Argumentative Essay On Vegetarianism

Around 7.3 million people in the United States are vegetarian ("Vegetarian Times"). The dictionary defines a vegetarian as "A person who does not eat meat, and sometimes other animal products, especially for moral, religious or health reasons" ("Vegetarian Definition"). Practicing a religion that advocates vegetarianism is one of many reasons some people follow a vegetarian diet. A senior at Liberty–Benton High School who considers herself a pescatarian, a person whose only meat source is fish and seafood, promotes others to join in on a diet like hers. She claims that over the three years of her pescatarian diet she has become healthier and happier. Vegetarianism is a controversial topic, but overall, it creates a healthier lifestyle,...show more content...

During the 80's and 90's, people became vegetarians more because of environmental issues. In the mid 90's, the Mad Cow disease, Listeria, and Salmonella break out occurred, making people more cautious of meat eating. The Animal Welfare Act was established in 1996 and signed by Lyndon B. Johnson (Animal Welfare Act). The Animal Welfare Act has authority over animals in laboratories, animal exhibitors, dealers who sell animals to research laboratories, dog and cat breeders, animal carriers, intermediate handlers, circuses, zoos, puppy roadside menageries, mills, and transporters of animals. Under the Act, people must provide their animals with adequate care and treatment in the areas of housing, handling, sanitation, nutrition, water, veterinary care, and protection from extreme weather and temperatures (Animal Welfare Act). People that disobey the Act can receive punishments such as revoked license, imprisonment, or a fine. Over one million birds and mammals are violently killed every hour in the United States, and an estimated 150 billion animals per year are murdered worldwide (Arora). Animal slaughterhouses for large food companies are known for animal cruelty and vegetarians recognize this. Many vegetarians also boycott places like SeaWorld who keep wild animals locked in cages. Every day in countries around the world, animals are fighting for their lives. They are enslaved, beaten, and kept in chains to make them perform for human "entertainment." They are

While some believe freedom of speech violates the rights of others, it is one of the most fundamental rights that individuals enjoy. In this argumentative essay, I'll discuss why freedom of speech is important, but it's not the only important right that we have. Yes, freedom of speech should be absolute, but we should not give anyone the chance to define reasonable restrictions. But 'hate speech' should strictly be restricted, as it infringes on free speech of others. "Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become, Steve Jobs". Choosing this topic is to actually show that not everything needs an argument, like what if there weren't any rules; imagine how the world be. The phrase...show more content... Why should it be restricted? People have a right to say whatever they want to say. No one has the right to stop them. Sometimes the world may not like some of the opinions people voice, or the words that they use, but this is absolutely no reason to have the government trample people's natural rights. What about it needs to be restricted? Freedom of speech can help the world change. But like BIG said "we can't change the world unless we change ourselves". For example, how can a preacher have the right to express/voice his opinion about some but the congregation can't. Maybe that's a bad example ha–ha but you get what I'm trying to say. Where can it be restricted at? It can be restricted in the White House. Presidents don't realize how powerful there tongue is. Like for instance Donald Trump dissing Steph like that come on man you're the president. As much as I dislike Steph, the way he handle it people couldn't do nothing but respect him. It's probably so much going on in that place with Trump. But see now this comes back to things that we have no control over its done now he's the man in charge either get with it or get gone. Just have to pray that he doesn't make a decision that he'll regret. Who should restrict it? If they were to be restricted the president should be the first to do so. Donald Get more content

Mandating the HPV Vaccination: A Controversial Debate

Background:

The Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the virus responsible for cervical cancer. It is one the most common viral sexually transmitted infections. A vaccine was approved in 2006 that is effective in preventing the types of HPV responsible for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. Proposals for routine and mandatory HPV vaccination of girls have become sources of controversy for parents of school–aged youth, legislators, members of the medical community, and the public at large (Cooper et al. 2010).

Evidence Based Arguments against Mandatory HPV Vaccination

As many as 1,400 women in Canada are diagnosed with cancer of the cervix each year. More than 400 die from it (Mah et al, 2011). Among the many arguments for mandatory HPV vaccination, the foremost is that it is an important medical achievement and a major public health milestone. This vaccine has proven to be one–hundred percent effective in preventing the 4 HPV strains that are responsible for seventy percent of cervical cancers and ninety percent of genital warts. In addition, no serious side effects have been identified. Because this vaccine is a preventive measure, administration before onset of sexual activity is ideal; however, even females who have been sexually active can still benefit from this vaccination (Perkins et al., 2010). Nationally and internationally, theHPV vaccine will significantly reduce disease burden by reducing monetary and psychological costs of invasive procedures that remove precancerous and cancerous lesions. By combining vaccination with routine Pap smear screening, these public health efforts have the remarkable opportunity to eradicate cervical cancer (Ramet et al., 2011). Another reason HPV vaccination should be mandatory is because health disparities could become even greater if this vaccination is not mandated. Unfortunately, poorer women are more likely to develop HPV infection and develop cervical cancer. The vaccine currently costs 400 dollars for the three rounds of vaccinations in Canada. But because poor women cannot

Abortion has been one of the most popular and argumentative topics that has still yet to be settled. Ultimately the question we can ask when trying to solve this issue is whether or not pregnant women should have the right to kill an unborn baby. Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before birth takes place and is a moral wrong. Can we as a society call ourselves human if we allow the deaths of unborn babies to take place? Those who take the side of pro–choice or as also known as pro–abortion often use statements concerning life, humanity, human rights and freedom to support their claims. I believe abortion should be illegal because we as a society must protect the human lives that are in danger whether or not they are in their first...show more content...

They continue by stating that abortion is simply a process that terminates pregnancy, not a life. This is an obvious misconception since the term embryo refers to humans at particular states of development. They are not blobs in a state of development, but rather humans growing to be ready for life. This simple blob or embryo that people believe is okay to obliterate is actually already a complex form of a human. Even before the trimester stage the baby will have all its body parts needed for the rest of his or her life. Although countless scientific and medical textbooks agree that human life begins at conception, people are still doubtful whether or not our science is correct. But if we are truly uncertain when life starts, it still does not give us the right to destroy a possible life. Why must we doubt thousands of intelligent scientists who agree that life begins at conception because of religious beliefs? Can you truly say it is okay to kill a life because people's religious beliefs? No matter how much better it sounds defining abortion as terminating pregnancy, in the end a heartbeat is stopped, and a life is not able to continue. Those who support abortion often overuse the claim that every individual has the right to choose and it is unfair to restrict a women's choice on abortion. Although this claim at first thought may seem to be able to uphold the abuse of abortion, we

Arguments Against The Holocaust

According to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, up to 6 million Jews died. To the anti–semitic Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, Jews were an inferior race, and an alien threat to the German community. Some people believe that the Holocaust was not an act of genocide, but they're wrong. The Holocaust should be considered an example of genocide based on the United Nation's definition, the stages of genocide, and the specific evidence provided in the memoir Night.

First, the Holocaust should be considered an example of genocide because of the United Nation's definition of genocide. The treaty called the "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide" explains how genocide is a crime and intends to be prevented and to punish it. The UN explains in detail when it writes: genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the ...show more content...

The article "The 8 Stages of Genocide," written by Gregory H. Stanton identifies that genocidal acts are considered to be genocide and it is a crime whether in whole or part of a group is killed. And that genocide comes in a process. Stanton states that the 3rd stage of genocide is dehumanization. He writes: "One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, insects or disease." Wiesel also shows this stage when he writes: "There are eighty of you in the car, the German officer added. If anyone goes missing, you will all be shot, like dogs" (Wiesel 24). This quote supports Stanton's definition of dehumanization because it directly shows dehumanization acted upon one group and that the Jews are less than human, or animals. And that they are not worthy to have human

My honest thought on argumentation prior to starting this course were that argumentation was going to very easy. I simply thought that it would consist of arguing with someone back and forth trying to get my point across. But i was wrong, base off my pro/con speech and the few chapters that we have covered i've realized that argumentation is more complex than what i had expected it to be. There is different ways that someone can go about when state their claim using Rogerian argumentations style or using Aristotle's rhetorical appeals or other forms of argumentation styles. After my speech i realized that a clear and controversial topic is needed in order to see both sides of the claim. Aside from a topic research is very important it must be credible the more credibility one has the better are your chances of persuading the audience. Now i see argumentation as a process of reasoning that must consist of organized information and credible sources. What surprised me about my topic was how hard it was trying to find credible information. There was a lot of information but a lot of it wasn't credible, there was also a lot of information but the data wasn't from the United States it was it foreign countries so it was no good for me. However i did find scholarly articles and other credible sources i just had to really dig to find the information. One thing that surprised me about my topic was that i didn't get more than 2 or 3 people who tried and rebuttal me. I had prepared Get

The expression argument has two meanings in scholarly writing. First, it means a composition that takes a position on one side of a divisive issue. You might write an argument against the death penalty, or for or against censorship of pornography. But argument has another meaning, too. It means an essay that, simply, argues a point. You might assemble an argument about the significance of ancestor myths in a certain aborigine culture, or you might write an argument defending your understanding of any poem or essay that is read in your philosophy class. (Winthrop University) You are not necessarily taking one side of a divisive issue, but you are required to defend your points with credible evidence. You are taking a position. In emotionally stimulating situations, however, the audience will hold more sturdily to its beliefs the more strongly those beliefs are challenged.

Young, Becker and Pike suggest breaking these barriers to communication by using a variation of Rogers' non–directive therapy. In

"Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation," Rogers suggests that in emotional disputes, neither party should put forward a position until she has carefully, non–judgmentally and with the maximum possible empathy restated the position of the other, to the other's satisfaction. (Brent) This will convey to the other the sense that he is understood and that the two parties are more similar than different, thereby creating a context for communication. (Brent) Carl Rogers was born January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, the fourth of six children. His education started in the second grade because he could already read before kindergarten. He spent his adolescence isolated, independent and self–disciplined. He went to the University of Wisconsin as an agriculture major, but later switched to religion to study for the ministry. He has been quoted as saying "that his new experiences so broadened his thinking that he began to doubt some of his basic religious views." (Boeree) Carl Rogers later married Ms. Helen Elliot and moved to New York to start school at the Union Theological Seminary, a famous liberal religious institution.

Three reasons why people do not believe in spanking are spanking can cause harmful side effects, spanking is no more effective than other punishments, and spanking promotes violence in children. Some harmful side effects that could possibly be caused by spanking are children suffering from depression, being inferior in their school performance, or having problems later on in life. It is impossible to see side effects because they are not usually revealed immediately. People also believe that spanking cannot be proven to be more effective than any other punishment. They think parents can use other positive and nonviolent punishments to show children their actions were wrong without subjecting the children to the detrimental effects of...show more content...

They believe the studies that prove spanking can be helpful, think spanking is not always wrong, or believe that harmful effects could be caused by personality differences. Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychology professor, did a study that found that people who could recall being spanked as a child had performed better in school and showed more optimistic qualities than people who were not spanked. The research completely contradicted the studies that showed spanking to be harmful. (3) Some experts take note that 50 years ago the majority of children were spanked by their parents and today there is a significant decline in the amount of children being spanked; but today more children are shown to be aggressive than in the past. There is also a possibility that the "bad effects" in spanked children could have been caused by the child's personality or the behavioral differences that warranted the spankings. (4)

I think the second argument is stronger because it takes in account that all spankings might not be bad or harmful. Many studies against spanking do not differentiate the intensity of a spanking; a simple spanking is a world of difference from child abuse. (4) It was also be concluded by both sides of the argument that children from the ages of two to six can benefit from spanking. (2&4) Authoritarian parents are most likely to spank their children, because they generally command respect and have more inflexible rules for children. Get

Immigration has been a burning issue lately, particularly after Donald Trump's immigration ban in the United States of America. It has been a topic that families discuss every morning with breakfast. Despite many concerns related to immigration, it has several positive benefits that mostly outweighs the negativity. People bizarrely argue when it comes to immigration, but these arguments are primarily based on facts and ideas that are outdated or inconsistent and blindfold the positive aspect related to immigration. Many immigrants in the United States are good workers who don't depend upon any public welfare and mostly help in the overall development of the economy. As a country made by immigrants, we must not forget the fact that immigrants have helped to build cities and create a path of development form Google to iPhones (Gray & Furman, 2012). These facts are secluded, and some related arguments with different content have been repeated for years and continue. Immigrants have a lot to give the United States rather than to take, especially when it comes to economic terms.

Immigration has been an essential but disruptive aspect of the people and the political state of the United States; however, debates related to immigration and its benefits are intensified significantly. Opposing immigration keeps ranting on how government should exercise better law to control over the people entering into the States from the foreign land. One of the most buzzed argument is that American citizen is unemployed because immigrants stole their jobs and disrupted the economy (Hoban, 2017). Also, an appeal to National security and vulnerability after several terrorist attacks all over the world and also to the government to keep track and maintain the no. of immigrants to create a safer environment (Cafaro, 2009). However, the contrary to these arguments have often been proven right. The pattern of the immigration shows that the contribution of the immigrants has resulted in an economic boost that cannot be overlooked by the government. Most of the immigrants leave their home country and migrate to the United States because they can live in freedom, practice their religion and make the most out of their life (Arizaga 2006).

The Art of Argumentation

The art of argumentation has become very complex and multi–dimensional in a sense of the many didn't ways you can approach it. Argumentation is communicative reason in situations where people sole purpose is to prove something through justified acts, beliefs, attitudes, and values. Argumentation is said to mainly rely on good reason and, that is the audience base to agree or degree with the agreement. In any situation every audience is different so therefore good reason can be impacted by culture, which let leaves the decision making to argumentation. Argumentation has become a part of ones everyday life, no matter the culture or the location. An argument can be made in a small or big way; it simple just depends on the situation. If 20 year old Tommy calls his mom and tells her that everyone in the world is going to be at the Adam Levine concert and if he misses the concert it will be the end of his social life. Tommy made an argument to his mother whether he was trying to or not. Debate is a big part of argumentation because it all about persuading and convincing the audience to understand or agree with whoever may be speaking. The process of inquiry and advocacy is debate. Debate requires two completive sides in an engaging head to head clash of support for or against a specific proposition. In this paper four to five different fallacies will be discussed, defined and shown how they co–exist in real life situations as well as in debates. The fallacies that will be

Marriage is defined as "the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship". What is not defined when it comes to marriage is when you should get married. Most people would say that when you love someone you should marry them, but what if you fall in love at 19? Youngmarriage is a hot topic because older generations believe we are too young and immature to get married. The success of young marriage depends upon maturity levels, social media, and financial readiness. You can get married at any time, but it really depends on if you're ready to get married. The maturity levels for the average marriage are lower when you are in your teens/early twenties. Statistics show that "young couples often have less schooling, less life experience, less independence, and less work experience to be able to maintain a marriage for a long period of time".

One of the biggest things that people don't realize about marriage is that it is the responsibility. Outside of the big wedding and the dress and the rings you are now responsible for this other person. There can be times when you have to put them in front of yourself and your needs to accommodate theirs. Being able to stay in a successful relationship depends on being part of a team. Supporting the other person, no matter what and being able to handle anger, pride, fear, joy, love, and jealousy. That's the number one thing that people don't understand about marriage, is how much you need to be

Persuasive Essay On Online Classes

Most people think highly of online classes; get to work from home, get to work on a flexible schedule, and anyone can do it. Though no one has heard the cons of taking one. I personally took three semesters of online classes in high school and had a horrible experience. Because of loose scheduling, poor communication, and the focus needed, online classes are not suitable for procrastinators. To give a better understanding, I will summarize my experience with the class. Me, being a procrastinator, thought to myself: I'll just work on the weekends and if I don't finish the class by the end of the school year, I can finish within the first few weeks of summer. This was a god awful plan. Unsurprisingly, close to nothing was accomplished on the weekends. Friends would ask me to hang out every weekend, and I did every time. Why would I want to work on my class on the weekend when I could be having fun? I would later regret this decision. On the days I stayed home and could have worked on the class, I completed nothing. On these days, I would tell myself: I'll just complete what I didn't do this weekend next weekend. This rarely happened. Thus, the cycle of getting nothing accomplished started. I disregarded my class for most of the first semester of junior year. With only nine assignments out of eighty finished after the first semester of the school year, I was immensely behind. I told myself to get my act together during second semester and grind out these two semesters Get

Additionally, the cultural elites must be established and well–versed in writing and speaking the national language. There must also be a valid reason for its claim on a certain territory. It is only when these three requirements are fulfilled will the international community consider their claim for a nation (Hobsbawm, 1990: 37). The question on why and how he makes his choice is irrelevant. It is only when he consented to participate in the community will he readily conform to the community norms and values. Society cultural consciousness would then play an important role in dictating the speed of his consent. According to Herder, people become aware of their heritage when they read or listen to myths, legends and even songs. By doing so, the community captures the Volgeist or the spirit of the people. Language is thus seen as an important medium in spreading a community's culture as it contains people traditions and historical memories. Therefore a nation is defined as the unification of people through the sharing of the same cultural heritage (Heywood, 1997: 105). This approach has been met with several criticisms. Firstly, according to Gellner the definition used is too wide (Gellner, 1983: 53). By adopting the above criteria, any social network with the same cultural norms and values are entitled to call themselves as a nation. This would include clubs or any other associations. Another problem encountered by this definition is the impossibility of limiting cultural boundaries. In addition to that Herder's claim of the unification of the people through a common language could be dismissed as most nations have several national languages due to its multicultural population. Switzerland, for example, has three

Arguments Against Juries

Arguments For and Against Juries

The right to a trial by jury is a tradition that goes right to the heart of the British legal system. It is a right fiercely fought for, and fiercely defended at those times when its powers have been seen to be under threat – as those backing reforms are finding. The tradition of being "tried by a jury of ones peers" probably has its origins in Anglo Saxon custom, which dictated that an accused man could be acquitted if enough people came forward to swear his innocence. Trial by jury was first enshrined in law in what has been seen as the world's first proclamation of human rights – the Magna Carter. The document, decreed in 1215 by King John after a rebellion by...show more content...

Minor offences, such as drunkenness, could only be tried by magistrates, and major offences, such as murder and rape, only by jury. The government now wants to limit the number of cases which are "triable either way".

There have been many debates throughout time about the effectivness of juries. SWR worldwide was commisioned by The Bar Council and The Law Society to conduct research of 903 members of the public aged between 18 and over across England. The findings were as follows;

The above chart shows a clear agreement of the general public on juries and the trust they show in their abilities. Similarly the research showed that the public has more faith in police and juries than others in the justice system.

В· Respondents are most likely to have confidence in the police (81%) and juries (80%) than in other players in the justice system.

В· Most think a jury of 12 individuals rather than a judge and two magistrates would be more likely to reflect their own (73%) and society at large's (80%) views and values.

Mandatory Vaccination Argumentative Essay

Mandatory vaccinations have been hotly debated in the United States for over two centuries, making the argument almost as old as the country itself. As early as 1809, Massachusetts became the first state to mandate the world's premiere vaccine. Authorities recognized the life–saving benefits of the smallpox vaccine. They chose to require inoculation to protect the community from further outbreaks. Public outrage ensued as some community members feared the new vaccine and believed they should be able to choose if they wished to receive it. The most vocal protestors formed anti–compulsory vaccination groups and were successful in getting laws overturned in many states. However, even the United States Supreme Court has upheld states' rights to require immunization. (A) Vaccinations should be...show more content...

Despite significant progress in the fight against preventable disease, millions still die needlessly each year. According to UNICEF, originally known as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, a vaccine preventable disease is responsible for 2 million fatal infections worldwide each year. About 75% of these deaths occur in children under five years of age. (N) In more vivid terms, UNICEF notes that vaccine–preventable diseases kill a child every 20 seconds. (D) Due to high rates of childhood vaccination, the United States has experienced a dramatic reduction in such deaths. A comparison of the years 1950 and 2010 clearly illustrates the benefits of vaccinations. During this 60–year period, deaths from diphtheria reduced from 410 to 0, tetanus from 336 to 3, pertussis from 1,118 to 26, and polio from 1,904 to 0. Measles deaths dropped from 468 in 1950 to 0 in 2008, the last year a United States death rate was recorded. It's not surprising that vaccinations have been touted as one of the top ten health achievements of the 20th century by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

We should reform our criminal justice system to fix the inequalities of mandatory sentences, bail, and we should create reentry programs to help released inmates stay crime free.
