From The President

Brendan Scheiwe, CSA President Charolais International Vice President

Wow it’s hard to believe six months has past since writing my last report in January . It continues to be a very tough year for most of eastern Australia as it’s still in drought. We have seen huge loses of cattle in the north due to floods and a down turn in prices due to droughts throughout the rest of the country. On the upside, it’s very pleasing to see Charolais or Charolais x calves consistently topping the store markets around the country. It was good to see calves still achieving over $1000 at a recent weaner sale in Queensland. I’m pleased to say our breed is still going strong in the west. Our Western members achieved good results in bull sales in Western Australia with an increase in bulls sold and the average sale price up on last year. Unfortunately the Victorian sales were down slightly due to dry conditions around the state and up the eastern sea board. Our AGM was well attended in South Australia this year with plenty of interest in the society and its way forward . It was great to see such a good role up and I must thank the South Australian members for their hospitality towards the councillors on their visit to South Australia. Sydney show was successful for our breed with congratulations to both Moongool and Caloona studs on wining the Hordern trophy for interbreed pair and Moongool Fanmail 8 taking out the Urquhart Trophy. Congratulations to all the exhibitors on an outstanding line up of Charolais.

The Charolais National is fast approaching and we have some really great support in the numbers of cattle entered from members, even in this dry period that we have been experiencing. It’s great to see and let’s hope we all can get behind it and support this not to be missed event. Things are really starting to take shape with the 2020 world congress. The committee are working behind the scenes to get a structured plan in place and it’s going to be an event not to be missed. I would like to thank all the supporters of the Magazine for all your ads and commitment to the breed as I believe we now have one of the best breed magazines around and it’s a way for all breeders to promote their business throughout Australia and the world. A big thank you must go to Colin for keeping the quality of the Magazine at such a high level. A big thank you to Colin , Deearn , Hayley and Lucy for all their hard work and commitment to our breed and the professional manner the office is run. In closing I would like to thank my fellow councillors for their work over the last six months. I would also like to thank all members as it has been trying times for all through the drought and let’s hope that some good falls of rain are just around the corner for all of us. I wish everyone with bull sales over the next six month the very best with great results and for a very prosperous spring season.

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

Droughts, floods, elections, activists, can anything else be thrown at the average beef producer in 2019? This certainly has been a year of stark contrasts from the devastation of flooding in Northern Queensland to the continued dry in many other areas of the country. The willingness of our industry to work together and help out another is heart-warming and encouraging. Even more encouraging was city based Australians contributing to fund raising and exhibiting a genuine concern for rural families. In many areas the drought is far from over and I hope that everybody receives rainfall where it is needed in the not too distant future. We do know that herds have culled heavily and non performing animals have left the gene pool. When the decision to maintain a core herd is implemented selection pressure becomes intense and long term this will yield benefits. The reality is the agricultural industry has limitations beyond our control, rainfall, temperature and international policies. As breeders of seed stock we should be using all tools available to generate more efficient seed stock to offer to the commercial industry. We are fortunate that Charolais have some built in advantages when it comes to growth, muscle and ability to handle hot and dry conditions. It was interesting reading Dr Doran Garrick’s comments in the rural press after speaking at the recent Angus Conference. He likened the total variation in a cattle breed, as a genetic “cloud” which could be pushed in any direction the industry wanted. The bottom line was as a breeder/breed society; you need to have a breeding goal. In any industry ultimate success comes down to producing a product that is desired, basic marketing principles really. We need to ensure that our Charolais genetics are performing for all sectors beyond the farm gate. The breeder, backgrounder, feedlotter, butcher and then the consumer. This isn’t an overnight sensation, it is an ongoing process especially when the generational interval of cattle is considered. However there is no better time to focus on what leaves your property, work to your breeding goal. The first step in any journey is the first step to achieving your goals.

Through all of this Charolais have seen some encouraging trends. The Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association annual reports have just been released with the 2018 data. Our registration statistics increased in 2018 to just shy of the 8,000 mark. This number maintains our position as the seventh largest breed based on primary and secondary registration data. Registrations in the entire European sector of the registered cattle industry also showed positive trends. Interestingly some breeds which are advertising rapid growth did not reflect this in the registration statistics. It should be remembered that due to time lag in registering calves most of our registration statistics is for the previous year and not the current year. Also it was interesting that several breeds that have launched branded beef products have not seen a subsequent rise in registration activity. A major achievement for 2019 has been updating our constitution. The Board and staff worked with legal advice to completely update our Constitution. This has been a major effort and the new constitution was voted on and approved by the membership at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in South Australia. There were no changes to the underlying corporate structure of the Society. It is important that as legislation is amended and introduced that our core governance principles are regularly updated for compliance. At the Council meeting held prior to the AGM, Brendan Scheiwe was re-elected President and we welcomed Murray Ferme to the Board as the South Australian representative. Alan Goodland returns as Vice President and Matthew Collins continues his role as Treasurer. Robin Yost and Ken Manton round out our Board.

Jimmy Dean

I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

Long standing Board members Chris Knox and Michael Osborne have both taken a well-deserved break from Society management after a combined 19 years of service. Chris held the position of President for three years and we extend our gratitude to both Chris and Michael for their input in developing our Society and breed. Holding the Board meeting and Annual General Meeting in South Australia was very successful with the Board members attending the local group sale allowing for direct feedback to our Board. Several Board members and the General Manager then attended a successful feature show at Mt Barker on the weekend. I extend our appreciation to our South Australian members for their hospitality and efforts in hosting the Society AGM. The success of Autumn bull sales has been distinctly regionalised. In Western Australia sales have seen strong clearance results at auction. The Autumn sales topped at $12,250 for a yearling at the Liberty Yearling Sale. Liberty Pickup Man P36 (P)(R/F) was purchased by the Goodchild family, JIG Grazing, Waroona. The March 2018 born ET-bred bull by Rangan Park Redemption E42 was 656kg with scans of 8mm P8 fat, 7mm rib fat and an 110cm2 eye muscle area (EMA). Overall 65 bulls sold at auction to average $5,623. In the east sales have been more subdued with reduced clearance due to the ongoing dry conditions and reduction in commercial female numbers. The top price sire in the Autumn selling season was Ascot Namesake N15 purchased by Silverstone Livestock (Albany WA) for $26,000. This bull was sired by Ascot Juggernaut J134E, the grand champion at Beef Australia 2015 and offered at the Ascot Autumn Sale. What has been pleasing is an increased demand for Australian Charolais genetics internationally and there is a report in this edition expanding on some of these sales. cont page 14....

13

From the Office ...cont from page 13 I have the utmost confidence in our Australian Charolais and their ability and look forward to members presenting an outstanding display to our international guests in 2020. We are well down the track of organising our World Congress activities and schedule and I thank the World Congress sub-committee for their efforts to date. The proposed program has a good mix of cattle, tourist opportunities to give our visitors a glimpse of our nation and a cross section of country. Obviously with the size of Australia we cannot see everything. I am confident that many visitors will extend their trip to take in other opportunities whilst here. The Society has selected the next Youth Ambassador to represent Charolais Society of Australia at the International Youth Exchange again hosted by Canada. This announcement will be made at the National dinner with our ambassador leaving shortly after for Canada. Last year’s ambassador Heidi Nicholls is still in Canada having secured employment enabling her to further increase her skills and networks. Still in the youth news, Harris Thompson ably judged several breeds at Sydney Royal this year following on from winning the Australian Junior Judging Award last year at the Adelaide Royal. Charolais enjoyed considerable success at the Sydney Royal this year winning both the prestigious awards. The Hordern Trophy for Supreme Interbreed Pair was won by the Price (Moongool Charolais) and Franco (Caloona Park) families. The Urquhart Trophy for Supreme Beef Exhibit was won by Moongool Fanmail 8, a tremendous example of the Charolais breed. More details are included in this edition. Charolais commercial progeny have been in demand in many sectors. Shipments of commercial and registered heifers have been purchased by Chinese interests. Most of these heifers have been certified by ILRIC and inspected for type and quality. Saleyard reports in rural publications have consistently reported Charolais sales in their reports.

14

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

These reports have come from across the nation proving the adaptability of the Charolais breed. We have seen strong competition at weaner sales for Charolais sired calves. Albeit many weaner sales in the north had reduced numbers on offer. Yardings such as George and Furhmanns Casino Weaner sales numerically were significantly smaller as many producers offloaded calves earlier but the quality on offer was exceptional. Restockers know the doing ability of these calves and bid accordingly. Victorian region ran twelve sponsored weaner sales this year with the support of Boehringer Ingelheim providing a drench pack for every champion pen. These sales are around the state and for the first time included two sales in the Mountain Weaner Circuit. Traditionally these sales are Hereford orientated. Stock and Land reported the sale as “typical of the Benambra sale, the Hereford breed was dominant with a handful of Charolais calves embedded in the 1331 head yarding”. Trevor and Gwen Robinson and Vern Wilson took the time to fly the Charolais flag at the mountain sales as this is an area that could develop. Charolais sired calves were the second top pen on price. Western Australia also ran two very successful Silver Calf sales in conjunction with established weaner yardings. Putting the proof of Charolais “cross into profit” advantage in front of producers is a very effective promotion and I congratulate all breeders involved in these promotions. Moving towards our 50th anniversary of registered Charolais in Australia is very exciting. Once we were considered an “exotic” breed but we are now firmly entrenched into the landscape. Most of the credit for this goes to our membership breeding and supplying industry relevant genetics for the commercial sector. We don’t have the budget of some of our competitors but we can be thankful Charolais genetics have proven time and time again their commercial desirability. Wishing you all effective rains and look forward to seeing you at events in the future.

Vale: Arthur Rickards OAM Australian agriculture has lost one of its giants with the death of Arthur Rickards after a long battle with illness. Dr Rickards died in Armidale in April this year aged 77 years. Philip Arthur Rickards OAM grew up in rural Queensland where he was a state champion junior middle distance runner in 1957 and one of the few people who carried the Olympic torch for the 1956 and 2000 Olympics. Dr Rickards established the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) on July 1, 1970, with two staff and plenty of dreams about how to facilitate the adoption of new UNE technology across rural industries. During the next four decades under Dr Rickards’ guidance, ABRI developed and/or implemented many innovative technologies that have made significant contributions to agriculture, particularly the livestock sector. Arthur had a long list of achievements with the development of BREEDPLAN significant. The Online Herdbook was also significant and most members use this facility extensively. Arthur retired in 2011 but continued in a part-time business manager role at ABRI. The Charolais Society has benefited from many of the advancements developed at ABRI through Arthur’s direction.

The Charolais Society has used versions of the ABRI data base service since 1979. Former National Executive Officer Terry Skuthorpe was seconded from ABRI at the start of his Charolais career in 1989. Terry went on to work with the Society for fourteen years. Dr Rickards was an opportunist and a networker always ready to pounce on government funding for innovative projects or a government department looking for a third party to provide genetic evaluation services. Alex McDonald representing the Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA), said Dr Rickards had been a tough but fair negotiator who never raised his voice. “He had great attention to detail, leaving nothing to chance,” he said. “Arthur had a huge network of contacts from fellow undergraduates, university academics, business people and former employees which he used widely.” In 2016 he took on the role of president of ARCBA, a peak body for breed associations which he founded with his great friend, Dick Vincent, WA. Dr Rickards was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 1996 and an honorary doctorate by the University of New England in 2003, in recognition of his achievements and contribution to Australian agriculture.

the overall performance of the Charolais, including weight gain, good turn off rates at a reasonably young age, temperament and being good mothers was the key to their success within the operation.

Left: The herd coming up a laneway to the yards with the Charolais influence obvious. Above: Mt Florance weaners at drafting.

Charolais cattle are not synonymous with the Pilbara region of Western Australia, but this Euro breed has certainly found a home and thrived at Mt Florance station. The 105,000 hectare (260,000 acre) station is on the Fortescue River between Wittenoom and the Millstream National Park, giving it some handy geographical advantages, especially when coupled with the right seasonal conditions. Jamie Richardson’s family has been on Mt Florance for more than a century and Jamie, 40, has lived there all his life apart from boarding school and a couple of years working elsewhere. His affinity with the land is evident through his enthusiasm for the family’s cattle breeding and their outlook for the future. In the past Mt Florance was both a sheep and cattle station. It used to run Herefords, which according to Jamie, had lost favour in the market and become unpopular, so they knew they had to change breeds and have been breeding Charolais since the early 1990s. “We wanted to change into an animal that had the same qualities as the Hereford in terms of temperament, but also in terms of weight and performance,” Jamie said. “Basically through a conversation with some friends in Boyup Brook who had a Charolais stud, we decided Charolais was going to be a good option to trial.” He said since that initial foray into the breed they had not looked back. Mt Florance runs a breeding herd of about 1600 head that is made up of mostly Charolais – all their bulls are Charolais, with Charolais cows and some Charbray and Brahman mixed in. Jamie said the overall performance of the Charolais, including weight gain, good turn off rates at a reasonably young age, temperament and being good mothers was the key to their success within the operation. “For example when we are weighing steers and there is a steer with a reasonably high content of Charolais in the race, along with a Brahman cross steer that physically looks identical, it will be the Charolais that comes in 30-40kg heavier every time,” Jamie said. cont page 20....

19

Mt Florance pastoralist Jamie Richardson following cattle up a laneway to the yards.

Pilbara Charolais At Home ...cont from page 19 Jamie said “that is the thing about them, the Charolais have much better weight gain and muscle against a comparison breed.” The Richardsons like to mix up their genetic lines, with new genetics coming through to maintain the performance of their cattle. An example of this was early on in their breeding when they noticed that some Charolais bulls had a tendency to throw progeny with really woolly coats, so over time they selected fine-coated bulls which they followed through to their replacement breeding cow selection. “Also utilising some Brahman and a very small amount of Droughtmaster genetics helped us to refine the coat a little more and increase the live export potential of the herd,” Jamie said. “With regards to marketing and welfare issues in the future based around dehorning, we are now targeting poll genetics in our operation and aiming to have less and less horns within the herd through appropriate replacement heifer selection.” Jamie refers to their cattle as ‘Pilbara Charolais’ – they are a very dominant Charolais base with continual mixing that has allowed them to adapt to the conditions on the station, just like other breeds have adapted over the years. “They have become really hardy,” he said. “We did cop a little criticism at first saying that Charolais wouldn’t be able to handle the Pilbara conditions.” Part of the reason their breeding operation is so successful is their approach to bull buying, with age being just as important a factor as any of the main breeding traits. “We prefer to buy our bulls young straight out of the paddock , between 15-18 months, sometimes up to two years depending on the bulls, as we find it gives us the truest impression of the animal”, Jamie said. “We find this gives them time to develop up here and grow into the conditions, they pretty much all come up the same and we look for growth rate, fertility, confirmation and physical structure”. “They need good feet and a toughness to be able to handle it up here which is one of the reasons why we like to buy from the paddock.” Their breeding runs on a ratio of four per cent, with Jamie conceding there was always the clean skin/mickey bulls to factor into this equation also. Their breeding is year-round and weaners are taken off, down to 130kg.

20

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

They are then separated into sales, young steers and replacement heifers. “Summer is the ideal calving time, as it is the wet season here,” Jamie said. “But breeder condition and conception can be tied in to major rain events.” The Charolais marketability has always been one of their key benefits according to Jamie and they have been able to sell to varying markets, from live export, saleyards and privately to farmers and feedlots, as well as directly to processors. However, the success of their breeding is also due to Mt Florance’s location and the environmental conditions the herd has been able to adapt to and take advantage of. Jamie said this year the rainfall had been reasonable and they were looking forward to some good summer rains, having not yet reached the 320 millimetre average. The station straddles the Fortescue River and is flanked by the Hammersley and Chichester Ranges. “The proximity to the ranges gives us really good runoff into the floodplain areas,” he said. “This gives a really good top dressing, and although there has not been a lot of research done on it, phosphorus deficiency is not an issue here like with other areas.” The cattle have a diverse range of native grasses and shrubs to eat, including Mitchell and Weeping grasses, Roebourne Plains grass, Mulga and snakewood thickets, spinifex and also buffel grass. There is only one spring in the river itself, so the Richardsons use solar power bores to supply the water points for the cattle. Covering such an expanse sees their mustering from May through to September, conducted with the use of two hired helicopters, multiple vehicles and motorbikes, with two main permanent yards, holding paddocks and laneways set-up. Once mustered, the sale of the cattle is able to be as adaptable to the markets as the Charolais breed has been to the Pilbara. “The type of cattle we have and our location, being fairly central to northern and southern markets, does make it easier for us than some others,” Jamie said. Gingin processor, Borello Beef WA buys their heavy slaughter cattle and their continued custom is a nod to the satisfaction of the buyer and the quality of the cattle produced at the station. Jamie said the future was positive for their breeding program and they would continue to breed along their Charolais line with a focus on quality, as has always been their aim.

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

The quality of the Charolais exhibits at Sydney Royal was outstanding although slightly down numerically due to severe drought conditions across the eastern states. The judge was Mr David Smith from Kyan Park and Palgrove Charolais studs. Well known in the industry it was a pleasure to watch David work through the cattle on display. Junior heifer classes were well supported with Mr Smith selecting Winchester Daisy Duke N16E (P) as his junior champion. Exhibited by Gavin and Kristie O’Brien this heifer came from the 16 to 18 months class and was sired by LT Wyoming Wind 4020. Her dam Minnie-Vale Quist Y3 has 38 progeny in the herdbook including half sister Winchester Quist J24E the Pickles Auctions Showcase National Champion Female in 2017. Reserve junior champion female was Moongool Extra Special 3 sired by Minnie-Vale Joker. Venturon Livestock exhibited two junior heifers for two class wins. Venturon Hillary (P) sired by Sparrows Kingston 139Y won 12 to 14 months and Venturon Natural Beaty (P) sired by Venturon Keystone won the 19 to 20 months class. This heifer was previously Junior champion Perth Royal 2018 and Reserve Junior champion heifer Adelaide Royal 2018.

Junior & Grand Champion Bull, Hordern Trophy Winner: Caloona Park Nugget (P)(RF) exhibited by Steve and Louie Franco.

Junior & Grand Champion Bull Caloona Park Nugget (P)(RF) exhibited by Steve and Louie Franco. Michael Millner, Judge David Smith, and the Franco Family, Brooke, Steve, Louie, Natalie, Georgia, Sharnie and kneeling Olivia & Rhys Franco & Daniel Agostino.

Warner and Co won two junior heifer classes with Ash-Lin Princess 21 (P) sired by LT Ledger ( under 9 months) and Ash-Lin Wonder Woman 13 (P) (18 to 19 months) sired by Gerrard Pastor. Caloona Park won the 14 to 16 months class with a daughter of Airlie Kit K127E. Moongool Fanmail 8 after winning Senior and Grand champion at Sydney in 2018 returned to repeat her success. Sired by Advance Dozer D107 this large framed red factor female paraded with an exceptional heifer calf at foot. The judge commented “she is easy doing with sheer volume, great calf, good structure and is a credit to her breeder.” A half sister to the junior champion heifer Winchester Quist M1 (P) placed second in the strong cow class. Reserve senior champion female went to Venturon Livestocks’ Venturon Naughty But Nice (P). A Kooyong Kirwan daughter parading with her first calf at foot, this female comes from a leading donor at Venturon. Naughty But Nice won the 24 to 30 months class. The Franco Family dominated the junior bull classes winning three classes. Caloona Park Nugget (P)(RF) won the 18 to 19 months class before being awarded Junior and Grand Champion Bull. This well balanced bull weighed in at 826kg (DWG 1.48kg/day) and scanned an EMA of 133cm2 with 12/9mm fat. The judge praised this calf for his balance, growth and easy doing characteristics. This bull was sired by Caloona Park Kodiak and from a home bred female.

Reserve junior champion bull was St Antonio North (P)(RF) sired by Minnie-Vale Kraal. This bull at 19 months weighed 934kg with a 135cm2 EMA. This bull was exhibited by breeder Canturi Investments. Caloona Park Neon (P) sired by Temana K66 won the 14 to 16 months class with an outstanding daily weight gain of 1.62kg and 130cm2 EMA. An Airlie Kit K127 son Caloona Park Nike Air (P) (RF) won the large 16 to 18 months class. Nigel and Casey Wieck won the Bull under 12 months with a Sonreap Benson son, CB Phantom (P)(RF). Sonreap Benson is a son of Advance Liberty Y73, the winner of the Urqhuart and Hordern Trophies in 2009. Ash-Lin Next Edition sired by Glenlea Honourable won the Senior champion bull for the Warner Family. Weighing in at 890kg at 21 months Next Edition exhibited a very smooth muscle pattern. Reserve Senior champion bull was Moongool Naplam (P) sired by Temana Golden Logie. A feature of the Charolais sires on display at Sydney Royal was the evenness of cover the sires displayed. Caloona Park continued their success in the group classes with wins in the Two Bulls, and Breeders Group. Myona Charolais showed the winning Sires Progeny group by SVY Grizzly 521C. The success of the breed in the Interbreed is detailed on the next page. Congratulations to all exhibitors on a tremendous breed display.

Urquhart and Hordern Trophy 2019 It may have been an Angus Feature but apparently no one told the Charolais breeders. With over 300 head of Angus from every Australian state there were expectations they would have a strong influence on the Interbreed competitions. When the two most prestigeous trophies were announced in the Interbreed, Team Charolais were smiling with success in the Urquhart and Hordern Trophies. In the Urquhart Trophy for Best Beef Exhibit, Moongool Fanmail 8 first won the best female on ground before placing over a very impressive Red Angus sire. Judges Ian Galloway, Roma, Queensland, Ben Mayne, Warialda, Guy Lord, Walcha, were full of praise for the four-year-old and her eight-month-old heifer calf who Mr Lord said exuded femininity. “She is beautifully elegant through the front, the neck and shoulder and she is obviously doing a great job on that calf and when we look at the udder and teat placement on that cow, I think they are almost perfect,” he said. This win is the sixth for the Charolais breed from the 20 years of the award. The Hordern Trophy was donated by Mr & Mrs Anthony Hordern to commemorate over 100 years of continuous service to the RAS of NSW by the Hordern Family. Mr Hordern was also the inaugural President of the Charolais Society of Australia. 24

It has been awarded to the Best Breed Pair since 1980, the inaugural year when incidently Charolais from Mandalong won the trophy. Research shows Charolais have won the award 10 times in the 40 years of being presented. This year the well matched red factor pairing of Caloona Park Nugget (P)(RF) and Moongool Fanmail 8 (RF) caught the eye of judge Mr David Bondfield. The Charolais and Angus teams were called forward before Mr Bondfield made his decision. He commented “I consider they are the best balanced pairs, the two best pairs with the least amount of compromise in them and the two most functional pairs that show me the most profit drivers that purebred stock can offer the industry.” When selecting the Charolais pair as champions Mr Bondfield commented “ the Charolais cow and calf, I see a really easy keeping, really sweet fronted type of cow, lots of milk, easy doing and a standout heifers calf and doing what a cow is meant to do - maintaining herself and putting plenty of milk and substance in that calf. I really like the balance in this bull, he is a really great fronted bull, alert, mobile, strong top, plenty of carcase and carries that carcase and weight with ease.” For Caloona Park and Moongool this was their first success in the Hordern Trophy at Sydney Royal.

Casino Weaner Sales One of the highlights of the New South Wales Weaner sales is the three day George and Fuhrmann event held at Casino. The sale attracts large lines of Charolais sired Bos Indicus cross calves which are sold on Day Two of the event. A lack of rain saw a reduction in calves on offer but the cattle penned offered great opportunity for purchasers. Calves from this sale have a great reputation for steaming ahead from the coastal calf production systems on the North Coast. Many of the top calves from this sale, find their way into the Brisbane Ekka Prime Cattle classes where they perform with distinction. Big rain across wide areas of Queensland in the wake of ex-Tropical Cyclone Trevor meant values jumped more than a 100 cents a kilogram (liveweight) at George and Fuhrmann’s annual weaner sales in Casino. Buyers from Moura, St George, Blackall, Wandoan and Goondiwindi jumped into the 3,200 head on offer on the Thursday and Friday (Day 2 & 3) following, in places, drought breaking rain. Buyers from North West NSW were also active on the quality line-up, including feedlot buyers from Inverell and Moree. In contrast to the previous week’s Day one British breeds sale, Queensland buyers went hard on both Euro and Bos indicus cattle, paying 290c/kg to 305c/kg for the heavier weaners and similar money for well grown heifers.

The New South Wales Region of the Charolais Society sponsor this event and the champion pen of Charolais sired Steers and Heifers both receive $1,000 cash bonus. The judge this year was James Millner from Rosedale Charolais, Blayney NSW. The champion pen of steers came from father and son team Paul and Stephen Boland, East Coraki, who had 50 head in the sale. The Bolands top 412kg pen made 300c/kg to return $1196. The Boland Family have acheived very good results in the RAS of NSW Feedlot trial held every year. The champion pen of heifers were Charolais/Salers from Wayne and Deanne Hall, Homeleigh via Kyogle. Wayne is a butcher and has a great knowledge of profitable beef carcasses. The general run of Euro steers made 280c/kg to 300c/kg with plenty into the 300c/kg. Heifers generally made 270c/kg to 290c/kg.

Primex MSA Trial Champion Primex Field Days introduced a beef trial that concluded at the annual Primex Field Days held in Casino NSW. Primex Field Days director Bruce Wright said the competition aimed to reflect as closely as possible the real-life situation of cattle entering the grain-fed, MSA graded, domestic supply chain. The trials are compliant with Woolworths’ MSA grain-fed program, providing producers the unique opportunity to benchmark the performance of their animals. The goal was to reward those animals that not only meet requirements for carcass quality but are also profitable at each stage. The trials began in early February at B Feeders, Rodgers Creek, near Warwick. Charolais cross steers entered by Palgrove Pastoral Co performed exceptionally well winning the grand champion individual and other awards. These steers incorporated Ultrablack genetics. Palgrove has been breeding their Palgrove Ultrablacks since 2009. Ultrablacks are black hided bulls, Angus based with a Brahman infusion of less than twenty percent. These steers with European, British and Bos Indicus genetics are achieving exceptional hybrid vigour resulting in their excellent performance. Palgrove’s Manager – Business Development and Genetics – Ben Noller commented on the trial “It tells you the real story of where you are heading and whether you are doing the right thing in your breeding decisions. We enter a few of these competitions across the country so to win this event all the way through from feeding, weight-gain, through to the carcase … and you are going up against your peers. It was good to be benchmarked against them and to come out on top is very good”. Entrants in the competition included the widely acclaimed Yulgilbar Santa Gertrudis who also performed strongly highlighting the quality of the cattle entered. Future goals of the organisers is to assist in educating the buying public, as to what we actually do. There is a great opportunity for us going forward to educate more the buying public as to what makes a good steak. [ www.primex.net.au ] 28

International Interest For Genetics Traditionally there has been an inflow of Charolais genetics into Australia and limited export. This has been the case for most breeds with imports generally outranking exports. The late Dr Arthur Rickards was passionate about developing export markets for our Australian bred genetics and at the time of his death was lobbying the govenment for resources. As a comparision, on the world stage the US exported $142 million dollars worth of bovine semen in 2012 and Canada’s sales were worth $88 million. In contrast Australia exported just $1.5 million worth of semen in the same year. Over the years there has been a steady exchange of genetics with breeders in New Zealand and now the trend is heading worldwide. With affordable modern transportation, Social media and the world wide web, Australian breeding programs are closer than ever to the international community. The world really has become a smaller place. Our unique environment, limited labour resources and sheer size of properties has contributed to a highly functional Charolais type being bred here in Australia. We also have an advantage of being clean for most diseases and can export into most countries. Several herds have exported genetics internationally recently including back to France. Palgrove Pastoral Co herd sire, Palgrove Justice J603E, is the first Australian bred sire to have semen used in France. A homozygous poll sire, Justice has been used in Canada and the United Kingdom as well. His first crop of calves in Canada produced the Junior Division Champion and Reserve Champion Futurity Female at Agribition for Horseshoe E Charolais.

At the Southern Charolais Breeders Sale, Tambo River Nebraska was purchased by the Thailand Government. Tambo River Nebraska topped the Southern Breeders Sale in 2019. According to stud co-principal Duncan Newcomen, Tambo River has been supplying cattle to Thailand for the past 10 years, with the bulls being used to improve the quality of the country’s beef herd. Nebraska was sired by well-known Canadian bull, Kayr Velocity, from a female with eight generations of Australian breeding behind her. Duncan Newcomen said “the twoyear-old embryo transfer (ET) bull featured a balanced mix of traits including adequate muscle and fat cover and an excellent temperament”. In the United Kingdom Welcome Swallow Easy Gain has had his first progeny registered. This sire is a BREEDPLAN trait leader for Birthweight, 200, 400, 600 Day Weight and Milk in the recent Australasian analysis. Venturon Hamish has recently had his American and Canadian semen rights sold by Andrew, Anne and Harris Thompson. Hamish is sired by trait leader Venturon Crusty Demon and is the main walking sire at Venturon. Canadian rights were purchased by the Johnson Family, Johnson Charolais and USA rights by the Kisner Family of Wild Indian Acres, De Soto, Missouri. Registered genetics have been exported to China and recently we have seen several shipments of heifers head to China. These have been registered and unregistered. The genetic interest hasn’t been restricted to sires with Glenlea selling a flush in Valley View Estella 416 (P) in their recent female and genetic sale. This flush sold to Faraway Charolais based in North Carolina. Estella is sired by Impair from the famous Palgrove Estella line. With the World Congress next year there is a great opportunity to showcase your breeding program to visitors. Having a team at the Brisbane Charolais Feature show in conjunction with the World Congress may be the starting point in a conversation that could lead to export. Remember that different countries have varying protocol and the path to export is not always smooth and can have speed humps along the way. All cattle breeders from around the world are seeking that “next sire or dam” to take their program forward and it could be the sire or donor dam in your paddock.

Biggenden Champions, Again

Alan Goodland

The Goodland family from Theodore have won the prestigious Biggenden All Breeds Steer Show and Sale for the second consecutive year after similiar success in 2018. The other time the Goodlands presented cattle at Biggenden in 2016, those steers were named the champion Charolais infused pen. Biggenden Steer Show is judged within breeds first and then the overall champion pen is decided. This year the 1,907 head yarding was judged by Terry Nolan from Nolan Meats. Wide Bay Feedlot bought a solid part of the yarding, in what proved a strong sale. The Goodland’s prize pool included a Leicht’s CIA vet crush. The champion pen of ten 465kg Charolais/Brahman-cross steers went on to sell for 299.2c to return $1392 (Feb 2019), going to Nolan Meats’ Wide Bay Feedlot. Alan Goodland said the well grown steers had been running on leucaena for the past few months. “It’s a great competition to benchmark how our cattle operation is travelling and to see how well our breeding program is working compared to other commercial cattle enterprises,” Mr Goodland said.

34

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

we are highly impressed by the combination of Charolais and Brahman genetics. The cross was the near perfect article, there’s plenty of hybrid vigour to produce what is a tremendous carcase animal. We want to bring softness with the Charolais, but with plenty of power that comes from the Brahman.

The breeding program at Clare is designed to produce oustanding steers. Utilising Charolais and Brahman genetics was producing a near perfect article. “There’s plenty of hybrid vigour to produce what is a tremendous carcase animal,” Mr Goodland said. “We want to bring softness with the Charolais, but with plenty of power that comes from the Brahman.” The judge of the 2018 event, All Breeds Steer Show and Sale judge Lindsay Anderson, Proston said “the grand champion pen of Goodland steers had excellent weight of age, quite temperament and were also a very even line of cattle with great presentation.” These steers sold to 282c/kg to weigh 490kg to return $1382/head (Feb 2018) during the Biggenden sale held after the steer show.

DNA Collection Efficiency

38

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

Previously, once unsealed the vial unit was no longer useful. Today, Allflex and Neogen reseal tissue in the vial for archiving. This enables breed associations to: retest animals as DNA technology advances; resolve suspected errors in animal ID, pedigree or parentage; and confirm DNA when animals are sold or transferred. Maximising efficiency at the Neogen laboratory Neogen Australasia is the regions largest animal genomic testing facility with approximately 40 full-time employees at the Gatton laboratory and a multi-million dollar investment in the sophisticated laboratory space. Samples arrive at the sample reception department and are checked against accompanying test request documentation. Once confirmed and barcoded they undergo the relevant DNA extraction process. Different optimised processes are used depending on the sample type. Hair samples are treated differently from Allflex tissue sample units (TSU’s), as hairs must be processed individually (approx. 25 hair follicles required per test). TSU’s can be processed 12 at a time, in lots of 96. This makes Allflex TSU’s the preferred choice of sample as it is much easier to extract and there is less chance of contamination. For more information on tissue sampling contact Allflex Livestock Intelligence on 1300 138 247, customerservice@ allflex.com.au or visit www.allflex.com.au. For more information the testing process, contact Neogen Australasia 07 3736 2134 or visit www.genomics.neogen. com/au/

Hair DNA samples are considered high-risk in regards to cross-contamination compared with the Tissue Sampling Unit (TSU’s) from Allflex Livestock Intelligence. Parentage verification, genetic selection and BVD screening has never been easier with TSU’s collecting samples in seconds using minimal animal restraint. A singlesqueeze motion collects a sample with minimal distress to the animal. The genetic material is sealed in a specially designed preservative that yields excellent lab results. The TSU applicator is an ergonomic sampling plier, which allows quick loading and sampling, most animals are not aware a sample has been taken. The innovative TSU design was developed by Allflex Livestock Intelligence with input from leading biotechnology companies, livestock genetic testing labs and leading livestock producers. “The science of beef genomics testing is making big advances and so are the companion technologies that enable it,” explains Scott Holt, North American marketing manager at Allflex USA Inc. “By making DNA sampling fast and clean makes it easier for the producer to adopt genomic- assisted selection, management and marketing.” It’s not uncommon for hair samples to be unreliable, cross contaminated or blown around in the dirt and faeces. Whilst they can still be an option for DNA testing, they are not the preferred sampling method by top performing beef producers in Australia. The TSU is fully sealed and positively identified with both a 2D barcode and ID panel. TSU’s can be paired to matching NLIS and visual management tags creating an absolute sample-to-animal linkage. The testing system also now provides for archiving, important to seedstock producers.

With the TSU there is absolutely no chance of the sample being contaminated Greg and Sally Chappell, Shannon Vale Station, NSW.

Charolais Nationals, Worth a Visit The Charolais National events were combined into one, four day Charolais feast back in 2016. This move has given members the opportunity to show, sell and promote youth activities in the one trip. Incorporating all the events into a concise program and more importantly one trip has seen excellent support from breeders. This year with the drought biting hard in many traditional Charolais strongholds we have attracted an excellent line of cattle to promote the breed. Worth your while to visit and inspect. Since the National Charolais Youth Stampede was combined with the Pickles Auctions National Showcase and Allflex National Sale we have seen an average of 79 participants from every state in Australia and a Canadian. Each year the youth program which is educational focused changes up the program to continue increasing participants knowledge. Adults are encouraged to interact with the program. We have had some brilliant lecturers on herd health, career development and many other topics to encourage this. This year Allflex will be demonstrating Tissue Sampling Units (TSU) which is the way forward with DNA testing.

Congress Planning Update The year 2020 is shaping up to be a monumental one for the Charolais breed in Australia. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Australian Charolais and hosting the World Congress will ensure a high profile for the breed. The last time we hosted the World Congress was 1992, so we have had a fair time between drinks. International Charolais breeders have expressed a strong desire to visit our shores. We urge members to get involved in this event as it is unlikely to be hosted by Australia again until the late 2030’s. The United Kingdom have been approved as host for the 2022 World Congress and many other member organisations of International Charolais and Charbray are keen to host the event. With member’s support of events such as a Feature show in Brisbane we can show the world just why Australian Charolais are the preferred European breed here. Naturally the Congress will also attract significant coverage by rural publications and television. The publicity will increase the Charolais profile here in Australia offering a double edged benefit to hosting the World Congress. The organising committee for the Charolais World Congress has focussed on delivering Charolais breeders (both international and domestic) an insight into Australian Charolais and our country. Planning is well underway and fine tuning will see a program that offers visitors a snapshot of Australia and an opportunity to observe the merits of the Australian Charolais type. The Congress has been structured to commence at the Brisbane Royal show on the 5th August and conclude in Sydney on August 15th.

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

Some Regions will be hosting pre and post tours offering visitors an opportunity to extend their visit and see more of the country. Charolais will be the feature breed at Brisbane and it is hoped to have a significant display at this event. With a wide distribution of members across our large land using an event such as Brisbane EKKA offers every member the opportunity to place their breeding program in front of the world. The Congress will take in two days at Brisbane show including the Interbreed. For many European visitors it may be their first exposure to Bos Indicus cattle. Brisbane also has Prime Cattle classes for breeders that prefer not to show and it is hoped Charolais cattle will feature in this display as well. Prime Cattle classes are unled and include single and pen entries in various weight ranges. Any breeder interested in these classes can visit the EKKA website for further details. Early Congress arrivals will have the opportunity to take in the legendary Led Steer judging prior to the official Congress start. To assist breeders to plan their team for Brisbane Ekka in 2020 we have reproduced the Charolais classes and the age splits. These classes are based on the 2019 classes and are subject to change by Brisbane Royal Cattle committee. On the night after judging a dinner is planned to officially celebrate the 50th anniversary of Australian Charolais and we look forward to being the first European breed to achieve this milestone. Significantly as the first European breed to reach this anniversary we are also the dominant European breed based on registration and auction sale, Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

DATE OF BIRTH FOR CLASSES RESTRICTED BY AGE Stated herewith is an explanation regarding classes, which restrict the eligibility of an exhibit by the fact of its age. The dates shown within the parenthesis are those on, or between which, the exhibit must be born to enable it to compete in the class referred to immediately preceding the parenthesis.

CALF CLASSES (HEIFER & BULL) 8 MONTHS AND UNDER 10 MONTHS (1 October 2019 and 30 November 2019) 10 MONTHS AND UNDER 12 MONTHS (1 August 2019 and 30 September 2019) 12 MONTHS AND UNDER 14 MONTHS (1 June 2019 and 31 July 2019)

JUNIOR CLASSES (HEIFER & BULL) 14 MONTHS AND UNDER 16 MONTHS (1 April 2019 and 31 May 2019)

Commencing Saturday after judging the Congress will visit several properties and experience tourism opportunities for several days before heading to Sydney. In Sydney delegates will be able to experience all this global city has to offer. It is planned for the International Charolais Annual General Meeting to be held in Sydney. On the night of the 14th August the Final Dinner will be held and the next host country for the World Congress tradionally presents the outline of their event. The Congress will conclude in Sydney allowing delegates an international departure port. It is anticipated that some international delegates will embark on their own program within Australia or hop over to take in some of New Zealand. It would have been awesome to be able to visit the Great Barrier Reef, Central Australia, and other tourist hotspots but time and distance are limiting factors in touring Australia. The Planning Committee has included many opportunities for local breeders to interact with international delegates within the program. We strongly urge Australian breeders to join and make lasting friendships with like minded individuals. When the programs for both the World Congress and Regional based pre and post tours are completed they will be circulated to the membership. It is anticipated that bookings willl open in February 2020 and extend through March at an early bird pricing. Later bookings may be accepted however may incur slightly higher costs. The Charolais breed has thrived in Australia and our genetics have much to offer to the world. This is a great opportunity to showcase your breeding program to an international and domestic audience. Fortune favours the bold so start planning how you can be involved in presenting Australian Charolais and our way of life to our visitors. World Congresses have fostered the development of lifetime friendships around the world. With the best breed of cattle as a common interest come along and interact, you wont regret the decision. We look forward to releasing a program in the near future and look forward to a successful 2020.

Tools of the trade: Crossbreeding Carefully planned and well managed crossbreeding systems are a tool which have the potential to deliver significant benefits to beef producers. Travel anywhere in regional Australia and you are bound to see numerous herds of crossbred cattle, with many commercial producers taking advantage of the performance “boost” created by mixing two or more purebreds. The main benefits of crossbreeding result from: • Additional performance as a result of hybrid vigour (also known as heterosis). • The ability to combine the benefits of different breeds (also known as breed complementarity). Hybrid Vigour (or Heterosis) Hybrid vigour is the amount by which the performance of the crossbred animals exceed (or differ from) the average performance of the purebred parents that are used in the cross. An example of this for weaning weight is demonstrated in Figure 1.

Charolais x Brahman cross 44

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

This was further illustrated in a crossbreeding research trial undertaken by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries which highlighted the benefits achieved through a structured crossbreeding program for weaning weight. This trial included crosses of Hereford, Angus and Shorthorn cattle in Southern Queensland.

Charolais x Friesian x Hereford

The results of this trial are demonstrated in Figure 2. Compared to the straight bred calves, the F1 crossbred calves showed on average an 8.5% increase in weaning weight per cow mated. While significant, a larger increase of 23.3% was observed is the F2 calves, being those calves bred from F1 cows. The additional “boost” was obtained from maternal heterosis.

The inverse is true with carcase traits. Significant and rapid progress can be made through selection for carcase traits in a breeding program, while crossbreeding has little or no heterosis effect. Growth traits are moderate for both heritability and heterosis, making progress possible through both selection and crossbreeding. The amount of hybrid vigour achieved will depend on the type of crossbreeding or composite system implemented. A composite breeding program is a crossbreeding system that is stabilised (inter-mating the crossbreds). Table 2 lists the types of crossbreeding systems, the levels hybrid vigour (both individual and maternal) retained and estimates of increases in weaning weight per cow mated.

Importantly, heterosis is not just observed for weaning weight but in many economically important beef cattle production traits, especially in traits of “low” heritability such as reproduction and adaptability traits. Table 1 below illustrates the relationship between heritability and heterosis for different categories of beef cattle traits.

Reproduction and maternal traits have low heritability and the traditional response to selection in breeding programs will generally be slower compared to high heritability traits. At the same time however, significant improvement in these traits can be made through programs that maximize heterosis.

Charolais x Angus

To re-iterate, to fully benefit from hybrid vigour the cow herd should also be crossbred to also take advantage of maternal heterosis. Crossbred cows when compared to purebred females will generally have: • increased conception rates • improved calving ease • increased percentage of calves weaned • a longer production life (i.e. longevity)

Charolais x Hereford 45

Tools of the trade: Crossbreeding Breed Complementarity Breed Complementarity results when combining the strong traits of one or more breeds to compensate for the weak traits of another breed.

Crossbreeding Considerations There some considerations that need to be taken into account regarding the implementation of a crossbreeding program.

For example, a British breed female (eg. Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn) mated to a European breed sire (eg. Charolais, Simmental, Limousin) complement each other exceptionally well. In general terms, the British breed female contributes early maturity, easy finishing and calving ease while the European breed sire contributes high growth and muscle.

These include: • Managing and/or sourcing replacement females (depending on crossbreeding system implemented).

Alternatively, a simple cross breeding system could utilise two different British breeds (eg. Shorthorn/Hereford and Angus genetics). This example requires two joining mobs, with the daughters of the Angus sires being joined to the Shorthorn/Hereford sire and vice versa (known as a crisscross mating system). These breeds work in this system as they both have maternal qualities, and are complementary in carcase and maturity patterns. In addition, the system is relatively easy to manage, generates its own replacement females, which in turn provide the benefits from the maternal hybrid vigour that will be expressed.

46

• Crossbreeding programs may require more joining groups than a purebred system. This could be eased by purchasing replacement heifers although locating a source of heifers available on a regular basis with suitable health status and known breeding may be difficult. • Hybrid vigour may result in higher birth weights when sires of a high growth rate breed are joined to heifers of a smaller breed. Selection of suitable genetics is essential to counteract this negative. • Crossbred females may be larger and therefore consume more feed than purebred females. Research has indicated that productivity per hectare still favours the crossbred female.

Selection & Crossbreeding Crossbreeding should not be seen as an excuse for using “low” performing genetics (i.e. bulls) within a breeding program. Regardless of hybrid vigour, the performance of the crossbred herd will depend largely on the genetics of the parent, the management level and the environment that is used. Figure 3 illustrates the benefits of combining selection with crossbreeding. Several tools should be utilised within the beef producer’s tool kit to ensure the “best” genetics are used in the crossbreeding program, including:

BREEDPLAN EBVs BREEDPLAN is a genetic evaluation system for beef cattle breeders offering the potential to accelerate genetic progress in their herds, and to provide objective information on stock they sell to commercial breeders. BREEDPLAN uses the world’s most advanced genetic evaluation system (based on Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology) to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility). Included in the calculation of EBVs are the animal’s own performance, the performance of known relatives, the heritability of each trait and the relationship between the different traits BreedObject Selection Indexes Selection Indexes enable cattle producers to make “balanced” selection decisions, taking into account the relevant growth, carcase & fertility attributes of each animal to identify the animal that is most profitable for their particular commercial enterprise. Selection Indexes reflect both the short term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. Utilising both selection and cross breeding will result in maximum benefit within a breeding program. From the Archives - 1978/ 1979 “the message has stood the test of time and still rings true” Cover: March 1979 Sire Edition

Coat Lezard

AN OUTSTANDING BRITISH CHAROLAIS SIRE Australian Charolais Society members, who attended the XV World Charolais Convention held at Harrogate, Yorkshire in September last were all impressed with the quality and breeding of the cattle which were presented for judging in the Convention Show line-up, and those with whom I have had conversations and correspondence since, all appear in the main to have been most impressed by one particular sire in that field – the bull, which has made this great impression is “Coat Lezard”, which was placed third in the judging lineup on the great day. President Martin Lenthall, who was one of the judging panel at Harrogate was most impressed with this bull, which he saw for the first time at Harrogate and in speaking of “Coat Lezard” he says, “He came to Harrogate in his working clothes – almost directly from the paddock – and took third place in a strong champion bull contest. I think he is the best bull I have ever seen for Australian conditions. He is the nearest approach to what we are looking for in a Charolais sire in this country with height, weight, length, strength and easy care generally. All these qualities are there judging by his progeny.” Martin Lenthall has backed his judgement by being the first Australian breeder to use “Coat Lezard” semen and now has twenty cows and heifers in calf to him. He has another 2,000 straws available for distribution among other interested Australian Charolais breeders, with 2,000 more set aside for use by “Coat Lezard’s” owner, Toby Cobden, farmer and wholesale butcher of Somerset England. In addition, 5,000 straws from this mighty bull – he weighed in at 2,408 lbs. when last weighed in May 1977 – have been sent to Mexico and his fame is spreading. Already some of our other Australian breeders, impressed similarly to Martin Lenthall, while at the Harrogate Show are joining some of their breeders this year with “Coat Lezard” and are excitedly awaiting his first Australian progeny, which all seem to agree will add further lustre to our breed in this Country. 48

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

Ed Note: Coat Lezard has 842 progeny registered in the Charolais Society of Australia Herd Book. One of our younger breeders recently remarked to me regarding this sire, “He didn’t get the first place ribbon at Harrogate, but he certainly impressed me and a number of others I know whom were present.” It will be very interesting to watch the future progress of this sire’s progeny in Australia as he appears to have made such a strong impression on a number of very good judges. An application is pending for “Coat Lezard” to be listed in the Australian Society’s list of licensed A.B. Sires, and will go to the Federal Council for their consideration and approval as soon as the documents are received from his U.K. owners, with all necessary supportive evident of eligibility. By Bruce Richards

NEW COMPUTER RECORDING As from the 1st October 1979 the Society’s Computer recording will be carried out with the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) at the University of New England, Armidale. Meantime all computer processing up to 30th September 1979will continue with the AML & F Co Ltd as in the past. Preliminary steps in the projected changeover are already underway and members will be advised further in this matter, as the actual change-over date draws near. It is not anticipated that there will be any major problems encountered in this move, which is hoped will give our members a wider service than we have been able, so far, to offer. All applications for registrations and transfers should continue to come forward in the normal manner until otherwise advised. Members should also see samples of new forms for O/T etc, displayed elsewhere in this issue. Bruce Richards, Secretary

SOUTH AUSTRALIA SHOWS THE WAY IN 1979 Charolais won four out of five sections in South Australian competition, January 23, 1970.The South Australian Regional Committee, with justified pride in doing so, reported the first major triumph for Charolais in 1979 when they forwarded the results of the South Australian Beef Carcass Competition, the first of the major competitions for this year. This is the impressive performance put up by Charolais in that competition; a performance incidentally unsurpassed in the history of carcass competitions in Australia: State and Reserve Champion in the pen of 3 steers and the yearling classes, plus five minor placings. A total of thirteen awards from a possible twenty-two. Results: Section 1: Milk Teeth Steers (AMLC), John Haigh, Balhannah, 1st and State Champion Section 2: 2 and 4 Teeth Steers (AMLC) Temana Charolais, Bordertown, 1st and Reserve Champion. Yearlings: C.G. Rowe Pty Ltd., Tintinara, 1st and State Champion; John Haigh, Strathalbyn, 2nd and Reserve Champion. Heifer Yearling: I. & J. Nettle, Millicent, 1st The following prices obtained in recent weeks indicate what Charolais can do for the Commercial breeder: Manufacturing Bull $614; Cow $409; Steers $490 and 9 months yearlings $260. Congratulations to all our South Australian members concerned in performing this mighty effort. You have set a high standard for the rest of us to try to follow. (Editor)

CHAROLAIS DOMINATE ADELAIDE ROYAL CARCASS SHOW For the second successive year a Charolais steer took out the major award in the Led Steer Carcass Competition at Adelaide Royal show for 1978. The steer Temana Devon exhibited by Messrs TJ & MK Griffin of Bordertown scored an impressive85 points being one of the 12 entries out of eighty head entered to exceed a score of above 80 points in the judging. This steer took first place in the the competition for the O’Connor Trophy. October 1978.

FROM PHILLIP STREET The proposal to produce this, our first edition of a “Stud and Herd Sires” Annual could possibly not have been made at a more appropriate time as the past twelve months have been aperiod of great progress for the Charolais breed, not only here in Australia but worldwide. On the local scene Charolais have continued to be dominant in Carcass Competitions in most of the major show centres and with the upturn in the beef economy have become highly sought after by both Commercial breeders and the wholesale meat trade. In late 1978 we saw a demand for commercial Charolais bulls never experienced before in this country, a trend which shows signs of continuing and expanding steadily in volume as more commercial men discover the value of having a Charolais sire as a terminal sire. Internationally Charolais have continued to lead the way and created a record by again winning the coverted All Breeds Burke Trophy at the 1978 British Royal Show for the third successive year. Tattenhall Hublot repeated his success of 1977 when he was tamed with Parish Hazel. Bruce Richards, Secretary

Toogoolawah Weaner Sale 2019 The annual Toogoolawah Weaner Sale conducted by Shepherdson and Boyd attracted another great line of weaners from southern Queensland. The predominantly Charolais cross-yarding of 5890 weaners was drawn from across the south east corner, with cattle coming from locations including Maryborough, Nanango, Toogoolawah and Linville. Of the 5890 calves yarded 3,680 were sired by Charolais and another good component were sired by Charbray sires. This sale is renowned for big runs of Charolais type weaners. It really is a must attend sale with pen after pen showing strong Charolais influence and hardly a “Black” animal to be seen. A strong contingent of Victorian buyers helped to drive the sale, which saw steers top at $1020 and heifers top at $830. Some 700 cattle were purchased by Victorian buyers, with other buyers coming from across Queensland with 500 head going to Taroom, 300 to Warwick, 300 to Central Queensland and more than 700 to the Burnett region. Winning the champion pen of steers were Tony and Michele Perrett, Tye, Kilkivan. This pen then sold for $970/head to former Governor General Bill Hayden, Lake Wivenhoe. The Perrett’s also won the best pen of 10 or more steers suitable for export finishing. The Perrett’s sold 195 steers to average $859. Ms Perrett said they use Kilkenny Charolais bulls to sire their Charolais-cross weaners. “We’re very happy with the price they made today,” she said. The Perrett Family also won the Best Pen of Charolais Sired Steers judged by Rodney Freeman. The champion pen of heifers was won by the Brown family, Lyndhurst Station, Anduramba and went on to sell for $740/head to Peter McDonald, Kingaroy. 50

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

This pen of heifers was also the Champion Pen of Charolais sired Heifers. The family cross Brahman cows with Hereford bulls and then cross the resulting females with a Charolais bull. All of the progeny from that cross are then sold as weaners. Trish Carter and Catherine Gaulton, the daughters of the late Ken Brown, were there representing the family. “Our father would be extremely happy with the outcome if he was here, especially in a tough season,” Ms Gaulton said. “The breeding of the cattle was something that he started, with the three-way cross.” Lyndhurst Station sold 270 steers to average $770. Tom Crowley, Buaraba, Esk had the top-priced heifers, fetching $830/head for pen of 10 of his Charbray weaners out of Brahman cross cows by pure Charolais bulls. The pen was bought by Brisbane Valley Protein. Mr Crowley sold 20 steers and 30 heifers on the day. Shepherdson and Boyd agent Vince O’Brien said they were pretty happy with the results of the day. “It has been a tough time in the market,” he said. “There has been some rain but not enough. People aren’t sure what way to go and the first frost will be here soon but I believe it’s probably been the quality that has brought the buyers out.” Manumbar Station won the best pen of eight or more steers. Best pen of 10 or more heifers suitable as replacement breeders was won by Rob and Jenny Grieve, Nanango, the Brown family won the best pen of 10 or more heifers suitable for replacement or domestic trade and the Kelly family, Brisbane, took the best pen of eight or more heifers for replacement or domestic trade for weaners from their Ivory Creek property, managed by Russell Fogg.

Part of Tony and Michele Perrett’s draft including the Champion Pen of Steers. The champion pen sold for $1020 per head topping the sale.

Pen after pen of uniform Charolais sired weaners are a highlight of this sale.

Understanding DNA Technology There are now a range of DNA based technologies available that can be applied within a beef seedstock enterprise, with many more under development. Before making the decision to invest in DNA technologies it makes sense to be informed about the theory of DNA and the current applications available.

52

July 2019 Charolais Magazine

THE THEORY OF DNA What is DNA? Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is an exceptionally important molecule found in the nucleus of all bovine cells. It is often described as the ‘blueprint’ of an organism because it codes the instructions for how that organism will develop, function and appear. In plants and animals, DNA is bundled into chromosomes. Beef cattle have 30 chromosome pairs, each pair including one chromosome inherited from the sire and one from the dam. Because the progeny inherit chromosomes from both parents, the DNA ‘blueprint’ is passed on from one generation to the next.

Animal made of cells

Within each Chromosomes cell nucleus are are made of chromosomes DNA

DNA Structure DNA looks like a long twisted ladder, or double helix. The sides of the ladder are made up of alternating sugar and phosphate molecules. The rungs connect to the sugar molecules and are known as nitrogenous bases. It is the bases which provide the key functionality of DNA and exhibit variation between individuals. There are approximately 3 billion base pairs in bovine DNA. There are four different bases, Adenine (A), Thyamine (T), Gaunine (G) and Cytosine (C). Each rung of DNA is made up of two bases linked together, either G to C or T to A. The sequences of these base pairs make up the ‘message’ of DNA, and differences in sequences provide the basis for variation between individuals.

What is a Gene? A gene is a base pair sequence at a particular location on the chromosome which codes for a specific product. It is estimated there are between 22,000 and 28,000 genes in the beef animals. Genes are separated on chromosomes by areas of ‘non-coding DNA’ for which no function has been identified, but still makeup part of the animal’s genotype. For each gene there may be 2 or more variations, known as alleles, which can result in different phenotypes or observable characteristics. For example one of the genes influencing coat colour has three alleles, the “e” allele for red coat colour, the ED allele for black coat colour and a “Wild type” E+ allele. Which alleles the animal has, and how those alleles interact with each other determines the coat colour of the animal. What is a Gene Marker (or DNA Marker)? A gene or DNA marker is a known, heritable base pair sequence which is associated with a particular gene. The DNA marker sequence does not necessarily have to be part of the gene that codes for the trait but only associated with it, therefore the value of the genetic marker will vary. There are several types of DNA markers, but those most commonly being used in the beef industry are microsatellites, SNPs (pronounced “snips”) and INDELS. What is a Microsatellite? A microsatellite is a repeat of a particular base pair sequence at a specific location in an animal’s DNA, for example CACACACA. The number of base pair repeats differs between animals. Microsatellites form the basis for traditional DNA parent verification, which use multiple microsatellites to determine a calves’ parentage through the exclusion of possible candidates which do not have the same microsatellites. (The Charolais Society progressed from Microsatellite Technology in 2012).

Understanding DNA Technology ...cont from page What is a SNP? Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are markers where there is a difference in a single base pair. For example, in the figure below, the top animal has a “C & G” base pair at the particular location in the DNA, whereas the bottom animal has a “T & A” base pair. While early DNA technology only evaluated an animal’s DNA for a relatively small number of SNPs, SNP chips now routinely evaluate animals at many thousands of individual SNPs. For example, DNA chips with 7,000 (i.e. 7K), 50,000 (ie. 50K) or 800,000 (ie. 800K) SNPs on them are now available. The Charolais GGP-LD (Low Density chip was 20,000 SNP but is now 50,000 SNP’s). Some high influence Charolais sires have been tested at 770,000 SNP’s

CURRENT APPLICATIONS OF DNA TECHNOLOGY There are many potential applications of DNA technology within a beef seedstock enterprise. Some of the most common current applications include: i. Parentage Verification ii. Management of Genetic Conditions iii. Change in Qualitative Traits (e.g. coat colour/polledness) iv. Genetic Improvement in Production Traits v. Assessment of Breed Composition KEY TERMS TRAIT Attribute or characteristic of animals that can be measured and improved genetically (for example, growth rate, fertility, carcass or meat quality) GENOTYPE The full genetic makeup of an animal including dominant and recessive alleles that may not be expressed PHENOTYPE The observable characteristics or traits of an animal that result from the interaction between the animal’s genotype and the environment LOCUS The specific location of a gene or DNA sequence on a chromosome ALLELE One form of a gene or a genetic locus HOMOZYGOUS Animal carries identical alleles for a gene HETEROZYGOUS Animal carries different alleles for a gene

Figure 1: SNP illustration

What is an INDEL? An INDEL is an insertion or deletion of a particular base pair sequence at a specific location in an animal’s DNA. Indels are often associated with recessive genetic conditions What is a Genomic Prediction Equation? As each production trait is influenced by many genes, inferring genetic merit for a particular trait requires the accumulated effects of many markers. Genomic Prediction Equations take the genotype of an animal as collected using dense SNP chips (e.g. 50,000 SNPs), to estimate the animal’s breeding value based on the known effect of each SNP on the trait of interest.

DOMINANT An allele is dominant over another so that the phenotype of the dominant allele is always expressed over the recessive allele RECESSIVE An allele is recessive, so that the phenotype is only expressed when two copies of the allele are present (i.e. it is homozygous). CARRIER Animal which is heterozygous and ‘carries’ a recessive allele which is not being expressed phenotypically
