This month’s issue is Best Self’s “Beauty Issue,” which means, well, anything. On a practical level, the beauty issue means that you can turn to p. 35 and find tips about preserving smooth skin, maintaining good posture and finding your best hair color. But beauty, of course, can mean so much more than that. Beauty can mean spending more time with your family and friends. Beauty shows up in the hard work people do for charities and organizations all throughout the city. Beauty doesn’t even have to be about us at all – we call art, music and nature “beautiful” every day. When faced with all these options, I can only conclude that beauty is whatever we make it. So this month, think about what makes you feel happy, confident, loved and connected. Expand your definition of beauty to include those things, above and beyond what the commercials tell you. After all, author Sam Levenson had it right when he wrote, “For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.” A monthly facial and a new lipstick certainly never hurt – just don’t stop there when building the beautiful life you deserve.

Volunteering not only feels good, but there are several additional rewards. Volunteers learn new skills, form meaningful relationships, feel connected to the community, resolve conflict better and experience increased empathy. At Camp Horizon, we provide year-round programs to children in foster care from ages 8 to 23. Volunteering with us is a great experience for the kids, but it’s also life changing for our volunteers.

That it’s going to hurt or be expensive. Modern cosmetic dentistry can be done effortlessly, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a beautiful smile. What causes does Atlanta Smiles and Wellness support? I started the Atlanta Smiles Foundation in 2008 to provide pro bono dentistry and facial reconstruction to survivors of domestic abuse.

At Bob Steele Salon, we are really great at helping each individual find the best self that they can be and enhancing their natural beauty through cut, color, extensions and makeup services. What is a common misconception people have about high-end salons? That the stylist is just going to tell you what they think you should look like or feel like, but really what we’re doing is getting to the essence of who you are and helping you become better at that. What is your favorite hairstyle you’ve ever worn? The one I’m representing today! It’s a throwback to many years ago in my early 20s when I did the short pixie. I’m really enjoying it right now – it’s so easy and so fun.

How does volunteering at Camp Horizon help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond? It definitely helps keep me young! Our volunteers range in age from about 18 or 19 all the way up to 70s. We all get to be kids ourselves a little bit, which is really fun. What volunteer opportunites are available at Camp Horizon? Our greatest need is for counselors at summer camp, an intensive one-week program. Volunteers can also help with our spring and fall weekend retreats, our annual family reunion party and monthly activities like rock climbing and roller-skating throughout the year.

The exciting thing I do is roll back the clock a little bit for people and match up the outside with the inside. What is a common misconception about cosmetic surgery? That it’s going to look unnatural. In my practice, my goal is that no one knows my patients have had anything done. They just look at them and say, “Wow, you look fantastic.” What causes does the Maloney Center support? The Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children is our biggest initiative. Cynthia: When I hit 43, it started to sink in that my body was changing. Women come in that are in that situation too, and we let them know that they’re beautiful. Everybody goes through this, and we can relate.
How does joint care help people in their 40s, 50s and beyond feel their best? When someone gets back to running, playing soccer, playing tennis or simply walking upstairs, it gives them their life back. What is your ultimate goal in doing this work? Pain is a big de-motivator and depressor in one’s life. I want to help people get back to the productive lives they want to live. What is a common client response when they see the benefits of your care? Many of the patients that come to us do so as a last resort before an invasive surgery. Once we’ve helped them, they often say things like, “This changed my life,” and “I had forgotten what it’s like to be pain free.”

What role does food play in overall health and fitness? You have to eat good, real foods. I tell people, “Whatever is working for you, go with it. But is it something you can do for the rest of your life?” Can you drink shakes for the rest of your life? I’m going to go with “no.” It’s about a lifestyle and learning to eat in moderation. What is your favorite workout? Any workout I can do in 30 minutes – I’m in and out three times a week and then call it a day.
Does self-esteem affect the brafitting process? Molly: It does. We’ve seen young girls that are concerned with underdeveloped breasts or they’re fuller than most girls in their class. We pride ourselves in building selfesteem. We call it “giving the gift of lift” because we lift your spirits and your breasts. What do you love most about the work you do? Cynthia: We really are a no-judgment zone. We help everybody, whether you’re a transgender man, a woman who’s pregnant or a child that’s developed due to hormones or obesity. We don’t turn you away.

MODA welcomes “students” of every age to join in their new workshops and test their hands at animation, 3D design, LEGO robotics and more. Whether it’s printing real-life versions of Minecraft ice palaces or LEGO electronic circuits, kids ages 8 to 15 can create those and more at current MODA workshops. For $40 on the afternoon of March 21, adults can join in the fun with their children to design and print their own Mockingjay pins from “The Hunger Games” franchise. A Film for Everyone
Dancing Through Time
The Atlanta Film Festival runs from March 20 to 29, screening quality independent films for the 39th year. Many of this year’s directors focus on serious topics, such as in Danielle Beverly’s “Old South,” which explores racial tensions between a white fraternity in Athens, Georgia and a traditionally black neighborhood, or Nathalie Cools’ “Trans: A Documentary about Transboys,” delving into complex issues of gender identity. Still other directors are bringing comedies, musical programming and more to the screen. With a $50 MovieHopper pass, you can attend any of the festival’s regular screenings, or you can purchase $10 general admission tickets for specific shows.
If you haven’t been to the ballet in a while, let this show get you back to the theater. Atlanta Ballet’s “Camino Real,” choreographed by Helen Pickett, makes its world premiere at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on March 20. The show is inspired by Tennessee Williams’ play, and the story comes from the perspective of Kilroy, a patriotic WWII-era character. In 75 minutes, the ballet introduces fictional and historical figures, such as Esmeralda from “Hunchback of Notre Dame” and the infamous 18th century Casanova. Pickett herself shares insight into the story and the characters on the Atlanta Ballet’s website, so you can learn their full backstory before it comes to life on stage.

ntimidation is not a word or a concept that entrepreneur Molly Mathis finds daunting. On the contrary, intimidation is what keeps Mathis in business. Mathis is the mastermind behind Mojo Active Adventures, a boutique adventure travel company that helps women change their feelings of intimidation about fitness, travel, friendship – you name it – to feelings of empowerment. Mojo Active Adventures achieves that empowerment through outdoor excursions and fitness-focused trips for the female adventure seeker. “We take the intimidation factor out of the equation by offering a safe, supportive and fun environment in which to sample new outdoor activities,” Mathis says. Through her business model, explorers embark on personalized trips organized by Mathis herself. “I personally plan each trip to ensure it meets our extremely high standards. By working closely

Each trip aims to take wanderers on explorations they’ve never experienced before. “The caving adventure in Puerto Rico, for example, is ranked among National Geographic’s Top 50 Journeys of a Lifetime. You simply have to take a ride into the rainforest to get to something like that,” Mathis asserts. In essence, it’s that first-time, exhilarating experience trip after trip that helps the Mojo Adventure participants stay excited about fitness. Mathis has her sights set on Iceland for 2016, but next on the horizon for Mojo Active Adventures is helping expand their participants’ fitness opportunities when the trips are over. “We are looking into enhancing some of our partnerships with area retailers and outfitters by offering ‘Mini-Mojo’ events in and around the Atlanta area. If someone learns, for example, that they really enjoy stand-up paddleboarding on a full-length trip, they have a path to explore that further when they get back home.” And that home portion is key since, of course, every workout can’t be a trip through the rainforest. Mathis knows that an exciting, healthy getaway is only the beginning of a lifestyle of fitness, which she herself maintains. “When it comes to working out, I’m always mixing things up to keep it fun and get the best results.” And while she doesn’t stick to a diet regimen, Mathis does say that it’s important to be cognizant of what’s fueling your body. “I do believe in keeping it simple with basic, whole foods. As a trainer, I tell clients that 80 percent of success has to do with what you put in your mouth. Don’t get me wrong, though – I’m all about healthy indulgences too.” When asked how she stays motivated, Mathis explains, “Honestly, it’s a part of who I am. For sure, there are days when I’m feeling less than motivated or struggling to make it happen. However, find activities you love to do, surround yourself with others who share your interests and encourage you, and just make it a non-negotiable part of your day.” Another non-negotiable for Mathis: appreciating how far she’s come and what she’s built. Mathis acknowledges, “Starting this business has honestly been more fun than I could have imagined. 1. Begin by placing the long end of a makeup brush against your nose. Line the brush up with the area that is in between the inside of the tear duct and the eye socket. This is where your brow should start.

3. The last angle and the most important area is your arch. It’s All In Your Head Ellen Langer, a psychologist and current professor of psychology at Harvard University, has conducted a few small-scale studies specifically about the mind’s effects on aging. In one, conducted in 1981, she took eight men in their 70s and set them up to live for just five days in a temporary home. The catch? The home was designed to remind them of 20 years before. Movies, magazines, even their conversation topics were all meant to evoke the past and get the subjects to act like their younger selves. At the end of the week, the men’s bodies had responded as if they truly were younger: they were more coordinated, sat taller and even experienced improved eyesight. When the experiment was recreated in 2010, attempting to bring subjects back to their 1975 selves, the subjects experienced similar changes – one who struggled to dress himself at the beginning of the week was hosting a dinner party on the experiment’s final evening. It’s super simple to create your own dry shampoo at home with these recipes: For brunettes – Mix 1/2 cup of organic cornstarch and two to three tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. The darker your hair, the more cocoa powder you can use.

The American Cancer Society says that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. With conventional digital mammography, the radiologist is viewing all the complexities of the breast in one image. Then, a computer produces a 3D image in one millimeter slices, decreasing tissue overlap. What should I expect during the 3D mammography screening exam? 3D mammography is performed at the same time as the 2D mammogram with the same system. There is no additional compression required and the exam time may be just about the same or shorter than a 2D exam. Is there more radiation dose? With the lower dose 3D mammography, very low X-ray energy is used during the exam, just about the same as a standard 2D digital a o a and ow than a t ad t ona fi mammogram. Who can have a 3D mammogram exam? It is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings. What is the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram? A screening mammogram is your annual mammogram that is done every year. Sometimes the radiologist may ask you to come back for follow-up images, called a diagnostic mammogram, to rule out an unclear area in the breast or if there is a breast complaint that needs to be evaluated. Diagnostic mammogram focuses on the area of abnormality or the area of complaint. It is important to have the original images available if you go to a different facility for your follow-up exam. ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, premature birth affected more than 450,000 babies in 2012. Over the years, this number has steadily increased, leaving more newborns and parents of preemies to face health challenges that require undivided attention, often in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). etween the pressures to perform, keeping up with a packed schedule and the transition to adulthood, many adolescents will experience emotional upheaval that includes anxiety, depression, loneliness and unhappiness. While some of these symptoms can be attributed to environmental factors, these can also be warning signs that something more serious is going on. Depression in teens can look different than in adults. A child with depression may feel sick, resist going to school or express excessive worry. Teens may o d tant t nto fi ht irritable and feel anxious. Depression in adolescence frequently coexists with other disorders such as anxiety, eating disorders or substance abuse and can also lead to increased risk for suicide.
Depression strikes teenagers more often than most people think. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. Each year about 6.7 percent of U.S. adults experience major depressive disorder, and women are 70 percent more likely than men to experience depression during their lifetime. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America reports that half of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The good news is that depression and anxiety, even the most severe cases, can be effectively treated. The earlier that treatment can begin, the o t t h fi t t to tt n appropriate treatment is to visit a doctor or mental health specialist.
What things can I encourage my teen to do to combat normal anxiety and stress? Help your teen begin good habits now that will follow into adulthood with regards to reducing stress. Encourage them to practice yoga, meditate, eat well-balanced meals, get enough sleep, limit caffeine and sugar and exercise every day. Help them develop support systems through clubs and sports teams. Additionally, set a good example yourself by sharing a positive attitude and demonstrating a sense of humor.

n today’s busy world, everyone deals with stress. Family, work, friends, life – these all contribute to the organized chaos we face on a daily basis. And when it comes to coping with those stressors, we all experience some level of anxiety. Maybe we lose some sleep, our minds race with worry, or we don’t finish dinner because our stomachs are in knots. But for some people – approximately 40 million Americans, according to the National Institute of Mental Health – anxiety is more than just temporary, reasonable worry. Sometimes worry spirals into trembling hands, a racing heart, nausea, trouble catching a breath and more. If that sounds like you or someone you know, an anxiety disorder may be the culprit.

probably result from a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological and developmental factors.” That means a solution may not be one simple fix.
A Therapeutic Approach When struggling with anxiety, it’s important first to see your primary care physician to determine if the anxiety is a result of a physical condition such as heart disease, diabetes or even a thyroid problem. Once those possible causes are ruled out, the next common step is therapy, which involves talking with a trained professional to resolve specific problems that trigger anxiety. Dr. Thomas Burns, board-certified clinical psychologist with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, explains that therapy helps you examine fears or cognitive distortions that may be triggering your anxiety. Together with the therapist, you work to resolve or eliminate those thoughts. Hypnosis is another treatment that can help alleviate anxiety. “The reason it works well is because [anxiety issues] are brought on by the subconscious mind,” says Valerie Cobbin, master hypnotherapist with Brighter Tomorrow Hypnotherapy in Atlanta. “I reprogram the subconscious to deal with those issues to eliminate the anxiety.”
Cope with Combinations Medications also can be effective in treating anxiety, particularly when symptoms such as nausea or panic are so bad that you cannot get to the root of the problem. Dr. Dave Davis, medical director of Piedmont Psychiatric Clinic in Atlanta, says, “If [anxiety symptoms] get really bad, I give medicine to decrease symptoms while working on coping skills.” He adds, “You should never just treat with medicine,” instead advising a combination of any necessary medication with other available therapies. Also, O’Brien recommends examining your lifestyle to see if changes are warranted, such as cutting out caffeine and exercising regularly. While diet and exercise improvements alone will not fully address an anxiety disorder, they can give an even better chance for overall success when combined with medication and therapy.

Strong Support Along with effective treatments, people struggling with anxiety need a strong support system. If you’re parenting one of the eight percent of American teens struggling with anxiety, learn how to approach their condition constructively. “Don’t be negative or see anxiety as a weakness,” Burns says, because it truly isn’t. Kaslow clarifies, “It’s a neurochemical issue.” Unfortunately, only 18 percent of anxious teens receive mental health care, but that seems to be changing. Dr. Sambunaris says, “As science has advanced and we better understand these diseases and treatments, parents are getting help for their children more quickly.” This compassionate approach will make you a great support for anyone in your life struggling with anxiety, and if you yourself are looking for that support, don’t stop until you find it. Davis recommends, “When do you feel anxious?” There may be a pattern, and understanding it can help.
Don’t hesitate to get help if anxiety is interfering with your day-to-day life. “A person might seek help at any stage of experiencing anxiety,” O’Brien encourages, and these days, more and more people are doing just that. “Mental illness is slowly shedding its stigma, which means more people are getting the treatment they need,” O’Brien says. Working out with resistance bands is an easy, affordable and effective total body workout. Plus, they are incredibly portable for vacations or business trips! When using resistance bands, remember to move slowly and purposefully through each movement. Focus on the muscle group you are working, and control each movement. It’s almost time to break out those spring clothes! I have a simple exercise that will get you toned and ready for shorts in no time: the walking lunge. It’s my favorite move to target the thighs, butt and core. Let’s start lunging! 1. Stand tall with your feet together, shoulders back and hands by your side or on your hips – whatever makes you feel comfortable. 2.Take one step forward with the right leg, making sure to keep that core tight, and sink down until both knees are at a 90-degree angle. 3. Push off the back leg and bring the feet together. Do the same move with the other leg, moving forward with each lunge. To prevent knee strain or injury, make sure your front knee does not go past your big toe during any lunge. Start slow with 10 to 15 reps, rest and repeat three times. As you get better, challenge yourself by adding hand weights and increasing your reps. You’ll be ready in no time to show off those sexy legs and tight tush.

Jerusalem House offers housing for HIV+ adults, a dedicated space for HIV+ single moms and their children, and “scattered sites” throughout Atlanta so HIV+ individuals can live on their own and still access necessary support services. The organization has provided these crucial housing options since 1988 and is responsible for 60 percent of Atlanta’s dedicated HIV/AIDS housing today. In addition to a safe, quality home, Jerusalem House collaborates with other local organizations to provide medical care, places for kids to learn and play, literacy support and more. Volunteers can join in these efforts by tutoring child residents in the Learning Center or tackling home improvement projects such as gardening or painting.
People living with HIV still need these programs today because, Frew explains, they “still regularly encounter stigma, stereotyping and discrimination at work, at school, in health care settings and elsewhere.” For example, Jeremiah Lawson and Brent Elum, many people assume attendees of last year’s Stars Party that Jerusalem House’s residents are primarily gay men, but in reality, 48 percent are female, 33 percent are dependent children and 65 percent identify as heterosexual. No matter who their residents are, Jerusalem House’s vision is to provide them with a caring home that improves their health and quality of life. To help achieve that, Jerusalem House will hold their annual Stars Party on April 9 at The Atlanta Biltmore Hotel in Midtown, which includes live music, cocktails, a silent auction and more. When it comes to a serious condition like HIV, people need medical and emotional support to survive and thrive, but they also need the basics: housing. According to Charlie Frew, executive director of local nonprofit Jerusalem House, “People who are not stably housed are less likely to receive antiretroviral therapy and are more likely to be hospitalized,” as well as experience higher rates of premature death. Because of these statistics, Jerusalem House is adamant that “housing is health care,” and the organization is founded on that premise.
