Reading the world I
01.
Discuss the following questions with your teacher and classmates. A. How often do you listen or read about sustainability on TV or the Internet? B. In your opinion, is sustainability related only to nature? C. What are the actions we may take in order to have a sustainable life?
Instruction: Read the following text. What kind of world would you like to see in 2030? Members of the United Nations asked themselves this question in 2015. They came up with a set of 17 goals to help us achieve that vision. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focus on some of humanity’s most difficult problems in different aspects. Those are 17 goals, each aiming a different aspect that can be changed in the world, aiming at a better and sustainable life for us all. Although they are different, it is believed that they are integrated, therefore, if one goal improves another will also get better. If quality education (goal #4) is spread, people can be aware about climate change, for example. We can give you many other examples about how integrated they are. Here are the sustainable development goals:

Imagine
Each goal has a set of targets which are used to measure their progress.
Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion, too
In 2016 the UN reviewed the SDGs creating a planet’s annual report card, named Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. This report measures the progress towards the 17 goals. More than 190 world leaders are committed to these goals.
Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one…
If you simply take a look at the goals it is easy to see that sustainability goes much beyond recycling and using metal straws, we need to be concerned about other people’s lives. The world is in a long way from solving all its problems. It is estimated that about 800 million people suffer without food and about 2,4 million live in inadequate sanitation areas. It is surely complex to solve all the problems, but we cannot give up.
LENNON, John W. Imagine. In: Imagine. Universal, 1971. [Fragmento]
04. In the song “What kind of world do you want”, we see this sentence “…Should there be people or peoples”. What is the difference between both words in bold?
02. Make a brief research about the 17 Global Goals. Then, talk about them with your teacher and classmates, relating the goals among each other to discuss their integration.
03. Think about actions people can start doing in their communities towards the Global Goals. Write a paragraph about it.
05. What
do you think about the world in the song “Imagine”? Is it possible? What parts of the song do you agree to be possible?
Instruction: Now, you will listen and read these two lyrics about chasing a better world. World What kind of world do you want? Think anything Let's start at the start Build a masterpiece Be careful what you wish for History starts now
06. What
is the world you want? Write about the changes you want to see in the world and explain your reasons.
Should there be people or peoples Money, funny pedestals for fools who never pay Raise your army, choose your steeple Don't be shy, the satellites can look the other way ONDRASIK, John. World. In: FIVE FOR FIGHTING. Two Lights. Aware Records, 2006. [Fragmento]

What did not come naturally to Lamarr however, was the notoriety and compensation she _______________ (deserve) for her ideas. The patent she _______________ (file) with co-inventor George Antheil aimed to protect their war-time invention for radio communications to “hop” from one frequency to another, so that Allied torpedoes couldn’t be detected by the Nazis. To this day, neither Lamarr nor her estate have seen a cent from the multi-billion-dollar industry her idea _______________ (pave) the way for, even though the U.S. military has publicly acknowledged her frequency-hopping patent and contribution to technology.
