FIFA WORLD CUP 2014 A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT OF THE BERMUDA SUN JUNE 2014 PAGE 1

hat more could we football fans want? A World Cup in Brazil — the spiritual home of the game — promises to be the ultimate. A country whose people worship at the game’s altar JAMES and value BURTON its skills and showSun journalist manship arguably more than any other nation. It helps, of course, that Brazil has such a rich football history and is the home of the likes of Garrincha, Zico, Tostão, Carlos Alberto, Romário, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho... Oh, and
there’s the small matter of Pele, arguably the greatest player of all time. The backdrop to the tournament will be the parties and beaches of Rio, for example, while there are a few thrilling trips into the Amazon for some fans to look forward to. Unwittingly, though, the World Cup is also likely to bring the country’s social and economic problems to the attention of the wider world: something that should not be ignored. I hope the following pages provide you with an enjoyable preview of the tournament. In particular, check out the team guides and the fillin chart, in which you can plot the path of your favourite team. Enjoy. n

Ready for the big kick-off?
Troubled build-up but Brazil World Cup is also a dream for fans BY JAMES BURTON jburton@bermudasun.bm
O
n the surface, a World Cup in Brazil is an irresistible blend of samba skills, beaches and beautiful fans (just watch the TV editors hone in on them at every throw-in!). There will, of course, be plenty to enjoy over the coming month. But there is a serious undercurrent to the 2014 World Cup as evidenced by the social unrest among those who see the tournament as an expensive vanity project undertaken at the expense of dealing with the country’s problems of crime, poor education and housing, to name just a few. Reports of irregularites and alleged corruption in the budgeting of the event and the building of brand-new stadiums has left people angry. That some stadiums were so far behind deadline and a number of workers lost their lives in their construction has added to the fury, the general feeling of chaos and the intensity of the street protests. So it has not been a buildup without controversy and the accusation is that the Government and organizers have neglected domestic issues for a World Cup ego trip. It appears, contrary to cliche, that not every Brazilian is a football fan. But despite all these issues, it’s hard as a lover of the game not to feel childlike excitement at a World

Can Neymar deliver for expectant home nation? Y
ou’re at home, you are your country’s supposed legend in waiting and you wear #10, just like a certain Pele. No pressure, then. The above scenario is, though, exactly where Barcelona’s Neymar is at the moment. His club-mate Dani Alves was at pains to talk up the 22-year-old’s chances of being the hero this summer. “Neymar is superbly talented and had a good season,” he said. “You have to remember that he was playing his first
season in Europe and Spain is not an easy country to make your debut. “Barcelona have a unique style of football. You have to adapt to it and it takes quite some time. But Neymar did not take much time to fit into the team, basically because of his technical excellence and tactical awareness. “At this tender age, this kind of maturity on the field is quite rare. That is why we all know he is special and he will show the same in the World Cup.”
Ronaldo, the winner of two World Cups (1994, 2002) with Brazil, believes the nation’s latest pin-up is ready to embrace the biggest stage of them all. “Brazil are entering the World Cup with much more confidence than we had when we entered the World Cup in 2002,” Ronaldo said. “I believe that the squad we have for 2014 is really strong. We have a balanced team, full of a lot of talent. Neymar is a fantastic kid, so talented, he is our great hope for the future.” n

THE BERMUDA SUN
From Brazil wonder goal W
orld Cups past are littered with memorable incidents etched into the annals of football history. So on the eve of Brazil 2014, here are a few examples of goals, sending-offs and celebrations that are synonymous with their specific year. Come on, as if you forgot Roger Milla’s corner flag jig...
1970 Carlos Alberto’s stunning goal Widely regarded as one of the best team goals in history — and it came in the final. A total of eight Brazil outfield players touched the ball before Pele laid off an inch-perfect pass to captain Carlos Alberto, who hammered the ball into the corner of the Italy goal. The move featured defender Clodoaldo beating four Italian players in his own half before passing to Rivelino, who hit a perfect pass down the wing to Jairzinho. Jairzinho crossed to the centre of the box to Pelé, and the rest has gone down in football immortality. Brazil won 4-1 to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy for the third time and earn the right to keep it. n
1982 Marco Tardelli’s goal celebration Italians are nothing if not emotional and dramatic. But there was something particularly raw and wild about Tardelli’s reaction to scoring in the final against West Germany to help Italy win the game 3-1. After putting his side 2-0 up, Tardelli, with tears in his eyes, sprinted towards the Italian bench, fists clenched in front of his chest, screaming “Gol! Gol!” as he shook his head wildly. The iconic celebration would become known as the “Tardelli cry”. The ecstasy that came over the Italian’s face may have something to do with the fact he was a defensive midfielder — albeit a technically very good one — who’s game was based around his ability to break up play. But there he was, scoring a decisive goal on the greatest stage of all. Tardelli scored only six goals in 81 games for the national team. He also won five Serie A titles but it is for this celebration that he is best remembered. n

to Zidane’s mad moment 1986 Maradona’s Hand of God
World Cup records
Mention this to an England fan to this day and they are likely to give you a dirty look before spitting on the ground. Steve Hodge’s miscued clearance went high in the air and Maradona jumped with keeper Peter Shilton, beating him to it with his left hand and scoring. The referee saw no infringement and awarded the goal. Afterwards came Maradona’s Goal of the Century that saw him run half the pitch and beat four players before rounding Shilton to score. Argentina won 2-1 and advanced to the semi-final. Maradona’s explanation that he scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God” did little to appease furious England. n
1990 Roger Milla’s jiggle Not only was Milla ancient — he was 38 but went on to play in USA 1994 and become the oldest player to grace the World Cup — but he also had the most rhythm. Whenever he scored, and it happened four times during the tournament in Italy, Milla would race to the corner flag, clasp one hand to his stomach and the other in the air, and get his hips moving. Result: an instant fans’ favourite and one of the most enduring goal celebrations in history. Milla’s most-replayed goal was undoubtedly his strike against Colombia, where he dispossessed keeper Rene Higuita on the half-way line before striding away to slot home. The striker’s 102 caps for his country spanned 21 years in a remarkable career that also saw him play for a raft of clubs in France and in his native country. However, ask the average football fan about Milla and they will instinctively re-enact that corner flag jig. n
2006 Zidane butts in No-one is doubting Zinedine Zidane’s legendary status — and no-one ever doubted his ability to look after himself. Raised in a notoriously-tough neighbourhood in Marseille, Zidane’s place in history was already assured with his starring role in France’s World Cup win in 1998 and 2000 European Championship. Unfortunately for him, he is also remembered for his sending off during the loss, in a penalty shootout, to Italy in the 2006 World Cup final. Zidane had put his team ahead with an early penalty before Italy’s Marco Materazzi equalised. The two weren’t done. With 10 minutes of extra-time remaining, Materazzi said something to Zidane — reported to be about the Frenchman’s mother. Zidane turned around and headbutted the Italian full-on in the chest, knocking him over and earning a red card. There is even a statue dedicated to the moment. n

A number of players have been there and done that — and are back for more. Samuel Eto’o, 33, will play in his fourth World Cup for Cameroon, while Tim Cahill, 34, will lead the Socceroos’ hopes. FIFA WORLD CUP 2014 / ENGLAND & USA
THE BERMUDA SUN
Low key suits Three Lions E
ngland’s lead-up to the World Cup has made headlines for the fact it isn’t providing any. The squad was met with a quiet shrug and general approval from fans, while the usual feverish (and often unrealistic) expectation levels are currently at an all-time low. The so-called Golden Generation have been and gone and the new breed are, on paper, at least, less inspiring. Plus, there is also a general understanding that the group and the conditions will make things tough for Roy Hodgson’s men. The back-line picks itself now the omitted Ashley Cole has been sent into retirement, while the younger elements of the squad — Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Ross
Barkley — show hope for the future. Perhaps the one issue that is growing in the press is the form and value of Wayne Rooney, for so long the barometer of England success. Rooney knows this is probably his last chance to shine at a big international tournament but there is a nagging suspicion he is now past his best. That will fuel the striker, no doubt, who has the faith of Hodgson, but one suspects the more clinical goal threat will come from Daniel Sturridge, who enjoyed a superb season at Liverpool. He is, too, unburdened by past failures and England fans will hope his confidence rubs off on Rooney in what is likely to be the firstchoice strike pairing. n

Donovan upset at axe ejected soccer star D Landon Donovan thought he was good
enough to play in the 2014 World Cup, and perhaps even start. When asked if he thought coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s controversial decision was personal, Donovan said: “I think if I’m being judged based solely on what happened in camp, then I absolutely deserved to be going to Brazil.” Donovan spoke to a group of reporters a day before his Los Angeles Galaxy was scheduled to play host to the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer action. Donovan, 32, sounded as if he didn’t understand Klinsmann’s reasoning for passing him over. “I think I was at least as good as everybody else in camp,” Donovan said. “I think you guys that know me well know I’m pretty honest when it comes to my assessment. hen Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace in Portugal’s 4-2 win in Northern Ireland, he bettered Eusebio’s Portuguese tally of goals. The current Real Madrid star had 43 compared to Eusebio’s 41. Since then, Ronaldo has added five more and become his country’s highest scorer. Following his feat, the question was asked countless times in Portugal if Ronaldo could now be considered their greatest ever footballer. The country remained divided. So did Eusebio prior to his death earlier this year. “It makes no sense to say something like that,” Eusebio said at the time. “I scored 41 goals in 64 matches while Ronaldo needed 106 matches. “How many goals would I have scored in those matches? I never played against Azerbaijan or Liechtenstein. It is easier now and that’s why he is
LEGEND: The late Eusebio is revered in Portugal. scoring so many goals.” The Real Madrid star preferred not to get dragged in. “I’m really happy after having taken over those records held by the likes of Eusébio, one of Portugal’s greats,” Ronaldo said. Nani, another Portuguese national team star, stressed that it was “impossible to compare Eusébio and Ronaldo as they played at different times”. Luis Figo, though, had no qualms in noting that “nobody can be
compared to Eusébio, he is the King”. Regardless of Figo’s opinion, which demands respect, it doesn’t seem too outlandish to state that Ronaldo could, in fact, go down in the history books as Portugal’s greatest, should he lead the side to a good World Cup campaign. Antonio Simoes, one of Eusébio’s team-mates at Benfica and the national side during the glorious 60s, has no doubt that this World Cup could see Ronaldo take that tag. “If things go well for the national team, Ronaldo will claim that title and I have no doubt that he is going to beat every record,” Simoes told Al Jazeera. “I think that he will be in great form as opposed to what happened four years ago. He is more mature, plays as part of the team and has stopped being so egotistical.” Known as one of Eusebio’s best friends, Simoes also makes a curious distinction
between the pair. “Eusebio was a born footballer. He was incredibly talented, while Ronaldo, although he also has an incredible talent, has made himself into a player with a lot of training and work in the gym. Technically, Eusebio was more attractive but you can’t compare their aerial game and that’s where Ronaldo is much better.” Jose Carlos, Eusebio’s national teammate but club rival, told Al Jazeera that Ronaldo has already reached the ‘greatest’ status and does not need the World Cup to prove anything. “He is indisputably the best Portuguese player ever, without a doubt the most complete player,” said Carlos. “Eusebio had speed and shooting as his main weapons but while Ronaldo has those qualities, he is faster and is brilliant with his head.” n — Words courtesy of MCT
