Is This My Intuition or Is It Fear?
By India Leigh With all of the shifts and challenges of the past year, we seem to be constantly feeling afraid. But is what we’re feeling the challenge of spiritual growth or the limiting fear of the mind? The two can feel maddeningly similar at times, but there are a few tools you can use to discern whether what you’re feeling is the natural apprehension of growth or fear from the ego trying to hold you back.
What is your body telling you? One of the best, most accurate ways to tell what is fear and what is your soul guidance is to pay attention to your body. Ego fear can feel like someone has pulled the fire alarm inside you. Your heart races, your mind screams and you may even experience acute symptoms like headache, muscle spasm, stomach distress and more. These can be indicators that your mind is trying to control things, distract you from ego-intimidating inner guidance or “protect” you from a challenging growth opportunity.
When you are making a choice, and you’re not sure if the fear you’re feeling is your mind or intuition, write down a list of the reasons you WOULD take the action in question, then list the reasons you WOULD NOT do it. Compare them. One will likely be filled with reasons that are clearly of the rational mind/ego; the other will be made of heart-based reasons. Go with the decision tied to the heart’s list. It will scare the mind, but your intuition will show you the way. Ask yourself some key questions. When you are feeling anything like this (and you’ve eliminated the possibility of a medical problem), stop and ask yourself: “What am I feeling in my heart? What are the stories my mind is telling me right now? Are they true? What is the little child version of me feeling/ experiencing?” Gently thank your body for bringing bestselfatlanta.com

your attention to the fears of the future and limiting stories from the past playing in your mind, breathe deeply, and let your body and mind know it’s safe to come into the present moment, let go and follow your intuition.
Listen for the quiet voice. Unlike the shrill bells and whistles of the mind, the sound of intuition is soft and calming, yet strong and confident. This is why doing a daily practice of quieting the mind is so important. Once you’ve tuned in to your body and listened to what your mind has to say about what it’s afraid of, you are ready to receive the messages, signs and opportunities being sent to you through your intuition. You may experience chills in your body, visions and sounds, slight dizziness or other extrasensory signals that you are connecting to your intuition.
Be prepared. Since the path of soul expansion is more of a wild roller coaster than a predictable boat ride, the guidance you receive will undoubtedly challenge you to stretch outside your comfort zone. It will require you to face deep-seated childhood fears around not being loved and survival fears that originate far back in your ancestry. Facing down the intense apprehension of the ego-mind and choosing to take that next leap of faith is a challenging yet exhilarating process. 2021 Partners in Health Men’s Health Low-Down on Testosterone By Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA
We have all heard the expression, “less is more.” However, in the case of testosterone replacement, “more” can actually be “less.” Our bodies do not differentiate naturally produced testosterone from that purchased from a pharmacy. In turn, our natural production plummets in response to this replacement. Even after discontinuation, this decrease can last many months or longer, depending on the duration of therapy. Let’s answer the five most common questions about this elusive male hormone.
moderation is still needed for your body to manufacture testosterone. Other dietary recommendations include vitamin D supplementation and minimizing alcohol consumption.
Who needs testosterone replacement? If you listen to the ads about “low T,” you would think every man could benefit. However, a low level is not enough—at least one related symptom or condition must also exist. The most common problems related to low T are decreased sexual drive and erectile dysfunction. Other conditions that justify replacement include low bone density, diabetes, recent muscle loss, and metabolic syndrome (characterized by insulin resistance, increased central body fat, and abnormal lipid panel). Low T can also lead to symptoms such as fatigue or depression, but these common conditions may be unrelated to the hormonal deficiency. In any case, you should rely on guidance from your physician.
Can testosterone cause prostate cancer? Testosterone does not cause prostate cancer. However, men with a history of high-risk prostate cancer (or untreated prostate cancer) should avoid replacement unless otherwise advised by a urologist. In addition, PSA blood levels should be monitored carefully after starting testosterone replacement in order to screen for prostate cancer.
Who should be tested for low testosterone? All adult men with consistent signs, symptoms, or associated conditions of low T should undergo testing. How can you raise your testosterone levels naturally? Moderate and regular exercise is the most reliable way to increase your testosterone production naturally, with resistance training having the greatest effect. Consistent quality sleep is also essential to maintain your testosterone level. Since stress can increase your blood cortisol (an inhibitor of testosterone), stress management can also be crucial. Of course, exercise and sleep are very effective in reducing stress. Although a high body-fat percentage will decrease hormone levels, a healthy dietary fat intake in

As you can see, low T can be one of the most over-diagnosed and under-diagnosed conditions that we see in men. It all starts with awareness, education, and testing. 2021 Partners in Health How to Start Your New Year with a Healthy Spine By Jack R. Pines, III, M.D.
The New Year will be here before we know it, so it is time to make a plan to help ensure 2021 starts off on the right foot! With the year of quarantine nearly behind us, now is the perfect time to focus on the health of your spine. There are plenty of ways to work on the health of your neck and back from home—here are some recommendations from the physicians at Resurgens Spine Center to help you improve the shape of your spine:
Stay Active and Stretch Increasing physical activity and stretching can not only help your spine, but also improve your overall health in many ways. Aerobic exercises, like walking, and a good stretching routine or implementing yoga can be very beneficial when it comes to the health of your spine. Aerobic exercise helps by promoting blood flow to the tissues, including the small muscles located in your neck and back. This increase in blood flow helps deliver nutrients and oxygen which can help repair injured or damaged tissue. Stretching promotes a strengthened core and improved flexibility, both of which can drastically improve the stability, health and overall function of your spine. This increased function of the spine may also lead to reduction and improvement of pain. Exercise examples: • Aerobic activity: walking at a moderate intensity for 20-30 minutes 3-5 days per week. • Stretching exercises: bridges, knee to chest, hamstring stretches and hip stretches. • Strengthening exercises: crunches, superman low
back extensions and push-ups. For a more formal home exercise and stretching routine, consult your spine physician or consider spine physical therapy to enhance the health of your spine as we move into 2021.
A Good Night’s Sleep Getting good quality sleep is a great New Year’s resolution to improve the health of your spine. Sleep is a restorative process, a time for your body to relax and heal damaged and inflamed tissues. In order for this to happen your body must experience deep stages of REM and non-REM sleep. However, this is often a vicious cycle as back pain can actually cause the inability to get a good night’s rest. Here are some steps you can take this New Year to improve your sleep hygiene: • • • •
Remove electronic devices such as TV’s and cell phones from the bedroom Avoid caffeine before bed Be consistent with your bedtime Incorporate things to relax like reading or hot tea
If your neck or back pain is preventing sleep, consider evaluating your mattress and pillow to ensure you have the appropriate support your body needs while trying to rest.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by a blockage of tissue in the airway during sleep causing a quick reduction of oxygen to the entire body. This can cause a decrease of blood flow to the brain, and increase in blood pressure within the brain. OSA is a common condition in stroke patients and can be deadly.
When you have a stroke while sleeping A person may have a stroke in the middle of the night and not know for several hours. If more than 3 hours pass from the onset of symptoms, the opportunity to start medication to dissolve blood clots is lost, increasing the chances for permanent damage.
Signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include: • Excessive daytime sleepiness • Loud snoring • Abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking • Observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep • Awakening with a dry mouth or sore throat • Morning headache • Difficulty concentrating during the day

2021 Partners in Health Winter Skin Tips for your Baby or Toddler By Amy Kim, M.D.
Cold air also means drier air, and drier air means less humid air that can dry the skin out. Dr. Amy Kim of MetroDerm Atlanta wants to share winter skin tips for your baby or toddler. • Use a humidifier in your baby’s room. Humidity during the warm summer months can be greater than 50% while humidity during the cold months can drop to 10%. Less humid air pulls the moisture out of skin. Put a humidifier in your baby’s room to replace the lost humidity. • Avoid long baths. Did you know that water exposure actually dries out the skin? One might think that sitting in a warm bath would hydrate the skin, however, the opposite is true. Limit bath time for your baby or toddler to five minutes or less. • Moisturize more during the winter time! Moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize during the colder and drier winter months. This winter skin tip for your baby or toddler is one that is a must. Both baby and toddler’s skin is more vulnerable than adult skin as it is naturally thinner and more delicate. The best time to moisturize your baby or toddler’s skin is right after bath time, when slathering on a moisturizer can lock in the hydration. Remember, ointments are better than creams, and creams are better than lotions at locking in the moisture. • Protect your baby or toddler’s skin when going outside. Your baby loses much of its heat from its head, so a hat is a musthave when it is especially cold outside. Protecting your baby or toddler’s head with a hat and hands with mittens are important if your baby will be outside for an extended period. The cold and dry air can leach out the moisture from your baby or toddler’s skin and ultimately cause irritation to the unprotected skin. Protecting your baby or toddler’s skin is a necessary winter skin tip to both protect the skin from the elements, but also reminds you how layers of clothing are a practical
way to dress your baby during the winter. You want to layer up the clothing, but not too much, as to avoid a heat rash. Think of “one more.” Your baby typically requires “one more” layer of clothing than yourself. • Chapped lips or cheeks. ’Tis the season when your baby or toddler can get chapped lips or cheeks from the colder and drier air. Fragrance-free ointments are the best at preventing and soothing chapped lips or cheeks. If you know your baby or toddler will be outside in cold weather, slather on an ointment to protect them. • Spot and soothe eczema. Some atopic individuals are prone to eczema. Eczema occurs when sensitive skin gets too dry and irritated and then becomes rashy. Eczema flares are common during the winter months when the air is colder and drier. Protect eczema-prone skin with regular application of an ointment moisturizer several times during the day. Moisturizing with an ointment may be all you need to prevent or soothe a case of eczema. If an eczema flare is spotted, then moisturize even more with an ointment and consider an evaluation by your dermatologist in case a prescription medication is needed. Consider these winter skin tips for your baby or toddler this season to help keep your child’s skin healthy. Prevention is key, and these tips can help prevent skin troubles for you and your baby.
