from the publisher A Resolution Reminder Wow! What a year it has been. As I attended my son’s graduation from the University of Georgia last Saturday, I was inspired by the words of the ceremony honor grad speaker. Very simply put, the message to the young adults was to go out and really live life. Don’t just go out there, get a job, make money and acquire things. He said it is important to make sure the life you live is worth telling in a story. The way to make sure you live a life that is rich enough to make into a movie or write as a story is to touch the lives of others in a meaningful way. It seems easy enough, but as we go through the daily grind we sometimes forget this simple and pure nugget of wisdom. So maybe we need to remember as we begin the New Year, instead of the standard lose weight, exercise more resolution, we can first resolve to do good for others. A little kindness and positive energy will help us all to make 2012 the Best year ever. All the best

My Best List GameDay Girl - these super-soft, vintage-style shirts are great for young girls and women of all ages. The GameDay Girl brand promotes the attitude and spirit in our daughters, in our mothers, in our sisters and in our friends…the spirit that lives in all of us. The shirts represent sports and active living while promoting patience, passion and strength through inspirational messages printed on them. $44 Details: Available locally by contacting Jennifer at (678) 778-7098 or visit www.gamedaygirl.com My Face Case - A while ago I had a jewelry bag in this design and was thrilled to find a makeup bag like this. It is designed as a big circle that closes with a drawstring. When you open it, the bag lays flat and has lots of different, clear pockets for organizing makeup and toiletries. I love it because you can easily see what you have without having to dig into a black hole. Great for the gym or travel. $29 Details: (404) 569-9190, www.giftngreen.com CO2 Snowball Peel/Facial - I recently had this skin treatment done by Jill Barron at Gardner Dermatology & Med Spa. I could immediately feel and see the difference. Skinceuticals Micropeel: A three-step exfoliation procedure designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation, laxity, dullness, and skin imperfections, with little or no down time. This peel can be performed every two weeks when skin correction is desired. The three steps are: Step 1. Dermaplaning - The dermaplaning tool exfoliates to remove dead skin and facial hair and allows for better penetration of the chemical solution. Step 2. Chemical Exfoliation - Chemical solution is chosen based on each individual patient’s skin and their needs. Step 3. CO2 Cryogenic Therapy - Liquid Co2 is molded into a “snow” ball, wrapped in gauze and then dipped into acetone. The “slush” is then lightly swiped over the face. Cryotherapy has been used in dermatology for more than 25 years. The CO2 slush feels great, is anti-inflammatory and increases cell

turnover. With multiple treatments, the skin becomes more luminous and radiant from smoother texture and increased cell turnover. Details: Gardner Dermatology & Med Spa, www.gardnerdermatology.com, (770) 952-2100 ext 3

Q

Do I need to treat my heartburn?

Yes you do. Heartburn is most commonly caused by acid refluxing up from the stomach into the esophagus. The esophagus cannot tolerate the exposure to acid. This results in inflammation and injury to the esophagus. As it heals, scarring can occur that develops into a stricture or narrowing of the esophagus making it difficult to impossible to swallow food. In more severe cases, a condition called Barrett’s esophagus can develop. Barrett’s is known as a precancerous condition and can lead to esophageal adenocarcinoma. So, don’t ignore your ongoing heartburn. Seek your doctor’s advice and treatment accordingly.

I am diabetic. What can I do to protect my eyes?

Diabetes is a very common medical problem affecting millions of Americans. Diabetes causes damage to many organ systems, including the eyes. Without proper care, diabetes can result in blindness. The single most important way diabetics can protect their eyes (and also kidneys, heart, and nervous system) is to monitor and control blood glucose levels. Having regular eye checks and seeing a general physician familiar with the care of diabetic patients is also important.

If I am still having regular cycles as I get older does that mean I am still fertile?

Regular cycles are a sign that your reproductive system is functioning properly but do not predict fertility. The chances of successful conception start diminishing dramatically as early as one’s mid-20s compared to peak fertility rates at younger ages. By the mid-30s that chance has fallen by at least half and by age 40 to less than half of that. Women need to be aware of this normal, built-in decline as they plan for their futures. Q

In addition to limiting physical activities, what else should a child who has experienced a concussion refrain from doing?

A child who has experienced a concussion requires both physical and cognitive rest. Cognitive rest is a period where “mental activity” is limited. Studies have shown that increased mental activity may hamper the brain’s recovery from concussions. Cognitive rest includes limiting academic and other activities that require concentration, such as watching television, texting, using a computer and video game time. Activities like reading and studying can be equally as stressful to the recovering brain as premature return to sport and play.

How do I talk to my kids about weight?

The childhood obesity epidemic has impacted everyone, and we need to open discussions with our kids about this issue. The best way to approach this topic is to focus on health, not weight. Ask your children how they feel about their health and habits. Help them realize that health and happiness are connected and that adopting healthy habits will help them achieve their appropriate weight. Focus on adding positives to their lives. Increasing fruit and vegetable intake, playing, being more active Stephanie Walsh, MD and reducing consumption of sugary drinks are good starting points. Be positive and be a good Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta role model— your kids will follow!

bestfun Explore new ways to get more out of life Back at the Beach By Jeyme Colodne Traditional beachside vacations conjure images of playing in the surf, strolling on the hot sand and basking in the sun. While this can be a fun and relaxing way to spend a summer day, the peaceful tranquility of a beachside stroll during the crisp fall weather isn’t out of the question. Spending time on Tybee Island, located just a few minutes from Savannah, offers up more than just fun in the sun. During my stay there, I was surprised to discover that I could enjoy this seaside town during cooler weather just as much as during warmer times. One of the best ways to enjoy the crisp salt air is on Captain Mike’s dolphin tours during the day, or on a romantic cruise at sunset.

Once the sun goes down, there is no better place for seafood than The Crab Shack. Complete with fresh seafood, a rustic outdoor dining area and a place to dock your boat should you want to visit from the water, this restaurant has a laid back atmosphere anyone could appreciate. One of my favorite menu items would have to be the low country boil, which features sweet shrimp, corn, sausage and potatoes. Top off the evening with a walk on the pier and let the cool sea air revitalize you for the next day’s adventure. Join Chip Coffey, psychic medium from the A&E Channel’s “Paranormal State” and Joe Chin from Syfy Channel’s “Ghost Hunters International” on January 13 for a tour you are sure to remember. There will be an autograph session, psychic readings and a live ghost hunt at Rhodes Hall with the stars from 5 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. To learn more about the hall’s history during a tamer tour, make sure to call ahead for their schedule.

Foodies can enjoy spending time with some of the best chefs in the South at the Celebrity Chef Tour at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta on Friday, February 3. Benefiting the James Beard Foundation and hosted by Park 75 Executive Chef Robert Gerstenecker, this event will feature a cocktail party at Park 75 Lounge followed by a seven-course menu. Each course will be paired with wine to highlight the talent of one chef.

bestcause Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation – Atlanta Chapter Putting in the time to find a cure By Sarah E. King Imagine a chronic disease that spans all age groups and can develop at any time in your life. It can cause fever, abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, and sometimes bleeding. This is a daily reality for 1.4 million Americans who live with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with that number split evenly into Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Currently there is no cure however, the non-profit, volunteerdriven Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) dedicates time, research and funding every day to finding one. “The ultimate goal is to find a way for our patients to be in permanent remission,” says Mary Ball of the CCFA’s Atlanta chapter. “The CCFA is funding $25 million this year, and will for every year after. Our efforts will remain as aggressive and consistent as ever.”

The Annual Torch Gala, hosted by the CCFA Georgia Chapter, seeks to celebrate those individuals and corporations who display a history of commitment and service to finding a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The dinner dance is the largest single fundraiser of the year for the Georgia Chapter, spanning 21 years. To date, it has raised over $5.1 million.

“I can honestly say I love my job. I do this to make sure that awareness about these diseases is spread, so no one has to get this diagnosis and feel the same sense of hopelessness and fear that my family felt when my dad was first diagnosed,” Ball says. “I work to make sure those with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis do not feel alone, and that they have the support and education they need to successfully manage their disease.” The Atlanta chapter of CCFA offers support groups throughout the state, as well as a weeklong summer camp called Camp Oasis, for children ages seven to 17 with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Annual patient education programs in Atlanta, Savannah, Columbus and Macon offer question and answer sessions with doctors in the field, information on treatment options and the latest advances toward finding a cure. In addition to this, there are many ways to volunteer with the Atlanta group. Through the Take Steps Walks in Atlanta, Macon and Savannah, volunteers can help raise funds for research, support and education programs. The Team Challenge Half Marathon program allows you to run or walk 13.1 miles, or train for a triathlon while helping to find a cure. “Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are very painful, embarrassing and debilitating diseases that affect children as young as nine months old all the way through adulthood,” Ball says. “The support and education programs that are offered help patients and their families manage this together. The research that CCFA is currently doing will not only benefit our patients, but people affected by other autoimmune diseases such as lupus, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis.” For more information, or to find out ways you can support CCFA and the Atlanta chapter, visit www.ccfa.org or www.ccfageorgia.blogspot.com.

This year’s gala, held January 28 at the InterContinental Buckhead in Atlanta, will honor Citizens of the Year Mr. and Mrs. Jay Davis, and Mr. Richard Davis. For more information, contact Amy Suiter, Development Manager for the Georgia Chapter, at asuiter@ccfa.org.

YOUR DIGESTIVE HEALTH

BY TAYLOR ARNOLD

Chances are, you’ve experienced digestive issues at some point in your life. From common problems like gas and bloating to more serious conditions like ulcers and gallstones. These ailments can run the gamut from being uncomfortable to downright painful. The good news is you can alleviate (and often eliminate) these symptoms with a combination of good nutrition and the right information. Read on as we break down a range of gastric issues and diseases and ask the experts to weigh in on the latest advancements surrounding your digestive health.

DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS: What are they, and how are they managed? Indigestion

The symptoms of indigestion may include: Gas • Nausea • Acidic taste • Growling stomach Abdominal pain • Burning in the stomach Also called dyspepsia, indigestion is that feeling of fullness or discomfort during or after a meal. “Indigestion is one of the most common symptoms we see in gastroenterology,” says Dr. Preston Stewart, gastroenterologist at Digestive Healthcare of Georgia. “We always start by evaluating your diet. There are a number of triggers like fatty foods, citrus, peppermint, chocolate, alcohol and caffeinated beverages. There are also a number of over-the-counter-medicines that can cause indigestion, and a common category is the NSAIDs. This includes Ibuprofen, Aleve and Advil. These can contribute to injury to the upper GI tract.” A person’s risk for indigestion increases with alcohol consumption, as well as the use of drugs like aspirin that may irritate the stomach. If the indigestion doesn’t improve after eliminating these triggers, your doctor may prescribe medications. But if indigestion is accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or pain radiating to the jaw, neck or arm, seek medical attention immediately.

Acid Reflux (Heartburn)

The symptoms of acid reflux may include: Heartburn • Chest pains • Nausea • Regurgitation Heartburn is often used interchangeably with acid reflux, and it is the symptom you feel when acid splashes up and out of the stomach and irritates the esophagus. About 10 percent of Americans experience heartburn on a daily basis, and up to 50 percent of women experience it while pregnant. A common cause of this problem is too much food in the stomach. Foods high in fat and oil can lead to heartburn, as well as certain medications. Stress can also be a trigger because it increases the acid production that causes heartburn. Generally speaking, heartburn is caused by too much pressure on the stomach, which is why obese people and pregnant women experience this condition. Most doctors will recommend antacids for infrequent heartburn, and drugs like Prevacid, Prilosec, or Nexium for chronic episodes. Occasional heartburn isn’t dangerous, but chronic heartburn can indicate serious problems and can develop into gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). “More serious conditions such as cancer may mimic symptoms of heartburn,” says Dr. Tanvi Dhere, assistant professor of the division of digestive diseases at Emory University. “You should seek medical attention if your symptoms do not improve with the use of over the counter antacids, you are losing weight unexpectedly, you have difficulty swallowing, or you develop dark, tarry appearing stools. You should also consult with your physician if you have a strong family history of esophageal or gastric cancer.”

Lactose Intolerance

The symptoms of lactose intolerance may include: Abdominal pain • Abdominal bloating • Gas • Diarrhea • Nausea Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and other dairy products. Symptoms typically occur 30 minutes to two hours after eating or drinking milk products, and while this condition isn’t dangerous, it can be very uncomfortable. Children can be lactose intolerant, but it is more likely to develop in adulthood as our bodies begin to produce less lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose. While it isn’t possible to outgrow this condition, it is manageable with diet. “Depending on severity, some people with lactose intolerance are able to consume up to 10 grams of lactose a day,” says Megan Mohannadione, clinical dietician at Emory Bariatric Center. “Most people also do well with lower-lactose dairy foods such as hard and soft cheeses, yogurt, buttermilk and goat’s milk. If you can’t tolerate any kind of dairy, use soymilk and be sure to eat a variety of green, leafy vegetables and salmon for calcium and vitamin D.”

Peptic Ulcers

The symptoms of peptic ulcers may include: Burning pain felt anywhere from your stomach up to your chest Vomiting of blood • Dark blood in stool • Nausea • Appetite changes Unexplained weight loss Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of your esophagus, stomach and the upper portion of your small intestine. “The two most common causes of peptic ulcers are NSAIDs and/or bacterial infections,” Dr. Stewart says. “First, we want to remove the offending agent, so your doctor will likely tell you to stop taking aspirin. We diagnose peptic ulcers with an upper endoscopy or a barium swallow test so the radiologist can see the outline of the stomach.” While smoking and excess alcohol consumption can increase your risk for peptic ulcers, it is a myth that they are caused by stress. “Stress can cause pain and indigestion that can feel like an ulcer,” he says. “But there is not a direct link between ulcers and emotional stress.” If your peptic ulcer wasn’t caused by aspirin or other pain relievers, your doctor will put you on antibiotics or acid-reducing medications to relieve the pain and allow your ulcer to heal. This treatment is usually successful, but if your symptoms continue, your doctor may recommend an endoscopy to rule out other possible causes for your peptic ulcers.

THE SCOOP ON POOP

The next time you use the bathroom, consider taking a look before you flush. Your waste products, especially your stool, can tell you a lot about your health. The color, consistency and shape are all indicators of what’s going on inside your body and may serve as warning signs for more serious illnesses.

COLOR

CONSISTENCY/SHAPE

Dr. Oz’s Poop Color Chart gives suggestions as to what each color could mean: • Brown – Normal • Red – Lower gastrointestinal bleeding • Green – Crohn’s disease • Yellowish – gallbladder disease • Gray/White – pancreatitis • Black – upper gastrointestinal bleeding

Cracks, pellet-like forms and watery consistency are all things to look out for in your stool. Too much water might indicate a food allergy while the pellets might mean you are not getting enough fiber.

If you are noticing inconsistency in your stool, you should make note of it and go see your doctor. For more information, visit www.doctoroz.com.

NOT QUITE SO YOUNG, BUT STILL ACTIVE? DON’T LET SORE KNEES SLOW YOU DOWN.

Diverticulitis

The symptoms of diverticulitis may include: Sudden pain in the lower abdomen • Change in bowel habits • Fever Abdominal tenderness • Nausea and vomiting • Constipation • Diarrhea Diverticulitis occurs when small sacs or pouches of the inner lining of the intestine (called diverticulosis) become inflamed or infected, resulting in cramping, bloating or nausea and vomiting. This condition is most common in people over age 60, and most doctors will agree that a low-fiber diet is a contributor. Treatment of diverticulitis depends on the severity of your symptoms, but most of the time your doctor will recommend rest, a heating pad for your belly and possibly pain medications or antibiotics. Once the symptoms subside, you’ll need to maintain a high fiber diet and limit coffee, tea and alcohol, which can make constipation worse. “While diverticulitis may recur, it generally is not a chronic condition in the sense of being ever present, constantly inflamed or infected,” says Dr. David Weinstein, gastroenterologist at Saint Joseph’s Hospital. “It is important to understand that, with the exception of some new studies suggesting that aspirin and NSAID products may increase the risk of diverticular bleeding and diverticulitis, both events cannot be prevented. It is an old wives’ tail that peanuts, and popcorn will cause a diverticular complication.”

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

The symptoms of GERD may include: A burning sensation in your chest • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid Dry cough • Chronic sore throat • Chest pain Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid flows back into your esophagus. “Although the terms GERD and heartburn are often used interchangeably, heartburn is actually a symptom of GERD,” says Dr. Rodney Harris, chief of gastroenterology for Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. “Complications of GERD include esophageal stricture, which is the narrowing or tightening of the esophagus, as well as gastrointestinal bleeding, adult onset asthma and difficulty swallowing foods.”

Most people can manage the discomfort of heartburn with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications, but for people with GERD, these remedies may offer only temporary relief. “There are two classes of medication containing acid-blocking agents that have been used for the past 25 years to treat GERD,” Dr. Harris explains. “Histamine receptor blockers, such as Ranitidine and Famotidine, work fairly well for patients who experience symptoms two to three times per week. For those with more severe symptoms, the use of the proton pump inhibitors, such as Prevacid, work well to block most of the acid production.”

Gallstones

The symptoms of gallstones may include: Sudden pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen • Sudden pain in the center of the abdomen, just below the breastbone • Back pain between the shoulder blades Gallstones are hard, pebble-like deposits that form inside the gallbladder. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. “Classic symptoms for gallstones are episodic discomfort in the upper right abdomen,” Dr. Stewart says. “It typically comes on suddenly and over an hour or two, then it will dissipate.” www.bestselfconnect.com

Many people with gallstones have never had symptoms, and the chance of symptoms or complications from gallstones is low. They are often found during a routine x-ray, abdominal surgery, or other medical procedure. However, if a large stone blocks either the cystic duct or common bile duct, you may have a cramping pain in the middle to right upper abdomen. In general, patients who have symptoms will need surgery either right away, or after a short period of time. But the good news is, nearly all patients who have gallbladder surgery won’t have symptoms again.

Crohn’s & Colitis

Both colitis and Crohn’s disease are classified as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). This is the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Colitis is a general term for a number of causes that result in swelling of the large intestine. Crohn’s is a chronic disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract, resulting in pain that can make the intestines empty frequently, causing diarrhea. Crohn’s disease can be difficult to diagnose, as the symptoms are very similar to other digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcerative colitis. “Diarrhea and abdominal pain may be seen in both diseases,” says Dr. Dhere. “However, patients with inflammatory bowel disease may experience unexpected weight loss, loss of appetite, rectal bleeding, or periodic fevers, which are not commonly seen in IBS patients.”

Your Digestive Health: The Prognosis

While digestive issues differ from person to person, medical experts agree that your diet has everything to do with your digestive health. “The digestive tract is the barrier between our environment and what goes into our bodies,” says Dr. Edward Lin, director of Emory Gastroesophageal Treatment Center. “So much happens at this barrier that protects us from toxins, helps breakdown otherwise indigestible food into absorbable nutrients, sends signals to other parts of your body, and finally flushes out unwanted material. Even though the digestive tract is very resilient, it should not be neglected.”

TRAINERS WITH HEART

n NBC’s “The Biggest Loser’s” Thanksgiving special, the show’s newest trainer Dolvett Quince was asked what it felt like to be a part of something as amazing as transforming people’s lives. Since Quince has helped countless people lose weight during his career as a personal trainer, his answer was simple and heartfelt. “I can’t think of a better job. When you take someone from doubt to belief in themselves, I think that is one of the most amazing jobs on the planet.” If you tuned in this past season to see contestants compete to lose pounds on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” then you’ve no doubt seen Quince in action. Most of the contestants on his team have agreed that he is the nicest person outside of the gym, but once they begin working out with him, he takes on a militaristic likeness, shouting his encouraging words and urging his team not to give up. “How bad do you want it?” he’ll exclaim. And it seems to work, as they all push themselves harder and respond to his motivation. Quince has always taken his job seriously. Even before he received that career changing call from the producers of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” he was the owner of his own gym in Buckhead and used his positive attitude and training skills to help people get healthy. Quince has always been active, playing basketball and studying martial arts, however, only in the last 12 years has he taken his love of exercise to another level.

TRAINERS WITH HEART

Dolvett Quince encourages the contestants on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.”

“My passion (for training) first started while I was working at the YMCA over on Ashford Dunwoody,” he explains. “I just started working there when someone (who worked there) approached me and asked me if I’d ever been certified as a trainer. They thought I had a great rapport with people and that I had a good psyche and said it just made sense, so I got certified and I kept building from there.” Quince went from a corporate trainer to an independent contractor, and today he owns his own training facility, Body Sculptor Inc., along with his own staff of trainers. He formed Body Sculptor Inc. on his own and turned it into a successful business, but it really started booming in 2001 as he began to receive more high profile celebrity clientele. “When I started training my good friend Bert Weiss from The Bert Show, he started talking about me on the air,” he recalls. “I was doing well on my own, averaging two new clients a week. When Bert started talking about me transforming his body, my business tripled.” Quince was in high demand with local people as well as celebrities like Justin Bieber, Boris Kodjoe and Michael Jai White, just to name a few. “I take a lot of pride in what I do and have a lot of attention to detail. I’m very involved with the development of my client, and I’m not distracted,” Quince explains. “I don’t just look at myself as a trainer, I look at myself as a transformer. If someone hires me, I’m going to take them from where they are to where they should be.” When Quince realized he would not have enough time to dedicate to all of his new clients, he decided to teach others to train “the Body Sculptor way” as he built up his team. “I couldn’t be happier with the team of trainers I have,” he says. “They are as passionate about fitness as I am.” When Quince received a call from the producers of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” he knew leaving his Buckhead-based business behind to go to www.bestselfconnect.com

12:54:55 PM Dolvett.indd 38197.12.1.indd 2 35

California where the show is filmed would be difficult. But he also had a lot of faith in his team to hold down the fort. Since he had to split his time between the west coast and Atlanta, having his team in place made the transition easier. Quince believes that many factors led him to have the opportunity to join the reality show. “I think building my career and starting to train celebrities, as well as having a private studio in Buckhead - all of that organically led me to this road.” Although this is his first season on the show, Quince is no stranger to pushing people to achieve their goals. He admits one of the most challenging aspects of being on the show is being away from his studio. But he is not one to shy away from a challenge or to forget the people whose lives he’s touched along the way. “I remember I was working at the gym in Buckhead and there was this young lady who was getting married and I helped her lose 30 pounds and she fit into her wedding dress,” he recalls. “She came to me in tears handed me a gift card and a gift, and said ‘Because of you, I’m going to have the best day of my life.’ I knew in that moment I’m doing what I’m supposed to do.” Whether training people on TV or in his own gym, Quince is someone who helps people with equal parts passion and tenacity. He marks his successes not only by his personal achievements, but also by the achievements of those whose lives he has impacted. Through it all, his positive attitude and passion has never changed. On NBC’s “The Biggest Loser’s” Thanksgiving special, Quince’s closing remarks were simple, yet rang true. “We all have insecurities and doubt ourselves,” he said. “We don’t believe day-to-day that we’re the best we can be, but if I can be a tool to help someone both physically and mentally get to that space – then I love what I do.” BEST SELF ATLANTA

TRAINERS WITH HEART

More from Dolvett Quince Where did you grow up and how long have you lived in Atlanta? I’ve been in Atlanta for over 13 years now, but I’m originally from Connecticut. How do you keep people motivated? I advise people – don’t be hopeful with your workout, be specific, write things down – write down what your plan is and create a schedule. Maximize your time. If someone could do one thing to begin their journey toward healthier living, what would that first step be? Change your portion sizes and swap them out for clean options of food. Take away bad options. How can people jumpstart their healthy lives in the new year? My suggestion is clean out your cabinets and your refrigerator. Choose an entire month – let’s say January – to make a complete cleansing of your kitchen. If you’re eating chocolate, replace it with fruit. If you’re eating mashed potatoes, replace it with mashed cauliflower. You can still eat and be full, but be more selective. What qualities do you have that have helped make you successful? My confidence. Someone said to me once, “You have the ability – no matter who you’re training – to make anyone feel comfortable in their own skin,” and I think that is a God-given talent. What charitable events are you involved with? We started our first annual Body Sculptor food drive through the holidays for homeless shelters, so I’m very excited about that. Who have been your biggest influences? Ambitious people. People like Oprah Winfrey and Jay-Z who have built something out of nothing. I’m so inspired by businessmen and women who create jobs for other people. What advice would you offer people who want to start their own business? Stay consistent in your pursuit. Along the way there’s going to be a lot of people who tell you, you can’t do it, but there is a way to do it, so don’t be ashamed to ask for help. There are so many people in front of you who have gone down this pathway before you. It’s ok to ask for help. Don’t ever, ever, ever give up on your dream. Make it a reality through your words, deeds and actions. What is an obstacle you’ve had to overcome in your life to get to where you are today? I think any kind of success breeds envy. I had approached people in my industry and asked them about how to open a gym, tried to get advice from them. and they laughed and asked me why I would want to do that and told me I was fine where I was. A few years later I opened my gym and those same people who laughed at me leaned on me for advice and asked me how I did it.

If you weren’t in this line of work, what would you be doing? I love to sing – a lot of people don’t know that about me. I’m pretty good at it! Last book you read? “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle What inspires you? I’m inspired by my team of trainers. I really believe in those guys. They come up with different workouts and have great energy. They really know how to have a good time and the people in my studio say they feel that. www.bestselfconnect.com

Where do you see yourself five years from now? Five years from now I hope to have opened more Body Sculptor gyms. I hope to have a book out, and to spread my message to more people, “Changing lives…one rep at a time.” Also, I hope to be married with a family and to have a house on the beach.

s the owner of West Coast Workout, Tammy Stokes has always had a passion for exercise, and now she has turned that passion into a successful business. Here, she talks about her journey and gives us her tips for staying fit. Most importantly, she offers a step-by-step instruction for “The No Excuses Workout,” which can be done when you’re short on time and still want to squeeze in some exercise. How did your passion for fitness first begin? It started when I was young. My aunt and I are four years apart in age. She was like an older sister to me. She would challenge me to do her "Jane Fonda like" exercise routines. My body would be so sore the next few days that I could barely walk - sounds crazy but I liked it. Exercise made me feel good and improved my self confidence. It had me loving the body I live in, back then and even more so now, in my mid-40s. What is the West Coast Workout and what makes it unique? We offer nine signature workouts at my studios because I believe one workout doesn't work. The combination of our workouts is exactly what creates the dramatic results. What defines West Coast Workout www.bestselfconnect.com

Power Squats Stand with your legs slightly wider than your hips. Bend your legs, keep your chest up and touch your fingers to the floor in a squat. Keep the height of your bum slightly above the height of your knees when you squat. In one move, jump your feet back together and reach your arms over your head. Repeat at a rapid pace.

Power Squats

Sprinter’s Lunge Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, arms at your sides. Take a large step back with your right foot until your fingertips touch the floor.

Sprinter’s Lunge

Get down on your hands and knees. While on all fours, raise your right arm reaching straight from your shoulder and extend your left leg straight so it is level with the height of your hips. Draw your right arm in, bending it at the same time you bend your left knee in towards your right elbow. Crunch your abdominals while you are contracting and then extend your arm and your leg fully. Do 15-25 repetitions before going to the other side.

TRAINERS WITH HEART is heart rate elevation combined with functional full body exercises. The results are authentic. Think Hollywood. The bodies are toned, not overly muscular. How did you first meet with Dr. Oz and develop "The No Excuses Workout"? I train some of Dr. Oz’s colleagues. I also work with FOX. Between a few referrals and my relationship with FOX, it was a done deal when the doctor was looking for a trainer in Atlanta. FOX wanted a workout that was for the “Ultra Busy Lifestyle.” Dr. Oz loved it so much he called it “The No Excuses Workout.” What is your best tip for people who are trying to get in shape? Make a plan, stick with it and never give up. Once you live it, you will discover there is no other way.

What do you think is a common excuse for people who avoid exercise and how can they overcome it? The most common excuse for not exercising is time. You can overcome it with "The No Excuses Workout.” I am known as the “excuse buster.” If you’ve got an excuse, I’ve got the solution. What is your connection to the west coast? My dad lived in L.A. I spent a lot of time visiting him throughout my childhood. I started my fitness career in Hollywood. I was lucky. I trained some of the best in the industry, including John Travolta. Currently, I spend a lot of time training in L.A. during award season. My clients love my “Skinny Food Diet” and the way my training makes their body “shine” on the red carpet. What is your simplest piece of advice when it comes to "living your best life"? Live your healthiest life. If you live your healthiest life, achieving your best life will be a lot easier. If you don’t, you may never reach that goal.

As a fitness professional, what has been your biggest challenge and reward? Keeping up with the demand. I could work 24/7. Good thing I practice yoga. The reward is why I wake up at 4:30 a.m. every day, enriching the lives of the people who show up. How do you stay motivated to work out? My clients motivate me. They are beautiful and amazing. What, if any, obstacles have you had to overcome in terms of achieving a healthy lifestyle? Sorting through what works and what’s worthless. There is so much garbage and so many gimmicks. I believe in real food, workouts that work and a life in balance. Most importantly, happiness is key. Tammy Stokes and Dr. Mehmet Oz

TRAINERS WITH HEART money you have. Everyone can do something, sometime, somewhere, with or without someone. Improving your health and fitness does not require any specialized equipment, athletic ability, or long hours to complete. I can teach anyone, anywhere, anytime how to fit fitness in, where you are, with what you have. What tips can you offer to people who want to begin an exercise regimen? I encourage people to find some type of physical activity they enjoy and start doing it, or do more of it. It can be something as simple as walking. The key is to enjoy (or at least like) what you’re doing, otherwise, why bother? If you don’t enjoy the activity, then chances are you won’t stick with it. I would rather have someone walk three to four days a week over the course of a year versus having them run like crazy for 90 days, get burned out (or injured) and give up all together!

hat made you want to get into the world of health and fitness? Here is something most people don’t know about me, because I’ve never publicly shared in great detail my personal story: Growing up I wasn’t an obese kid, but I was heavy enough to be poked, prodded and picked on to the extent that I was typically the last kid to be picked for team games, activities, etc. And, while I don’t recall any significant bullying, the experience left a mental and emotional “mark” nonetheless. On the flipside, I entered into a seriously dysfunctional and detrimental year and a half relationship with bulimia during my sophomore year as a wrestler. Originally, I planned to attend college and utilize my football and art scholarships with the intention of pursuing a career in commercial art or graphic design. I changed my major after the first year, became fascinated by the various health sciences and began learning as much as I could about the human body.

It was during an internship with an amazing exercise physiologist and her husband (a strength trainer for the University of Florida) that really opened my eyes to the possibility of helping people improve their lives through fitness. How do you help people stay motivated to work out? During the initial consultation I really drill down past all the superficial “fluff” and get down to the real reason they want to achieve a certain fitness goal. Once I know someone’s personal “why,” I can help them stay focused by keeping it front and center. How can people begin exercising if they have a busy schedule? Everyone is busy! It doesn’t matter who you are, what your schedule is like, how many kids you have, what your job requires or even how much www.bestselfconnect.com

1 1:22:57 PM 38197.12.1.indd Brian_profile.indd 43 1

If you weren’t in this line of work, what would you be doing? Maybe teaching, coaching or playing guitar in a band. Does retiring to the beach to give suntan lessons count? If someone could do one thing to begin their process toward healthier living, what would that first step be?

First, I remind people that getting from where you currently are to where you ultimately want to be is a process – similar to the one they implemented to achieve their current state. Nothing happens immediately, overnight or miraculously. To begin, find one thing in each category (training, nutrition, cardio) and commit to improving that single component. For instance, commit to lifting weights two to three days a week for 30 minutes to begin, or commit to eating a salad for lunch Monday through Friday, or commit to taking your dog for a 30 minute walk each morning. The key is to begin with a bite-size piece of your fitness plan and be consistent. Can you name a point in your career where you really felt you had helped people? There are four specific examples that I can instantly recall feeling like I truly helped others. • Teaching a stretch/strengthen class in an assisted living facility for seniors • Volunteering as a strength coach for the Special Olympics • Making up therapy “games” to help my son recover from his amputation • Starting AmpuCamp.org, a non-profit for amputees and their families and caregivers What is the best piece of advice you received? “Find your strength and make it freaky!” Basically, I was reminded to focus on (and be thankful for) what I do have, versus complaining about what I don’t. What inspires you? I’m continually inspired by my wife and son, who expect great things from me as a husband and father and to lead by example. I’m also inspired by the various people I meet through our amputee non-profit (AmpuCamp.org), where I’m continually reminded and blessed by the “gift of perspective” through others’ physical challenges. Whether it’s diet, training or changing their outlook on life, the following stories of transformation are an amazing testament to what hard work and determination can yield. Everyone’s path to getting healthy is different. It’s about finding what works for you, asking for help when you need it and never giving up.

After enduring almost two years of fertility treatments to get pregnant, I gave birth to a perfect little boy. The treatments caused me to gain weight and before I could think about losing it, I got pregnant again with a girl. With two children only 12 months apart, life was hectic. I fell into a downward spiral with very little sleep, no exercise, too much sugar and caffeine and eating when I could, which typically meant finishing what the kids had left on their plates. Naturally, this caused me to pack on the pounds. I finally had enough when my blood pressure spiked and I began having lower back pain as a result of carrying around too much weight. I consulted with my trainer, Steve, in April 2010. He built a training program for me that was both realistic and aggressive. My program included elements of strength training and cardio, with a greater emphasis on cardio for burning calories. It was hard, but Steve held me accountable for my progress and I was committed to following through. With Steve’s guidance and support, I made a conscious effort to change my caloric intake and eat only small, well-balanced meals throughout the day. As I started shedding pounds, I became more motivated. When my strength and energy began to build, he created even more challenging workouts. Use your time wisely. Work out harder for less time. Rob Mehal Taking On New Challenges

BEFORE I began working out with (my trainer) Ty two to three times per week. We focused on a lot of multiple muscle group exercises that engaged my core and kept my heart rate elevated. From the start, Ty drove home the importance of my work outside the gym, i.e. my eating habits. houseofpayne_4th.indd

12/19/11

unnecessary carbs, processed sugars, and increased my intake of lean protein. I trained myself to eat smaller meals more frequently. Within a few weeks I began to drop weight and started seeing differences in my muscle size and tone. My wife was so impressed. Even she began to train with Ty. It’s now been three years since that first fitness evaluation with Ty, and both my wife and I are still going strong with our changed and healthy lifestyles. We continue to do resistance training and cardio workouts at least two to three times per week and have made exercise and healthy eating a top priority in our lives. We both turned 40 this year, and have run a total of three USMC Mud Runs together and a few 5K road races, and are always looking for a new challenge. Feeling good about the way I look has given me continued motivation in the gym, and has positively affected me in many other areas of my life.

Stay on track Do something active every day and eat “clean.” You must make fitness a lifestyle to have long term success. Remember that you don’t have to be perfect to get fit and lose weight. If you get off track, you just get right back on. Don’t let yourself sabotage the rest of the day or week or month. It’s like getting a flat tire—you fix it and move on, you don’t poke holes in the rest of your tires.

Vicky Legaspi Break Bad Habits

BEFORE I never had a weight problem until I experienced the breakup of my marriage at 39. I turned to food for comfort and I thought since I had always maintained a slim physique it would not be much of an effort to lose the weight I was gaining. When I turned 40, I started going from diet to diet but none of them were sustainable. I am now in my early 50s and before I met Sheri, my health coach, I had lost some weight but still had a long way to go. More than just losing weight I wanted to learn how to take care of my overall well-being. The first thing she helped me to understand was what was causing my cravings. With her help, I was eventually able to eat well and to implement a sustainable exercise routine that fit my lifestyle. I started with twice a week and it then became a daily habit. When I would tell Sheri how I was struggling with getting rid of bad habits, like eating French fries (almost daily), she would ask me to consider what comfort I was getting from that food and to find it elsewhere. I don’t measure myself regularly, but I do know that my clothes are very loose. Thanks to all of the exercise, I have also built muscle and gained energy. I know I will reach my goal as long as I keep up with the things I have learned from Sheri.

You are what you eat Try the unwrapped food diet. If it didn’t grow, walk or swim, don’t eat it. Unwrapped foods, in their natural states, release a steady stream of sugar and nutrients into your body leading to feelings of fullness. Remember, the more sugar you eat, the more sugar you will crave.

I’m 46 years old, 5’5” and I began my weight loss challenge about 11 years ago when I went to the doctor for my annual exam. When I learned my weight was 232 pounds, I felt like a deer in headlights. I was very ashamed and disappointed in myself. I knew I had to do something, so I joined a gym. Over time, I lost about 45 pounds, but then as we all know, it’s easy to get comfortable, and the weight slowly crept back on. Some of the ladies in my gym tried to convince me to enter a figure competition. I wasn’t ready for that, but one of them suggested a competition might give me the motivation to work even harder, because with this new goal I also had a deadline. Several years passed and I was still spinning my wheels, losing and gaining weight. In 2011, I finally made up my mind that this is the year I would go after my goal. I was determined to compete in my first figure competition. After months of training, my body still wasn’t leaning out and time was running out. Life was stressful with work, training and feeling like my nutrition plan wasn’t working. It was mid-August and there were only a couple of local competitions left for the year. I was still hopeful I could reach my goal and determined not to give up.

In September, I began training at House of Payne, owned and operated by Rachel and Steve Payne. This dynamite duo is so motivating and knowledgeable. They provided me with a complete program (weight training, nutrition, cardio and posing) to help me realize my dream. I competed on November 5 in the SNBF Pro/Am Bodybuilding and Figure Show. I felt like the diva of the stage and now I have a new goal. I’m preparing for my next competition in 2012 and the sky is the limit. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve anything, and the reward will be great. So no matter what your goal is, never give up.

Choose wisely You make hundreds of choices every day. Before you choose what you are going to eat, or if you are going to skip a workout, remember your goal. Discipline or disappointment, it’s your choice.

BEFORE In May of 2010, I decided to go to Weight Watchers. I went with a friend, and despite my embarrassment, weighed in. I remember thinking, “It can only get better from here.” I started the plan and began to see results weekly. By month four, I had lost 50 pounds but I had done this before. I wanted to go further this time, so I decided to add exercise to my routine. I started slowly, and by Christmas of 2010, I was exercising three to four times a week. I was doing boot camp and walking on my off days. I started going to the Concourse Athletic Club last spring where I met Iliyas Rahman, an amazing trainer. Continuing with my boot camp and adding workouts with Iliyas has taught me that I am strong, and that I am an athlete, not just a person trying not to be fat. I have lost 160 pounds and while I am still on my journey, I know I will never go back to living life on the sidelines.

Cullen Sacha Healthier Choices Made a New Man

BEFORE

When I entered Paul Rodgers’ IQ Fitness this summer, I had been exercising pretty regularly. After my first meeting with Paul, he promised I could see dramatic results if I changed my diet and followed his exercise plan. At six feet and 215 pounds, I knew I had a few pounds to lose. But I did not think dramatic results were possible because I was exercising already. Paul asked me to give him 90 days. My transformation began on August 1. I cut processed sugar and grains from my diet. At Paul’s suggestion, my wife and I bought our dinners from Savi Urban Market. The meals included one high quality protein and two veggies. Much to our surprise, they were extremely tasty and very convenient because they are ready to eat in five minutes. I trained at IQ Fitness in a small group setting, but every session felt like personal training. I did not want a trainer to shout at me; I wanted a teacher to instruct me on better nutrition and fitness. I asked a lot of questions and found Paul to be the most knowledgeable fitness professional I have ever met.

Billy Streck

Break your sugar habit Everyone is different, and what may motivate one person may not motivate another. One tip is “don’t dig your grave with your own knife and fork.” This quote is particularly true for many people who eat for comfort or because of boredom. Food is for nutrients, so eat nutrient dense foods. When your nutritional needs are naturally met you crave less of the bad foods that can lead to weight gain and because you are properly fed, you will have more energy to move and exercise. Stay away from liquid calories since these can bombard your body with truckloads of extra calories, spike your insulin levels and hold your metabolism hostage from switching to the fat burning mode. One of the most successful things that you can do to reduce the craving of “bad carbs” like breads and pasta, is to use probiotic foods.

Fitness Trainer, Paul Rodgers IQ Fitness and Wellness Buckhead www.iqfitness.net

Every day I faced challenges – avoiding chocolate chip cookies a colleague placed inches from my face, or eating an apple instead of an egg roll when Chinese food was served at a meeting. Just as Paul promised, the pounds started melting away. I could not believe how fast I was losing weight. After 10 weeks, I lost 34 pounds of fat and put on 11 pounds of muscle! I gained strength, speed and stamina. I made it through Halloween, Thanksgiving and most of football season without gaining any of the weight back. I am a new man with a new lifestyle.

Choose a Better Life Billy Streck, owner of Cypress Street Pint and Plate, had to lose a lot to gain a lot. Weighing just about 270 pounds, he realized he needed to make a change. Over the last year, he lost nearly 100 pounds, changing not just his own life, but his family’s as well. Billy was a slave to his medications - two for blood pressure and two for cholesterol. “I would go to sleep sometimes at night and feel like I wasn’t going to wake up,” Streck explains. “I wanted to be there for my family, my daughter. I wanted to be able to walk her down the aisle one day.” He took a step back from his life and began to take control. He started attending Weight Watchers meetings to maintain motivation and learned about portion control and what it means to eat natural and organically. It was important to Streck that he didn’t get caught up in the obsession of numbers that can happen with a weight loss regimen. “Weight Watchers was a tool for me to learn about how to eat cleaner, maintain and find a balance.” Streck is proud of his participation in the most recent Peachtree Road Race. After not running in 15 years, he felt a rush of pride and accomplishment. Now weighing in at about 190 pounds, Streck said one of his biggest challenges is maintaining a balance in diet and weight, but every step is worth it. Today he swears by running at least three times a week, and he walks more and takes the car less. “When the weight starts coming off, you start seeing the world clearly,” Streck says. “It’s been a great journey.”

Make smart food choices Focus on foods with fuel. Your body works harder to process protein and fiber than they do with the fat and carbs. Plus, protein and fiber help you feel full and therefore more satisfied. At Weight Watchers we call these fueling foods Power Foods, and they include lean protein, fruits, veggies, whole grains and non-fat dairy.

Junel Doxie Overcoming the Obstacles

I’d been overweight or “big-boned” from middle school into adulthood, and getting bigger every year. In 2009, I was in my early 30s with no change. I felt lost in a body that restricted me from regular life, and I was worried about my health. Something had to happen. In June, I met Nathan through a free class offered at Trinity Fitness. I liked the non-pushy attitude when he talked about what he had to offer. I signed up for the Take 21 program, a course that provided me with guidelines on how to work out effectively and eat correctly. I lost seven pounds in 21 days and it became my blueprint. After eight months, I had lost 60 pounds and went from a size 18 to a size 12. I woke up every day with more energy and motivation. Ensure your workouts are comprised of compound movements, meaning you In July 2010, I was invited to join the Trinity are working multiple muscle groups Taekwondo team. Just two years prior, I never simultaneously. Eat every three to thought I’d be able to partake in one of the three and a half hours, as this helps kickboxing classes, much less compete on the keep your metabolism at a steady, consistent level. If fat loss is the goal, team. But I had the desire to prove to myself avoid sugar. Most importantly, find a that I could. After training and competing for workout regimen that you enjoy with a year, I won my first national championship at individuals who are supportive of the 2011 AAU Nationals. I fulfilled my dream your goals. This is often the difference of skydiving this year on my birthday. I’m now between succeeding or failing with a fitness routine. If it’s not fun, then you’re training for the Tough Mudder, an 11 mile, 25 not likely to keep the commitment, so obstacle adventure race held in February 2012. have fun! Walter and Jennifer Orechwa Find Strength Together

I’ve been active my whole life, and was well-informed regarding nutrition and exercise, but at 40 years old it seemed that no matter how much exercise I added to the equation, I could never get back to a healthy weight. Meanwhile, my husband had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was taking several medications. We were paying a fortune for the medications every month, and while I liked to think I was healthier than he was, at 40 pounds overweight, I was lying to myself. So last July I started the cycle again - diet, exercise, discipline, hard work, 20 pounds gone, followed by that same brick wall. I got off the scale that hadn’t budged in two weeks, ready to scream. But this time, I didn’t give up. I decided enough was enough. I didn’t know everything (obviously!) and I needed some help. On our way to work that morning, I told my husband that I needed to stop doing these same things, expecting different results. I did a morning’s worth of research and we drove to Jenny Craig that same day and we signed up together. Today, he’s 60 pounds lighter and I’ve lost 45. We started small on the exercise, using Valerie Bertinelli’s DVDs in the basement, but as we got stronger, healthier and thinner, we gained confidence. Now we’ve become runners, something I never thought we would do! I’m hoping to complete a half marathon this fall. We really enjoy running and I hope we can do it for decades to come. My husband has never looked better, and our weight loss has been a hugely positive force in our marriage. I know I wouldn’t have made it to where we are now without his love and support. Our Jenny Craig consultant, Linda, has been the backbone of our success. She would help me keep the goals in mind, never letting me give up. That relationship with her has also been a large part of reaching the goals we set for ourselves.

Watch your food portion size Two of my favorite tips I like to share with clients include making meals more volumetric. That means always starting out with a large tossed salad, fruit bowl or assorted vegetables with fat-free dressing. Also, using smaller plates is great for portion control. Psychologically, it will seem like you’re enjoying a lot more food.

What is your definition of transformation? Transformation is a “shift in the being that one is”. It occurs as an experience that one has inside oneself. This is not merely a “change” or an “expansion” although it does include both. Rather it is an altercation, a new experience that is evident both inside and outside oneself, as it shows up in both places. Many of us read self help books or take classes to learn and grow as we go through personal development. Transformation though, is a process that takes time. It is a result of a deep profound shift in the way one sees oneself, the “being” that one is. This then in turn, shows up in what one does and does not do out here in the World as a “natural fallout.” I know you have had some success in your classes and in your coaching practice at assisting this process for others, how have you accomplished this? Through my research and experience I find that each of us have unconscious (if not conscious) stories going on inside ourselves that leave us in a “not so great” place inside. As we go through life we encounter enviornmental triggers that activate and start these stories. They are very much like a file that gets opened up and starts running. Some are more impactful than others, especially the ones that got formed in our early childhood based upon what we wanted and did not get emotionally from Mom or Dad. Whatever happened we have assessments and interpretations which we call our “old stories” and we assist people to generate a “new story” based on what is true now. How do you do this? We teach “inner work” processes wherein one writes or states the old story along with the what one feels as a result and then the new story and feelings. Most importantly they create action steps that will “anchor in” the new story. As one takes these actions, usually 3, although sometimes even one or two may suffice, one “experiences” a “shift” up inside oneself. This is a powerful process, especially for young people who then gain a “head start” for the rest of their lives rather than going through the years of frustration as some of us have. This process is best accomplished when done under the auspices of a trained LifeWorks Certified Coach. What is the end result? One begins to view oneself anew, we like to say one becomes a “newme.” This occurs inside which is tremendously fulfilling and outside which shows up as productivity. Furthermore, one moves out of “neediness” into “giving” and looks to contribute to others what one felt was “missing.” As a result, one moves from “survival to thrival!”

Ivy Booker Reaching Your Goals

At age 48, I became very overweight. I used food as comfort due to stress and didn’t think I would ever get the weight off. I always ate the wrong way, not really knowing what the right way was. In 2009, I was admitted into the hospital twice due to high blood pressure. The last time I was admitted it scared me so I decided to do something about it. This is when I decided to take Tracey up on her offer to train me. I had never exercised in my life and this was going to be a new experience for me. At first fear took over. I was scared to death and tried to back out several times. Tracey was very encouraging and promised we would take it one workout at a time. It was the best decision I ever made. One year later I was off all my blood pressure medicine and was 40 pounds lighter. I have lost a total of 65 pounds to date and I am still going. My final goal is to be a size eight, 170 pounds and to be able comfortably wear a swim suit. I have had many challenges along the way such as chronic knee pain and eating setbacks but Tracey provided solutions that I could practically apply to my life and it worked. I hope my story helps others who are fearful of working out and facing chronic health issues. If you just start the rest will fall in place.

Have a positive attitude

Like anything else staying fit is a two part commitment, first the mental then the physical. Whatever you do, keep moving. Do something every day. We are going to mess up and that’s ok, it is what you do after that matters. Nothing tastes as good as working hard and looking good.

The Real Skinny on the hCG Diet

BEFORE The hCG diet has been around since the 1950’s, but in the last 2 years more patients have used the program to lose weight, than in the previous 60 years combined. Let’s review some of the facts and myths associated with this revolutionary program.

Anyone would lose weight on a 500 calorie diet. Fact: Initially that’s true, however, during times of severe caloric restriction, the body will go into starvation mode, metabolism slows and muscle tissue can be depleted. Not to mention the fact that you are hungry or as some people would term “HANGRY”. Appropriate, prescription forms of hCG will stimulate lipolysis (the breakdown of fat), while acquiring approximately 2000 calories per day of energy from these same fat stores. You are not hungry, you are not losing muscle, and you are losing fat.

All dosage forms of hCG are just as effective. Fact: One of the most effective dosage forms of hCG is the pharmaceutical grade injections.

Homeopathic hCG is sold via the internet and elsewhere at a lower cost and claims to be a safer alternative to prescription hCG. Fact: By law, homeopathic hCG does not contain the hCG hormone, consequently results are inconsistent.

All hCG weight loss programs are alike. Fact: Whenever you are administering something new to the body, it is always recommended that you are supervised; followed by a board certified MD who understands how to use hCG safely. Equilibrium Weight Loss and Longevity Centers offer a physician supervised program, using a naturally occurring hormone already produced in the body-hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in very low doses to enable any human body approximately

AFTER 2,000 calories of stored fat for use as your primary daily energy source. This results in an average fat loss of 4 – 8 pounds each week!

The Advantages of using the Equilibrium Weight Loss Program are clear. • • • • • • •

Innovative Skincare Products

What is your background, and how did you get into skincare?

What are the best products for protecting skin from the sun?

I have been receiving skincare treatments since I was 18, which made me fall in love with the industry. I aim to provide exceptional results while pampering my clients.

I highly recommend using a combination product that has antioxidants, such as a physical sunscreen blocker like zinc, and a chemical sunscreen to provide broad spectrum protection.

What are some of your favorite skincare products today?

How early should children and/or teens begin a skincare regimen?

I absolutely cannot live without Revision’s Intellishade tinted daily moisturizer with SPF, Divine’s Pack Your Bags eye gel, and VI Derm Complete Care night cream.

What is the best skincare service you offer, and what makes it unique? Our most popular service is our Refresh Laser Facial, as it targets several skin concerns in one visit with no pain or downtime. We layer several lasers to even skin tone, brighten, tighten and diffuse redness, and we finish with a hydrating collagen treatment.

Who are some skin conditions that can be treated with this service? The Refresh Laser Facial is perfect for reducing brown spots, fine lines, redness, scars, and smoothing the skin’s texture.

What sorts of ingredients should we look for in our skincare products, and which ones should we avoid? At Bella, we are constantly on the hunt for the latest and greatest in effective, low-chemical, easy-to-use products. I like to avoid parabens and synthetics, and I always look for antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties like green tea extract.

We treat clients as young as eight years old. It all depends on the client’s skin type and concerns. For maintenance treatments and facials, I recommend getting started in the early twenties.

What is a good piece of advice you give to patients who want to take good care of their skin? Take time to investigate what your skin wants and needs as far as exfoliation, products and treatments. Everyone’s skin is different, and our skin changes with the seasons as well as age. There is amazing technology out there that can create dramatic improvements in one’s skin and greatly affect the aging process. Alethea Tinkle

Dealing With Shoulder Pain

What are some of the most common causes of shoulder pain?

What does shoulder anthroscopy entail?

Shoulder pain can be caused by numerous factors, both traumatic and atraumatic. Traumatic causes of shoulder pain include direct blows that are common in contact sports as well as motor vehicle collisions. Atraumatic injuries usually occur from overuse and overhead activities, and include rotator cuff tendonitis, rotator cuff tears, biceps tendonitis, impingement syndrome and arthritis.

Shoulder arthroscopy is a technique used to visualize and treat shoulder injuries in the operating room through very small incisions. Rotator cuff and labral tears can both be treated arthroscopically on an outpatient basis.

When do you need to see a doctor about shoulder pain? Shoulder injuries need to be evaluated as soon as possible when related to trauma, or when recovery does not occur from simple rest in the overuse situation.

How is shoulder pain treated? Although each case has to be evaluated separately, many causes of shoulder pain can be treated with a change in workplace ergonomics, a training regimen that includes a stretching and strengthening program, and by taking anti-inflammatory medication.

How do you determine when surgery is necessary? After examining the patient and reviewing the pertinent studies (often including x-ray and MRI), a doctor can determine the benefits and risks of surgery. In the case of fractures and arthritis, repair of the bone with plates and screws or replacement of the joint with metal and plastic offers fast relief of pain.

How long is the recovery time after shoulder replacement surgery? Recovery from shoulder surgery is highly dependent on the procedure performed. Recovery from a procedure performed to treat rotator cuff tendonitis may only take two to four weeks, while recovery from certain rotator cuff repairs and shoulder replacements may take two to four months. Each case has to be evaluated based on the injury, and the patient’s underlying health status. Dr. Eric Furie

Botox for Migraines

What are the most common symptoms of migraine headaches? A migraine is a severe, painful headache that is often preceded or accompanied by sensory warning signs such as flashes of light, blind spots, nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light and sound. The excruciating pain that migraines bring can last for hours or even days. A chronic migraine is a severe headache that can last more than a day or several times per week. Neurological symptoms such as numbness and tingling in the arms or legs can also accompany a migraine.

When is it time to discuss Botox as a treatment for chronic migraines? A discussion about Botox is appropriate in situations where patients suffer from more than 14 headaches per month, in a span of more than six months, and after trying and failing at least two medications to prevent headaches from coming.

Does insurance cover Botox? Yes. If the criteria listed above are met, then insurance typically approves this treatment. Your physician’s office will obtain the approval prior to Botox therapy.

How is the drug administered? The drug is administered through a series of injections in the frown lines of the face, the forehead, the temples, and in the back of the head and the trapezius region. The injections are administered through a very thin needle, so there is essentially no discomfort. The entire process takes about 15 minutes and there is no downtime.

What should I expect from Botox? Botox typically results in a 50 percent or more reduction in the severity and frequency of headaches and lasts up to three to four months. A majority of people experience immediate results; however, some may require more than one injection cycle for more consistent and lasting results.

Are there any side effects from using Botox to fight migraines? The only side effect might be some slight irritation at the injection site a day or so after the procedure, but Botox is only administered under the skin, so it is not expected to have any effects on the body.

How does Botox differ from other migraine treatments? Typical treatments for migraines include medications that prevent headaches from coming, but they have to be taken daily and sometimes cause unwanted side effects. Botox is typically administered every three months. Some patients are able to come off of their preventative medications entirely with the use of Botox. Husham Mishu, MD

Alternative Approaches to Gut Health

In recent headlines, digestive health seems to take center stage, and good gut health is a commonly discussed theme. Older systems of medicine like Chinese medicine and Ayurveda have established the importance of optimal digestion for centuries. In the integrative medicine community, good gut health is the key to long term wellness. Approximately 70 percent of the immune system is centered in the gut.

What are the most common symptoms of digestive disorders? Digestive disorders will present bloating, diarrhea, constipation, reflux and abdominal pain. The symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to severe pain.

involve dietary changes and supplements. Some natural supplements include pre and probiotics, digestive enzymes and Omega-3 supplementation.

What is the difference between the “good” and “bad” gut bacteria? Digestion heals as inflammatory proteins are taken away and creates the right mix of bacteria is in the gut. Good bacteria, found naturally in yogurt and kefir, help promote digestion and metabolism of food. Bad bacteria contribute to yeast overgrowth in the gut wall and many of the symptoms patients present.

Why is good gut health so important to our overall wellbeing? What are some common triggers of indigestion? Triggers of poor digestion include stress, poor diet including ingestion of undiagnosed food intolerances, structural abnormalities and nutritional deficiencies. Hormone imbalances can also lead to digestive disorders and vice versa.

What are some typical digestive disorders you see in your patients? Common digestive disorders include irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, colitis and reflux.

How do you diagnose these “gut” issues? These can be diagnosed through blood and stool studies and imaging. Occasionally biopsies may be warranted if symptoms continue to be baffling.

What are some natural supplements that can improve and/ or restore digestive health? At ACHIM, patients are often placed on a gut restoration program. This may

Put Your Best Smile Forward in 2012 Drink Water Some bottled water contains fluoride and some does not, so make sure you are getting a sufficient amount of fluoride to prevent tooth decay and promote oral health.

Night Guard If you wake up in the morning with jaw pain or notice that you may be clenching and grinding your teeth at night, you may want to look into wearing a night guard. Your jaw constricts with age, which in turn causes your teeth to shift. A night guard will protect your teeth from wear and tear as well as help your jaw muscles relax.

SPF Lip Balm Protect your lips! They get dry in the winter and burned in the summer, so protect your lips all year round with at least an SPF 15.

Floss Daily I know this one is easier said than done. Just remember to floss the teeth you want to keep...I hope you are flossing all of them!

No Crunching Ice Crunching ice causes more breaks and fractures that you would imagine. Try to avoid eating ice, and if you must, let them melt a little first.

Keep Up With Cleanings and Exams Even if you are in the percentile of great oral hygiene, keeping up with your regular dental cleaning and exams is important and can prevent heart disease by decreasing bacteria and inflammation. Taking a proactive approach will inevitably have its benefits.

Healthy Lifestyle Invest in an Electric Toothbrush “Brush smarter, not harder” is a common phrase we use in our office with our patients. Brushing too hard can cause sensitivity and break down enamel. To avoid this, invest in an electric or soft tooth brush to get the same results in a more comfortable way.

Professional Teeth Whitening There are a variety of options today when it comes to teeth whitening. Lower concentrated products can be found at your local drug store and the higher concentrated products are typically found at your dentist’s office. To get the most bang for your buck, professional teeth whitening systems from your dentist are a great choice and often show results quickly with a professional available for any questions. Atlanta Smiles and Wellness has a few options, whether it is in-office or take-home. To see what best works for you, contact your dentist to inquire about their options as well.

Sip with a straw This is a technique that some people favor! When drinking coffee, tea, soda or even red wine, try to sip through a straw to avoid staining your teeth. By avoiding the extra dye or additives, this is simple yet powerful method to maintain your beautiful smile. (If you aren’t willing to use a straw, brushing after consuming will also help reduce its effect.)

Last, but definitely not least, keeping a healthy lifestyle has too many benefits to name – including a better smile. Exercising and eating well (stay away from sugar at all costs!) improves your overall health and wellness.

Good Measure Meals™ vs. Fad Diets

BEFORE

AFTER Rebecca Barnes is a Good Measure Meals ™ customer

What is Good Measure Meals™? Good Measure Meals™ (GMM) prepares and delivers healthy calorie and portion-controlled meal plans of gourmet quality. The meal plans can be used for weight loss or management of certain chronic illnesses associated with obesity. They are also a convenient option for those who don’t have the time to cook. The unique aspect of GMM is that 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of our meals go directly to Atlanta nonprofit Open Hand.

What makes GMM different from other fad diets? Fad diets promise rapid weight loss without physical activity, and are very restrictive when it comes to calories or even certain food groups. While GMM food is calorie-managed to support healthy and sustainable weight loss, we don’t cut corners on taste and nutritional quality.

Does your program really work? One of our favorite success stories is Rebecca Barnes. Rebecca started on our meal plan as a contestant of Atlanta’s Biggest Loser. She lost 40 pounds during the competition and another 60 pounds since. Rebecca ate regularly and kept up a good exercise program. Her commitment and our meals made the difference.

What additional resources does GMM offer to its customers? We have several Registered Dietitians (RDs) and qualified food and nutrition experts to assist customers on their weight management journey. With our Comprehensive Nutrition Consult (CNC), customers meet with an RD who analyzes their nutritional wellbeing and lifestyle to provide an individualized nutritional plan.

What type of food is included in the meal plan? There is a tremendous variety of food - enough to satisfy anyone’s palate. The menu runs on a fiveweek cycle, so customers never

get bored, and they change twice a year to include fresh, seasonal items, like summer salads or winter squash.

How does the meal plan work? There are four calorie ranges: 1200, 1400, 1700 and 2100. Customers who opt for these will receive three meals per day and some snacks to fulfill these calories. Meals can be ordered for five or seven days of the week, and if a full meal plan isn’t necessary, customers can order the dinners only. Meals can be ordered weekly or monthly. There are four types of meal plans: Healthy Selection, Healthy Selection without seafood, Diabetic Plan and Vegetarian Plan. Ordering GMM is simple and can be done via phone or online.

Where are the meals cooked, and how fresh are they when they reach me? The meals are prepared and cooked locally in Midtown Atlanta using the freshest ingredients available. Meals are delivered fresh, never frozen or dehydrated. Customers can choose to have these delivered to a pick up location, or to their homes for an additional charge, twice a week.

What benefits can GMM customers expect from the meal plan? The reassurance that they are achieving their health goals in a healthy (and tasty!) manner without gimmicks or concern. Mis-Diagnosed HIP, Lower BACK & GROIN Pain? The sacroiliac joint is often overlooked by most doctors. The sacroiliac joint or S/I joint is a semi-fixed joint, located approximately at the top of each buttock, between the hip joint and the lower back. It sits between the sacrum, at the base of the spine and the ilium of the pelvis, which are joined by ligaments. It is a strong, weight-bearing synovial joint (A lubricant in most major joints) with irregular elevations and depressions that produce interlocking of the two bones. Humans have a left and right S/I joint that often match individually but are highly variable from person to person. When the S/I joint becomes inflamed or degenerated from an old fall, slip or minor trauma, it is called S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliatiis. The S/I is also susceptible to overuse, especially with women who have given birth. During the birthing process, this joint is exposed to high levels of stress, increasing that areas susceptibility to arthritic changes and arthrosis. When this happens, the joint surface is no longer smooth, causing irritation to the surrounding overlapping tissues and nerves. Weak ligaments in the area may also allow the S/I to “shift” improperly causing undo stress.

What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy • Non-Toxic Non-Surgical Pain Solutions That Work

The problems and pain associated with S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliitis can include unexplained groin pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, leg inflammation and even sciatic type nerve problems. Because of these symptoms, often times physicians look to the lower back and hips as the main cause and so the patient usually continues to have off/on chronic issues in that area, leading to potentially severe osteoarthritis of the S/I joint. It is important to understand that the S/I joint relies on the health of the surrounding structures to maintain its health. For example; Weak ligaments and tendons in the area can cause mal-alignment of vital musculoskeletal structures, greatly contributing to S/I joint problems. Additionally knee problems, over extended periods of time can contribute to S/I joint issues. What to do? Steroid or cortico-steroid injections should be an absolute last option because of the potential long term negative side effects to the joint and surrounding connective tissue. Many options for treating the S/I joint are available that may even restore full normal function. The goal of these treatments is NOT only pain suppression, but rather to eliminate the cause by correcting mal-aligned structures, improving the health of the joint and reducing the ligament laxity or weakness. Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover this treatment. To see if you qualify, call Total HealthCare Medical Clinics. Norcross 770-416-9995 or Sandy Springs 678-9998531

Rebuilding Tuscaloosa

Volunteer spotlights

April 27, 2011 will be remembered for a long, long time as the day the devastating tornado outbreak hit the southeast. One of the hardest hit cities was Tuscaloosa, Alabama, home of The University of Alabama. Not even a year before this fateful day, I had moved from my apartment in Tuscaloosa to Atlanta with my wife. I had lived in Tuscaloosa for five years and knew I would be back to visit, but didn’t know it would be under these circumstances. After seeing the devastation on the news, I knew I needed to go help any way I could.

storm were able to make calls to loved ones, charge their phones or receive new phones.

Two days after the tornadoes hit, the company I work for, Verizon Wireless, sent volunteers to the tornado-ravaged cities. I immediately jumped on board and went back to my home of five years. The destruction was unimaginable but the camaraderie of the survivors was undeniable. We set up generators in a Verizon store close to the damaged areas to make sure people who lost power or their cell phones in the

I recently went back to Tuscaloosa for a football game and although the rebuilding process is underway, there is still so much damage and many people still out of homes. It’s important to remember that donations and supplies will be needed for a long time to come. Tuscaloosa has been changed forever. To donate to the relief efforts, visit www. donatetuscaloosa.weebly.com or www.redcross.org.

My main purpose was to coordinate the delivery of supplies brought in from Verizon stores around the southeast and make sure they got to shelters and relief volunteers. It was amazing to see how such simple things like water, a toothbrush or just someone to talk to could brighten the day of someone who had almost lost their life.

Chattahoochee Nature Center

The Shepherd Center is a private, not-forprofit hospital specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injury. Patients at the Shepherd Center get more than just medical care; they get an experience that brings healing and hope. Volunteers make all the difference at the Sheperd Center and there are a number of opportunities for volunteers, whether you enjoy interacting with patients, performing clerical tasks or assisting with fun events. The volunteer opportunities are listed on their website.

The mission of the Chattahoochee Nature Center is to provide unique learning experiences focused on the Chattahoochee River that connect people to the natural world and empower them to positively impact their local environments. Volunteers are a key part of the center and there are many exciting volunteer opportunities available including year round volunteers or one-time special event volunteers. Volunteers are needed in the environmental education, horticulture, administration and wildlife departments with a variety of shifts available.

Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

my journey CJ Senter “The Workout Kid” Keeping active is as important for adults as it is for kids, and getting into the habit of working out early is one of the most important steps toward taking a stand against obesity. For 10-year-old CJ Senter, staying active is not just part of his everyday life - it’s a part of his professional life as well. CJ is one of the youngest exercise instructors in the U.S., bringing his love of exercise to the masses through his “Workout Kid” video series. How old were you when you first started working out, and what made you want to share this passion with other kids? I first began working out when I was five years old and my coach wanted us to get ready for a big (football) game. So I went home and began doing pushups and crunches and I have been doing it ever since then. The idea for “The Workout Kid” began when I was watching TV and saw an infomercial called P90X and wondered why they did not have something like this for kids. I asked my father if I could do an exercise video for kids and he said sure. How do you motivate people to get fit? I try to motivate people to get fit by telling them how great they will feel once they complete a workout and to start by just walking or going outside and having fun. Can you describe a moment where you really felt you had helped someone? I have had kids from my school and all over the world write letters telling me how they love my DVD and that they have lost weight and want to continue exercising and staying fit.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? The best piece of advice I have received is to always have fun when I work out.

What makes your workouts unique? My workouts are unique because my exercises are fun and anyone can do them. I created signature exercise moves just for kids called Power Jacks, The Shredder, The Fighter, The Invisible Jump Rope, Butt Kicks and Flyaways. None of my workout moves involve weights, so you can even do them in your pajamas!

How do you stay motivated to lead a healthy life? My motivation comes from the way I feel after completing a workout. I sleep better and have plenty of energy the next day.

What would you say to kids who don’t want to exercise? I tell kids that don’t want to exercise to just try it first and start off by just doing one push-up then challenge themselves to do a little more every day. Exercise can be fun if you make it fun.

How do you manage your busy schedule between appearances and school? I try to manage my schedule by working hard to complete all of my goals. I do all of my homework and make good grades.

What inspires you every day? I try to stay focused and inspire myself to work hard in school and to always try and stay fit and active. For more information, visit www.workoutkid.com

What is the hope for the new program, “Workout Kid for Schools”? The “Workout Kid for Schools” program will hopefully get all kids around the world inspired to get fit and have fun while working out. It will also help P.E. teachers give kids an exciting new workout for kids by a kid. A lot of schools only have P.E. class once a week, so if they can introduce “Workout Kid” to kids early, the kids might do the workout at home and on the weekends as well.

My name is LuAnn. I am a Nurse Practitioner and I stand on my feet all day long in my job. In the last few years, I had begun to have a lot of problems with deep aching pain and swelling in my leg. I started to have to limit my activity and the pain began to interfere with my life. I had been to several doctors who could not help me because of a complicated venous condition that I have had my entire life. Then I was referred to Dr. Prevosti. The procedures that he performed for me completely eliminated the pain and swelling. I am now able to do things that I have never been able to do before! Dr. Prevosti’s compassion and expertise in the treatments that he provides are the best in his Åeld.
