from the publisher Celebrating Two Years! Best Self Atlanta magazine is celebrating its 2nd Anniversary! We are so thrilled to be at this amazing milestone and so far it has been quite an exciting ride. We have grown in so many different ways. We launched our website last July and loaded it with informative articles, hundreds of events, volunteer opportunities and advice from the city’s health and beauty professionals on just about every selfimprovement topic you can think of. We are connecting with you through social media in the form of our daily blogs, Facebook and Twitter and finally, we have added our event series which allows you the opportunity to connect face-to-face in a fun, relaxed setting to meet the experts in the know. We‘re also distributing the magazine at 1,500 locations around the city and have added direct mail to over 1,200 medical offices. Even though we’ve been busy bringing you all the resources, tools, and inspiration you need to live your best life…we have also enjoyed the journey! And the journey continues with our exciting upcoming May/Two Year Anniversary issue. We will celebrate Mother’s Day and feature unique gift ideas for Atlanta’s moms. And as a special surprise, there will also be a profile on a local mom and New York Times bestselling author. Continuing our mission to promote good health, we will recognize National Stroke Awareness Month by bringing you information on the causes and treatments for stroke. We continue to celebrate our readers within the Best Self Atlanta community, so make sure to head over to www.bestselfconnect.com today to nominate your unique and special candidate for our Over 40 and Fabulous contest. You have choices for your cosmetic dental work. Choose wisely. Hi, I’m Dr. Debra King and for more than 20 years I have devoted my entire practice to cosmetic dentistry and helping people achieve the smile that they’ve always wanted. Whether at a school function with my kids or out in the community, I am constantly meeting people who tell me they are unhappy with their smile but haven’t addressed it because they are intimidated by cosmetic dentistry. Many are surprised to hear that while I do work with celebrity clients, I also craft custom smiles everyday for fellow parents, professionals and neighbors. The Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry offers a wide range of smile solutions, many with immediate results. If there is something that you have always wanted to change about your smile, this is the time to do it. I would like to personally meet with you and discuss how you can have the smile you have always wanted. You deserve it!

What makes Parc Communities so different from other retirement living options? It’s Parc’s people! While Parc Communities is certainly proud of its beautiful communities, fully-appointed apartment homes and fine dining, it is the people that distinguish Parc from other communities.

ACT ONE It’s a time in her life that she would just as soon forget. But true to character, Jane Fonda is sharing with Atlanta one of the lowest points of her career as an actress. View a rare screening of the 1962 documentary “Jane.” This 53-minute film, by renowned “direct cinema” filmmaker, D. A. Pennebaker, tells the very intimate story of Fonda’s ill-fated Broadway play, “The Fun Couple.” The show opened on Broadway and closed two days later after being written off as a flop. Pennebaker follows a then 25-year-old Fonda and chronicles, boldly, the ups and downs, the disappointment and disenchantment, Fonda’s whole traumatic experience, from start to finish.

What are the benefits of living at Parc Communities? U Friends and neighbors U Stimulating intellectual pursuits U Exciting social activities U Improved wellness, less worry

Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe, best known for her Academy Award nominated performance in the film “Precious,” and currently seen in Showtime’s “The Big C,” joins Jane Fonda onstage for an in-depth discussion of the obstacles faced in pursuit of success, the perseverance required to hone one’s craft and the personal triumphs made possible through involvement in the arts. Moderated by Susan Booth, Alliance Theatre Artistic Director, the inspirational dialogue will include perspectives from the young acting students of the Alliance as well as insight from surprise celebrity guests.

U Fantastic food

G-CAPP is proud to partner with the Alliance Theatre to bring you this extraordinary evening to benefit GCAPP’s statewide focus on empowering our youth. Committed to enriching the lives of adolescents and helping them achieve a healthy, productive future free of early pregnancy, G-CAPP relies on your support to fund its vital work in Georgia. Tickets for The Power of the Arts are $50 for general admission and $125 for VIP admission. VIP ticketholders will receive priority seating and access to a reception with the actors.

Explore new ways to get more out of life Literary Dining One of the best ways to enjoy the warmer weather is to get outside with a good book! One that combines a great story line with good food comes from chef turned author Gabrielle Hamilton. Don’t let the title of her new book Blood, Bones & Butter The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef fool you. Although it may sound like a gory tale of mayhem in the kitchen, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. I can usually tell just by reading the first line of a book whether or not it will draw me in, and this book definitely piqued my interest as soon as I got to page one and read “We threw a party!” I was hooked. From beginning to end, you get a true sense of the character’s unique childhood and love she has for her family and for food. Hamilton will be making a stop in Atlanta this month at Restaurant Eugene on April 13 to discuss her book. What better way to enjoy this tasty tale than to dine with the author herself? The evening begins with a cocktail and hors d’œuvre reception, followed by a delicious meal and of course a copy of the book. Details: For reservations call Restaurant Eugene, (404) 355-0321, 2277 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA 30309

If you plan on tuning in as Prince William and Kate Middleton tie the knot on April 29, then why not do it in style? Witness one of the most talked about weddings of the year under the comfort of the grand tent overlooking the new Legacy Fountain as Piedmont Park Conservancy presents The Royal Wedding at Piedmont Park. The affair will feature live coverage of the royal nuptials as well as drinks and light bites. If you are planning a wedding yourself, displays from Atlanta’s top wedding and event vendors will be on hand as well. Details: $30 per ticket, www.piedmontpark.org, (404) 875-7275

Adventure On Horseback Whether you’re an experienced equestrian or an aspiring rider, you don’t have to travel far from the city to find a serene horse haven. Located in the secluded countryside just 10 minutes south of Atlanta is Flying Change’s 15-acre horse farm called Fruition Farm where you can experience the thrill of horseback riding in a private lesson or group setting. For a special outing, come for Tea on Tuesdays which includes a 60 minute group ride, followed by social time and a catered lunch at the Farmhouse. Q

Can stress in my life affect my heart?

Stress affects us because our brain and body are connected. Our body’s reaction to a perceived, or real, stressor activates survival mechanisms that can protect us if we are directly under threat, such as if someone is trying to attack us. But that reaction can also have bad effects on our body if the stress is a routine part of every day. Stress-related hormones can have serious effects not only on the arteries, but also on the brain and immune system. Simple things like exercise (a major stress buster), getting enough sleep, and setting realistic goals, can help you manage stress.

Q

Randy Martin, MD Cardiologist Piedmont Heart Institute

How does a Hospitalist program work?

When a patient requires hospitalization for their medical problems, they will likely encounter a hospitalist, a specialist who manages various acute medical illnesses in the hospital environment. With this program, a hospitalist communicates with your primary physician, but handles your care during time spent in the hospital. This allows patients to receive optimal medical care from a specialist, as well as, care in a more timely fashion should issues emerge. The medical community has embraced a shift to hospital medicine to address the abundant needs of patients.

Is there any non-surgical treatment to get eyelid tightening and lift?

Yes. Fractionated CO2, especially DOT Laser Treatment is a technology where the entire face, eyes, neck, chest, hands or any skin area can be treated and get incredible tightening and lift in just one treatment. Eyelids seem to be the first area where my patients notice instant tightening and are absolutely thrilled with the results. This treatment offers impressive and long-lasting results with just 3-5 days of mild redness and flaking of the skin.

Typical allergy symptoms include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, runny nose, as well as coughing, wheezing and other breathing difficulties. If you are suffering from these problems despite use of medications then it may be time to see an allergy specialist. Allergies can be controlled and even eliminated with a combination of actions and treatment, including: avoidance of allergic triggers, medications or allergy shots or immunotherapy. People often feel they have to suffer with allergies and their complications and do not realize allergies can be treated and controlled.

Q

How do I know when I need to see an allergy doctor?

When do you need a sleep doctor?

Someone who sleeps enough hours per night, but feels sleepy all the time, may have a problem with sleep apnea (frequent interruptions of sleep). Narcolepsy may be the problem if someone falls asleep regardless of how much quality sleep he or she gets. Someone who can’t sleep may have insomnia. All three of these are common reasons people need to see a sleep doctor. Other, less common reasons are abnormal experiences and behaviors during sleep, such as nightmares, seizures or violence.

Ask Aly your true beauty questions

Q: What is the simplest way to freshen up my makeup for spring?

A: Spring is the time of year when we

embrace brighter and fresher colors. With the sun shining and the weather warming up, how can anyone resist? The easiest solution: add a slightly brighter blush color to the apples of your cheeks and a complimentary gloss or lip tint on your lips. Keeping your eyes neutral and applying a new lip color and/or blush is the easiest way to incorporate any seasons’ new trend.

Apply a neutral blush color (one you would wear everyday that matches your skin tone) from the apple of the cheek to the hairline and blend softly (we like the A Design Flat Top Kabuki as the perfect blending tool). Next, smile in the mirror and gently apply a pink or coral to the apple area only (soft-handed application please). Blend well. My pick this spring: Pink Petal and Blushing Blush $15 at Authentic Beauty.

The best shoe in the store is the show that fits your foot and your needs the best.

Choose a corresponding lip gloss or sheer lip color. This season we are seeing beautiful shades of honeysuckle pink and vivid oranges. A great strategy for wearing these colors is to use a lip pencil in the shade of your choice and apply over the entire lip. This is not only a great way to add more color to the lip but will increase the wearability of the gloss. Next, add your fresh colored gloss. If you only want a hint of color use only the gloss and skip the pencil. My pick this spring: Love Potion #9 gloss, Ginger lip pencil and Girls Night Out gloss.

GET YOUR BODY

In Gear

From man cave to the beach – take action to look and feel your best this summer!

Compiled by Best Self staff

You’ve survived the winter and now that the warmer weather is here, you may have emerged with some extra baggage. Whether you need to have some grooming, to shed some extra weight or just an overall health check up, feeling good about yourself is one of the first steps to having fun in the great outdoors. Here are a few steps to get you going in the right direction.

STEP ONE: Get Your Head-to-Toe Check-Up No matter what your age, your health is important and staying informed is the best way to keep yourself healthy and happy. Whether you are a fitness fanatic or a couch potato, you should continue to be up-to-date on all the latest news and information involving your well-being.

Heart You want to enjoy yourself whether it’s on land or by sea this summer, so first thing to check on is your heart. One of the most important organs in your body, your heart is responsible for carrying out a variety of life maintaining functions. So why aren’t we taking better care of it? According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 81,100,000 American adults (more than one in three) have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. The good news is that unlike other diseases that progress regardless of what action is taken, heart disease can be slowed and even stopped over time, which makes prevention and early detection so important. “Optimal blood pressure is 120/80,” says Scott M. Leibowitz, MD, with The Piedmont Heart Institute Physicians group, “Beginning at age 30, men should have their blood pressure and cholesterol checked annually to ensure both are well managed.” Everything from your age, medical history and family history can all be factors in how healthy your heart is. The first thing to be aware of is your numbers. Make an appointment with your family doctor and get a complete physical done so you can become familiar with your blood pressure, BMI (Body Mass Index), cholesterol, triglycerides and fasting blood sugar. Another test to have done is Cardiac CRP, recommends Edward Espinosa MD, with Buckhead Concierge Internal Medicine. This is one of several blood tests that measures the level of inflammatory process that may be taking place within the vessels supplying blood to the heart muscle. “We now know that inflammation in these vessels plays a key role in the development of coronary artery disease, explains Espinosa, “Recent studies suggest that when Cardiac CRP is elevated, cholesterol-lowering medications may protect patients from developing coronary artery disease even if their cholesterol levels are within normal range.”

Prostate The prostate is a kiwi-sized gland that surrounds a man’s urethra, just below the bladder. There are three main disorders that can affect the prostate: inflammation of the prostate, enlargement of the prostate and prostate cancer. Enlargement of the prostate is a benign condition that often occurs in older men. This enlargement pushes on the bladder, making urination difficult. Inflammation of the prostate, prostatitis, can be a result of general systemic inflammation due to poor diet and sedentary lifestyle, or it can be the result of a bacterial infection. Prostatitis is a painful but treatable condition, and roughly 8% of visits to urologists are due to this condition. Prostate cancer is the condition many medical professionals are concerned about because there may be no obvious symptoms, and as many as 1 in 6 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives. “Screening men for prostate cancer saves lives," says James Benton, MD with the Radiotherapy Centers of Georgia. "A recent study from Europe demonstrated a 20% decline in deaths from prostate cancer as a result of screening.” Men over the age of 40 who have a history of prostate cancer in the family or who are of African descent should get their prostate checked annually. All men over the age of 50 should go in for annual checkups. “Over 200,000 men were diagnosed (with prostate cancer) in the United States in 2010,” explains Rajesh G. Laungani, MD chairman of the Prostate Cancer Center

at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, “However, prostate cancer survival rates in the US are strongly influenced by widespread screening with Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test.” One test offered by Lifetest of Atlanta is called Virtual Colonography, which involves shorter examination time, is less invasive and requires no anesthesia. While there are many advantages to this test, make sure to consult with your doctor to find out if it's right for you.

Hormones/HGH Hormones are the chemical messengers secreted by our glands into our bloodstream. Whether these chemical signals are high or low will cause different things to happen in a man’s body. The hormones that are of particular interest to men are testosterone and human growth hormone (HGH). Testosterone is the male sexual hormone. Human growth hormone is the hormone that helps the body to build bones and muscles. Low levels of testosterone often leave a man feeling tired, devoid of interest in sex, and is a risk factor for depression and heart disease. HGH production peaks relatively early in a man’s life, around age 30, and then drops over time. As a man ages, both HGH and testosterone drop, which correlates with loss of bone and muscle mass, decreased sexual activity, and increased body fat.

In addition to eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, some doctors and patients have turned to supplementation of these hormones to get back to optimum levels. “Ask your physician to check your testosterone level if you are experiencing lower than normal mood, sex drive, or energy,” recommends Laura Beaty, MD of Alliance Primary Care. Testosterone can be supplemented “by using a gel, patch, injections, or implantable pellets,” according to Dr. Beaty. Human growth hormone therapies can be obtained at specialized clinics like Atlanta Wellness and Aesthetics. HGH therapy is usually in the form of an injection, which the patient can be trained to do at home. Take Action: Make an appointment with your family physician and get that physical done that you’ve been putting off. Knowing your numbers is half the battle.

recommended for all ages. Rigorous exercise means breaking a sweat and breathing heavily.” There are plenty of options out there from team sports to a variety of gyms and personal trainers to choose from. First figure out your fitness level and then pick something you know you’ll enjoy. “One of the most effective and time efficient ways to exercise is through interval training,” recommends Darren Triplett, MS, Senior Health Partner at Emory/Georgia Tech Center for Health Discovery and Well Being. “Several studies have investigated one interval training method in particular and found it to be very effective across a wide variety of groups, ranging from healthy adults to those with heart disease, in improving cardiovascular fitness. In addition, by raising the exercise intensity several times over the course of a workout, an individual will burn more calories, which can help in losing or maintaining current weight.”

STEP TWO: Getting Active & Staying Active

Sports Injuries

Once you get your tests done, it’s time to get moving. “The rule of thumb with exercise is that some is better than none, and more is better than some,” says Scott Leibowitz, MD of The Piedmont Heart Institute Physicians group. “Ideally, rigorous exercise four to five times per week for 30 to 60 minutes is

Many active men play sports. Sports like basketball, softball, skiing, mountain biking, and football are a great way to get some exercise, relieve stress, and have lots of fun alone or with friends. STEP THREE: Diet & Nutrition

years of sports play or a new injury, it is critical to properly care for the injury to avoid making it worse. According to a study done by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, baby boomers suffering from sports injuries increased by 33% from 1991 to 1998. In 2006, over a half-million people were treated just for basketball-related injuries as reported by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. One of the most common injuries are stress fractures and are seen in almost any sport and any skill level and are caused by repetitive stress and strain on a particular bone that results in the breakdown of the bony architecture explains Jeffrey Kovacic, MD at the Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Center. “Prevention is an athlete’s best defense against stress fractures. Training errors are a common cause of these injuries,” says Kovacic. “Pain that seems to come on “unprovoked” and persists should alert the athlete that overuse may be taking place and more rest may be needed. If symptoms fail to resolve with activity modification, a visit to a medical doctor would be in order.”

Adequate nutrition and a balanced diet are the cornerstones to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. For some, losing weight may just mean a slight adjustment to their diet while others may want a faster approach. Start by assessing how much weight you want to shed and taking a serious look at what you eat every day. “Consuming foods that have a minimal impact on your blood glucose level is beneficial,” says Dr. Espinosa. “We use the term low glycemic index to refer to foods that do not cause a surge of sugar to your system.

The treatment for sports injuries varies widely depending on what kind of injury you suffer. Broken bones need to be set properly and put into a cast. A sprained ankle should be treated with the RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Some of the most difficult to treat injuries involve the soft tissues around joints. One of the newer treatments for this type of injury is laser therapy. “Laser therapy is proven to biostimulate tissue repair and growth,” explains Gary S. Martin, DC. “The laser accelerates wound healing and decreases inflammation, pain, and scar tissue formation.” Laser therapy has the advantage that it is both non-invasive and non-addictive. Take Action: Get out there and get active. Find an activity that matches your personal level of fitness – whether it’s walking in the park or training with a boot camp.

Removing unwanted hair is one thing, but to begin losing it is something that can be cause for concern or even embarrassment. Androgenetic alopecia, or common male pattern baldness (MPB) accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of 35 two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss, and by the age of

Take Action: Whether you go to an expert or assess the contents of your refrigerator yourself, make sure to pay attention to what you’re putting in your body.

Below are samples of foods that have a low glycemic index (GI) and provide key nutrients such as calcium, fiber and vitamins A, C, and E.

Feeling good about yourself on the inside as well as your outward appearance can have a huge effect on your mental attitude. For many men taking care of their hair – whether it’s styling it, removing it, or replacing it – is just as important as their health and diet. “Hair plays a huge role in the job market, whether you are looking for a new job or just maintaining the one you have,” says Richie Arpino, owner of Richie Arpino Salon. “A clean, fresh cut will keep you on your cutting edge.”

By choosing foods with a low glycemic index you can reduce your risk for developing coronary heart disease.” If you find you need some guidance in this area, there are classes and experts you can consult to help you get on the right path. Luckily, you don’t have to remain bare for long. Advances in science have lead to a wide variety of solutions to MPB where everything from drugs to surgical hair restoration to hair replacement treatments and transplants are available. Those looking to go the more natural or holistic way should look into dietary supplements or herbs that are known to strengthen hair follicles and increase scalp circulation. A common ingredient found in products that promote hair health is silica. Silica is necessary for the rebuilding of all connective tissue, including hair, skin and nails. Products that contain a large amount of silica include, but are not limited to Diatomaceous Earth and Horsetail. With all the choices out there it’s prudent to do your research and find the one that you are most comfortable with.

During a time when Americans work 40 to 50 hours a week, social networking has become the new phone call, and texting makes an individual accessible at all hours, it is easy to become wrapped up in the daily grind. However, there is a growing movement of individuals who see the light at the end of the tunnel, and strive to create more out of their work week than just collecting a paycheck. The images of power suits and a corner office no longer define our working world. Some individuals are opting for creative stimulation, a flexible work schedule and a job that makes them happy, as opposed to substantial financial or promotional gain. And the numbers don’t lie. A 2006 study by the Department of Labor revealed workers between ages 18 and 35 change jobs an average of 10 times. The 2010 U.S. Census revealed that 10.3 million of us work as independent contractors, 10.1 million individuals are self-employed, and 5.9 million people work from the comfort of their homes, as compared to the 1990 Census, where 4.1 million worked from home and 8.7 million were self-employed. It seems as though the daily grind is making a transition from cubicledriven to something that resembles professional freedom: creating your own success.

Why Make a Change? Christopher Bennett, owner and creator of Ignite Your Life, notes if you’re not doing something you love, you begin to die internally. “I really think a lot of depression we hear about is not so much because we are depressed psychologically, we are depressed spiritually,” he says. “If one is not true to themselves, they begin to lose themselves.” Bennett, who incorporated Ignite Your Life last year and has been coaching people to find their true passion for the last 10 years, knows what it is like to make a drastic career change. “I used to feel energized, engaged and excited about my corporate position, and as that energy began to fade, it became very clear that my inner happiness was definitely more important than continuing on the corporate path, regardless of financial gain or stability.” Through Ignite Your Life, Bennett now provides one-on-one coaching to individuals and provides key note speaking and workshops on the integration of one’s personal journey as it relates to how they are expressing themselves in life. Bennett

says the first step to making a career or life change is to understand what has meaning and what are just unmet needs. “Ventures to fulfill unmet needs are those ventures that fail. It is important to understand what do I value and are the values I’m putting forth really just unmet needs,” Bennett says. “When you go to do something as bold as going out on your own be very clear of what is driving you and why. Make sure there is a truth to what you are going after.” Farra Allen, creator of Life Works School of Coaching, says a new definition of success is when people have an inner experience where they are connected to their purpose and their passion. “They begin to feel good about themselves and they focus more on contributing to others,” he says. “They move from a need base, where they are fulfilling their own needs, to a give base, where they look to contribute with no attachment and actually begin to feel the act of giving.” Allen goes on to explain, “So much of our success is predicated on what one gets. Did they get the raise? Did they get the promotion?” Allen says. “What we focus on is having people connect deep inside themselves. Once one starts to experience inner fulfillment, people start to feel special, but they don’t need anything coming from the outside to validate. You start to attract more good things in life.”

Creating Your Own Success For many people out there, they began their career in one direction but life changes have led them on a very different path. “Some people just want more satisfaction in their everyday lives,” Allen says. “Listen to one’s calling. We’re all here for a certain reason, and if you listen, you can get in touch with what that is. Formulate that. Design your business around that. Incorporate that into your everyday walk of life. Once you come to own that, once you start to express that in the world, one starts to experience fulfillment inside. That’s priceless.”

A RELAXING RETREAT Tetia McMichael lives and works in a location where many would love to visit, and others would covet to reside: the Smoky Mountains. As the creator and owner of Lakeview at Fontana, a resort and spa right outside Bryson City, N.C., McMichael handles all program details, from yoga to an afternoon wine and cheese tradition and works hands-on with the staff and guests. Her flexible schedule also allows McMichael to spend “as much time outside as possible.” “I live on the property, so it’s only a short walk down a wooded drive to the resort,” McMichael says. “Everyday I’m checking in with our staff, getting to know our guests over an afternoon glass of wine, finding new ways for making Lakeview even more of a paradise than it already is…that’s the best workday I can possibly imagine.” McMichael stumbled on the 1950’s resort more than 15 years ago, and what started out as a renovation project, turned into a fulltime resort spa. “The property was falling apart, but there was this magic to it.” Before making the jump into a full-time resort owner, McMichael worked at an advertising agency in Missouri as a graphic designer, but says she knew a desk job did not suit her well. “I was disappointed by everyone’s dissatisfaction in their jobs,” she says. “I felt suffocated being inside all day, with little time to take a walk outside or even move around the office. Here, our doors and windows are wide open…and I get to spend a lot of time outside every day, drinking in this truly gorgeous location.” And McMichael, who has never had a doubt that owning the resort was the right path for her, says that she is now in her element when hosting guests, maintaining the resort and just being on the property. To others looking to make a change, she offers this advice: “Life’s too short to be unhappy,” she says. “Knowing that you’re unhappy and wanting your life to be different is just the beginning. The idea of actually making the change can be overwhelming. But you don’t have to make this radical shift and uproot your life all at once. I’m a firm believer in posting intentions and making them known. It’s worked very well for me. Jump in and don’t look back!”

Meet Your NEW THERAPIST A CHANGE OF HEART Others have used personal struggles to create a career change. At the age of 55, Nick Lore of Berkeley Lake, a father of three, received the shock of his life when he was diagnosed with a rare form of prostate cancer. Two years into treatment, it looked as though Lore was not going to make it. Lore’s response? To head out on the road with his four-year-old son, Andrew.“I thought, if I’m going to die, I’m going to spend time with my son,” Lore says.“To make sure he understands what life is all about.”

Flying Change partners horses in therapy and personal growth to help you ¿nd new solutions to life challenges. Experience how horses foster powerful changes in your life for issues including:

The former mortgage banker and Wall Street executive hit the road for fifteen months, taking off for three or four days at a time, with Andrew by his side. Lore’s wife, Mandy, would join the crew on longer trips.“I learned in 15 months the joy of making time,” Lore says.“We rode the rails, we went to the ocean. We went to the top of mountains. It was all pretty inexpensive. The very simple things in life are so wonderful.” Lore was contacted about his journey by Les Hewitt, who coauthored The Power of Focus with Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen of Chicken Soup for the Soul. After a review of his journal, Lore was told he was “a good editor away from a good book.” A year of searching for a publisher resulted in the publication of Lore’s book Roll the Windows Down, It’s Raining, and is now in its third printing.

DEPRESSION & GRIEF ADDICTION & EATING DISORDERS RELATIONSHIP CHALLENGES AND MORE... Call today to begin a relationship with horses that will enormously impact your life!

The now-author, who is nine years in remission, says every time he thinks the hype is over, someone calls for him to be a group speaker or do a signing.“On a weekly basis, locally, people come up to me and say they are changing their life because of this book,” Lore says. As for the business world, Lore still holds a positive view of corporations.“I got cancer because I worked 70 hours a week, I didn’t exercise, I didn’t get enough rest. My exercise was running through airports,” he says.“That wasn’t my company’s fault, that was my fault. I have slowed down, but I only know I’m old when I look in the mirror. Old is relative.” Lore now works a non-profit he started called “Here’s Help”, an entity that assists individuals who are having trouble keeping their mortgages. He also runs a consulting business for banks. “It’s so important that people evaluate what is their God-given talent. Don’t worry about money, the money will come,” Lore says.“Find what you have a passion for. Find what you are good at…Find what suits you to work. Then contentment will follow.” A total career change is not the only way to incorporate your passions into your work life. Do what is best for you.

PAINTING A PICTURE Those looking to find passion in their jobs are coming out in mass. Pat Fiorello left the confines of an office job and steady salary to create, as she says, “a world of beauty, love and inspiration.” With an MBA from Harvard, Fiorello set out at an early age to take on the corporate world, working first for Nabisco as the Vice President of Marketing for 15 years, and moving on to Coca-Cola in Atlanta, where she spent another five years in the same position. As an intelligent and talented businesswoman, Fiorello enjoyed assisting with the growth of Coca-Cola’s franchise. However, around age 40, something began to change. Fiorello began to ask herself, “Do I want to keep doing this? Is there something out there that would be more satisfying?” After all, with so much experience behind her, five years at Coca-Cola meant five years of meetings, checking a constant flow of voicemail and email, and answering urgent pages. “You never really got turned off from it,” Fiorello says. “There were a lot of ‘have to’s.’ You have to go to this meeting. You have to fit this in your schedule. It was high stress and it was fun in some ways, but at the end of the day, I didn’t feel like I was doing what made me excited. I wanted more control over what I was doing with my life. Something that lined up with my purpose.”

Fast forward to today, Fiorello continues to strive to fulfill her purpose as a creator of beauty and inspiration. In 2003, she created Fiorello Art & Design, where she manages her website, sells her watercolor and oil paintings, works with various galleries around town and teaches workshops across the globe, from Tuscany and Monet’s Garden in France to the Caribbean. Fiorello, who reconnected with painting as an adult, also teaches a course for aspiring artists, old and young, called Art for Non-Artists. “You just come to a point where you reflect on what you’re doing, and you don’t ask yourself ‘can I do something,’ but ‘why am I doing this?” she says. “You’ve got one life and it’s a short life. There’s a lot of pressure to do what people expect. But now, with a solid plan, you can really create the life you want.”

A FAMILY TRADITION

Photo courtesy of Creatively Classic Activities and Books (CCA & B)

Carol Aebersold of Atlanta grew up with an elf on her shelf. And not just any elf: Aebersold grew up with one of Santa’s elves. As a Christmas tradition in her family, she spent her holidays with the ever-watchful eye of Santa’s little helper, making sure to be extra good so Santa would bring gifts. When Aebersold married, she took the elf doll with her and introduced the tradition to her three children. “It was so much fun,” daughter Chanda Bell says.“My sister, brother and I created memories that will last a lifetime. I remember talking to the elf as a child and apologizing for bad behavior before it got back to Santa. I remember telling the elf what I wanted for Christmas.” This Christmas tradition became an international phenomenon in September 2005, as Aebersold and Bell introduced The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition to the world, printed in its first book edition. “One day, we were sitting at my kitchen table, and I was feeling the effects of my empty nest and wondering what to do with my time,” Aebersold says.“Chanda was sitting across from me, and my elf was still on the shelf in the kitchen. Chanda just perked up and said we should write about the tradition, and that’s where it started.” An agent joined the team, and after some push back from big publication companies, Aebersold and Bell decided to take matters into their own hands.“Our agent suggested we selfpublish, so with complete ignorance and enthusiasm, we did,” Aebersold says.

Thus enters Creatively Classic Activities and Books (CCA & B), Aebersold and Bell’s publishing company. Bell acts as CEO, working with budgets, running employee meetings, and overseeing product development and their product line. Editor-in-Chief Aebersold reviews press releases, assists with projects, and works with the submissions department. Aebersold and Bell offer the following for those looking to take on their own business ventures: “You have to truly believe in your dream,” Aebersold says.“One has to be extremely flexible. Just because you’ve decided this is the path to take, there are many ways to arrive at the same goal.” “No one is going to believe in your goal as much as you do,” Bell adds.“What path you choose is ultimately up to you. The biggest mistake is trying to tackle the whole world at one time. For starting a business, grow where you’re planted. Take one step at a time.”

THE CLEAN-UP ACT Fairburn entrepreneur Marie C. Gelin, creator of Stinky Boyz natural hygiene products for boys and young men, used her financial situation to “reinvent herself” and create a successful career. In 2007, as many struggled with an ailing economy, Gelin saw her match-making and real estate businesses falter. Gelin, who had watched her sister struggle to make her young boys shower, took a simple idea of creating sports-shaped soaps, and turned it into a hygiene phenomenon with active kids. “This was an untouched and overlooked market, and boys needed something to call their own,” she says. “We’re now creating great hygiene habits at a young age.” In 2008, a partner joined the team and provided the financial backing Gelin needed to jump-start her idea. “I am a spiritual person. If you think big, big things will happen,” she says. “To see a stranger come invest in me, it was a miracle. Sometimes you have to go down to come back up. To see this product come to life from just a

drawing, that can’t be anything but having faith in yourself and your Heavenly Father.” Stinky Boyz, which includes a line of soccer, baseball, basketball and football-shaped shampoos with conditioner, is set to have a deodorant come out this spring. But Gelin isn’t stopping there. “It’s really making a difference, and I love to hear stories from parents,” Gelin says. “Stinky Girlz will be out in 2012!”

come together so seamlessly, it makes you wonder why

they haven’t been together all along. Such is the partnership between the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Mitchell Anderson’s eatery MetroFresh, which opened its second location at the garden in the beginning of March.

New Successes During his nearly 20-year acting career, Anderson appeared on popular TV shows such as Party of Five, Doogie Howser M.D. and films such as Jaws: The Revenge and SpaceCamp (just to name a few). When he decided to leave Los Angeles and make Atlanta his home, he also decided to leave acting behind for a while and concentrate on his new passion: cooking. Anderson found himself under the tutelage of Chef Jennifer Levison, and after a stint in her kitchen, he decided to strike out on his own and make the dream of owning his own restaurant a reality. Soon Anderson’s venture really took off and he found himself as busy as ever. “I love (owning a restaurant), and part of my desire to change careers was to have something to do every day. Be careful what you wish for!”

The Green Beginning At first glance you might not see how a restaurant and a garden could have similar aims. However, when you hear it from Anderson, you start to see it unfold. “Getting this opportunity to partner with the garden exactly fits what MetroFresh’s mission is,” he explains. “We said, ‘let us be a permanent exhibit.’ We’ll be the part of your day where you get to taste what’s in the garden.” When you come down to it, both establishments aim to create a healthy experience for patrons through all five senses with MetroFresh being the taste portion of your visit. “We want to not just be a place to get some food, but also a place to interact and really be part of your whole experience at the garden.” In addition to the fresh, ever-changing menu that is part of the allure of the restaurant, the new location will also have an interactive element for kids. Challenged with creating a prepackaged snack, a requirement made by the health department, Anderson looked www.bestselfconnect.com

for a way to make those snacks healthy. The solution was a GORP (also known as trail mix) station containing a row of canisters that hold different varieties of nuts and fruit. The easy-to-use system allows kids to make their own healthy bag of snacks to carry around with them. “The station is also informative,” Anderson says, “The wall behind the station will have fun facts about what the kids are eating so it’s engaging as well.”

A Good Foundation

bringing people together.” And come together they do. Whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there is always a sizable crowd at MetroFresh all waiting to try whatever new dishes may be on the menu. Anderson credits his mentor Chef Jenny Levison for helping him learn more about the restaurant business. “Souper Jenny taught me to treat the business as you would your home. You invite people in and want them to feel welcome,” he explains, “She also taught me to keep it local and personal – and to have a sense of humor.”

This kind of attention to detail is just part of the reason why MetroFresh has enjoyed a successful five-year run and is still going strong. Another important factor is the passion that Anderson brings to everything he does and a vision to continuously create a healthy oasis for his patrons. “(MetroFresh) is a very communitydriven restaurant,” says Anderson, “We have people that come to eat at MetroFresh five days a week, and they are part of our family. I always loved food and what food does – namely

From the Kitchen to the Home Staying healthy in both his professional life and his personal life is something that Anderson strives for. “When I was acting, I worked out five days a week, because I had a lot of free time between auditions,” explains Anderson, whose exercise regime today doesn’t really consist of rigorous time spent at the gym, but instead around the kitchen lifting heavy pots of soup and crates of fresh vegetables and running around the city to find the freshest ingredients for his dishes. Anderson credits eating a healthy diet as part of his secret for staying fit. “I eat right and stay active. I am not able to go to the gym but I am active every day. I also think positivity is key to a healthy life,” he says. One of the ways Anderson stays active is involving himself in charity work. Last year he participated in the Celebrity Dance Challenge Dance for Self-Esteem with EDIN (The Eating Disorders Information Network). “One of my resolutions is to make the time to do something non-work related,” he explains. “But I still love what I do! My favorite part of my job is definitely the people who walk through the door. We are lucky to have great energy coming our way every single day.”

Mitchell Anderson dishes on healthy living Have you always been a healthy eater and conscious of your diet?

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

I have always enjoyed good food. Even as a child we ate really great fresh food – much of which literally came from farm stands on the side of the road.

I think my business for sure, but more than that, I am most proud that I have created a loving home with my partner of 14 years. I always say that if I were to die today, my friends and family can rest assured that during my life I knew love, joy, and kindness.

How long have you lived in Atlanta and what is your opinion on its restaurant scene?

What is your favorite dish to cook?

I’ve lived in Atlanta officially for 10 years and unofficially for almost 15. I think the restaurants here are great. There’s always something new and exciting, and the old favorites are great.

I love cooking Thai foods. Last night I made my favorite seared salmon with a great stir fry, Thai Chili sauce with coconut! I even put a little avocado in it.

How do you balance your busy schedule?

What do you do on your days off?

Basically, I don’t! And I wish I could. The restaurant keeps me very busy and it always seems like there’s one more thing to do. I love it, and part of my desire to change careers was to have something to do every day. Be careful what you wish for!

What is your recipe for staying active, involved and energetic? I really do have a lot of energy for someone of my advanced age (49). I think I’m just lucky in a way, but I try to get enough sleep, eat right, and worry about only the things I can control. I do get overwhelmed and stressed, but I try as hard as I can to work step by step. My first business advisor, Allen Jones, told me to do one task, then another, then another, and surprise, suddenly you’re done.

I usually go to Lake Hartwell with Richie and our dog Schotzi. Or I read the New York Times and lie on the couch.

Are you officially done with acting or are there any projects you can see yourself doing in the future? I won’t audition ever again. If something came up and I could work it into my schedule I would consider it. I love acting and I don’t think you ever really lose the love of it. I get excited when I see something really good – that’s the only time I miss it.

What inspires you? Joy and kindness.

Mis-Diagnosed HIP, Lower BACK & GROIN Pain? The sacroiliac joint is often overlooked by most doctors. The sacroiliac joint or S/I joint is a semi-fixed joint, located approximately at the top of each buttock, between the hip joint and the lower back. It sits between the sacrum, at the base of the spine and the ilium of the pelvis, which are joined by ligaments. It is a strong, weight-bearing synovial joint (A lubricant in most major joints) with irregular elevations and depressions that produce interlocking of the two bones. Humans have a left and right S/I joint that often match individually but are highly variable from person to person. When the S/I joint becomes inflamed or degenerated from an old fall, slip or minor trauma, it is called S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliatiis. The S/I is also susceptible to overuse, especially with women who have given birth. During the birthing process, this joint is exposed to high levels of stress, increasing that areas susceptibility to arthritic changes and arthrosis. When this happens, the joint surface is no longer smooth, causing irritation to the surrounding overlapping tissues and nerves. Weak ligaments in the area may also allow the S/I to “shift” improperly causing undo stress.

The problems and pain associated with S/I joint syndrome or sacroiliitis can include unexplained groin pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, leg inflammation and even sciatic type nerve problems. Because of these symptoms, often times physicians look to the lower back and hips as the main cause and so the patient usually continues to have off/on chronic issues in that area, leading to potentially severe osteoarthritis of the S/I joint. It is important to understand that the S/I joint relies on the health of the surrounding structures to maintain its health. For example; Weak ligaments and tendons in the area can cause mal-alignment of vital musculoskeletal structures, greatly contributing to S/I joint problems. Additionally knee problems, over extended periods of time can contribute to S/I joint issues. What to do? Steroid or cortico-steroid injections should be an absolute last option because of the potential long term negative side effects to the joint and surrounding connective tissue. Many options for treating the S/I joint are available that may even restore full normal function. The goal of these treatments is NOT only pain suppression, but rather to eliminate the cause by correcting mal-aligned structures, improving the health of the joint and reducing the ligament laxity or weakness. Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover this treatment. To see if you qualify, call Total HealthCare Medical Clinics. Norcross 770-416-9995 or Sandy Springs 678-9998531

Improve the Look of Your Legs By Louis G. Prevosti, MD, FACS

You may be one of the millions of Americans that suffer from varicose veins and their little sibling, spider veins. Maybe you watch your diet, try to exercise when you can, take vitamins, but yet those unsightly veins slowly keep getting worse. Varicose veins, spider veins, and blue reticular veins can cause you to suffer physically, with aching, tired, heavy legs. You may also experience burning or itching. Or maybe your suffering is psychological, due to selfconsciousness or embarrassment and the burden of keeping your legs covered in public. Why did this happen to you? Well, there is nothing you did, or didn’t do to cause them. Chances are you had one or more risk factors.

Over half of all women have spider veins and 90% of all women have some form of visible venous disease, as do 2/3 of all men. Did your parents or grandparents have varicose veins? Like many other medical conditions, hereditary predisposition is a major risk factor for developing abnormal veins. A family history of vein problems gives women a fivefold increased chance of developing varicose veins and fourfold increase for men.

Carrie Female gender, as well as multiple pregnancies is a risk factor for venous disease. The female hormone progesterone causes veins to dilate, and when a vein remains dilated for long periods of time, the valve leaflets pull apart and reflux occurs. Progesterone levels rise and fall with your menstrual cycle, and remain elevated for 9 months during pregnancy. circusart_4th.indd 1 This is the reason why many women experience varicose veins for the first time during pregnancy. Multiple pregnancies have an additive effect on causing permanent vein reflux, so it is a common story to hear that a woman’s veins get worse after each pregnancy.

Long periods of standing, usually related to work or parenting, also puts you at risk for venous problems. Vocations that require standing most of the day, such as teachers, healthcare workers, the service industry, the travel industry, and childcare are commonly associated with symptomatic venous disease. That’s because when we are upright, gravity is constantly trying to push blood back down our legs, putting stress on the valves. Visible veins can start at a surprisingly early age. In one study of women 18-20 years old, 12% had spider veins, and 35% had reticular veins. Reticular veins are the blue veins that are visible under the skin and are commonly found near spider veins. As we age, like other areas of our body, the valves can wear out, and the constant effects of gravity take its toll. 45% of women over 40 have venous reflux disease, and the percent increases to 70% at the age of 60.

my attitude Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

Positive thinking can change your outlook By Venus Abbey, CH, CI, DD No one can dispute the power of the mind. There are countless reported stories of terminally ill patients that get well and doctors cannot explain how or why, or the placebo effect in drug studies and the miraculous spontaneous “healings” that occur. How can we unlock our potential mind power and make it work for us? We can change our lives by changing our thoughts. We can experience more successful and fulfilling lives, by changing our perceptions and patterns. Many times we have beliefs buried in our subconscious minds that are impeding our growth, blocking us from achieving our goals in all aspects of our lives. Success means different things to different people. However people need balance in their lives to bring about a feeling of satisfaction or fulfillment. We all want to have healthy bodies, healthy relationships, a sense of accomplishment in our vocations, whether that is to be a good parent and spouse, a gratifying career, or simply a job well done. We feel happier when we can balance work and play, and healthy living and a little indulgence. But how can we keep this balance and move toward success in all areas of our life? The secret to success is in our minds. How we feel about ourselves affects how we feel about others and how they feel about us. Deep-rooted fears, low self-confidence, low self-worth, anger and sadness are a few of many negative driving forces that block us from being all that we can be. We behave and respond to life according to our belief systems inherent in the subconscious mind like a computer program. These programs are developed as a result of our life’s experiences to help us navigate through life and cope with challenges. Negative experiences can create selfdefeating or self-sabotaging programs. Most of the time we are unaware of these programs and wonder why, despite our efforts to move forward, we just seem to be stuck or unable to achieve our goals. Hypnosis is a great method to discovering the deep-seated sources of life’s road blocks. By addressing the sources that impede us and changing the programs, we can then begin to change how life responds to us, thus unlocking our potential. Self-empowerment is key to success in all that we do!

Pay for college without going broke!

12:21:59 PM

Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

my teeth Safeguarding Your Mouth By Dr. Dina J. Giesler

April has been named the National Youth Sports Safety Month. Statistics show dental injuries are the most common injuries sustained during sports, most of which are preventable. According to the Bureau of Health Education, it is estimated that annually, more than 200,000 oral-facial injuries are prevented because of mandatory mouth guard wear in football alone. Because most coaches do not require mouth guards, many parents and children don’t know the benefits, but rather the repercussions of not having one.

Forget all-or-nothing dieting, emotional eating, being obsessed your weight, and feeling out of control around food. Learn how to nourish your body to a healthy size with a PRIVATE FOOD COACH. The difference between success and failure is the combination of effort, accountability and support. You put in the effort; I’ll provide the accountability and support.

What is a mouth guard? A mouth guard is a flexible appliance worn during sports and other recreational activities to protect teeth and the surrounding soft tissues from any damage. Its purpose is a preventative appliance for broken teeth, lacerated lips, jaw fractures and other trauma to the mouth and neck area.

Who needs a mouth guard? Mouth guards should be used by all ages, old and young! The American Dental Association recommends the use of a mouth guard for 29 sports activities. It’s not restricted to specific sports, but more-so those that have a chance of contact with other players or hard surfaces.

1-866-869-1508

What are the different types of mouth guards?

www.bellatrixnutrition.com

Bellatrix_4th.indd 1

As a dentist, we recommend a custom-fitted mouth guard. Generic mouth protectors are available at most athletic stores, however many users complain that they are bulky and non-adjustable which defeats its purpose. Custom-fitted protection is made by your dentist to fit each individual’s teeth and provide optimal protection. 2/15/11 12:30:22 PM

Your ideal mouth guard should also: •Permit speaking and does not restrict breathing •Stay securely in place during action •Be comfortable and fitted •Be durable and tear-resistant

Can my child wear mouth guards with braces?

Our interviews are absolutely free.

Yes! The chances of damaging the soft tissues around the mouth area are higher when wearing braces. A mouth guard serves as the protective layer between braces, lips and cheeks, preventing lacerations, bruises and the like.

Why do my children need to wear mouth guards? Let’s be realistic, sports are naturally aggressive and involve contact with other players. Being proactive is key. Dental costs, time in the dental chair and the possibility of further dental problems are just a few repercussions for victims of knocked out teeth. Rather than waiting for a tooth to get knocked out, take the extra step, in hopes of avoiding that situation.

Where can I get a quality mouth guard? Custom-fitted mouth guards are made at the dental office. After taking impressions of your teeth, a special material is molded over the impression, forming the mouth guard. It usually takes a few days to complete the guard. Generic mouth guards are available at most athletic stores; however, the response rate of users is dissatisfactory.
