Always Wear a Smile This sounds so corny, but it is one of those things my mom told me over and over again when I was a kid. And it is probably some of the best advice I have ever received. We all pretty much know why this is good advice. But, just to be clear - when you smile, endorphins are released in the brain, thereby relieving stress and relaxing the body. The next best reason to smile is it can affect those in your presence in a positive way. Whether making them feel better about their day or having them respond positively to you, it is nothing but good. But what if you just don’t feel like doing it? When you need a little incentive and extra motivation, I recommend trying something from My Best List. Who knows? It may just have you grinning from ear to ear. Keep smiling!

A new adventure

Growing up in New York, my outdoor activities involved riding a bike on the concrete sidewalks of the city and playing tag with friends on the grassy lawn of the campus at Columbia University. Unless you had a country house, you were out of luck in getting much closer to nature than Central Park.

Look Your Best with Cuts, Color, Keratin & More!

Dry winter weather have you down? Try our 4-Stage moisturizing treatment that rejuvenates, restores, replenishes and adds shine! Stages include: Mud Mask, Cortical Oil Antioxidant Foam, Shine Sealer $35 for March (reg $75)

One of the best parts of moving from New York to Atlanta is the variety of outdoor spots. I was like a kid in a candy store – hiking up Stone Mountain, walking through Piedmont Park and learning to stand-up paddle board at Morgan Falls Overlook Park. Whether you’ve enjoyed these outdoor gems all your life or have just moved here, they never seem to get old. Read more about why nature feeds your mind and body in our outdoor feature (p. 31). An integral part of having fun outside is keeping your feet healthy. Learn how to protect your toes and soles with advice and tips from Atlanta’s foot specialists (p. 47). Finally, our interview with nature expert and host of GPB’s “Georgia Outdoors” Sharon Collins (p. 41) shows us it’s never too late to get outside and commune with nature. Happy Reading!

FitGirl Pick of the Month I am a huge advocate of adding natural juices into your daily diet. Specifically the kind that contains fresh kale, spinach, beets, apples, ginger and more. When asked to try a liver cleanse, I thought, heck yes! Sometimes we can stress the liver through the foods we eat or the chemicals we are exposed to. I tried the Dtox 7 Day Liver Cleanse, and afterward I felt amazing. This cleanse works by nourishing and cleaning the liver through a series of juice mixtures. If you want to try this cleanse, head over to DTOX Juice and tell them FitGirl sent you. Cheers to your health! $70 per day. 3210 Roswell Road, Ste. Good old fashioned lunges work wonders from the calves all the way up to the butt. Tammy Stokes of West Coast Workout recommends her Hollywood Lunges, which can be found in her book, “Live Your Healthiest Life: Mind, Body & Soul.” This workout is comprised of six moves to get your legs looking their best. After creating the shape you desire, Tammy says you can go a few steps further by using body scrubs, dry brushing and hydrating with your favorite leg cream. The book is $21. Details: www.westcoastworkout.com

2

Sometimes spider veins or bulging veins can make wearing shorts and skirts a bit embarrassing. Luckily, there are a variety of vein treatments - both surgical and nonsurgical - to get rid of or reduce unsightly veins. Whatever type of veins you are having issues with, you should see an expert so they can determine the best treatment for you. Details: See our reader resources (p. 69)

for a list of vein experts in the city.

3

Scrub up and wax off at Sweet Peach Wax & Sugaring Studio. Treat your legs to the ultimate indulgence with a green tea body scrub, which works to dissolve dead skin cells, leaving legs refreshed and soft. Follow up this service by sugaring off that unwanted hair. Less painful than waxing, the sugar grains adhere only to the hair, not the skin, leaving behind a smooth surface. Details: 776 North Highland Ave.

4

Protect the health of your legs during a workout with Mizuno Compression Socks. Their lightweight design is shock absorbent and helps to reduce muscle instability while walking or running on any type of terrain. It also applies pressure from the calf to the ankle, making it helpful for recovery. $29.99 Details: Mizuno Running, (770) 441-5553,

5

Keep legs limber and decrease muscle tension by incorporating stretching into your routine. Dr. Alan H. Bragman, DC recommends an effective method of stretching called “active isolated stretching” (AIS), which incorporates an eight-foot length of nylon rope. In AIS, you don’t hold a stretch for 10 to 30 seconds as you would in traditional stretching. Instead, you use the rope to gently assist you in pulling the muscles. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add garlic and cook one minute. Add Swiss chard; cover the skillet and cook, stirring frequently, until chard is tender, 8 to 10 minutes; add a few tablespoons of water if the skillet begins to dry out. Remove from the heat and pour off any excess liquid. Stir in 1/2 cup of the Parmigiano Reggiano and half the tomato. Spoon the mixture evenly into the ramekins. Break an egg into each ramekin and sprinkle with remaining cheese. Pile remaining tomato around eggs and season generously with salt and pepper. Place on a baking sheet and bake until egg whites are almost completely set, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool 5 minutes before serving.

Bring a little ease back into your schedule with Bake. This eatery is a community-oriented restaurant that makes it easy for health-conscious diners to grab a delicious meal on-the-go. The daily changing menu at this family-friendly restaurant offers a wide variety of fresh, preservative-free food to satisfy any palate. Chocolate often gets a bad rap. However in some ways it can be beneficial to your heart, in moderation. The cocoa bean is rich in a class of plant nutrients called flavonoids, which is believed to have antioxidant benefits. This may be one of the reasons Park 75 Restaurant and Lounge at Four Seasons in Midtown has chosen to showcase this sweet treat in some of its dishes. Every Friday and Saturday night from March 1 – 23, the restaurant will offer a special chocolate menu featuring up to 10 decadent creations. The menu will showcase chocolate sourced from around the globe, as well as Park 75’s own “bean to bar” chocolate, created in-house from fair trade cacao beans. In addition to desserts, executive chef Robert Gerstenecker has created a four-course dinner with items like cocoa butter seared scallops with a cocoa vinaigrette and a cocoa nib crusted duck breast. Dinner is $55 per person and the chocolate menu is priced from $4 to $5.

Take a Walk on the Dark Side By Iman Naim

If you love a good story and the challenge of hiking at night, then head over to Sweetwater Creek State Park on March 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. for their Candlelight Hike. Discover the historical ruins that will take you back to the days of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill that was burned during the Civil War. This mile-long hike through the state park follows a stream directly to the remains of the mill. Don’t be put off by the idea of trekking through the darkness; all hikers will be provided with candle lanterns. This is an adult-only adventure, so no children under six years of age or dogs are allowed on the hike. Participants will meet and register at the Interpretive Center. Registration is $5 and parking is $5. Details: Sweetwater Creek State Park, 1750 Mt. Vernon Road, Lithia Springs, GA, (770) 732-5871, www.gastateparks.org/SweetwaterCreek

Atlanta doctors answer to your questions

Q

I have a son going through puberty and he’s starting to grow hair on his face. He is extremely frustrated with breakouts. I am worried about possible acne scarring. What would you suggest?

a

This is a very common challenge for male teens between the ages of 14 and 18. New, thicker hair begins to grow, and without proper cleansing and exfoliation, can become trapped beneath the surface developing into ingrown hairs. This Paige Camp, MD environment creates the buildup of bacteria in and around the Marietta Dermatology follicle. Teaching techniques on proper cleansing and shaving & The Skin Cancer Center are essential at this age.

Q

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental appointment by age one or six months after the eruption of the first tooth. There are many reasons why this is a good idea. Seeing children this early decreases the chances of cavities by providing parents with oral hygiene instructions and tips. A cleaning and fluoride treatment helps strengthen the teeth, making them more cavity resistant. The child also becomes more comfortable in the dental setting with earlier visits.

I have occasional knee pain when I’m active. Should I see a doctor for an evaluation?

Knee pain is a very common complaint. The most important symptom to look for is swelling within the knee. An injury to the structures of the knee will lead to fluid accumulation within the joint known as an effusion. Other important symptoms to look for include mechanical complaints such as popping or clicking, a feeling of instability or a change in range of motion. These Daniel Nicholson, MD symptoms may indicate an injury which could be exacerbated Perimeter Orthopaedics, P.C. by continued activity and should be evaluated by a physician.

Q

When should I take my child to his or her first dental appointment?

Every spring, the pollen inevitably plagues me. Besides over-the-counter antihistamines, which only work some of the time, what can I do?

When OTC meds fail to relieve allergy symptoms, you should consider seeing a board-certified allergist who can determine your specific allergy triggers. Knowing your triggers and checking the pollen count in the morning can alert you on days when you should take extra precautions, such as keeping house and car windows closed, and avoiding outdoor activities. Your allergist can also offer treatment options that are more effective than OTC medications, including prescription nasal sprays and immunotherapy or allergy shots.

What are Actinic Keratoses? Actinic Keratoses are precancerous lesions that are most commonly found on the head and upper extremities. They present as scaly patches which often sting. Actinic Keratosis are caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or indoor tanning. They are considered precancerous because they can lead to non-melanoma skin cancers. It is best to treat them before this transformation occurs. A dermatologist can easily treat them in the office and/or may prescribe creams to use at home. Gabrielle Sabini, MD Actinic Keratosis is preventable by using sun screen and North Atlanta Dermatology sun protective clothing.

News, advice, prevention and more

Reduce Your Risk DON’T rely on pills for nutrition. Pills cannot substitute for a whole food. Foods contain much more than just vitamins and minerals. Phytochemicals are naturally occurring substances found in fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains that may offer defenses against cancer.

DO drink water. You might think it is bland compared with soft drinks and coffee, but the cells in your body don’t think so. For added flavor, try adding fresh fruits, cucumber slices or lemon and lime wedges to ice-cold water. DO eat a “mixed” breakfast. Include foods containing a

little carbohydrate, a little protein and a little fat. For example, eggs and a bowl of fruit or a protein shake with soy milk and a banana includes three essential macronutrients, provides energy and tastes good too.

DON’T eat sugary foods in the morning. A burst of refined sugar

on an empty stomach will trigger a flood of insulin that suppresses the immune system and feeds any abnormal cells (which exist in everyone’s body).

Good-bye Cellulite! Eliminate Unwanted Fat & Dimpling on Legs, Belly & Back Non-Invasive No Downtime No Lasers

Pioneered in Italy, and featured on DR. OZ, this is the newest FDA approved treatment course that delivers measurable results without painful surgery, injections or lasers. We combine 4 amazing technologies that attack the problem of Cellulite using the most advanced science available today. Our protocol delivers superior and un-matched results in the beauty industry. Ultrasonic Cavitation, Radio Frequency Waves, NASA pioneered therapies & Lymphatic massage are layered to reduce and eliminate stubborn adipose fat pockets. Treatments also smooth annoying dimpling, while tightening loose skin and weak muscles.

Customized Treatments. Serious Science. Real Results.

DO eat less fat. The

average American eats the equivalent of a stick of margarine a day, most of which is hidden in processed foods. However, because some fat is necessary, try to increase your consumption of healthier fats such as plant oils (olive oil, canola oil, walnuts and flaxseed).

especially if it’s hydrogenated (check food labels). These fats are immune-suppressive, and researchers are linking hydrogenated fats to increased free radicals, which are destructive to cells. For the same reason, butter is a better choice than margarine.

DO increase the amount of fiber in your diet.

Ask about our QUICK START Series & Save Even More

Fiber helps maintain the health of your colon. Check food labels for high-quality fiber ingredients such as psyllium seed, psyllium husk, oat bran, mucilages, gums and pectin. Remember to drink more water while increasing fiber intake.

Must Mention Offer Code 3 Spring

DO eat nutrient-dense foods every day. Try to regularly consume yogurt, orange vegetables (carrots, squash and sweet potatoes), vegetables in the cabbage family, tomatoes, citrus fruits and dark green leafy vegetables. Remember, go for color- the deeper the color of a fruit or vegetable, the more nutrients it provides. -- Courtesy of Crystal Langlois, RD, CSO, LD, Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Newnan, GA, www.cancercenter.com

CONNECT to Your Inside by Getting Outside Physical benefits of enjoying nature and where to go By Taylor Arnold With springtime on the horizon, there’s no better time to get out and enjoy the many outdoor activities in and around Atlanta. Research has shown that spending time in nature is associated with decreased blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as stress reduction and a boost in creativity. The health benefits of nature have also been linked to prevention of diabetes, asthma, arthritis, musculoskeletal conditions and even cancer. If this has you itching to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, you’re in luck, because this is the season to take advantage of all of the outdoor activities metro Atlanta has to offer. From hiking and camping to rafting and climbing, we’re breaking down the best places to get back to nature.

The Case for Getting Outdoors If you thought getting outside was just a luxury during the warm weather months, think again. According to the U.S. Forest Service, parks and other natural environments are a fundamental health resource, particularly in terms of disease prevention. A single trip to nature actually provides maintenance levels of cells that work to prevent cancer development. And it’s never too early to reap the benefits of getting outdoors. The National Wildlife Federation found that spending time outside raises levels of vitamin D, helping protect children from future bone problems, heart disease, diabetes and other health issues.

Getting back to nature can do wonders for your mental health as well. A Japanese study in 2009 found that breathing in antimicrobial compounds found in the essential oils of trees increases relaxation and improves stress management, which translates to less anxiety, depression and anger. An added bonus to exercising outdoors is that it can trick your body into working harder while feeling it less. A 2011 study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that people who walked on an outdoor track moved at a faster pace, perceived less exertion and experienced more positive emotions than those who walked on an indoor treadmill. So are you ready to be outside yet? Check out these great outdoor spots, breathe in some fresh air and get moving! 

Try Slacklining If you’re wondering what a slackline is, it’s like a tightrope that’s purposefully kept loose (or “slack”). This allows you to bounce and sway with the line as you walk, while at the same time working on your balance, posture and core strength. It is also great for your focus, as slacklining requires intense concentration to stay upright. Instead of a rope, a slackline is flat webbing like the ones you might use as slings while climbing. The best part? All you need to slack are two trees that are a good distance apart and a few key accessories. In Atlanta, you can try slacklining in pretty much any park or outdoor space with sturdy trees.

Go Rock Climbing

Beginners should start with the line about 12 inches off the ground, but experienced slackers and rock climbers often go much higher. Most slacklining experts recommend three to five carabiners, a couple of slings to go around the trees and about 20 to 30 feet of webbing. You can find this gear at just about any outdoor store that caters to climbers, or simply go online to purchase a slacklining kit.

Mountain High Outfitters (MHO) hosts practice sessions for climbers of all levels at local gyms like Atlanta Rocks and outdoor crags like Allenbrook. Their knowledgeable staff is available to answer questions about technique, good climbing locations, gear, appropriate clothing and more. For information on their practice sessions and competitions visit their website.

haron Collins is sitting inside a dimly lit cave, wearing an expression of wonderment as a

flurry of bats dart over her head. She is poised and calm as she asks her nature guide a series of questions, all the while never flinching as one of the bats comes dangerously close to her face. “If you don’t like bats, if the thought of them makes your skin crawl, this show will change your mind,” she says confidently into the camera. Whether she is stand-up kayaking on the Altamaha

of nature and adventurous spirit would lead her to the path that would eventually become her career. Although she admits she didn’t plan on having a job in the environmental field at first, Collins still gravitated toward it. She started her professional career in radio, switched to television and eventually became assistant news director/ managing editor for WSET-TV in Virginia. It was during that time she launched a multi-faceted station initiative called Project Environment. The station also ran an eco-based story on the six o’clock news each night. “That started the ball rolling and helped me land a job with TBS and CNN,” she says. At TBS she was hired as a host and correspondent on the show, “Network Earth,” which was later repurposed and aired on CNN under the title “Earth Matters.” CNN brought her on board in 1991, and within a few months she was sent to Brazil to cover the Earth Summit. During her time with CNN, she was awarded a national Emmy for her contribution to the CNN special “In Nature’s Wake,” a program detailing floods in the Mississippi River Valley. “The current president of GPB hired me at CNN,” she says. “When she began looking at the programs, she asked me to take a look at “Georgia Outdoors” and give her some feedback. I was asked to rework the show and the rest is history.”

to indulge her love of the outdoors. She considered the forest her playground and would spend countless hours outside swinging on tree vines, scampering over boulders and catching critters in the stream. “My father worked for C&P, AT&T and BellSouth, and we moved about every two years,” Collins explains. “When you’re always the ‘new kid,’ you learn to make friends quickly, but you also spend a lot of time alone.” No matter where her family moved, she always appreciated her natural surroundings. “I loved the field in front of our house in Fanwood, New Jersey,” she recalls. “In Charleston, West Virginia, I used to skip school and hang out in Kanawha State Forest, a beautiful area with huge boulders and caves. My father always had us outside, playing in the snow or visiting a park.” She says she may have been a “handful” for her parents, but she soon discovered her love

Being exposed to new, natural wonders is at the core of what makes “Georgia Outdoors” such a unique show. “Many viewers write to thank us for informing them about an animal, place or issue they knew nothing about,” Collins says. “I hope that showing people what we have within driving distance is enough incentive to yank them away from the video games.” So, the next time you have a free moment, Collins encourages you to step outside instead of reaching for the TV remote. Being outside not only offers relief from stress and boredom, but also gives you an appreciation for the great outdoors. “Just sit still for about 15 minutes, and nature begins to move around you,” she says. “Birds come closer; chipmunks fly across the grass and a lizard may crawl across your feet.” The good news is, unless you’re Sharon Collins, there is little to no chance of encountering a bat.

Each season brings a new adventure and a chance to share information with the public about the amazing animals and locations throughout the state. Collins has come face-to-face with loggerhead “Georgia Outdoors” airs on Fridays at 8:30 p.m. turtles, crabs, frogs and snakes. She’s explored and Saturdays at 6 p.m. www.gpb.org/georgia-outdoors roaring waterfalls, steep canyons and deep rivers. “It’s all so beautiful. Rocks, trees, sky, birds – there’s just so much to see, and it is always changing.” This is just one example of the can-do, fearless attitude she takes with her all over the state as the host of Georgia Public Broadcasting’s (GBP) nature show, Collins is constantly thinking of ways to improve the show and bring “Georgia Outdoors.” Sharing the natural treasures that Georgia has to offer is all interesting content to viewers. “It has been a dream to follow a migratory in a day’s work. Now in her third season with the show, she not only serves as the bird outfitted with a radio transmitter, such as a Whimbrel,” she says. “These host, but has also produced 21 episodes. “The beauty of this job is working with amazing birds fly thousands of miles nonstop from Georgia to the arctic, then some incredibly committed people,” she says. “They have taught me how to hold down to South America. I want to follow them, document their flight, and a bat, handle a snake and pick up a pelican. What more can a girl ask for?” track them down at each location. It would take a lot of time and money, but Collins is no stranger to spending quality time with Mother Nature. As a child, she I believe those are the kinds of stories that make viewers really understand the lived in a house that was surrounded by woods, a creek and plenty of opportunity magnificent abilities of animals they may never otherwise be exposed to.”

Up Close and Personal with Sharon: What was your first job? I pumped gas at an all-girl gas station. If you did not have your current job, what other vocation do you think you’d be good at? Landscaping. Also, when no one is listening, I’m a great singer.

What journey into nature have you not yet taken? Africa. I have traveled to many parts of the world, but never managed to make it to that continent. What are some of your favorite outdoor activities? I built a koi pond, and ripped out all my grass for a more natural environment. I haul mulch, move rocks, prune, plant and have a wonderful time. I could spend every day doing something in my yard. I also like to walk a lot. What are some of the biggest lessons nature has taught you? Patience. I can’t make something happen. Nature rules and we just follow along to make this show. I am a type A personality, so that is sometimes a difficult thing for me to deal with. I’ve also learned that the saying, “Everything is connected,” is so very true.

Who are the people that help you be your best self? Those who are missing limbs, struggling with a horrible disease or living in poverty because they have lost a job and cannot find another. Whenever I feel sorry for myself, or start complaining about things that aren’t going my way, I see or hear about someone with much bigger obstacles and shut my mouth. What have you learned about yourself since starting the show? I suppose I’m stronger than I thought. When I crawled down a sinkhole into the mouth of a cave, I was really afraid. One wrong move and I could have been seriously hurt, but I did it. I’ve also learned how much I enjoy being close to a wild animal. Happy, Healthy Feet Stay active by keeping your toes and soles at their best By Sarah E. King

T

hese days, we all lead demanding and active lives. In a single outing, we can run to the store, pick up the dry cleaning, spend a few hours at the office, throw in a workout, stand in line at the bank and take the dog for a walk. We are constantly on the go, and always on our feet, ready to tackle the next errand or take on the next “to-do.” But have you ever stopped to think about the intricate and biological wonder that has taken you to all those places? Your feet. Made up of 52 bones and more than 100 ligaments, tendons and muscles all working together, this crucial part of your body works hard to keep you on the move. When was the last time you took into account how much your feet affect your lifestyle, and for that matter, how much your lifestyle affects your feet? “The foot is the most complicated part of the body, but the most neglected by most people,” says Raymond Margiano, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Foot Solutions, Inc., which focuses on providing a line of shoes, arch supports and foot care accessories. “A lot of people don’t understand it, but the feet are the foundation of your body, similar to the foundation of a building. Over time, you start seeing stress cracks in the foundation, and the building starts to lean. The foundation of your body is critical to your alignment; everything above your feet needs that solid support.” Margiano, who has been in the footwear and pedorthic industry for more than 20 years, is not alone in his opinion. Dr. Carl Kihm, podiatric physician and surgeon with Village Podiatry Centers, says we oftentimes take our feet for granted until we experience an ongoing problem that is painful or debilitating. “Our feet are our foundation and they allow us to be mobile and live,” Dr. Kihm says. “If the bones and joints of your foot and/or ankle are in poor condition, this can affect your posture, pace, the pressure distribution and time spent on each foot while walking, which can ultimately lead to knee, hip and back pains.”

Dr. Kihm, who sees patients at Village Podiatry Center’s Marietta-Kennestone and Douglasville offices, says early assessment and treatment is the optimal way to keep your feet healthy. “Do not ignore your feet. If they hurt, you should listen to your body and you should not try to deal with the pain,” he says. “Consider which factors make them feel worse and avoid these.” Clearly, paying attention to your feet and what your body is telling you are the first steps in obtaining happy and healthy feet. But what are we dealing with here? And what do we do to tackle common foot problems?

The Usual Suspects Dr. David Scott of Resurgens Orthopaedics, who specializes in foot and ankle issues as well as trauma and knee surgeries, puts foot health into simple terms. “When you don’t take care of your feet, they hurt, and you don’t get to do what you like to do,” he says. “Take care of your feet, and you get a lifetime of foot health and wellness.” However, despite the straightforward advice, 10 to 20 percent of people have some kind of recurring or chronic foot problem. Here are a few of the more common ailments:

Bunions:

A bunion is a condition where the big toe gradually dislocates, and can get more severe and painful over time. This condition is caused by the bone structure of your feet, which is hereditary. Dr. Kihm says some shoes can make the condition more painful, but shoes are not the cause of bunions. Treatment: “Wide-toed shoes and padding may be helpful to reduce this kind of pain,” Dr. Kihm says. “However, because bunions are a bone condition, sometimes, surgery is required to address and correct the bony etiology and painful deformity.”

Hammertoe:

A hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes, in which the toe is bent at the middle joint. If left untreated, a hammertoe may become fixed and require surgery. Treatment: “Everything in your body has some kind of balance, such as the bicep and the tricep in your arm,” Dr. Scott says. “The hammertoe is a sort of imbalance in the toe where the first knuckle is bent up and the second knuckle gets bent down.” Dr. Scott says a hammertoe can be surgically straightened by removing the knuckle and lengthening the tendons. The knuckle is then fused straight. “You have to balance all of the joints to correct the hammertoe,” he says. Dr. Scott

also says forefoot problems in the ball of your foot may be the result of tight calf muscles. “When your calf muscle is tight, it puts more pressure on the ball of your foot when you walk,” he says. “People who experience bunions and hammertoes should have their calf muscles checked, and if tight and causing more pressure on the ball of your foot, they should be lengthened during surgery.”

Corns:

Corns are pressure-induced callus formations on the toes. Dr. Kihm says each patient is assessed individually to determine why these are occurring. Treatment: “Your podiatrist can usually trim your corn and this can allow for an immediate relief of pain,” he says. “If your shoes are too tight or if you have hammertoes associated with these corns, these can be causative factors that need to be addressed to prevent the corns from returning.” Padding around the toes can also reduce the pressures that create corns. However, Dr. Kihm says he cautions people with poor sensation, especially diabetic patients, not to use medicated corn pads. “These contain salicylic acid that dissolves away the corn, but can also dissolve away healthy skin and create wounds and more severe problems.”

Plantar fasciitis:

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the strong band of tissue that supports the arch of your foot becomes irritated and inflamed. The bottom of the heel becomes tender and sore. Dr. Scott says there are many factors that cause plantar fasciitis. “The aging of the tendon and the stress we put on it in dayto-day life is one factor,” he says. “We are also heavier than we should be, and not as athletic as we should be.” Dr. Scott says while sometimes there is an event where you may injure your heel, very frequently, there is not one factor to put your finger on.

The Elaine Sterling Institute and Spa The Premiere Skincare Institute in Atlanta

Treatment: “Given enough time, plantar fasciitis will actually go away, but you can do things to speed it up,” Dr. Scott says. Maintaining a healthy body weight, stretching the upper calf muscle, wearing good footwear or anti-inflammatory medications are all possible forms of treatment. “Ninetyfive percent of heel pain, however, gets better with stretching,” he says.

Ingrown Nails:

HAPPY FEET $40 - One hour Aromatherapy foot soak, feet, hands and scalp massage-pure bliss.

An ingrown nail occurs when the side of the nail grows into the skin. When left untreated, the irritated nail can create infection. Causes include footwear that crowds the toes, not properly cutting the nail or toenail injury. Treatment: Dr. Kihm says to prevent ingrown nails, avoid cutting your nails too short and do not cut them on a sharp curvature. If you develop an ingrown nail, see your podiatrist for treatment; an in-office procedure is oftentimes performed, which can remove the ingrown nail and prevent it from returning.

“Take care of your feet, and you get a lifetime of foot health and wellness.”

with Dr. Venus Von Mock Ask the Hypnotherapy Specialist How can Hypnotherapy help me with relationships? Our relationship with others begins with the relationship with ourselves. How we feel about ourselves directly influences how we interact with others and how they respond to us. For instance: Are you defensive, guarded, distant, or needy? Are you repeating the same dysfunctional relationships? Have you become a victim of attacks from others or a “doormat”? Would you like to be able to open up to love, trust and share more? As a clinical hypnotherapist I help people discover the true sources of limitations, resolve internal conflicts, restore confidence and self-love. This is an empowering approach that naturally and authentically improves relationships, thus, attracting more amicable relationships. Remember, “Like energy attracts like energy”. What do my relationships have to do with spirituality? Sometimes soul matters enter into the equation of relationships such as, karma, soul agreements, soulmate and past life connections. These Spiritual matters of the heart are often uncovered in hypnotherapy sessions. Gaining insight about these connections can help resolve conflicts that cause toxicity in relationships.

Certain aches and pains can be avoided by simply paying attention to the shoes you put on your feet. Margiano says most foot problems are caused or aggravated by wearing ill-fitted shoes. “Ninety percent of people are not wearing properly fitted shoes… you want to wear shoes like the shape of your foot, with room and support for walking or running,” he says. “Your foot takes the impact if you’re not supporting it properly.” For women, the daily use of high-heels is a major culprit in foot pain. “Women will have five times more issues with their feet than men, and the main reason is the female tendency to wear shoes more for appearance than for comfort,” Margiano says. For a woman to avoid issues due to high-heels, Margiano suggests not wearing heels higher than 1.5 to 2 inches, as well as wearing high-heels in moderation. “You don’t want to force your feet into this awkward position,” he says. “Heels slam those toes into a narrow wedge, and are the leading cause for bunions and hammertoes.” But men aren’t free from shoe discomfort either. According to Dr. Kihm, men are five times more likely to have a traumatic fracture of their heel bone than women. “These kinds of injuries are usually experienced when jumping or falling from a height, and since men, for example, work more frequently on roofs, this makes sense.” Dr. Scott says men are also more prone to overuse and sports-related injuries, and injuries among his male and female patients are equal. However, women still take the brunt of footwear-related pain. “I see two or three women patients for every male,” he says. “Women are in for more shoe-related issues due to restrictive footwear, and I see more foot and ankle issues with women.” Flip-flops and ballet flats, which offer little arch support, are also a concern for health care professionals. Margiano says there are many

BEST SELF ATLANTA

foot injuries that result from the foot not being supported, like fallen arches. “Your foot, overtime, will collapse, and being flat footed puts more pressure on your ankle and knees,” Margiano says. “You can purchase custom inserts for flats or heels to support the arch… a lot of things can be done for fashionable footwear. When you put in an insert, your foot feels better and feels more supported.” Dr. Kihm says there are many different reasons for fallen arches, and some may have more to do with heredity. “If this problem is noted in children, or since childhood, this typically reflects the patient’s inherited bone structure of the arch of his or her feet,” he says. “When this problem arises in adulthood, the cause can be the result of tendon damage and dysfunction. We commonly see this in older and overweight females, and it commonly only involves one foot at a time.” For an inherited or developed issue, Dr. Kihm suggests wearing supportive sneakers with rigid arch supports to help prevent or treat these conditions. However, when pain, fatigue or weakness is associated with fallen arches, Dr. Kihm warns that you should report for a physical exam, as these conditions may get worse with time.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

Understanding the steps to take in addressing foot problems will help put you on the right track for a healthier lifestyle. And taking care of your feet can be a simple process. Dr. Scott offers this final advice: “Keep your weight near your ideal range, pick your activities carefully. When you change activities, you should change it in a gradual way so your feet don’t fracture or break. Wear comfortable shoes,” he says. “Also, calf stretching and a flexibility routine are important. Those who have stayed flexible as they age tend to do better. Flexibility should be a long-term part of everyone’s fitness goals.” Having the right footwear is crucial to maintaining healthy feet. But we don’t think about it as much as we should. According to Dr. Kihm, the pressure on your feet exceeds your bodyweight when walking, and can reach four times your body weight when running. “We don’t think about this a lot and maybe we ‘put up’ with our feet being sore or painful,” he says. “It should not be this way and it does not need to be. Proper footwear is very important so you can support and protect your feet as they function.”

Hiking Boots

Bubba Sloan, co-founder of High Country Outfitters, knows his way around a hiking boot. Sloan says, when it comes to footwear, making sure you have the proper fit is important. “If there was one shoe on the market that I think would fit everyone, I’d sell one shoe,” he says. To find the right boot keep these tips in mind: • The sole: You need sturdiness in the sole of the boot so the foot stays in a stable position. Boots which cover the ankle are not meant to prevent rolling your ankle, but to protect from rocks or other abuses on the trail. • Socks: Merino wool lets the foot breath and doesn’t cause temperatures to rise in the boot like synthetic socks. • Boots: A light weight, waterproof boot is a good starting point for new hikers.

Heels

For those who wear heels on a daily basis, it’s no surprise to hear that high heels cause a range of foot problems. • Dr. Kihm: “High heels change the forces on the foot as they shift the pressure to the front of the foot. They also have a narrow toe box, which crams the toes together, and can cause corns and calluses, or make bunions more painful.” • Dr. Scott: “It’s common sense and we all know it, but we like fashion. You’d rather look good than feel good sometimes. Shoes that are wide enough for your feet, with good thick bottoms, and don’t constrict the bone are ideal. Fashion footwear is tight, and doesn’t fit how the human foot was made… very few people can wear high heels when they’re older.”

Replenish Your Hair Guard against the elements for beautiful, shiny hair.

Tips from a pro

1. Take extra precautions when hitting the gym. Before going into the steam room, sauna or pool, dampen your locks and apply a layer of deep moisturizing conditioner from scalp to ends. 2. Use a moisturizing shampoo. Preferably one with sunscreen, then follow up with moisturizing conditioner. Apply to toweldried hair for approximately 5 to 15 minutes before rinsing. 3. Use a deep conditioner once a week. Apply for 15 to 30 minutes. This will replace vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, which restore the hair to a shiny, soft and flexible state. 4. Avoid products with high alcohol content as they can dry out your hair. Also, avoid putting perfume directly on your hair since its alcohol content can also cause your tresses to look and feel brittle. 5. Limit the time under a dryer. Blot your hair until at least a quarter of the moisture has been removed before applying heat. 6. Use a natural boar bristle hairbrush with a wooden handle. These brushes can reduce static cling. You can also lightly rub a dryer sheet over your hair to reduce static.

Venous health issues are not just about zapping those embarrassing varicose or spider veins because they make us look older than we are. There are also valid health reasons to have a diagnostic ultrasound, especially for competitive athletes. Oftentimes people wait until “irregular” veins are causing real pain to take care of them, but we also recommend that they call a venous health expert any time there is concern about:

• Tired legs • Heavy legs • Burning, itching or tingling skin on the legs • Swelling • Restless legs

SPECIALIZING IN BODY SCULPTING WITH LITTLE TO NO DOWN TIME, PAIN, OR BRUISING.

Many athletes don’t realize their legs were feeling heavy, or even hurting, until after they have been through the screening process and have had treatment. (Most treatments are covered by insurance.) Without heavy legs dragging them down on the golf course, tennis court, dance floor or hiking trail, many weekend warriors are better able to compete at a higher level, in addition to gaining greater enjoyment of life and the activities they love. Taking care of vein health now helps make sure you’ll be on your “A” game in warm weather and beyond, so you keep the competitive edge of having great legs for life!

Financial Spring Cleaning Know what documents to keep and toss

There’s something scary about getting rid of statements and documents. Despite the hassle of filing paperwork, you feel like your finances may cease to exist if there’s nothing printed out to prove it. In today’s digital marketplace, going paperless is a safe and realistic goal, as long as you keep a few things in mind.

What to Keep

QA &

with Pat Alessi

Ask the Skin Care Specialist Benefits of facials Benefits of having a facial go beyond the feeling of being pampered and giving yourself some time of relaxation. Facials improve the look and health of your skin by improving the immune system, aiding in detoxification, reduction of fluid build-up in the body, and contributing to stress relief.

1.

Documents that pertain to assets bought or sold. Keep car titles, land deeds, mutual funds, stocks and bonds. You must be able to prove what you paid in case you want to sell.

2.

Retirement account forms 8606, 5498 and 1099-R. These forms prove what has gone in and out. It’s not necessary to keep the statements.

3.

Legal documents. Examples: marriage and birth certificates, Social Security card and immigration documents.

4.

Tax Returns The IRS recommends keeping returns for seven years.

5.

Loan statements, including your mortgage. Keep the initial document, a record of all payments made and proof of final payment. Once it’s paid off, you can get rid of all the other stuff.

What to Toss

The body’s natural processes can dull facial skin. Your skin constantly sloughs off dead cells, which can clog pores and age your skin. Daily exposure to the environment -- including the sun (even in the winter), chemicals, air pollutants, grease, dirt, smoke, and other elements -- takes a toll on your skin. Facials can help remedy these common skin problems. Exfoliation, with astringents and masks, can reach deep into the epidermis to remove dead skin cells and reveal newer cells underneath. This will help achieve a clearer complexion and natural glow. The warm towel or steam that is applied to the face during a facial not only helps to open pores, but it can also open blood vessels and increase circulation. This brings beneficial nutrients and oxygen to the skin, which in turn encourages new cell growth. The light massage that is used to apply facial products can also increase circulation to the face and neck, as well as stimulate the lymphatic system. The body increases drainage, and helps to reduce any fluid retention in the face which is why, after a facial, the face looks less puffy. It’s important to drink plenty of water after a facial to help flush out toxins that may have been released. Facial massage also aids in the relaxation of the facial muscles, which can slow the onset of wrinkles in the face.

1.

ATM/credit card receipts, bank statements and pay stubs. Keep for one month until your bank statement is reconciled.

2.

Receipts for minor purchases after a couple of months. However, keep receipts that pertain to taxes with your tax return information.

3.

Utility bills and old insurance claims. Bill statements are available online. Once insurance claims are settled and you cash your check, you no longer need your records.

4.

Social Security settled Investment Statements. These are all archived and available upon request. You can also go to www.socialsecurity.gov for an updated social security statement and print out your statement as often as you like.

Remember to shred everything you get rid of and scan a backup copy of what you keep for cloud or external hard drive storage. Also consider setting up a separate email account. That way, online bills won’t get sent to your spam folder.

At minimum, you should receive a facial treatment four times per year, as the seasons change. Regular facials are the key to clear, smooth, soft, and radiant skin year-round.

Still feeling uncertain about transitioning from paper statements? Take baby steps. Start by going paperless with convenience utilities like cell phone bills. Just be careful—going paperless doesn’t mean you can be negligent. There’s no good excuse for bad bookkeeping.

Mis-Diagnosed HIP, Lower BACK & GROIN Pain? The sacroiliac joint is often overlooked by most doctors. The sacroiliac joint or S/I joint is a semi-fixed joint, located approximately at the top of each buttock, between the hip joint and the lower back. It sits between the sacrum, at the base of the spine and the ilium of the pelvis, which are joined by ligaments. It is a strong, weight-bearing synovial joint (A lubricant in most major joints) with irregular elevations and depressions that produce interlocking of the two bones. Humans have a left and right S/I joint that often match individually but are highly variable from person to person. When the S/I joint becomes inflamed or degenerated from an old fall, slip or minor trauma, it is called S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliatiis. The S/I is also susceptible to overuse, especially with women who have given birth. During the birthing process, this joint is exposed to high levels of stress, increasing that areas susceptibility to arthritic changes and arthrosis. When this happens, the joint surface is no longer smooth, causing irritation to the surrounding overlapping tissues and nerves. Weak ligaments in the area may also allow the S/I to “shift” improperly causing undo stress.

The problems and pain associated with S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliitis can include unexplained groin pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, leg inflammation and even sciatic type nerve problems. Because of these symptoms, often times physicians look to the lower back and hips as the main cause and so the patient usually continues to have off/on chronic issues in that area, leading to potentially severe osteoarthritis of the S/I joint. It is important to understand that the S/I joint relies on the health of the surrounding structures to maintain its health. For example; Weak ligaments and tendons in the area can cause mal-alignment of vital musculoskeletal structures, greatly contributing to S/I joint problems. Additionally knee problems, over extended periods of time can contribute to S/I joint issues. What to do? Steroid or cortico-steroid injections should be an absolute last option because of the potential long term negative side effects to the joint and surrounding connective tissue. Many options for treating the S/I joint are available that may even restore full normal function. The goal of these treatments is NOT only pain suppression, but rather to eliminate the cause by correcting mal-aligned structures, improving the health of the joint and reducing the ligament laxity or weakness. Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover this treatment. To see if you qualify, call Total HealthCare Medical Clinics. Norcross 770-416-9995 or Sandy Springs 678-9998531

Finding Your Equilibrium: Outdoor activities for well-being and weight loss What are some of the physical and mental benefits of getting outdoors? Sunlight on the skin begins a process that leads to the creation and activation of vitamin D, which helps fight certain conditions from osteoporosis and cancer to depression and heart disease. Limited sun exposure is a good regimen because light tends to elevate people’s mood. Seasonal affective disorder affects some people during the winter when they don’t get enough sunlight. The “happy” hormone, serotonin, increases when nights are short and days are long. Experts now believe that sunlight has a widespread mood-elevation.

What are some good outdoor activities for someone who is looking to begin a workout regimen? Many items on the “honey do” list such as washing the car and cleaning gutters are good ways to include working out in your weekly schedule. Get moving by adding walking in your daily routine, or take a stroll in the neighborhood after dinner.

What are some fun outdoor alternatives for someone who is accustomed to working out indoors or at the gym? Playtime with kids or friends is a fun outdoor activity. You might begin by introducing some of your childhood favorites such as freeze tag, red light green light, jump rope, hopscotch and four square. Stay active and off the sidelines with outdoor sports such as softball, tennis or basketball. Or spend quiet time maintaining a flower or vegetable garden.

What are the benefits to encouraging children to get outside? Children are able express their creativity with new adventures and games and learn about nature. Children with ADHD seem to focus better after being outdoors.

Are there any benefits to exercising outdoors versus hopping on a treadmill at the gym? A recent study showed an improvement in overall well-being. Many participants shared greater feelings of revitalization, increased energy and decreased tension, anger and depression when exercising outdoors verses exercising indoors. Several participants in the study reported greater enjoyment and satisfaction with outdoor activity, leading many to continue year round outdoor exercise activities.

What are the best outdoor activities for someone who is looking to achieve significant weight loss? With increased activities and healthy eating habits, a person would be able to lose the average 1 to 2 pounds per week. Based on a 150-pound person, one would be able to expend 544 to 306 calories per hour with the following activities: • an afternoon tennis match • freestyle swimming • hiking a nature trail • carrying your own clubs during your golf game

Ways to Help Lumbar Radiculopathy

What is radiculopathy? Radiculopathy is a condition due to a compressed nerve in the spine that can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness along the course of the nerve. Radiculopathy can occur in any part of the spine, but it is most common in the lower back (lumbar radiculopathy) and in the neck (cervical radiculopathy). Radiculopathy can be due to mechanical compression of the nerve by a disc herniation, a bone spur (osteophytes) from osteoarthritis, or from thickening of surrounding ligaments.

How do I know I have radiculopathy? The most common symptoms of radiculopathy are pain, numbness and tingling in the arms or legs. Lumbar radiculopathy that causes pain that radiates down a lower extremity is commonly referred to as sciatica.

How are radiculopathies diagnosed and treated? The diagnosis of radiculopathy begins with a medical history and physical examination by a physician. The patient may then be asked to obtain imaging studies (MRI or CT) to look for a source of the radiculopathy. In some cases, the doctor may order a nerve conduction or electromyography (EMG), which looks at the electrical activity along the nerve to determine if there is damage to the nerve.

Most people can obtain good relief of their symptoms with conservative treatment, including anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and avoiding activity that strains the neck or back. If patients do not improve with the treatments listed above, they may benefit from an epidural steroid injection. These treatments can help to rapidly reduce the inflammation and irritation of the nerve and help reduce the symptoms of radiculopathy. In some cases, the symptoms continue despite all of the above treatment options. If this occurs and the symptoms are severe, a spinal cord stimulator or surgery may be an option. The goal of spinal cord stimulation is to decrease the nerve pain signals that go to the legs or arms by changing the pain sensation to a small non-painful tingling sensation. Midtown Neurology is fully equipped to perform the above procedures and is happy to assist you should you have these symptoms. Aashish Bharara, MD

Getting Fit for Fertility

Melissa Bennett, ND

Are there any dietary changes or adjustments a woman should make to increase her chances of getting pregnant? Why is it so important for a woman to get her body healthy prior to pregnancy? Instead of waiting weeks until the woman knows she is pregnant and then starting with good nutrition, there should be good nutrition from the moment of conception and even months prior to conception. This is the perfect time to evaluate your health status by finding out what could be causing you not to feel 100 percent.

What is one of the most controllable factors in getting fit for fertility? One of the most controllable factors is for the woman to act like she is pregnant even before she gets pregnant. Take a high-grade, multi-nutrient and eat foods with lots of antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E and betacarotene. Try to avoid alcohol and tobacco prior to getting pregnant, and don’t wait until the child is in the womb before incorporating a healthy lifestyle. Give your baby a healthy start from day one.

How does a woman’s weight affect her fertility? An ideal body weight, a healthy weight with good nutrition increases fertility. Too much Adipose (fat) tissue can influence hormonal changes within the body.

Natural Health Atlanta 5755 North Point Parkway, Suite 53, Alpharetta, GA 30022 www.naturalhealthatlanta.com (678) 892-6865 Fax (770) 609-8434 Melissa Bennett is a certified Traditional Naturopath through the American Naturopathic Certification Board. She is also boardcertified in nutritional wellness, and is a member of the American Association of Nutritional Consultants and the American Association of Christian Counselors. As a certified natural health practitioner, she is skilled in the Zollinger method of reflexology and specializes in counseling on an individual basis.

In a word: antioxidants. During the second half of the monthly cycle, the ovary develops what is called a corpus luteum. This corpus luteum creates very high amounts of progesterone that help you become pregnant. Progesterone means “for pregnancy hormone.” To make this increased progesterone, the body needs a lot of antioxidants to keep the tissue healthy, especially beta-carotene. So eat high beta-carotene foods like carrots, yams, pumpkins, winter squash and apricots.

What vitamins and/or supplements should women take in preparation for pregnancy? The key to health is “hydration,” so proper water intake is crucial for health. Also, purchase prenatal vitamins and place a sticker on the bottle that says “pre-conception” vitamins. Make sure your vitamins are from a whole food source and are not compromised by fillers, artificial colors or additives.

Are there any common mistakes that a woman may unknowingly be making that could decrease her fertility? A common mistake is “getting ready” for pregnancy by quickly losing weight or starting an extreme exercise program. Starvation and over exercising can interfere with pregnancy – when the body is under stress, the tissues that control fertility can be adversely affected.

Is there anything a man can do to increase fertility? Men should also take a “preconception” whole food multi-nutrient. Avoid excessive alcohol. Get enough sleep, as sleep deprivation will decrease sperm count. Other factors that decrease sperm count include obesity and hypothyroidism, frequent use of saunas or hot tubs, using your laptop on your lap for long periods of time, prolonged bicycling, over exposure to industrial chemicals, heavy metal exposure and radiation or X–rays.

What are some simple things every couple can do to improve their health prior to pregnancy? As a couple, take preconception multi-nutrients. Cut back on alcohol, and ideally eliminate it all together. Live a moderate, gentle lifestyle of healthy nutrition, adequate sleep and gentle, routine exercise. Preconception is not the time for extremes.

Experience the Power of Whole Body Vibration!

A Natural Approach to Breast Augmentation

First Week Free for New Members

Who is an ideal candidate for natural breast augmentation? An ideal candidate for natural breast augmentation is a woman with fairly decent elasticity of the breast skin. This is a procedure for someone who has lost fullness in her breasts due to aging or breastfeeding and wants to go up in breast size no more than two cup sizes.

• The 10 Minute = 1 Hour Workout! • Helping America Get On & Get Active! • Perfect for All Ages! • The Next Generation in Whole Body Vibration! • New Extended Hours

What are the benefits of natural breast augmentation vs. the silicone route? The advantage of natural breast augmentation is just that - the breasts look natural. There is no cutting anywhere on the breast, and you can shape your breasts the way you want them. This method also gives women more cleavage, fills in the area under the breast and helps with asymmetry and nipple projection. How does natural breast augmentation work?

The surgeon will harvest fat from different areas of the body using advanced liposuction 8:31 AM techniques. The fat is then washed, and plasma rich platelets from the patient are added back into the fat. Next it is injected through two small needle points above and below the areola. Is the augmentation process painful? You feel pressure, but we can give you valium to help with nerves and something to make you feel comfortable during the procedure. The patient may be sore afterward, but she can return to work within one to two days.

Atlantan Recognized for Making a Difference

Sexton began her philanthropic work through her photography hobby.“When I started raising funds to support the fight to end cancer, incorporating those hobbies into my fundraising just seemed like a natural thing for me to do,” she says. She also uses her passion for baking to raise money for local charities such as Meals on Wheels Atlanta. “In addition to their meals service, they support a network of Fulton County neighborhood senior centers. My mom goes to one of them, and it’s made such a difference in her quality of life,” Sexton says.“I also try to support the arts, because I feel like we all need beauty, inspiration and provocation in our lives.”

Announces Inaugural Event 50 Cents. Period., founded in 2010 by Atlantan Lorrie King, helps girls in developing countries who miss school each month because of their periods. Just 50 cents buys a month of sanitary supplies for a needy girl, allowing her to stay in school. This non-profit will host their first-ever fundraiser, the Big Red Ball on March 8 at the Old Courthouse on the Square in Decatur. Beyond reaching out to countries like Nepal, India and Uganda, they also work on a local level. They have begun a Lorrie Kin g visits w program called “Period at Home” in partnership ith Nansu bya with World Relief Atlanta, which supplies newly arrived refugee women and girls with a six-month supply of sanitary products. Sexton was unknowingly nominated for the contest by a friend and became one of five winners chosen from more than 2,200 entries.“My friend nominated me because I’m a caregiver for my partially disabled mother,” explains Sexton, who works for the American Cancer Society.“We flew to New York and received star treatment. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget! Our photos and stories were featured in a recent issue of People Magazine.”

The contest, which was sponsored by BOTOX Cosmetic and People Magazine, was created to recognize women who are making a difference at home, in their community and for themselves.

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

Did You Know? The Southeastern Region of the United States is known as the “Kidney Stone Belt” because of the high incidence of kidney stone disease. One reason people living in the South are at higher risk is the hot climate which causes dehydration. Southern dietary factors also contribute to the “Kidney Stone Belt” phenomenon. Men are more likely to develop kidney stones; the male to female ratio is nearly 4 to 1. Kidney stones are most common between the ages of 20 and 40. Once you have had one stone, you are more likely to develop another. Also, kidney stones tend to run in families. To schedule an appointment within 24 business hours for kidney stone pain, call our Kidney Stone Hotline at 1-855-786-6311 anytime (day or night).

Georgia Urology delivers the most advanced urological care available. As the largest urology practice in the Southeast, our 38 highly-trained and experienced urologists specialize in the medical and surgical management of all genitourinary conditions in men, women, adolescents and children including: •
