Staff Pick: Sara Young Vita-Prana Yoga Studio

Photo courtesy of Vita-Prana Yoga Studio

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to try a yoga class, so I showed up bright and early at Vita-Prana Yoga Studio in Smyrna. Since I’ve never taken yoga before, I was a little nervous and didn’t know what to expect. I can barely touch my toes let alone do any of the other poses. My fears were quickly put aside as I was greeted at the door by the owner, Vita. She recommended I start with a Hatha yoga class, which would be best as a beginner. The teacher, Cheryl, made me comfortable with her friendly demeanor. The class was both challenging and relaxing, and the studio was very quiet and peaceful. By the end of the class I was nice and limber and felt great. Now I’m hooked! They also offer aerial yoga, but I’ll try that one when I can finally touch my toes.

When there are obstacles standing in the way of reaching a goal, you can either rise to the occasion or sit on the sidelines. If you have someone by your side to help bolster your efforts, sometimes those obstacles don’t seem so insurmountable. I recently moved into a new house where everything seemed to be going wrong – the power went out, the plumbing stopped working, the basement flooded – and I was very close to giving up and moving back to my comfortable apartment. My husband’s positive attitude helped me see that these issues, which seemed difficult at the time, were really not as bad as I thought. Keeping that positive attitude is something that Amani and Marcus Pollard (p. 29) did as they went around the world together on the reality program, CBS’s“The Amazing Race.” They proved that leaning on each other’s strengths is not only a good recipe for a wonderful marriage, but it also helped get them through each obstacle they had to face throughout the show. Finding that person to support and love can be a challenge in itself, and in this issue we hear from a few experts about how to find and develop that love (p. 35). Finally, you’ll learn more about keeping one of your hardest working muscles healthy (p.47). A healthy heart will make it that much easier to take on any challenge life throws your way. Happy reading!

What you wear to the gym can be just as important as the exercise you do. A poorly fitting sports bra offers little to no support and can lead to sagging and stress on ligaments. The experts at Intimacy suggest that a good sports bra should have additional seaming and side panels for low to high intensity workouts, underwire for added support and adjustable bra straps.

Healthy and tasty ideas to nourish your body

Chicken Sauté with Triple Berry Glaze This sweet, yet slightly tangy dish is a fun and unique way to prepare chicken. With easy to find ingredients and a short prep and cook time, you can get this meal on your table in about 20 minutes. For those days when you don’t have a lot of time to whip up something to eat, this dish is ideal. Ingredients: 1 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup all purpose flour 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast tenders 3 to 4 tablespoons canola oil 1 (12 oz.) jar Smucker’s® Orchard’s Finest™ Northwest Triple Berry Preserves 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish Rice pilaf, prepared (optional) 2 teaspoons fresh chopped Italian parsley, if desired

Method: Combine salt, pepper and flour in a shallow bowl. Coat chicken with seasoned flour. Shake off excess flour. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté chicken in batches, using additional oil as needed, about 4-6 minutes per side or until golden brown and an instant read thermometer reads 170° F. Transfer chicken to platter, loosely covered with foil. Combine preserves and horseradish in skillet, cooking over low heat until sauce begins to bubble. Return chicken to skillet, stirring to coat chicken evenly. Serve over rice pilaf and garnish with parsley, if desired. Serves: 4

An International Flavor

Cup of Comfort

Using local farmers and all-natural ingredients is at the heart of the menu of the newest culinary addition to Phipps Plaza, Latitude. Atlanta chef Micah Willix, formerly of Ecco, has created dishes that are “globally inspired,” so there is something for everyone to enjoy. The lunch menu promises a delicious variety of sandwiches, soups and salads like the lamb burger, roasted beet salad or crab bisque – all moderately priced. The slightly smaller dinner menu has choice cuts of fish, duck, pork and steak, all uniquely prepared.

Loose tea tends to offer up a more flavorful punch because of the naturally whole ingredients that are packaged in tins instead of cut up in individual bags. When you taste a tea like Estate Grey by SoRen Tea, the sweet French vanilla and pungent bergamot is a welcomed comfort, especially on a chilly winter day. It’s no doubt that Atlanta-based tea enthusiasts and sisters Sonnia Shields and Rena Williams were thinking this same thought when they created their line of uniquely blended loose teas using whole tea leaves, rough-cut herbs and flowers. Estate Grey, $18.95. Details: Available at Market Eleven at the Loews Hotel Midtown, www.sorentea.com

Explore new ways to get more out of life

Cooking Up Some Fun By Jeyme Colodne Bringing people together for a special occasion can often be a challenge. Finding the right music, place, food and drinks can make or break an enjoyable evening. So this past year, Best Self Atlanta decided to do something a little different. We livened things up by heading over to Hal’s Kitchen in Sandy Springs for a delicious and interactive holiday meal. Once I read our menu, I knew we were all in for a treat. We all sat around a large island in the middle of the kitchen and listened as our chef explained what was in store for us. The menu included mini calzones, Argentine empanadas, Thai spring rolls, chorizo sliders, and for dessert, mini s’mores whoopee pies. Although some of the menu items were pre-prepared, everyone had a chance to create a Thai spring roll by filling it with cellophane noodles, bean sprouts and ground pork. Our chef made his roll in a matter of seconds, expertly dipping the thin rice paper wrapper in hot water to soften it, adding in all the ingredients and then rolling it up. I should have known it would not be that easy! It took me a bit longer to keep the rice paper from curling at the edges and make sure the ingredients weren’t falling off the sides. The mini s’mores whoopee pies turned out to be a bit easier, requiring only that we stack the ingredients together to make a sweet cookie sandwich. With each culinary creation, we laughed and cheered each other on. It was fun to see everyone out of their element, trying their hand at cooking and then enjoying the fruits of their labor. Hal’s Kitchen provided not only a great place to get people together for a fun evening, but also some new recipes to try out on our own for the next get-together. Associate Publisher, Patti Stephens tries her hand at making a spring roll.

When Scottish author George MacDonald first wrote “The Princess and the Goblin” in 1872, it is safe to say he never would have imagined it being reinterpreted for the stage. From February 10 - 19, people of all ages can enjoy the story of Princess Irene and the challenges she faces when she discovers a pathway into a magical world as only choreographer Twyla Tharp can tell it. Experience Tharp’s original full-evening ballet, co-produced by the Atlanta Ballet and Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Atlanta doctors provide answers to your questions

a

Q

I’ve heard about hip replacement surgery called Anterior Approach. Can you tell me more about it and why it’s different?

The Anterior Approach is a less invasive alternative to traditional hip replacement. It may offer reduced pain, faster recovery and fewer restrictions after surgery because the procedure is done with much less disruption to surrounding muscle and tissue. Ask your doctor if it’s right for you, and if it is, you should find a surgeon who has been specially trained in the procedure. Thomas Bradbury, MD Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center

Q

As a senior, I expect my body to change as I age. But what is not normal with aging?

It is extremely important to recognize that each person is an individual, and overall health—at any age—is greatly affected by lifestyle and the presence or absence of medical conditions and diseases. If you are experiencing confusion, significant memory problems, incontinence, fatigue or new headaches, make an appointment with your doctor. Those problems are not normal with aging. Also, decreased appetite, falls, shortness of breath or sudden change in functional status, such as not being able to walk as far as usual, may signal a significant health problem.

I have seen advertisements for a “heart scan” to see if I have heart artery blockages. Should I have one of these tests done?

The usual test touted as a “heart scan” is a coronary calcium score, which is a type of CAT scan. Calcium in the heart arteries roughly correlates to the amount of cholesterol plaque present in your arteries. This test is most useful in people who are at intermediate risk of heart disease based on their age, cholesterol level, presence of diabetes and smoking. Answer the six questions on the following website: http:// hp2010.nhlbihin.net. If your 10-year risk of having a heart attack is between 10 and 20 percent, getting a coronary calcium scan is probably worthwhile. Allen L. Dollar, MD, FACC, FACP

Grady Memorial Hospital

I just turned 50. What type of preventive testing is needed at my age?

At age 50, men and women should begin colon cancer screening, and a colonoscopy is the most thorough screening modality. Women should be screened for breast cancer through mammography biennially, and cervical cancer through a Pap smear every one to three years if sexually active. Men should consider prostate cancer screening by PSA testing. Because heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women, healthy 50-year-olds should have their blood pressure checked annually and a cholesterol profile run at least every five years. If you are overweight (body mass index > 25), a diabetes screening should be performed. HIV screening should also be considered by all sexually active adults. Other screenings are based on personal risk, so I recommend that all 50-year-olds speak with a primary care physician to determine what else might benefit them.

My biggest struggle in losing weight is controlling my food cravings. What can I do to increase my willpower to help me lose weight?

Food cravings are often driven by one of three things: a true nutritional need, an addictive trigger from an allergen or toxin or anxiety from an unresolved emotional issue. These all play a vital role in creating what we call “willpower.” Addressing all aspects in a holistic model is a key component to a weight loss lifestyle change plan. Eat a fresh, whole foods diet limiting toxins and chemicals, get tested for food sensitivities or allergies and find a method for reducing the anxiety driving the emotional food choices such as talk therapy, meditation or neurofeedback.

The amazing power of

“The Amazing Race” finalists Amani & Marcus Pollard celebrate the triumph of teamwork

T

eamwork is at the heart of any great relationship, and

never is teamwork more important than when a couple is going through stressful times. Having that person to lean on and offer support can not only help get you through the tough times, but also celebrate the joyful ones. Amani and Marcus Pollard of Pine Mountain, Georgia, this past season’s contestants on CBS’s “The Amazing Race,” had their fair share of joy and stress as they competed against other teams for a cash prize of one million dollars.

But these two are no strangers to hard work and multi-tasking. Besides being the parents of four children, Amani is also the owner of Maize N Grace boutique in LaGrange, while Marcus played professional football in the NFL for 14 years (including the Atlanta Falcons) and is currently a high school football coach. With so much going on, they did not intend to enter the show together, however, fate had a different plan. “Initially Marcus was applying with an old teammate. That fell through and that’s when the idea of us running the race together came in to play,” Amani explains. “Our first child was a honeymoon baby, so we entered into our marriage running (after kids anyway). We thought this would be an excellent opportunity to travel the world, really have some one-on-one time and because we are both very competitive, we thought we had a really good chance at winning the race.” The couple felt that a combination of being competitive, strong, having great communication and a “don’t quit” motto would be their biggest assets going into the race – and they were right. When they weren’t www.bestselfconnect.com

2:17:34 PM Amazing 38197.12.2.indd Race.indd 31 2

challenging themselves, they were cheering each other on and encouraging each other to never give up, no matter how difficult the task they faced. Besides winning, they had other goals they wanted to accomplish by competing. “(I wanted) to see how good of a team we could be together in a competitive and stressful competition,” Marcus says. Amani added, “We’ve got four babies. I want them to not only know what a ‘don’t quit’ spirit is, but to see it in action. Although Marcus and I work as a team everyday raising our children and maintaining a healthy and happy marriage, I wanted to shock his socks off too!” This reality show really puts the meaning of teamwork to the test, and sometimes contestants can crack under the pressure. After racing through four continents and 20 cities, the race drew to a close, and there were only three couples, including the Pollards, left to head back to the final city where new challenges awaited them. The final destination on the show was Atlanta, and throughout the episode, several couples

said that the Pollards would have a hometown advantage. “Knowing the race, there are no real advantages to being from or knowing a city,” Marcus says. Although they were excited to be heading back to Georgia, it offered no such advantage for them, as all three couples struggled with the different challenges they faced in the final home stretch. In the end, the Pollards came in third place, having lost time during the flight simulator challenge. As they crossed the finish line at The Swan House, they both had smiles on their faces and a positive attitude. “The race is not always given to the swift, but to the ones who endure and we endured!” Marcus says. “Every day is a race, you are going to get tired, you are going to have hurdles, you are going to stumble, you may even fall, but keep racing. You may get discouraged, you may fall behind, but keep racing. People may laugh at you, people may talk about you, but keep racing and when you cross the line you may not finish in first, but you finished the race. This is who we are.”

More from Amani and Marcus Pollard: Where did you two meet and how long have you been married? We met in Atlanta and we’ve been married 10 years. It will be 11 years this May. What do you believe is the best “recipe” for a successful marriage? First is faith in God, second is respect and third...whatever you did to get him or her is the same thing you need to do to keep them, and of course, love. How do you plan on spending this Valentine’s Day? It sounds terrible but Valentine’s Day isn’t a special day in itself for us. We make Valentine’s Day throughout the year on random days, just because. So this Valentine’s Day we may be playing Scrabble, hunting or at a Broadway play, but don’t put it past us to pull into a parking lot, turn up the music in the car and dance (We’ve done it before)! What new things did you learn about each other after being on the show? Marcus: I learned Amani is resilient, dedicated and strong - not just physically, but mentally, and has patience that surpasses all understanding. Amani: I learned that what I thought was real, is. It’s easy to think everything is great when things are, but take away the comforts of home, throw us in a strange and new environment, take away food and sleep and water. Marcus and I never changed, and I love him more because of it. What challenges did you face both on the show and within your relationship, and how did you overcome them? Leaving our kids was the most challenging. Not to take anything away from the race because we all know it had its challenging moments (i.e. the flight simulator), but as a whole, our communication allows us to overcome most challenges. With leaving the kids, communication amongst each other doesn’t solve that. So we had to make the race about the kids, instilling life lessons, and although we were thousands of miles away, making use of those teachable moments helped us conquer that challenge. How many countries did you see, and what was your favorite country that you visited and experience that you had? Amani: Wow, it was such a blur - we are racing you know! We’ve talked about this before and we still haven’t come to a concrete answer. Each place had something unique about its culture and people that we loved. It has just heightened our desire to see the world. www.bestselfconnect.com

Marcus: As for our favorite experiences, the lug-out* (in Malawi) was incredible. Just to be a part of that culture for that brief time was an experience of a lifetime, followed of course by my race car experience (in Brussels, Belgium). Now that’s how you drive! *(The lug-out required teams to unload cargo and passengers from a ferryboat, just like the locals do). Amani: Dancing at the castle (in Copenhagen, Denmark) was an amazing experience for me. After 14 years of dance, I’m sure my parents were happy to see a return on their investment after all these years. I also really enjoyed my experience at the theatre - that was my acting debut!

What was your reaction when you found out you had been chosen to be on “The Amazing Race”? Excited is an understatement. There are thousands of applicants each season, it was a huge honor to have made the cut! What is the accomplishment you are both most proud of? That we’ve impacted some lives. Since the race, we’ve been greeted daily with hugs, tear-filled eyes and letters simply saying thank you and that we’ve made a difference. We’ve helped a marriage and we’ve encouraged the “don’t quit” spirit. Of course the million in the bank would have been huge, but the response we’ve received has been priceless. We never expected to receive such a warm outpouring of expression and support. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? Marcus: Start out how you can hold out, my granddaddy would say. Amani: My grandma Effie told me, live with no regrets. What inspires you every day? Marcus: Amani, our kids and my faith. Amani: Life is precious and its days are numbered. So many people look back on life saying, “I could have, I should have, I would have.” I want to look back on life and say “I did.” I enjoy the moment, and am inspired by

Marcus, our kids Myles, Micah, Aja and Ayris and my faith. Each day is a gift. Who have been your biggest influences? Marcus: My mom, because as a young single parent I saw her work and never give up. She worked two and three jobs to provide for me and my sister, and then she went to college as a non-traditional student and graduated with honors and went back for her masters! She is a story of inspiration alone. Amani: My parents. Even though my parents divorced when I was very young, having a mother as a single parent who sacrificed and worked hard to support and instill values and self worth in me was invaluable. But equally important was having a father who although did not live in my home, was a permanent fixture in my life. He showed me what it was to be loved by a man and how to be treated by one. Where do you see yourselves five years from now? Being the winners of the All Star Season. If given the opportunity, we would love the chance to race again. BEST SELF ATLANTA

No matter how different human beings are, there’s one universal need that ties us all together: love. Some are looking for love, some are growing and maintaining existing love, while others are healing from love lost and learning to love themselves. We’ve spoken to inspiring Atlantans about their love journeys and top relationship experts for their advice on (pun intended) successful love-making.

The singles scene We’re here to tell you that being single does not mean something is wrong with you. Our society constantly gives us messages implying this, and it’s just not true. If you’re not happy being single or want to get out of a rut of dating the wrong people, there are some basic steps to help you meet great potential partners.

First step: self-love

“Individuals who don’t respect and love themselves have a habit of making poor romantic choices. You have to figure out why you’ve settled for less in the past before you can change your dating habits and patterns. This is where a relationship coach can help,” says Gabrielle Brooke, certified professional life and relationship coach. BEST SELF ATLANTA

Get out of the house

You’re not going to meet anyone sitting on your couch, so go out by yourself or grab a wing-friend to do an activity that you like. The good news is Atlanta has a lot to offer singles. John Patrick, 32, a successful dater and human resources professional (and drummer) who enjoys Atlanta’s arts and music scene says, “Atlanta is a great place to meet a variety of interesting people because there are tons of different neighborhoods with unique things to do and a large single population, versus a smaller city where everyone’s married and there’s nothing to do.” Not really the social type? “People tend to do well when they do things more than once. The key is to learn how to desensitize yourself to the fears of going outside your comfort zone. It takes practice!” says Mark D. Ackerman, PhD, licensed psychologist, clinical and forensic psychology. He suggests going out with a friend or group at first to build confidence. You’ll find out you survived the experience and be more apt to do it again.

Bar none

Embrace a more natural environment to meet a potential dating partner, such as where you have an interest in an activity, instead of a bar. “I see single folks struggling and looking for love in all the wrong places,” Dr. Ackerman says. “Let’s step back a minute to see who we are going to find at a bar: someone who might not be themselves, under the influence of alcohol, in a place where they might put on airs and not be honest with you.” Whatever gets you giddy, whether it be a tennis court, crosstraining center, traveling or the theater, meet people who are in authentic environments of interest to you—instant talking points. “I love to share a nice bottle of wine, but I’m not much of a bar person,” says Cindy Harper, an international flight attendant who has been single and dating for about eight years. “I meet people at the activities I do the most, such as running, dancing, kayaking, skiing and biking.”

Reset expectations

If you’re so focused on things like a woman’s red hair when you prefer brunettes, or a man’s Honda when you prefer BMWs, you could be overlooking the partner that’s actually the best fit for you (and your heart). “Don’t judge a book by its cover…be open to going out with a lot of different people. The more people you meet, the better chances of meeting one that’s a great fit for you,” Dr. Ackerman says. Brooke suggests making three lists and putting them into a dating journal. 1. Relationship non-negotiables. These are things you absolutely won’t tolerate in a relationship, such as someone with a substance abuse problem. 2. Character traits. These are the things you are looking for in a partner, such as kindness, intelligence and humor. 3. Description of your “dream” partner. Here you can put more specific things, like financial status, looks and religion. Now compare your dating partners with your lists. If someone displays or communicates any of your non-negotiables, move on immediately (no matter how great the chemistry). But if someone doesn’t violate any of the non-negotiables and has most of the character traits on the list, give that person at least three dates before writing them off, even if they aren’t your dream person. www.bestselfconnect.com

Patrick adds, “Rather than going out on a mission to meet the perfect person, I focus on all the things that the city has to offer, having fun with friends and experiencing new things. I ultimately meet a lot of people that way, and it’s a lot less pressure on yourself.”

Technology talks

If you’re very busy and having a hard time meeting partners socially, consider online dating. “If done responsibly and carefully, online dating can be an excellent way to meet and date many more people,” Brooke says. She even recommends dating at least three people at a time until you find one that’s worthy of dating exclusively. “By dating several people at a time, you are less likely to invest everything in one person too quickly and are able to be more selective.”

Marriage material

Any long-term married couple will tell you that the road to marital success is always under construction. “Putting time into your marriage is kind of like health insurance,” says Teresa Kamm, 57, community volunteer and former director of development for private schools. She has been married to her husband Bob, 60, a retired bank president, for 33 years. “It’s a pain to pay it every month sometimes, but in the long run, it pays off big time!”

Communication is key

Any successful couple will say that communication is what makes a marriage work, but it’s not always easy with busy, multitasking lifestyles and stress factors like the economy. “Stress affects communication, so the important thing is to not get caught in a constant defensive power struggle. Successful long-term partners think about the themes of compromise and pragmatism, which means being willing to do something that makes sense, even if it’s not ‘your way,’” Dr. Ackerman says. Having trouble communicating? Dr. Ackerman suggests the following method: • Step back and give your partner five minutes to talk and get out everything that he or she is thinking. Do not interrupt, just listen. • With a pen and paper, jot down notes while he or she is speaking, as if you had a college exam coming up. Write down three to four key points that your partner just expressed. • Once he or she is done, read back the key points, showing that you truly listened and understand without any miscommunication. Always remember that you’re on the same team. “Life can be very tough, but knowing that my spouse and I are ‘on the same team’ makes for a lightness of heart,” Kamm says. In addition, place a high value on key core values, such as selflessness, honesty, integrity, faithfulness, respect and honor for each other.

NOT QUITE SO YOUNG, BUT STILL ACTIVE? DON’T LET SORE KNEES SLOW YOU DOWN.

Preserve the freshness

Make your relationship a priority, which means setting aside time for quality experiences and dates on a weekly or monthly basis. “Just like a garden, you have to keep watering and seeding marriage. If things disrupt your lawn, you have to take the time to re-nourish it to get it on the right path,” Dr. Ackerman notes. The Kamms’ date nights have kept their marriage mojo strong for all these years. Here’s what they do: • Have a family business date time, where you compare calendars and narrow down the options to a reasonable level, discuss finances; work on strategies for issues concerning children and more. • Have a relaxed and fun date time, where you go out to dinner, see a movie and do something you enjoy together. Do not criticize or bring up serious discussions on your fun night—no matter how tempting. • Plan a surprise date night every now and then for your partner.

Keep up the Curious George

When you first met and fell in love, there was so much you wanted to know about each other. “The moment you think you know what your significant other is thinking and feeling with 100 percent accuracy is the moment you stop being curious (and unfortunately, clueless) about what they really are thinking and feeling,” says Darryl A. Cobbin, marriage mentor and author of Before You Wed… Read This! “I encourage couples to embrace curiosity, ask questions for understanding and listen. Marriage doesn’t always have to be ‘happy,’ but it should be loving.” Cobbin advises married couples to jointly determine what being loved and loving means for them.

There are no ifs, ands or buts about it. Any way you shake it, divorce is painful. But it can also be an incredibly liberating time. “It may require more adjustment than you thought it would, but divorce can open up many new paths in life,” Dr. Ackerman says.

Kid Considerations What are the biggest issues/challenges that people face when they start dating again after divorce (and they also have children)? It is not just about you anymore. When you are out in the dating scene post-divorce, you are looking for not only a companion for yourself, but you are looking to add another member into your family.

How does that affect how they date, do the rules change at all?

The rules have changed now that you are divorced and a single parent. Most dating should be done on your “non-parenting” time away from the children. Regardless of the age of your children, the first time they see you out with someone other than their parent will be disconcerting. In fact, most professionals who work with children recommend that you don’t introduce your children to a love interest until you think that he/she may be the “one.” At that time, you will want to make sure your relationship can develop beyond just you two and into a family dynamic.

What are some do’s and don’ts that you can recommend?

Do make sure you include a morality clause in your divorce agreement. Morality clauses ensure that neither you nor your ex have overnight visits from members of the opposite sex (unless related by blood or marriage) when the children are present. Don’t expect to find a replacement parent for your children. Always respect and foster the relationship between your children and your ex-spouse. Courtesy of Divorce Concierge Service

impact their cases. “Strategic and informed support from an expert will help you navigate the divorce process better through this stressful life event,” LaScala says.

Give yourself a break

The experts at Mental Health America, (a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people live mentally healthier lives) say to give yourself permission to feel and to function at a lesser level than you’re used to for a period of time. “No one is superman or superwoman; take time to heal, regroup and re-energize.”

You’re not alone

“Studies of marriage suggest that up to 50 percent end in divorce, thus, you are not alone,” Dr. Ackerman says. He recommends researching the many support groups offered throughout the greater Atlanta area and considering counseling one-on-one with a psychologist or other mental health provider to help with the adjustment and learn what you might do differently in your next relationship. “I’ve been seeing a therapist once a month because it helps me to figure out what my role was in the divorce so as not to repeat past patterns again,” says Leigh Davis-Turner, 37, a corporate affairs and regional PR professional for HBO who has been divorced from her husband of 10 years for a few months, and separated since February 2011.

Positive lifestyle

Take care of yourself, do activities you love or discover new passions. Now might be a good time to take an adult education class that you have always wanted to take. You never know who (new friends or dating partners) you might meet in that class, Dr. Ackerman says. He is also an advocate of regular exercise as an effective technique for mood management. www.bestselfconnect.com

“I am getting through this period in my life by rediscovering the activities, like dance and attending music concerts and theater, that I love to do and haven’t for a while. Now I have more time to do the things that I put to the side because I was working on my relationship,” Davis-Turner says. She also says that it has opened her up spiritually, allowed her time to reflect and develop her spiritual practice, journal and explore more.

Flying solo is A-Okay

Being alone is probably the most empowering and scary thing that you can do, but the pursuit of yourself is just as important as anything else (job, friends, family). “I think that the relationship you have with yourself is so worth the time, the therapy, effort, exploration and indecision to figure out,” Davis-Turner says. “I’m taking the time to fall back in love with myself.”

Dating again?

After taking some time, the idea of dating again may be exciting and scary, having been out of the dating world for several years. “It’s important to widen your social circle when you’re leaving a divorce because so many people who know you, know you as the other person’s partner,” Davis-Turner says. “The fact that I’m 37 and clearer on what I do and don’t want, what I will and won’t put up with is very liberating because it gives me the opportunity to have more discretion in who I spend my time with.”

Dr. Parashar’s top ways to keep your heart healthy

The statistics surrounding heart disease are staggering. It’s the leading cause of death in the United States, with almost six million hospitalizations each year. Heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are responsible for about one third of the deaths in Georgia, but researchers and physicians are working hard to change this. In honor of American Heart Month, Best Self Atlanta has turned to the experts in some of Atlanta’s top facilities to find out what they’re doing to stay on the cutting edge of heart health.

Minimally Invasive Treatments

Regular Exercise By exercising regularly for at least 30 minutes a day, you can significantly improve your heart health. You don’t necessarily have to join a gym to get exercise. Engage in fun activities such as brisk walking, swimming, dancing, jogging or running. Find something you enjoy and do it regularly.

Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet A heart healthy diet consists of low-fat and low-cholesterol foods, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables high in fiber, and low salt intake. The recommended sodium per day is no more than 2,300 mg per day for a healthy adult, and no more than 1500 mg for those with any of the following hypertension risks: more than 51 years of age, African American, those who have diabetes, and of course, those who already have high blood pressure.

Reduce Your Stress Stress reduction by doing yoga, meditation and/or exercise is important in today’s hectic world.

Quit Smoking For regular smokers, this can be a lot easier said than done. Try talking with a doctor first to understand your best course of action. You might need to wear a nicotine patch, chew gum or try an alternative route like hypnotherapy.

If you are someone who swears by supplements, you may want to think twice. “One of the newest trials shows that vitamins and supplements don’t do much good, and they may in fact be harmful,” says Dr. Charles Brown, III, interventional cardiologist and medical director of Piedmont Heart Institute. “Listen to your physician’s recommendation on what medications to take instead of piling on the supplements.”

Treating Cardiovascular Disease The goal in treating cardiovascular disease is often to open narrowed arteries that cause symptoms like chest pains and shortness of breath. Depending on the severity of the blockages in your arteries, treatment may include medications, surgery or a combination of these. But first and foremost, your doctor will recommend a low-fat, low-sodium diet. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise three days a week, and of course, quit smoking and limit how much alcohol you consume.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved a new transcatheter heart valve that is expected to revolutionize the treatment of cardiovascular issues. “The device - called the Sapien valve - offers a new, non-surgical option for individuals experiencing failing aortic valves,” says Dr. Susmita Parashar, assistant professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Emory University School of Medicine. “The procedure provides an option for patients who are too frail or have other high-risk conditions that will not allow for open heart surgery.”

“Our communities are not often walkable, and our lifestyles are

valve surgery has been around for a long time, and in the correct patient, is still the preferred way to correct valve problems.”

The Latest Innovations Fortunately there are a number of technological advances that keep Atlanta’s top cardiologists on the cutting edge of heart health, and more importantly, help patients avoid the operating table. “For certain types of holes within the chambers of the heart, our interventional cardiologists can place a closure device to help seal the hole,” Dr. Kobylivker says. “Other procedures, such as robotic surgery on the mitral valve, have good success in repairing the mitral valve without opening the chest.”

blockage in the artery in the front of the heart and at least one other blood vessel with disease in it. “This approach is a best of both worlds strategy,” Dr. Parashar adds. “We combine the durability of surgery Atherosclerosis is a disorder of the arteries that occurs when fat, with the minimally invasive nature of stenting. cholesterol, and other substances build up in the walls of arteries It is optimal therapy with a minimally invasive causing them to harden and form structures called plaques. approach.”

Similarly, cardiologists can perform robotic surgery with a single vessel bypass of the Plaque heart with the use of drug-coated stents. Forms This is a method of revascularization that Dr. Mindy Gentry, a cardiologist at WellStar Plaque Cardiovascular Medicine, calls a “hybrid ruptures; procedure.” “With these hybrid procedures, blood both the surgeon and the interventional clot forms cardiologist are in the room,” she explains. “The surgeon doesn’t open the chest, but just uses small incisions to keep the patient from potentially having open heart surgery. The recovery time is better, and there are less complications.” Hybrid coronary revascularization is typically performed on a person who has a

Another innovative strategy is LDL apheresis, a treatment option for patients with dangerously high cholesterol. This procedure is similar to kidney dialysis, as it targets the “bad” cholesterol containing LDL. During a session of LDL apheresis, the patient’s blood is continually removed from their veins and run through a machine that separates out the plasma. While the rest of the blood is passed back to the patient through a different vein, the plasma is run through another part of the machine that removes the LDL in the plasma. As a result, the blood is “cleaned” of the bad cholesterol. The procedure takes between two and four hours and must be repeated every two to three weeks. In addition to these advances, Emory University Hospital is participating in a clinical trial called Simplicity-2 for treatment of patients with drug-resistant hypertension. The procedure is called renal sympathetic denervation, and it is a catheter-based approach that may have a role in treating select patients with uncontrolled hypertension.

No longer a candidate for open heart surgery, he was basically waiting to die until a team of specialized cardiologists at Piedmont Hospital offered a type of heart catheterization procedure (commonly referred to as a “CTO catheterization” or “CTO procedure”) that repaired a total occlusion in his coronary arteries. He no longer needs nitrate pills and can finally exercise and walk his dog. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is what keeps you healthy in the long run. But if you find yourself in trouble, seek professional help. Remember to be persistent, because new things happen all the time in medicine,” says Whittenberg. “I believe the best thing that ever happened to me is getting Dr. Anna Kalynych at Piedmont as my cardiologist. She is a superb physician and without her, I would not have gotten this procedure and my second chance.”

More about CTO As a minimally invasive procedure, doctors enter the body through an artery in the leg to approach the heart. Using guide wires the size of a human hair and with the help of live X-ray imaging, they advance through the coronary blockage. Once through, a balloon is inflated allowing for the placement of very small, specialized metal stents. Embedded within the artery wall, the stents serve as a scaffolding to help hold the artery open and prevent recurrent blockage.

Prevention As researchers and cardiologists continue to develop aggressive prevention programs, there is a strong push to screen for coronary disease. “There is a tremendous amount of cardiac disease that occurs without any symptoms, so we are screening a large part of the population who are at risk,” Dr. Brown says. “We perform a simple test that looks at coronary artery calcification. We call it ‘the mammogram of heart disease.’” If you are a smoker, overweight, over a certain age or have any other symptoms that would identify you as high risk, your physician will likely recommend having a calcium score done. In addition to screening for the prevention of heart disease, this often puts patients into the best treatment pathways. The Emory Division of Cardiology has also established the Women’s Heart Program to provide cardiac risk assessment, diagnosis and heart disease care specifically for women. “Many people don’t realize that more women than men die from heart disease every year,” Dr. Gentry says. “As a woman in this country, you are about 12 times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than breast cancer. Heart disease is different from other diseases like cancer because we know a healthy lifestyle can significantly prevent it.”

“Now I feel energized!” InShapeMD changed me forever. I started the medical weight loss program with low self-confidence and a lack of energy. As a result of the diet protocol and daily injections, I have discovered the physical and emotional benefits of HCG, as offered through InShapeMD. I regularly am asked about InShapeMD and continue to tell all of my friends and family about the many benefits of medical weight loss. I would enjoy the opportunity to share with others how my success story can become their success story. As a result of InShapeMD, I now feel energized, enjoy fitness activities, and changed for the good.

Caring For Your Own Heart While certain conditions like congenital heart defects can’t be prevented, many forms of heart disease can be avoided or treated with healthy lifestyle choices. “The number one thing we’re dealing with as a country is weight,” Dr. Brown says. “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t tell a patient they need to lose 40 or 50 pounds. Obesity has an effect on everything. It changes tendencies toward sleep apnea, which is a direct contributor to coronary disease. You’d be amazed at how many diseases go away when weight is reduced. Diabetes and high blood pressure often resolve themselves when people get closer to their ideal body weight.”

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

TMJ-Jaw Pain, Popping & Clicking? Does your jaw “lock up”, click or cause you pain when opened or closed or when you chew, do you have headaches that can’t seem to be diagnosed? The problem could be the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is formed by two bones, the skull’s temporal bone and the mandible, or jawbone. These two bones, two on each side, form the hinge-like joint called TMJ. It is the physical connection where the jaw meets the skull. The joint can become slightly out of place and cause multiple problems. Besides those mentioned above, other common symptoms can be pain when chewing, shoulder and neck stiffness, earaches, dizziness and unexplained headaches.

Often this is because TMJ dysfunction can place neurological strain on your body. Typically in TMJ syndrome the lower jaw (mandible) is extended forward. A head forward posture exaggerates the problem. This forward mandible aggravates the cervical ligament laxity, which increases the neck pain. Again an endless cycle of pain and disability is created in the neck, head, and face region. Eventually the mandible moves forward to the extent that it will stretch the lateral TMJ ligament and produce pain. Once the lateral TMJ ligament becomes lax the joint will click. It is important to note that clicking in any joint is an indication of ligament laxity of that joint. Joint clicking is never a normal or good sign. Joint clicking, whether it is in the TMJ, knee, neck, or lower back is almost always abnormal. The body’s compensatory mechanism for such a situation is to tighten muscles and to grow more bone. The end result will be degeneration, arthritis, and stiffness in that joint. A combination of Prolotherapy injections to strengthen both the cervical vertebrae and the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint combined with manipulations of the affected areas to realign the joints will often solve this problem. St. Joseph’s Mercy Care Services in downtown Atlanta.

The medical services provided by St. Joseph’s Mercy Care Services are extensive and go well beyond the walls of their Decatur Street and satellite locations. There are festivals where the homeless receive health checkups, entertainment, a hot meal and a kind word. Multiple teams are on the streets every day, reaching out to the homeless where they live – in parks, under bridges, deep in the woods and in shelters. Teams provide water, hygiene kits, referrals for shelters and free clothing, and hope.

Brian Toole. Lovette Pitts. Stanley Craigwell. Valerie Scott. The list went on until the names of 33 lost souls were read. But there were more. In the silence others came forward to light candles in remembrance for the men and women who had died on the streets of Atlanta in 2011. Forty in total, a candle lit for each to dispel the darkness of the dreary, rainy December evening. December 21, 2011 was National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. On this night throughout the country, the homeless and those who fight for an end to homelessness gathered to remember those men, women and children who died in the past year. A crowd of around 100 gathered in the garage of

No Kid Hungry Campaign Governor Deal recently launched “Feeding for a Promising Future – No Kid Hungry Campaign”with Share Our Strength and Georgia Food Bank Association. The partnership aims to end childhood hunger by using proven strategies to increase the number of Georgia children who eat nutritious meals offered through summer and afterschool meal programs, and increase the number of families who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). You can join and take your own pledge to make sure no child in Georgia ever goes hungry as well as help raise awareness for the cause. They are also looking for volunteer culinary and nutrition experts. Details: www.nokidhungry.org/Georgia

I have had the great honor of participating as a volunteer in their outreach over the past five years. The Memorial Vigil is the highlight of each year for me. This service of remembrance makes the faceless and nameless people on the street real. Their plight is never more poignant than when we gather to pray for those who did not survive. As the service closed, my 13-year-old nephew, Joe and I went to work with about a dozen other volunteers. It was humbling to see the gratitude in the faces of those who came forward to receive gifts of coats and scarves, gloves and blankets. It seemed like so little, but means so much to them. I left the service joyful, knowing that I helped, if only in a small way. Details: www.mercycareservices.org

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation’s largest non-profit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. Whether you’re interested in volunteering a couple times a year or a couple times a week, there’s a place for you with a wide variety of opportunities to match your interests and expertise. Opportunities include being an advocate for change by working to strengthen laws, becoming a trained victim advocate, speaking out at schools, civic groups and organizations, raising funds and awareness through community events, distributing MADD red ribbons to encourage people not to drink and drive, coordinating victim impact panels and more. my journey Mark Vescio

Race creator overcomes childhood obesity It’s hard to believe that the same man who has run over 500 races was once a teenager who weighed over 300 pounds. At 15, Mark Vescio knew that if he didn’t change his ways it would mean the difference between life and death. Following the example of his parents, who both ran for exercise, he took that critical first step toward leaving obesity behind and leading a healthier life. What were some of the struggles you had to overcome because of your weight? Accepting defeat. Admitting out loud what I always knew was the hardest. But even though I lost the battle, I won the war. I can’t change the past but I can control the future. Can you describe the point in your life when you knew you had to change your diet? There was never one really defining “I’ve had enough” moment. It was all one step at a time, slowly building confidence. The more confident I became, the more I was willing to change. What was your biggest motivator to get healthier? Not wanting to die. Once I saw the changes, I was able to open my eyes and realize I was on the fast path of self-destruction. How did you start running marathons? It just was a natural progression. I got fairly competitive in my younger years and I talked my running buddies into running Marine Corp with me. Once I completed that one, the marathon bug hit! What is The 5K Challenge and how do you hope it will impact the fight against childhood obesity? The 5K Challenge is my new baby. The intent is to create a support network so that the whole family is engaged in making better lifestyle choices. We try to make it easier with fun, healthy recipes, weekly family exercise challenges and of course, the 5K races to use as motivation to stay on track. We also give discounts to the schools, and the school that wins the challenge (by having the most participants vs. total enrollment) gets a matching donation of $5 per runner for their school from the race to be used for exercise equipment. I am really looking forward to this one. How did you begin speaking on the subject of childhood obesity in local schools in Cobb County? I was asked to arrange for a group to speak, and they had to cancel at the last moment. Someone suggested I step in and tell my story. The rest is history. I can relate personally to the subject so it is easy for me to speak about it to a group of kids. What made you decide to form the Locomotive Race Series and Anything is Possible 5K? I wanted to share my love of running with others. There is nothing more thrilling than creating a race from scratch and putting all 66

the pieces together. It is a lot of work but it is a labor of love. The series is designed to create a full year’s worth of racing and gradually step up the distances to help people complete a half marathon. The races are spread apart so that they create benchmarks, and by getting people to agree to run for an entire year, they are making a yearlong commitment to health and fitness. The Anything is Possible race started more on a dare. It was out of the box and I truly expected 100 people to show up. When I saw 1,000 people show up, I knew I was on to something. So we made it a big party and celebration. Runners look for something unique, and my races tend to fit that description. Besides running, how else do you lead a healthy life? I have been a vegetarian for 20 years now. I hike, bike and walk. I used to climb when I was younger but I have a family and need to be more responsible! As a person who has experienced being overweight, what is some advice you can give to people who want to lose extra pounds? Don’t get wrapped up in a number. Break it into small pieces and make small adjustments gradually. For instance, skip one fast food meal and replace it with a healthy meal. The little subtle changes will pay great dividends in a friendly atmosphere. What inspires you every day? My kids, knowing the future is wide open for them and doing everything I can to make that happen for them. Also, knowing I can change someone’s life today, every day. Where do you see yourself in five years? I plan on continuing the races and developing new ones. I also plan on growing my coaching business to help others, as well as expanding on the childhood obesity program. I was fortunate enough to change my life around, and I feel it is only right to give back all I can to help others. For more information, www.locomotiveraceseries.com www.bestselfconnect.com
