Charolais EXPRESS July 2018
The Nationals, A Celebration of Australian Charolais
Caity Cox, CCJ’s Charolais, Willowbank Qld was the recipient of the 2018 Garrett Youth Scholarship. Caity is seen with her certificate, Scholarship of $2,000 to assist with her tertiary education and President Brendan Scheiwe at the National Dinner.
The National Charolais events held in Dubbo in mid July were a tremendous success taking seasonal conditions into account. Quality was right on target with a reduced number of cattle on display reflecting the season. Ninety five head paraded in the Pickles Auctions National Showcase, 18 steers contested the Clipex Silver Calf championship and 80 youth participated in the National Youth Stampede. Over 160 members and friends attended the annual dinner where an auction including feature lot Colinta Minnie (P) raised $12,660 to develop our Charolais Youth. The outcomes of an extended youth program can only have benefits for our society and industry. Finally the appreciation of every attendee and Charolais Society member should be directed toward our awesome sponsors. Our major sponsors, Allflex, Pickles Auctions, Fairfax Agricultural Media and Clipex, plus our other sponsors and contributing members have enabled the four events to run at the level one wants their national to project. A sincere thank you to each and every sponsor for their contribution. To all exhibitors of cattle, thank you, to Deearn and Hayley processing behind the scenes and the committee, great job on another breed success story, lets look forward to 2019 and bigger and better events. regards Colin, Breed Development Manager

National Youth Stampede 2018 Eighty young beef enthusiasts were treated to an educational Youth Stampede at Dubbo during the Nationals. With competitors from across the nation it truly was a national event. The committee ran a program highly orientated to education within the cattle industry as well as highlighting opportunities to enter the industry in the future. Coupled with the physical side of caring and exhibiting their animal the program again produced a successful outcome. This year the format changed and our Stampede competitors were able to participate in the Pickles Auctions National Showcase and Allflex National Sale with the Paraders Classes the final event. This format change allowed a new marketing section to be included for the Intermediate and Senior entrants. These competitors were given assignments relating to cattle in the National Sale. The senior section were asked to be consultants and recommend within a budget sale lots for a breeder to establish a stud and outline the basis of their selection. This assignment was outside their other activities introducing more time management processes into the program.
The Society extends a vote of appreciation to Nicole Nicholls and Nattel Kemph for their workload in formatting the Stampede educational program. Kristie O’Brien again provided new team bonding challenges for the first night and these were enjoyed by participants and spectators alike. A relay between senior entrants and five parents (who will remain anon.) was extremely interesting with the parents just scrapping in. The Society also extends their appreciation to the educational session leaders for their time commitment. We try and alter the program each year aside from the basics of cattle handling and the educational program delivered in the constraints of time was first class. Parents and friends are welcome to attend the sessions and many took the opportunity. This year Greg and Leonie Ball capably undertook the judging of the Herdsman awards and James McWilliam and Hannah Powe judged Paraders and Junior Judging respectively. Both James and Hannah have come through similar programs and it is pleasing to see their contribution back to our junior programs.

Showcase
Charolais Society of Australia Ltd
2018 Seasonal conditions may have reduced overall numbers but the quality at the 2018 Pickles Auctions National Showcase was outstanding. The Judge Mr Tim Vincent, Booragul Angus, Piallaway had a great line of classes to work through and select his champions. Junior champion female was Temana Nola N8E (P) exhibited by Terry and Maylene Griffin, “The Ridges”, Baradine. This heifer was sired by Minnie-Vale Jack Sprat and exhibited lovely volume and presence for a young heifer. Reserve junior champion female was Waterford Northern Star N41 (P) exhibited by Waterford Charolais, Mount Macedon, Vic. One of the youngest heifers at the event this well grown heifer was sired by Moongool Just A Gigolo J281E. Both these heifers sold for $6,500 in the Allflex National Sale. Other junior heifer class winners included Winchester, Chenu and Temana. Intermediate champion female, Chenu Confidence 7 (AI) (ET) (P) was exhibited by Rebecca Keeley and Colin Pickering, Chenu Charolais, Bridgewater, Victoria. This heifer was sired by growth and milk trait leader LHD Cigar E46. Earlier in the year Moongool Network was Calf Champion Male at Beef Australia 2018. Bolong and Colinta won the other two junior bull classes.
