July 2020 Charolais Magazine

Wow, how the world has changed since Christmas. We were all looking forward to a wet 2020 which some areas have seen and an exceptional start to the year. Other areas have only seen enough to stop the feeding short term so let’s hope the second half of the year is much kinder to all of us. The year 2020 has not been a kind all round as we have seen a world epidemic in Covid 19 change our lives forever. This has resulted in the cancellation of the 2020 World Congress, the National Youth Stampede and all Royal /Country shows. The National Youth Stampede was to have been joint hosted with the Murray Grey Society offering another group of youth to network with. I extend my appreciation to the sub committee involved in planning “Vision 2020” with the Murray Grey Delegates. I know our youth members were looking forward to it and we will organise it again. I would like the thank the World Congress committee and staff for all their hard work. It was a pleasure to work alongside Anne Thompson, Nicole Nicholls, Ian Douglas, Roderick Binny, Matt Collins and Colin to showcase our country and cattle. I would also like to extend my appreciation to all our members that had started preparing teams for Brisbane, steers for exhibition, offered to host tours or any other expression of support. Hosting the World Congress is a large undertaking and the way the membership positively supported the committee was tremendous. When the decision was made to cancel we had paid bookings from five countries and others waiting to see how the Covid situation would eventuate. The planning is not a waste as we will bid to host again in the future. The investment of time in establishing contacts, planning routes and functions will be beneficial when we have the opportunity to host the Congress one day. The overwhelming message from international Charolais breeders is, we want to visit Australia. We are now looking forward to Beef 2021 in Rockhampton and plans are now underway to showcase our breed. Beef Australia has been a happy hunting ground for Charolais success in the past and let’s hope it’s one to remember. I urge all members to consider participating in some way in this great showcase of our industry. Beef Australia are updating their website regularly and there is a way for everybody to participate. [ www.beefaustralia.com.au ]

Australian Charolais 1970 - 2020

On the up side the cattle market has hit some new heights with Charolais cross weaner steers constantly topping sales and in some cases selling for over $1,400 per head. One sale of note was the 25 Charolais sired steer weaners offered by the Kohlhagen Family, Walla Walla, NSW that sold for $1,645 a head in late May. If members hear a good news story on Charolais commercial sales take the time to let the office know. They can then use social media channels to make use of the information. Every bit of good news adds up and could be the catalyst for another commercial producer to change. The first bull sales for the year have produced some great results with high clearances and higher averages. Overall the beef industry looks to be in a good position and Charolais keep shining in the commercial world . I would like to thank Ken Manton for his service to the Charolais board and the breed over the past six years. Ken has now retired from the board and Sapphire Halliday has come onto the board for the Victorian region. I would like to welcome Sapphire to the board and look forward to her contribution. It’s pleasing to see members prepared to step up and give back to the society. It’s no surprise the Covid 19 challenges have been dealt with by the office. Thank you to Colin and his team, Deearn and Hayley for all their work through the epidemic. The office has not missed a beat even with Deearn and Hayley working from home. With Lucy working from a home office we have a great team. With many areas of New South Wales and Queensland looking to enter a rebuilding herd phase we have a great opportunity to push for more market penetration. As a breed we have made significant strides in the type of Charolais produced here in Australia and a commitment to detail will keep the momentum rolling forward. All the best to members with auction sales in the spring and I hope everybody receives rainfall wherever they are. Let’s look forward to the next fifty years and set a goal to accomplish more than the first 50 years.

What a start to a year! Back in January and February, it actually rained in many areas that had been deficient in rainfall for an extended period. A glimmer of hope that our beautiful country would look its best for the World Congress delegates. With the Board and World Congress committee, we put the final additions on our program and released it to the international Charolais community. Feedback on our program was fantastic and bookings started rolling in. Unfortunately, the rest is history that does not need to be dwelt on here. To say cancelling the World Congress was disappointing would be a massive understatement however; the decision had to be made. The cancellation of many events has been equally disappointing but fortunately, bull sales have been able to continue. The ability of our agricultural sector to adjust and tweak their marketing, comply with health directives and embrace technology is highly commendable. Australia has a long history of online stud sales and this has placed us in a great position to continue to market successfully. Our online platforms are world class and we should be thankful for this. More than ever the events of 2020 highlight the need for the registered cattle sector to provide quantifiable data on their offering. This can include BREEDPLAN, structural assessment and genomic data, which can improve the confidence of buyers to bid unseen on web, based platforms. In our fifty years of Charolais breeding in Australia, we have faced adversity before and we will again. Whilst Covid19 has had an impact on our life and economy, it does not reduce the attributes of our tremendous breed. We have a responsibility to the Australian Beef Industry to provide a functional option for commercial producers to improve their bottom line.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts

From The Office

From a Society point of view, we have seen Deearn and Hayley work remotely for the last four months and I have continued in the office. This policy has mitigated the risk of complete office closure and we have been able to continue to provide the same level of service members expect. Lucy has worked from her home office undertaking graphic design for members so life for her has been pretty much the same with just some extra teaching duties thrown in. The Society graphic design service is tremendous value compared to other providers and we pride ourselves on getting work completed on time every time. Using a data extract for pedigree and performance data from the database reduces proof reading and errors and is available at a very cheap cost. Our Board meetings have continued through teleconference. With email, teleconferences and other technology the reality is the board can continue to contribute without the necessity of travel. As a society, we never rest with the evaluation and review of our procedures. Any advancement that can contribute to the efficiency of the Society is implemented. The travel restrictions in Australia between states has resulted in the Annual General Meeting being delayed. With new announcements being made by State Premiers regularly we hope to run the Annual General Meeting in either late July or early August. All members will receive notification as soon as a decision has been made on the date. At the Board level we farewell Victorian representative Ken Manton after six years of service. Sapphire Halliday is the new Victorian representative. We extend a welcome to Sapphire and our appreciation to Ken for his time and service on the Charolais board. Brendan Scheiwe continues as President for his third term with Alan Goodland Vice President. Matthew Collins continues in his valued Treasurer role with Robin Yost and Murray Ferme and Sapphire rounding out the 2020 Board. The semi lockdown has given the Society the opportunity to evaluate practices such as DNA submissions. We have encouraged members to send DNA samples for testing direct to Neogen with paperwork provided from the Society. This has reduced postage timeframes and resulted in a faster turnaround for test results. As long as members contact the office to obtain the correct documentation, we will continue this process in the future. Members can send their samples to the office for submission if they prefer. It has been pleasing to see members increase the level of DNA testing in the breed with a substantial increase in parentage verification. This process is assisting in the process of validating the integrity of the records held. We are rapidly increasing our genomic data with the next step utilising this information in a Single Step BREEDPLAN analysis. One issue we are seeing is breeders purchasing a bull for stud duties and assuming because the animal is parent verified or homozygous poll tested that all testing required for the Society registration of progeny is complete. Sire verification can be undertaken with a Seeksire test, which is not sufficient for progeny to be registered. If in doubt, please contact the office. We can look at the animals test results and advise if and what is required for registration of progeny to occur. We also recommend completing all DNA test requirements before using the sire.

From the Office ...cont from page 11 In recent weeks the Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association [ARCBA] have released their membership and registration reports for 2019. It is pleasing to see Charolais performed well based on trends compared to many other breeds. In the Membership report for the year the number of members across all breeds contracted by just over 9%. In Charolais, we reduced full membership by 4%. Some breeds observed significant contraction in membership numbers. Remember that these statistics relate to the 2019 year, which was impacted by drought in many areas. These reports always have a time lag to compile and registrations are based on a processing date rather than the animal’s date of birth. Across all breeds primary registrations decreased by 6% with Charolais recording a very pleasing drop of only 2.6% or 208 head. On a five year, rolling registration average our decrease is only 142 head. The reality is this equates to one medium size herd being late with registrations. The majority of Charolais breeding females are located in Queensland and northern New South Wales, the epicenter of the recent lasting drought. Accounting for these factors beyond our control, I am very happy with the result and believe that we can pick up numbers quickly as herds rebuild. Two of our direct competitor breeds had significant reductions in registration. This saw Charolais primary registrations increasing by 5% to 43% of the European sector.

Based on the ARCBA reports in the European breed sector Charolais registered the most calves per breed in 2003. The breed has continued this dominance every year since and on recent trends may be increasing the market share in the European sector. This reflects the type of industry relevant cattle our members are breeding. The modern Australian Charolais has been rigorously developed in multiple environments to perform at the highest level. This is why we continue to see strong demand for Charolais genetics. Sadly, travel and gathering restrictions have to date put a dampener on celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Charolais in Australia. I am hopeful that this situation will ease and before the year-end, we can give this milestone the credit it deserves. We were not just a new breed in this country; we were the first European breed that was a radical change in type from breeding options available. In the same period, we have seen the dominance of the Hereford breed overtaken by the Angus breed. In the north, Bos Indicus breeding programs replaced the British breeds with their adaption superiority. For us this provides a large pool of maternal orientated breeds to promote the value of cross breeding. The lamb industry has been at the forefront with two and three way cross breeding programs but for some reason the beef industry lags a fraction behind. This is certainly an opportunity to be grasped and run with to increase the Charolais penetration. cont page 14....

Reading the Meat and Livestock Australia website, the outlook for the beef industry, things are looking positive. Positive rainfall forecasts will favour a rebuilding phase of the national herd. Whilst overall national beef production is forecast to reduce there may be the opportunity to turn off cattle at higher slaughter weights, which is great news for the Charolais breed. In more great news, the Charolais breed has recorded some great sales in the last few months. Ascot Charolais recorded a $28,000 sale to top the Autumn bull sale series. They also recorded an average of $8,250 closely followed by Rosedale with a $8,137 average. Both of these sales recorded an 100% clearance. In total Autumn auction sales have seen 315 sires sold recording a clearance of 86%. The auction average was $6,542. The comparative 2019 data was 309 bulls sold at a 73% clearance to average $5,327. Conversations with breeders in Queensland indicate there has been strong demand for paddock sales with the improved season. This bodes well for a strong spring bull sale season. Demand for Charolais sired calves at sale centres in Queensland especially Roma have seen sale reports with Charolais in the headline. Roma quotations have reported Charolais results in the tops every week it seems. In last weeks Roma sale (9th June 2020) quoted sale topping Charolais steers had a 20c/kg premium over Angus.

The commitment of Charolais breeders to supporting the community has been evident lately. There is a report in this publication on Terry and Maylene Griffin, Temana stud donating a steer to be auctioned for the Victor Chang Foundation. This publication also contains an advert for an upcoming genetics sale to support Mental Health fundraising and awareness. Andrew, Anne and Harris Thompson, Venturon Charolais are donating these genetics. These packages are more than just a little special and will support a cause close to the rural community. We are also planning a genetics auction in the near future offering semen and embryos donated to support the Garret Youth Scholarshsip fund. These genetics have been donated by Lynn Noller and family and were accumulated by the late Jeff Noller. Finally for this column, thank you to Deearn, Lucy and Hayley for working from home through a difficult time with awesome dedication. The Charolais Society is so fortunate to have your skill set and attitude.

Toogoolawah Char Premium Shepherdson & Boyd Annual Weaner Sale

The Annual Toogoolawah Weaner sale conducted by Shepherdson and Boyd again highlighted the value in Charolais cross breeding programs. With over 1,820 Charolais steer weaners from the 3206 on offer buyers consistently paid a premium for the Charolais infused calves. The majority of these calves are bred locally with Brahman cross dams offering three way heterosis. Plenty of good judges around the yards estimated many of the steers were making better than $5/kg liveweight. With over 5,000 calves on offer, this sale attracts repeat buyers from the entire eastern seaboard. For the first time the sale was live streamed on Elite Livestock Auctions offering buyers a bidding alternative. The impact of Covid 19 social distancing and travel restrictions made little impact on the feature sale. Champion Pen of Charolais Infused steers were offered by Jilrift Pty Ltd which also won champion Overall Pen of Steers. Best pen of Charolais sired heifers and best pen of heifers overall was offered by R & C Buckham. Charolais Judges separately presented A & M Perrott the award from the Charolais Society Queensland Region for best presented Charolais sired pen. Old Hidden Vale won the Charolais Society best pen of heifers. Both these vendors received a $500 cash voucher. The top steers were came from Old Hidden Vale. The very well grown Charolais-cross, which were the champion pen of steers in the pre-sale judging, sold for $1440 to Victorian buyers. Lyndhurst, Crows Nest, sold 207 Charolaiscross steers for a top of $1300 to average $1255. Luck Farming sold two pens of Charolais-cross steers for $1290. Colin and Sharon Henderson’s Charolais-cross calves sold for $1310. Pauline Kelly, Geneast, sold Charolais steer calves for $1340 and $1280. The Titmarsh family, Tandora, Maryborough sold 220 outstanding steers, which averaged $1299. Their Charolaiscross steers topped $1420 and the Simmental-cross $1350. Peter Stanton, Kilcoy Butchery, sold a great draft of Charolais calves, which topped $1400, and Angus at $1210. The Gittins family, Goomeri, sold quality Charolais-cross for $1210 and Droughtmaster-cross $1090. Darren Pratten’s Charolais-cross steer made to $1030. A small offering (93) of Simmental steers topped the averages for a breed at $1224. The top 350 Charolais infused steers averaged $1352 showing a clear premium for Charolais genetics. Overall, 1820 Charolais steers averaged $1184. This was the second best breed average and achieved on the largest offering with a gross of $2.155 million. Price per head Charolais genetics had 16 of the top 20 pens. The heifer market rose to new heights with excellent demand from NSW and Victorian buyers. Lyndhust sold 160 Charolais infused heifers to $1250 to average $1055. Tandora had an excellent draft of 188 head, which averaged $1137. This sale is a great promotion of the ability of Charolais sires to get calves in some tough country. Astute buyers bid freely on these weaners recognised as good doing cattle. Many of these calves are bred in tick country and bounce away when placed on good feed. Calves purchased out of this sale have also competed with success at the Brisbane Royal Prime Pen show. The Virtual Show 2020 Judge: Mr Roger & Mrs Niaomi Evans, Tamworth NSW

With shows cancelled across the nation the team at Five Star Creative Promotions rolled out a Virtual Online Show across many breeds. Matt and Shannon Sowden organised a tremendous line up of judges and watched as the entries roll in. To enter the competition a profile photograph of the animal was submitted for the breed judges to adjudicate. Judges after evaluation videoed their comments and these videos were posted online. Entries across all categories topped 500 head. In the Charolais Section, the judges were Roger and Niaomi Evans from Nagol Park Shorthorns at Tamworth. Both have a long line of achievements in the show ring, both as exhibitors and judges. Tookawhile Piccadilly Punch (P) exhibited by the Murray, Nicole, Catherine and Heidi Nicholls, Tookawhile, Kyogle NSW won the champion bull award. This bull is rich in Temana bloodlines being sired by Temana Louie L35E (P) and out of a dam from Temana carrying Piccadilly Blue Blood lines. This sire bred well for the Temana stud back in the 1980s. Piccadilly Punch was the Junior Champion Bull at Brisbane Royal in 2019. Roger and Niaomi commented, “There is a lot of punch coupled with a great degree of softness in this red factor poll bull. Look down through the stifle and there is a lot of softness with the ability to soften that goes right through to the softness and loose skin through the neck region and amount of dewlap and jowl. We really do appreciate the strength of muzzle, softness of hide and his hooded eye. As an overall package when you require yield and softness together, this bull does a great job of that.”

Reserve champion bull was Yendarra Qantas shown by Yendarra Charolais. The judges commented, “This 16 month old bull we appreciate for expression of muscle and the body type we see in this calf. When you get up on the chime he is strong through there with strength through the lumbar region, and again an expression of hindquarter that carries through to a good angle of hock, that we see in this bull. A bull that gives us some power and some expression of muscle without going to strong in the front end”. In the female class a half-sister to the champion bull took the honours. Tookawhile Pitch Perfect also sired by Temana Louie and photographed with her January born calf sired by Footprints Ranchhand 835U (P) attracted the eye of the judges. Roger and Niaomi commented, “This 26 month old female calved at close to 24 months and had admirable capacity with perhaps not quite the neck extension of the reserve champion female. They really admired the strength of muzzle, soft eye, and nice soft skin on a female that was balanced in structure with a nice udder setup”. The judges also commented favourably on the teat size and shape of this young female on her first lactation. Reserve champion female was exhibited by Elite Cattle Co. Their entry was Elite Hope P45. The judges commented, “This heifer at 15 months really excels through the length and stretch of neck and head extension. She is really clean through the shoulder, we love the angle of the shoulder, and really admire the capacity through the hindquarter and how the softness of the hindquarter flows down to a real nice angle of hock”.

Weight gain is where the dollars are and Charolais deliver that very well. Alan Stevenson

Great Gains With Charolais Bulls Alan & Denise Stevenson, Springsure

Matt Sherrington, (Article & Images courtesy QCL) The distinct weight gain advantage provided by Charolais bulls has been the driving force behind the Stevenson family’s utilisation of the breed in their Springsure-based crossbreeding operation. Alan and Denise Stevenson breed and background, and occasionally fatten, steers for the EU feeder market on their properties Spring Creek and One Stone, with their eldest son Malcolm and younger son Aiden. One Stone (540ha), purchased in 2017, is used as a breeder paddock for 100 cows from which calves are weaned straight to Spring Creek (11,600ha), which has been in the family since 1926, where further breeding and all other operational activities are carried out. The family run a multi-breed crossbreeding operation, using a Sangha/Droughtmaster base crossing to European blood and Angus, and back again. “We try to keep the Charolais content between a quarter to a half, and as the frame size rises and the coat less slick we cross back with a more slick coated tropically adapted breed, including Droughtmaster, Belmont Red or Senepol,” Mr Stevenson said. “We’ve recently cycled back to Charolais as the EU content of the breeder mob was cycling down below a quarter on average,” he said. In their current cycle they’ve only been using Charolais for two years, as they usually have a full Euro breed crossing into the herd for six to seven years, however, they purchased their first Charolais bull 18 years ago. “Weight gain is where the dollars are and Charolais deliver that very well. There are a lot of quality Charolais studs around, so there is an increasing number of good bulls available to pick from. 22

July 2020 Charolais Magazine

They join just under 1000 breeder, while their total stock numbers vary from 2000 to 2600 head depending on the time of year. The family also buy in extra weaners to background. He said they target the EU feeder market for most of the steers, and the heavy domestic feeder market for the heifers. “We do keep one paddock to fatten bullocks, again for the EU/MSA spec cattle. “Depending on the wet season, 420 to 480kg feeder steers are sold at 18 to 26 months, while EU fat bullocks/heifers are sold at 30 to 33 months on average.” The bulls are put in the paddock in the first week of November and are usually pulled out by early February. “We’ve found that the most consistent way for us to get 300kg weaners here is to have an August to early October calf. “Historically first storms can arrive somewhat reliably from late October onward in this area, and the dramatic milk and feed quality increase can be utilised best by the early spring older calf. Also, the cows tend to cycle soon after the season break just when our fresh bulls go in and thus our next early calf is already locked in.” Mr Stevenson said he prefers to use as much data presale as he can to filter our prospective choices when selecting bulls to purchase. Sires have been purchased from the Bebbingtons at Mountview Charolais as they use EBV’s and seem to specialise in the softer fleshier and structurally more efficient bulls we prefer. They advertise with good video and information well before their sales and I like to take my time looking through that.”

Bebbington Norton purchased by the Stevenson Family at the annual Aggrow Sale.

At the 2019 Ag-Grow sale the family purchased Mountview Norton N35 for $11,500. “He’s a soft beefy boy that went out into a terrible season and did it tough yet stuck with the cows as the grass ran out. I was very impressed with how quickly he pulled condition back on after joining was over. His calves will start dropping in a few months and I’m very keen to see them.” He said fertility, fleshing, softness, correct structure and temperament are what they require in a bull. “We try to buy bulls that will father the daughters we can use here, long term. The steers are a by-product. If we get the cows right they produce steers that work. Alan said “I like to do my homework on figures before we go to a sale, that way we only have to look carefully at the few bulls that fit all our criteria. Then they have to be physically right before we wave at the auctioneer.” Mr Stevenson said after seven very poor wet seasons in a row they’ve received 340mm from mid January to early March this year. The properties received another 8mm in late May which was the first rain since then. At present they have no plans to make any drastic changes to their operation in the foreseeable future. “We’re fine-tuning what we already do and staying flexible. We try to have cattle that will fit any market and which looks shiny at any given time. It’s working so far.”

Beef Battle 2020 Host: The Land published by Australian Community Media

With the major shows cancelled Australian Community Media through their publication The Land launched the “Online Beef Battle”. Judges Erica Halliday, Martin Lill and John Manchee judged the event. Entrants in The Land’s 2020 Beef Battle were beamed to a global audience with more than 11,000 views on the website live stream alone. The live judging on theland.com.au over four nights of the Bos Taurus and Bos Indicus entries culminated in an interbreed event attracting 11,772 views from 38 different countries. This was combined with similarly high numbers on the Facebook livestream. The biggest interest in the website naturally came from Australia (11,341 views) followed by New Zealand (91), Norway (72), United States (58), Argentina (54), United Kingdom (48), Singapore (17) and the Netherlands (13). Voting for the viewer’s choice competition was just as popular overseas. Support came from 12 different countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, US, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, Uruguay, Switzerland, Germany and Egypt. Australian Community Media national livestock advertising manager Brett Tindal said the Beef Battle was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the platforms the company could offer. People from around the country and across the globe tuned in to watch The Land’s 2020 Beef Battle. “There is a real interest there for people to still attend, watch and be a part of the show community and it’s really great that The Land has been able to offer that experience to them and showcase that we have the ability, the platform, the skills and the contacts to deliver these online shows,” he said.

In the popular choice voting Charolais Waterford Neon Lights N35E took the top award. He was voted the viewer’s choice winner, which attracted votes from 12 different countries. The 30-month-old 1200 kilogram bull by proven breeder Palgrove Hermes and out of Waterford Electra was exhibited by Deborah and Sapphire Halliday of Macedon and was named supreme Charolais exhibit and senior interbreed bull of the 2019 Melbourne Royal Show in what was a backto-back win for the Hallidays. Neon Lights was to have lead the Waterford team at the cancelled World Charolais Congress and this online event still provided international exposure to the breeders.

Technical Recording Embryo Transfer Calves

with BREEDPLAN

Can BREEDPLAN calculate EBV’s for embryo transfer [ET] calves?

Why does the recipient dam have to be taken into account when calculating EBVs for an ET calf?

Yes!! A unique feature of BREEDPLAN is its ability to analyse the performance of embryo transfer calves.

While the recipient dam doesn’t influence the genetics of the ET calf, there are maternal effects on the embryo and resulting calf that are attributable to the recipient dam. BREEDPLAN requires recipient dam information so that these maternal effects can be accounted for when analysing the performance of ET calves.

How does the analysis of embryo transfer (ET) calves differ from naturally mated calves? While the performance of embryo transfer calves is essentially analysed in a similar manner to the performance of naturally mated calves, the calculation of EBVs for ET calves is more complex as the maternal effect of the recipient dam on the performance of the ET calf needs to be taken into consideration. To enable the calculation of effective EBVs for ET calves, BREEDPLAN requires information about the recipient dam to have been recorded.

32

July 2020 Charolais Magazine

For example, if we take a situation where two identical embryos are implanted in recipient dams of different breeds. One is implanted into a purebred beef breed cow (eg. Brahman, Hereford) and the other implanted into a purebred dairy breed cow (eg. Fresian). These recipients are run together in the same paddock from the day of implantation, over calving and through to weaning. At weaning, the ET calves they have reared are weighed and the calf reared by the dairy recipient is considerably heavier than the calf reared by the beef recipient. As these calves are of similar genetic merit, the difference in their weights is not due to differences in their genetic potential for growth but can be attributed to the greater milking ability (ie. maternal effect) of the dairy recipient.

How does BREEDPLAN take account of the maternal effect of the recipient dam? BREEDPLAN takes account for the maternal effect of the recipient dam on the performance of the ET calf through two main steps. Firstly, ET calves are automatically analysed in a separate contemporary group to naturally mated or AI calves. That is, the performance of ET calves is not directly compared with the performance of calves conceived either naturally or by AI. Secondly, BREEDPLAN removes any differences in the maternal effect made by the recipient dams of ET calves within the contemporary group by either: Further breaking up the contemporary group into groups of calves that have all been reared by recipient dams of the same breed. In this manner, the performance of ET calves will only be directly compared with other calves where the recipient dam is of the same breed and has therefore made a similar maternal contribution. Analysing all ET calves in the same contemporary group but making adjustments to the performance of the ET calves to account for differences in the maternal effect of their recipient dam. These adjustments are made based on the breed of the recipient dam. The exact method used will vary depending on the BREEDPLAN analysis that is being conducted. For details of the method used in the analysis that is conducted for each breed, please contact staff at BREEDPLAN.

What recipient dam information is required by BREEDPLAN? For calculation of effective EBVs for ET calves, BREEDPLAN requires that, at a minimum, both the ident & breed of the recipient dam be submitted. It should be noted that the specific breed of the recipient is required (eg. Murray Grey/ Hereford) rather than a generic breed (eg. Murray Grey cross). In addition, it is recommended that breeders also submit an approximate year of birth for each recipient dam. This is important as BREEDPLAN makes adjustments to the performance of a calf based on the age of their recipient dam.

What implication does the manner in which BREEDPLAN analyses the performance for ET calves have for the seedstock producer? (i) It is imperative that breeders undertaking embryo transfer programs submit recipient dam information for their ET calves. If recipient dam information is not recorded for an ET calf, its own performance will not be used in the calculation of its EBVs. The EBVs calculated for the calf will simply be mid-parent values based on the EBVs of its genetic dam and sire. (ii) As BREEDPLAN may only directly compare the performance of ET calves that have been reared by recipient dams of the same breed (depending on the method used to account for the maternal effect of the recipient dam), the choice of recipient dams should be carefully considered before undertaking an embryo transfer program. If recipient dams of mixed breeds are used, the performance of the ET calves will potentially be split into small contemporary groups and significantly inhibit the usefulness of this information to the BREEDPLAN analysis. At a minimum, breeders should try to select recipient dams of the same breed. This will maximise the number of ET calves being analysed in the same contemporary group. Ideally, recipient dams that have been performance recorded previously would be selected. In this situation, BREEDPLAN already has information regarding the maternal attributes of the cow, which enables the maternal effect of the recipient on the performance of the ET calf to be more accurately identified.

Important : If recipient dam information has not been submitted for an ET calf, its EBVs will simply be mid-parent values based on the EBVs of its genetic dam & sire.

How can recipient dam information be submitted to BREEDPLAN? The methods available to record the recipient dam information for your ET calves differ depending on the Breed Society/Association. With Charolais recipient dams can be entered through the online registration portal, Excel spreadsheet or sending the information through to the Charolais Office for data entry.

To further discuss improving Recording Embryo Transfer Calves with BREEDPLAN contact staff at Southern Beef Technology Services (SBTS) Telephone 02 6773 3357 or email catriona@sbts.une.edu.au 33

St Stanislaus’ College, Bathurst, Year 11 students Jack Morrison and Deykyn Haley with the steers, Victor and Chang, from Temana Charolais being prepared for the Victor Chang Charity Steer Auction. Photo: Courtesy Hannah Powe, The Land.

Charolais Steer Raises $20,000 At the Sydney Royal Show a steer is sold to raise money for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. Since 1998 a school in New South Wales is given the task of preparing the steer for the event and auction which Shute Bell auctions. This year St Stanislaus’ College at Bathurst prepared two heavyweight Charolais steers donated by Terry and Maylene Griffin, Temana Charolais, Baradine. The two steers were appropriately named Victor and Chang. With the Sydney Royal cancelled due to Covid 19 a new marketing plan had to be developed. Under unusual circumstances the spirit of the auction and generosity has not been stopped. Robert Worner and John Gray of Schute Bell still managed to raise $20,000 for the Victor Chang Foundation by way of a donation from twelve-time purchaser of the charity steer Paul Ferry. The fund raising will be increased as the steer will be processed and sold through 1888 Certified Butchery in Double Bay, after it has been processed by Breakout River Meats, Cowra. This is a win win for everybody with the students gaining knowledge of the preparation of a steer and a great charity being funded. The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute has more than 250 scientists and 23 laboraties in one location conducting world-class heart research. The result of this steer brings the total for jus the last three years to over $110,000 which is a tremendous effort for all concerned.

Maylene & Terry Griffin, Temana Charolais, Baradine NSW who donated the steer to raise funds for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

Terry and Maylene have been great supporters of youth associated events over a long time frame including watching their children Nicole and Kylie participate and now their grandchildren.

Every Image Counts A great image can greatly assist in marketing your animals. This is easily said and sometimes not so easy to deliver. The old saying “beauty is in the view of the beholder is so true when looking at photographs. Having said that here are some simple tips that can enhance the images that you use for your marketing program. You cannot make a silk purse from a sows ear but you can make a great bull look average. Modern camera phones can take suitable images for print advertising but they do have limitations over distance. If you are taking shots from a distance then a good quality camera becomes useful. Take images at a high resolution, you can always reduce the size of the image but you cannot make it higher resolution lately.

Preparation is Essential

Before you even think about heading down to the paddock have you charged your battery? Taking shots and being ready to take a shot at any time can chew camera batteries. Also ensure you start with a full charge of the battery. Similarly check your storage in your digital device. When taking cattle shots I always start with an empty SD card in my camera and use a large storage card. If you are doing a big day in the photo pens take spare cards to use.

36

July 2020 Charolais Magazine

These two images show the same bull with the right image showing a more favourable extension through the neck. If you are by yourself its only natural for the bull to turn to look at you.

Good images just don’t happen unless you are very lucky. Give yourself plenty of time to get the desired image, some days an animal will not stand the way you want. If your deadline is that day then that is a problem. What if it’s raining the day you need to get the shot. Fresh clipped cattle particularly Charolais are not ideal. If washing the subject that day ensure time to dry before the session starts. The goal should be to take the perfect image every time. The reality is not so easy. If an animal is standing 95% desirable, take the shot, if its digital it doesn’t cost anything. Then you can focus on getting a better image.

Develop a system of identifing which images are what animals. With patterned cattle like Simmentals this is easier. Looking at photographs of fifty white bulls ten hours later can stretch even the best persons memory. I find a notebook to write tag numbers down and then snap a shot of the notebook at the end of that animal works well.

Timing

My preference is to take images in the morning when the side profile is clearly illuminated by the rising sun. Late afternoon also works however watch your shadow is not creeping onto the animal. As the sun rises above the subject underlines can become dark and undefined. An overcast day can work as you do not have shadows to deal with. This allows you the opportunity to shot in any direction compared to a bright sunny day where shadows dictate your options. Darker cattle such as Angus require more lighting then white breeds such as Charolais.

The car in this background is distracting from the calf topline.

Select Your Location

A clean uncluttered background will show your cattle in the best light. The goal should be to have the sun behind the back of the photographer. Avoid broken gates, power poles and assorted vehicles. The image above would look much better without the car in the background. If you are taking light coloured cattle on a sunny day a tree line in the background can help to define toplines from the sky. Ideally a slight incline with the animal standing up the slope of the ground achieves a better result. If you enjoying excellent pasture growth mowing a section to photograph in helps being able to present the whole animal to the viewer. Ideally have the animal separate from their mates so their image is the only animal in the frame unless you are photographing a group. This could be as simple as walking the animal a few metres ahead of the mob. In the image of the crossbred calves below the topline of the front calf is not clearly defined from the second calf in the image.

Know the purpose of the image

Have a clear idea of how the images you are taking are going to be used. Is it a profile shot for a sale catalogue? Are you looking for a group image to be a background in a magazine advert. Knowing how the image is to be used can assist in the composition of the shot.

Get Help

You need someone on the camera and ideally at least one other person to move the animal around and attract their attention when standing well. Having a second person can be valuable when positioning the animal. Having the animals attention with ears forward and head extended assists in enhancing the length of an animal. Explain how you will work the animals so everybody is on the same page. Remember to be nice to the help, they can always walk away! and then your job just got harder.

The visible topline of the rear calf distorts the shape of the front calf. The black cows do however give a great contrast to the Charolais sired calves. The same calf below is clearly defined when taken by itself against its mother

Be Patient

The calmer you remain the calmer the cattle will be. Wherever possible use a setting on your property the cattle are familiar with where they can relax.

Every Image Counts ...cont from page 37

Standing the animal

To achieve a great image of your livestock regardless of species it must be balanced. When an animal is balanced weight is distributed evenly through the structure of the animal giving a more natural look. The bull image to the right shows a sire standing in a balanced position. The four lines overlaid on this image consistently can be placed on good images and only adjusting for size of the animal will line up time and time again. For a side profile photograph I like to position myself just behind the shoulder of the animal. If you take a photograph from too far forward or back the attributes of the animal become distorted. I prefer to take the photograph with the camera at 50% of the animals height. Going too low gives an illusion of height but can also make the jump muscle prominent and therefore distort the topline. The front leg of the animal should be perpendicular to the ground. To give dimension to an animal in a photograph ideally you should be able to see all four legs. Different photographers will have a preference to the set of the front legs. The modern preference is for the near leg to the camera to be slightly in front of the offside front leg. See the heifer picture on the previous page. In my mind this is a minor consideration as long as you can see both legs. With the hind legs we want to lengthen the animal by placing the hind leg nearest the camera further back to show the hindquarter muscle pattern. The opposite hind leg comes forward to keep the hindquarter square. If both hind legs are visually at the same distance from the shoulder the shape of the hindquarter is distorted and shortened. When taking paddocks shots I woud normally walk the animal along applying a little pressure to stop where required. Using animal handling principles incorporating flight zones will enable two handlers to manipulate an animal to stand. Having an animal out in front can help keep the subject matter quieter and more inclined to stop. This may take many attempts, we did mention patience on the previous page. Once the animal has stood in the desired setup the person in front of the animal should endeavour to attract the animals attention. An umbrella or bag on a stick may assist in this.

To Wash or not to Wash

If an animal is to be photographed on a halter then it should be clipped, brushed and clean. Paddock shots can look more natural however there is a limit. Once again knowing the purpose of the image will help determine what is appropriate. The bull above is photographed unled in a paddock setting and has minimal manure, to me this is acceptable. Sand is also visible in the coat which is expected in a paddock shot.

Be Aware

If you are in a mob of cattle that need photographing be aware of other animals in the paddock. Out the corner of an eye you may see one standing perfectly by themselves.

Sometimes ignore the rules

An image can be powerful and sometimes a shot just looks right. You may never reproduce it so just take it. With digital imagery it costs nothing and can be stored away for that time is is useful.

Practise makes Perfect

Rome wasn’t built in a day and practise makes perfect. Take every opportunity to get images when the conditions are right especially of stud sires and donor females that have had a significant impact on your breeding program. These images become a part of your herds history and can be used for websites , marketing progeny or just a pictorial history of your breeding program. Don’t stress if taking pictures is not your thing, there are many professional photographers available to do the job for you. This involves some organisation to fit in with their program. Bottom line images can enhance or destroy your marketing program, always strive to get the best and give justice to your livestock.

Groups add another level of complexity, I find getting the mobs attention then turning and walking away can induce the herd to follow and spread out in a line such as above.

A sire standing well balanced in the paddock. His head is extended with good height in relation to his spine. This image was taken in November when the winter coat is shed.

Taking front on shots, ensure that all feet and legs in the image are square and seen at a natural width.

Moongool Fanmail 8, Interbreed champion cow Sydney Royal 2019. This cow has a lovely udder so placing the calf in front of the cow allows appreciation of the udder and tremendous depth in this female.

Pasture growth is too high to show the shape and depth of this female.

When shotting a group with varying size place the largest animal furtherest from the camera and then place the group towards the smallest. This gives a more uniform group.

Same bull with better neck extension in the right hand photograph.

In rural areas mental health can be a taboo topic. Andrew, Anne and Harris Thompson have opened up their herd and selected the very best to support Black Dog Ride by raising awareness and supporting fundraising. Venturon rarely release females from their program. The most recent was Venturon Gorgeous at the Special Sister Sale in 2009 who went on to win Grand Champion Female at Sydney Royal and breed successfully for DSK Charolais. Venturon have selected a donor that was the calf at foot of the Adelaide Royal grand champion and sired by SVY Grizzly 521C. This poll heifer appeals to all that see her and her pedigree reflects the leading edge of the Venturon herd.

1982 promises more development of the Charolasi breed. During the year some keen member will win for himself the title of “Charolais Promoter of the Year” in the great new competition sponsored by the King Gee Clothing company and Smith Kline Animal Health Products. Have you entered yet? Later in the year the federal office will move from 52 Phillip Street Sydney to our own office premises at Unit 13 Portman Place, North Sydney. ....Let our New Years resolution for 1982 be “ Be a doer, not just an observer or a passenger”. By doing this you will have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Terry and Maylene Griffin, Temana Charolais accompanied by Barry and Pat Boulton of Boulview Charolais last year took a team of their cattle to the Alice Springs Royal Show and came away with grand champion ribbons. It was the first time ever Charolais had been shown “In The Centre” and they attracted a great deal of interest from the local cattle breeders and sales of bulls were part of the reward for the enterprise shown and the courage to break new ground for the breed. Temana returned this year with two bulls making $2,600 each.

A Worthy Ambassador

Oakey Man Top Judge

Late last year Mr David Bondfield, Palgrove Dalveen Qld attended the 17th World Charolais Convention held in Seville Spain during October as a Charolais Society of Australia delegate. David toured the UK and France after the Convention and since returning has taken the time to record his impressions and experiences whilst overseas.

A 24 year old Oakey farmer whose ambition is to become a prominent cattle judge was this week named winner of the Queensland Country Life Darling Downs young judges competition. Gary Noller who helps run 150 Charolais breeders on the Oakey property he operates with father Des and brother Jeff beat six others in the final. He won $160 and a trophy in the contest sponsored by the Country Life. Pictured below Gary Noller, overjudge Bob Freer and second placed Ted Shooter.

The date of joining is the recorded date on the Charolais Society database. There will be some minor discrepancies with herds resigning and rejoining, transfers within families etc. There were also three Charolais Societies in the formative years of the breed and merging these may have resulted in some minor discrepancies in the joining date of members. There are many herds that have been significant in our breeds development but are no longer active Ordinary, Life or Youth members and these herds are not listed. Charolais Acceleration Program [CAPS] Australian Young Sire Progeny Test

Charolais Australia in partnership with Semex Beef are excited to present the first cohort of young sires in the Charolais Acceleration Program [CAPS]. The program is designed to enter a group of highly credentialed young Charolais sires into a managed multi-herd progenytesting program. We believe that Australia has some of the best Charolais Genetics in the world, and it is now time that we identified and recorded these genetics via an official program. This program is an initative to increase the profile of Australian Charolais and acknowledge the quality of genetics bred here. A goal is to increase the usage of our best young sires both here domestically and eventually through export distribution channels. Breeders have been invited to submit young sires with attributes to enhance the Charolais breed here in Australia. In the first cohort three sires have been selected to be available for use through distributors Semex. The young sires have been evaluated for structural integrity, EBV’s and marketability in the industry. The collection, sale and distribution of semen will be managed by Semex Pty Ltd. Breeders can access the CAPS sires at a favourable price by undertaking to submit performance data on the progeny into BREEDPLAN. This offers access to some tremendous young sires at great value and will assist in developing high accuracy in their performance information. Each year a new cohort will be selected to enter the program. Typically there is a time lag before the high performing young sires can be proven to a high accuracy and this program can accelerate proof of the sires being used. Collecting data from these sires from herds in different environments is hugely beneficial. Ideally data will be collected on all traits including scans. For the purchaser of semen they have access to sires that would normally be retained in the breeders herd.

Panama has very quiet nature, and very tidy feet and legs. His Sire Elders Blackjack semen was imported into Australia from Canada in 2016. He is breeding exceptionally well here in Australia and excels in growth, carcase & maternal traits. Panama’s dam was imported from the USA as an embryo and has produced many outstanding progeny for Charnelle Charolais.
