Every year we say the same thing, and it’s only because every year just confirms, there are very few places as special as the Champlain Valley in the summer. Just a ride around the area brings its display. From Mansfield, or Camel’s Hump in the distance to the flowers on display in front of homes, on the porch, in the yard. Everything is vibrant, alive, and beautiful to discover.

Our summer issue has plenty to discover, as well. A look at camping, a guide to local farmers markets, a collage of pictures of some favorites from our staff. Of course, summer isn’t summer without baseball. The Vermont Lake Monsters offer one of the best family experiences in the area, including dancing with Champ, fireworks, and running the bases with the kids. Oh, and did we mention TWENTY-FIVE CENT HOT DOG NIGHTS?! Enough said. We guarantee it’s the best family value around.

We update you on Sail Beyond Cancer VT and the incredible experience it offers those affected by cancer—leaving all of the negatives on the shore, finding time for peace, and gaining tranquility at a time that is so needed.

ROCK OUT WITH YOUR PUP

This dog and family-friendly summer festival is held July 11, 18, and 25 from 5:30pm to 7pm, no tickets required. Going into its third summer, this event features pet industry booths, local artists and musicians, local DJs, and more. It’s a fun way to spend a Tuesday evening.

CAT PUZZLES FEED AND ENTERTAIN

Did you know that cat puzzles exist? Like, puzzles for cats? Well, they do, and they’re getting rave reviews from cat owners everywhere. They’re also referred to as slow feeders because they make the cat work for their treats or food. These puzzles will keep your kitty entertained for hours. They are great for curious indoor cats and will keep them busy!

OLD PETS NEED EXTRA LOVE—AND MAYBE A RAMP

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, pets of an advanced age need a little extra attention. Here are six ways to keep your older pets healthy and happy.

1 Older pets need to visit the vet twice a year for checkups, because senior pets have a greater chance of developing health issues. Too often, the warning signs of a health issue only become obvious when it’s too late, so regular bloodwork and doctors checkups are crucial.

2 Older pets need to eat more easily digestible foods. Softer foods might be necessary or using a brand that specializes in kidney, weight-control, or joint health. Ask your vet what they recommend.

3 Older pets need regular daily exercise, even if you have to force them. Pets benefit

from staying active and moving around. Exercise helps them control their weight, improve circulation, and preserve muscle/ bone mass. Staying active will keep their joints happy, too, and improve their moods.

4 Older pets may require home adaptations such as ramps to get in and out of beds or cars, a litter box with a low entryway, raised food/ water dishes, and padded orthopedic beds. There is a long list of supplies available to meet their needs.

5 Senior pets can show signs of cognitive aging, so challenging them with tasks or games will keep them mentally sharp.

6 Finally, pets that are not neutered or spayed are at a higher risk for breast, testicular, or prostate cancer.

BE AWARE OF PET HEAT STROKE

This summer is shaping up to be a hot one— much hotter than last year—so it is important that you and your furry friends are prepared! Pets can have a heatstroke, too, which happens when your pet’s body temperature rises above the normal range of 100 to 102.2 degrees.

Since our pets have very few sweat glands, they can’t cool off like humans can through sweating. They sweat from their feet and cool down by panting, so they overheat more easily than we do. Even though we may be ok, they might not be.

Watch out for excessive panting, drooling, and difficulty breathing. Vomiting, dry gums, disinterest in food, sunken eyes, general weakness, and sudden incoordination are all signs that your pet has overdone it outside and needs some cooling assistance. They may be too happy playing to realize that they need to stop.

During these hot summer months, it is always important for your pets to have access to fresh, clean water. Kiddie pools, ice cubes, ice packs, frozen treats, fans, and sprinklers are great ways to keep your pets from overheating outside. Like kids, they need us to keep an eye on them and be on the lookout for signs that they are overdoing it.

Circus Smirkus is celebrating its 36th anniversary in style with the 2023 Big Top Tour: A Midsummer Night’s Circus. This exquisite acrobatic adaptation of

Shakespeare’s beloved comedy will leave you awe-inspired and utterly enchanted.

The Circus Smirkus Big Top Tour—on the road July 1 through August 19—features a cast of 30 young circus artists who will perform 63 shows in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine. The shows feature aerial acts, clowns, contortionists and more, all set to live music, under a beautiful big top tent.

The mission of Smirkus is simple in theory and thoughtfully executed in practice: “To promote the skills, culture, and traditions of the traveling circus, and to inspire youth to engage in life-changing adventures in the circus arts.” The organization’s three programs—School Residencies, Smirkus Camp, and the Big Top Tour—blend the best of circus tradition and contemporary practice to create immersive experiences that challenge kids to perform and live to the very best of their abilities.

raises money for scholarships to provide youth who might not otherwise be able to attend, the opportunity to shine in the Smirkus ring. Rachel chiffer, interim co-e ecutive director, said, “We never want money to be a factor for kids dreaming to be a part of Circus Smirkus, and our goal is to share the Smirkus magic with as many children and youth as possible. This year, we were able to award over $80,000 in scholarships, and we hope to offer even more in the future as we grow our outreach and partnership programs.”

Sleepaway summer camp sessions at the campus in scenic Greensboro, Vermont, come in a range of offerings. hildren as young as five can do one-day, get-your-feet-wet e periences. There are one-, two-, three- and five-week camps specializing in the whole range of circus pursuits including acrobatics, aerials, clowning, balance, and juggling. For many campers, Smirkus Camp is a home away from home, where they are celebrated for being themselves. In all, over 400 campers participate each summer in a variety of programs that range in level from beginner to advanced. Although most of the camps are open to all skill levels, advanced sessions require a video audition for placement.

JOINING THE CIRCUS

When it comes to securing a spot in The Big Top Tour, the process becomes a bit more involved. The audition requires both a written application and recorded audition. After review by the tour s directorial staff, the pool is reduced to 45 performers who are then invited to participate in a second-round audition. Auditionees then showcase a thematic act and participate in skills assessment workshops, after which 30 troupers are selected for the final cast. This season’s troupe comprises youth from 12 states. After the troupers’ selection has been finali ed, the show script is created over the winter months, and act creation and rehearsals take place onsite in Greensboro during three weeks in June. Then the troupers hit the road for seven weeks in which two-hour shows are performed twice daily.

The amazing performances that audiences enjoy require numerous helping hands and behind-the-scenes dedication to e ecute. The tour includes 80 people—the crew, performers, counselors, and coaches. It takes eight hours to set up the big top and the backstage and concession tents, and to prepare and organize

200 costume pieces, 100 props, 70 spotlights, and a mile of electrical cable. But ultimately, all this work is worth it for those involved.

Interim Co-Executive Director Joshua Shack said, “We are very excited about this year’s show. We have an amazing group of young performers full of enthusiasm and top-notch skills. Our creative team, both new and returning, come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and all are extraordinarily talented. Each year, after months of planning, we spend three weeks creating an original, inspiring production from scratch. We’ve been planning this tour since the fall, and I can’t wait to see this year s troupe and staff in action.

THE SMIRKUS IMPACT AND ALUMNI SUCCESS

So what’s next for kids who participate in the camps or tour?

Many alumni pursue careers in the circus arts, often attending prestigious circus colleges around the world. Graduates have performed with Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, Big Apple Circus, Cirque Mechanics, Les 7 Doigts, as well as other international touring companies. You’ve seen Smirkus alumni in movies, on commercials, and on variety shows like America’s Got Talent. Smirkus alumni have even been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The skills acquired at Smirkus, including confidence, team building, and communication, have tremendous crossover in a variety of careers, serving to benefit even those who do not continue on a circus-related career path. The Smirkus experience celebrates participants for exactly who they are, far from the pressures and expectations of family, peers, and school.

“Last year we celebrated our 35th anniversary with a triumphant return of the Big Top Tour after a two-year hiatus, hack said. “This year, we are thrilled to have more towns on the route again, including a few new venues. Smirkus is rooted in tradition, but one of the biggest circus traditions is innovation, and creating new traditions. We are excited to continue to deliver the magic that we are known for, in both familiar and new ways.

Vermont Lake Monsters

2023 season kicks off!

With summer in full swing, the Vermont Lake Monsters baseball team is looking forward to a festive and competitive season.

Previously a minor league team linked to the Oakland Athletics, the Monsters saw big changes in 0 0. Rebounding off half-filled bleachers due to OV -19 capacity measures and a restructuring among Minor League Baseball that saw 42 teams dropped, the future of the Monsters was uncertain going into 0 1. To save the franchise and keep the team in Burlington, founder of RockFence Capital and veteran baseball impresario Chris English purchased it.

From there, the team joined the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) and welcomed new head coach Pete Wilk. With just a month and a half to relaunch at the start of the 0 1 season, the team was short on players, time, and resources, yet

bootstrapped their way through the ranks to solidify their talent in the FCBL with a championship win.

“It was pretty magical,” said C. J. Knudsen, senior vice president of the Vermont Lake Monsters. “Everyone was really excited, and the community is ultimately the one that won.”

HIGH-LEVEL PLAY

The FCBL has eight teams, four in Massachusetts, two in Connecticut, and one each in New Hampshire and Vermont. Players come from around the country for a 64game summer season and are hosted by local families. With scouts following and watching the players, the F B offers the opportunity for high-level play and the potential to get drafted to the big league.

Home runs and high fives are commonplace at a Lake Monsters game.

“There are a ton of scouts following and watching the players perform,” said C. J. “This season gets players used to playing pro baseball and gets the body acclimated to playing a lot of games.”

The Vermont Lake Monsters 2023 team roster has close to 40 players from schools like Harvard, Columbia, and Pepperdine. The recruiting is done by head coach Wilk and Director of Baseball Operations Morgan Brown, who draw on their close relationships with schools across the country.

“The most important thing we look for is the uality of people off the field first, . . said of the recruiting process. “If they can play baseball, that’s great.”

C. J. noted they are having to turn players away as the caliber of play, the strength of the team, and the quality of summer life in Burlington become more widely recognized.

“The roster has been full and set since last September,” he said. “Word is out that Burlington is the place to be and play for the summer.”

The players took to the field with a home opener on May 24. Centennial Field hosted its first baseball game in 190 and today serves as the home field for the Vermont ake Monsters. t seats up to , 15 spectators and regularly fills up during the Monsters’ summer season with excited fans eager to support the young players.

FIREWORKS AND HOT DOGS

“The energy in the park is so great, you can almost taste it,” said C. J. “It’s magical, and we’re so lucky to be so supported.”

Current renovations to the ballpark include four new field bo seats going in, and there are no shortage of promotions all summer long to get people out to en oy a game. Four post-game firework shows are slated for 0 3, along with three ot og ysteria nights, which feature 5 cent hot dogs and sell close to 10,000 dogs over the course of one game. On ednesdays, kids eat free, and on undays, kids receive a free baseball to play catch on the field after the game. Tuesday hosts senior night with half off reserved tickets along with a free soft drink.

And while many people come for the baseball, they may stay for the top-notch food and beer.

In addition to providing an entertaining, family-friendly night out, the administrative team for the Monsters puts focus on supporting local businesses with food and beverage purveyors from around the area.

“In Vermont, we like to think we have some of the best beer in the country,” C. J. said proudly.

Giving tap presence to local breweries, beers available at the ballpark include Fiddlehead, 14th Star, Zero Gravity, Von Trapp, Good Measure, and Citizen Cider to name a few.

“People love having local beer that was maybe brewed just a mile from the ballpark, and we like to provide access to unbelievable beers,” he said. “People visiting from out of state are always blown away by the selection.”

And as many might agree, one of the perfect pairings for great beer is great pizza. To provide quality pizza to fans, the organization installed a custom-made fire oven for fresh, homemade pizzas available at every game.

The other treasure of the Vermont Lake Monsters is the mascot himself—Champ, the legendary Lake Champlain monster who has been the mascot since 1994. Champ has received worldwide acclaim over the years and is just as popular as the players themselves.

With high-quality food and beer, a legendary mascot, a new, exciting level of play, and events all summer long, a Vermont ake Monsters game offers something for everyone. Adding even more is the team’s presence in the community and its importance to the state at large.

Sail Beyond Cancer VT

Provides TRANQUILITY to cancer patients

“This is a life-extending opportunity.” These are the words of South Burlington resident Steve Milizia, a cancer warrior whose current treatments are so toxic and radioactive that he must remain isolated for 48 hours following each session.

The restorative moments that perpetually lift up Milizia and his family are memories of sailing with Sail Beyond Cancer VT (SBC VT), whose community-based mission on Lake Champlain honors those challenged by cancer by harnessing the healing powers of wind, water, and sail.

‘MAGICAL’ MOMENTS

Local resident and cancer survivor, Captain Suzanne Snyder, founded the organization. This season, Sail Beyond Cancer has acquired a dedicated vessel, Tranquility, a 42-foot 1996 Catalina that is led by local volunteer captains and crews. Anyone undergoing treatment for cancer has the opportunity to sail with up to six members of their family and/or friends for a three-hour sail on Lake Champlain.

CAMP SKYLAND

Camp Skyland in South Hero overlooks Lake Champlain. “My husband’s great grandmother, Mabel Norton, started it in 1927. We are the fourth generation to run the campground,” said Shira Arnold. “It is right on the lake and has beach access.

A lot of our campers are third and fourth generation. People enjoy the peace and quiet. We are at the end of the island. At the end of the world.” Skyland is small, family-oriented, and rustic. People enjoy swimming and kayaking. Some campers have biked from Burlington. There is a

recreation building featuring activities such as ping-pong and indoor and outdoor games that are available to borrow.

Campers can select from three options: rustic cabins in two sizes, grassy campsites for tents or small trailers with no hookups, and a few trailer sites for trailers under 24 feet.

Visitors to Camp Skyland enjoy beautiful sunsets.

Camp Skyland’s Cliffside Cabins overlooking Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains sleep two to four persons in one room with private bathrooms. Adding to the camaraderie of the uaint cabin row is a group fire pit with panoramic views of sunrise and sunset.

In Northern Vermont, Smugglers’ Notch State Park Campground is situated in the heart of the natural beauty of Stowe. The area, known for the historic notch once frequented by smugglers, offers a wide variety of activities such as hiking, biking, bouldering, ice climbing, and cave exploring. The campground, open from May 19 to October 16, includes 20 tent and 14 leanto sites, most of them walk-in with no vehicle access. In Central Vermont, Coolidge State Park is located in the developed recreation centerpiece of the 21,500-acre Calvin Coolidge State Forest, named for the 30th US president. Open from May 26 to the second Monday in October, the campground has 26 tent/RV sites and 36 lean-to rustic hillside sites known for sweeping views of the Black River Valley and the Green Mountains. Further south in Arlington, Vermont, is Camping on the Battenkill, a 35-acre campground accessing the Battenkill and Roaring Branch Rivers. The quiet, natureoriented property features swimming in the swimming hole, fishing, canoeing, tubing, hiking, touring neighboring covered bridges, and enjoying the games room. Camping sites range from 48 in hardwoods to 37 in partially wooded areas and 18 along the open field near the playground. Options are available for RVs and tents. Keeler Bay Campground & Marina is located in South Hero. The nine-acre campground, open from May 1 to October 15, has 900 feet of shoreline on Lake Champlain. There are 24 sites for tents and RV full hookup. Beautiful views of the lake, along with recreational amenities including a large open field, make this a special place for campers.
