailing Programme. This year they will offer the US Sailing Programme curriculum with their team of US Sailing Instructors. The classes are divided up by age, weight and/or skill from 5 years old to teenagers, the courses are in Optis ages 5 to 15, Open Bics ages 12 and up, 420’s ages 14 and up. Introduction to Boys Hip Hop Dance Camp September 2 to 5 (6 to 9 years.) What a great way to find out if your son would like to start a dance class. The Jackson School already has over 20 boys at the school, with the older ones having performed at the National Trust Christmas Walkabout, the Agricultural Show and late night shopping in Hamilton. Along with hip hop, the boys will be offered arts and crafts, performance skills and games to enhance their agility. Somerset School of Dancing In addition to our ‘Summer Fun’ camp, this year we will be offering a three week intensive course from August 5 to 23 with renowned ABT certified teacher Richard Bowman: ‘Ballet with Bowman’.
Our Summer Fun camp runs for two weeks, 9am until 3pm, Monday to Friday from July 1 to 5 and July 8 to 12. Your young ones (open to ages 5 to 12 years) will enjoy everything from ballet and jazz to theatre, singing, hair and make-up, and arts and crafts. After camp care will be available for these two weeks only (3pm to 5.30pm). Our August Intensive ‘Ballet with Bowman’ is a unique opportunity to learn with one of the best in the dance world. Animal Friendly WindReach Bermuda’s Explorers’ Summer Camp will be held during the month of August on their four-acre facility which includes a fully accessible playground, petting zoo, therapeutic riding centre, environmental zone, and an air conditioned activity centre. Bermuda Zoological Society Aqua Camps, run by the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS), are week long, fullday (9am to 3pm) learning camps which give children the opportunity to have positive experiences learning about nature. They offer hands-on education, field trips, arts and crafts, and zoo/aquarium visits and are based at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ). The camps are divided into age groups based on the child’s current year in school. All activities are geared for the appropriate age group. ‘World Without Fish’ children will learn about the threats the world’s oceans are facing. Under the water Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) Educational and fun summer camps for 7 to 13 year olds. Continuing their popular “Dabble in” themed camps, these educational camps are hands-on, involving labs, experiments, specimens, videos, interactive computer activities, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, playacting and competitions. Conducted in the Sea Below Classrooms, Exhibits, Link Wet Lab and Lobbies, the camps are mainly science in nature, but the activities incorporate other disciplines and emphasize the role Bermuda plays in these areas where possible. The programmes integrate literacy and numeracy, and are designed to inform, motivate and excite

Dabble in Prehistoric Seas: July 14 to 18 This five-day educational camp ‘starts’ at the birth/ creation of earth over 4½ billion years ago. Travelling through simulated time, students get up close and personal with the variety of life in the savage prehistoric seas ranging from the Cambrian to the Quaternary periods of the geological time scale. Through videos, computers, fossil labs and other unique hands-on activities, students learn about the dominant inhabitants of each major period, what survived and what caused major extinctions, and where Bermuda fit into the scheme of the prehistoric seas. Students will make moulds/casts of some of the “key” marine fossils of the past such as mosasaur teeth, ammonites, and trilobites, as well as excavate, analyze and interpret real fossil remains like palaeontologists. New camp! Dabble in Wild Weather: August 25 to 29. From mega-hurricanes, super storms, multi-vortex tornadoes to derichios, haboobs and huge storm surges, this five-day camp immerses the students into the causes, effects and impacts of global warming. Through incredible videos, hands-on activities, and realistic computer interactives, students engage in the understanding of the global changes, meteorological related events and catastrophes occurring in the environment. Students learn what they can do about it, to mitigate as well as prepare for the possible impacts to Bermuda. Camp participants make and test, in a lab and outdoors, their own take-home UV light detecting bracelets. The motto is: “Don’t be scared, be prepared!” Dabble in Dissection: July 21 to 25. A five-day educational camp introducing six very different unique invertebrate creatures: sponge, Hydra, segmented worm, clam, sea star and crayfish.
Students learn how special and well adapted these creatures are to their environment and the important role they play in the ocean. As they get “up close and personal” to each specimen they are taught safe and proper lab skills utilizing microscopes and dissecting tools. An overview is given of each organism’s phyla inclusive of alerting the students of the related dangerous or venomous members. Due to the nature of this camp, students must be 9 to 13 years old. Dabble in Pirates: July 28 – 30. This three-day educational, hands-on camp dwells in the realm of piracy as it deals with the different types of pirates, the most famous ones and the pirates

that were involved with Bermuda’s early history. From the past days of the Spanish Main and the Barbary Coast to today’s pirate havens of the world, students have fun as they are immersed in the pirate’s code of conduct, shipboard life, jolly rogers, gold doubloons and pieces of eight. Among the many camp activities are “Divide the Booty” and “How Did the Pirate Ship Sink?”, where students work with real artefacts and treasures as well as play an authentic pirate game of chance. The camp will cover everything one needs to know about sharks from a shark research, shark attack behaviour, sharks past and present, and the importance of the Sargasso Sea to some shark’s reproduction. It will entail an in depth dissection, identifying various prehistoric shark teeth, painting large 3.5 inch cast, Carcharodon megalodon teeth, and constructing a take-home 6-gilled shark “beanie” baby. Dabble in Bermuda: August 4 to 8. This five-day educational camp focuses on the beautiful waters and their relation- ship to a unique, special, island, Bermuda! Utilizing hands-on activities and videos, students learn about Bermuda’s violent birth, its past based on ancient submerged cedar forests, marine fossils and Bermuda’s geological future. From a shipwreck caused inhabitation to 17th century maritime Bermuda and what hard- ships did the first settlers endure? What were some of the most famous and valuable shipwreck finds? Students paint their own Teddy Tucker Cross cast replica and receive their own micro-paleontological slide to, collect their own microcritters and make their own sand collections. From whales, sharks, seashells, flotsam and jetsam, Sargasso Sea and the Bermuda Triangle, students learn about the mysteries of Bermuda, its beaches and surrounding ocean! Dabble In Sea Myths, Sea Serpents, and Superstitions: July 7 to 11 and August 18 to 22. Delve in the interesting world of ocean mythology, sea legends, sea monster sightings and seamen’s superstitions. Ever since mankind began exploring

From mysterious sea serpent accounts, ghost ship discoveries, sinking of Atlantis and the calling of the Sirens, students explore the facts and fiction behind past legends and folklore. Using hands-on activities, educational websites, accounts of survivors and videos, students become myth busters as they enter the realm of Greek mythological gods and tales such of Jason and the Argonauts and Sinbad the Sailor and the seven seas. Dabble In Whales: June 26 to 27. This educational camp explores the world’s largest mammals and immerses campers into the whales’ relationship to mankind and the present efforts to conserve them. Hands-on and interactive, this camp involves tracking satellite tagged whales, identifying the different types of whales and their behaviours, and learning the history of whaling of the past, present and in Bermuda. From carving scrimshaw to making sailor’s valentines, identifying whale sounds to being updated on the current whale studies conducted in Bermuda, campers become whale aficionados. Dabble In Disaster: June 30 to July 4. Natural disasters can occur at any time, anywhere. This eye opening camp consists of marine related disasters involving geological forces such as volcanoes, earthquakes, underwater avalanches, meteor impacts, as well as meteorological events such as hurricanes, tornadoes/ water spouts, global warming, and sea level rise. Students learn various past natural disasters through videos, computers, meteorological and geological instruments as well as hands-on activities including those affecting Bermuda and how to predict, prepare and act where possible. Activities Camp PlaySkillz Summer Camp Offers a programme that incorporates educational activities in the mornings to stimulate and reinforce continuous learning throughout the summer months for the kids, respective to their age groups.
