President’s Message Chris Knox, CSA President
It is with much pleasure I present my first President’s report and thank my fellow councillors for the opportunity to chair the Council into a promising period for the Charolais breed. Firstly, on behalf of the Council and all Charolais members, I must sincerely thank and congratulate Keith Glasson for his three years as president. His leadership and dedication to the breed during this time was second to none and during a period which has not been easy for the breed with dry conditions and low prices seeing a decline in both bull sale numbers and prices. I am pleased to welcome Colin to the head of Charolais management in the new role as Breed Development Manager. The Council looks forward to this new approach to increase our market share by proving the Charolais Advantage to all sectors of the Australian beef industry.
6 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
The Council is looking forward to the future and feels sure with the vast experience Colin brings from all sectors of the industry this will put the Charolais breed in good stead to move forward by meeting market requirements that will increase our market share. I personally believe the Charolais breed has a big role to play in the future of the beef industry in Australia. Beef producers in Australia are set to have a big increase in profitability with world demand at an all-time high. With this demand, favourable weather conditions and the low dollar, we will see a considerable increase in prices for all grades of beef. Weaner sales recently have seen Charolais blood weaners bring well in excess of $1000 and heavy cull cows bringing in excess of $1600. These prices and many others are new territory for Australian beef producers.
Charolais seed stock producers need to embrace all technologies available while maintaining market suitability to produce the modern beef animal to improve our standing in the Australian beef herd. We know the Charolais breed excels in the show ring, carcase competitions, feed trials of both grass and grain but the ever increasing demand from the feedlot sector is pleasing. This is due to high performance, high yields and carcase quality the Charolais breed is becoming renowned for. As Charolais seed stock producers, we need to support any Charolais promotion undertaken because as a strong breed together, individuals can benefit. I thank those members who have contributed to this publication and wish for better seasons for all members.

From the Office Colin Rex, Breed Development Manager Personally it is a great time to reconnect with the Charolais breed in the new role of Breed Development Manager. I grew up on a family farm in the lower south east of South Australia where unfortunately sheep seemed to have priority. From a very early age my tendency was to towards our cattle herd and this has continued through my life. From 1983 to 2001 I was fortunate to manage large cattle studs of Simmental, Limousin, Angus, Hereford and Charolais in New South Wales and South Australia. I have had the opportunity to judge at Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong and Sydney Royal shows as well as numerous country shows. In my youth I had the benefit of excellent mentors and I endeavour to contribute to industry youth programs where possible.
Since cattle first landed on the Australian shore there has been many breeds introduced with varying degrees of success. The Charolais has only had a small window in that timeline and has established itself successfully as the number one European breed based on registration data. Charolais cattle are performing in the most diverse environments across this country and breeders should be proud of their contribution to the Australian beef industry. The Australian Charolais industry commenced in January 1970 with the birth of the first Charolais cross calf in Western Australia. Over the next 45 years our members have sourced the best available genetics worldwide and tested them in some of the harshest cattle breeding environments in the world to produce what we see today as the modern Australian Charolais. Our breed has stayed true to its heritage and the attributes that attracted progressive cattle breeders to Charolais in the 1960’s and 1970’s are still evident in our modern Charolais. Along this journey the Charolais family has developed. Joan Vickers in her book “Charolais in Australia” summed up the cohesion of the membership “While the focus of any breed society must be the cattle, the cement that makes the society a living vibrant organisation is the people who belong to it. No one who has been associated with the Charolais Society since inception can deny that it is a dynamic organisation that has bought immense satisfaction to many people.”
In 2002 I returned to the classroom at Marcus Oldham College to further my education and upon completion gained employment with the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) at Armidale. For the last twelve years I have been involved in managing various breed societies in this role and this has provided a great understanding of society administration and breed promotion.
“
Working with the Charolais breed again is a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to working closely with all segments of the industry to promote the advantages of “Crossing into Profit” with Charolais.
This year as we celebrate the Australian Beef Industry at Beef Australia the Charolais breed will be well represented across the various competitions and trade sites. I encourage all readers to visit our members at their sites or visit exhibitors in the cattle stalls and inspect the quality of cattle on display.

“If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together” African proverb
Beef Australia is truly a spectacle that every cattle breeder needs to see at least once in their lifetime. The pens of trade cattle at Gracemere are a visual feast and many pens highlight the advantages that heterosis can offer the beef industry. As Charolais breeders we know firsthand the growth advantage that our sires can offer to a breeding program. It has also been great to hear commercial cattle breeders acknowledge the increase in value of their heifer drop when using Charolais sires. This year has been one of mixed emotions with many areas in the north still deficient in rainfall. In western and southern regions we have seen some great headlines involving Charolais genetics. Charolais cross weaners set what is believed to be a new Australian price record for genuine 9-10 month old weaners at the Wodonga premier weaner sales on Thursday January 15th. The Cook family from Rangan Charolais saw their Charolais/ Angus cross steer weaners make $1105 weighing in at an impressive 442kg.
ADVANCE ROMA BULL SALE Saturday 22nd August 2015
Also at Wodonga Matt and Ann-Marie Collins, Kenmere topped the Wodonga Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale on January 16 with a pen of 11 Charolais steers, aged under 14 months, averaging 554kg and selling for the equal top of $1180, or 212c/kg. The top prices are not just centered on Wodonga, across the southern weaner sales we have seen Charolais cross calves being sought after for their weight gain and muscularity. Another good news story recently is the salvage value of cast for age females with Charolais genetics. In March, Elders Boyanup reported a Charolais cow at $1,950; Victorian breeders have reported salvage sales at $1,780. Salvage value contributes to the enterprise gross margin and sales like these assist in making a beef enterprise profitable. As I write this report the autumn bull selling season is slowing down with only a few sales still to go. Bulls have topped at $21,000 in Western Australia when Liberty sold their sire Liberty Jack Frost J38 for $21,000 to Wellard Agri, Dongara WA. Averages and clearances have been solid and members should be commended for presenting quality bulls for the commercial industry to select from. The Charolais breed has many positive attributes to contribute to a successful commercial cattle enterprise and we invite your enquiry about the breed. There is a membership directory in this publication and also membership lists on our website www.charolais.com.au The member search on the website can be set with your own criteria to shortlist breeders to contact. The office is always willing to assist and if there is anything we can do please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards, Colin

Cream of the Crop By Colin Rex
The ability of Charolais to complement British breeds and produce the highly valued silver calves is being well documented at Warramong, a 364 hectare property located just south of Tarcutta in the Riverina area of New South Wales. David McDonald, a well-known Red Angus breeder through his highly decorated Trevone Park Stud is incorporating Charolais genetics into his commercial enterprise with great success. David and late wife Pam started their Red Angus stud at Camden on the Sydney fringe back in 1996 and quickly established a quality herd. David purchased the Warramong property in 2003 and after he dispersed the “Trevone Park” registered herd in 2009 has built up the commercial enterprise on the property. The Camden property was sold with David moving full time to the Tarcutta property in 2013. Trevone Park was the home of some of the Red Angus great female families and so it is no surprise David harnesses the maternal strength of the Red Angus into his breeding program. The current herd consists of 160 calving females plus heifers. David is aiming to increase to 200 calving females and replacements. David’s son Paul assists with labour on the farm and runs his own herd of beef breeders on a section of the property as well as working off farm. Paul undertakes all the mowing and raking of their hay production with a contract baler used to produce hay for their fodder needs with the surplus marketed. The property supports 25 hectares of lucerne on the Keajura Creek flats with cereal and pasture hay also baled. 10 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
Tarcutta is half way between Melbourne and Sydney and enjoys a 660mm annual rainfall normally. Warramong is undulating with a range of soils types from the heavy creek flats to loam type soils to the back of the property. The property is on both sides of the roadway and is well serviced by excellent fencing, laneways and functional cattle yards. David purchased a line of Charolais Red Angus cross cows in 2009 and these females along with some commercial Red Angus females have formed the basis of the breeding program. Some of the original purchases are still in the herd and as mature females they exhibit great volume and capacity. David has been very happy with the production of these females and the cross is now the basis of his breeding program. David appreciates the growth and muscle of the Charolais and believes it complements the strong maternal traits and softness of the Red Angus. David’s goal is to build up a herd of crossbred females with the desired cream coat colour and then cross these to a Charolais sire with the progeny mainly terminal. David is aiming to retain 20 heifers each year. All heifers are joined to calve to the Red Angus sire with all pure Red Angus heifers retained to enter the herd. The goal is to retain a nucleus Red Angus herd of 30 to 35 females to maintain the level of maternal traits contributed to the crossbred herd. After the first calf, females are joined to Charolais sires with David believing that his retained breeders need to have 50% genetic influence of both breeds. Mature Red Angus females are also joined to the Charolais sires.
The best of the crossbred silver heifers are retained to assist in building numbers in the commercial herd to the desired number. David and Paul appreciate the poll gene contributed by the Red Angus and the muscle pattern and growth contributed by the Charolais. David strongly believes that introducing the poll gene through the Red Angus will be of benefit when the beef industry is targeted like the sheep industry has been in regard to management practices. Currently the sire battery consists of three Charolais sires and one Red Angus. The Charolais sires are heavy muscled early maturing types with David reporting that calving has not been an issue with the breeding program. When selecting Charolais sires David prefers red factor sires exhibiting early maturity, strong muscle and docile temperament.
Above & right: High quality Charolais Red Angus cross heifers at Warramong.
Calving is split at Warramong with a March and July calving which assists in spreading cash flow when marketing. Calves are marketed mainly through Moss Vale where the line is drafted to suit local small butchers. David prefers to send the entire drop at the same time with the autumn drop aimed to be sold prior to Christmas and the winter drop calves targeted for April sale. Due to the feed availability last year David retained his 2014 autumn calves for an extra month to take advantage of the weight gaining ability of his calves. David aims for an average of 350kg weaned and reported the tops can wean off at over 400kg. If the opportunity arises some calves may be marketed directly. David is prepared to be flexible with marketing options to achieve the best price for his calves. cont page 12....

The Warramong heifers are extremely even in type and style.
Cream of the Crop The herd is vaccinated for 7in1, pinkeye and Pestivirus. All calving females are treated with Scourshield at 9 and 2 weeks prior to calving. Sires are also treated for Vibrio. The pastures on Warramong are high quality with a mix of ryegrass, broomes, native grasses and clovers. David and Paul utilise the advice of a local agronomist and apply 40 tonne of super per year. Clover and grass seed is spread with the super. The goal is by improving pasture and applying the super the carrying capacity will be increased to support the growing herd.

cont from page 11.... Some 5,000 trees have been planted in tree lines since purchasing the property and the McDonald’s have had a good success rate. The tree planting program has been in conjunction with the local Murrumbidgee Catchments Authority. A small area of pasture has been affected by salinity and working with the local agronomist, the McDonalds have established salt tolerant pasture including tall wheatgrass and revitalised the paddock. David is full of praise of the success of the tall wheatgrass.

Inspecting the herd, the goal of achieving lines of poll cream coloured Charolais Red Angus females is well underway. From the calves at foot through yearling heifers and mature females you have to be impressed with the tremendous depth and length of body combined with the feminine shape of the females. The crossbred heifers are so consistent it is hard to believe that they are by different sires. David is succeeding in increasing the desired cream female without sacrificing the traits such as milk and muscle that he appreciates in his breeding goals.

Charolais World Congress 2014 By Terence Farrell
Approximately 80 International visitors attended the Charolais World Congress in France last year. Twenty one Australians participated on the 14 day tour through some of the most scenic cattle country in Europe. The majority of the commercial Charolais cattle in France are purebred. Commercial bulls are grown out to 9-10 months and heifers are retained to 18 months prior to slaughter. The bull meat market is mostly focused on southern France and Italy while the heifer meat market is predominantly French domestic retail and food service. Older cows and bulls go into the processed meat trade as they do in most countries. France is breeding more polled cattle; however, the majority of Charolais are still horned. There is a concerted effort to breed polled Charolais as most stud markets in Europe are moving toward polled cattle. The French bulls are still large and powerful but more attention is being paid to calving ease and birth weight. Most of Europe does not like or want fat beef and therefore little attention is paid to fat traits in breeding programs. Milk is an important trait in the market (milk as defined by weaning weight minus birth weight) and is highly desired to get early weight into commercial bulls.
14 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
Farm Visits Farm visits were among the highlights of the congress and the farms and animals were presented extremely well. The first visit was to Earl Colmont at Saincaize where we saw a very good herd of young polled males and females. The farm generally sells one or two bulls per year to bull test stations in Magny Cours or Creuzier le Neuf. Their average selling price for stud bulls was 2700 Euros, stud females was up to 2000 Euros and store commercial cattle were selling for 1000 Euros. The next farm visit was to the Gaec Beauzon farm at Preporche which ran 160 cows on 184 hectares. Franco and Jean-Paul Beauzon have been on the farm since 1982. The Beauzon brothers ran an AI program and have started an embryo program on their 2011 Eurovision winning female. Last year they sold 130 commercial cattle using the new electronic auction system (SICAFOME) which is similar to Auctions Plus but with registered terminals in bidding centres throughout the country. The average price was 1230 Euros.
An alternative selling system was operating where animals were tied to a string line and the buyers directly negotiated with the vendor. Some auction houses have bidding rooms in locations throughout the country where buyers can go to bid on auctions.
Gaec Gauthe hosted the next farm visit. The farm was located at Isenay and ran 350 registered Charolais on 553 hectares. The farm buys in 450 tonnes of bedding straw and produces lucerne hay on 20 hectares for feed over winter. They aim for a cow weight of 880 to 950 kgs and focus heavily on structural conformation. Six new bulls were purchased each year for AI and 20 bulls were used for natural service. Approximately 80 heifers were retained for the stud herd and embryos were extracted from the top cows each year. Gaec Gauthe sold 25 stud males and females into Czech Republic, Belgium, Hungary and other European countries and competed at Paris, Moulins, Charolles and other European shows. Their bull “Venus was a 2008 winner at the Moulins sur Allier, National Show. The Scea Pichard Hughues farm at Montceau les Mines exhibited a range of very well structured cattle. The farm was on 187 hectares. Participants of on the tour were impressed by the breeding females and the young progeny. Progeny from their sires Freejus, Dors Bien and Homard, were shown in the field. The farm replaces 60 stud heifers per year from 180 cows. Approximately 30 bulls were retained. Sixty bulls and 30 heifers went into a commercial operation and were sold at about 500 kgs live weight. A bull that drew attention was Dors Bien (Fr7121659737) which was being promoted for its calving ease with heifers and its good muscle structure. It is a long bull with good depth in the chest and width in the hind quarter. Saleyard visit In France the commercial cattle selling system is electronic. Cattle lots are bought into a selling ring and weight is recorded for the pen and the average weight for an animal is posted to a screen. Buyers then bid as a clock is rundown. The last bid when the clock runs down then purchases the animals.
Abattoir visit In addition to auctions and direct negotiation, cattle could also be sold directly to slaughter plants. One plant that was visited by the congress was the SICABA plant. It was a cooperative and members sold their cattle in advance through the plant. There were regulations on the region from which the cattle could be sourced and the specifications were tightly controlled for animal age and sex. Carcases are graded using the European standard Europ grading system which is based predominantly on conformation and muscle yield. Beef would be hung for four days of aging before being broken down and packaged for the final market. The SICABA plant had its own beef brand for Charolais from the Bourbonnais region. It also sold Charolais beef into its premium red label brand to the food service market. Breeding centre During the congress the participants visited the AI centre in Fontaine. Sires were selected to go into the breeding centres and semen was collected over a six month period. The French herd book (Breed Society) lists the top 20 AI sires for each year and Dors Bien is the top sire for calving ease, Faiducajec is top for growth, Eruditajec is top for muscle and Epsion and Faiducajec are equal top for frame score. A copy of the list is available for members who are interested in the results. National show The French National Charolais Show was held during the congress at Magny Cours. There were over 300 cattle exhibits on display in the barns and during the show. It was a great opportunity to see a wide range of Charolais cattle from the various parts of France. International congress participants were invited to judge the senior male and females for an International award which was an interesting exercise. Judges from the various countries were placing emphasis on different parts of the animals but at the end of the day leg structure, backline and feet were predominantly the most important features. cont page 16....
15
Charolais World Congress 2014 cont from page 15 The French judges used different scoring to the international judges with butt width, eye muscle area and shoulder shape and chest depth featuring as very important. Skin elasticity was also a desirable feature along with silky hair. It was interesting to international observers that horn symmetry or hind leg angle was not regarded as very important in the judges’ selections. We were informed that the judges looked at overall flexibility while walking rather than leg angle when making their decision. Milking ability of the cow was a strong determinant of the wining female class. After the show we were treated to a fabulous dinner in celebration of the 150 years for the French Herd Book. The food was terrific and the wines selected were great.
Historical documents and photographs of the Charolais breed were made available for the visitors to see the changes in the animals over time. Technical day on feed efficiency One morning of the congress was devoted to presentations of research results on feed efficiency. The results were primarily associated with the benefits and costs of feeding supplements at different ages to cows and progeny. Much of the research was related to the French production system. There was some good research done on foetal development and the effect of feeding on the ability of animals to convert cells into fat or protein later in life.
Research was also shown for the optimal cow weight and fat at calving but again this research was focused on French pastures. Annual General Meeting of the International Charolais Association
Helge By, from Canada was voted in as the 2014/2015 Charolais World President. The delegates discussed collaboration on genomic data sharing and decided to send a delegate to the International Genomics Conference in the UK in November 2014. The next Charolais World Congress will be held in Mexico in 2016. When details become available of the 2016 World Congress in Mexico they will be placed on the Society website.

Sydney Royal 2015 Judge: Mr Stephen Hayward, Allora Qld Judging of the Charolais ring at the 2015 Royal Sydney show was capably undertaken by Mr Stephen Hayward, Advance Charolais, Allora Queensland. Stephen is well known in the industry as principal of both Advance Charolais and Advance Fitting Services.
Sired by TR Red Smoke the judge commented “the bull was an excellent display of the Charolais breed. He’s got plenty of spring of rib, he’s got a lovely skin and hair type to him, he’s got good testicles and a good balance of bone and muscle,” he said.
We welcomed three Society Life Members to ringside with Alex McLachlan, David Bondfield and Gary Noller in the spectator gallery.
The reserve junior champion bull was exhibited by Greg and Jenny Frizell of Wakefield stud, Armidale. Wakefield Jack Flash was sired by Rangan Park Redemption E42 and weighed in at 814kg at 16 months.
The best exhibit in the Charolais ring at the Sydney Royal was exhibited by DSK Charolais principals Chris Knox and Helen Alexander, Coonabarabran. Their junior and grand champion bull, DSK RSMK Just Smokin J6E was a 19-month-old sire weighing 872 kilograms, scans of 13/9cm with an eye muscle area of 135 square centimetres.

The McConnaughty Family from Elstow, Baradine had two class winners in the junior championship row as did DSK Charolais. Rosedale Charolais, Blayney NSW won the first junior bull class in the ring. Interesting all six bulls contesting the junior championship were poll. Senior champion bull was Elite Jackal exhibited by Glen Waldron from Meandarra Qld. Parading at exactly 1,000kg aged 21 months this bull had the highest daily weight gain of all senior sires on display. The judge commented on his easy doing nature and softness. Reserve senior champion was McLachlan Groups Airlie Horus. Kevin and Robin Yost won the other senior bull class with their Liberty Just Ramblin Along.
The senior and grand champion cow, Crathes Estella 32, was another exhibit from the Waldron’s herd. The 27-month-old cow had a two and a half month old heifer calf at foot, and was purchased by the Waldron’s at the Charolais National sale in 2014 from Keith and Roz Glasson, Crathes Charolais, Greenmount. The cow’s dam had previously been an interbreed champion at Sydney Royal, Brisbane Royal and the Rockhampton Beef Expo, while the exhibit itself was a reserve junior Charolais heifer at the Brisbane Royal last year. The judge commented on the grand champion females’ structural correctness, smoothness of shoulder, and very good teat size. Mr Hayward said ”in my opinion the grand champion female was the complete package of the Charolais females parading on the day”. The reserve senior champion cow Airlie Katrina G751E paraded with a calf that had impressed the judges in the All Breeds Calf show earlier in the Easter show. The other two class winners in the senior female section were exhibited by Bolong and Kenmere studs.

DSK won all three groups classes at the show. Progeny of their donor female Nandillyan A57E won the progeny class and their two class winning junior bulls teamed to win the pair of bulls. To cap off a great show the DSK breeders group won the final class on offer. In the Interbreed competitions the Charolais champions all made the final selections and received positive feedback from the officiating judges. These cattle were great ambassadors for the breed in the highly prestigious Sydney Interbreed competitions.
In the steer competition Chris Knox and Helen Alexander paraded DSK Encore K24E (pictured above) to win the Reserve Middlewight Steer on the Hoof.

Gaining kilograms to gain profit By Caitlyn Burling, Farm Weekly Editorial and images courtesy of Farm Weekly.
But the Dairy Shorthorn has been an important cornerstone of Les and Sharon Prosser’s cattle herd for a couple of decades now, ever since they shifted their focus from dairy production to beef. It’s a strong breeding belief that has flowed through to their son Tim and new daughter-in-law Zoe, who are keen to continue with the Angus-Dairy Shorthorn combination as a very productive base to work from.
“
To complete the package, they discovered Charolais bulls are the best breed to use for infusing hybrid vigour into their progeny, producing beautiful calves with increased weight and muscling. Tim believes the multi-layered breed combination ensures they are getting the best characteristics from each, with the Dairy Shorthorn a link to the Prosser’s dairy farming past that provides a smaller, compact package with excellent milk traits. The Angus element then adds a solid breeding base with its all-round favourable traits and commercial appeal, while they believe the Charolais is the quietest of the European breeds and throws calves with large frames and increased muscling.
The Prossers currently run 400 breeders, one for each of the 400 hectares of grazing country on their 850ha Scott River property, the rest of which is covered with 350ha of bush and 100ha of blue gums. While the Angus-Dairy Shorthorn females have been a constant element since the late 1970s, their breed of bull has evolved through trial and error. Initially they were using Hereford bulls, then Beefmakers (SimmentalHereford) as their terminal sire, until they decided to switch entirely to Simmentals in the 1980s. All of their cattle work is done on foot and with the help of horses, so after one too many afternoons chasing Simmental sires around the paddocks, Les and Tim decided it was time to look at other breeds.
Using Charolais bulls has probably bumped our average weight up by 20 kilograms. So essentially, it’s the same cows producing calves that are putting on those extra few kilos in the same conditions. There’s your profit.
A passion for cattle has been passed onto Zoe (left) and Tim Prosser from Tim’s father Les, who established the Prosser family’s breeding base of Angus-Dairy Shorthorn females in the 1970s. The family has spent the last 10 years using Charolais bulls as their terminal sire. 22 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
“
Like the uncleared Scott River farm they purchased in the late 1960s, the Prosser family is determined to carve out their own unique path with their cattle herd. There are not too many cattle producers in WA who could say they use a first cross Angus-Dairy Shorthorn mother, and most would struggle to even recognise the littleknown breed.
So nine years ago they trialled the Charolais for their extra size and good temperament and were immediately impressed with the results. “We wanted to get more weight and meat into the calves,” Tim said. “We’ve certainly achieved that with the Charolais and have no more calving problems. “The extra weight is impressive, there’s not a lot of difference in weight between the heifer and steer calves. “Using Charolais bulls has probably bumped our average weight up by 20 kilograms. “So essentially, it’s the same cows producing calves that are putting on those extra few kilos in the same conditions. “There’s your profit.” The Charolais bulls are joined with the Angus-Dairy Shorthorn females for a 12-week mating from the first day of June, as were the Angus bulls with two mobs of Dairy-Shorthorn females to replace their main first cross breeding herd.
Establishing lines of pure Dairy Shorthorns has become more difficult in the past decade due to a shrinking number of breeders in Australia, so the Prossers have had to purchase semen from overseas and artificially inseminate. Joining has been brought forward by a month, as the Prossers previously worked on mating on July 1 for 12 weeks, but found they could utilise their abundance of grasses and pastures just as effectively once the calves began to drop in March. The late season in the Augusta region allows Les and Tim to sell their calves later, usually turning off their top lines of 10-month-old calves at 360kg liveweight in January for Woolworths. They are all grassfed and weaned straight off their mothers, while the rest of the calves that don’t make the grade are sold on farm throughout January, usually destined for a feedlot.
Elstow Kickstart (P) 1st in class 12/14 mths & Elstow Jim Beam (P) R/F 1st in class 18/19 mths at 2015 Sydney Royal Show.
Before selling occurs, Les and Tim will have already gone through their breeding herd and the young calves and heavily culled those that don’t meet the requirements, culling for temperament, feet and most importantly, milk traits. However, the genetic combination of the three breeds has had a positive effect in achieving their desired traits and Les said they sometimes kept a few ‘homemade’ bulls that are Charolais-Angus-Dairy Shorthorn. But for the most part, they purchase bulls from Downunder, Bardoo and Elgin Park Charolais studs for their herd’s genetic development, as Les believes in selecting bulls that are well suited to their southern conditions. Cattle have been an intrinsic part of the family’s farming operation from the very beginning and considering the current season and prices, together with Les and Tim’s obvious passion, they will be roaming the Prosser’s paddocks for many years to come.

Cattleyards to Canberra “Developing life skills”
For many years the Charolais Society has offered youth member’s scholarships and learning opportunities through the Charolais Youth Muster’s (Youth Events). Many of our Charolais youth have continued in the rural industry with considerable success. The goal of the youth activities is to offer our younger members not only cattle handling skills but skills that will enhance their careers in their future life in any field.
Charolais Youth
Kathleen’s bovine interest started when her grandparents gave the Ferme siblings some Illawarra poddy calves to rear which were sold to purchase the stud heifer Beerenberg Kirsten in 1987. Kirsten along with two other heifers was the basis of the Ferme family’s stud, Gum View Charolais, located at Crystal Brook in the mid north of South Australia. Kathleen spent her childhood through to young adult life showing Charolais for the family and across Australia. When Kathleen moved to Western Australia in 2001 to study veterinary science she started working with Liberty Charolais who assisted Kathleen to establish her own stud, Coolabah. Kathleen noted “my passion for Charolais will be something that continues throughout my life despite currently not being active in the breed.”
Kathleen’s first youth event was the South Australian Junior Heifer Expo when she was eleven and she continued to be involved in the expo as a committee member, speaker Tom and Kathleen Giles (nee Ferme) with her first Coolabah or leader over the years. sale bull at the European Bull Sale, Naracoorte. Kathleen commented that Kathleen was also awarded the Societies “being able to meet more people and “Garrett Youth Education Scholarship” expand my skills and experience gave twice. “The Garrett Youth Education me confidence to chase my goals”. Whilst Scholarship provided me with financial living in Western Australia Kathleen was assistance to complete my veterinary part of the team to establish the Western studies and I was grateful for the Australian Youth Handlers Camp which opportunity to meet with Mrs Caroline continues to grow strongly. 24 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
Kathleen completed a three month Beef Cattle study tour of North America, (a part of the South Australia Junior Heifer Expo Herdsman Award), which sparked an interest to work globally. Two years in a mixed practice, predominantly dairy and small animals in Warrnambool, Western Victoria grounded Kathleen’s skills in dairy medicine, production and nutrition. In 2007 Kathleen returned to South Australia to work in the Clare Valley in mixed practice, taking responsibility for the production animal sector of the business. Working with producers to build their business was something Kathleen found very rewarding and she found herself setting management plans and then working on regional animal health programs. Aiming to make a difference to rural practice Kathleen became the President for the South Australian Rural Veterinarians and became involved with the Australian Veterinary Association as well as commencing additional study in ruminant nutrition. The year 2011 was a year of complete change for Kathleen’s career, it was unexpected but she was grateful for the challenges and opportunities afforded to her. Kathleen’s (now) husband was offered a great career opportunity in grains research in Canberra. Making the move with him Kathleen secured a role in animal health and welfare policy development with Sheepmeat Council of Australia. Signing her contract the Friday before the Live Export footage was aired on Four Corners Kathleen spent the next three years working on Live Exports, Johne’s disease and welfare standards for sheep on farms. This role progressed into Kathleen’s appointment as CEO of Sheepmeat Council of Australia in January 2014.
Kathleen out in the field in her role as Sheepmeat Council Chief Executive Officer.
Kathleen reported the “Sheepmeat Council of Australia represents producer’s interests on a range of issues to government, service delivery companies and international trading partners. The organisation works with a broad array of organisations throughout agriculture and the sheepmeat supply chain to increase the profitability of the sheep industry”. “My role as the CEO is diverse including working to a Board of producers to set the strategic priorities and policy for the sheep industry to focus lobbying, research, food safety programs, animal health welfare, biosecurity programs and trade priorities; overseeing the investment of the sheep transaction levy expenditure by Meat & Livestock Australia, National Residue Survey (food safety and residue), Animal Health Australia & the Sheep CRC”. “The role has provided me with an amazing opportunity over the past 14 months. I have always had a goal to help farmers to get the best out of their business, being able to influence at the highest level on behalf of producers is something I never seen myself doing, but thoroughly enjoy. From lobbying politicians on a regular basis, representing sheep producers in international markets and free trade agreement negotiations to setting the strategic direction for the sheep industry there is definitely never a dull moment”.
Kathleen reflecting on her days in youth events that have assisted her career said “it isn’t the things I thought it would have been (showing, clipping etc). Building a network of people in the industry that I am passionate about has certainly been the greatest assistance for me”. “Having contacts, mentors and people to aspire to have driven me to achieve my goals. Youth events gave me confidence, public speaking skills, interpersonal skills and importantly an understanding of the cattle industry beyond the show ring”. “One of the most influential skills that youth events provided me was an understanding of meetings, structures, organisations and working with people. When I took on a committee role with the SA Junior Heifer Expo or SA Charolais Youth Group I never realised that the skills I would learn would help me later in life when I decided to be part of a state or national committee or become a Chief Executive Officer”. The Charolais Society is very proud of the success that Kathleen has achieved and to hear that skills developed through our youth programs have been beneficial is extremely rewarding. We congratulate Kathleen on her career in the rural industry and encourage all our youth members to participate in Charolais Youth Activities when the opportunity arises. 25
Proven Science at Wallabadah By Colin Rex
Based at Wallabadah in the New South Wales Great Dividing Range John Dekoyer is sold on the merits of utilising heterosis in his breeding program. John says “the data is well proven” and his observations of the North American cattle industry supports his belief. John spent several years on the Canadian Rodeo circuit and saw firsthand the benefits of planned crossbreeding programs. John and his father Joss own the 971 hectare property “Redlands” some 60km south of Tamworth. Relocating from the Gloucester district in 2000 the Dekoyer’s introduced Charolais sires eight years ago. Prior to this Angus bulls were used over the Angus and Angus cross herd. The area should have an annual rainfall of 32-34inches but John reports lately it has been more in the low 20” range. 26 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
John said “the area normally had a very good spring but the last three years had missed the spring”. Due to this John has reduced his breeding herd back to 320 breeders from his usual 350 to 380 calvers. John’s program is based on purchasing replacement PTIC females and selling all progeny by the Charolais sire as terminal. John has a preference for Angus cross breeders and really likes the black baldy. John aims to buy females in synch with his calving season of July/ August. Redlands ranges from 700metres above sea level at the homestead area to over 1000metres in the back country. John has found the medium framed females cope better with the slopes. Take it from someone who has driven around this property there are some steep slopes. The Redlands property is only cleared over approximately sixty percent.
The soil is healthy basalt country and the pastures are native based. John spreads clover seed occasionally as well as super or gypsum every two years, season willing. The calves are sold annually at the Powerhouse Weaner sale at Gunnedah in early April and this suits John’s program. This sale features a large draft of Charolais calves each year. He is creeping his calving earlier to allow increased weaning weight in his calves. With weaning weights averaging over 300kgs over the entire drop including heifers John is very pleased with his cowherd ability. John appreciates the ability of the Charolais sires to add carcase merit to the crossbred heifers. He said “the feedlot buyers are prepared to pay the same for his heifers as his steers adding value to his drop”.
“
feedlot buyers are “ theprepared to pay the
same for our heifers as our steers adding value to our drop” John Dekoyer.
At this sale the Charolais calves are drafted in even lines on muscle and colour and John reports a 5c/ kg premium for the cream coloured calves over the silvers. His observations in North America were that the Red Baldy (Red Angus x Hereford) was one of the most productive cows however he has found it hard to source this cross in Australia. The first introduction of Charolais sires saw head to head comparisons with the calves by the existing Angus sires in the same conditions. John reported a significant difference in the weaning weights between the Angus and Charolais sire groups.
John rotationally grazes his herd in two mobs on a slow rotation. On average the rotation takes six to eight weeks and this has eliminated the need for drenching the cow herd. Stock work is done by horseback and the cattle are very quiet due to the rotation handling. Calves receive 7in1 and cows are selenium treated each year. John is achieving excellent results from his low input program.
The fact that the sire battery is now 100% Charolais is testament to those results. Bulls are worked at 1:45 cows in multi sire joining groups. When selecting sires John looks for heavy muscled sires with cover, strong carcase traits and prefers early maturing growth patterns. Sires have been selected from Palgrove and local Tamworth sales. John reports pregnancy rates at 95% with 93% achieved this joining from a very ordinary spring when joining was occurring. This is where John appreciates the medium framed Angus cross female and the ability to perform in the steep country. Cows are kept to ten years of age and empty females are culled from the herd.
Top: An outstanding Silver Charolais calf from a black baldy cow on Redlands. Below: The Redlands herd grazing actively the hills and timbered country.
Driving around the herd the calves’ exhibit tremendous growth and muscle compared to their medium framed dams. Even with the tough season northern New South Wales has experienced spring 2014 and early 2015 the calves will wean at great weights. John reported that normally his calves would have more bloom but the current hard season had restricted this. The Charolais contribution to the Redlands program is obvious and John reports that even with the increased weaning weights he has experienced no difference in calving difficulty from the Angus sires used previously. This program is really working and Redlands calves are keenly sought after by repeat buyers when offered at the annual Gunnedah weaner sale. Further proof of the success of the Redlands breeding program was at the 2013 Brisbane EKKA trade competition. The Grand Champion Pen of Trade Steers and the Reserve Champion Pen of Steers at this prestigious event were from the Redlands breeding program. These steers were out of Hereford/Angus cows and by Palgrove bulls. The Brisbane judge described the steers as ‘the perfect Coles/Woolworths’ premium article.

Redlands Charolais Silver calves on offer at Gunnedah Weaner Sale highlighting their outstanding consistency.
Charolais Silver calves have been in strong demand in the south. Sale reports from Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales have indicated strong demand for Charolais cross weaners. In January at Wodonga the weaner market kicked off with a pen of the Cook Family’s, Rangan Charolais steers. The pen of 21 steers weighing an average 442kg made $1,105 or 250c/kg. It set the scene for things to come, with the very next pen from the same vendor making 277c/kg for 348kg steers, or $965. Still in Victoria at Yea in early January Peter and Gerard Hauser sold a pen of 12 Charolais/Angus weaners for $970 per head. Another pen of 25 head from this vendor sold for $900. At the same sale A & G Christie sold their 18 Charolais Hereford weaners for $950. 28 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
At Euroa WB & MA Gibb sold their top Charolais Angus calves for $920 per head. Charolais calves have been keenly sought after at Yea for many years and this year was no exception. Tarrawarra Abbey sold their Charolais Red Angus calves to a top of $965. Dredge and Newcomen sold the same cross for $900 per head and Bridon sold Charolais Angus steers to a top of $980. Also in January on the western side of the country Charolais calves were in strong demand at Boyanup. G & K Gray sold steers weighing 420kg at $2.49kg to return $1,046 per head. C & C Minson sold seven cross steers for $941. These steers weighed 373kg and sold at $2.52kg. In early March at Boyanup, Buckingham Beef sold six Charolais Heifers weighing 395kg for a return of $1,092.50 per head. On April 9th Davidson and Cameron & Co held their annual Powerhouse Liveweight Weaner sale at Gunnedah, New South Wales and over 1,000 Charolais cross weaners were offered for sale. The calves on offer included the annual draft of the Dekoyer family from Redlands at Wallabadah who featured in the previous page editorial. The Redlands offering comprised 134 steers with an average weight of 330kg. These calves sold to a top of $2.59kg.

George Crocombe and Rob Perkins with calves to be weaned
Maximising Productivity By Jenny Kelly
Producer George Crocombe has built one of Victoria’s biggest beef herds on the principal of matching the cow to the environment, and choosing bull power for growth and marketability.
Today Narweena Station sells the largest one-mark line of weaner cattle offered on AuctionsPlus each year in Victoria, with 600 Charolais sired steers and heifers catalogued for sale each January.
It has, after trying various breeds over the years, led the 84-year-old to a herd base of Angus and black baldy cows joined to Charolais bulls. “I believe you have to have your breeders according to the district, and the bulls according to what the market wants,’’ he said.
“With a system like AuctionsPlus you have more control because the cattle don’t leave the property until you know the price, and there is less stress on the animals which the volume buyers such as feedlots prefer,’’ George said.
George owns Narweena Station, a 1100 hectare property near Penshurst in the Western District of Victoria. It is run in partnership with his British cousin Rob Perkins and wife Angela, who migrated from England several years ago to help manage the operation. While not a traditional succession plan, it works for the pair who both have a background in dairying and a practical approach to farming. It also speaks volumes about George’s willingness to look at different options – an approach he has taken with the marketing of the Narweena Station calves. While situated just 30 minutes from Hamilton which hosts some of Victoria’s biggest New Year weaner sales, George began using AuctionsPlus to sell calves on-farm when the computer selling system wasn’t particularly well supported. 32 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
“I think there is a shift to this type of selling among people who produce bigger numbers, particularly because of the costs involved with selling at saleyards.’’ While George was raised on a dairy farm in Gippsland, his career was based in the financial and business sector, spending 20 years with the ANZ bank before developing a motel at Foster. He said while there was a perception among many people that large cattle numbers automatically meant better profit margins, they were under the same pressure as all other producers. “The more cattle you have the more costs you have as well – we would have $100,000 worth of bulls in the paddock – so it is all relative,’’ he said.
“
“
The beauty of the Charolais is they suit a range of markets and their growth rate is so much better than any other breed I’ve dealt with, to have calves weigh over 400kg in some of the tough season’s we’ve had – well, in my opinion not many other cattle could match it.
Narweena Angus based breeders which are joined to Charolais sires with great success.
“Farming in general has become a tough job as we are all being asked to do more for less, and the only thing you can control is the product you produce and your costs,’’ he said.
“Our aim is to produce as much weaned weight as possible, as size always wins when it comes to dollar per head returns and that is what we look at, not the c/kg return as that fluctuates so much each year,’’ he said.
Narweena began using Charolais bulls more than a decade ago, and George said he was won over by their weight gain, temperament, ability to sire even calves over a big cow herd, and their appeal to a range of buyers, from domestic grain feeders through to grass finishers.
George has become passionate about Charolais cattle, but while they did trial some of their Charolais-cross bred heifer calves as breeders they weren’t practical due to size. “They are beautiful big cows, but too big for this district where it can get very cold and wet in the winter, and they can pug the ground and require more feeding,’’ he said.
“The beauty of the Charolais is they suit a range of markets and their growth rate is so much better than any other breed I’ve dealt with,’’ he said: “To have calves weigh over 400kg in some of the tough season’s we’ve had – well, in my opinion not many other cattle could match it.’’ This year Narweena’s top 102 Charolais Angus-cross steers, born in March/April, weaned in December and sold on AuctionsPlus in January, averaged 400kg curfewed liveweight, with the heaviest individual animal tipping the scales at 485kg. Overall the entire draft of 600 steers and heifers averaged 346kg liveweight and sold for an average of 237c/kg or $822 per head, many selling to repeat buyers stretching from King Island in the south to NSW in the north. Rob said it was their best price result on record, thanks to this year’s summer price spike for young cattle as well as extra weight in the calves.
“I’m not a big fan of the Angus temperament, but for this area they are perfect – we don’t want cows that are much bigger than 550-600kg.’’ Narweena comprises black soil country with stoney rises, and is in a winter dominant 24 inch rainfall area. Rob said in most seasons they had to feed hay from April through to August or September, with more than 2000 round bales cut from specially prepared fodder paddocks which are sown to ryegrass and clover and spread with 250kg of MAP fertiliser each year. “We feed hay on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we budget on each cow and calf getting about 600kg of hay in winter,’’ he said.
“It was our best result to date and we certainly hit the sweet spot with the market this year, but we also seem to be getting a bit more weight into the calves each year which is helping. This year the autumn drop mixed sex calves averaged 346kg, compared to 335kg in 2014 and 331kg in January 2013. Narweena sources its bulls from the local Delamere and Mt William studs, and in recent seasons have made it a policy to only buy Polled genetics. Rob said while they liked a bull with good muscle and growth figures, it had to be balanced with easy calving as they tried to run the operation on tight labour units.

The property is run in a structured manner to help reduce labour costs. It is fenced into 50 paddocks – all joined by a laneway system leading into under-cover yards - and the cows are run in groups of 45 head. Rob said each group of cows had their own block of three paddocks, which they rotated through in a simple cell-grazing system. “It’s practical as 45 cows equals one bull at joining and one bale of hay per feed, and it’s a comfortable number to work with in the yards,’’ he said. This year the property has increased its herd to 1000 cows, and will calve down about 700 head in the autumn and the balance in the spring. Included in this is an annual draft of Angus heifers, joined to Angus bulls each year, to breed replacement females. “We’ve been working towards 1000 cows and we’ve got there this year, and while I think it is possible in a good season, I’m not sure yet how many good years you can expect in this country and this year will test us as it has been so dry,’’ he said.
Last year George, Rob and Angela were finalists in the Coles Farmer of the Year awards in Victoria, and their focus is always to maximise production at every opportunity. Each summer they select cull cows, which are grouped together and not rejoined after calving in the autumn, so that the cows hold condition and have a better slaughter value. And any cows that miss during the eight-week joining period for an autumn calving are pushed over into the spring mob. But Rob said, like many weaner/vealer producers in the south, their income was closely tied to how the cattle market was performing each summer, and he is keen to see the beef market sustain this year’s price increases and show more consistency. “Our calf price in January was $200 a head up on the past two years and we would certainly like to see more results like that,’’ he said.
“We haven’t had a proper rainy day since August. But we do have good stores of hay and being an x-dairy producer I know the benefit of feeding as you see it every day in the milk tank so you have to have a balance of numbers and production.’’

Charolais National Show and Sale 2014 By Gavin O’Brien, NSW Chairman and National Show and Sale Coordinator In October last year the National Charolais Show and Sale returned to its foundations at the Dubbo Exhibition Centre. The National Sale was conducted at Dubbo Showground for many years before shifting to Tamworth. A great few days were had by the members, vendors and Charolais enthusiasts. The formal dinner was held at the Macquarie Inn with 65 people in attendance. It was a very enjoyable evening with Breed President, Keith Glasson and the NSW Chairman Gavin O’Brien addressing attendees which was well received with the customary few laughs along the way. Valuable funds were raised toward the National Show and Sale and the Charolais breeds youth activities via an Auction during the evening.
We also had the pleasure of announcing the 50th wedding anniversary for Ian and Jenny Douglas. The judging was overseen by Mr Greg Fuller from Pine Creek Angus which resulted in Champion bull being awarded to Airlie Jimmy, Reserve Champion bull was Bolong Jamison. Junior Champion female was Moongool Diana, Senior Champion female and Supreme Exhibit was Winchester Daisy Duke G29E. The female section of the sale saw a 92% clearance to average $3,714 with top price of $11,500. The bull section of the sale saw an 80% clearance to average $4,750 to top at $6,000 twice.
This has formed a very solid foundation for future sales. The quality of the stock was evident. The purpose of the sale is to allow breeders to offer true top end stock that are the cream of the breed. The Grand Champion female at the Sydney Royal 2015 was purchased from the National Show and Sale in 2014 so there is no doubting the quality of the lots on offer. This year National will run from the 8 – 10th of October 2015 at Dubbo Showground and will run to the same format of last year’s sale. We look forward to your participation and support for this year’s sale. Members will be posted information on this years event. Commercial breeders are most welcome and sale information will be posted in August on our website www.charolais.com.au The office can also be contacted for further information.

Tools of the trade: Crossbreeding By Gemma Wilkinson, SBTS Carefully planned and well managed crossbreeding systems are a tool which have the potential to deliver significant benefits to beef producers. Travel anywhere in regional Australia and you are bound to see numerous herds of crossbred cattle, with many commercial producers taking advantage of the performance “boost” created by mixing two or more purebreds. The main benefits of crossbreeding result from: • Additional performance as a result of hybrid vigour (also known as heterosis). • The ability to combine the benefits of different breeds (also known as breed complementarity). Hybrid Vigour (or Heterosis) Hybrid vigour is the amount by which the performance of the crossbred animals exceed (or differ from) the average performance of the purebred parents that are used in the cross. An example of this for weaning weight is demonstrated in Figure 1. 38 May 2015 Charolais Magazine
This was further illustrated in a crossbreeding research trial undertaken by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries which highlighted the benefits achieved through a structured crossbreeding program for weaning weight. This trial included crosses of Hereford, Angus and Shorthorn cattle in Southern Queensland.
The results of this trial are demonstrated in Figure 2. Compared to the straight bred calves, the F1 crossbred calves showed on average an 8.5% increase in weaning weight per cow mated. While significant, a larger increase of 23.3% was observed is the F2 calves, being those calves bred from F1 cows. The additional “boost” was obtained from maternal heterosis.
Importantly, heterosis is not just observed for weaning weight but in many economically important beef cattle production traits, especially in traits of “low” heritability such as reproduction and adaptability traits. Table1 below illustrates the relationship between heritability and heterosis for different categories of beef cattle traits.
To re-iterate, to fully benefit from hybrid vigour the cow herd should also be crossbred to also take advantage of maternal heterosis. Crossbred cows when compared to purebred females will generally have: • increased conception rates • improved calving ease • increased percentage of calves weaned • a longer production life (i.e. longevity) Breed Complementarity Breed Complementarity results when combining the strong traits of one or more breeds to compensate for the weak traits of another breed. For example, a British breed female (eg. Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn) mated to a European breed sire (eg. Charolais, Simmental, Limousin) complement each other exceptionally well. In general terms, the British breed female contributes early maturity, easy finishing and calving ease while the European breed sire contributes high growth and muscle.
Reproduction and maternal traits have low heritability and the traditional response to selection in breeding programs will generally be slower compared to high heritability traits. At the same time however, significant improvement in these traits can be made through programs that maximize heterosis. The inverse is true with carcase traits. Significant and rapid progress can be made through selection for carcase traits in a breeding program, while crossbreeding has little or no heterosis effect. Growth traits are moderate for both heritability and heterosis, making progress possible through both selection and crossbreeding.
Alternatively, a simple cross breeding system could utilise two different British breeds (eg. Shorthorn/Hereford and Angus genetics). This example requires two joining mobs, with the daughters of the Angus sires being joined to the Shorthorn/Hereford sire and vice versa (known as a criss-cross mating system). These breeds work in this system as they both have maternal qualities, and are complementary in carcase and maturity patterns. In addition, the system is relatively easy to manage, generates its own replacement females, which in turn provide the benefits from the maternal hybrid vigour that will expressed.
The amount of hybrid vigour achieved will depend on the type of crossbreeding or composite system implemented. A composite breeding program is a crossbreeding system that is stabilised (inter-mating the crossbreds). Table 2 lists the types of crossbreeding systems, the levels hybrid vigour (both individual and maternal) retained and estimates of increases in weaning weight per cow mated.
cont page 40....

Tools of the trade: Crossbreeding cont from page 39 Crossbreeding Considerations There some considerations that need to be taken into account regarding the implementation of a crossbreeding program. These include: • Managing and/or sourcing replacement females (depending on crossbreeding system implemented). • Crossbreeding programs may require more joining groups than a purebred system. This could be eased by purchasing replacement heifers although locating a source of heifers available on a regular basis with suitable health status and known breeding may be difficult. • Hybrid vigour may result in higher birth weights when sires of a high growth rate breed are joined to heifers of a smaller breed. Selection of suitable genetics is essential to counteract this negative. • Crossbred females may be larger and therefore consume more feed than purebred females. Research has indicated that productivity per hectare still favours the crossbred female. Selection & Crossbreeding Crossbreeding should not be seen as an excuse for using “low” performing genetics (i.e. bulls) within a breeding program. Regardless of hybrid vigour, the performance of the crossbred herd will depend largely on the genetics of the parent, the management level and the environment that is used. Figure 3 illustrates the benefits of combining selection with crossbreeding.
Several tools should be utilised within the beef producer’s tool kit to ensure the “best” genetics are used in the crossbreeding program, including: BREEDPLAN EBVs BREEDPLAN is a genetic evaluation system for beef cattle breeders offering the potential to accelerate genetic progress in their herds, and to provide objective information on stock they sell to commercial breeders. BREEDPLAN uses the world’s most advanced genetic evaluation system (based on Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology) to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility). Included in the calculation of EBVs are the animal’s own performance, the performance of known relatives, the heritability of each trait and the relationship between the different traits BreedObject Selection Indexes Selection Indexes enable cattle producers to make “balanced” selection decisions, taking into account the relevant growth, carcase & fertility attributes of each animal to identify the animal that is most profitable for their particular commercial enterprise. Selection Indexes reflect both the short term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. Utilising both selection and cross breeding will result in maximum benefit within a breeding program. Competitors at the 2015 Glen Innes Charolais Youth Stampede.
Stampeding to Glen Innes By Caitlin Warner In January this year Glen Innes, in northern NSW played host to the 2015 NSW Charolais Youth Stampede. Competitors attended different workshops ranging from the most basic of activities of how to wash, groom and tie up ones’ animal, through to more advanced aspects of animal selection and artificial breeding. Between the educational aspects of the Stampede the Junior Judging, Parading and Herdsman competitions were held. Saturday morning was the Junior Judging Competition. Competitors were presented with 3 classes of animals to assess and place; keeping in mind the animal selection talk they had just been given. This proved to be challenging for most, including our Over judge Mr Chris Knox. After some careful assessment, animals were placed, oral reason given and our Champion Junior Judge awarded to Daniel Miller, and Reserve Champion to Laura Lockhart.
Saturday afternoon saw Mr Jason Salier, Minnie Vale Charolais judging the cattle classes. There was a great line-up of animals at this year’s event to challenge our judge. We decided at this years Stampede we would change it up a little in regards to Supreme Exhibit, and left the final result to a public vote. Each competitor and visitor were given one vote to be used to nominate their pick of the division champions, and the animal with the most votes was sashed Supreme Exhibit. The pressure was on for our judge at the end of the day, as we asked him to let us know who he would pick as the eventual winner if it wasn’t for the public vote. Luckily most voters agreed with him, and DSK PGM Beatrix was named Supreme Exhibit of the Stampede.

Sunday morning the paraders competition was held and our Judge, Mr David Smith, put all competitors through their paces. It was a tough morning for him as we have such eager, knowledgeable and competitive youth in our breed. Tim Eyes was decided as the eventual Champion, with Brooke Elsley Reserve Champion. Over the few days of the Stampede, every competitor was observed by a panel of herdsman judges. Competitors were judged on the way they took care of their animals, interacted with and helped fellow competitors and took part in workshops and activities. Jasmine Ramage was awarded Champion Herdsman and Tom Noonan Reserve Champion. Chris Knox, always one to challenge young minds, put together a “Know your stuff activity for all competitors. He collected and bagged 25 common (and not so common) weeds, grains and other items one might find around the farm and asked competitors to try and name each one. Some competitors did very well, correctly guessing 20 of the 25 items, but Tom Noonan was the eventual winner with 22 of the 25 items identified. Good work Tom! Other awards that were given out at the Stampede were Most Potential Breeder, given to Laura Lockhart. Encouragement Award was given to Adam Vickery, who will be able to attend the 2016 Stampede as part of his prize and the Persistence Award given to Amy Whitechurch. A massive thank you must be given to our fantastic sponsors, without their support these events could not be run. We must also thank the donors of ballot cattle, it was a fantastic showing of quality cattle! Thank you also to our Judges and parents who all took time out of their weekends to help us make this such a successful weekend.

CHAROLAIS SILVER CALVES
50% ANGUS 50% CHAROLAIS $100 GREATER PROFIT
What is a Charolais Silver Calf? Charolais Silver Calves are quickly developing a reputation among informed beef producers as a smarter alternative and financially more rewarding way to produce beef cattle. They are the result of cross breeding Charolais sires with Angus females. Buyers are learning that Charolais Silver Calves consistently reach target weights at a younger age and provide a higher yielding carcase.
Hybrid vigour. That’s the silver lining. Hybrid vigour refers to the additional weight and health benefits that occur when two breeds of cattle are crossed. The progeny of a Charolais bull and Angus female can weigh up to 50 kgs heavier at 27 months which is an additional 33.5 kgs of carcase weight per calf. That is an advantage of more than $100 per head over purebred progeny. In terms of return on investment, a $5000 Charolais bull when joined to 35 cows will pay for itself in just two seasons.

Charolais. Born to cross- breed. Charolais bulls are proven performers with strong structural soundness and longevity. Their even temperament means they’re safer to handle too. And because of their distinctive colouring and gentle disposition they flourish in all Australian environments. Results speak for themselves. The breed is well recorded on BREEDPLAN for birth, growth and meat quality traits.
Richard Braham has managed Jeogla and Wallamumbi stations with a total area of 13,340 hectares and a carrying capacity of 16,000 head of cattle for the past 22 years. “Charolais bulls are purchased as terminal sires. They keep carcase quality to a premium and their progeny have shown impressive growth rates. We select bulls using BREEDPLAN for weight gain and calving ease. The structure of our bulls has been very good and we primarily cull bulls for age rather than structural problems The temperament of Charolais progeny makes them easy to work with. Temperament is very important for our feedlot market.”
