Did You Know? Vasectomy is a safe, simple and effective birth control method. It is one of most common and popular means for contraception around the world. A vasectomy does not affect a man’s sexual drive, pleasure or function. A vasectomy has no effect on masculinity, only the ability to father a child. The vasectomy procedure usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Recovery time is quick; men return to nearly all usual activities typically within a week. It is almost 100% effective and is intended to be permanent. However, vasectomies can be reversed in certain cases.

Get off the Treadmill I don’t mean literally to get off the treadmill. I am referring to the “treadmill of life.” Unlike the treadmill for exercise, the “treadmill of life” can often be harmful to our physical and emotional well-being. When the day-in, day-out lists of chores, to do’s, and seemingly endless emails, texts and phone calls become your life, it is time to regroup and get some balance and perspective. How do you accomplish that when it feels like you can’t stop or your world will fall apart? My suggestion is - just stop. Meet a friend for a movie in the middle of the day. Stay in your PJs all day and say “no” to technology. Take a trip. Get a massage. Just take yourself out of the typical day and put yourself in a place where you can break free from your daily routine. It may be for an hour, a day or weeks, but just do it. For years I have wanted to visit Australia but have been saying “I don’t have time” or “it is not in my budget right now.” Motivated by the desire to see my son who has been living in Australia and knowing he would not be home for the holidays, I bravely made my move. The day before Thanksgiving I flew 24 hours to Sydney. It was so liberating and refreshing to get away and look at things from another vantage point. While you don’t have to be on the other side of the world, it is important to take a break. Getting off the “treadmill of life” can be as simple as getting on the treadmill at the gym. So, take a second and regroup. It’s time to regain balance with a new perspective in the New Year. All the best,

My Best List Heirloom Market BBQ – On the outside, this place may not look like much, but keep going because it’s about to get really good. The delicious smells coming from their kitchen are not to be believed! With one chef from Texas and the other from South Korea, you know you are in for a culinary treat. My favorite was the pulled pork sandwich, which was savory and had a hint of spicy Korean flavor. Details: 2243 Akers Mill Road, Atlanta, GA, (770) 612-2502, www.heirloommarketbbq.com
Chiro Care Anti-Pain Cream – I have tried many sports creams, but this unique product really helps with my back pain. It is good for sore muscles and has natural ingredients like EMU oil and menthol to soothe and revive. It’s also greaseless and stainless. $18.97 Details: Meta Labs LLC, Alpharetta, GA, (800) 790-8820, www.metalabsllc.com

Yurbuds – I have a problem with headphones. They either don’t stay in my ears or they are very uncomfortable. I was delighted when a friend gave me Yurbuds for my birthday. Developed by a triathlete, they are soft, comfortable and have moldable ear loops so they stay put. The sound quality is awesome. Plus, their ergonomic design is sweat and water-resistant. $29.99 Details: Your local Target, www.yurbuds.com

Pick of the Month Growing up in Hawaii and Arizona meant I spent a lot of time outdoors. Naturally, I was thrilled when I discovered a new product line that uses ingredients indigenous to Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. Sia Botanics Prickly Pear Collection uses the cactus’ antioxidants to fight free radical damage. I never imagined that one day prickly pear would be touted as the next pomegranate or acai nature cure. Its juice and seed oil contains high levels of betalains, a class of superantioxidants that help reduce inflammation and speed cellular turnover. These anti-aging products do not contain sulfates or skin-irritating fragrances and the company is passionate about skin care. Explore new ways to get more out of life
A Private Island Getaway By Intisar Seraaj-Sabree
You don’t have to be rich or famous to stay on a private island. Just three hours away from Atlanta, Reed Bingham State Park offers a uniquely fun place to relax, exercise and soak up the sun. This recently opened camping area is located on Eagle Island, a small tract of land in the middle of the park’s 375-acre lake. Campers can reach this private island by paddling just 15 minutes from a dock in the main state park. Kayaks and canoes are available for rent from the park or you can bring your own. Surrounded by trees, the Eagle Island campsite offers shade and privacy from nearby boaters and onlookers. Although small, the island comfortably fits up to 30 campers. There are also grills and picnic tables available to cook up a feast. Try fishing, go swimming or explore the hiking trails.

For those who enjoy a more modern campground, simply stay on the mainland where hot showers and bathrooms are available. Whether on the campgrounds of Reed Bingham State Park, or on Eagle Island, you are sure to have a wonderful outdoor adventure. Reed Bingham State Park will host several events next month including a Georgia Arbor Day celebration on Feb. 9 with native tree planting, educational programs and tree crafts. Then on Feb. 16 there will be a Backyard Bird Count where bird watchers of all ages can participate. Bingham State Park’s new Eagle Island campsite is $60, and rental canoes or kayaks are $25 for the duration of stay. Reservations are required. Take the Plunge Soar to new heights at 120 mph from 14,000 feet in the air. Get a bird’s eye view of Georgia for the first time with Skydive Georgia. Don’t worry about opening the parachute on time, as the professionals at Skydive Georgia will accompany first-time skydivers. Tandem skydiving is the most popular form of skydiving for first-timers. Divers will freefall for about 70 seconds, then enjoy a smooth-sailing canopy ride for seven to nine minutes. Strap up and feel the excitement and adrenaline rush through your body as you explore the atmosphere. Details: 493 Airport Road, Cedartown, GA, (770) 684-3483, www.skydivegeorgia.com/first-skydive

Q
Why should I get Botox in my 30s, 40s or earlier?
Think about wearing linen pants. The more you move, the worse the wrinkles in the fabric become. Your skin is no different. Each time you frown, smile, squint or move your skin, microscopic creases are created that become deep wrinkles over time. Getting Botox before these deep wrinkles have formed prevent you from creating the movement that causes the wrinkle in the first place.

Why do women have so much trouble sleeping after menopause? Menopause is the phase in a woman’s life when the ovaries no longer produce estrogen. Estrogen has many functions, and an important one is allowing women to get into the deepest phase of sleep. Without estrogen, sleep is disrupted and there are more nights of tossing and turning. There are many different sleep aids available from the prescription varieties to over-the-counter options. Some over-thecounter products such as antihistamines and melatonin may help. Remember that sleep is the time when our bodies relax and regenerate.

What is the difference between a sprain and a strain ? What are the signs of both injuries? They are injuries to different parts of the body. Sprains occur when you stretch or tear ligaments which connect your bones. A strain is an injury to your muscle or tendon which connects muscles to bones. The degree of pain you suffer from a sprain or strain depends on the severity of the injury. Pain, swelling and inflammation are common with both injuries. If you suffer a strain, you may also experience cramping, muscle weakness and muscle spasms. Severe injuries may cause you to lose function in the affected area.

What are milia ? Milia are small, white, firm bumps commonly found on the face. These can occur at any age, including infancy. Milia found on babies usually go away on their own but adults often require treatment. It is best to see a dermatologist for treatment because attempting to remove them yourself can result in a scar. Dermatologists will often lance them with a sterile needle and use a comedone extractor to remove them. The physician may also prescribe a topical cream to use at home.
What is the difference between pain management and wellness care ? The difference between wellness care and pain management is that traditional care is symptombased, while wellness care is to correct the underlying functional distortion/stressor allowing the body to heal itself. The combination of both streams will improve health dramatically. Inna Trakhtenberg, DC Founder of Wellness Plus Clinic

A Lifelong Struggle As the daughter of an army colonel, Carney spent much of her childhood moving from place to place. “I was born in Alaska, but we moved every couple of years,” she explains. “I lived in Germany for six years, but my weight problem really started when we moved back to Georgia in first grade. By then I was the poster child for childhood obesity.” Her sedentary lifestyle didn’t help matters either. “When we came back from Germany, I became fascinated with TV commercials, variety shows and Sesame Street,” she says. “I watched a lot of television, which contributed to my weight issue. But I always had a love for it (television). My dad’s father said I should be in news because I love telling stories.”
All Roads Lead to Atlanta While Carney attended Georgia State University as a Music Industry major, she took an internship at Motown Records. It was during this time that she also began taking acting classes. “Because I worked in marketing at the label, I was able to market myself,” she says. “I specialized in TV commercials. I was in my twenties when I decided I really liked TV more than any other medium.” While her acting career would eventually take her to New York and Los Angeles, Carney always felt a connection to the Peach State. “For some reason I’m always drawn to Atlanta when I need to regroup,” she says. “In terms of career, I’m an Atlanta-made career girl. I learned the ropes here, and got all the tools I needed to go to New York and LA to work in television.”
But slowly, the reality began to set it for the young actress. “At one point, I was getting sent home from jobs because I couldn’t fit in the clothes since I lied on my size card,” she says. “Then I started having back problems - when I stood up, my back hurt.” Carney was back in LA when she finally went to see a doctor. “When the nurse weighed me, I expected it to say 160 because I was wearing socks,” she says with a laugh. “Then it went to 240. I thought something was wrong with the scale. Then I had a moment of whoa, isn’t that what heavyweight boxers weigh? Why don’t I know I weigh 240 pounds?”
The Aha Moment In addition to her weight gain, Carney had noticed some other alarming symptoms that she couldn’t explain. “I was losing too much hair, my cycle was erratic, my skin wasn’t like it used to be and I was putting on more weight in my midsection,” she says. “I wasn’t putting the symptoms together, but the doctor diagnosed me with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).” After performing an ultrasound, that doctor determined that Carney had 30 to 40 cysts on each ovary. He promptly put her on medication to control her PCOS, but Carney would also need to get a handle on her weight if she had any hope of regaining control of her health. “On my way home I stopped at a gas station and had an ‘aha’ moment,” she says. “I was debating over which gas type to use, and then I asked myself, ‘How do I spend more time debating over the fuel I put in my car than the fuel I put in my body?’”
A Wake Up Call
A New Focus
Carney set out for New York to pursue more roles in TV commercials, but her weight continued to spiral out of control. “If you’d have asked me what I weighed at an audition, I’d say 150 pounds because in my head, I did,” she says. “I knew I was big boned, but I never believed I was obese.”
Carney packed up her life, got a studio apartment in Atlanta and decided to focus on her health full time. “I realized that it doesn’t matter how much work I get if I can’t be the best version of myself.” But first she would need to break some old habits. “Growing up, we ate out four to five times a week,” she says.

“I grew up as a convenience eater, and I didn’t know how to prepare meals. When I was hungry, I just ordered food.”

So she armed herself with diet books to educate herself on healthy eating. Then a friend gave her a copy of “Make the Connection” by Bob Greene, and it was this message that really resonated with her. “He had Oprah work out twice a day, and I thought, if she can do it, I can do it.” (In a fun twist of fate, Carney met Greene years later when he was promoting a new book at CNN. She shared her story with Greene, who shared it with producers at “Oprah.” In 2004, Carney was invited to appear on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to tell her story). Instead of setting a lofty goal that would just overwhelm her, Carney began small. “I wanted to hit one goal every day, so at first I just committed to going to the gym twice a day. That’s it. I would walk through the front doors, be in the space for a minute, and leave. But I’d met my goal.” And it wasn’t long before one goal led to another. “By the fourth day, I set a new goal of one minute on treadmill,” she says. “That was a minute more than I did the day before, which meant I’d hit a new goal. On day eight, I added two minutes, then four. Soon my body became acclimated to it, and it wasn’t as overwhelming as going from zero to 60.”
A New Game Plan “I wasn’t tracking my weight closely at that time, but I’m guessing I lost 30 to 40 pounds,” she says. “Once I’d lost 50 pounds, I went back to New York, thinking I would work even more. But when I walked into my agents’ office, all of their faces fell.” Carney was typically cast in the “chubby girl” parts, and now that she was 190 pounds, they said she wasn’t going to get roles anymore. But Carney was feeling better, and she knew intuitively that she was doing the right thing. “By the time I was down 90 pounds, I went to a new doctor who looked at my PCOS,” she says. “All of my tests – cholesterol, blood pressure, cycle – looked better. That attention to health wasn’t as hard as I would have ever thought it was.” So instead of continuing with her acting pursuits, Carney switched gears and took her career in another direction.
Paying it Forward “After I reached my goal, I thought maybe I could help someone else, so I bought the domain www.theweighwewere.com and shared my story there,” she says. “Then I started getting emails from women from all over the world who also had PCOS. So I built another site, www.soulcysters.com, to encourage more women to tell their stories.” The site started growing, and Carney knew she was on to something. During this time, she went back to LA where she would write for six TV shows in three years, including one show for Discovery Health. As she built a reputation as a health reporter, Carney caught the attention of producers at CNN. They offered her the position of medical anchor, and once again, she was back in Atlanta.
A Life In Balance After losing 90 pounds, Carney quickly learned that keeping the weight off would be just as challenging as taking it off. “It’s not fair to say I hit my goal weight and stayed there,” she says. “Once I got to CNN, I put 50 pounds on again because my life was out of balance. But this time I knew how to take it off.” Today a big challenge is maintaining healthy habits around her long workdays at GPB. “In TV, I don’t have a nine to five day, so the challenge is not letting my lifestyle throw me off balance,” she says. “I’ll travel with a jump rope and get in four minutes at the hotel, or I’ll do some push-ups and squats. And I’ve started wearing a pedometer. It’s little things like that.” She’s also learned to make healthier food choices. “I used to love an iced venti latte at Starbucks, but when I saw how many calories were in it,

AFTER
I switched to black coffee with half and half,” she says. “A lot of that is connected to how much physical activity I’m getting. When I exercise, I naturally want to eat healthier.” But ultimately, Carney says it all comes down to balance. “The biggest challenge was wrapping my head around the fact that it was a combination of diet, exercise, and stress management,” she says. “If one of those things is out of balance my PCOS comes back. I need all three to be healthy.”
The Weigh We Were “I’ve always been obsessed with weight loss success stories,” she says. “When I was losing my weight, I had files and files full of them, and every day I would read one. Just seeing the before and after pictures and knowing someone had done it helped me keep going.” Carney knew she could help other people with their weight loss journeys, and she wanted to do it in the way she knew best: storytelling. The result is a series on GPB called “The Weigh We Were.” In each of six 30-minute episodes, viewers see 12 to 15 guests reveal, step by step, how they lost up to 200 pounds. “There are 34 people on the show counting me,” Carney says. “They’re just average people, so viewers can see themselves reflected. It’s about getting into that mental space where you believe you can do it.” The show’s website, www.theweighwewere.com, also features detailed information of each person’s weight loss story, including lifestyle changes, meal plans, exercise regimes and even recipes. “There is a mental switch that happens before the physical switch,” Carney says. “You have to look at what you’re saying to yourself about your ability to lose weight. I realized it takes the exact same amount of energy to say ‘I like this’ as it does to say ‘I hate this.’ So I would tell myself that working out is great, or veggies are yummy, and over time I started to believe it.”
The Best Version of Herself Today Carney has found balance in her life, and she couldn’t be happier with where her experiences have taken her. “Having lost the weight, I feel like I’ve dialed the clock back several years,” she says. “My skin looks better now at 43 than it did at 23. I just feel like I’m now coming in to my prime. After losing 90 pounds, I feel like I did it. There is a sense of accomplishment, like I can do anything.”

ransformations Sometimes it takes something as big as a health scare or as small as seeing a photo of yourself to give you a catalyst for change. Motivation is something that comes from inside and if you follow it, it can lead to health and happiness. These inspiring individuals stayed the course, faced their challenges and came out stronger. If they can do it, so can you!
Lisa Koehler: Dealing with Loss
I remember seeing a picture my mom had taken of my brother and me on Christmas Eve. When I saw the photo I couldn’t even recognize myself. At 50 pounds overweight, I was miserable and sick. I was also in an unhealthy marriage and depressed, so I decided enough was enough. I had dieted and worked out in the past and nothing changed. It wasn’t until I put the two together that the weight started to fall off. I started at home with the workout program Power 90 and then worked my way through Turbo Jam, P90X and Insanity. The feeling of accomplishment was amazing. After my divorce, I knew this was my chance to create the life I dreamed of and deserved. Unexpectedly, my ex-husband filed for bankruptcy, so all the bills that were “ours” became “mine.” Living in a house with a mortgage based on an income for two, I was left with no choice but to file for bankruptcy myself.
Photo courtesy of Paul Biagui Photography
I started a home-based business as a rep for P90X. I hoped to make $100 a month; however, little did I know that it would lead me to a six figure income. Today I am confident and paying it forward by helping others realize there is hope for everyone.
“I learned that if I ate right and exercised, then the weight came off and stayed off. You have to do both, not one or the other.”

Bill Murphy: Beating the Odds
Over 17 years ago I was faced with one of the biggest challenges of my life: thyroid disease. I went to my doctor with what I thought was the flu and ended up being informed that I had Graves disease, an enlarged heart, and was in the throes of full congestive heart failure. I was rushed to the hospital and admitted to the cardiac ICU unit. I was told that I may not make it. Fortunately, six weeks later I was on my way to recovery. I stayed positive and faced my illness head on. In May 2009, after regaining my health and making positive lifestyle changes, including changing my eating habits and adopting a daily workout regimen, I competed in a bodybuilding show for the first time in celebration of turning 40. I trained for nine months, and also worked with Mark MacDonald, the author of “Body Confidence.”
“I believe reliable, dependable, consistent habits breed success in the gym, at work and in life.”
He was a great nutritional coach and a positive motivator. All the hard work paid off and I won first place in my division. As I begin each day I thank God for the second chance I was given. Today, I continue to keep health at the top of my list and rarely miss a workout. These workouts have helped me achieve my goals and have given me an appreciation for each and every day.

Inspiring Others
By 2007, my life had become a blur of depression and obesity. I weighed 227 pounds at 5’ 1” tall and was told by my doctor that my blood pressure was elevated. I decided then and there to lose the weight. I was sick and tired of being unhealthy, so I embarked on a life-changing journey that has opened so many doors for me today.
Get Glowing Skin!
I began by reading Bob Greene’s book, “The Best Life Diet.” It gave me the knowledge and jumpstart I needed to change my diet and incorporate exercise slowly. I also checked out books from the library on weight training and healthy nutrition.
At my heaviest weight, my self-esteem was at an all-time low. It was difficult to go out in public and work out with every part of my body hurting and aching as I attempted to exercise. But I did it anyway and I lost 115 pounds with healthy eating and vigorous exercise. I became a personal trainer in 2009 and started my own company, The Bella Fitness Group, to help others get healthy and change their own lives as I did.
“I began educating myself on how to eat well and the way God intended for us to eat. I learned what to eat, how to eat and when to eat. I changed everything.”

Breaking Childhood Habits My family owned a popular southern restaurant, so fried foods and the traditional southern favorites were a staple in my diet growing up. Unfortunately, I picked up the bad habit of yo-yo dieting to try and counter the effects of all the high fat foods I was eating.
I exercise everyday and try to have a diet based on moderation. My biggest addition, which has been a tipping point, has been eating Highland Bakery’s nutrition bars and incorporating Chuice, which is a raw food drink in a bottle. Today, I have tons of energy and stamina, which I need to run a successful business.

JANUARY 2013
I had been fit at various times in my life, but something always seemed to happen to throw me off course. At 62, I was more than 60 pounds overweight. On impulse, during a charity event, I bid on a fitness assessment donated by Catalyst Fitness, and this decision has changed my life.
My proudest moments have been the encouraging and flattering comments I’ve received from other Catalyst Fitness clients who’ve observed my fitness journey. They’ve been so gracious in acknowledging my hard work and progress. I love feeling years younger than my age.

Feeling Years Younger
I arrived for the fitness assessment with much trepidation. I was initially struck by the fact that it didn’t look like a traditional gym. It was pretty intimidating. However, it was clear from the first time we met that my trainer Bill cared for my health and well-being. I have worked out with Bill three times a week for the past 16 months and achieved tremendous results.

Go Ahead... Just Lose It!
Taking an Active Role
I’m currently 38 years old, but it was around the age of 25 that I started gaining weight and not taking care of my body. I overate, smoked and never thought of the after-effects of my actions. At the age of 30, I was put on blood pressure and cholesterol medication, but I just continued my regular routine. At 32, I got a wakeup call when I was told I might have a blockage in my right aorta. I got a cardiac catheterization, and thank God it showed I had a good heart without any blockages.

Then in 2011, my twin brother had a heart attack that required him to get a stint. This was a big wake-up call for me. I had to do something to change my life or I would end up like him. I decided to meet with Dr. Lynn Flowers and his nurse, Misty Croft. They took the time to ask me about my family history and helped me develop a comprehensive health plan.

Becoming a Healthier Mom
I began a life transformation in 2010 after the birth of my son. As I fell in love with him, I came to realize that I could no longer live an unhealthy, unfulfilled life and be the caliber of mother I desired to be. I was 265 pounds at that time. Today I am 110 pounds lighter, and am no longer plagued by the myriad of health problems correlated to that weight. I am thankful to Northside Hospital and for the gastric bypass procedure that changed my life forever. I am healthy, and loving the energy and enthusiasm I feel every day.

Getting Back on Track
DON’T LET JUST ANYONE PERFORM YOUR LASER NAIL TREATMENT Trust A Laser-Certified Physician To Diagnose And Treat Your Toenail Fungus If you have toenail fungus, do you visit a spa or clinic under the care of a non-medical technician? Or, do you choose a professional practice, where your entire experience, from diagnosis to treatment, is handled by one of Atlanta’s most skilled podiatrists? At Village Podiatry, our board-certified doctors painlessly perform an FDA-cleared laser procedure, killing fungus under the nail without harming the surrounding skin. So don’t take chances. Trust the medical professionals at Village Podiatry, the Southeast’s largest, most respected practice specializing in foot and ankle care.
After a physical assessment, Melinda was astonished to discover her higher-than-normal levels of body fat for her 5’ 2” figure, despite her frequent weekly workouts. Determined to get back on a healthier track, she decided to make a lifestyle change. She began BLAST900 classes in June 2010 and a BLASTNutrition program in November 2011. She met her goal in June 2012 when she lost a total of 29 pounds. She now works out smarter not harder – and incorporates running, Pure Barre and yoga into her routine.

Are you Experiencing... • • • • • All through my 20s and early 30s, I was a runner. However, running met my needs when I was younger, but I had to change my ways as I got older. At 34 years old, I set out on a mission. My mission was to gain muscle and to change my body composition. I researched and found a trainer at House of Payne Personal Training who began training me and helped me gain insight on how to make better nutrition choices for my needs. I turned 38 this year. I am continually overwhelmed at what the human body can do through good nutrition and weight training.

Jack Fussell On Jan. 12, Jack Fussell, 62, will begin his run across America to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. Twice in his life he was told he did not have long to live, but Fussell beat the odds and has trained for the last 10 years for this celebratory run. At the age of three, Fussell survived being hit by a car. Then about 12 years ago, he was diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer and told he only had one year to live if he continued his unhealthy habits. After losing a tremendous amount of blood from his ulcer and overcoming a grade 2 heart murmur, Fussell decided to make a lifestyle change. For the last decade, he has trained at Amicalola Falls State Park and lost more than 100 pounds.

Brian Bobb Brian was in a car accident in the fall of 2010 that left him with a shattered face, crushed skull and multiple broken bones. “I knew that something horrible had happened because I made the conscious decision in my head, sometime between the accident and waking up, to continue living.” The situation necessitated reconstructing the bones in Brian’s face and reattaching them to his skull. Dr. Mike Majmundar, a board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, knew this would be a challenging case. After a healing period, and some additional work, Brian was back. He was even asked to model in a designer’s runway show, and worked with Project Runway’s trainer. He credits Dr. Majmundar’s expertise for the “incredible” feeling of looking into a mirror and seeing himself again.

Today he is healthier than ever and says he has a strong desire to live every second of every day and be an example to his children and grandchildren. Fussell plans to begin his run in Savannah, GA, and cross the finish line in Monterey, CA. He is taking this long journey as a celebration of his healthy lifestyle changes and as a tribute to his father, whom he lost to Alzheimer’s disease in 2000.

Scott Whitney On 2012’s Super Bowl Sunday, I embarked upon a two-mile bike ride. During the ride, my bike hit a curb; I suffered a brain hemorrhage and clavicle break. Fortunately, some good samaritans took me to the ER. Within an hour and a half, I was on the operating table and had a piece of my skull removed to prevent further swelling. After the surgery, I fought pneumonia and the doctors decided that the best course of action was to place me in an induced coma for a few days to allow my body a chance to heal. At that time, they were concerned that there would be permanent brain damage. I finally remember waking up the third week in the hospital with my family, girlfriend and close friends around me. Within a few days, they started me on occupational therapy, and speech and physical therapy. During the next few weeks I made tremendous progress. After multiple surgeries and countless hours of therapy, this Humpty Dumpty was finally put together again by the end of March.

Changing Careers Nancy Shim As a music major, Nancy began her first career as a traveling musician playing piano and flute with different bands across the country. But she tired of the grueling touring schedule and wanted to pursue a different career that would allow her to use her hands creatively and stay close to home. She turned to esthetics and received her training at The Elaine Sterling Institute in Sandy Springs. Today she works as a medical esthetician at Blue Med Spa, living proof of her philosophy to “put your best face forward.”
Amy Stankus After almost 20 years of working with design professionals, I left that field to make beautiful chocolate bon bons - my passion. I had a need to “make things” rather than sit at a keyboard all day. Opening my first retail business, Chocolate South, has been challenging but rewarding. My advice to anyone starting a new business later in life is to discover what you love and make the commitment. Wonderful things happen once you commit.

In March, 2001, at 400 pounds and 40 years old, I had a gastric bypass. I thought that was my success story. Then in October 2009, I was laid off. It turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me. At 49 years old, I went back to college to become a registered nurse. Though my journey is not complete yet, I graduate May of 2013. I hope to work on the bariatric medical surgical floor when I graduate. I am proof you are never too old to pursue your dreams.

What Do I Want To Change? Assessing My Priorities
First it’s time to get your priorities organized. Ask yourself what areas of your life you would like to improve. Start out by circling these different areas of your life and ranking them from the highest priority level (5) to the lowest priority level (1). We’ve also left some blank lines for you to fill in other areas that may be more personal to where you are right now. My Overall Health

Assessing Your Probability for Success It’s time to ask yourself some important questions. You now have a clear idea of what areas you would like to improve, so take a look at those areas and see which ones you want to work on first. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
1 Do I have the willpower, passion and fortitude to see this through?
Being clear about why you want to achieve your resolutions will help you stay focused. If you haven’t discovered why you want these changes in your life, then chances are you probably don’t want them badly enough to sustain your efforts through the year. Assess and focus: ask yourself if your resolution is something you are truly passionate about. If you have the desire to make the changes, then the goal is more realistic and more achievable. Don’t dwell on negative thoughts, and instead focus on the positive outcome of making your resolutions a reality. Need help? Then ask a friend or loved one for encouragement or advice when you’re feeling stuck.
2 Have I set a realistic timeframe to achieve my
goal(s)?
Whether you want to lose weight or reconnect with loved ones, trying to do too much at once will not only be overwhelming, it can also be discouraging. Write it down: keeping a journal or diary of what you’re doing on a daily basis to achieve your resolutions is an easy way to see if you are staying on track.
3 Am I doing too much too soon?
Depending on what your resolutions are, you may be able to combine them. For example if your goal is to be more fit and make new friends, try joining a recreational sports group. Make time every day: whether taking large steps or small steps, every move in the direction you want to go is one step closer to achieving your goal. Don’t be bogged down with making big changes all at once, sometimes small changes can add up to a big difference.
What the Statistics Say According to statistics data from the University of Scranton’s Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45% of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions, however, only a few are successful in achieving their resolution.
• 75% of people maintain their resolutions through the first week • 64% have kept their resolutions after a month

Overcoming the Obstacles Part of any good plan is also understanding your potential roadblocks, or things that will prevent you from achieving your goals. Recognizing these roadblocks will help you learn how to deal with them before they come up. Take this short quiz to find out what your Resolution Roadblock is and how you can break past it. Circle the letters that apply to you.

D
I’ll start tomorrow!
The thought of finally achieving my goals makes me feel: A
Relief. It will free me up to do other important things

Mostly A s - Your Resolution Roadblock is TIME We always wish we had more, but giving yourself a realistic timetable to complete your goal is often a good motivator and will help keep you on track. No matter how much time you devote to accomplishing your goals – make sure it is a daily commitment – even if it’s just 15 minutes a day. Carving out even a few minutes to work on your resolutions will not only make you feel better about starting them, but also less guilty about taking time away from other things. Take it slow, and you’ll get there before you know it. Steps to avoid this roadblock _______________________________________________________________________________________
Mostly B s - Your Resolution Roadblock is FEELING OVERWHELMED Doing too many things at once can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed and anxious. The best thing to do is relax and don’t try to do too many things at once. This can be easier said than done, so recognizing this is the first step in the right direction. Try making a list of small, easy steps you can do every day to help you get closer to your goals. Don’t feel stressed or disappointed in yourself if it’s slow going at first. You can build momentum as you go instead of feeling discouraged when you blaze a trail too soon and then burn out. Steps to avoid this roadblock _______________________________________________________________________________________
Mostly C s - Your Resolution Roadblock is MONEY Depending on what your goals are, you may want to think about getting some advice from a financial advisor, especially if your plans involve something more costly like redoing the kitchen or traveling more. There are always different ways to tackle a resolution, and you shouldn’t let money issues stand in your way. If you can’t afford a gym membership, get some friends together and start a walking group in the park. Take a look at your finances on your own or with a professional and see where you can start cutting back and saving for what you really want. Steps to avoid this roadblock _______________________________________________________________________________________
Mostly D s - Your Resolution Roadblock is COMMITMENT Having a realistic sense of what you want can save you a lot of time and effort. If you’ve ever abandoned a goal or resolution because you simply lost interest, then you should ask yourself if you really wanted it in the first place. What would truly make you happy right now? Are you willing to make the commitment to see it through? If your current goals don’t leave you feeling excited inside, then it may be time to reassess whether this is something you want for yourself or if it’s something others expect of you. If you are feeling lackluster, then it’s time to find your passion again! Steps to avoid this roadblock _______________________________________________________________________________________

New Plan, New You
People are 10 times more likely to succeed with a goal like losing weight if they made a New Year’s resolution.
Change Your Plan, Change Your Life Albert Einstein once defined insanity as, “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Only you can change your life and changing your attitude or your method can lead to success. No one can make and keep these resolutions for you – you must have the passion to see it through to the end. As you change and evolve, so will your goals, so keep this interactive journal with you as you plan ahead.

Breaking Free from
Bondage The issues men and women face in active addiction and how to get help By Alison Broderick
lthough the spotlight of drug addiction is sometimes shined on celebrities, drug and alcohol abuse spans beyond Hollywood—families across America and around the globe are struggling with this cunning, baffling and incredibly powerful disease. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) the abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol is the cause of the death of more than 100,000 Americans every year. Scientific research seems to have settled the long-standing debate: addiction is a disease of the brain and not a matter of willpower (or lack thereof ). It doesn’t discriminate—men and women from all ages and walks of life can become chemically dependent.

“Addiction is the number one problem in our society today,” says Jim Seckman, MAC, CACII, CCS, clinical director of MARR, Inc. a drug and alcohol rehab center in Doraville. “So many societal problems are either the direct or indirect result of addiction: the high cost of medical care, overwhelmed legal systems, pornography, child and spousal abuse, inundated law enforcement, an increase in violent crimes, overcrowded jails and prisons and the breakdown of the family system.” Joel Bagley, CACI, executive director of Purple, Inc. in Lawrenceville, believes strongly in educating the community about addiction. “Because this disease is so commonplace, I believe that many people assume they will either know what to do when it affects them or dismiss it entirely as a moral issue,” he says. “The sooner our communities can be educated about the truths of this disease, the sooner we can begin to heal millions of lives.”
Understanding the Disease Model The NIDA defines addiction as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. Alcohol and drugs alter the brain’s reward system by flooding it with dopamine—a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in behavior, cognition, movement, motivation, emotions, mood and sleep patterns. Stored by certain nerve cells, dopamine is released upon stimulation. The brain guarantees lifesustaining activities are repeated by associating them with reward or pleasure. When the pleasure center is activated by drugs and/or alcohol, the brain recognizes that something significant is taking place and must be remembered. The brain then teaches the user to repeat the activity over and over again; however, the user begins to develop an increased tolerance in order to achieve the same euphoric effect.
(COD), such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, major depression and bipolar disorder. “While drugs and alcohol may have helped the person deal with the symptoms of his or her disorder early on, substance abuse eventually leads to its own problems and unmanageability,” Seckman says. “This compounds the already-intricate set of issues with which the person is struggling.” Because women have an innate desire for connection, their addiction is closely linked to their relationships. “Men seem to compartmentalize their addiction, whereas substance abuse in women radically impacts every part of her life, including her identity, roles and relationships,” Seckman says. According to the Addiction TecÚology Transfer Center (ATTC) Network, substance abuse in women is multifaceted and often results in violence, sexual abuse and a multitude of other complicated conditions. The disease is so fierce, in fact, that it has the ability to rob a woman of her maternal instinct. This is certainly not meant to downplay addiction in men, however. From 2004 to 2005, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reported in its National Survey on Drug Use and Health that men were nearly twice as likely to have a substance use disorder than their female counterparts. During active addiction, it is common for a man to endure more legal and job-related problems, and he is more prone to seek professional treatment since substance abuse in men is less stigmatized.
“Men seem to compartmentalize their addiction, whereas substance abuse in women radically impacts every part of her life, including her identity, roles and relationships.”
Unlike natural activities that release dopamine—including food, sex and exercise—drugs and alcohol can release two to 10 times more, which is why they are highly addictive. “Because neurotransmitter levels are immediately altered, normal functioning of the brain is thrown off. This sets up a pattern of dependency just to try to establish normal levels,” Seckman says. Over time, an addict’s brain produces unusually low levels of dopamine, and he or she has a difficult time experiencing pleasure naturally.
Active Addition: Mars vs. Venus It’s no surprise that men and women differ in many ways, but for years they were lumped in the same group when it came to addiction research. Women were believed to abuse substances in the same way men did, and it wasn’t until the early 1990s that experts began to notice some stark differences. “Over the years, society has placed a stigma around chemically dependent women. Despite the advancements that have been made in the addiction treatment field, many women have a tendency to isolate even more due to the embarrassment and shame associated with their addiction,” notes Jennifer Angier, CEO of Foundations Recovery Network in Roswell. Not only are addicted men and women genetically predisposed for chemical dependence, but they use drugs and/or alcohol as a means of coping with life’s challenges as well. In fact, some individuals suffer from co-occurring disorders www.bestselfconnect.com
2Substance Abuse.indd 38197.13.1.indd 53 2
Impact on Health
Undoubtedly, addiction takes a toll on a person’s health. “Perhaps it’s the risk-taking behavior that accompanies substance abuse that has the most devastating effects on the body,” Bagley says. “Driving under the influence, unprotected sex and the sharing of drug paraphernalia are just a few of the behaviors that put one’s health at great risk.” Of course, the physiological factors vary between men and women in active addiction. Women experience greater damage (i.e. medical, psychological and emotional) earlier in their drinking and/or drugging careers; the disease of addiction in women can progress quickly and suddenly; and the mortality rate for chemically dependent women is 50 to 100 times higher than their male counterparts.
Addiction Treatment and Recovery According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), addiction, like other chronic diseases, often includes cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, it is progressive and can cause disability or premature death. The good news is recovery from addiction is 100 percent possible. “The purpose of addiction treatment is to meet the addict where he or she is in life and provide the care that is needed,” Angier says. “We want clients to trust the process—to help them see that there is hope.” Some facilities, such as MARR, offer gender-specific treatment to address the underlying issues behind addiction. “Because it is clear that men and women drink and/or use for different reasons, we believe gender-separate treatment programs are essential for lasting recovery,” Seckman notes. Community-based organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) help individuals who struggle with addiction achieve and maintain sobriety. BEST SELF ATLANTA

Helpful Advice for Family and Friends What you should know
Janet Fluker, LPC, director of the Family Recovery Center at MARR, offers tips for friends and family members of addicts.
1. Focus on taking care of yourself. Now until March 30th we are giving one night free with a three night stay. 20% off Rental space for Workshops or Retreats through February 28th.
2. Get support from others. Lean on trustworthy people who can offer support, love and advice. 3. Set boundaries with the addict. Don’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable. 4. Stop enabling. Don’t do anything for the addict that he or she could do sober.
Per fe ret ct fo wo reats, r rks hop s a get nd aw ays .
5. Safety first. If you find yourself or your children in an unsafe situation, leave and call 911. 6. Let go of control. Remember the three Cs: “I didn’t cause it,” “I can’t control it,” and “I can’t cure it.” 7. Live your own life. Go on vacation, enjoy time with friends—be the person you want to be. 8. Ask for help! You cannot begin the recovery process alone, so start by asking for support.

Specializing in issues that have not responded to other methods
Oftentimes, awareness is the best defense against addiction. “Nearly everyone has known—or will know—someone who struggles with chemical dependence,” Angier adds. “By decreasing the stigma through education and seeking help from qualified professionals in the community, families can uncover the truth about this deadly disease. Today, they have a choice.”

Most rehab facilities incorporate family recovery into their programs. Additionally, community-based organizations like Al-Anon and Nar-Anon provide support for families affected by a loved one’s addiction. “By the time the family embarks on their own recovery, they have endured months or years of dysfunctional behavior that has become normalized. It takes conscious effort and time to replace these toxic behaviors with healthy responses,” Bagley notes.

Recovery from addiction is a family affair. “We often say that addiction is a family disease, as family members develop unhealthy patterns of behavior in order to cope with the chaos, anxiety and shame that are produced by the addict,” Seckman says. However, if the family receives treatment, the system will tend to stabilize.

with Dr. Venus Von Mock Ask the Hypnotherapy Specialist Can hypnotherapy help me lose weight? As a hypnotherapist, I seek out the sources of limitations residing in the subconscious mind. Matters regarding weight and eating almost always have an emotional component, which develop into mental programs of eating habits. Physicians know that there is a connection between Cortisol and belly fat. Chronic stress causes excess Cortisol and degeneration. Sources of stress can be mental, emotional, physical or spiritual. Even perceived stress can cause the body to “hold on” and be resistant to letting go of body fat, despite efforts of diet and exercise. Hypnotherapy unlocks your own potential and allows you to take control of your own life. Some clients claim that they lost weight even though that wasn’t what they came to see me about. Some clients discovered that they had past life connections to their eating habits. One woman discovered a past life in which she died of star vation in a time of famine. Of course, not all clients’ sources of food related problems stem from past lives. Ever yone processes events and experiences differently. However, through hypnotherapy you can release the energetic sources of these limitations and implement positive reinforcement for positive eating habits, which is key to accomplishing lasting results.

mylegs Your Questions Answered: Saphenous Veins By David Martin
Q: What is a saphenous vein ablation and why would someone need it?
New Year Special:
A: The saphenous vein is the largest superficial vein in the leg. Ablation means to close. A saphenous vein ablation is a procedure done to close off veins that are not doing their job, which is to carry blood back to the heart. When veins are not working property, blood pools in the leg where it can cause varicose veins and severe pain.

During the procedure, a small incision is created and a small catheter with a special electrode is passed into the saphenous vein. The electrodes produce radio frequency energy that closes the vein. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia in the doctor’s office and patients can resume normal activities the same day.

is encouraged to be used in that manner. If you have questions or concerns, be sure to ask your provider if they are using the catheter as a single-use device.
Q: If the veins are closed, where does the blood go?
A: When the saphenous veins are ablated, the blood flow is re-routed through healthier superficial vein systems and the deep veins continue to drain the majority of blood flow out of the legs. Q: What would happen if I needed cardiac bypass surgery later, as I understand sometimes the saphenous vein is used? A: An abnormal saphenous vein is not suitable for bypass usage anyway. There are other conduits in your body that are available for bypass surgery.

Experience the Power of Whole Body Vibration!
A New Year’s Resolution Worth Keeping
First Week Free for New Members
Balancing family and finances By Karen Lee
There’s nothing more transforming than an honest moment with yourself. So this year, resolve to be honest about one thing—your financial life. • The 10 Minute = 1 Hour Workout! • Helping America Get On & Get Active! • Perfect for All Ages! • The Next Generation in Whole Body Vibration!
Many people, but not all, fall into two categories: 1. Those who sacrifice health and family for the pursuit of money and status. 2. Those that have become so focused on a “life of meaning” that they have ignored the importance of money in their lives. I believe there is a baseline need for money in our lives, and that it’s also our adult responsibility to take care of the present and plan for the future.

The Effects of Hormones on Aging Why does losing weight become more difficult after the age of 40? As we age, men and women alike change, and the endocrine and immune systems are responsible for our body’s change in the aging process. The endocrine system regulates our body’s temperature, reproduction, growth, aging and immune system. Our hormones communicate between these systems, allowing our bodies to adapt to our environment. Hormone production decreases around age 40 and continues to diminish each year.
How do our hormones play a role in our ability to lose weight? Recent literature found that 90 percent of women experience weight gain between the ages of 35 and 55, or what has been defined as perimenopause and menopause. There are four essential elements to weight loss: nutrition, exercise, stress reduction and balanced hormones. Imbalanced hormones can directly impact appetite, fat storage and metabolism. Cessation of estrogen by the ovaries during menopause creates a need for the body to find another source. As a result, our body learns to convert more calories into fat to increase estrogen production. Progesterone, an opposing hormone of estrogen, causes water retention or bloating as hormone levels decline. Testosterone in women works to build and maintain muscle mass, which works to burn calories and cause a higher metabolism. Insulin resistance occurs when the body incorrectly converts every calorie to fat. Over time, your body resists the insulin produced in the body.
What are the benefits of hormone replacement therapy? Hormone replacement does not reverse the aging process, but it can slow down the process to achieve less deterioration, less illness and a better quality of life. Hormone replacement helps us maintain our good health and prevent many age related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Within six to 12 months of therapy, patients with balanced hormones notice reshaped bodies, fat disappearing, increased muscle tone, increased energy and more youthful looking skin.
What is a bio-identical hormone, and how is it different from a synthetic hormone? A bio-identical hormone has a chemical structure that is identical to the hormone naturally produced by the body. We refer to them as natural because they are natural to the human body. Natural hormones cannot be patented by drug companies. Synthetic hormones have a structure similar to but not exactly the same as hormones produced by the body. These chemical differences mean that synthetic hormones act differently and produce substantially different effects. Natural (bioidentical) and synthetic hormones should not be considered the same or used interchangeably. A multitude of studies have demonstrated many harmful effects of synthetic hormones, whereas the medical literature supports no harmful effect of natural hormones, only beneficial effects.
What should people look for in a doctor who administers hormone replacement therapy? A large percentage of patients who are taking “natural hormones” from other doctors are on an inadequate regimen. Most health care providers are not trained to target optimal levels based on blood levels. Optimization of the hormones is achieved by replenishing these hormones to physiologic levels, which has been shown to alleviate these age–related changes.

Facial Rejuvenation … What You Need to Know Now! Confidence in one’s facial appearance is critical to developing and maintaining a positive self-image. However, both men and women as young as their early 40s begin to notice (and in some cases fixate) on changes to their facial appearance. Fortunately there are many new minimally invasive and non-invasive techniques to correct and maintain facial appearance. When treating a face, there are three components related to facial aging that must be addressed: The Skin’s Surface The skin itself reveals the effects of sun damage, life habits such as smoking, and disease processes such as rosacea and acne. A number of pigmentary changes such as melasma (brown discoloration), excess blood vessel growth, and lines and wrinkles due to a loss of skin elasticity and dermal thickness need to be addressed with a combination of athome skin care and interventions such as intense pulsed light therapy, V beam laser treatments, chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing. Gravity-Related Sagging The second is gravity-related sagging of the skin and underlying fat and muscles of the face. Non-invasive techniques such as Ultherapy, which uses focused, high intensity external ultrasound energy to tighten the skin and deeper tissues of the face while stimulating collagen production, offers a non-invasive, no downtime technique. For more advanced aging, tissue repositioning and removal is sometimes required. Examples of this are blepharoplasty for excess eyelid tissue, which can often lead to both aesthetic and functional visual field improvement, brow lifting procedures, and lower face and neck lifting known as a facelift, or rhytidectomy. The downtime related to these procedures is about 7 to 10 days, but the benefits can last decades. Seth A. Yellin, MD,FACS Facial Plastic Surgeon

Facial Volume Three-dimensional loss of facial volume contributes just as significantly to facial aging as skin sagging, and is often the first manifestation that patients recognize. But instead of filling a line or wrinkle, patients can re-volumize the face to recreate a more youthful facial shape. As we age, both men and women lose midface volume and add lower facial volume, which is why some feel that men age more gracefully than women since the aging face accentuates desirable male characteristics. With the advances in injectable fillers, facial plastic surgeons now have a palette of products that can best serve the patient’s needs.

Pay for college without going broke!

Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.
