The culminating events of Ned Kelly's life led to the gruesome murder at Stringybark Creek; when Ned knowingly murdered three innocent policemen. This small contingency of officers included Sergeant Kennedy and Constables McIntyre, Lonigan and Scalon. While searching for Dan and Ned, the officers split into two groups in order to find the fugitives. Even though the officers were disguised as prospectors, Dan and Ned recognised them immediately and began shooting at them. During the battle, three of the officers died; only McIntyre managed to escape and return back to testify against Ned. Although some historians believe that the murder of these officers at Stringybark Creek was an accident, evidence shows that Ned deliberately shot at these innocent men. Just before leaving the crime scene, Ned stole Sergeant Kennedy's gold watch and later stated, "What's the use of a watch to a dead man?" These evil, soulless words were truly spoken by a cruel and deplorable villain.

According to Sartre (1948, p.1) Existentialism is a principle that renders human life possible, through the affirmation that all truth and action denote an environment and a human subjectivity. A belief that the essence of man precedes that existence which we encounter through experience (Sartre, 1948, p. 3). Existentialism places the full responsibility for one's existence upon our own shoulders; putting a man in ownership of himself as he is, responsible for his own individuality (Sartre, 1948, p. 3). But he is also responsible for men, as he fashions a certain image of man, as I would have them to be (Sartre, 1948, p. 4). "I think, therefore I am", this is the supreme truth of consciousness as it attains to itself (Sartre, 1948, p. 9). In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you've accumulated. I find that the older I grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most successful. Rich, poor or in between, they've tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination. They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn't afford it, they ordered the $55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would enhance the meal so much more than water would.
