THE WORLD OF SCABAL

65

To highlight the creative craftsmanship of tailoring, Scabal has commissioned a rising artist to depict his personal vision of “made-to-measure”. Côme Perché’s chosen medium is paper. With painstakingly precise cuts and folds, he fashions the planar surface into figurative sculptures. His creative process is not unlike that employed in the assembly of a bespoke suit. Following the design of a basic pattern, several stages of careful calibration occur, lines and contours are perfected, until finally the completed shape emerges. For Scabal, Côme Perché has created a series of four symbolic figures. When raised they portray the archetypal silhouettes of menswear, while acknowledging its perpetually evolving nature to the viewer. 66

THE ARTIST’S VIEW ON MADE-TO-MEASURE

68

THE CRAFT

The new collection has grown organically from the awareness that values and traditions are the new luxury of our times. By passing on the flame of sartorial elegance from generation to generation, we at Scabal help ensure the continuous injection of new meaning into the rules of masculine elegance. To achieve this we maintain control of all the processes from wool production through weaving to final tailoring. This enables us to avoid having to make compromises when it comes to quality and expression. The result that will be visible this summer is a truly advanced tailoring method created in our own production with an increasingly strong focus on traditional techniques. Comfortable and lightweight – these are the key qualities in our contemporary

approach to elegance – and we take them to hitherto unknown heights. The result is an elegant, yet relaxed style with an impeccable cut, an expression of true individuality. In addition to the lively, sophisticated colours and fabrics, our refined Spring-Summer collection comprises very subtle shades of true blue. The collection is designed around the culture of clothes and in particular: how to wear classic clothes today? Detlev Diehm, the creative director has defined what is essential for Scabal today. The ‘urban’ collection and the ‘weekend’ collection are different yet have the same feel to them. It is possible for example to combine a dark blue jacket in tone on tone fantasy

fabric with a top-of-the-range pair of jeans and a shirt in washed silk. This combination of similar tones and moods results in a very casual outfit that is at the same time very elegant. The blue suit can also be worn with a linen shirt and a pair of soft suede moccasins for an individual style that reveals a sense of freedom and yet that observes certain rules of male elegance. The cut is designed for fluidity and is your guarantee of a chic and natural appeal. The palette of colours is subtle and includes unusual shades: tropical wood, cigar, parchment, white sand, to name but a few. You are transported to Cuba or Sumatra. #jackets #suits #trousers #knits #denim #shorts #coats 69

THE CLOTH

Since 1938 Scabal has sold only the finest of fabrics made from the best raw materials. Twice a year we launch up to fifteen new collections assembling all the latest fabrics alongside our permanent fabric collections and special editions. This gives you the possibility to choose from 5000 top fabrics made by only highly skilled personnel in our own mill in Yorkshire, England, where craftsmanship has been passed on since 1799. Novelty for this season is the inclusion of kapok in our cotton range, another technical innovation from the Scabal weavers. The kapok tree is a symbol of Mayan mythology and the national emblem of a number of different countries. This vegetal fibre that comes

from a tropical tree is light and also known as ‘silk cotton’. It is very soft to the touch and has excellent thermoregulating properties. This will be the ideal look for your casual summer suits. Add that up to the best of cool wool, an all year round Super 120’s, an extremely light Super 150’s and another collection with mink added and your summer wardrobe will excel. For your casual summer jacket we advice cotton, linen and silk from our Acapulco collection that has varied patterns that are fresh and modern. You can go for finer and finer wool with our Super 180’s for a refined, classic look in blue, grey and black. Get a denim look of ultimate luxury in lightweight cashmere for an elegant

and sporty appeal. Pure silk for your jacket will contribute to a cool summer as the fabric weighs 230grams only and still gives you the aristocratic look. For those who are looking for an up-to-theminute wardrobe Scabal has created a blend of three yarns: crisp cool wool, Super 120’s and Super 130’s. For the ultimate luxury we added the most prestigious characteristics into the Ultra Caresse collection, a perfect cloth in pure cashmere who wants a discreet but modern look and feel different in his suit.

THE SPECIAL EDITIONS

Creativity and innovation are part of our core values. As a logical consequence Scabal has a long history developing ever more surprising and more exclusive fabric concepts called ‘Special Editions’. Scabal develops its special fabrics by selecting the rarest and most luxurious fibers. The finest wool ever made and the softest on the planet called ‘Summit’ is one of the masterpieces of Scabal’s mill in England. In 2000 we were the first to launch a fabric with precious stones, the ‘Diamond Chip’ range. It is the start of more exquisite fabrics with gold, platinum and lapis lazuli. In our ‘Orchid’ collection we add a sensory dimension. Our weaving skills and experience since 1799 makes it possible to push the boundaries of technical innovations. Our latest creations are ‘Imperial Trilogy’ and ‘Ultra Caresse’. The first is a rare

combination of exceptional softness and superb performance by combining Super 230’s wool with guanaco and Super 160’s. Two years of research were needed to combine the qualities of the guanaco fibre with superfine merino yarns. The latter is a pure worsted cashmere 2ply, so soft and light you will love to wear it all day long. Revered by Inca royalty, Vicuna has always been sought for its delicate fleeciness. Scabal was the first to launch a pure ‘Vicuna Suitings’ collection, for men looking for only the best. Winter silk is a unique, patented form of silk. Only the finest and longest silk fibres are selected. The silk is then woven and treated with the same finishing process as flannel and cashmere, which gives it the feel and warmth of wool. The result is an incredible winter fabric ‘Ultra Silk Siberia’ with an unprecedented feel, natural warmth and unrivalled sheen.

Blend silk with Super 180’s or Super 200’s wool and you can wear a super light weight fabric all year round with ‘EOS’ and ‘Sunrise’. ‘Special Editions’ are packaged in a luxury box and have their own unique fabric labels. The quality guarantee statement is woven into the selvedge of the fabric. Scabal continues its quest for more exceptional cloth combining the latest techniques, on the one hand, and manual craftsmanship, on the other. Scabal’s ‘Special Editions’ are ideal for men who like to celebrate in sheer luxury. #imperial trilogy #orchid #diamond chip #summit #treasure box #expression #ultra silk siberia #lapis lazuli #eos #sunrise #private line #vicuna jacketings #pure worsted vicuna #ultra caresse 73

THE STORY

the birth of scabal

Scabal subsequently acquired.

Scabal was founded in Brussels, Belgium, in 1938 by the German entrepreneur Otto Hertz.

the next stage

It started off life as a small company acting as a local supplier of cloth for men’s garments. At the time, the company employed just five people. Scabal rapidly acquired a reputation for innovation – in particular for its concept of ‘bunches’ which was a new way for tailors to present fabrics. By 1950, Scabal was already recognized as a leading cloth supplier to the world’s master tailors. Shortly thereafter, Scabal set up on the legendary Savile Row in London, where three centuries earlier, the concept of ‘bespoke English tailoring’ first saw the light of day. Scabal’s expertise actually goes all the way back to 1807 and the creation of the company called Wainshiell that

By 1970, Scabal employed several hundred people throughout Europe, and the brand’s reputation was growing exponentially. J.-Peter Thissen, Otto Hertz’s most valued associate, was appointed to manage the brand. Dali projected a vision of men’s fashion in the 21st century for Scabal and produced 12 exclusive paintings. Scabal provided the fabrics for several films made in USA. This marked the start of a long lasting relationship with the Hollywood film industry and Broadway and Scabal became a privileged supplier of fabrics. Among the portfolio of films for which Scabal supplied fabrics are The Godfather, Casino, Men in Black, The Aviator to

name but a few. Scabal embarked on cooperative ventures in London with the West End theatres. In 1973 Scabal purchased a leading woollen mill in Huddersfield, Yorkshire England, producing the most refined fabrics, since 1799. Technical innovations flourished at Scabal’s mill and new qualities were constantly being created. These include the first Super 120’s and 150’s fabric, Lapis Lazuli and Diamond Chip (with fragments of precious stones integrated into the weave) and the ultimate Super 250’s. Scabal is generally recognised as one of the founding fathers of the ‘Superfine’ fabrics classification (Super 100’s, Super 120’s, etc.). from sheep to shop In 1974, the company began to produce 75

and sell its own suits and in 1989 it acquired its own garment factory that had been founded in the thirties on the Franco-German border. The Scabal style was born– a traditional and timeless look, accentuated by the perfection of its cut and a choice of more than 5,000 different fabrics. scabal today In 2006, Gregor Thissen, the son of J.-Peter Thissen was named CEO of Scabal. Father and son now work together full time in an ambiance that revolves around family values and international expansion. At the beginning of 2000, Scabal created an online fabrics catalogue which sent a message to the world demonstrating the future-oriented culture of the company. In 2007, Scabal launched Bespoken, its 76

own international magazine, to promote its vision of the ‘tailor-made’ gentleman lifestyle. Stefano Rivera joined Scabal in June 2013 and succeeded Gregor Thissen as CEO. He is now responsible for the day-to-day management of the group with Gregor now acting as Executive Chairman. Today, Scabal has its own stores as well as ‘shop in shops’ in London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin and Beijing. You will also find Scabal at superior tailors and authorised stockists in over 65 countries.

The KAPOK tree is a symbol of Mayan mythology and the national emblem of a number of different countries. This plant fibre that comes from a tropical tree is light and also known as ‘silk cotton’. Scabal uses cashmere from goats that come from the dry and cold mountainous plateau of western and southwest Mongolia. To survive in this harsh climate, these goats develop, in their hair, a layer of soft fibers. The precious fibre is renowned for its warmth, exceptional lightness and at the same time, its longevity. The combination of Scabal’s craftsmen and technical expertise has allowed Scabal to develop this unique and luxurious collection. A comfortable weight of 230g and a classic but contemporary range of designs, such as Pick & Pick designs with coloured stripes, thin herringbones, discrete shadow stripes and plains, are the ingredients for a thrilling recipe. A perfect cloth for the man who wants a discreet but modern look and who appreciates quality. 81
