President’s Post
Brendan Scheiwe, CSA President
It is with great pleasure I write my first report after being newly elected this year. I would like to congratulate Chris Knox on the fantastic job he has done over the past three years as President. I believe I have large shoes to fill to follow on from Chris. We have just watched Beef 2018 come and go for another three years and I’m sure there are already plans for 2021 starting to happen. It was great to see the number of studs that had made the effort in trade displays and show cattle to display our wonderful breed to the world. I would like to congratulate Colin on a job well done with the CSA trade site as we were in a prime position to catch most visitors as they made their way past. It was also great to see the Charolais win the interbreed female and the ANZ National Carcase Competition. Congratulations to the Price and Campbell Families. This year our AGM was held at Beef 2018. I would like to report we had a very good roll up for the meeting but we would always love to see more members attend as the more input, the better it is for all. The member drinks after the meeting where a hit as always and it was great catching up with you all. It was also great to see Bruce and Maureen Fisher from New Zealand and Mel Reekie from Canada. Plans are now well underway for the 2020 world Congress. The committee are having regular phone meetings and it all seems to be coming together. I can tell you that it will be starting at Brisbane Royal and finishing in Sydney. All the parts in between are still being finalised and will be public as soon as they are organised. The National show and sale plans are well under way and I believe we have some great numbers entered for the sale. This will be an event not to be missed as it is a spectacle of our breed. This year we thank Colinta Holdings for the donation heifer being sold at the dinner with all proceeds going to our Charolais youth. This year’s heifer Colinta Minnie (P) has had a very successful show career winning Junior Champion heifer at Sydney Royal and Beef 2018 so she is definitely one to consider adding to your donor program. As I write this report large areas of the eastern states of Australia are in drought again, I have spoken to many members that are feeding all their cows, this is not a fun past time at all and I wish you all significant rain soon. The Cattle market has eased quite a bit over the last months but I think this is when our breed will shine as weight still pays and our Charolais and Charolais X calves will outweigh their competitors. With bull selling season starting to ramp up in NSW and then onto Queensland I wish all those members that have bulls to sell all the best and let’s hope for a great result for all. On closing my first report as President I would like to pass on sincere condolences to the Noller Family on their loss of Jeff in May. Jeff was a astute cattlemen that will be missed by many but never forgotten for his larrikin ways.

ALL PROCEEDS DONATED TO SUPPORT AUSTRALIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH
From the Office Colin Rex, Breed Development Manager
Its human nature to occasionally procrastinate. There is normally some task that is less enjoyable, just outright hard or mind numbing that makes delay tactics seem logical. One of my previous bosses always advised doing the worst task first on the weekly planner and the rest of the chores would then seem considerably better. As cattle breeders do we tend to put off those chores that need to be accomplished but seem more tedious? I would think many breeders would consider a day in the yards with the calves seem more enjoyable than planning the marketing program. The reality is getting stuck in can yield results far beyond expectation. Just as a wooden wheel relies on all its spokes to keep the wheels turning smoothly, a registered cattle enterprise requires attention to many aspects to keep it prospering. We know that there are more administrative duties nowadays to comply with. As a society we are committed to reducing red tape and only asking for what we require. Here in the office we prefer to keep things simple as well.

Recently the Regulations were updated with an extra requirement in DNA. Australian born sires have required a GGP-LD SNP profile for many years now. When a DNA request is made for a new sire, if his sire had a SNP profile on file we conduct sire verification at the same time. There are instances in other breeds where this has failed and extensive testing has failed to identify the correct sire. In some breeds this has lead to the deregistration of the animal. In our breed as we have an open Herdbook it would lead to the animal being regraded back to an “A Class. We strongly recommend to breeders to obtain the DNA profiles on their potential sires before joining occurs. If you buy a bull to use, take the hair sample when he arrives. This action may identify if there is a parentage issue prior to having 40 calves at weaning to be registered which could be the case. A little action early can, NO WILL SAVE a lot of heartache later down the track. If you are unsure, ring the office and we are happy to discuss a plan to have your DNA requirements up to date.
Thirty years ago I wonder if the Beef 88 organisers had a concept of the potential and longevity of the first Australian Beef Expo. The statistics of the event continue to grow with the reputation of the competitions gaining even more momentum. The importance of the Charolais breed to the Australian Beef Industry was evident through the many competitions at this event. The Society manned a well visited site in the Genetics Pavilion. We extend our appreciation to all members that exhibited cattle, had trade sites or entered the many other competitions in conjunction with the event. Canadian General Manager Mel Reekie visited for the event and had the opportunity to visit with many breeders as well as see the advancements in the Australian Beef industry. We also welcomed regular visitors Bruce and Maureen Fisher from Silverstream Charolais NZ. Congratulations to the Campbell Family, Coorara Charolais, Keysbrook WA on their success in the ANZ National Carcase Competition and the Price Family, Moongool Charolais, Yuleba Qld with the Interbreed Champion Female. Australian members will have the largest delegation at the Swedish World Congress this July. This is the last World Congress before Australia steps up and hosts the event in 2020. Planning is well underway for this event and promises to be a great celebration of the 50th anniversary of Charolais here in Australia. With a country as vast as Australia we need to focus on a snapshot of our industry for international visitors. The World Congress will commence in Brisbane with the Ekka and then proceed to Sydney for the finale. Regions are invited to host pre and post tours to enable visitors that wish to see more of the country and Charolais population, that opportunity. For many of these 50 years we had the pleasure of Jeff Noller’s company. Jeff recently passed away after a battle with illness and I would like to acknowledge his contribution to our breed’s development, particularly in Queensland. To wife Lynn, sons Brendan and Mark and families we extend our sincere condolences. Earlier this year we elected a new President with Brendan Scheiwe taking the reigns. Brendan started his Charolais herd in 1996 and has been a strong promoter of the breed ever since.

The secret of getting ahead is starting. The secret of getting started is breaking your tasks into smaller manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.
Chris Knox our previous President had served his three year term and continues to offer his vast experience as a Council member. We welcome Alan Goodland (Qld) and Robin Yost (WA) to the Council. Contact information is listed in the front of this publication and also on the website and I strongly urge members to discuss opportunities for our breed either directly or at regional meetings. With the input of many, the roles of administration become decidedly smaller. The Council is pleased to announce that an election process mandated by members in the 2017 Member Survey was recently approved at the Annual General Meeting. Our Council will be elected in a split election process each year. This offers a continuance in the management of the Society with only half the Council changing each year. I can assure members that the Council, staff and Society are always looking for the edge to progress the development of Charolais in Australia. Some of this is regional and some behind the scenes in industry meetings and therefore not always visible. We are focused on promotion in different mediums to access as many cattle breeders as possible. Our website www.charolais.com.au has been completely overhauled this year. The new site will be live in July if not before. Members will be advised when the new site is live. All websites have a shelf life and whilst our current site has served us well, it’s time for an update. This work has been undertaken by Giant Media based at Coffs Harbour. Bryn Goode and his team have been an absolute delight to work with, extremely knowledgable and if any member is looking for a new website these guys are worth a call, 02 6651 5322 or visit their site www.giantmedia.com.au As you receive this magazine in the mail the National events at Dubbo showground will be upon us. The tight format of our Nationals is unique to our breed with the National Youth Stampede, Pickles Auctions National Showcase and Allflex National Sale in just three and a half days. Add in our dinner at Macquarie Inn and the announcement of the “Charolais in Focus” photography competition and it becomes a must attend event. With the drier than usual conditions this year we have reduced the events by a day/night to assist members feeding cattle. cont page 12.... 11

We extend our appreciation to Glencore Coal through their subsidiary Colinta Holdings Pty Ltd donating Colinta Minnie (P) to raise funds to develop Australian Charolais Youth. Colinta Minnie has already been awarded Junior Champion Heifer at both Sydney Royal and Beef Australia 2018. She is also from the same dam as Allflex National Sale topper Colinta Levi (P) who sold for $20,000 last year. Thank you sincerely for this generous donation. I would ask member to consider the services of our society sponsors. At most Charolais events industry suppliers and our members stand up and support others participating and this is important in the building of the bonds of the Charolais family. As a Society let’s all work together for the cause, progressing our great breed. Charolais have had success in Carcase and feedlot trials in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales already this year. We have the attributes to be a truly national breed in the Australian beef industry. If every member entered one extra feedback trial, carcase competition, led steer or productivity trial I believe the results would be outstanding. We have a product and it’s up to every one of us to tell the world about the attributes of the Charolais breed. No one else will do it for us. I would also take the opportunity to thank Deearn, Lucy and Hayley for their efforts in providing an exceptional service to members. Coming to work is easy when you have a team like this to work with. If you have any queries on Society regulations, events or breed opportunities please do not hesitate to contact the office, we would be pleased to assist in any way we can. Hoping the clouds break open and all areas of Australia get the moisture we require.

The Next Generation
Canada Bound The inaugural winner of the Interational Youth Exchange to be conducted in Canada this year is Heidi Nicholls, Tookawhile Charolais Stud, Rukenvale NSW. Heidi has a strong affiliation with the Charolais breed being the grand daughter of Terry and Maylene Griffin, Temana Charolais. Terry and Maylene have been great supporters of the Charolais youth events providing many heifers for the use of participants that do not have their own heifer. Their daughters, Nicole and Kylie were both participants in the earlier Youth programs and now its pleasing to see the next generation coming through the ranks of the Charolais breed. Canadian Charolais, Helge and Candace By and the Canadian Youth Committee will host 15 international delegates during their annual Youth event in Brandon this July. This program will enable delegates from International Charolais organisations to network together with the long term benefit increasing global interaction in the future. Heidi is in her second year of a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of New England. She spent her summer break working at the Sandlewood Feedlot near Dalby Qld gaining further experience in the beef industry. Heidi said “I know that my future lies in the livestock sector, it’s something I’m passionate about. One of my first part time jobs was at a butcher shop, that, combined with my experience at the feedlot and within the stud stock industry has given me a broad overview of the realities and practicalities of beef production. My aim is to be a food producer or take on a role that directly supports our food producers to deliver a benefit that is important to our entire society”. 14

The Charolais Australia 2018 International Youth Exchange Recipient Heidi Nicholls seen with former President Chris Knox. Heidi was also the Champion Herdsperson at the 2017 National Youth Stampede.
Apart from competing in the Canadian Youth events, the delegates will be toured by Helge and Candace By (Charolais Banner owners) around several herds and also include some sightseeing along the way. We look forward to Heidi returning and contributing to the development of our Youth programs after this experience.
Colinta Minnie (P) Supporting Youth In recent years Charolais studs have generously donated a heifer to raise funds to develop our Youth Programs. This year Glencore Coal subsidiary, Colinta Holdings are pleased to support our youth programs. The 2018 Youth Heifer will be Colinta Minnie (P). Minnie was the Junior champion Heifer at this year’s Royal Sydney Show and also Beef Australia 2018. Colinta Minnie who was bred at Glencore’s Singleton coal field operation will sell at the Nationals on Friday 13th July 2018. In the past two years heifers from Airlie and Minnie Vale have raised in excess of $11,000 which has been 100% invested into our Youth programs. This heifer was selected from the Colinta herd when only a calf on her dam to support this program. Part of the selection process was the success of half brother Colinta Levi who topped the Allflex National Sale at $20,000 in 2017. Colinta Levi then went on to be Brisbane Grand Champion Male and was a member of the winning Interbreed Pair.
Colinta Minnie is polled and sired by Canadian Trait Leader Merit Roundup 9508W (P). In the March 2018 BREEDPLAN analysis Roundup was a trait leader for Birthweight, 200 and 400 day growth and Scrotal size. In addition he also ranks in the top 1% for shorter gestation length and ranks highly on the three Charolais Selection Indices. Minnie herself ranks in the top 5% for 200 day weight and top 20% for 400 and 600 day weight. On her dam’s side she has trait leader LHD Mr Perfect and the female strength from the well known Golmandyke Park Ruby family. There is also a strong full french influence with Minnie’s granddam Colinta Y1540F a Full French daughter of Colinta VIP. Add to this her balance and tremendous length and this heifer has extraordinary potential. Colinta Holdings Manager Gary Johncock said “to have made this early selection and then see Minnie progress to Junior champion at Sydney Royal is extremely pleasing to Colinta Holdings”. We strongly encourage all breeders to inspect Colinta Minnie at the National Events in Dubbo. She will stand your inspection and remember that all funds support the development of our Youth Programs in Charolais.
Thank you Colinta Holdings Pty Ltd /Glencore Coal for your amazing support.

PURE INTENTIONS Travis King, Farm Weekly
With a beef-producing history that includes breeding and feeding, Phil Tomlinson is pretty well placed to assess cattle breeds and performance. From the family farm at Balingup, Phil moved to Bremer Bay to farm in 1976 and took a herd of dairy cows and first-cross cows with him, as well as a stud herd of Herefords from the family’s Balingdale Poll Hereford stud, which was established by Phil’s father in the 1960s. The stud was one of WA’s leading producers of Poll Hereford bulls and during its time was awarded many ribbons at shows throughout the State including Beef Week and the West Coast Classic. After arriving in Bremer, Phil found the country there was too hard for the dairytype cattle, so he made the move to running Herefords and Angus. The Bremer property is also where the family made its first foray into lotfeeding, when in 1981 a few factors combined to prompt Phil to start grain feeding cattle. “It wasn’t a great season and the calves were quite storey,” Phil said. At the same time the cattle market wasn’t that strong and we had a wet harvest and so considering all those factors, we decided to start feedlotting. There weren’t many feedlots in WA at that time so it was a bit of a learning curve. I fed our own calves to start with and then started to buy a few in and it grew and grew from there.” 16
July 2018 Charolais Magazine
The Tomlinsons farmed for many years at Bremer Bay, but in the early 2000s life took another turn when they purchased a property at Munglingup that was at one stage, part of Bedford Harbour station. The property, known as Lake Shaster, comprised of more than 9000 hectares and this land area meant the Tomlisons were able to expand their cattle herd and the lotfeeding operation. “We started with 1800 cattle there, we took the 500 head Hereford and Angus herd we were running at Bremer with us and also bought some cattle in to get numbers up,” Phil said. “We eventually got to 2000 breeders and constructed a feedlot that had a 1500-head capacity and ran 11.5 months of the year.” It was feeding cattle at Lake Shaster that Phil first saw the potential of the Charolais breed. “I used to like feeding Charolais cattle,” he said. “There was a company in Esperance that used to breed them and I always tried to buy their calves as they performed well in the feedlot.” While impressed by the performance of the Charolais calves on feed, it would be a while before Phil would start running a purebred Charolais herd. That move came after the family sold Lake Shaster and decided to move again, with Phil and Shirley settling on a smaller block at Napier.
“I brought the Angus herd with me when we moved to Napier,” Phil said. “I also bought some firstcross cows to run on the place and trialled a few European breeds over the first-cross and the Angus.” It was in 2013 when Phil decided to give the Charolais breed a go, initially to mate Charolais bulls to the first-cross cows. One bull in particular took his eye when he inspected the Token Charolais stud herd in 2013 and he went on and purchased that bull at the Landmark Great Southern Blue Ribbon bull sale. “I started out mating him to first-cross cows,” Phil said. “I then bought 10 pure Charolais cows from the Denmoore Charolais stud dispersal and the performance of the calves made me decide to go pure Charolais. Their calves were equal weight to what the first-cross cows were producing and they were lower maintenance, so I decided to go all Charolais.” As a way of increasing the quality of the herd quickly Phil, with the help of Landmark southern livestock manager Bob Pumphrey, scoured the State for quality Charolais cows. “We had the pick of the Milton’s herd at Dardanup and bought some from Dr John Rosenthal’s herd at Bridgetown,” he said. “We also had the opportunity to buy some stud cows from the Lawson family’s Charolais herd and together these purchases have enabled us to get a quality line of cows together quickly.” This year Phil will calve down 120 Charolais breeders and while this will only be his third year running a pure herd, he is impressed with what has been produced.
“We sold some calves at a recent trade sale in Mt Barker and they averaged 419 kilograms straight off their mothers,” Phil said. “At 290c/kg they made pretty good money.” This was the tops of the calves and Phil said he would probably hold onto the rest of the draft a little longer because there was good potential in exporting them to Russia. “They are looking for 500-550kg calves and it seems like a good opportunity so that is where I will probably send them,” he said. The calves will be fed a combination of Kojonup Feeds pellets and silage to get them to weights, with Phil admitting that it is hard to let go of feeding cattle to add value to them. Even though he hasn’t been running pure Charolais cows for long, Phil has already made an impact in the breed buying the top price bull for the past two years at the WA Charolais Bull Sale in Brunswick. When buying bulls, Phil said he looked for even muscle cover and a good muscle pattern. He also takes into account their milk figures, with the reasoning that if a bull has good milk figures that should be passed onto the females it breeds. When asked what he likes about running Charolais cattle, Phil simply said they were doing the job. “You don’t have to over feed them and they are very hardy,” he said. “They produce a good calf, have good carcases and they yield well – they are not wasteful. “They also seem to convert feed well and are good for crossbreeding. You can put a Charolais bull over a lot of breeds and if I was farming in Esperance now I would put Charolais bulls over Angus females.
Right: Phil Tomlinson says the performance of this Token stud Charolais bull is one of the reasons he went into Charolais. He initially used the now five-year-old bull over first-cross cows but then decided to run an all-Charolais herd.
Below: A mix of weaner steers and heifers on the Tomlinson’s Napier property. A draft of calves were recently sold at a Mt Barker trade sale and averaged 419kg and made 290c/kg.

Tumut High RYCE Sets The Bar High The Tumut High School RYCE (Rural Youth Cattle Enrichment) Charolais stud achieved outstanding results at the Canberra Royal Show in February. The path for extraordinary success commenced when the RYCE Charolais stud entered a fifteen month old Charolais heifer in the inaugural interbreed junior heifer jackpot competition. Within a very short time RYCE Coralie 16 was awarded the heifer champion from a class of 35 heifers. The competition was open to heifers from all breeds and under 24 months of age. This result set the platform for RYCE Coralie 16’s success to follow. The first section of the Charolais beef cattle stud competition resulted in Coralie 16 being awarded Junior Champion Charolais Female. She then went on to win the Grand Champion Charolais Female. But Coralie 16 had more surprises for her owners when she was awarded Supreme Charolais exhibit for the show. The Interbreed Judging was next in line and to the astonishment of the students, parents and staff members, Coralie 16 was announced the Supreme Champion Beef Breed Female of the Show. An amazing result for the RYCE Charolais stud which has been operating for five years.
Beef cattle judges were Dr Thomas Grupp, Bayern Genetik, Germany, Donna Robson, Flemington Limousin stud, Adelong, and Scott Myers, Myers Limousin stud, Moss Vale. The RYCE Charolais stud also was successful with a thirty four month old Charolais heifer, RYCE Estella with her five week old calf RYCE Pretzel. RYCE Estella was awarded the Reserve Senior Champion Charolais Female.
A seventeen month old heifer, RYCE Estella 16 was awarded a third in her heat. RYCE Refine 15, a 26 month old heifer was first in her heat and RYCE Cutie Pie, a 26 month old heifer received a third in her heat. These results in the beef cattle stud section of Royal Canberra were amazing and a credit to the students who used their cattle skills in the preparation of the animals for the show circuit.
These results are very special to Tumut High School as the RYCE Charolais stud bred both the sire: RYCE Jupiter and dam: RYCE Croalie of RYCE Coralie 16. Special mention to RYCE Coralie 16’s handler, a year 11 student Breanna Holmes for her consistent work in preparing her for the event. An announcement was made at the stud beef cattle presentations, that Tumut High School is the first school to have been awarded the Supreme Champion Beef Breed Female of the Show having bred their own stud stock. The RYCE cattle program thank and acknowledge the fourteen parents who supported the students and program while at the Canberra Royal last week. The school appreciates the ongoing support to the cattle program from the many community individuals and businesses throughout the area. The herd at RYCE was established with a $200,000 financial assistance grant in the NAB School First Program in 2012. Visy Industries has provided the school with 36 hectares to run the Charolais herd on.

Breeders from four states presented a quality line of Charolais to judge Mr Tom Baker, Woonallee Simmentals at the 2018 Royal Easter show. Throughout the classes the quality was exceptionally strong and highlighted the selection pressure Charolais breeders have placed on structure. After judging Mr Baker commented “I was extremely impressed with the Charolais cattle today, they were very well made cattle that had mobility style, softness and carcase traits. The Charolais breed has changed as all Euro breeds have. We are starting to see a little more moderation, a little bit more softness whilst still maintaining the performance and carcase quality the breed is are known for”. The Junior champion heifer went to Colinta Holdings Pty Ltd exhibit Colinta Minnie (P). This well developed poll heifer was sired by Merit Roundup and contested the 19 to 20 months class. Mr Baker referenced the scale and depth of this heifer. Minnie is a half sister maternally to Colinta Levi (P) the top price sire at the 2017 Allflex National Sale. Colinta also took a second placing in the junior heifer classes with a Full French heifer sired by Nevers RJ. Second in class was Youth Members, the Fogden Family at their first Sydney Royal with Boulview McKenzie, a daughter of DSK AC F33E. Reserve junior champion heifer was Moongool Oregon 6 sired by Silverstream Evolution E168E. This heifer exhibited tremendous depth of body and capacity. Myona Charolais placed first and second in the 9 to 12 months class and third in 12 to 14 months class. Their baby heifers were both sired by Myona Kracka Jack and their third place heifer was by AI sire MVY Xplorer 21X. Later in judging Myona Lukas L25E was awarded the Reserve Senior Champion bull capping off a successful show for their team. Gavin and Kristie O”Brien won the 16 to 18 months class with Winchester Honor M11E. The Honor family has bred exceptionally well for Winchester. This entry was sired by LT Easy Blend 5125 and has very positive EBVs for Rib and Rump fat, highlighting her easy doing ability. Regular exhibitors in Sydney, the Thompson Family made the trek across the Nullabor and were rewarded with their best results to date including several class wins. Their heifer Venturon Mariah sired by Venturon Keystone won the Heifer 18 to 19 months class. Mariah was also the Reserve junior Champion Heifer at Perth Royal in 2017. Venturon Keystone was also the sire of their other class winner Venturon Maximum Impact. Maximum Impact was also a reserve junior champion at Perth in 2017. This bull weighing 700kg won the 14 to 16 months class and will now reside in New South Wales having been purchased for stud duties at Winchester Charolais stud.

Senior & Grand Champion Female, Moongool Fanmail 8 exhibited by Keddstock Pty Ltd, Yuleba Qld.
Moongool had a great run in the senior female section winning both championships on offer. Moongool Fanmail 8 sired by Advance Dozer won the 30 to 36 months class before taking Senior and Grand champion. Mr Baker commented “outstanding cow with great maternal attributes, a cow that really offers femininity, style, with a great udder under her. She has a tremendous calf which really tops off the package, she is a complete individual that moves really well and as a pair this unit is outstanding”. Fanmail’s heifer calf was sired by Temana Golden Logie G66E. Moongool Typhena 9 won the reserve senior champion female adding to her reserve junior championship in Brisbane in 2016. The Reserve Junior Champion from Brisbane in 2015 (also judged by Mr Baker) won the senior female class when Alison McCabe’s Sapphire Kool Fantasy sired by TR Red Smoke took class honours. Kel and Lesley Bridges won the other senior female class with their Little Valley My Angelique sired by EC No Doubt. In the bull section the progeny of Temana Golden Logie G66 really shone. This sire accounted for junior and grand, reserve junior and senior champion awards with the three sons on show. Top gong went to Chris Knox and Helen Alexander with Junior and Grand Champion bull with DSK TGL Max M69. Max weighed in at 892kg at 19 months with a 129cm2 EMA. This bull was the Junior champion bull at the Pickles Auctions National Showcase 2017. Mr Baker commented “Outstanding individual with an immense amount of power, he has the carcase traits we need, he has softness mobility and style. The champion has a tremendous skin and hair type making him suitable for both southern and northern markets. A really complete bull”. DSK also won Senior champion bull with half brother DSK TGL Metric M59E. This bull is a full brother to DSK TGL Legacy L34 who won Sydney, Brisbane and National Showcase in 2016. Moongool and Elite purchased the dam of this bull for $10,000 at the 2015 National Sale. Reserve Junior champion bull came from the Moongool string with their Moongool Monopoly. Aged 16 months this calf weighed in at 786kgs and scanned 122cm2 EMA.
Caloona Park Manaro won the 18 to 19 months class for Steve and Louie Franco. This deep bodied red factor son of Caloona Park Hero had an average daily weight gain of 1.67kg/day to tip the scales at 930kgs at 18 months. The strength of the female families at Winchester again rose to the top when Winchester Powerstroke from their “Quist family” won the 12 to 14 months class. This calf posted an average daily weight gain of 1.81kg/day to top the daily weight gain of any Charolais bull on the grounds. This bull was sired by TR Fire Water 5792R. Daniel Croker won the 9 to 12 months class with his Palgrove Formula son Bolong Noosa. Noosa weighed in at 626kg at 11 months. Moongool won the Breeder’s Group for the Charolais breed and then won the Interbreed Breeder’s Group. Venturon won the Sires Progeny class with progeny of Venturon Keystone (P) and Colinta won Dams Progeny with Colinta Viola progeny. DSK took the Two Bulls class. To cap off a very successful show Moongool were awarded the Most Successful Exhibitor Award. The New South Region extend their appreciation to champion sponsors Rational Nutrition, Kenmere, Minnie Vale, Winchester, Rosedale, Elstow and Canoblas Charolais Studs, Warren Miller and Australian Premier Genetics.

Sydney Royal Carcase 2018 Gold Medal Success
Judge Jeff House presenting Leanne & Ben Toll the champion Lightweight Ribbon award with RAS Council Member Michael MacCue
The Charolais influence on the Gold Medals at the Sydney Royal Carcase competition continued the success acheived in past years. This year 15 Gold medals were awarded across all breeds with Charolais taking three. Interestingly the Gold medal results did not support some industry theories on carcase quality. Full results are available to download on the Sydney Royal Cattle website. The best performing Charolais carcase was entered by Kempsey High School and sired by Sowintoo Heehaw. This sire has Full French breeding with ANC and AYR genetics. This carcase scored 92 points and won the School Heavyweight Champion Carcase as well as Reserve Champion School Carcase. He dressed out at 56.7% with a carcase weight of 305kg. He was assessed at B- muscle score with a 102cm2 EMA. He measured 15/8mm of fat at Rump and Rib respectively. The other Charolais champion Carcase came from Toll Cattle with a Calf sired by Polldale Jock, himself a son of LT Ledger. This carcase was awarded the Champion Lightweight Carcase in the Open section. This win further highlights the flexibility of the Charolais breed with championships in the Liveweight and Heavyweight section with PURE CHAROLAIS steers over the years. Scoring 90 points this carcase dressed at 57.4% and weighed 229.5kg. Myona Charolais also won a Gold medal with their Heavyweight Carcase sired by Myona Kracka Jack. This carcase had a muscle score of A- and scored by 92 points in the highly competitive Open Heavyweight Section. St Johns College and Rosedale partnered to exhibit a Silver Medal Carcase sired by Raile Sovereign J827 Y064. This carcase scored 90 points.

Producing Heavy Vealers at Kangaroo Creek Ruth Schwager, The Land. USING Charolais genetics over first-cross cows is resulting in good quality, heavy vealers at Booroo, Kangaroo Creek. Ken and Nerida Ellem have been buying bulls from Wakefield Charolais, Armidale, owned by Greg and Jenny Frizell, for the past three years, focusing on structure and muscle. Using the Wakefield bulls has helped increase weaner weights, and limit calving problems. The Ellems, who had a Hereford stud, started with a pure Hereford commercial herd, and had their first foray into crossbreeding with two red Brahman bulls – purchased from Mogul and Bizzy Brahman studs – used over the whiteface cows. Eighty of the heifers from that cross were kept, forming the base herd for the current crossbreeding operation. The first-cross breeders are joined to Charolais bulls to produce heavy vealers sold through the prime sales at Grafton. ”I tried using a Simmental bull over the cross, but I think the Charolais bulls are better,” Mr Ellem said. “There’s more weight in the calves and they produce a more consistent line of cattle.” Mr Ellem keeps his top heifers, with the remaining heifers sold alongside the steers. His aim is to sell at nine to 10 months of age, weighing about 300 kilograms. It’s usually an achievable goal considering the weight gain possible through the good maternal characteristics of the F1 breeders and the carcase attributes of the Charolais genetics.
“The first-cross cow is a good milker and the Charolais genetics give the calves thickness and weight,” Mr Ellam said. ”I sold some last week that weighed 366kg and they were only 10 months of age. They averaged $1045 a head.” The 150 breeders are run on about 400 hectares of pasture which includes paspalum, kikuyu and bahia grass which was first established to control Parramatta grass. Last year’s record cattle market allowed the Ellems to fertilise their country for the first time. “It was the first time it’s been economical for me to super the place, thanks to the strong cattle prices,” Mr Ellem said. “The market isn’t as strong this year but the return was similar. The prices were higher last year but the cattle were heavier – they did better because of the fertiliser.” Mr Ellem still keeps a pure Hereford to breed the firstcross cows, but it’s also a safety net if demand for crossbred calves decreases. “If something doesn’t go right with the crossbreeding, I can fall back on them,” he said. “I don’t believe crossbreeding is really successful unless you’ve got a straight herd to start with.” First published on The Land website on March 24, 2018

Adam Chapman seen with his first cross breeders which are joined to Charolais.
HYBRID VIGOUR ON THE UPPER CLARENCE Jamie Brown, The Land.
FIRST-cross females and terminal sires produce weaners that attract a number of markets for Adam and Belinda Chapman, Fineflower, on the Upper Clarence. With minimal input to pasture, their Bos Indicus component delivers growth and do-ability while the British influence brings fertility and finishing ability. The family property, once an agricultural research station specialising in pasture trials, was purchased by Adam’s parents Glen and Gwen along with Gwen’s father Charles in 1982. Pasture improvements followed to help feed the Hereford and Angus-cross cattle that populated the place at that time. In the early years of owning the property pastures were traditionally fertilised with super and lime and cattle supplemented with a phosphorus and calcium lick and cotton seed meal when paddock feed fell dormant. Original pastures planted by the research station were varieties of bahia, Argentine and Competitor, which grow prolifically on the sandy loam country in a good summer and autumn, then slashed and mulched. When winter arrives the subtropical pastures are impacted by frost. “The country is what it is,” Mr Chapman said, noting that expensive fertiliser inputs are no longer used. “It is great breeding country. There’s no point in making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. I’ve chosen to get weight in my cattle through genetics.” The key to this system, which has evolved since 1999 when Mr Chapman started managing the family enterprise, is the first-cross British/Brahman female, which can handle the country and deliver in a tough season while meeting market demands. The crossbreeding is increasing weight in their cattle, with an 80 to 100kg average gain in weaners. In past few years they have sourced their bulls from Mogul at Yorklea via Casino. “The Mogul stud provides consistent lines of bulls with good muscle and confirmation and have accurate estimated breeding values which are a valuable tool in bull selection,” Mr Chapman said. Brahman bulls are joined to the Hereford and Angus cows on their second calf, producing a first-cross hybrid vigour between Bos Indicus and Bos Taurus breeds. Over the years British sires in their crossbreeding program have been sourced from Stannum, Glenwarrah, Amos Vale, Eastern Plains, Bald Blair and Eaglehawke studs. These days Mr Chapman joins Charolais bulls to his first-cross Brahman/Hereford cows delivering calves which he says “deliver a super vigour which shows in their muscle and volume along with their weight for age and saleability”. 28
July 2018 Charolais Magazine
For the past seven years Mr Chapman has used Wakefield due to their large and consistent selection of moderately framed, well-muscled bulls each year. “Now we join our first calf first-cross heifers to low birthweight Wakefield Charolais sires, we look for calving ease, along with good shoulder structure,” Mr Chapman said. In last year’s Northern Co-operative Meat Company vealer carcase competition – a trial designed to produce Meat Standard Australia figures for steers under 150kg liveweight, the Chapman’s calves received first prize for highest yield. “There were many local producers who entered the competition and it provided a comprehensive report which gave great feedback to producers,” Mr Chapman said. “During last year’s store sales at Grafton our Charolaiscross calves averaged 290kg at eight to 10 months of age. We had to buy a new Morrissey calf cradle to handle the extra width of the calves.” At the start of their breeding program the Chapman family found a ready market selling first-cross females and during that time experimented with Brangus and Braford bulls over their Brahman/Hereford cows to no real gain. “The first-cross versus the second-cross imitation look very similar but don’t produce the consistent growth and weight of a genuine first-cross,” Mr Chapman said. “But you soon find out once you put them on feed. The genuine first-cross calf will consistently put more weight on than the secondcross – their finishing ability is the difference. The first-cross heifers also mature earlier. “When we joined our straight British and Brahman heifers they are generally rising three years old whereas with the first-cross we are joining them at two years of age. They matured earlier and put more weight on so were able to cycle earlier.” To find the ultimate terminal sire that suited their environment and available markets the Chapmans continued their experimentation. Perhaps it had something to do with Mr Chapman’s scientific and inquiring mind, having left a Sydney career in pathology to chase cattle back home. “In the beginning my father and grandfather were chasing the vealer market and they were looking for early maturing calves, but now we go for a moderate-framed bull with a high muscle score that produces calves which can suit so many markets, from vealers to bullocks,” he said. “Diversity is important. You need to hit as many markets as you can.” First published on The Land website on March 24, 2018

July 2018 Charolais Magazine
The Milk EBV is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. BREEDPLAN does not estimate how much milk a cow gives, rather it estimates how much of her calf’s weaning weight can be attributed to the difference between her inherited milk potential and the breed benchmark. The Milk EBV is expressed as kg of calf live-weight at 200 days ie the expected difference in this weight due to the maternal effect (milk) of the cow. Because we do not milk beef cows we can’t get direct measure of milk production, so we have to look at using an indirect measurement such as weaning weight, however there are two genetic factors that influence the weight of a calf at weaning – the amount of milk it gets from its dam, and the inherent growth potential of the calf. BREEDPLAN uses the calves’ 200 and 400 day weights, and some complex mathematics derived from research results, to estimate how much of the 200 day weight is due to milk. This amount is then multiplied by the known heritability of the trait to arrive at the EBV. Whilst the actual calculations are mathematically complex, field observations indicate that BREEDPLAN ranking for milk accurately reflect the genetic component of milking ability. In the case of a sire, BREEDPLAN estimates how much of the 200 day weight of his daughters’ calves result from the genetic component of her milking ability that she inherited from the sire. Therefore it may take some time before a sire actually has daughters with calves that are performance recorded at weaning. Until a sire has daughters in production, his EBV for 200-Day milk is determined from his relatives’ EBVs. The accuracy of a milk EBV that is based strictly upon pedigree information is relatively low and the possible change in EBV from one evaluation to the next, as daughters are brought into production, could be quite large. The Milk EBV is the EBV which is most influenced by poor recording of performance data by breeders eg neglecting management groups, selective recording.
A Simple Example of Separating the Milk & Growth Components of a 200-Day Weight In simple terms, the 200-Day weight of a calf is mainly determined by the calf’s growth potential and its mother’s milk. Differences from the average 200-day weights in a group of calves are partitioned into; growth and milk components. These are refined as further weights enhance the growth estimates. Research at AGBU on Australian cattle data has shown that there is virtually no genetic correlation between milk and growth at 200 days. This means that these traits operate independently of each other in the analysis and both traits explain some of the genetic variation at weaning. As an example, in which there is no performance information available on the parents, two calves, A and B, have the same adjusted 200-Day weight of 300 kg compared to the group average of 260 kg. This 40 kg superiority is initially independently apportioned according to the heritabilities of 200-day growth and 200-day milk (20% and 10% respectively in this example).
EBV Milk
EBV Growth
EBV = 40 x heritability of 200-day milk
EBV = 40 x heritability of 200-day growth
(Milk) = 40 x .1
(Growth) = 40 x .2
= +4kg
= +8kg
The extra growth due to milk reflects the cow’s genetic potential for milk, so only half of the EBV is inherited by the calf. The cow’s EBV for Milk is +4kg and the calf’s EBV for Milk is +2kg.The extra growth due to milk reflects the cow’s genetic potential for milk, so only half of the EBV is inherited by the calf. The cow’s EBV for Milk is +4kg and the calf’s EBV for Milk is +2kg. 200 Day Milk EBV
200 Day Growth EBV
+2 +2
CALF A CALF B
+8 +8
At 400 days Calf A weighs 400 kg and Calf B weighs 380 kg compared to an average of 360 kg. This indicates that Calf A has higher inherent growth potential than Calf B because it has grown better than calf B after weaning. With this extra information BREEDPLAN reassess the amount of extra weight at weaning allocated to growth and milk production of the dam. A reassessment of the EBVs is:
CALF A CALF B
200 Day Milk EBV
200 Day Growth EBV
400 Day Growth EBV
+2.22 +2.19
+8.9 +7.3
+12.2 +6.9
Note: 400-Day weight is also used in BREEDPLAN to predict Milk EBV although with a lower heritability (5%). While both bulls have above average performance at 400 days, bull A will be superior to bull B. Without 200-Day weight the 400-Day EBV would have been +12 and +6 kg. The 200-Day weights however modify the 400-Day EBV and vice-versa. Milk EBVs are only slightly affected but both go up as we now have two positive deviations for each bull (+40 & +40 for bull A; and +40 & +20 for bull B for 200 and 400 day weights respectively). If Milk EBVs were available for the dams from previous progeny this would also be used to assess the proportion of 200-Day weight due to growth and milk. The sire’s EBV for Milk would not influence the 200-Day weight of the calf, but would contribute to the calf’s Milk EBV.

Autumn Weaner Sales Around the Yards: Casino and Gunnedah
Day Two at the Annual George and Fuhrmann 3 day weaner sales at Casino is traditionally Euro cross. Calves at this sale are exceptionally well developed and find strong buyer support. Row after row feature Charolais cross calves and they stand out for their muscle development, growth and consistency. The pen uniformity is a strong marketing aspect when the wide variety of dams these calves are raised on is taken into account. The Charolais influence was outstanding with the sale topper a Charolais cross weighing 470kg and selling for 327c/ kg. This calf offered by Nathan and Kim Charters, Coraki made $1536. Max McCabe sold Charolais cross steers from Brahman x Hereford cross dams at $1,335. Weighing in at an average 392kg, these calves sold for 341c/kg. Purchaser was Noel and Liz Cook, Kindon Station, Goondiwindi who also purchased a pen from the Fuhrmann Family. This pen sold for 359c/kg or $1275 for Charolais from Santa Hereford dams. Paul and Jenny Furhmann exhibited the champion Charolais pen of steer weaners and Rodney and Jenny Botfield offered the champion pen of Charolais cross heifers. At the first of the weaner sales featuring Angus and Hereford cross calves, steers averaged $948 for 298kg and 318c/kg. Heifers averaged $708 for 236kg and 300c/kg. At the Euro sale 2248 steers averaged 334c/kg at 301kg and overall $1005. The third sale featured Santa cross calves and steers in this sale averaged $960 giving the Euro cross cattle a clear advantage in profit. On the same day at Gunnedah, Charolais cross steers topped the Powerhouse Weaner sale with Hamblin Pastoral selling 11 steers at 373c/kg or $1,267 head. They also sold a pen of heifers with the 16 head selling for $1,104 or 320c/kg. The Moody Family, Coonabarabran sold 250 Charolais Red Angus steers and heifers. Their top was 15 steers at $1,005 or 329c/kg.

Colour in Charolais Surprisingly, it has been written that there are only two basic coat colours for cattle; red and black. What this means is that the gene at the ‘coat colour locus’ (not its real name) has two possible alleles - red and black. Black is ‘completely dominant’ over red. This would result in either homozygous black (BB); heterozygous black (Br) or homozygous recessive red (rr). (This situation has been documented with Angus cattle and in particular the fact that some Angus carry the red gene yet appear black). The only commercially available test for determining coat colour is the test that identifies base coat colour. As not all cattle are black or red, (and the fact that so far this does nothing to explain white) the variety in colours is a result of the interaction of alleles at other loci. The Externtion (E) locus is responsible for most of the variation in cattle coat colour. (Olson 1999) There are three alleles present at this alleles present at this locus, and in order of dominance are: E(d) (dominant black) > E(+) (wild type allele responsible for combinations of red/reddishbrown/black) > e (recessive red). This takes the base coat colour one step further by suggesting that the shades of brown (between black and red) are explained by the wild type allele. Based on the fact that genetically there are only two basic colours, and combining this with the effects of the extention locus, the genetic background for Charolais is e/e (homozygous recessive red). However, there are numerous more loci with other impacts to determine the outcome of coat colour especially considering we have not mentioned white yet. This is by far the most difficult piece of information to digest - the fact that the base coat colour of Charolais is actually red. The most influential locus for Charolais is that of the Dilution locus. The two alleles are D, which is responsible for the white coat colour for Charolais and completely dominates over its wild type (non-diluting) allele d. “Most Charolais are homozygous for both e and D, with the red coat that would have been produced by the e/e genotype being modified to an essentially white one by D/D” (Olsen 1999) To reiterate, the genetics that influence the white coat colour of Charolais is known as the “diluter gene” which effectively masks the red base colour and allows Charolais the distinctive colour of White. Alleles can interact in two ways: ‘dominance’ describes how alleles interact with each other at a particular locus; ‘epistasis’ describes how genes interact with genes at other loci (Bullock 2006). 36
July 2018 Charolais Magazine
Two Charolais (red factor and white) flanked by a Red Angus and a Black Angus, the colour spectrum.
An example of ‘dominance’ is the fact that the diluter gene D completely overrides the not diluting d such that Dd would result in the same dilution effect as DD. An example of ‘epistasis’ is the interaction of the diluter D masking the background colour e/e. In fact it does such a good job of masking the background colour that it is very nearly completely dominant. The result of this fact - that it is ‘nearly’ dominant, goes some way to explain the effects when the diluter gene is not there and is represented by the wild type homozygous d/d. The presence of the non=diluter gened/d means that the background colour (or otherwise) of the allele, a degree of red colouring may show through. The coat may show anything from a light straw colour to apricot. Actually, the French describe ‘not white’ Charolais as “Blonde” and most choose to cull these. (Therefore the French may in fact be selecting against the recessive wild type - non diluting gene d/d). Rather than thinking of Charolais having the diluter genes making the cattle either white or not, we need to recognize that the diluter gene, just as its name suggests, dilutes the red base colour rather than rids it. There are other alleles which influence the coat colour. With Charolais, a spotting allele is also present. This allele highlights the skin pigment which is otherwise hidden by the dilution gene so that when the animal has the non-dilution gene, broken colour will show up if the spotting allele is switched on. It has often been said that the broken colour that is visible in the coat of red factor animals has more to do with the pigmentation of the white Charolais. Effectively, the spotter gene (which causes broken colour) can be present in Charolais that are white and go unnoticed due to the effect of the diluter gene masking any difference in colouring. It is only when the diluter gene is less prevalent that such a spotter gene becomes visible. The point is that animals with broken colour are not necessarily crossbred animals, even if they do appear so. Having said that, there are regulations in place to ensure that the image of Charolais is not compromised from misconceptions that broken colouring can cause. It is not the red factor (or lack of diluter gene) that is totally responsible for broken colour, but more likely that the broken colour (spotter gene) will be more visible when the diluter gene is less prevalent. As mentioned, the colour of Charolais is determined by its genes. Management and selection pressure can influence the outcomes. This is true for any genetic selection.

The Charolais Australia 2018 International Youth Exchange Recipient Heidi Nicholls at UNE, Armidale where she is studying a Bachelor of Agribusiness.
Garrett Youth Scholarship 2017 The generosity of the Garrett Family from the USA in donating the seed capital to commence a scholarship program here in Australia is still paying dividends nearly 20 years later. Over the years Australian members have contributed to the invested amount and this has enabled this great concept to continue. The Garrett Youth Scholarships have seen many Charolais youth benefit from a cash award to assist in funding their education pursuits. In 2017 the winner of the scholarship was Heidi Nicholls from Took-a-while Charolais stud on the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Heidi is enrolled at the University of New England (UNE) based at Armidale. In acknowledging her support from the scholarship Heidi commented “I am honoured to be the 2017 recipient of the Garrett Youth Scholarship. I would like to acknowledge the Garrett Family and other donors for their generous support for myself and Charolais youth. The Garrett Youth Scholarship has given me the opportunity to improve my knowledge of the agricultural industry whilst studying at University”. Heidi is currently in her second year at UNE, studying a Bachelor of Agriculture. Heidi said “by receiving the Garrett Youth Scholarship, it has lightened my financial burden. This has allowed me to focus more on the most important aspect of university, study and learning”. Heidi values her education opportunities adding “I would like to encourage as many youth members as possible to apply for this specific scholarship as it has had a great impact on the financial burden of attending University. I have used this scholarship to help with the payments of my university fees, but also have put the rest aside to help with my overseas travel later this year”.

July 2018 Charolais Magazine
Heidi was recently awarded a bursary to attend the International Charolais Youth Exchange. This scholarship enables Heidi to travel to Canada in July 2018 and compete at the Canadian Junior Charolais National, along with 15 other International Exchangees from all parts of the world. Heidi said “this is an amazing opportunity that I will be forever grateful for. It will give me the opportunity to network with like-minded Charolais youth members from around the world, compete in the Charolais junior show and tour several Charolais herds. After the conference, I have decided to stay in Canada for an extra few weeks. During the extra time that I am in Canada I hope to visit as many Breeders, Genetic Centres and universities that I can fit in. I will also spend a couple of weeks at Soderglen Ranches. Soderglen Ranches is one of the largest Seedstock cattle operations in Canada, and the company’s land base has grown to include ranches northwest of Airdrie, southwest of Fort Macleod and southeast of Cardston. Soderglen raises grain and a variety of beef breeds – including two they have developed themselves and Charolais”. Previous recipients of these scholarships have gone on to contribute back into Australian Agriculture successfully. The Charolais Society is pleased to see recipients that have received scholarships continuing their career in agriculture and this year will be conducting a capital raising auction to add to the investment amount that generates the annual scholarships. Breed Manager Colin Rex commented “the need for educational opportunities for our youth is evident, we have the opportunity to increase the value of scholarships awarded annually and leave a legacy for our future youth to access”.

Charolais judging was live streamed through Livestock Connect further increasing the breeds’exposure. The Charolais Society had a double site at Beef Australia in the Genetics Pavilion. The site was well attended by visitors and members alike and offered a comfortable spot to rest and network with fellow breeders. Huge vote of appreciation to commercial Charolais breeders, Ian and Georgie Maher, Mount Morgan who built and delivered a bespoke timber cabinet that was the centre piece of our display. Built from timber milled on their property it provided storage and shelf space and attracted a lot of interest from visitors. Pull up banners were printed by our magazine printers Litho Art and these will be reused at future events proving to be very cost effective.
The Society took the opportunity to conduct the Annual General Meeting during the week and a good attendance was achieved for this important meeting. We welcomed international guests Mel Reekie, Manager Canadian Charolais Association and Bruce and Maureen Fisher, Silverstream Charolais, New Zealand to our meeting and function afterwards. Walking through the commercial pens at Gracemere the Charolais influence was very evident. One of the features of our breed is the ability to stamp the Charolais characteristics on their progeny both visually and economically with muscle and growth clearly impressive in the Charolais pens. To every member and commercial Charolais breeder that contributed to Beef Australia in anyway shape or form please accept the Societies appreciation, it’s an important event in our industry and presenting our breed’s attributes positively is extremely important.

...the crossing of Charolais cattle into our northern cattle herds has had a positive impact on the beef industry
Colinta Holdings Pty Ltd have donated this heifer to sell at the National Sale to assist in developing our Charolais Youth. This presents an amazing opportunity for a stud to access top class genetics and structural integrity. Senior and grand champion female was Moongool Thyphena 9. Exhibited by breeders, the Price Family the judge commented “the cow had all the traits he’s looking for including good neck extension softness and efficiency. She is the type of cow we could use very effectively in a herd because the females are the ones that carry around our future stud progeny whilst at the same time maintaining their condition to survive and to raise a calf in varied seasonal conditions”. This female was then selected by Interbreed Female judge Mrs Donna Robson as the Interbreed Champion Female. Reserve senior champion female was Ron Johnstone’s Waterford Lady Gina L33E. This productive young female was sired by Palgrove Hermes and from a DSK bred line. Ron purchased this heifer from the Royal Melbourne Feature Sale in 2016 for $14,000 after she was sashed junior champion heifer.

Silver Calves Win Beef Australia 2018 ANZ National Carcase Competition Western Australian Charolais breeders Bruce, Gaye and Bryden Campbell have repeated their success in the ANZ National Beef Championships announced at Beef Australia 2018. They achieved the double honour of Champion Carcase and Champion Overall Pen of the entire event comprising 1077 entries. The Campbell Family also entered the Champion Pen at Beef Australia 2015 which is a remarkable achievement. This event is truly National with entries from six states judged at their local processors (26 different plants) and assessed by one grader. In 2015 there were 582 entries. Interestingly Western Australian producers have won the past three grand championships Judged by Meat Standards Australia (MSA) Research & Development and Integrity Manager, Janine Lau, the competition aims to provide feedback to producers about their cattle’s compliance to market specifications, lean meat yield, and eating quality as represented by the MSA Index. Ms Lau, who first judged the 2015 competition was impressed by the quality of this year’s entries. “40% of carcases recorded an MSA Index above 60.61, placing them in the top 25% of MSA graded cattle,” she said. The Campbell family’s Charolais sired vealer milk steer was awarded ANZ Achievement Award overall champion carcase. The carcase was from their Beef Australia Highest Points Pen Award. From Angus dams these calves pipped their pure Angus that achieved Reserve Champion Carcase and Reserve Champion Pen.
The winning calves were slaughtered straight off their dams at 9-10 months. The Champion Pen of Charolais sired Silver Calves had a HSCW of 226kg, 227kg and 230kg. These calves were entered in Class 1, Medium Trade Pasture Fed (80kg 260kg). In the Market Specifications section they all scored maximum points for fat depth and meat colour. The three carcases averaged an EMA of77.3cm2 with a Lean Meat Yield of 61.34%. The champion carcase in this pen edged ahead with a superior fat distribution and Lean Meat Yield. The champion pen had an MSA Index score of 64.32, 63.91, and 64.88. The MSA Index model predicts the eating quality of 39 cuts in a carcase using the measurements collected by accredited MSA graders. MSA eating quality scores are the combination of tenderness, juiciness flavour and overall liking of beef. The MSA Index is a weighted average of these scores for the 39 MSA cuts for the most common cooking method, it is not a yield measurement. A carcase with a higher MSA Index will have a higher eating quality score for many cuts compared to a lower MSA Index carcase. In Class 1 with eighteen entries the Campbell pens had three of the top four Index average scores with minute differences between Charolais sired calves and pure Angus. This finding was highlighted in our BIN Research project where larger muscled carcases with lower ossification scores scored well for tenderness. A pure Charolais steer exhibited by Moongool Charolais had the 13th highest MSA Index at 65.50. Coming from the sixth placed pen in Class 6: Export Grain Fed (300kg - 420kg) his team mates were also impressive with MSA Indexes of 63.61 and 62.70. A great result from over 1000 carcases.

Pushing the Scales In 2007 Jim McCoey retired from the car industry and bought 500 acres on Highlands Road, Caveat situated between Yea and Euroa. The first two years he operated the property as a weekend enterprise. However, Jim quickly realised he was losing money farming this way, so he relocated to permanently live at the farm. Buying in Hereford cows and calves, Jim discovered it was hard to get his calves finished off properly with the cold, wet winters. After talking to Chris Pollard from Landmark in 2013 Jim decided to cross Charolais bulls over his Hereford cows. This was a very good decision as the cows calved easier, and the calves thrived through the cold, wet winters~ having cleaner coats, and averaging 40 to 80 kilos per head heavier. Jim now has a clientele of regular buyers wanting his Charolais Hereford cross calves. In 2015 Jim bought a further 500 acre property 8 kilometres away and with help from his son Tom now working in Seymour as an agronomist. They plan to increase their herd from 160 to 200 breeders in the coming years by buying Hereford cows in rather than keeping any replacement heifers. They have just changed to spring calving with the expectation to improving their weaner weights further, and hopefully this will not upset their regular buyers. The calves are grass feed until weaned, and then they are put on a diet of pellets and silage for 2 weeks. They are then maintained on grass and silage until sold.
Jim and Tom state, they are very happy with the extra weight produced, putting more dollars in their pocket because ofthe Charolais Hereford crosses. Their breeding plan is to keep using Charolais over their herd and say the further bonus of the cattle’s excellent temperament are a pleasure to work with in both the paddock and the yards.
Appreciating the Temperament Mirbeau farm loves their Charolais crosses. Tim and Barb Hammon bought their 550 acre property situated thirteen kilometres from Euroa, on the Euroa-Mansfield Road in 2004. The property ran mainly sheep so there has been a lot of changes in the 14 years Barb and farm manager Andrew Douglas have run the farm. Breeding all Angus cows and calves Barb thought all black was boring, so in 2012 bought their first Charolais bull from Ashwood Park Charolais. Splitting the herd in half they joined 75 cows with Angus bulls, the other 75 cows with Charolais bulls. Calving the 150 cows together they found there wasn’t any difference between the breeds with calving problems. However, they could see from early on the silver and red calves had extra growth and were easier and quieter to handle. Over the four years selling their weaners at markets in Euroa, Yea and Packenham they found at times they might gain more cents per kilogram for their Angus calves, but with the extra weight their Charolais crosses grossed more dollars. This year at Euroa all the steers brought about the same price. The Angus heifers brought an extra 20 cents per kilo however, the Charolais cross heifers with extra weight grossed an extra $85 per head. 50
July 2018 Charolais Magazine
Interestingly, despite all the calves running together from birth until sale day the Charolais cross cattle consistently performed better. Mirbeau does not keep any replacement heifers mainly buying Angus and some Shorthorn cows when required, which calve from early February onwards. Barb loves being hands on when yarding the cattle with Andrew, especially with her Charolais.

Victorian Silver Calf Weaner Promotion Sponsor: Boehringer Ingelheim
The Victorian Region with the support of valued sponsor Boeringer Ingleheim conduct a highly succesful promotion in conjunction with the annual weaner sales across the state. The pens of Charolais Silver Calves are judged and the winner receives a pack from Boeringer Inglemeim. This year nine weaner sales were supported showing the increasing recognition in the southern states of the cross into profit advantage of Charolais Silver Calves. Although prices were back in 2018 compared to the outstanding sales in 2017 the Charolais Silver Calves meet with solid sustained demand from the commercial sector.
At every sale Victorian members attend, they present the awards and promote the breed to the commercial producers in attendance. This promotion has been running for many years now and has proven highly successful in putting the Silver Calf theme in front of the industry. This promotion would not be possible without the sponsorship of Boehringer Ingelheim, and the Victorian Region extend their appreciation for the continued support of Boehringer Ingleheim.

Kelly Newton and Mark Davie on Greenlake Station.
Northern Strategy
For Profit Mark Davie, Kelly Newton, along with Kelly’s father Tony and the Newton family are developing the 7,820 hectare Greenlake Station to increase breeders from the 1,600 Brahman content females currently to 2,500. The picturesque property located just over an hour north east of Rockhampton Queensland is in the Rossmoya district. The property boasts a blend of country essential on the flood plain region. High ground comprises a third of the property and some 4,900 hectares are flood plains. With an annual rainfall of 1.5metres the high ground complements the flood country providing a longer grazing season. Mark and Kelly are first generation farmers with a background in food manufacturing, and have been in the industry for only six years. Since Cyclone Marcia destroyed 1,600ha of Blue Gum plantation at Greenlake Station, the operation has become focussed on increasing the land’s carrying capacity. Tony Newton drives the property development program on the property, putting his 50 years of experience in earthmoving and machinery to use, through clearing of cyclone damaged plantation timber, pasture improvement, fencing, and water . The Newton family purchased Greenlake Station after selling a food wholesale and distribution business in 2012. Mark said being so new to the industry came with challenges, but coming from a food manufacturing and marketing background gave the family-run business a clear focus. “We are not generational farmers, we are new to the industry and commercially driven,” he said.

July 2018 Charolais Magazine
Mark has a science background and when the decision was made to breed cattle on the property he conducted extensive research into breed options. With the property located on a humid coastal floodplain known for essential mineral deficiencies and ticks the cow herd was aimed to be high content Bos Indicus. Charolais Cross into Profit articles proved the incentive to include Charolais sires as well as Angus from Bauhinia Park Stud at Emerald to provide diversity in marketing strategies. Greenlake Station also use composite sires from the Jarrah Cattle Company to maintain size and growth in their female breeding herd. The Jarrah sires include Redford’s, (a minimum of 25% Hereford and the remainder Red Brahman) and Jarrah Reds, a blend of Redford genetics and Santa Gertrudis females. The genetic makeup of the Jarrah Reds is 44% - 47% British breed content with the remainder percentage Red Brahman. With this mix of sires, Greenlake Station can breed weaners suitable to head north and south offering marketing flexibility. With all calves raised together Mark and Kelly can accurately track the sire influence in their calves. High content heifers are selected to increase the herd with 300 heifers ready to join currently. These may be AIed to Angus sires before joining the main herd. At this stage all the Charolais and Angus heifers are marketed as Mark wishes to retain maximum heterosis (hybrid vigour) in his breeding program. Some 60 bulls comprise the sire battery that run with the main herd.
Sires are used in a controlled breeding season entering the herd in November. As the property is developed the aim is to place more selection pressure on female fertility further lifting branding rates. With their unique mix of country Mark considers he could bring calving forward to take advantage of the feed cycle on the property. The property boasts a wide range of pastures including marine couch, Rhodes Grass, Pangola and several legumes. There are also some ponded pastures on the property giving even more reliability in feed diversity and pasture availability. Ponded pasture is a permanent pasture system where water is impounded by banks and adapted grasses are grown in the water for green high quality fodder when the water dries off (Miles & Wildin 1996). A molasses based lick supplement that includes urea, phosphorus, copper and selenium is provided to all the herd to help maintain nutrition. Already they have seen a substantial lift in pregnancy rates and are aiming to improve further. Breeders are drenched and treated for ticks four times a year. Vaccination for Lepto and Pestivirus is also undertaken. With much of the property under water during the year helicopters are used for mustering. The temperament of the herd is outstanding and the cattle are very content on inspection. cont page 56....
The Charolais performance is evident in these Greenlake Station calves. The Charolais ability to stamp their progeny with visual uniformity is valuable when marketing weaners in lines at CQLX. 55
Northern Strategy For Profit ...cont from page 55 The initial Charolais introduction was five sires from the Holzwart families, Bauhinia Park herd at Emerald in 2015. Angus sires are also purchased from the Holzwart family. Mark said “Ryan Holzwart had taken the time to visit and inspect his program and offer feedback on sire selection” Mark values the relationship with his bull supplier and takes into account Ryans feedback, BREEDPLAN EBV’s, skin type and muscle pattern when selecting sires. Sires are selected for moderate birthweight as the herd calves in paddocks that are not easily mustered. The first Charolais sired calves were marketed at Gracemere in 2017 and the results indicate to Kelly and Mark the financial advantage Charolais cross calves offer to their enterprise. Mark also appreciates the extra value the Charolais cross heifers generate being ideally suited to the domestic feedlot market. Weaners are currently marketed through a special weaner sale at Gracemere CQLX in early June. Mark aims to send one draft of all calves weighing over 200kg to this sale. At the 2017 Weaner sale Greenlake Charolais steer calves sold to a top of $4.26kg. A client that purchased Greenlake Charolais heifer weaners at this sale provided feedback of their calves putting on 215kg in 6 months on pasture. The 2018 draft sold on the 6th June at CQLX with the Charolais cross steers and heifer providing an extra 10-15kg per head, and 15c per kg above the average weights and price. The Charolais steers topped at $2.84 and 233 kg for weaners. Greenlake Station have been very happy with their Charolais sired calves and see the Charolais influence continuing on the property. Mark acknowledges that the coastal property is better suited to calf production than finishing.
Above: The original sires introduced from Bauhinia Park. Below: Proof of the value of the Charolais infusion is clear in this heifer calf showing excellent muscularity.
Buyers are also aware of the compensatory growth the coastal weaners can produce and Charolais growth genetics in that mix offers increased advantage. With the results achieved to date Mark and Kelly intend to continue with the Charolais cross into profit advantage as they develop their breeding and management strategies further.

Small Herds
Obtaining Effective BREEDPLAN Results One of the most common questions asked by breeders with a relatively small herd is “what size herd do you need to obtain effective results from BREEDPLAN?” This is a difficult question to answer as it depends on a number of factors, however the following document briefly outlines how BREEDPLAN works and what breeders with small herds can do to maximise their results from BREEDPLAN. Although the BREEDPLAN analysis is a very complex analytical model, the basic mechanism by which it works is to directly compare the performance of an animal with the performance of other “similar” animals within the same contemporary group. BREEDPLAN then uses “genetic linkage” to compare the animals in different contemporary groups both within the individual herd and across the entire breed. Calves will be analysed in the same contemporary group if they: • were bred in the same herd, • are of the same sex, • are of the same birth number (ie. twins not compared with single calves), • are of the same birth status (ie. ET calves not compared with AI/natural calves), • were born in the same calving year, • were born within 45 days (for birth and 200 day weight) or 60 days (for 400 and 600 day weight) of each other, • have been weighed on the same day (& have the same weighing history), • have been run under the same conditions
58
July 2018 Charolais Magazine
Therefore, small herds must try and ensure there are at least two animals that meet the above criteria to ensure the performance records for their animals are effective and they obtain effective results from BREEDPLAN. Where there is only one animal represented in a contemporary group, there are no other “similar” animals to which it can be directly compared and thus the performance submitted for it will not be used in the BREEDPLAN analysis. Taking this further, the effectiveness of an individual animal’s performance record increases as more animals are represented within each contemporary group. The effect of contemporary group size on the effectiveness of performance is illustrated in the graph on the following page. As illustrated in the graph, the greatest increase in effectiveness is observed going from 1 animal to 2 animals in a contemporary group. That is, a record in a single animal contemporary group is not effective while a performance record in a contemporary group of 2 is 50% effective. Once 5 to 10 animals are represented in a contemporary group, the increase in effectiveness diminishes quite rapidly with increasing group size. However, the general aim for all herds should be to maximise the contemporary group size. Considering this, there are a number of strategies that breeders can use to ensure they maximise the number of calves included within each contemporary group, maximise the effectiveness of each record and subsequently maximise the results they obtain from their BREEDPLAN recording. Although these strategies are of particular importance to smaller herds, they should also be considered by larger herds as a means of fine tuning their performance recording.

Contemporary Group Size
1. Restricted calving periods As calves are only included in the same contemporary group if they are born within 45 or 60 days of one another, it is essential that small herds have as shorter calving period as practical. A calving period of 6 to 8 weeks is ideal.
5. Associated Herds In the situation where two herds run their animals together on the same property,BREEDPLAN can associate the two memberships to allow the performance of calves in both herds to be directly compared together.
2. Run all calves under the same management conditions Where possible, all calves should be run under the same management conditions. If calves are to be split into different groups it is useful to weigh the whole group before it is split. For example, it is possible to take 200 day weights anywhere between 80 to 300 days of age, so you can weigh all male calves as a group before a portion of them are castrated.
6. Use more than one sire More than one sire should be used in any joining program. BREEDPLAN requires at least 2 sires to be represented in each contemporary group if the performance of the progeny is going to contribute to the calculation of EBVs for their sire. Where AI programs are used they should be timed so that AI sired calves are born at the same time as calves sired by natural joinings. 7. Supply recipient dam details Herds that use embryo transfer need to identify the breed and age of the recipient dams of ET calves. If the breed of recipient dams is not supplied ET calves are split into single animal analysis groups and therefore their own performance cannot be used. To maximise the analysis of ET calves by BREEDPLAN, it is preferable if the recipient dams used are all the same breed.
3. Weigh all animals on the same day As BREEDPLAN will only directly compare the performance of animals that has been recorded on the same day, it is important to weigh all animals within each contemporary group on the same day. 4. Inclusion of commercial/unregistered animals ** Many breeders have a small stud herd run in conjunction with commercial animals. If you have a commercial herd of similar breed content to your stud animals, it may also be possible to record these animals with your relevant Breed Association/Society. This will allow a greater number of animals to be included in the same contemporary group.
If you require any further information about small herds or have any queries regarding the submission of performance data to BREEDPLAN please contact either Keryn at BREEDPLAN 02 6773 3059 or SBTS staff.

I cannot think of a more appropriate way to start my first President’s report than by paying tribute to my predecessor Trevor Cottee. The amount of time and energy Trevor put into making sure the World Congress was a success as well as his help in preparing the Charolais Journal has made Charolais almost a full time job in the past year. On behalf of all Charolais members I would like to extend a big “thank you” to Trevor and Barbara for all they have done for the society. While on Society stalwarts, Trevor had the honour at the World Congress dinner of presenting Charolais Society Life Memberships to David Dixon, Bill Hayes and John Sullivan. These men have all served the society with distinction over many years right up to the World Congress. John and Bill were both members of the Congress organising committee and David Dixon was chairman. I feel we must pay special tribute to David and his capable wife Rosemary who with their exceptional organisational and people skills made the Congress tour run so smoothly. On behalf of all members I congratulate the congress committee on a job well done. I feel the World Congress marked the coming of age of Charolais in Australia. The overseas guests certainly enjoyed and appreciated the hospitality Australia extended towards them. Hey marvelled at the vastness of our land and the varying types of climate and terrain where Charolais cattle have adapted so well. One of the highlights of the congress was the magnifient display of over 200 stud cattle at Sydney Royal Easter Show. Charolais again set the pace achieving one fifth of the total gross at the stud beef sales - $205,300. Charolais also recorded highest average for led steers of $749.74 from 19 breeds with a top price of $2034. Congratulations to all exhibitors whose participation made this great spectacle possible. To see a standing room only crowd as judge Anthony Coates made his decisions made me feel very proud to be a Charolais breeder. A special thanks to all the sponsors and property hosts whose generosity made the success of the World Congress assured. To all members, regions and friends it was a terrific team effort the way everybody worked together to make the congress the success it was. Into the future the Council looks forward to working with members to get the Charolais message through and increasing our market share in the Australian beef industry.
Aussies Take a Bow Chairman: David Dixon I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to the congress committee for the wonderful contribution they have made to the planning and implementation of the 27th World Congress. The support and loyalty alone by the Council and the committee certainly helped to bring the event to a successful conclusion. I must single out Trevor Cottee, John Sullivan and Bill Hayes for their dedication and loyalty to the cause and myself. It leaves me humble in expressing my and the societies thanks for a wonderful team effort. The financial results almost certainly reflect the immense amount of work that Trevor contributed to the raising of sponsorship. This task was daunting at times in view of the economic and seasonal climate prevailing during the last two years. Trevor achieved a final result that I am sure has been most beneficial to both the society and sponsors. The “property hosts who provided the bulk of the Bronze sponsorship can be credited along with the show exhibitors with providing the highlights of the congress. Not one property host during the past two years waivered from their commitment to the congress and they certainly did themselves and us proud with their presentation of properties, cattle, food and drinks - and fine hospitality. The feature exhibition of cattle at Sydney Royal Show must have surely provided the Charolais Society of Australia with its most rewarding day ever in its 22 year history. Every exhibitor will surely remember that day for many years to come and I sincerely thank every one of them for their sacrifices which made this wonderful day the success it was for our World Congress. Our thanks go also to our Secretariat, The Science Centre Foundation, the director Ruth Inall and her staff for their dedication to the success of the congress. Neil Inall, chairmen of the seminar was his usual polished and professional self and contributed greatly to the success of the event. I would also like to conclude by thanking Rosemary for her dedication and loyalty to the committee and myself. Thank you for the opportunity and pleasure of serving as your chairman for the 27th World Congress Committee.
Welcome
Julie Skinner Julie Skinner was the successful applicant for the position of assistant registrar at Head Office and she has tackled the job with ability and enthusiasm from Day One. History shows Julie made a great contribution to our Society with a distinguished career with our Society.
National Executive Officer: Terry Skuthorpe In another major achievement for Australian Charolais, our first Group BREEDPLAN was released immediately prior to the World Congress. Foremost for recognition are the eleven Charolais breeders who put their hands in their pockets to make the project possible. In addition, Council has set the 1993 AGM for Dubbo, in conjunction with the inaugural National Show and Sale. Our society is on the move, we need all members to contribute to the momentum by taking part in society events where possible. If we all continue to extend ourselves, the impact of Australian Charolais on the beef industry will be amazing.
