{From The Founder} Bring On the Light Two weeks ago marked the one-year anniversary from the day we closed our business, furloughed our staff (many of whom had been with us for 20+ years) and went into lockdown mode. For me, it was surreal. Everything felt so scary and uncertain. As a mom, woman and business owner, I suddenly felt like I had so little control over what lay before me.
But there was light. We learned that we could work from home or remote locations. For me personally, this was beyond freedom. I no longer had to put on makeup and heels and go into an office every day. I could suddenly work from anywhere. It was liberating for me and for the team. We have found unique and fun ways to stay connected through the pandemic, not only with each other but with our Best Self family of readers and followers as well. When it comes down to it, we don’t often know what life will throw our way, pandemic or no pandemic. So the darkness can overwhelm us, paralyze us and shut us down—if we let it. Or we can find the light. That light comes from within us, and it is the light we find through our spirituality, our family, friends and our own positivity.
Or we can find the light. That light comes from within us, and it is the light we find through our spirituality, our family, friends and our own positivity.
{
COVID-19 has wreaked havoc for many of us, but it has also provided us with the opportunity to dig deeper and rely on our best selves to find the good in this bad situation.
{
What I came to realize is this: the pandemic has simply brought context to the reality of how little control we have over what happens in this life ... period. I learned that we never really know what may come our way. So instead, I chose to focus on what I could control and let that be the light that brought calm and strength and helped guide me through this time. I tried to work with our small business owner partners and pause contracts or defer payments to help ease financial obligations. At the same time, we were able to work with many of our vendors and create a plan to get us through the initial downturn in the business. When the landlord refused all attempts to work with us on a short-term plan for a reduced rent package, we were forced to close our office after 18 years in the same location.
At Best Self Atlanta, we are learning how to work smarter and evolve our business to meet the needs of today and beyond. Our self-imposed boundaries were removed and opened up so many avenues of creativity and thought that might have never happened. While we are still working to overcome these challenges, we are hopeful that we, along with so many of Atlanta’s small businesses, will find our way through and come out of this better and stronger. We look forward to sharing the light we have found with all of you for many years to come. To receive updates on events and great ways to help you live your best life, join our community. A Guided Tour of Atlanta Wellness
By Amelia Pavlik
Atlanta’s wellness industry is alive and thriving, with new fitness studios, whole-food-focused restaurants, medical spas and more popping up faster than you can keep up with. Separating the true pros from the trend-followers is no easy task. My City Wellness Guides are here to give you the inside scoop on the best places to get fit, eat well and indulge in some healthy self-care in Atlanta (and beyond). Here’s a peek at some of my favorite local spots:
In addition to offering fitness classes at their Buckhead studio, Stellar Bodies’ boutique (which is only at this location) has been one of my go-tos for trendsetting activewear for years. With brands ranging from Beyond Yoga® to Ultracor®, the boutique offers something for everyone. I love anything by KORAL. Their black Lustrous Leggings are perfect for going from barre to brunch. And FYI, Stellar also offers an online shop where you can receive 10% off your first order. Details: 3872 Roswell Rd., Ste. A4, Atlanta; www.stellarbodiesatl.com/boutique
Fitness Studio: SculptHouse Fans of the Megaformer (a Pilates-based machine) will love a SculptHouse class. You can opt for a sculpt-only class or try my go-to pick—CardioSculpt 360. For me, it’s the best of both worlds: resistance training plus a cardio session on curved treadmills. Post-class, don’t forget to check out the activewear boutique, which is full of luxe brands like Bala, Alala and Year of Ours. (Also, there’s a $15 first class special, so be sure to take advantage of this option when you book!) Details: www.sculpthouse.com

Spa/Beauty: Icebox Cryotherapy Looking for a less-traditional spa experience? Chill out with a treatment at Icebox Cryotherapy, which has locations throughout metro Atlanta. This cold therapy is known to help with health issues ranging from pain management to circulation problems. For three minutes, you step into a booth and are immersed in a deep nitrogenfueled cold. I can confirm that it’s a mighty chilly experience, but it’s not painful—and I felt invigorated and energized following my treatment. If you’d prefer to ease your way into cryotherapy, try one a CryoFacial, which stimulates collagen growth and reduces inflammation. Details: www.iceboxtherapy.com

Indulgent Dinner: Marcel I can’t say it any better than the website, “Marcel is a return to the days when people appreciated every moment … when love lingered over the best meals.” The ambiance at this Midtown gem is as intriguing as the sips and bites, with low lighting, dark leather and wood, and white tablecloths. Oh, and the food! I believe in a wellness routine that embraces moderation and indulgence. And Marcel is the perfect fit when I’m ready to indulge! Their menu changes with the season, but my must-orders include the clams casino and pommes dauphinoise. Every bite is like heaven on a fork. Details: 1170 Howell Mill Rd., Atlanta; www.marcelatl.com

Chronic Shoulder Pain? Tendonitis? Sprain/Strain? Solution: Bio-Regenerative Injection Therapy Because the shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body, it must balance strength, flexibility and stability. This balance can be maintained through exercises aimed at stretching and strengthening the supporting structures to avoid pain and injuries during specific activities. Problems are generally due to overuse, which weakens and destabilizes the rotator cuff. About 20% of sports injuries involve the shoulder. So what to do? Enter Bio-Sclerotic Proliferation Injection Therapy! The treatment causes the proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament tissue in the areas where it has become weak. A biological (not toxic, non steroidal) solution is used, which is injected in the suspect area. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas which then increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients and stimulates the tissue to repair itself including increased cytokine production, which are the building blocks for cartilage and other connective tissue.

3 Relationship Habits to Break to Be More Balanced and Connected Together By India Leigh
As we all go through many personal shifts, these individual shifts are often reflected in our partnerships. Make 2021 the year of moving into a more aware, conscious, elevated form of partnership. And as you step into this year with the one you love, it is key that you choose to leave these three mindbased relationship habits in the past.
Faultfinding and using “you” statements. Though we may not always realize it, we are conditioned to find fault outside of ourselves. As part of our human survival thought patterns, we inherit and learn ways of seeking out the sources of problems and eliminating them in order to make our lives easier. Sadly, no one is safe from the minds’ faultfinding radar—not even (and sometimes especially) the ones we love most. But even if there is a mistake or an imbalance that needs to be corrected in a relationship, blaming the other perpetuates old dynamics and destructive cycles, rather than strengthening the partnership. When it comes down to it, anytime we hear ourselves starting with “You …” we can know that we’re heading in the direction of faultfinding and blame rather than understanding and trust.
Speaking from the mind rather than the heart. Love is supposed to be the domain of the heart, but far too often we allow our minds to run the show. Pay attention to the words you’re using when you talk to your partner. “I think …”, “It’s just that …” “OK, but …” and “I/You just don’t get it …” are all telltale phrases that you are coming from a mental or ego, fear-driven place rather than the heart. “I
feel …”, “When I hear/experience this, I feel …” and “I have a wound around this that is being poked right now and I am feeling …” are the magic words of bestselfatlanta.com
0421_016-017_Mindfulness + Joy.indd 17
vulnerability that create a safe space for everyone to open up and connect, rather than being reactive and defensive, fearing a mind battle.
Putting the need to be right above seeing the other’s perspective. The human mind is very dualistic—conditioned to see right and wrong, good and bad—and wants only to be on the winning (survival) side. The next time you find yourself in conflict with your partner, say to yourself, “I don’t need to be right, only to express how I feel and hear how they feel.” This will help you lower your ego weapons, which will, in turn, help your partner lower theirs. Remember, it took both you and the other person a lifetime (and maybe a few before that, in addition to those of your ancestors) to develop your unique perspective on life and the inner wounds you have endured. It may take the rest of this life to explore and share them fully, but the reward of deep connection is well worth the journey. Spirit intuitive reader, clairvoyant and coach India Leigh empowers others to come into more connection with their own divine creative power, aligning their energy, thoughts, words and actions with their greatest good and highest purpose. www.indialeigh.com

{Fitness + Nutrition} Eating with Erica Shares 8 Healthy Places to Grab a Bite Around Atlanta By Erica Key As a full-time food blogger, I know how important a healthy lifestyle is. I feel better when I eat better. I have more energy and my mood is much better, just ask my husband. Fortunately, when I’m looking to dine out, Atlanta has plenty of healthy and delicious options to choose from.
1. Local Green Atlanta. Zachary “Big Zak” Wallace opened Local Green Atlanta with a mission to bring healthy, affordable food to Atlanta’s Westside. A well-known name in Atlanta’s music scene, you’ll see music references sprinkled throughout his menu such as the “3 Stack” Cauliflower Taco, which is a 100% vegan dish with roasted cauliflower, trinity mix (onion, bell pepper, celery), diced tomatoes, avocado and a red cabbage garnish with cilantro-lime “3 STACK” CAULIFLOWER TACO sauce and a Sriracha-mayo drizzle and the “Slim Shady,” a sandwich of sliced avocado, fried egg white, sautéed mushrooms and Sriracha-mayo drizzle on 21-grain toast. Details: www.localgreenatlanta.com

3. Buena Vida Tapas & Sol. When I am eating clean or I have friends who have dietary restrictions, I make sure to visit Buena Vida Tapas & Sol. It has plenty of appetizing vegan and vegetarian options to choose from. A menu must-try is the Eggplant Montadito. The crispy flatbread is layered with smoked eggplant, arugula, cilantro, sesame brittle and vegan aioli. This dish is divine. Details: 385 N. 2021 Partners in Health Moms and Back Pain By Marly Dows-Martinez, M.D.
Being a mom fills my life with joy! But with that joy can sometimes come back pain often caused by all the new movements that come with being a new mom—lifting and carrying the baby, picking up the baby in their infant carrier and hauling around the heavy diaper bag. Here are some of the causes of back pain for moms and tips to help alleviate (and prevent) back pain as you care for your little one.
Carrying the baby
When carrying the baby around the house, try alternating holding the baby and carrying them in a sling. The carrier should have two straps to help evenly distribute the baby’s weight. When carrying the infant carrier, use both hands and keep it close to your body.
Lifting the baby
You will find yourself lifting the baby from their crib or the floor and often times will find your back in an awkward position. When lifting from the floor, squat down and hold the baby close to you, then straighten your legs as you stand up. When lifting the baby from the crib, stand with your feet hip-width apart, move the baby toward you and bend your knees as you lift your baby.
Posture
When you feed your baby, keep your back supported. You can use pillows, armrests or a nursing pillow to keep your back supported and in a straighter posture versus slouching. It is helpful to think about maintaining a neutral spinal posture. To help counteract the slouched forward posture you can perform back and neck extensions.
What can you do to help with your back pain?
Stretching
Throughout the day, stretching
can help you alleviate your neck and back pain. Simply stretching backward and raising your arms upward toward the ceiling several times a day will help to alleviate some of your back pain.
Yoga and Pilates
Once you are cleared by your obstetrician, usually about six weeks postpartum, yoga and Pilates can both be helpful in helping with your back pain.
Massage
Treat yourself to a postpartum massage. It helps to promote relaxation and relieve stress, both of which can help decrease your back pain.
Spine Physical Therapy
If your back or neck pain is persistent, seeing a spine therapist can help identify the cause of your pain. They can create a personalized exercise program to help alleviate your pain and teach you strategies to strengthen your core spine and abdominal muscles.
When to see a doctor
Most back pain after you have your baby is caused by strains or sprains. However, sometimes your ongoing back pain may be caused by a more serious issue. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should see your physician to be evaluated: a. Pain does not work with the home remedies listed above b. Pain gets worse at night c. You experience numbness and tingling in your legs d. You have unexpected, rapid weight loss e. You have an unexplained fever f. You experience loss of bowel or bladder control I hope these tips are helpful to relieve your back pain as you care for your baby. If you continue to have pain, the Physiatrists and Spine Therapists at Resurgens Spine Center are here to help you! Marly N. 2021 Partners in Health Happy Men Are Healthy Men By Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA
We often hear that money can’t buy happiness. Of course, when the basic needs of life are unmet, money can often alleviate unhappiness. But true happiness comes from a state of satisfaction rather than an ability to buy more. However, money is not the only currency with which we can “buy” happiness. In fact, the most valuable currencies are good health and time. Furthermore, not only will physical well-being lead to happiness, but emotional contentment can bolster our physical health. As for the currency of time, we’ll save that for a future Partners in Health installment on productivity for enhancing men’s health. For now, here are seven things that you can do right now to make your life happier and healthier:
Practice mindfulness—Those who have heard of mindfulness often associate it with meditation. However, mindfulness can take many forms. In its simplest form, mindfulness involves taking a few minutes every day to create self-awareness and awareness of one’s surroundings. By focusing on the present, we relieve the anguish associated with past stressors and future deadlines.
Make a list—Every journey starts with a plan. This weekend, sit down and brainstorm a list of ten or more things that you would like to experience. Then commit to the top two items. Give yourself a deadline and share with a friend or family member who will hold you accountable.
Put it on the calendar—If it’s on the calendar, it is much more likely to be accomplished. Place all of the above items in time slots (yes, even your bedtime). If you miss an “event,” always reschedule it. Calendars work better than endless to-do lists.
Form a team—During the pandemic, we often find ourselves isolated. Sure, we have Zoom calls to fulfill obligations, but these encounters are often not fulfilling. Find others who enjoy the same hobbies. Join a walking group. Form a book club. However simple, togetherness leads to fulfillment that could never be achieved alone. In the words of John Lennon, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” Go it alone—The pandemic has also created an increased demand for our resources. We need to create daily time for taking care of ourselves. Try to set aside 30 minutes or more in the middle of the day to take yourself away from your daily distractions. You will more than make up that time with increased productivity.
Go to sleep—Are tired people grumpy? Ensure that you consistently have a full night’s rest. People who are sleepdeprived have a five-times higher risk of depression. Exercise—Even a little exercise will elevate your mood. Make it a habit.
Many men neglect their physical health. When it comes to emotional health, it’s often a joke. However, unhappiness is no laughing matter. Look for my article on “Balancing Stress for Better Men’s Health” in the next issue. Scott D. Miller, MD, MBA, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital. Can Hormones Help Me Deal with My Stress? By Paul E. Cox, MD, MS
The past year has been one of the most stressful most of us can remember. The changes that have accompanied the coronavirus pandemic have turned our world upside down. Working from home, virtual school, lockdowns, masks, political and social unrest are just a few of the things we have all been dealing with over the past year. As a physician, I have seen and personally experienced the increased stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, anger, depression and other issues that are plaguing us right now. I can also tell you that my patients who have their hormones optimized are faring better as a whole than many of their peers. I have had many patients tell me how grateful they are not to be experiencing additional stress due to menopause, perimenopause or in the case of my male patients, testosterone deficiency. They also say they are able to be more calm, flexible and deal with the changes of the past year better than they think they would have otherwise.
challenges that we face in this new world. What I will say is a body that is optimized hormonally can function, process and react in the way it was meant to when challenged with adversity. We all want to feel better, and while not a cure, hormone therapy very well may be a step in the right direction for you. Board-certified in anti-aging and family medicine, Paul E. 2021 Partners in Health Don’t Lose Sleep Over Snoring
How to choose the best oral appliance / mouthguard for snoring and sleep apnea.
By Marianna Kovitch, DMD, DABDSM
There are over 150 FDA-approved oral appliances for the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring. A diagnosis along with a sleep study helps determine what kind of appliance will work best for you. It is also important to note the many factors that go into fabricating the right appliance for you, such as existing veneers, crowns, periodontal disease, oral health and future dental work that may be needed. Five reasons to see a specialist for a custom fit oral appliance for sleep apnea and snoring rather than a ready-made one from a store or online: • Custom designed—A trained professional will take a digital scan or physical impression of your teeth and send it to a specialized lab technician, compared to a boil and bite style which alleges to fit the average person. • Comfort—The lab can create the smallest type of appliance with a variety of adjusting mechanisms to make it comfortable to sleep in every night. • Efficacy—The lower jaw needs to be cradled at a certain horizontal and vertical position for the appliance to work without causing muscle or jaw pain.
• Compliance—Many people stop wearing their ready-made appliance due to its bulkiness, poor fit and discomfort. • Jaw and tooth movement—Risks associated with wearing a mandibular device include tooth movement, jaw pain, muscle pain, and bite changes. A custom-made appliance is designed to minimize the possibility of these risks; however, it is important to follow up with your specialist annually to avert these problems. Ready-made appliances offer the potential advantages of being easily available at a relatively low cost. A custom appliance will be more costly but will provide you with optimal quality sleep, resulting in more focus, better energy and improved overall health. In this case, you truly do get what you pay for. What to Know and Where to Go For E-Bikes in Atlanta Your guide to the mode of transportation that is getting all the buzz By Alexandra McCray
Whether you’re walking on a path, out for a drive or simply relaxing on your front porch, it’s hard not to notice the uptick in bike riding in metro Atlanta. However, some people wish they had a boost when getting around the city's hills on two wheels. Because of this, electric bikes, also known as e-bikes, are becoming a popular choice for riders who desire assistance. Read on for an overview of how they work and insight into what to consider when selecting one for yourself.

E-Bike Basics
The most common way e-bikes provide extra oomph is through a pedal-assist system (PAS). “When you pedal, the motor kicks in and assists you at whatever level you have set,” Mark Scarbrough, store manager at Stone Mountain Bike Company, says. “It feels like someone is running behind you and giving you a push. … It’s an incredible feeling,” says Greg Godwin, co-owner of Pedego Alpharetta. An e-bike can just use PAS technology, or it can include a throttle on the handlebar as well. You can use it to move the bike forward without pedaling, which can be helpful to get up a hill or get going again after stopping, explains Hunger.
Motors and Mechanics The type of motor an e-bike has is also an important factor in the kind of assistance it can give. There are two main options. A hub-drive motor is in the center of the front or rear wheel and works independently of bicycle gearing, while mid-drive motors are where the pedals are and work with the gearing, explains Edward Guzman, president and owner of GForce Electric Bike & Scooter.

E-Bike FAQ Do I need a license? According to PeopleForBikes, in Georgia, you do not need a special registration, license or insurance for an e-bike the way you would for a car. Should I wear a helmet? Yes, you should follow the same safety measures you would while riding any other type of bike. Are there age restrictions? E-bikes are often designed for adults and teenagers. People younger than 15 can’t operate a class 3 e-bike in Georgia but can be a passenger. Everyone on a class 3 e-bike must also wear a helmet. You can learn more about Georgia’s e-bike classes at www.peopleforbikes.org. Where can I find riding groups? The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition offers a True Beginners course throughout the year where grown-up newbie riders can connect and learn. You can also visit www. bicyclegeorgia.com to find bicycle clubs around the state or ask your local bike shop if they do ride groups.

E-bikes are essentially regular bikes with an electric motor, rechargeable battery, a controller, which acts as the brain of an electric bike, and a digital display. They can take some or all the work out of pedaling, explains Eric Hunger, owner of ElectroBike. You can outfit them with accessories and choose from an array of styles—mountain, beach cruiser, adult tricycle, folding, etc.

RIDERS ENJOY EXPLORING ON MAGNUM BIKES, WHICH IS BASED IN UTAH.
Photos courtesy of Magnum Bikes, photography by Christopher Creveling.
Mid-drive motors are more advanced and intuitive than hub-drives, which can lead to a ride that feels smoother and makes them ideal for climbing steep hills, mountain biking or other strenuous riding. Their efficiency also translates into the ability to cover more miles per charge. The location of a mid-drive motor can also create a more-balanced ride that is reminiscent of a conventional bike since the extra weight is centered and not focused on the front or back. However, Pugh notes that you may not even notice the difference. One thing to consider about mid-drives is that their firmware (technology inside the controller) tends to need updates. Hub-drive motors can certainly help you get up hills but can be better suited for recreational riding and flat surfaces. They are also much more affordable than middrives. Additionally, hub-drives can be easier on the mechanical components of a bike than mid-drives.
What to Expect The first thought that comes to most minds when contemplating e-bikes is how far you can go on a single charge. Factors such as the terrain, hilliness, power of the motor, battery size, your weight (plus any extra), and assist use all play a part. Per charge, you may cover 20 to 45 miles with a hub-drive and 50 to 120 on a mid-drive.
bestselfatlanta.com
0421_028-033_EBikes.indd 31
No matter how far you ride, though, using an e-bike doesn’t mean sacrificing the health benefits of cycling. You can ramp up or down how much work you do by changing the amount assist you utilize. Plus, Stephen Spring, education and outreach programs manager for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, says, “People that have e-bikes are going two and three times farther. So, if you’re going two or three times farther and you’re only getting one-third of the benefits, then it ends up equaling out in the long run.” Once you’ve made it to your destination, charging up shouldn’t be a problem since you can use standard outlets. It can take two to three hours to fill a completely drained battery or four to five or longer, says Hunger. The difference in charge time is based on the amp-hour capacity of your battery, says Pugh. He says to think of it as your battery’s gas tank, meaning the higher the capacity, the more time it can take to recharge. You can cut down that time by charging after every ride, Godwin adds. The electric components of an e-bike don’t require extra servicing either. Stick to routine mechanical maintenance such as lubricating the chain, replacing brake pads and getting one to two tuneups a year, avoid extreme temperatures, and steer clear of heavy downpours and large puddles to ensure your ride stays in tiptop shape. Hunger also advises keeping tire pressure above the minimum. And while you

often can take your e-bike to a conventional bike shop for mechanical maintenance, Pugh recommends taking it to the shop you bought it from or, if you purchased it online, to a shop that sells the brand you have.
Finding the Right Ride Before making your purchase, it’s important to ask yourself some key questions. Here are some common ones and the answers to them to help guide your decision.
How much am I prepared to spend? Determining your budget is the first step to discovering which e-bike is best for you. Prices are based on the quality, size and power of parts, the brand and more. E-bikes also often use costly batteries with lithium-ion or a version of it, says Guzman. “The sweet spot is $1,500. That’s usually what people spend. Some people spend more. Some people spend less,” Guzman says. Mid-drive e-bikes start at $2,500, while anything below that will be a hub-drive, notes Hunger.
Where to Ride Before you set out for a ride, it’s important to know what class your e-bike is and the associated rules. PeopleForBikes offers information on Georgia’s e-bike classes and current legislation. Luckily, most e-bikes fall under the same rules and regulations as regular bikes and can be ridden in many of the same places. You should still check the rules for your area first, though. Here are some recommendations from our article sources regarding riding locations: • Your neighborhood
• Stone Mountain Park and Stone Mountain city • Big Creek Greenway • Atlanta BeltLine For more information on e-bikes and updated news, visit www.peopleforbikes.org/ locations/georgia. MAGNUM PREMIUM 48 HIGH STEP

ELECTRIC BIKE RENTALS ARE A GREAT WAY TO TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.
What should I know about budget-friendly options? The web may boast cheaper options, but they can be of questionable quality and come with drawbacks like a 100% steel frame which dramatically increases a bike’s weight. You also may not be able to get the e-bike serviced at a shop near you. Hunger and Guzman agree that turning a conventional bike into an e-bike or building your own are not smart ways to save money either. A better idea is to consider renting until you’re ready to take the plunge. Many stores, including Atlanta Bicycle Barn, Stone Mountain Bike Company, Pedego Alpharetta, and GForce Electric Bike & Scooter have rental programs. Spring also suggests Helbiz, a vehicle-share company servicing Atlanta that offers e-bike rentals.
Photos courtesy of Pedego Electric Bikes.
How long of a warranty can I expect? It depends on the brand and manufacturer, but it’s typical to see one to three years on electric parts, while
other components can vary, says Guzman. If you do buy an e-bike online or from a smaller brand, he advises choosing a company with a network of shops where you can get your e-bike serviced under warranty.
What kind of riding do I want to do? At the end of the day, an e-bike should enhance your life, so choose one you’re going to enjoy using and that makes sense for your needs. “If it’s day-to-day commuting, you could go with a rear- [hub-] or mid-drive. If it’s very casual and you just want to ride on the weekends, you could probably go with a rear- [hub-] drive at the entry-level price point that’s gonna allow you to shift gears,” says Scarbrough. You should also consider how much you want to exert yourself and how you want to sit, adds Hunger. “With mid-drives, you’re gonna have to put a little extra effort into it typically,” he says. Once you’ve made your selection, you can zip away and join Atlanta’s booming electric and nonelectric bicycle population.

10-cake kits include two bottles of syrup and a resealable pack of pancake powder for less than ten bucks (and pair perfectly with Ford’s cookbook).

Sending Love from a Social Distance Many Atlanta-area assisted living centers are still closed to family and friends, requiring staff to get a little creative to celebrate moms this year. “We’re their surrogate families right now,” says Traci Wade, activities director at Brighton Gardens of Buckhead, currently planning their Mother’s Day Tea. “We want to make sure days like this are extra special and that they feel cared for and loved. We’ll go above and beyond to make this tea reminiscent and fancy because it’s always something they look forward to.”
She recommends celebrating virtually as well, or sending gifts, photos and cards, and even coordinating with staff to drive by with decorated cars, homemade signs and balloons to brighten up a socially-distanced visit.

PROF I LE
Welcome to Chef Mimmo The Atlanta Chef Takes on Spanish and Mexican Cuisine in His New Buckhead Re By Alexandra Shimalla
T
he first time Chef Mimmo Alboumeh walked the vacant space on 1820 Peachtree Road, it was already his. Not only was the area laid out perfectly, but the square-footage also held his lucky number, seven.
“When I walked into this place, I felt magic,” he says. “It’s 5,002 square feet, and five and two equal seven, so I said I was getting this space no matter what.” His passion and determination paid off, as that address now houses his new restaurant Botica, which opened in January. Although opening during a pandemic wasn’t ideal, Mimmo, who has had a hand in opening several other restaurants, welcomed the challenge. “We’ve been blessed,” he says when asked about the community’s response. “People will literally stop me and thank me for opening. It gives you that [sense of] encouragement—like I’ve done the right thing.” By his estimate, Botica has entertained around 3,000 customers a week. “Also, I have a great team,” he adds, crediting his team of 70 employees whom he considers family, a group of which has been with him for over 14 years. “I call them my A-team.”
IT’S KIND OF LIKE A COMBINATION THAT ALLOWS ME TO PUT TWO OR THREE CULTURES TOGETHER. I CAN COMBINE
THE SPANISH AND MEXICAN [CULTURES]… What does botica mean? The word has roots in many cultures, much like Mimmo himself, who was born in Lebanon but spent much of his childhood in Italy and Spain. Sharing origins with the French “boutique” and Spanish “bodega,” botica loosely translates to drugstore or general store, where you can find a little bit of everything. CHEF MIMMO COOKS PAELLA ON THE PATIO EVERY WEDNESDAY.

“It’s kind of like a combination that allows me to put two or three cultures together,” Mimmo explains. “I can combine the Spanish and Mexican [cultures] without being like the more traditional [restaurant] names. And I like the sound of it—it’s sexy.”

“I WANTED TO CREATE MORE ALFRESCO DINING,” SAY MIMMO, OF BOTICA’S SPACIOUS PATIO.
The food at Botica is also a winning combination. Inspired by street-tacos from his trips to Mexico, Mimmo works his magic to meld them together with the flavors of Spanish cuisine. Think combinations like Spanish meatballs with salsa marinara and braised lamb tacos with garbanzo beans.
A self-proclaimed perfectionist, Mimmo took six months to create the menu. “When you are very passionate about things, you never settle for ‘it’s good,’” he explains. And you can taste that passion in the ingredients Mimmo uses, from the locally sourced, seasonal vegetables to the high-quality meats that are smoked in-house on the Big Green Egg.
Spanish Octopus
(L TO R): SPANISH ALBONDIGAS, LAMB BIRRIA TACOS, SPRINGER CHICKEN TAMALES CANASTA
But delicious food is only part of what makes up Botica; the rest is atmosphere. “These cultures want to give you a part of what they do, which is to share their love and passion with you,” he says, explaining that dining in other cultures, including Lebanese culture, goes beyond serving food; it’s about creating a shared experience. “That’s the most important thing and the same vibe I wanted to create.” Having called Atlanta home for over 25 years, Mimmo believes wholeheartedly in supporting the communities he serves. He regularly hosts charitable events and participates in signature fundraising events around Atlanta. He is also actively involved with Frank Ski Kids Foundation, T.J. Martell Foundation, Second Helpings Atlanta, The Giving Kitchen and many others. Botica, www.eatbotica.com, 1820 Peachtree Rd. NW., Atlanta, (404) 228-6358. “Spain is known for having the best octopus in the world,” Chef Mimmo explains. So naturally, he had to include it in Botica’s menu line-up. First boiled in a brine of wild herbs, spices and Spanish sherry, the octopus is then chargrilled to perfection before being sliced up thin and served over a fresh batch of patatas bravas (Spanish potatoes). The appetizer has been a hit with customers, but the dish can be difficult to create for the inexperienced chef. Good thing Mimmo is an expert. “It’s a challenge. An extreme challenge,” he admits. “The difference between [cooking] a five-pound and seven-pound octopus is only three minutes.” BEST SELF ATLANTA

BEFORE: “Lauralyn has the most beautiful, icy-blue eyes that I’ve ever seen, so we focused on them,” says Nisha. AFTER: Because of Lauralyn’s vibrant blue eyes, Nisha used gold, a complementary color, to truly make the hue pop. She went with a gold shimmer on the lids, adding Anastasia Beverly Hills’ bronzer as another layer of depth. Byron’s hair added to the soft, elegant look with fun body curls.

Raya created a gold smoky eye and a pop of burgundy on Sonya’s lips to celebrate her youthful spirit. TRUSTED TOOLS: Raya: “I’m obsessed with mascara, especially Too Faced Better Than Sex. It changes a client’s demeanor and confidence in such a short period of time.”
Springtime Fresh Model:
Lauren Loper
BEFORE: Lauren wanted a fresh look that would also cover up her age spots. AFTER: This fresh, bright look that screams springtime was created by sticking with bright pops of color on Lauren’s cheeks. Says Maria: “I used bright but neutral eye colors and made sure to keep all dark colors in the crease and not on the lid, which can age and darken your face.” Maria also used a foundation that provides great coverage without looking cakey and aging skin. The look was finalized with a basic blowout featuring soft curls.

TRUSTED TOOLS: Maria says her go-to is “Glo Skin Beauty, a line of natural, mineral makeup that helps with skincare and doesn’t have any adverse effects.” Kaya swears by Unite 7Seconds leave-in conditioner, which she says anyone from a busy mom to a professional hairstylist can use every day and have wonderful results in seven seconds. {Give Back} A Young Start to Helping Others - Chris “CJ” Matthews by Melanie Preis Chris “CJ” Matthews shows the world that kindness and good works have no age minimum. This Atlanta teen began his philanthropic project, Blankies 4 My Buddies at the tender age of 5 and has been pursuing his passion for helping children ever since. The inspiration to do good started eight years ago after CJ and his family experienced a pregnancy loss. CJ struggled to cope with the tragedy and comfort eventually came in the form of helping others. CJ says, “My mom asked me when I was five, ‘If you could help kids, what would you do?’ I told her that I never wanted for kids to feel lonely or sad like I did. She gave me ideas of things that would give immediate comfort to a kid, and I picked blankets.” Blankies 4 My Buddies is a way to help children dealing with traumatic situations.
CHRIS “CJ” MATTHEWS

“If someone is scared in bed at night, what do they do? Cover their head with their blankets,” says CJ. “If you’re cold, you cover yourself up. A blanket gives a sense of security, like a hug, so [Blankies 4 My Buddies] was a logical solution.”
“A blanket gives a sense of security, like a hug, so [Blankies 4 My Buddies] was a logical solution.”
And through it all, CJ pushed to keep Blankies 4 My Buddies running during COVID-19. He created “comfort bags” as part of an emergency effort to stimulate generosity for those affected by the pandemic. These kid-focused bags hold hygiene products, snacks, journals, books, toys, his trademark blankets and a COVID-19 time capsule packet to bring comfort to kids sheltering in place. CJ and his family donated them to local shelters and foster kids, as well as delivering some to their local councilman to hand out.
CJ, an eighth grader at KIPP South Fulton Academy, lives with his parents and 4-year-old brother, Kollin. As a family, they have started to develop additional programs beyond blanket donations as a way to increase their charitable reach and continue the work of community betterment.

“I would tell other kids who want to make a difference to find something that they really care about and just do it,” he says. “No act of kindness is too small.” If you would like to help CJ continue on his mission of helping others, visit his site at www.blankies4mybuddies.org.

“The past year has been tough,” says CJ. “Of course, a blanket can’t protect you from your fears or help you overcome hard times. It is merely a symbol of comfort, of love, of security.”

What Are Ways I Can Whiten My Smile? Teeth whitening can drastically change your smile and improve your self-esteem. Treatments can be done either in-office or at home. In-office whitening is done quickly with excellent results—lightening your teeth up to 5-6 shades, producing faster and better results. Custom whitening trays with gels are an effective at home option. Depending on the strength, clear trays are usually worn for a few hours a day or overnight. This product purchased from your dentist has a stronger prescription strength whitening agent than in kits available over the counter. While teeth whitening is a popular option, permanent whiter teeth can be achieved with porcelain veneers. Veneers can be used to correct many smile issues, including improving shape and discoloration and are more convenient and affordable than ever. Schedule your complimentary smile analysis to see what can be the best option for you!

How Can Chiropractic Care Help My Arm and Leg Pain? As with any condition, you want to start with treating the most common and typical cause of the pain and symptoms first. Misalignment (subluxations) of the vertebrae in the neck and lower back are responsible for the vast majority of arm and leg pain. When bones or discs are out of position, and lose their ability to move properly, they often cause irritation to the surrounding tissues, including the nerves. Many patients are surprised when they see that the nerves in our body travel from the spine all the way to the ends of our fingertips and toes. As a result, injuries to the vertebrae in the spine can create the sensation of pain anywhere along our arms and legs. Through this pattern of treatment, patients at our clinic have experienced high levels of success through chiropractic treatment.
