19th-Century Paintings and Sculptures March 29, 2 pm
The second session, the first is the comic session, of the March sale will feature several pieces from the illustrious collection of Paul Van der Perre (18951970). He was one of Belgium's most important book dealers, bibliophile and expert on 19th-century works on paper from Belgian artists such as Félicien Rops and James Ensor.1 One of his biggest merits was the publication of several bibliographic- and iconographic books and the creation of the journal ‘Le livre et l’estampe’. Originating from the heirs of Van der Perre are Félicien Rops’ ‘Dune’ and ‘Nature morte au livre bleu’ illustrated on this page.

20th-Century Paintings and Sculptures March 29, 2 pm
'Opus 31' by Victor Servranckx is an exceptional early work in the oeuvre of the artist dating back to 1922. A pristine provenance, originating from the former collection of the artist's brother-in-law Fernand Smeulders, married to Céline Servranckx adds to an even more unique character. A double-sided panel painting by an equal pioneering figure of the Belgian avant-garde, Felix De Boeck, and a rare drawing by Jos Leonard from the same exciting period, will feature in this session of the 29th of March.
Later artwork includes paintings by a.o. Guy Vandenbranden, Bert De Beul, Maryam Najd, Jan de Vlieger and Sam Dillemans. A particularity on the Belgian artmarket is a 1995 painting by Hollywoodborn Kenny Scharf.

‘La révélation de Gordes, pour moi, c’était de constater ce phénomène à l’échelle d’un village bâti sur roc. Spectacle permanent le jour, ou par clair de lune, obsédant mais combien fécond !’ - Victor Vasarely.
Lot 386 VICTOR VASARELY Oil on slate. Inscription 'Vasarely à Deyrolle ✴ Gordes le 21 août 1948 ✴ Saint Jean'. 20 x 20 cm (28.2 x 28.2 cm) Est.: € 12000-15000 Victor Vasarely discovered the medieval town in the Monts de Vaucluse in 1948 through Jean Deyrolle, a painter from Brittany who was a friend of the couple. Claire and Victor Vasarely fell in love with Gordes immediatly. 'In the early days of each summer, my grandparents would sacrifice the traditional "transhumance" to the garrigue; truck and car would carry equipment and dogs to get back to work, interspersed with a "swimming" break in the morning and another "pétanque" break at the end of the afternoon.' (Pierre Vasarely, only grandson of Claire and Victor Vasarely, President of the Vasarely Foundation) The unique light of the region of the Provence caught Vasarely similarly as it caught Chagall before him who came to the village in 1940 before going into exile in the United States. Many painters visited the region regularly or decided to live there permanently such as the artist Deyrolle, Léon Degand (art critic), René Char in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Denise René who owned property in the south of France.

Old Master Paintings March 30, 2 pm
The exclusive genre in Antwerp 17th-century painting, the so-called ‘Constkamers’ depicts the 'ensemble' of a proud collector in the setting of his house. Typically for the ‘Constkamer’ is the image of abundance: a wall full of paintings, small sculptures and curiosa. We present some of the finest pieces of the Old Masters session according to Antwerp 17th-century fashion. In the middle, a fine portrait of by the Dutch painter Jan Olis is dominating the composition. It is flanked by two flower still lifes of which the right one is a rare signed piece by Carel Borchaert Voet. Underneath, close to the eye of the observer, several marvellous 17th-century landscape paintings from Joos de Momper and his workshop, Carel Beschey, Frans Gijsels and Pieter van der Hulst are exhibited. During the 1600s, landscape painting flourished as an independent genre.
In Flanders, particularly in the port city of Antwerp, landscape became a popular subject for artists who spread ideas for landscape subjects and compositions through prints which easily spread over the continents. Other 17th-century additions to this 21th-century ‘Constkamer’ is a fine cabinet, bronze picket candlesticks and a bozzetto in terra cotta from Simon Louis Boizot. Although centuries have passed, these works of art still have that wall power to entertain a white cube wall that characterizes the modern architecture of the Bernaerts building, to seduce a 21st-century eye and to enlighten the fragmented contemporary mind.
