It is with much pleasure that I deliver this report in this July 2017 magazine. Since my last report in the December issue the increase in the cattle market across Australia should be seen to be believed. The steady continued rise over the past 18 months has been phenomenal and just when you think the commercial rate can’t go any higher another price spike is reached. These record high prices over a sustained period has seen an unrivalled confidence amongst all cattle producers which in turn has rewarded those with investments in the industry with grazing properties in strong demand in an ever-spiralling market place. The recent Autumn weaner sales have resulted in big dollars across the spread of steer and heifer weaners with confidence among buyers with the forecast of high prices continuing for another 2 years to come. The 2017 Gunnedah Powerhouse weaner sale at the Gunnedah Saleyards and the Casino weaner sale were supported by the NSW State Committee for the highest price pen of steers and heifers sired by Charolais. I personally witnessed at the Gunnedah sale, genuine steer weaners sired by Charolais bulls from Angus, Hereford cross cows topping at $1,516 per head. This once again highlighted the advantage of the Charolais sire and the extra return achievable. Our Silver Calf tag programme is up and running and Council would encourage members to support this programme event and make all bull clients aware of these tags and their availability. The Charolais Society AGM this year was held at Albury in March with a small but active group of members attending. This provided good interaction with Council and issues raised will be considered moving forward with the future of the Society. This is our second regional Annual General Meeting in recent times with the Council endeavouring to move the AGM to different regions to allow members to participate and interact with the Society Council. The Australian Beef Industry is being dominated by Angus in popularity with Wagyu numbers increasing at a dramatic pace driven by high returns. I still see this as a short-term trend with future over supply and decreased premiums being paid. The future should see fringe producers turning back to mainstream breeds.

Charolais breeders should look forward to carcase yield X-Ray development and research which will favour our breed with higher muscle content which in turn means extra yield. At the time of writing this report, plans are well underway for our 2017 Charolais National Showcase and Sale along with the Youth Stampede plus this year a new section for Charolais sired steers with a Steer Show and Jackpot competition. Congratulations go out to all members participating and supporters of this major Charolais event. Many thanks must go to our valued and generous sponsors with a very special thanks to our major sponsors Allflex, Fairfax Media and Pickles Auctions. A special thanks to the Salier family from Minnie Vale for their donation of an outstanding quality heifer to auction at the dinner with all proceeds going to Charolais Youth. With these continuing generous supporters, this National Charolais Event is and will continue to be a must be event for the Charolais population. Looking forward, we are set to start plans for the 2020 World Charolais Conference with many different timing and activities being examined by Council and staff. This is a huge undertaking and will require strong and active member support to make it a success. I feel sure we will be able to send our visitors home with some wonderful memories of their Australian visit. Colin, Deearn, Hayley and Lucy continue with their excellent work with day to day running of Society business and I am positive members are grateful for the effective and efficient manner in which they deal with business. Thanks to all members and advertisers in this and past magazines. It is this support that will grow this publication in to a sought-after print. I hope this message finds all members in good health and excellent seasons.

I write this editorial on my return from the brilliantly organised World Charolais Technical Conference in Mexico. The fabric that holds the international Charolais community is indeed strong and it was satisfying to participate in the sharing of information and ideas that can only benefit the breed worldwide. Networking with breeders, society administrators and technical staff was informative and I look forward to developing some ideas that have evolved from these conversations. The abilities of Charolais are amazing, when you see Mexican Charolais thriving in low rainfall conditions and then you talk to Juan Domingo Sandoval Valladares from Guatemala introducing Charolais influence to his Brahman herd where they receive 4 metres of rain a year. I might add Juan also runs water buffalo which makes good sense. During the Technical Conference, the International Charolais AGM was held and this was a truly productive meeting with an agreement to increase meeting frequency, develop an international youth exchange and to continue to include the Charbray breed in our international community. One of the take home messages from the international Technical conference which focused on marketing was that breed magazines have an established place in breed marketing. Ranch House Design marketing survey indicated that 90% of livestock producers would rather read a breed publication in print than online. One thing that is essential in any print material is using a professional printer and we use and strongly recommend Litho Art based in Brisbane. The Litho Art team is amazing to work with and their product, well you are holding it, is first class. The far reaching marketing abilities of the Internet were also highlighted. Again Ranch House Designs surveyed livestock producers last year and concluded that 85% of surveyed responders said they look at a businesses website prior to making a purchase. I know myself booking rooms for meeting and accommodation in new locations, no website no business. Facebook and other social media platforms may be fast and get news out to a wide range of users but a website allows in-depth information and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always able to be found again. If you have a website be sure to tell the office so we can list it on our website.

In the last six months we have seen some great Charolais success stories emerge. One of the highlights was the recent release of the 2016 Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) membership and registration data. During the drought years on the east coast Charolais had a downturn in registration activity, in 2016 our registrations increased with a trend line of 6%. Charolais maintain the seventh placing based on registrations and continue to be the dominant European breed. The Franco Family exhibited the Supreme Beef Bull at Sydney Royal with their Caloona Park Little Hero and for the second year running Charolais won the Grand Champion Carcase award. Strong results have also been achieved in feedlot and grass fed trials across the country indicating that Charolais are very adaptable to different environments and market specifications. Sale results indicate that more Charolais sires have been sold at auction in Autumn and demand for registered females has been outstanding. We have seen the largest number of registered females offered at auction in many years and the market has absorbed these females at very good averages. Last year with the support of Alex and Barbara McLachlan we offered a heifer to raise funds for the development of Charolais youth activities. Ron Johnstone from Milford Charolais purchased Airlie Rebecca L34E and the proceeds of this event have been used across our junior activities. Money from this sale have been invested into the Garrett Youth Scholarship, our National Youth Stampede and sending two Charolais representatives to the Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) Young Leaders conference. This year we extend our sincere appreciation to Sue and Jason Salier from Minnie-Vale Charolais. Sue and Jason have dug deep into their replacement heifers and offered MinnieVale Primrose M18E to raise funds for youth development. The Salier Family have been awesome supporters of our breed since they commenced in Charolais. Please be sure if you are at the National to check out Primrose M18E as the proceeds of her sale are 100% invested into developing Charolais youth in Australia.

As you receive this publication we will be preparing for the Charolais National events in Dubbo. Once again we have received a tremendous show of support from breeders with an expectation of some 170 head on site. Our Youth Stampede has increased to over 100 participants and our sale has attracted some exciting lots. In this column for the last few years I have eluded to change and adapting to change as it is required. In order to adapt to change and move forward, one must have an idea of what, where and why of the situation at hand. I strongly believe in education be it formal or informal, basically arming yourself with the best data and facts to enable a decision to be made. In the beef industry this could include understanding Estimated Breeding Values, genetic markers or consumer trends. cont page 10....

Producing a quality product in any industry is ineffective if the market does not support your endeavours. Just look at how many cattle breeds have entered Australia in the last twenty years and of these how many can be looked upon as viable today. Results may surprise! My life has been heavily invested in the registered cattle industry. I can remember clearly our families registered cattle herd in the early 1970’s even though I was obviously very young. I have been fortunate to work with and manage some very large and progressive studs of various breeds for twenty years. I have taken the opportunity to invest in tertiary education and have been involved in breed society management for some fourteen years now. Have I figured it out? Not even close but I am enjoying the journey and the experiences on the way. Every day offers an opportunity to observe the success of other peoples and evaluate what I can take from their story?

While we do not recommend taking this advice literally, the concept behind the statement is worth some consideration. Taking that first step towards the unknown can be intimidating. Luckily in this era of the world wide web, information access has never been easier. Finding information is one thing; acting on it if warranted requires another step forward. Some of you reading this column are seed stock producers and are charged with improving the genetic merit of the other readers of this column, the commercial producer. In turn the commercial producer needs to be meeting the specifications of the processing industry that in turn has the all powerful consumer to satisfy. Do all these levels of the industry receive clear and concise direction? At a guess NO!

Consumers change desire constantly, driving market changes which have an effect down the production line. Remembering that when a stud breeder orders a semen straw or purchases a new stud sire it is realistically close to a minimum four years before the progeny hit a plate in front of a consumer. Daughters of the sire selection potentially will be influencing the herd for up to twelve years (or more). The need to be making good decisions cannot be under estimated as the influence of a bad decision genetically can be felt for many years. I believe that Charolais have a clear and deserved place in the Australian beef industry. My belief is that Charolais can add to many producers’ profitability if the step was taken to incorporate our breed into their programs. Shepherdson and Boyd’s Toogoolawah Weaner sale is a great example of this. When you see over 4,000 weaners with Charolais influence in one yarding you can only say the breed is working in this environment. The facts that repeat buyers from along the east coast return annually to this sale are testament that these calves can perform either on grass or in the feedlot. I thank all members that have taken the opportunity to promote the breed in any arena. All members working together make the expansion of Charolais in Australia achievable. Congratulations to David and Prue Bondfield on being named 2017 Coles Australian Farmer of the Year, a great achievement. Sydney Royal 2017 Judge: Mr Neil Watson, Watasanta Santa Gertrudis

One of the highlights for the Charolais breed at the 2017 Sydney Royal was taking the Interbreed Champion bull title with Caloona Park Little Hero. Little Hero could more aptly be described as #bigstar as he paraded effortlessly at 940kg at eighteen months of age. The Urquhart Trophy of which the Interbreed Champion male and female is selected is judged by a panel of three. The high performance and power of the Charolais champion was obvious with a member of the Urquhart judging panel, Scott Ferguson commenting on Little Hero’s “combination of depth, power and softness”. The other judges Dianna Wood and Bryce Camm also spoke well of the interbreed champion bull. Caloona Park Little Hero (R/F) exhibited by Steven and Louie Franco was earlier judged junior and grand champion bull and Supreme Charolais Exhibit after winning the largest bull class of the day. Beside a very impressive daily weight gain of 1.73kg/day the bull boasted an EMA of 134cm2 and great cover of 17/10mm.

A sixth generation of Steve and Louie’s breeding program this impressive young sire was sired by Caloona Park Hero (R/F). Breed judge Mr Neil Watson, Watasanta Santa Gertrudis stud commented “he’s a game changer for the breed. He has performance and power exhibiting muscle, weight and fat cover. Have a look at his rump and hindquarter, he’s as soft as marshmellow and yet he has a very strong back”. Caloona Park also won the junior bull 14 to 16 months class with Caloona Park Luigi (P)(R/F) sired by Airlie Farland as well as senior bull class 20 to 24 months with Caloona Park Leroy (P/S) sired by Rosedale Dinga (P). Luigi had a weight gain of 1.72kg/day and scanned an impressive EMA of 128cm2 at only 16 months. Caloona Park Leroy was sashed reserve senior champion bull resulting in a great show for the Franco Family. Reserve junior champion bull was exhibited by Travis and Sara Worth with Tractor Larceny (P). This young sire was sired by their American AI sire Wells Mr Just-In 3861 and came from his first Australian drop of calves. Caloona Park Larceny won the 18 to 19 months class weighing 952kg with an EMA of 131cm2. Other class winners in the junior bull section was Chris Knox and Helen Alexander with a son of their consistent Temana Gold Logie sire. DSK TGL Mission M I 6had a daily weight gain of 1.66kg/day and came from the Juliette family line. Little Valley showed a son of Triple J Pac Man 22N to win the baby bull class. Colinta Holdings showed a very soft poll sire to win the 19 to 20 months class. Colinta Levi (P) weighed in at 808kg and was sired by Keys All State 149X. Senior champion bull elite Kustom Made was exhibited by Glen Waldron and KIm Groner, Meandarra Qld. Kustom Made at 29 months had impressive statistics of 1218kg, 146cm2 EMA and 13/7mm cover.

Kustom Made was the senior and grand champion bull at the Melbourne Feature show in 2016. Mr Watson noted the potential expressed in his strong top line, fertility and finish. A calf at foot on a female exhibited at the 2016 National Sale won the baby heifer class in Sydney. Sara and Travis Worth exhibited Glenlea Charol 92nd (P) sired by Rangan Park Rio Bravo D15 to first place in a very strong opening class of heifers. Her dam was the Interbreed champion female at the 2013 Guyra Show. Andrew, Anne and Harris Thomspon were rewarded for their long trip from Boyup Brook, WA when their Venturon Madonna (P) won the 12 to 14 months class. Sired by Canadian sire Cedardale Zeal (P) this feminine heifer exhibited sharp lines and great depth of body. A heifer on the same truck Fairbrass Park Minnie placed third in this class for Mat Fairbrass and Aimee Court. Doug and Dani Giles also from Western Australia won the first senior class with Quicksilver Mandy L34E.

The calf at foot of the Reserve senior champion female at the Charolais National Showcase 2016 won the Heifer 16-18 months class. Moongool Thyphena 9 showed outstanding growth and thickness. Sydney Royal Carcase 2017 Grand Champion Again!

Karen Bailey reporting in “The Land” Royal Show report phrased the headline perfectly “Charolais Top Notch in the Chiller”. For the second consecutive year a purebred Charolais has taken grand champion honours. This year Travis and Sara Worth won Medium Weight carcase as well as the grand award with their red factor Charolais calf. Sired by Rosedale Bossman this carcase scored an impressive 93 points. This steer dressed out at 60.6% with a carcase weight of 249kgs and also scored a Gold Medal. The carcase scored maximum points for fat and Ribeye area. The Gold, Silver and Bronze medal system at Sydney reward carcases that meet set criteria and in 2017 there were 14 Golds, 43 Silver and 74 Bronze awards made to steers from the 252 exhibited. The medal criteria has minimum points for Market Specifications, Saleable Meat Yield and Eating Quality at each award level. Fifty six percent of all Charolais steers exhibited won a medal with 2 of the 14 Gold medals won by Charolais. The supposely Premium breed had a strike rate of 31% medal success. The other Gold medal was won by Axios Charolais, Dubbo who won a gold medal and grand champion carcase in 2016 with a half brother by the same sire Palgrove Goliath G202. Palgrove Goliaths’ EBVs indicate he is top 10% Rib and Rump fat in the breed and top 12% for EMA. This steer scored 90 points on the hook. Only five breeds had steers that won Gold Medals, Charolais and Murray Grey had the best strike ratio of Gold medals to steers shown. Charolais Silver Medals were won by Wellington High School, DSK Charolais (2) and Tractor Charolais. Bronze medals were won by Benlea Charolais, Wellington High School, and Frensham School. Four of the purebred Charolais carcases dressed over 60% with the best yield 61.8%. The average of all 14 carcases a sound 58%. If the industry moves to a yield based payment in the future our breed has a front row seat. The team of Charolais steers placed second in the Stan Hill Trophy team. Tractor Charolais also had success in the Trade Cattle secion with a Charolais Silver Calf winning the reserve champion on the hoof. In the carcase section this steers’ carcase scored 86.7 points. Congratulations to all steer exhibitors, your success continues to maintain the momentum the Charolais breed has enjoyed in carcase competions over many years.

Charolais “Silvers” Set New Breed Plan By Bobbie Hinkley, Farm Weekly There’s an air of excitement around the kitchen table as the Jenour family and its farm manager John Matthews await the arrival of their first ever Charolais silver calves. Due to hit the ground from February 11, the calves will signify the beginning of the Jenour family’s new breeding direction on their Gelorup farm. Utilising the Charolais breed to its full potential has been a long time coming for Mayne Jenour, whose mother and father, Joan and Ted, stocked the farm with a strapping herd of Herefords in the early years. But following a clean-out of the initial cattle herd, Mayne, who lives in Perth, has spent more recent times breeding Charolais-Murray Grey cross cattle after he picked up a line of cows with calves at foot about 11 years ago. Noticing the Charolais calves’ rapid growth and early maturity, Mayne invested in some Charolais bulls to put back over the cows and he did for 12 or so years until it became increasingly difficult to find Charolais-Murray Grey replacement females. So in 2015 when the Charolais-Murray Grey herd neared retirement and the last of the weaned calves were sold that November, the Jenour family had another total de-stock. The beef market had taken a turn for the better and great money was being paid for beef into the USA for which Maynes’ cattle weighed anywhere up to 900 kilograms a head. 22

He took the earnings from the cows and their weaned calves and waited for the 2016 Boyanup Special Sale where, buoyed by the market shift towards Angus females, he reinvested in 56 mated Angus heifers. At that stage beef prices hadn’t quite kicked to todays heady heights so it was a viable option and it meant the family didn’t have to compromise on its beloved Charolais bulls. Once the heifers dropped their first ever Angus calves last year, they were weaned and sold at Boyanup. The herd was re-joined to the Jenour families two Charolais bulls that were purchased from the WA Charolais Bull Sale in Brunswick in February 2016 to produce silver calves now and long into the future. Mayne and his local Landmark stock agent Jamie Abbs, trawled the sale catalogue looking for bulls with a quiet temperament, low birthweight and high 400 day weight which led Mayne to buy the two bulls which are the sires of the farms first silver calves due in February – one from Kooyong stud, and the other from Downunder stud, . “It’s an exciting time for us because we see silver calves as a smart long-term investment,” Mayne said. “They have a high-yielding carcase, are early maturing, appeal to buyers because of their uniformity in the sale pen and will be equally sought after by the lotfeeding and butchering markets.

“The popularity of the Angus breed means it will be easy for us to source replacement heifers. The addition of the Charolais sire with its substantial extra growth, early maturity and injection of hybrid vigour means we can’t wait to see what our February calving will bring.” Thanks to an outstanding feed year in 2016 the Jenour families’s cattle were in fantastic condition all year. To capitalise on this, Mayne and John decided to put the bulls out with the cows one month earlier than usual. Mayne said it means that when calving kicks off in February the cows will be at a good bodyweight for calving and milk production and depending on the timing of the break, will put them in good stead for the 2017 season. “We are particularly interested to compare the growth rates of the Charolais cross calves with that of last years purebred Angus calves,” he said. “The best of our steers last year were 381kg so we could potentially turn out vealers around 420kg with the small tweak in the time of mating and the positive influence of the Charolais genetics.” He also said selling decisions based on this seasons Silver Calves will depend on where the best money is, come weaning time. Mayne maintains that the addition of the Charolais genetics will mean a shift in his target market. He said his silver calves will be a terminal-cross and highly suited to lotfeeding and slaughtering as opposed to his recently sold purebred Angus calves which were equally suitable for slaughtering or being used as replacements. He expects more income per head will come from the faster growth rates alongside a higher yielding carcase, attributed to the infusion of the Charolais genetics.

The plan is to buy in lines of mated Angus heifers each year to use as herd replacements. Giving birth to a moderately smaller live Angus calf as a first calver, will put the females in good stead to handle a larger Charolais silver calf in their following breeding years. “In the long-term we are aiming to run a purebred herd of about 200 Angus females crossed to Charolais bulls,” Mayne said. “We have the capacity at the Gelorup farm for another 40 breeders and we have just purchased another farm at Donnybrook which will carry another 80 breeders. “But we haven’t decided what we’re going to do there yet given the way cattle prices are at the moment”. “We run the cattle in two mobs alongside some firstcross Border Leicester-Merino ewes mated to Suffolk rams and are currently concentrating on improving our pastures with increased fertiliser applications and a perennial pasture program.” Apart from the Charolais breeds hybrid vigour and hefty growth figures Mayne and his family have also stuck with Charolais all these years because they recognise the importance of a wide WA gene pool and the availability of high quality seed stock. Casino European Weaner Sale With the prospect of flooding and the after effects of extropical cyclone Debbie buyers saw the glass half full and bid strongly at the second day of Casino weaner sales with 2059 head yarded. The annual sale hosted by George and Fuhrmann, saw prices for Charolais cross steers topping at $1,664 and averaging $1,200 with heifers to $1,146. The sale report saw steers up to 400kg sell to a top of 452c/kg and average 404kg. Steers over 400kg topped at 378c/kg and averaged 374c/kg. The Charolais influence on the New South Wales North Coast was evident with pen after pen of strong topped Charolais cross calves. Demand for EU Charolais cross cattle attracted buyers from the Riverina to Queensland but most went to the Tablelands, Northwest slopes and Central West of NSW. Nathan and Kym Charters, East Coraki, sold 42 Charolais sired weaner steers from Simmental/Hereford females and won the ribbon for the champion pen, as judged by Russell Stevens, ‘Wallona’ Millmerran. The young family sold their champion pen for 408c/kg at 375kg to realise $1528 to Bob Jamieson, Inverell, and sold lighter calves to 426c/kg. Kim’s father Paul Boland, and her brother Stephen, also at East Coraki, sold 95 Charolais/ Hereford steers from Palgrove and Elstow bulls with Greg Upton, Pindari Tops, Walcha among the successful bidders.

Thank you A Lifetime Commitment - Bill Hayes May 2017 will be significant in the history of Australian Charolais as it marks the retirement of life member Bill Hayes from farming and his beloved Medburn Charolais herd. This new chapter in Bills’ life results from the sale of “Glenroy” Woomboota NSW with his Merino ewe flock and the dispersal of his Medburn Charolais herd. Medburn was a family partnership with Bill’s sister Glenys and husband Renn Ritchie. Although stepping back a pace, I am sure that Bill will maintain a strong interest in the breed that he has played a significant part in for nearly 48 years. Bill’s great grandfather, Mark Hayes bought land in the Medland Estate between Woodstock and Wollert, Victoria in 1853. Mark took a selection of 213 acres in Tooboorac in 1857 where the family originally lived in tents by the creek until Mark built “Leicester House “, a stone constructed house on this land. Mark’s son, William grew up in Tooboorac working with his Dad and seven brothers. William married Mary Bodycoat in 1876 and they had a family of ten including Bills’ father Thomas Henry. In 1882 William Hayes was granted land in Tooboorac. These 330 acres were named Medburn. Bill’s neighbours at Tooboorac in Victoria, the Shelmerdine Family leased some of his Dairy Shorthorn cross females to AI to the new European breed “Charolais” in 1969. The Hayes commercial herd had Dairy Shorthorn genetics as Tom Hayes; Bill’s father was disappointed with the growth rate of the Beef Shorthorn popular in the day. The 1970 drop calves were all sired by breed legend Sucre. Sucre to this day has over 9,000 progeny registered in the Charolais herdbook in Australia. The growth and development of these calves impressed the Hayes’ Family and the start of a lifetime of Charolais breeding began when Bill negotiated to purchase some of these 1971 half breed heifers from the Shelmerdine Family. These heifers were sired by Aquit, Colosse, Salamon and Acajou. One of Bills favourite cows Medburn April H25E, an outstanding daughter of Pinay can be traced back seven generations to one of these original half bred heifers, Concorde Marie by Acajou. Bill was further convinced of the potential of Charolais when he viewed the sire Pinegrove Jacques (NZ) sired by Apollon. Bill couldn’t believe the size and growth of this calf and it confirmed his decision to continue breeding Charolais. The breeding up process was long and Bill recalls using a large number of Sujet straws and only getting a couple of heifers. Although the Charolais cross male calves performed very well in steer and carcase competitions for Medburn. Bill was an instigator in getting local show societies to implement weight gain classes where Charolais excelled.

Results in the Ballarat Steer Competition confirmed this success. Medburn had the highest weight gaining steers in the Breaking Ox Class in both 1986 and 1987 as well as the highest increase in value in the Breaking Ox Class in 1987. The Charolais increase in value was 80% which blitzed the second place animal which achieved an increase of 59%. Early sires included New Zealand born Tipapa Lance born in 1975 and sired by Tipapa Ideal from an Apollon dam. Lance was a successful sire for Medburn with over 100 head registered by him. Tipapa Lance was the Supreme Charolais exhibit at Sydney Royal in 1978 under the judging of Martin Lenthall. Proof of Lance’s breeding ability was seen at the Royal Adelaide show in 1981. Both male champions were sons of Lance with Medburn Romsey winning senior and grand champion bull and Medburn Piobbie winning the junior championship. Bill also showed the senior and grand champion female Tipapa Othelia, an imported New Zealand female. Two steers sired by Lance were the Grand champion and reserve champion carcases in the Heathcote Show Hoof and Hook competition in 1979. cont page 30....

Other imported New Zealand sires used at Medburn include Sundowner Ranches Jackson sired by Charogal Ecossais and Longview Superstar S10 sired by CLP Pioneer 747. Medburn also imported purebred females from New Zealand including Blythe Josephine. Josephine was champion Charolais female at Melbourne Royal in 1976 and Tipapa Othelia mentioned in the prior paragraph. Other New Zealand based herds that contributed to the Medburn early breeding program include Ahuriri, Aroha, Brookfield and Longview prefixes. In Bill’s opinion the ideal sire should have structural correctness, softness, be clean in his lines and have a short gestation length. His opinion is that gestation length has a significant influence on calving ease rather than focusing solely on birth weight. When questioned on influential sires Bill mentioned the structural correctness of Carabiner. Over the years Medburn has stuck with the French and British type sires. Pinay was a sire that met these criteria well and performed exceptionally well in the Medburn herd. Talgoona Gallipoli was one of the sires that Bill acknowledges had a significant influence on the Medburn herd. Gallipoli was purchased after the 1988 Royal Melbourne where he achieved Junior and Grand Champion Charolais bull and Interbreed Junior Champion bull. Gallipoli was sired by Tattenhall Impeccable from a dam sired by Charogal Eccossais. Gallipoli sired over 150 registered calves and ranks in the top 10% for Eye Muscle Area EBV. In 1989 a block was purchased in the Womboota region of New South Wales, just north of Echuca/Moama on the River Murray to grow stock feed. This was driven by a number of dry seasons in central Victoria in the preceding years. In 1993 the land at Tooboorac was sold and Bill and the livestock shifted to “Glenroy” Womboota full time. A Lifetime commitment cont...

Starting about 30,000 years ago, movement of the Cadell Fault raised the land about 10-12 m in the Echuca region, changing the course of the Murray River. The Green Gully channel was the original course across the Cadell Block of the Murray River and the Goulburn River. After the faulting that occurred on the eastern edge of the tilt block, the ancestral Murray was diverted to the north through what is now Deniliquin, about 24,000 years ago, along the channel of the present Edward River. Looking back over his farming life Bill has no regrets about investing in Charolais. He proudly said “the introduction of Charolais into Australia challenged the other breeds. There was a bit of work to sell bulls in the early days due to the perceived calving reputation but the late 80’s and 90’s was a good time to market bulls”. A highlight of Bill’s Charolais life was the tremendous people he worked with and met along the way. Bill received great encouragement and support from Bob Barr-Smith, Mt William Charolais who in Bill’s opinion did an enormous amount of promotion of the breed. Bill also highlighted the contribution of John Sullivan, Riverglen Charolais and Peter Bondfield, Palgrove Charolais. Bill served on the Charolais Society Council from 1980 to 1992 including serving as President from 1986 to 1988. Bill recounted that he never sought to be on the Council but is very grateful for the opportunities and great experience it provided. Bill also served for an extended period of time on the Victorian State Committee. He recalled fondly meeting so many wonderful people especially during the Charolais World congresses he attended. At two of these World Congresses, England 1987 and France 1989 he had the opportunity to judge. The French judging involved over 250 junior heifers and Bill’s selection was eventually made the grand champion female. Another career highlight was also In France at the 24th World Congress. Bill was awarded the “Ordre du Charolais Francais” in the courtyard of an 11th century Chateau. This award was recognition of efforts in promoting the breed over a prolonged period. The success of the Charolais breed in Australia can be attributed to many factors with the integrity and ability of many of our founding members significant. Members such as Bill Hayes have contributed not only genetics adapted to our environment but also a high level of service to the working of the breed society and promotion. The countless hours that so many including Bill have volunteered and the personal financial contributions has ensured our future here in Australia. I am sure that Bill is that guy that never hesitated to step forward and for this we are forever indebted to the contribution Bill has made to Australian Charolais and the agricultural industry.

When talking with Bill his pride in the Medburn Merino ewe flock is obvious. The flock has been a closed ewe flock since 1938. Prior to this the Hayes family used to purchase F1 ewes from Newmarket and rail then to Tooboorac. After experiencing issues with footrot the decision was to purchase Merino ewes and close the ewe flock. Stud rams have been purchased from Wanganella for thirty five years. Bill has then bred his own replacement flock rams using these sires. Medburn weaners average 18 micron and adult sheep 21 micron. Bill recounts he was an early adopter of selling under the new micron testing system. Bill crutched all his own sheep for 53 years until in his seventies which gave him the opportunity to handle the entire flock annually.

World Charolais Technical Conference Host: Charolais Charbray Herdbook de Mexico, Monterrey, Mexico After presenting a superb World Congress in 2016, the Charolais Charbray Herdbook de Mexico hosted the 2017 World Charolais, Charbray Technical Conference based around Monterrey Mexico. Monterrey is the capital and largest city of the north-eastern state of Nuevo Leon with a population of over 5 million inhabitants. Monterrey is located in northeast Mexico, at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The Santa Catarina Riverâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;dry most of the year on the surface but with flowing underground waterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;bisects Monterrey from East to West, thus separating the city into north and south halves. Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain) dominates the view at the east of the city and is considered a major symbol of the city. From Monterrey to Texas is approximately 230km. The uninterrupted settlement of Monterrey started in 1596, with its founding by Diego de Montemayor. In the years after the Mexican War of Independence, Monterrey became an important business center. The Monterrey Steel Foundry operated in the centre of town from 1900 to 1986. Since then the old steel mill has been renovated into a function centre. Horno 3 (Steel Furnace Number 3) also houses a museum and gallery space and truly is one of the most amazing dinner venues I have seen. During the Closing ceremony dinner, a video was shown with a light show of the significance of the Steel Foundry to Monterrey with steam and sparks adding to the realism.

The headquarters of the Charolais Charbray Herdbook de Mexico is located in Guadalupe, a municipality within the Monterrey metropolitan area. The night we arrived the local football (read soccer) team were playing in the Mexican league grand final and the local streets seemed deserted as passionate supporters watched intensely. The first night was a welcome meet and greet and with many new faces in World Charolais administration it offered a great chance to meet new representatives as well as renew friendships. Delegates from nine countries, Mexico, United States, Canada, Guatemala, Ireland, Britain, France, Czech Republic and Australia attended. Day one started with the Inauguration Ceremony and then each attending nation presented an overview of their marketing program in their country. We need to extend a huge thankyou to our real time interpreter Rosa. Her efforts allowed us to follow in real time the Spanish presentations. Rosa also translated the various English dialects to Spanish with great skill. After each presentation delegates could ask questions and the discussion was lively and highly educational. Common messages emerged from all the presentations with promotion expenditure in the range of 10 to 30% of most attending societies expenditure.

Our Australian presentation was well received and started the conversation. We focussed on our marketing messages including the Silver Calf promotion, our print materials and also our use of Social media. Our slogan of “Cross into Profit” was very well received and received favourable comment as well as our new promotion slogans on brochures “Weigh ahead of the competition”. Social media emerged as a consistent trend across all countries highlighting the power of social media platforms. In the Canadian presentation, Manager Mel Reekie provided the following statistics for Social Media. Facebook has 1.94 billion users worldwide monthly (May 2017), 1.28 billion people log on to Facebook daily, 300 million photographs are uploaded per day with 25 – 35 year olds the common demographic. Mel Reekie highlighted the need for one on one interaction and the value in old fashioned conversation. The Canadian marketing message is featured on Charolais Be Identifiable. In Canada black Angus have a green ear tag marketing promotion and the Canadian Charolais message is that no tag is required due to the ability of Charolais to stamp their progeny. Mel also identified one advantage Canada has with a national publication “The Beef Magazine”. She highlighted that the circulation of this publication is over 15,500 cattle breeders nationwide and that 88% of readers had indicated they had taken action as a result of articles in the publication. Canada has 22,000 females in their enrolment program and this equates to approx. 13,200 registrations a year. In the USA, Charolais International has 60,000 Charolais females in their inventory registering 36,000 calves per annum. One of the major promotion efforts in the United States is their junior program.

David Hobbs outlined that over 700 competitors would be attending their junior nationals and that over $45,000 would be presented as educational scholarships. David also showed some Charolais packaging that contained promotional items (DVD, USB) that really caught the eye and invited you to investigate further. Charolais in the United States had also taken time on the American Rancher TV channel with very good success. David also commented on how the cattle industry is a people business and the need to cultivate trust and communication both ways between clients and suppliers. New Charolais Chief Executive in Great Britain, Peter Phythian discussed developing relationships with the processing sector and sectors of the industry beyond the farm gate. British Charolais are also increasing the frequency of their print publications as well as increasing social media programs. Peter has a background in agribusiness and the new marketing strategies he outlined for the UK were very interesting with a focus on developing relationships. Their programs also included video clips and targeting commercial operators in specific areas. British Charolais have 1472 members registering 6,800 calves a year. Manager of Irish Charolais Nevan McKieran started his presentation with some interesting stats. Irish Charolais has 2,500 members registering 7,000 calves a year. Compare to our data where we have just under 400 members including youth registering over 9,000. Irish Charolais had 50% of the market share commercially however this has dropped to 37%. Irish Charolais host a stand promoting the breed at the highly regarded Ploughmans Championships where some 220,000 visitors attend.

A high percentage of promotion in Ireland is undertaken by eight regional clubs. Ireland is served by two major rural publications and the Charolais Society advertises weekly focusing on recent market prices achieved by Charolais sired animals. Nevan also outlined the Introduction of the Irish Whole Herd Recording Scheme (ICBF). Each pedigree herd receives an official visit per year. All animals 1 -149 days of age are weighed. All animals 150 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 700 days weighed and visually scored. All cows sucking a calf must be weighed. ICBF pays 50% of the cost of weighing the cows in the herds first visit. The farmer pays Euro $45 call out fee and Euro $5/animal. Kamil Malat presented for the Czech Republic with some interesting stats. Prior to 1990 there was virtually no beef breeding industry in the country. Now there are 210,000 suckler cows although not all of these are beef. In the Herd books there are 23,000 cows. There are twelve main beef breeds including Charolais which is the number 1 breed. There are 186 Charolais breeders with 9,047 herd book females. The Czech Beef Breeders Association was formed in 1990 and this body co-ordinates selection programs for all beef breeds. Breeders can only buy semen from approved sires. Interesting 80% of weaned cattle are exported from the Czech Republic with Turkey and the Baltic countries significant markets.

Clement Perrodin from Herdbook Charolais in France reported that there are 50,000 calves registered in France. Of the 4 million beef breeding cows across the country 1.5 million are Charolais. He reported that there is very little crossbreeding in France with the emphasis on purebreds. There are several Charolais branded beef ranges in France. French consumers are very aware of what a Charolais is. Clement highlighted the importance of showing cattle in France as a breed promotion. He reported that over 10,000 animals are exhibited each year and all official judges are accredited. The champion bull from Paris had received over 50,000 likes on Facebook highlighting the power of Facebook and Social media. The main messages the French Herdbook promote are Charolais is a modern breed with good maternal traits; they are profitable due to their growth and very docile. The quality of the Charolais beef is also well promoted in France. Cesar Cantu Martinez presented on behalf of Mexico to the conference. He advised Mexico had 472 members with 38,000 active females and in 2016 registered 10,251 calves. Cesar told the group that the Mexican cattle industry needed to become more efficient as the need to feed the world increased. The first day of the conference also included three presentations from our hosts on technical topics.

The first was presented by Dr Moises Montano Bermudez on the Genetic Evaluation of Charolais and Charbray in Mexico. The evaluations run twice yearly and the 2017 evaluation provided EPD for 6,407 sires that had progeny recorded in 2015/2016. In 2001 the evaluation considered 15,371 birthweights which increased to 211,921 birthweights in the 2017 evaluation. Traits with data in the performance analysis include Peso al nacimiento (birthweight), Peso al destete ( weaning weight), Peso al ano ( yearling weight), Circunferencia Escrotal (Scroctal Circ), Talla (Frame), Permanencia (Stayability), Fertilidad en vaquillas (Female fertility). In the last evaluation 114 trait leaders for four traits were identified. One hundred (88%) of these trait leaders were Mexican born sires and 14 came from international herd books. The genetic base for their analysis is 2005 born animals. cont page 40....

Dr Angel Rios Utrera presented on the Genetic Diversity in Mexican Charolais which was extremely interesting. His presentation was based on research of inbreeding in the population for Charolais between 1982 and 2016 and Charbray 1987 to 2016. He reported that Mexican Charolais has sufficient diversity to enable genetic selection although Mexican Charbray needed more diversity. He reported that there are low levels of inbreeding in the Mexican Charolais population. Slides were presented showing the most influential sires and these included Till, Ijoufflu, Jumper and Nevers which would be familiar to Australian breeders. To round off the technical presentations Dr Luis Lopez Bustamante reported on the Young Sire Selection program in Mexico to identify and promote the best of the young sires in the breed. His talk highlighted the difficulty in finding sires that excelled in all traits. To cap off an excellent day Ben Harman presented on behalf of the next World Congress hosts, Sweden. Swedenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Congress is to be held from the 29th June to the 7th July, 2018. With a free night a large group on the advice of our British counterparts headed to the Sonora Grill Prime Restaurant. If you like meat then this is a must visit in San Pedro, Monterrey. An amazing space with excellent service the waiters bring out samples of the meat on offer to assist in making your choice. Not being a food critic, words escape me to do this restaurant justice, if you find yourself in Monterrey, just go.

Day two saw buses arrive and a drive through Monterrey and out into the countryside. Our original itinerary was adjusted due to overnight rainfall and we arrived at Rancho Las Adjuntas at Salinas Victoria, Nuevo Leon. Ing Francisco Elizondo (well known to many Australians as Paco) gave us a presentation on Mexican feedlotting and plans to run 2,400 breeding females in a feedlot. The goal is to produce even lines consistently through the year for marketing advantages. The females would be Charolais based with Red Angus sires used. All females would calve and rear their calves in the feedlot. After lunch we toured the breeding herd and sires of Ganaderia Torres. At all the ranches we visited strong warnings were given about rattlesnakes as it was their breeding season. Good to know!. Ranches Las Adjuntas was 1000 hectares with a semi arid climate. Temperatures range from below zero in winter to above 40 degrees C in summer. The predominant pasture on this ranch was buffel grass. The ranch runs 250 Charolais and 40 Charbray females. Strong emphasis is placed on use of information including EPDs. The herd was very functional and the temperament outstanding. In the sire pens we saw some very impressive individuals of both breeds. Day three saw the tour arrive at Rancho San Juan on the outskirts of Monterrey. Arnulfo de la Garza Montemayor explained his breeding program highlighting the strong emphasis on performance data.

All below average individuals are removed from the breeding program and graphs provided showed the progress the herd had achieved in its breeding objectives. Arnulfo explained that 90% of his bulls went to commercial breeders and he works closely with his clients and appreciates receiving client feedback. He focuses on birth weight for his clients. San Juan is very impressive with outstanding facilities. Cattle from both the Charolais and Charbray programs were penned for inspection along with a number of sires and young bulls. After a lunch and band performance the tour headed to the Union Ganadera Regional de Nuevo Leon (Fairground) for a Charbray presentation. Four heifers were paraded that were sired by a Charbray from a Hereford dam. The Charbray had stamped them that no visual trace of Herefords could be seen. The display showed the various percentage Charbrays use in Mexico where the breed is stabilised at 62.5% Charolais & 37.5 Brahman genetics. Day Four had the tour heading for a trip around some of the Monterrey highlights including a spectacular view from a lookout. We then saw some of the inner city highlights before boating down a canal through stunning parklands to Horno 3, the converted steel mill that would be the venue for our final dinner. We then returned to the fairground for talks from the University Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) on their research programs and feed efficiency trials. Day Five we returned to the Showground for the judging of the male Charolais as well as the Annual General Meeting of Charolais International. This meeting was very productive and one of the major outcomes was co-ordinating international youth. The plan is that each country will take turns to host international youth visitors at the one youth event. International Charolais will subsidize travel costs for travelling participants. The first Youth event will be hosted by Canada in 2018. Sweden was confirmed as the host of the 2018 World Congress with Australia in 2020. Ireland is evaluating hosting the 2019 World Technical Conference with Czech Republic considering 2021. That evening the final closing ceremony was held in the spectacular Horno 3 renovated steel mill. Country presentations were made to our hosts and a great night was enjoyed. The next morning delegates had the option of attending Charbray judging or starting the homeward journey. The organisation of this event was outstanding and special thanks must go to the organising committee, Charolais Charbray Herdbook de Mexico staff, our interpreters, and all that came together to showcase Mexican Charolais and Charbray. This was a great experience to not only evaluate Mexican Charolais ad Charbray but to network and establish working relationships with our international Charolais fraternity. The conversations on the bus, meals and other opportunities to discuss projects and mutual cooperation can only assist in making our breed the best it can be.

Charolais Is The Ideal Fit at Nillup By Courtney Walsh, Farm Weekly He might have been talked into it initially, but Peter Reid, DJ & HM Reid, Nillup, believes Charolais are the way to go. Peter and his wife Helen run a breeding herd of 140 AngusFriesian first cross females on their property at Nillup, east of Alexandra Bridge in Western Australia. But it’s the Charolais bulls that have impact according to Peter who has been buying sires from childhood friend Barry Bell, Bardoo Charolais stud, Capel, for many years. Peter recalls “initially when I moved from Simmentals to the Angus-Friesian first crosses I thought I better do the friend thing and let Barry talk me into buying one of his bulls. But his bulls have been such excellent doers for me, now I wouldn’t dream of buying from anywhere else.” Peter said he had tried a couple of other studs, but none produced calves comparative to the consistent quality he saw from the Bardoo sires. “Charolais bulls are an ideal fit for the Angus-Friesian first-cross breeders because they add condition to the calves,” he said. “And the calves hold that condition really well. They grow quickly, nicely put on weight, have no health problems and they’ve got a good temperament – but I better not go on too much or those bulls will get too dear.” When looking for a new Charolais sire Peter seeks length and depth of body, as well as strength in the hindquarters. “The length and depth of body is important but that width across the back is crucial in my opinion – you want it all full of meat,” he said. “I also like a bit of height in my bulls. And I’ve found there’s really no chance of going wrong on those fronts when you’re buying Charolais.” The Charolais bulls go in with the cows on rotation at a ratio of about 1:35 for nine weeks at the start of April for a January start to the drop, while a Monterey Angus bull is used over the heifers.

Peter said ensuring the cows that were in calf have the best chance of avoiding calving issues was achieved by putting them on a steep block of leased blue gum plantation where they have to walk a lot to find feed. “All of that walking keeps them in good condition and means the calf inside doesn’t get too huge,” he said. “And I really believe that exercise makes a lot of difference to calving ease”. “The Angus-Friesian milk and mothering traits combined with the fast growth rates of the Charolais means the calves make up for it once they’re on the ground. Peter said there was a bit of temptation to retain the best of the second-cross heifers because they held their condition so well and he was toying around with the idea of introducing a Hereford bull from Rob Francis’ Yallaroo stud to those heifers for added hybrid vigour. “I haven’t made up my mind on that front yet, but even if I do decide to get one of those Herefords, I definitely won’t be scaling back the Charolais here.” Usually Peter buys in 10-15 Angus-Friesian unmated heifers at the sales to take the place of the outgoing breeders. “Buying in PTIC heifers isn’t worth it in my opinion,” he said. “I’d prefer to join them here to the bulls I’ve chosen even though it might take a little bit longer to get your money back.” Calves are sold to Woolworths, straight off their mothers at around nine months old. The first load of the year that went to Woolworths in mid October 2016 had an average dressed weight of 267 kilograms and the second load averaged 265kg dressed weight. Peter said he was playing around with keeping a few steers on and growing them out, to sell in March and September to see how prices go. Graham and Katrina Blanch led an initiative to support the Royal Flying Doctor Services (RFDS) and Lifeflight at the 7th Annual Charnelle Invitation Female Sale. The Blanch Family donated Charnelle Digna 154 (P), a heifer with an outstanding pedigree with all proceeds going to the RFDS and Lifeflight. The Royal Flying Doctor and Lifeflight are crucial to rural based communities and provide life saving services. The Cooper Family, CCJs Charolais purchased this weaner heifer for $3,750. Several genetic packages sold with all proceeds donated to the RFDS and Lifeflight. Valley View Charolais sold a package of 3 embryos for $400 each to David Ellis from the joining of Triple J Pacman and Palgrove Estella 214. Valley View also sold 4 embryos from THW Friesia to Mitchell Lollbeck for $300 each. David and Prue Bondfield offered 10 straws of Palgrove Koshe (P/S) selling for $500 a straw to John Henry. Bettafield Charolais sold 10 straws in Bettafield Dynamite to James Pisaturo for $150 a straw and Caitlin Warner paid $230 a straw for ten straws of CML Distinction 318A offered by Charnelle. All other genetic lots had 10% of their proceeds added to the charity fundraiser and Elders donated their commission on the charity lots. In total over $19,000 was raised for these two essential services to the Australian community.

Vale: Harold Adolphe Seeley A.M. 12th March 1930 – 7th May 2017 Australian Charolais has been fortunate that early breeders were tenacious in promoting the breed. One of these drivers was Harold Seeley A.M. who was an early adopter of the benefits of the Charolais breed. Harold was made a life member of the Charolais Society in 1992 in recognition of his enormous contribution to the success of Charolais in Australia. Harold passed away on the 7th May 2017 and as a Society we are indebted to his efforts in promoting our breed. Harold’s Farm Manager for 32 years, Duncan Newcomen wrote the following on Harold’s contribution to Australian agriculture and Charolais; “Harold Seeley was a pioneer of the Charolais breed in Australia. Harold was one of the first to bring Charolais into Australia in the late 60s and 70s. He purchased Charolais females in Great Britain, flew them to New Zealand where he purchased a property and bred the progeny from these females there. Progeny were then flown to Australia. In those days you were not allowed to bring livestock directly into Australia from Great Britain. These cattle became the foundation of Harold’s first Australian Charolais stud called Woodlands, based on his property at Flowerdale, Victoria. His later Charolais stud was known as Ashwood Park and was sadly dispersed two years ago due to Harold’s health. 48

It wasn’t plain sailing though, in the mid 1970s right through to the early 90s the Charolais breed struggled to be accepted in the Australian cattle beef industry. Harold’s faith in the breed never faltered but many others unfortunately did and fell by the wayside. This made Harold more determined to succeed as he was convinced that the Charolais breed had a big part to play in the Australian Beef industry. Harold showed his cattle at all major Royals in southern Australia very successfully and entered carcase competitions both grass and grain fed with Charolais cross steers. Harold holds the record at the Royal Melbourne for 13 Grand Champion carcase awards a record that will stand for a long time. He had his :on farm” annual bull sale for 30 plus years, he attended field days with his cattle and took any opportunity to promote the Charolais breed whenever he could. Harold realised a change was needed not only in the type of Charolais, but in the marketing strategy, he set about scanning over two hundred Charolais cross calves each year for eye muscle and more importantly fat covering and weight. Over a period of time he earmarked the bulls that carried these traits, then he set about selling the Charolais cross calves through the Yea weaner sale and various other store sales.

Up until this time Charolais cross calves were rarely seen in sale yards as most went over the hook and they often struggled for fat coverage. Harold changed this, his Charolais cross calves gained great acceptance at the Yea weaner sales topping this sale 9 years in a row. His bull sales also doubled and from his hard work Charolais cross calves receive a premium all over Southern Australia, more so at Yea sale yards which host three Charolais bull sales each year and a continuous flow of Charolais cross calves through out the year. Harold had a love of technology and was a pioneer in embryo transplants having his own center at his property at Flowerdale. He had great faith in young people and employed both male and female youth and encouraged them to make something of their lives, helping them in many ways especially in education. Harold’s legacy can be seen throughout the Yea district and further afield in Victoria and southern Australia with many commercial cattle producers using Charolais bulls and Charolais Studs using bloodlines based on Woodland’s and Ashwood Park sires and females. Harold was a much loved and highly respected member of the Victorian Region of the Charolais Society. We will miss him greatly in the Victorian Region Charolais Society.

Breeding for Polledness Polledness, or the absence of horns, is an important trait being actively selected for within many beef breeding programs across Australia. Breeding polled cattle provides a permanent solution to many of the problems associated with horned cattle, including easier handling of stock, reduced bruising, reduced risk of injury to stock handlers, reduced labour costs and reduced concerns regarding the animal welfare issues associated with dehorning. Importantly, breeding for polled cattle is not as simple as just using visually polled bulls within a breeding program and for this reason, a number of tools now exist that enable producers to transition to a polled herd relatively quickly. One of these tools is the Australian Poll Gene Marker test that was initially released by the Beef CRC in 2010. This DNA based test has recently been greatly enhanced by the CSIRO, with the assistance of funding from Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), and now has considerably greater accuracy than the previous test.

THE GENETICS OF POLLEDNESS Unlike many traits of importance to beef producers, polledness is a qualitative trait controlled entirely by genetics, with non-genetic factors having no influence on the polled status of an animal. Animals can either be polled, horned or scurred (small horns not attached to the skull), although considerable variation in expression is observed within these three different phenotypes. The genetics of polledness is thought to be controlled by only a few genes, with the polled gene thought to be located in a region of the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s DNA on chromosome 1. Two basic alleles (ie. different forms of gene) have been identified for the polled gene, the polled allele and the horned allele, with each animal inheriting two alleles for polledness, one coming from each parent. The polled allele is dominant over the horned allele, so that only animals which are homozygous horned (ie. inherit two horned alleles - referred to as hh) will be horned. Animals that are homozygous polled (ie. inherit two polled alleles - referred to as PP) or are heterozygous polled (ie. inherit one polled and one horned allele - referred to as Pp) will be either polled or scurred. The scurs gene (Sc) interacts with the polled gene and is only expressed when the poll allele is present (e.g. in animals with the genotype PP or Ph).

BREEDING FOR POLLEDNESS / THE THEORY Because animals possess two alleles for polledness, it is possible that their phenotype does not reflect their underlying genotype. For example a polled or scurred animal may be heterozygous polled (Ph), possessing one polled and one horned allele, or homozygous polled, possessing two polled alleles. In scenarios where the polled animal is heterozygous polled, their progeny will on average, inherit a horned allele, rather than a polled allele, 50% of the time. The effect of this when breeding for polledness is demonstrated in the following scenario where two polled bulls, one being homozygous polled and the other heterozygous polled, are joined to a herd of horned cows.

By contrast, in the second scenario, a heterozygous polled sire (Ph) is joined to horned cows (hh), with 50% of the resulting offspring being polled or scurred and 50% being horned (hh). If the resultant polled heifers (Ph) are then mated to a heterozygous polled sire (Ph), 75% of the resultant progeny will be either polled or scurred and 25% will be horned. Importantly, only 25% of the progeny will be homozygous polled and no longer carrying the horned gene (PP).

In the first scenario, a homozygous polled sire (PP) is joined to horned cows (hh) with the resulting offspring all being heterozygous polled, and being all either polled or scurred. If the resulting polled or scurred heifers (i.e. 100% of heifers) are then mated with a homozygous polled sire (PP) then all offspring will also be either polled or scurred, with 50% of them homozygous polled and no longer carrying the horned gene.

The expression of the scurs gene is also sex dependant, so that males only need one copy of the scurs allele to be phenotypically expressed (Scsc or ScSc) whereas females need two copies (ScSc).

Breeding for Polledness BREEDING FOR POLLEDNESS / THE PRACTICAL Breeders wishing to increase the number of polled animals within their herd can achieve the desired outcome in a variety of ways, however the pathway chosen will significantly affect both the time taken and the cost that is incurred. As with other traits, individual sires contribute proportionally more to the genetics of the herd and so careful selection of sires with polled genetics results in the biggest gains. This may involve use of polled bulls as a basic principle, but as the previous scenarios indicate, where available, use of sires that have been identified by a DNA test as being homozygous polled will greatly increase the speed by which a herd can transition to a polled herd. Breeders who are able to apply a level of selection pressure to their cow herd can also use the same philosophies that have been outlined for bulls. Retaining only polled or scurred females will increase the frequency of polled genes within the herd, while giving priority to polled females that have been identified by DNA test as being homozygous polled will maximise the rate of polled gene introgression into the herd.

Importantly, breeding for polledness should always be balanced with selection for other traits of economic and functional importance within the breeding objective. Simply selecting for polledness without any consideration of other important traits is not recommended as it may potentially compromise the genetics of animals for these other traits. DNA TESTS FOR POLLEDNESS A number of DNA tests are available that enable breeders to determine whether a polled animal is homozygous polled or heterozygous polled. The precise location of the polled gene has not yet been identified, and so the DNA tests indirectly detect the polled gene though linked gene markers. No markers for the scurred gene have been identified as yet. The tests currently available are predominantly available through the Animal Genetics Lab (AGL) at the University of Queensland and Zoetis Animal Genetics. Both the AGL and Zoetis Animal Genetics offer the Australian Poll Gene Marker Test initially developed by the Beef CRC, while the AGL also offer tests developed in the United States by GeneSeek (previously Igenity). A number of overseas DNA labs also offer tests in some breeds.

AUSTRALIAN POLL GENE MARKER TEST The Australian Poll Gene Marker test was initially developed by the Beef CRC and released to industry in 2010. The initial test was based on a single DNA marker and worked very well in some breeds, but not so well in others. The test was further developed by the CSIRO, with funding assistance from Meat and Livestock Australia, and a greatly improved test was released in 2013. The improved Australian Poll Gene Marker test uses the same marker as the initial test but also incorporates information from nine other markers close by in the genome. The genotype information from all ten markers is combined to create a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;haplotypeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to more accurately track the origin of alleles and associate them with being horned or polled. The additional marker information increases the proportion of animals for which the test returns an informative result, and also increases the accuracy of those results. The Australian Poll Gene Marker test can be used with a high degree of confidence across a range of tropical and temperate breeds including Brahman, Santa Gertrudis, Tropical Composite, Brangus, Droughtmaster, Hereford, Limousin, Shorthorn, Simmental and Charolais.

Research conducted to date has demonstrated that the test will return an informative result for the vast majority of animals tested. The table below outlines the number of animals by breed that were tested in the research project, and the proportion of animals for which the test returned an informative result. Breed

The test has potential application in a variety of other breeds, including cross-bred herds, and producers should contact the service laboratories for advice on the utility of the test for their herd. For those animals where the test returns an informative result, this result is highly accurate (above 98% in the majority of cases). Only results with an accuracy value above 90% will be returned to the breeder.

For those animals where the test cannot return an informative result (that is, the accuracy is not above 90%), no result will be returned. The cost of the test will be set by the individual service providers but is expected to be in the magnitude of $20-$30 per animal and can be performed using hair, blood, tissue or semen samples. An example of the test result is displayed in Figure 1. The results will describe the percentage chance of the most likely genotype, with the possible genotypes being reported including homozygous polled (PP), heterozygous polled (Ph) or homozygous horned (hh). The accuracy of the test result will be reported alongside the most likely genotype. This accuracy will range from 90% to 99%. For animals where the test cannot return an informative result (that is, the accuracy of the prediction is less than 90%) the result will be returned as ND (Not Determined).

Now in the third year the Harvey Beef Gate 2 Plate Challenge is keenly contested amongst Western Australian beef producers. Competitors enter a team of three owner bred cattle (2 steers & 1 heifer). All cattle enter the feedlot the same day and are fed the same. Heifers are fed for 76 days and steers for 88 days. Each animal is scored individually with 50 points allocated for feedlot performance, 50 points for processing and 25 points for MSA grading. In overall second place was Willyung Farms, Willyung with Charolais/Sussex cross animals. Owners Narelle and Sandy Lyon were pleased with their win “putting your cattle up to be benchmarked against others is a great thing, you can learn a lot and the feedback you receive is outstanding”. This team scored very highly in the feedlot performance section of the trial. Analysis indicates the three animals averaged a feedlot gain of 2.03kg/day. In fourth place was a team from the Campbell Family, Keysbrook with Charolais /Angus Silver Calves. Another team from Willyung Farms sired by Chaorlais placed sixth overall giving Charolais influences three of the top six placings. Harvest Road Beef general manager Kim McDougall commented that “this competition has real commercial relevance and to see prizes going to producers across the state and across a variety of breeds is pleasing. In the commercial world it is not just one breed that dominates, it is made up of many breeds”. Sourced from Farm Weekly .

Charolais Infused cattle once again performed strongly at the 2017 Australian National Field Days Feedlot trial. The cattle were grain fed at Gundamain Feedlot via Forbes or grass fed on pastures in the Orange District. In a change to the competition format, teams of six were split two ways, with 4 head entering the feedlot and 2 steers completing the trial on grass. Steers were awarded points for Weight Gain, Live Assessment, Carcase, and Meat yield. Seventeen teams from various parts of NSW competed in the competition. In the Live weight gain on grass section Violet Hills came second with Charolais x Red Angus Steers, whilst Millner Ag came 3rd with their Charolais x Angus. In the Live Assessment aspect of the competition Millner AG finished first with Charolais /Angus Steers. These steers did not let the judges down as they went on to win the carcase section as well Charolais x Angus Steers took out both 1st and 2nd in the Carcase section of the trial with a team exhibited by Robbie Millner of Millner AG coming First and Michael Millner coming second, less than one point behind, both teams with Rosedale Charolais Blood. In the Saleable Meat Yield Section Violet Hills Charolais finished first with a pen of Charolais Steers. A steer bred by Michael Millner also won the best Individual Steer on the day.

Powerhouse Weaners The 11th Annual Powerhouse Liveweight Weaner Sale at Gunnedah Saleyards is always a great promotion of the advantages of “Crossing into Profit” with Charolais. With some 3,500 weaners including over 1,000 Charolais Silver Calves on offer, these well respected calves attract attention from along the east coast. Charolais calves topped this years’ sale returning $1516 head at 462c/kg. The sale averaged $1059 showing a great premium for the Charolais influence. The sale conducted by Davidson, Cameron & Co was supported by the NSW Region of the Charolais Society.

Drought Uncertainty

Jeff, Jacqui and Brendan Dann, Daldowie, Wandoan Qld made the decision to sell 553 steer and 551 heifer weaners to offset the drought on their property. With winter approaching and only 63.5mm for summer the Danns thought it was too dry to follow their usual marketing program. Selling through Roma on the 4th April the family averaged 437c/kg for their steers averaging 228kg. The overall steer offering averaged 419c/kg. The Dann heifers sold to average 367c/kg to return $793 head.

Minnie-Vale Support Youth Sue and Jason Salier, Minnie-Vale Charolais are the 2017 donors of the Charolais Youth Development Heifer. Jason and Sue consider the opportunity to give back to youth programs an honour, and have generously given from the top of the replacement pen. The decision to purchase and commit to Charolais has led to the Salier family becoming quite extended. Sue and her late husband Doug founded their Minnie-Vale stud in 1972 and along the journey have established lasting friendships that feel like family. Sue said “Charolais have been a large part of our life, the people have been extraordinary, really an extension of the family sharing a love in the breeding of the cattle, we have loved working for the breed”. Doug and Sue have passed on this love of the breed to their children with Jason now heavily involved in the stud’s development. Over the years Doug, Sue and Jason have never been shy in stepping up to work on committees, attend field days or promote the breed. After a few moves the Minnie-Vale herd now calls the historically significant beef property Bexley between Narrabri and Bingara home. Bexley was home to the influential Bexley Hereford stud and award and name cards from those days still can be found in the old stud buildings. Bexley is approximately 2,700 acres of undulating country. The country is well looked after, encouraging natural pasture and improved pasture with an annual fertiliser program and normally a 31 inch rainfall.

The stud was established through artificial insemination programs using French and British bloodlines, after very slow and deliberate selection and grading up process. Some of the bulls used originally included “Absalon,” “Aga Khan,” “Bent Frederick,” “Apollon,” “Carabinier,” “Charmant,” “Kersknowe Festival,” “Mearns Enterprise,” and “Salamon,” predominantly French. The graded up breeding herd from these bloodlines was then infused by a Mandalong bull, “Mandalong Layman,” the first polled bull ever sold by Rick Pisaturo at his St. Mary’s Sale. In 1980, twelve three quarter grade cows by “Carabanier” were purchased, boosting the volume capacity of our then female herd. Embryo Transfer has been used successfully in developing the herd Over a period of time, both out cross females (very few) and bulls have been purchased from selected studs, including Mandalong, Ballengara, Ayr, Airlie, Summer, Palgrove, Hillside, Gunnadoo, Cobrabald, Glendyr, Manaree and more recently Gunnedoo, Gobongo, Kyana, Vee Jay and Greenwood, Fernvale, ANC to compliment the Minnie-Vale herd producing the cattle you see before you today. Sue and Jason both express that a large component of their success has been listening to their clients and offering bulls that suit their clients’ needs. Jason commented “our female base has contributed to our success, they have bred cattle with softness, moderate frame and beautiful skin types”. Sue said “we have never chased trends” and this is reflected in the herds’ consistency driving round them. The stud has achieved some tremendous results breeding bulls such as Minnie-Vale Sundance, the Interbreed Champion Bull at the 1999 Ekka. Sundance was sold for the then record price of $22,000 to Moongool herd where his performance and predictability has been phenomenal. Minnie-Vale Thunderbolt was a member of the team that won the 2000 Sydney Royal Hordern Trophy and sold for $15,000 to Waterford and Delconnen studs. Minnie-Vale still hold the record price for a sire at the National Sale when Minnie-Vale Deputy sold for $35,000 to Rosedale stud. Deputy went on to perform exceptionally well in the Rosedale herd. The list of successes goes on with sires like Lancelot and Lincoln coming to mind and highlight the success of sires bred at Minnie-Vale over an extended time.

More recently Winchester Peacemaker has performed for the stud and at nine years of age looks incredible. Sue and Jason are very excited about their first drop of Palgrove Jaguar calves. Minnie-Vale have also retained home bred sires to complement the herd’s development. We are privileged that a stud such as Minnie-Vale have chosen to support Youth development in the Charolais breed and extend our appreciation to Sue and Jason.

SUCRE NO MORE: Charolais Newsletter August 1972-

First bull to sire Charolais calves in Australia, Sucre, has been put down through old age. Bred by M. Emile Maurice he stood at Avoncroft Cattle Breeders Station at Bromsgrove who now have two young bulls from the Maurice herd Faucon and Francois owned by Dan Evans. But there are still 22,000 doses of Sucre in the pot at Avoncroft. Ed Note: Scure is number 1 sire in the Australian herdbook based on calf registration with 9,231 calves recorded.

Mt William 3rd Annual Sale Advert Charolais Newsletter November 1972-

“During the past year Mt William Charolais have topped the vealer pens at New Market, Hamilton and Horsham. This stud also exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Steer in the Fat Cattle Section at Royal Melbourne Show. At 366 days this steer weighed live 1034lbs and produced a carcass of 667lb or 64.5%. It also had the highest daily carcass gain of any steer in the show.” 58

“In wishing you all a Happy New Year, I would like to reflect just a little on the year that is rapidly drawing to a close. I am quite sure that 1972 will in the future be known as “The Year of the Charolais”. It is the year that Charolais made their first real impact , not from what they have done overseas, but from what they have done here in Australia. Charolais were exhibited for the first time at Royal Shows in the stud classes and were the subject of much favourable comment. I would like to inform you all that I was exceptionally proud of the fact that it was here in Sydney that the first Charolais were exhibited. “Charolais Cross were exhibited in the Steer and Carcass Shows and started to win the Carcass section of these Shows and made their presence felt. This is just the beginning.”

Outstanding auction debut FIVE CHAROLAIS GROSS $166,000 Last week’s sale of purebred and Charolais infused cattle at Glen Parc, Mittagong NSW marked one of the most spectacular beef cattle auctions held in Australia. The sale, which grossed $270,250 for 66 head, represented an outstanding debut for purebred Charolais offered at auction in Australia. Four purebred bulls and heifers and one 15/16th bull grossed $166,000 to average $33,200. The 15/16th (fourth cross) sire, Sundowner Ranch Giant, topped the sale at $48,000 – an Australasian record. He was sold for International Genetics Ltd, Hamilton, New Zealand to Mr Trevor Cottee, Tallagalla, Samford, Qld. S. Ranch Giant, buy Carabinier, is recognised purebred by the Australian Charolais Society. He is 14 months old and at October 29 last year weighed 908 lb with a daily weight gain of 3.11 lb. Second top price of $37,000 was paid for an eight-monthold purebred bull also by Carabinier. He was sold for International Genetics to Carlton stud, Picton, NSW. But perhaps the most outstanding sale of the day was $36,000 paid for a nine-month-old heifer, Grace of White Valley, which also set an Australasian record The heifer by Sucre was sold for Mr A.K. Finlayson, White Valley, Mossburn, NZ, to Carlton stud. A second purebred heifer was sold to American millionaire, Mr Bunker Hunt for $24,000. Mr Hunt recently bought the jockey, George Moore’s property at Coolac, NSW. The heifer is by Overhall Eruption and was sold for International Genetics, Hamilton New Zealand. Mr Gordon Ferguson who recently dispersed his Charaboun Droughtmaster stud at Toogoolawah, Qld paid $21,000 for a six-month-old purebred bull, Goliath of White Valley by Acajou. He was sold for Mr A.K. Finlayson. Mr Ferguson has established Charisma Charolais stud on the property. Gunn Developments, owned by Australian Wool Board chairman, Sir William Gunn, bought a 15/16th heifer by Overhall Eruption for $26,000. She was sold for International Genetics. Gunn Developments, which has extensive property interest in Queensland, later paid top price of $6000 for 7/8th bulls and $2000 for another.

A 7/8th heifer by Carabinier was sold to Mr C. Mesada, Wollongong, NSW, for $10,000. Another 7/8th bull was sold for $5000 and a three-quarter heifer for $4300 went to a West Australian buyer. Carlton stud, Picton were big buyers at the sale, taking 10 head for $83,500. Talumba Cattle Co., Marlborough, Qld paid $5700 for eight head; Mr N.L. Whitehead, Oberon, NSW, bought four for $3600 and Mr Bishop, Gympie, Qld, pad $2500 for three. Warri Parri stud, Yass, NSW, bought four head for $3600. Other buyers came from throughout NSW and Queensland, Victoria, South and Western Australia. Apart from sellers of the top priced bulls and heifers, other vendors at the sale were the Red Beef Cattle Co., Glen Parc, Mittagong, and Argyle Charolais stud, Penrose, NSW. Red Beef sold Charolais infused bulls and females and three Charbray bulls. The latter fetched $850 and two made $550. Argyle sold Charolais infused females, with a top price of $2000 for a half-bred heifer, bought by Carlton stud. Agents were Animal Breeding Services, Pitt, Son and Badgery and Winchcombe, Carson Ltd.
