Rave Reviews for the Atlanta Center For Cosmetic Dentistry
Be the hero you wish to see in the world Whether in the spotlight or unsung, heroes come in all shapes and sizes, nationalities and creeds. Whether it was your fourth grade teacher, your parents or a longtime friend, people who touch our lives and our hearts are never forgotten. My personal hero is my dad, who I will celebrate with on Father’s Day, June 19th. In this issue, we wanted to honor just a few of the amazing people in our community with our Over 40 and Fabulous feature (page 36). This extraordinary group lets us know there are many people out there making a difference to others and in their community. Summer is not only a time to enjoy with friends and loved ones, but also a time to travel. If you’re looking for some fun close to home, make sure to check out our Best Finds (page 14) section for a few great ideas. The summer is ripe with possibility, so don’t let another day go by without getting involved with your community, letting the people in your life know you love them and enjoying life to the fullest! Happy reading! Follow us on

bestfun Explore new ways to get more out of life Coming to Your Senses By Jeyme Colodne Using all five senses is something that some of us may take for granted. The exhibit Dialog in the Dark challenges people to use their other senses while denying them one – sight. The tour begins when a blind or visually impaired guide leads a group through a series of different exhibit rooms all designed to replicate everyday places like the street, a park, a grocery store and more. The group must get through each exhibit using a walking cane, as well as relying on their hearing, smell and touch. Upon entering the first part of the exhibit, my group is seated on illuminated cube stools as we listen to an introduction to the exhibit. As the voiceover explains what we’ll be experiencing, the stools begin losing their glow until we are in complete darkness. All of a sudden a friendly voice calls out,“Hello! I’m Jimmy and I’ll be your guide tonight!” I feel a flash of panic as Jimmy explains that we should stand up and follow the sound of his voice as we attempt to exit the first room. This is harder than it sounds, as it takes several minutes for us all to shuffle around and find the exit. As we walk through each exhibit, there are mumbles of ‘sorry for bumping into you’ as well as scuffles and bumps as my group walks into things and each other. Throughout it all, Jimmy’s calm, clear voice is patient and helpful as he takes us through each room. It was an amazing experience and definitely a challenge! Q
What is pityrosporum and how can it be treated?
Pityrosporum is a yeast and a normal inhabitant of everyone’s skin. It is also responsible for many rashes, one of which is tinea versicolor. This is a common fungal infection of the skin. Tinea versicolor appears as white, red or brown scaly patches on the skin and is more common in the summer. It generally becomes apparent after sun exposure. This is because the areas affected do not tan. When tinea versicolor is limited, it can be treated with an over the counter antidandruff shampoo. However, it can be extensive and sometimes confused with other skin diseases. If you think you are suffering Gabrielle M. Sabini, MD from this, it is better to seek out a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and to receive a more North Atlanta Dermatology potent lotion or oral medication.

Q
What treatment options are available for early stage breast cancer in women over 50 years old?
One option is to have a lumpectomy followed by partial breast irradiation. A balloon is inserted into the lumpectomy cavity and inflated using saline. The patient is then treated using High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy, where a radioactive source is fed through a catheter into the balloon and left in place for approximately 5-15 minutes. This treatment is performed twice a day for five days instead of the standard daily external beam radiation treatments to the entire breast for six to seven weeks. Partial breast radiation yields good to excellent cosmetic results with very few cancer recurrences in the breast. This technique requires discussion with your doctor prior to the lumpectomy to determine whether you will be a candidate for this procedure.
Is weight loss beneficial in treating joint pain due to osteoarthritis?
Weight loss is the most effective, natural way to decrease knee and hip pain due to osteoarthritis. Being only 10 pounds overweight increases the force on the knee by 30-60 pounds! Clearly, being overweight increases stress on the joint which can hasten the breakdown of cartilage. It has been estimated that a force up to six times body weight is exerted across the knee while walking. A program of cutting back on dietary fat and total calories combined with daily moderate physical activity can result in weight loss which may substantially reduce joint pain due to osteoarthritis.

When is it time to freeze your eggs?
At this time, cryopreservation of eggs continues to be described by The American Society for Reproductive Medicine as “experimental” and it is recommended that it be performed under Investigational Review Board oversight. Therefore, it remains a procedure recommended only for those women with medical reasons to be concerned about fertility preservation. Medical reasons for fertility preservation include pending cancer therapy, and other surgeries or treatments which are proven to reduce ovarian reserve.

Q
What are some tips for a good night’s sleep?
The keystone to good sleep is getting up at the same time every morning. Most adults need 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Good sleep quality is variable because it depends on personal preferences for sleep environment, setting, temperature, etc. Determine what works best for you and make it routine.

Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps 8. Decreased or poor judgment
The Alzheimer’s Association - Georgia Chapter is one organization whose goal is to raise awareness of the disease. Since 1982, the Georgia Chapter has served thousands of people, and continues to provide a number of services designed to educate and uplift their community. From spearheading educational programs and research efforts, to providing phone support services and fundraisers, the organization has established itself as a valuable resource for many Georgia residents affected by Alzheimer’s. Leslie H. Anderson, President and CEO of the Georgia Chapter, says that there are a variety of opportunities to get involved. The organization hosts events such as the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and golf tournaments. Each year, Alzheimer’s Awareness Day is hosted at the state capitol and there are many volunteer activities available. In June, the organization will host the Dancing Stars of Atlanta fundraising competition, a spin-off of the “Dancing With the Stars” television show. The idea behind the fundraiser is for each dancer to reach a goal of $10,000. In 2010, event participants ranged from CEOs to professional athletes and politicians. “It’s a unique way for us to celebrate the people who support us and support those who need us,” Anderson says. Today, the Alzheimer’s Association - Georgia Chapter is involved in research surrounding early detection of the disease. In January, the National Alzheimer’s Project Act was passed, which Anderson says is an historic legislative victory for the Alzheimer community. The NAPA will allow supporters to help coordinate efforts to evaluate and overcome the effects of Alzheimer’s through community based programs and research. Alongside their ongoing support of Alzheimer’s advocacy on the national level, the Georgia Chapter plans to carry out a plan of its own. Through accelerated research, educational efforts and the growing revenue, the Georgia Chapter plans to continue their efforts to fight the disease. “The tsunami that is Alzheimer’s disease is here and we simply must be ready for it,” says Anderson.
Dancing Stars of Atlanta Our publisher, Sherri Adair will be dancing with Christjohn Batters at the Loews Hotel in Midtown, Saturday, June 18, to help raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. If you would like to join us at the event or donate (any amount is greatly appreciated), please visit Sherri’s fundraising page at www. dancingstarsof atlanta. kintera.org/sherriadair

Know the 10 Signs - Early Detection of Alzheimers’s
In Georgia, there are approximately 200,000 people with Alzheimer’s and the population of caregivers more than doubles that number. Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that gradually deteriorates the function of the brain. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are ongoing efforts to help people who have the disease and their loved ones to cope.

6/7/11 10:17:40 AM Ask Ally
realbeauty Ask Aly your true beauty questions Q: I haven’t updated my makeup in years. I was wondering what the best way to approach this would be?
A:
An Alyism: “People can tell exactly how old you are by the way you wear your makeup.” Your makeup will date you if you haven’t modernized it in at least five years. I think a lot of women wear the same makeup because it was the way they first learned it or when they felt most attractive. Somehow, I think that the act of applying makeup using a familiar method is a way to connect with the past. Let go of the past and invent a new you! One way to do this is to look through magazines or other media and see what type of look or colors you’re attracted to. Once you have about 15 photos make an image board or collage. Examine the pictures you selected. Look into your makeup bag and honestly assess your choices. Ask yourself, does your makeup give you what you need to achieve the look you desire? You should choose products based on their effect. In other words, don’t choose stuff based on its packaging or selling points. Look at what it does on your face. You must start with an end result in mind and then choose products that will give you the effect. You should also select the right tools for the job. ccording to commercials for K-Y Jelly His & Hers lubricant, sex is pleasurable and convenient, with both participants on even playing fields (or equal sides of the bed, at least). If only sex was that simple, right? What the advertisements fail to show are children demanding all of ‘his and her’ attention, finances causing a strain on the relationship, one or both parties gaining weight, hormones running wild, and
passion taking a complete and utter nose-dive. When a couple’s sex life becomes virtually nonexistent, infidelity and divorce become a real threat.

Before you expect the worst, take heart: anyone, at any age, can improve his or her sex life. Offering more than just physical perks, sex does a body good emotionally and mentally. From relieving stress, to burning calories, to improving heart health, the benefits of sex and intimacy extend well beyond the bedroom. “A healthy sex life contributes to overall feelings of satisfaction and general happiness for most people,” says Lynley S. Durrett, MD, of McDaniel and Durrett, P.C.
We Used to ‘Do It’ More In the beginning of a relationship, people often fall in love with the newness itself—you know, the sweaty palms, butterflies in the stomach, endless laughter, stories never heard before, the first kiss. The list goes on and on. When sex is introduced, it is often exciting, pleasurable and frequent; the attraction is powerful and the passion is undeniable. Unfortunately, sex has a tendency to slow down as a relationship evolves. “Priorities change after awhile—the relationship that was once the central focus begins to take a backseat to other priorities, including work, family, self-care and even friends,” says Gerald S. Drose, Ph.D., of Powers Ferry Psychological Associates. “The most common complaint I receive from patients is that everyday commitments and stresses leave them too tired for sex,” Durrett says. “Differing schedules, preferences, business travel, and physical changes can alter a person’s interest in sex. Both women and men can experience loss of desire related to aging, as well as side effects of medications or chronic medical conditions,” she adds. According to Sarah Ghayouri, MD, medical director at Atlanta Wellness and Aesthetics, “Sex improves a person’s quality of life, well-being and longevity. Some causes affecting a healthy sex life include hormonal imbalance or deficiency, feeling exhausted from the constant demands of children, bringing arguments and complaints to bed, allowing oneself to be consumed with work or other stresses, and taking each other for granted.”
Problems on Both Mars and Venus Contrary to popular belief, women are not the only ones who suffer from a low libido. One in five men has a low sex drive, and 30 percent of women claim to be more interested in sex than their partner. While sexual dysfunction in women is more prominent and publicized, men who experience a low sexual desire are inclined to keep quiet. Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) affects 20 percent of women and 10 percent of men. Individuals who are diagnosed with this condition can function sexually, but have little-to-no desire for sexual activity. “Many men may have low testosterone, which is a relatively common condition that starts between ages 35 and 40,” Ghayouri says. Other contributing factors of HSDD in men include androgen insufficiency syndrome, low calculated free testosterone (CFT), hypothyroidism, elevated prolactin, obesity, and psychological issues like low self-esteem. While men may suffer from a low sex drive, HSDD is more prevalent in women. “There is a saying that men need sex to relax, but women need to relax to have sex. Over exhaustion from daily responsibilities is one of the biggest reasons women lose interest in sex,”
notes Durrett. Other causes of a depleted sexual desire in women include medical issues, side effects from medication(s), psychiatric troubles, low testosterone levels and raised prolactin levels.
Forget the Laundry—Let’s Turn Up the Heat Google the term ‘how to improve your sex life’ and you will be provided with hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of websites. Don’t allow this to overwhelm you. Putting passion back into your relationship does not have to be complicated. Listen to your body, communicate with your partner, be completely honest and, most importantly, work together. “Both men and women need to feel desired. Steer clear of comfort and head into more unfamiliar territory. Comfort, which we all seek at some point, actually interferes with a healthy sex life. Good sex should challenge us,” Drose comments. “When trying to put passion back into your love life, I encourage people to focus on the relationship. Relationships evolve over time, depending on changes in family environment, work, stress, physical conditions, etc. One couple may be empty nesters while another may have young children that take the focus away. I highly recommend spending more time together outside of the bedroom—dining out, finding new hobbies… anything that deepens the relationship and sets the stage for more intimacy,” says Durrett. It is common knowledge that women seek greater intimacy than men. Women’s sex drives are influenced by social and cultural factors. Sexual satisfaction is not as direct as their male counterparts: women often require an emotional connection, and they experience orgasms differently. “Women typically want and need more foreplay in order to achieve the level of arousal that men can in a much shorter time,” Durrett comments. “If sex has become routine, both parties may lose interest. Men and women often have different baseline needs for the frequency of desired intercourse, so sexual needs must be communicated in order to keep everyone content,” she adds.
There is nothing sexier than a confident man or woman, and the payoff is in the bedroom. According to Rachel Payne of House of Payne Personal Training, “Exercise definitely improves your sex life. In addition to improved endurance, more energy and a healthy libido, exercise boosts a person’s self-confidence—the key to keeping your sex life hot. There is nothing sexier than a confident man or woman, and the payoff is in the bedroom.” Make an effort to look your best; reserve a little time for the two of you; and flirt like you did in the early stages of your relationship. Payne firmly believes in the many benefits of exercise, including its ability to increase one’s stamina. “Everyone wants to feel an intimate connection with his or her partner. Women want time; men want attentiveness. Try to recreate what you did when you first dated, because when you date, you are always at your best.”
Foreplay, Positions and Toys, Oh My! Oftentimes, infrequent sex and lack of desire are not the result of exhaustion, hormonal imbalance, anger and resentment, or physical changes. Instead, couples merely find themselves bored in the bedroom. If your sex life is about as exciting as watching paint dry, it’s time to experiment. Without passion in the bedroom, your relationship is borderline ‘just friends.’ Bring sparks back into your love life with foreplay (and don’t be afraid to get creative). “Foreplay is very important for the sexual

Lifestyle Changes Question: My husband just turned 60 and is pretty healthy except for high blood pressure and high cholesterol but he is very good about taking his medications. He is a little overweight but we eat a healthy diet with no red meat and lots of fruits and vegetables. The problem is that he is having a little problem in bed. He has prescriptions for Viagra and Cialis, but I’m worried about all the side effects I’ve heard about. Is there a natural way to fix his problem? Answer: Erectile dysfunction is a common but complex problem. The most common cause is decreased blood flow into the penis, but this physical problem can lower a man’s self-esteem and lead to emotional problems that further diminish sexual performance. Erectile dysfunction is not a normal sign of aging. It is a sign of clogged inflamed arteries that can be healed with lifestyle changes. To understand this you have to understand some basic male physiology. • When a man is aroused his brain signals the arteries in his penis to relax and allow blood to flow in. • As the arteries fill up they squeeze off the veins to keep the blood in and maintain the erection. • The stronger and faster blood flows in, the firmer the erection will be. • Anything that slows blood flow into the penis weakens the erection. • The arteries in the penis are smaller than the arteries that supply the heart so they show signs of clogging earlier. High blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and erectile dysfunction are actually all early warning sign of heart disease and stroke. In addition, the medications he takes to lower his blood pressure and cholesterol may decrease arousal and prevent arteries in the penis from opening to allow in flow of blood. Drugs like Viagra work by widening arteries to increase blood flow into the penis but your husband can do this without the side effects by simply changing to a plant-based diet. Eating fish is slightly better than chicken which is no better than red meat. The research evidence is abundant and clear, eating a plant based diet is the only way to permanently unclog your arteries. Along with unclogging your arteries you have to examine your relationship. Interestingly, less than 50% of prescriptions for drugs like Viagra are actually refilled each year because emotional issues such as long-standing unresolved resentment and anger cannot be fixed by a pill or unclogging your arteries. —Jennifer Rooke, MD, MPH, FACPM, FACOEM is the Medical Director of Atlanta Lifestyle Medicine. satisfaction of women, as it helps to raise oxytocin,” says Ghayouri. “Oxytocin plays an important role in orgasm, which in turn helps with passion and the couple’s overall bond.” As long as the sexual act has been communicated and agreed upon, nothing should be off limits in the bedroom (or kitchen, or dryer, or car). With sex toys, you will find a whole new world you never knew existed. While they may not be your personal preference, be willing to at least try them out. (Who knows, you may actually enjoy them!) Don’t be timid—ask the sales associate for a few of the store’s hottest items and why they are popular. Couples often use sex toys or watch pornography together to reach a higher climax that could not otherwise be achieved. “Again, this is where communication is key. Both partners must be comfortable with trying new things; otherwise, one partner may feel intimidated or uncomfortable with too much variety. The goal is to find what works and is fun for both of you,” Durrett says. Finally, if the ‘missionary’ position has become the norm, consider trying new positions. If you’re simply stumped for ideas, check out 101 Sex Positions: Steamy New Positions from Mild to Wild by Samm Taylor. This book reveals various ways to spice up your sex life, from straightforward to downright adventurous. Changing your love-making routine is a surefire way to turn up the heat in your relationship.

It’s important to conduct a ‘quality check’ on your sex life every so often, because a sexstarved relationship is in grave danger of falling apart. The good news is you and your partner can enjoy incredible, mind-blowing sex at any age. “[Sigmund] Freud referred to the drive to have sex as the life force, or libido. He believed it was a basic instinct that, when suppressed, caused depression and other maladies,” Drose says. “While I'm not a Freudian, I am convinced that he is right about this. Stated more positively, sex invigorates our lives and everything we do, and certainly helps sustain our relationships.”

It is the often tedious, mundane, monotonous act of consistent discipline that significant breakthroughs occur. Favorite workout: Workouts with my trainer, Day Adeogba. Favorite weekend getaway: Really looking forward to Tough Mudder Northern California September of this year! Who do you admire: Johnny Cash and Donald E. Grady, Sr. BEST SELF ATLANTA

AND FABULOUS!
Read below to meet more of our 40 fabulous winners for our 2011 Over 40 & Fabulous Contest – all winners receive a prize package and will be celebrated at our party at The Big Ketch this month. ALISON PACE
Age: 46 Fab Factor: Above being beautiful on the outside, she also has a beautiful heart. She is loyal, giving and truly a lifelong friend! She also volunteers with many charity organizations. - Nominated by a friend What inspires you? For inspiration I need only look towards my husband, family and friends. My parents always made great efforts to instill good values and a strong work ethic in me. One of my dad’s favorite quotes is, ‘winners never quit and quitters never win.’ It is a favorite of mine as well and good words to live by. Also anyone going through cancer is an inspiration to me. Your best piece of advice? Definitely share with those less fortunate than you. It gives you a feeling that is indescribable. Give back however you can and hope that your efforts make a difference. Even if nobody knows what you are doing, you know down inside that you have given your all. Take care of yourself. You can’t be good for others if you aren’t good to yourself. And last but not least, set goals and work towards achieving them. What makes you laugh: My husband Gary. Name something on your Bucket List: Shark diving. Favorite fictional character: Why, Ms. Scarlett O’Hara of course.
MONA MAERZ Age: 42
Fab Factor: She is a corporate attorney with Chamberlain Hrdlicka. She has been a champion dressage competitor and is now a champion amateur ballroom dancer. – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? Unconditional love. Your best piece of advice? Take responsibility for everything you do. No blaming! Never settle for mediocre - shine! Avoid drama. Decide what’s important to you and follow your heart, and in that process, forgive yourself. Be keenly aware and grateful of the fortunes that you have been given and let the joy and sheer delight of knowing that you are here for yet another day inspire you. And most importantly, surround yourself with smart, compassionate people, who are talented in ways that you are not, and who are not afraid to constantly remind you of all of the above, so that you can keep working on it. Favorite workout: Until recently I thought it was galloping through the finish line of a cross country course at a horse show on my horse Taz, but now that I started ballroom dancing I find that waltzing on the competition floor is just as Photo courtesy of Stephen Marino exciting. What makes you laugh: When others laugh - so infectious to see joy! Who do you admire: My husband. The kindest, smartest and most patient person I know who makes me want to be a better person every day!
BARB WEBB Age: 52
Fab Factor: She’s a personnel administrator, clinical research coordinator, artist, photographer, wife, mother, nana, and friend. Barb’s co-workers and friends know they can count on her. For the past eight years she has been her company’s team captain for the Susan Komen Race for the Cure. – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? I inspire myself and I’m self motivated. When I see something unique or interesting I’m inspired to paint. When I see something beautiful, I’m inspired to take a photo. When I hear a conversation about a relationship, good or bad, I’m inspired to write poetry. When I see or hear of a person in need, I’m inspired to help. I’m inspired by the thought of a positive outcome. Your best piece of advice? People need to learn to believe in themselves. They need to take a chance - It’s 50/50 if they do take a chance and if they don’t, it’s 0%. It seems obvious to me now, but I wish I would have taken my own advice earlier in life. Favorite weekend getaway: Going to the mountains and staying in a cozy cabin, with a hot tub, of course. Nature is soothing to my soul. Name something on your Bucket List: Snorkeling and experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Australia’s most remarkable natural gift, the Great Barrier Reef. Who do you admire: I admire my friends; Friends who have made my life easier, more enjoyable and love me, for being me.
AMY LANCE
Age: 45 Fab Factor: Amy is the Chastain Horse Park President and Founder, and has a strong dedication to serving the Atlanta community. – Nominated by a co-worker What inspires you? New ideas and inventions, old traditions passed down for years, and personal touches such as handwritten notes. Your best piece of advice? Find the silver lining in each situation - and in each person (especially those you work and/or live with). That’s an ongoing daily effort which will take your focus away from the negative which sometimes tends to be easier to see. What famous historical person would you want to meet: Jesus. What makes you laugh: The bright side of every situation, someone’s true wit, and my own follies. Who do you admire: The people I know who possess genuine character, morals, and a true sense of what is valuable.

VERDERY TRIMMER
Age: 55 Fab Factor: She is an extraordinary mom, friend and community volunteer. She eats healthy and is committed to fitness. In addition to taking care of herself, and her two sons, she spends countless hours serving as President of the Athletic Association at Wheeler High School and working with the SCAN Foundation. –Nominated by a friend What inspires you? I am inspired by seeing, feeling and knowing that I am making a difference; having an impact as a mother, daughter, sister, friend, colleague, school parent, employee, community volunteer. This means giving my all, doing my best, being my best in all aspects of my life. Your best piece of advice? You must begin with a solid ‘personal’ foundation, starting with a strong body, mind and spirit. Do whatever it takes to get in shape and stay in shape; to feel good physically; to be physically fit. Feeling good physically is a pre-requisite to nurturing a healthy mind and to be able to truly connect with one’s spirit. Favorite weekend getaway: California Coast Bed & Breakfast with an ocean view! Actually, any Bed & Breakfast, anywhere. Name something on your Bucket List: Italy Who do you admire: My mom and dad and my friend Allison.
DONNA DOMBROWSKI
Age: 51 Fab Factor: She is a wonderful role model and the best mother and friend ever. She lives a healthy lifestyle and encourages others to do the same. – Nominated by her daughter What inspires you? My inspiration for living a healthy lifestyle is biblically based. My body is my temple and I feel that I need to take care of it as such. It’s a reflection of my walk with my Lord. It’s difficult at times, but when I remember why I need to take care of myself, it’s not so difficult. Your best piece of advice? To improve your life in all aspects starts with a deep rooted faith and a meaningful desire to achieve peace at all times and at all costs. I believe that there is always something positive that you can take away from any situation in life. Favorite movie: Braveheart - can’t get any more romantic than that! Favorite workout: Tennis, tennis and more tennis.
BEVERLY OWEN Age: 61
Fab Factor: She’s a business owner, wife, mother and grandmother and balances it all with grace. She chooses a healthy lifestyle as a vegetarian and regular exercise. – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? I am so inspired when I talk to individuals who have been through great difficulties in life yet they remain positive and giving. Your best piece of advice? Other than the obvious (nutrition and exercise) I think one of the greatest benefits you can give yourself is to learn to be content in life. Happiness is a great anti-aging element. Learn to embrace and enjoy every phase of your life. Favorite book: Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. (It really makes you think). What makes you laugh: Anyone or anything with a “quirky” sense of humor. Let’s put it this way, I love Far Side humor and British movies! Favorite weekend getaway: I guess I go for extremes—it’s a toss up between the sun and sand at Hilton Head or hiking the mountains around Asheville, NC.
BILL MURPHY Age: 41

He also conducts tremendous fundraising efforts each year and puts tens of thousands of dollars back into his community for important, child-centric programs. A family man through and through, he enjoys vacationing with his wife and two children and coaching his son’s football team. – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? My children. Your best piece of advice? Stay positive and use negative to inspire successful thinking. Always believe in yourself. Favorite book: Body Confidence by Mark McDonald. Favorite weekend getaway: Fort Lauderdale, Florida. What makes you laugh: I find humor and inspiration everyday through my work, my staff and my family. Photo courtesy of Willian David Salon

His most recent achievement is helping create and manage the Aquarium’s largest expansion since opening, a $110 million dolphin gallery and show. He has traveled around the world helping conduct conservation and research projects in the field and transport animals to the Aquarium. – Nominated by a co-worker What inspires you? My wife. She is arguably the best motivation in my life to be a good person, partner, and father. I also find inspiration from the animals I am so fortunate to work with; Mother Nature gets me every time! Your best piece of advice? Start anywhere, any day. One small step becomes a journey if you keep taking the small steps consistently. Name something on your Bucket List: Climb Everest. What makes you laugh: Almost everything, but most certainly my children. Who do you admire: My father. BEST SELF ATLANTA

These are personal commitment and integrity; embracing challenge; professional experience and expertise; passion and energy for the work; and leading in the community! - Nominated by a friend What inspires you? Observing acts of human kindness, especially when extended to strangers and when nothing in return is asked or expected. Your best piece of advice? Be intentional about spending time with friends and developing authentic and meaningful friendships. Also, maintain a positive outlook and attitude. It is not about what happens to you, but how you respond to what happens to you that matters. Favorite weekend getaway: The Georgia mountains, although I prefer the Montana mountains but that is way more than a weekend. Favorite book: Lonesome Dove. What makes you laugh: My husband’s corny jokes.
CYNTHIA FRISINA GRAY

I’m also inspired daily by all the parents of children with disabilities I come in contact with through my foundation “Reaching for the Stars.” Your best piece of advice? The best advice I could give someone is to live life fearlessly and without regret as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to fail or try something new. Develop a love of learning. If you have children, love them unconditionally. Be authentic. Teach them the Golden Rule. Unconditional love is the greatest gift of all you can give them. Favorite book: To Kill A Mockingbird. Name something on your Bucket List: Visit Bhutan. What famous historical person would you want to meet: Cleopatra.

At the gym he is always willing to help anyone with questions and is always encouraging to those who want to better themselves. – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? I can say with certainty my inspiration comes from the role I play in helping others achieve their goals. As a rehab sports chiropractor I have treated athletes from all over the world and not only helped them but learned from them. Your best piece of advice? The best most simplistic advice I can give to anyone I walk with on their path to better health is don’t beat yourself up over perfectionism but strive for excellence in everything you do. Striving for excellence will bring fulfillment knowing that you have accomplished your goal to the best of your ability. Favorite workout: Plyometric body weight and military style obstacle course workout with walls and cargo nets and rope climbs. What makes you laugh: My two year old daughter. Who do you admire: I admire people who try and make the lives of others better selflessly and Albert Einstein.
DR. DINA GIESLER
Age: I’ll be 48 on August 18. Fab Factor: Her big heart and never-ending compassion has shaped who she is today and how she treats the people around her. Professionally, she takes dentistry to a new level with her patients, using a dose of empathy and perfects her craft with an artist’s delicate touch. She is also a wife and mother of three active kids. – Nominated by a co-worker What inspires you? The miracles, hope and grace of God. Your best piece of advice? Always follow your passion. Get your priorities right. Your spiritual life has to be number one; your family is number two; and your work number three. Once you have health and balance, your life will be positive, rewarding, productive and fun! Name something on your Bucket List: The Kentucky Derby. What makes you laugh: My family, we are a reality show. Who do you admire: Women who do it all. Photo courtesy of Parish Kohanim
LISA DWYER Age: 42

I’m inspired by people who make other people’s lives better in any way. And by my kids--watching them in their activities makes me know the choices I’ve made make a difference to them. Your best piece of advice? On improving life: simplify, simplify---you cannot do everything, trust me, I’ve tried. Focus on one thing you want to improve at a time and you will achieve it. Then you can move onto the next. Favorite workout: A long tennis match. Favorite weekend getaway: Rosemary Beach (well a long weekend) Who do you admire: I admire anyone who sticks her neck out for the benefit of others. www.bestselfconnect.com

BETH MCCAULEY Age: 47
Fab Factor: Not only does Beth take great care of herself, with a career focused in medical marketing, she also takes great care of her Atlanta community as well. – Nominated by a co-worker What inspires you? Witnessing growth inspires me. Whether it’s personal growth from challenging myself to try and learn new things, or watching others grow using professional advice I’ve given them to help improve their businesses, it makes me all the more passionate about what I do. Your best piece of advice? Try your best to have a good attitude (it makes people more likely to want to help you and also makes challenges easier to deal with); improve your intelligence by continuing to regularly read and actually listening to what people share with you; show initiative and go after what you want, but don’t lose sight of your ethics in doing so. Favorite book: I would have to say Atlas Shrugged, because it scares me while at the same time reminding me how much I appreciate our freedoms. Favorite weekend getaway: Lake Hartwell. What makes you laugh: My husband’s amazing sense of humor.
GAIL DELEEDE Age: 58
Fab Factor: When I asked Gail what she would like to be remembered for, she replied, ‘Being the best single mom I could be.’ Besides juggling a business and eating healthy and staying fit, her two kids are a testament to the type of role model she is. – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? Inspiration to me seems to be constant and constantly changing. It can be watching a random act of kindness, laughing at an adorable video of animals, spending time talking with a best friend, eating cake or watching how “grown-up” my kids can be now that they’re in their 20s. Your best piece of advice? Chill out! The stress level of the normal person these days is crazy, and oftentimes it seems to be over the smallest things or things they simply cannot control. Save the stress for the big things. When life’s hiccups occur, take a deep breath, drink a glass of wine, and chill out! Favorite movie: Thelma & Louise. Gotta love those crazy, strong women. What makes you laugh: Too much wine. Then, everything is funny. Who do you admire: Believe it or not, my ex-husband.
JEFF CARRICO Age: 47
Fab Factor: Jeff truly cares for other people in his efforts to raise funds for www.projectopenhand.org. – Nominated by a co-worker What inspires you? I’m inspired by people who recognize the needs of others in our community and step up to the plate to assist in any way they can. If we don’t help those who need a hand, who will? Your best piece of advice? Recognize that every single day presents another opportunity to start a new and exciting chapter in the autobiography of our lives. That said, don’t expect to fit everything into one chapter in a single day – that’s not how great books are written. Favorite book: Me Talk Pretty One Day, by David Sedaris. Name something on your Bucket List: Skydiving. Who do you admire: Anyone that sets their sites on something seemingly impossible and goes for it. Whether or not they succeed is beside the point.
JON ROSS Age: 42
Fab Factor: Jon left the corporate world to follow his dream of working in the endurance industry. He has been a motivational speaker and continues to deliver his message of motivation, determination, and the mindset that age is just a number. – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? Much of my inspiration comes from the possibility of one day having earned the responsibility of being in a position to inspire others. Your best piece of advice? Set goals for yourself that are attainable, but approach achieving them with the mindset that they are always just beyond your reach. Favorite workout: Running long miles on the trails Name something on your Bucket List: To ‘buckle’ at the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run in California with a sub 24-hour finish. Who do you admire: My parents, of course, and anyone who has ‘been there, done that’ when it comes to personal goals that I hope to accomplish.

She always reminds us how important living a healthy lifestyle is. –Nominated by her daughter What inspires you? My life! I always wanted to be a mom, (check). I always wanted to have a lot of children, (check times five). My children and I live in town in our “love shack” that we are truly blessed to have. We are surrounded by amazing people who are beautiful inside and out. Above all else, my faith. Favorite book: 4:8 Principle by Tommy Newberry. KAREN DANIEL
Age: 59 Fab Factor: Fit, fun and all around fantastic is how I would describe my friend and mentor, Karen. Not only does she take good care of herself, but she has been an active volunteer her whole life. –Nominated by a friend What inspires you? As co-president of the Alpharetta Junior Woman’s Club, I am inspired by the enthusiasm and joy I see in our younger members when they perform service for others. Your best piece of advice? I believe that if one wants to improve their life, they must first take care of themselves - both mentally and physically. Try to reduce stress, which is always a challenge. Make time to exercise - and it is crucial to find an exercise you enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it, you won’t make it a part of your routine. Lastly, I believe you must make time to serve others less fortunate. Favorite weekend getaway: Watching baseball (Braves, preferably) or college football (Go Dawgs!) Name something on your bucket list: To travel to the Netherlands to do genealogical research on my mother’s ancestors (she was a Holocaust survivor). What makes you laugh: My two sons - Josh and Travis.
KAREN VAUGHN
Age: 42 Fab Factor: She is a beautiful woman, inside and out. She is also an exceptional registered nurse. She always makes sure her patients have the utmost quality of care. She is very dedicated to her job and her family. –Nominated by her daughter What inspires you? I enjoy helping people and seeing a cosmetic patient feel beautiful when their procedure is completed and how it makes a huge difference in their lives. Every day I drive over 200 miles a day so that I can run Plastikos Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Plastikos Surgery Center, Millennium Healthcare, Avatar Industries and a few smaller companies. I also am inspired by my wonderful family who I love to come home to every night. Your best piece of advice? Don’t let anything hold you back and shoot for your dreams. No matter what position you’re in it is never too late to accomplish your goals. Favorite workout: Taking my two dachshunds for a long walk with my husband. Name something on your Bucket List: Scuba diving in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. What famous historical person would you want to meet: Princess Diana.
LADELL HILL Age: 46 (in June)
Fab Factor: He is the founder of Taste of Earth and has an extensive background of more than 20 years spent as an herbalist, wellness consultant, fitness trainer and speaker. Hill grew up learning about natural health practices from his grandfather. –Nominated by a friend What inspires you? My grandfather is my biggest inspiration. He lived a strong and healthy life until the age of 98, and I am lucky to say that he passed his knowledge of herbs and plants on to me. He always turned to herbal remedies to maintain his health and heal his body. He helped others too and was basically a medicine man. Your best piece of advice? You are what you eat! When judging how you feel on a daily basis, you will find that you will truly feel better, healthier and stronger if what you consume comes from the earth - fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts. Favorite workout: Mountain biking. Name something on your Bucket List: To study with an ethnobotanist. Who do you admire: My friend Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
DR. SUSAN HENDERSON Age: 41
Fab Factor: Over the last two years, Susan has helped create crosswalks, get crossing guards hired and get the state of Georgia to modify the stop lights to help make the walk to school easier. She also helped create a Nutritious and Wellness committee at school and has contributed to the overall health and welfare of our community. –Nominated by a friend What inspires you? People working together to get things done. Over the past several years, I have realized the power of community activism. Your best piece of advice? Do what you love. I’ve seen too many people struggle with the notion of success and end up living “successful” lives as defined by society, but they are really miserable. I think that each person defines success. Don’t worry about what other people think or say; if you are doing what you are truly passionate about you will make a difference. You need to set aside time to take care of yourself. If you don’t feel good about yourself, you won’t be a good role model for your children. Favorite weekend getaway: North Georgia camping trip (Vogel State Park). Name something on your Bucket List: Write a book. What makes you laugh: My daughters being silly.
VICTORIA GREEN
Age: 42 Fab Factor: Her strong, unyielding faith has carried her through several personal hardships. She is currently studying to be a nurse and she is one of those people, even after only a brief encounter, you leave feeling good and with a smile on your face. –Nominated by a friend What inspires you? Having faith and determination. Your best piece of advice? Take nothing for granted, be a blessing to someone else - and live, laugh & love! Favorite book: The Bible. What famous historical person you would want to meet: Malcolm X because when he went to Mecca, he saw that Muslims were people of all races living together in peace; hence, he then became an advocate for world brotherhood. Favorite workout: Power walking outdoors so I can relieve stress and take in some of natures sights. www.bestselfconnect.com

RICHIE ARPINO Age: Well, let’s put it this way, I can now be in your fab at 50 as well!
Fab Factor: He’s “young at heart;” absolutely, he’s hip; no doubt he’s current to the minute, but what makes him glow is that every morning, he wakes up and looks at the world and sees possibility – he’s a walking ball of yes! – Nominated by a friend What inspires you? My inspiration comes from the friends and extended family I have surrounded myself with, and of course that dynamo Mitchell Anderson! Your best piece of advice? Stay true to your goals, don’t let people talk you out of any ideas you may have. I wouldn’t have gotten this far if I listened to the advice some “experts” have told me. Being positive and making thoughtful decisions has always led to improvement in all aspects of my life. It is also important to make things happen. We all need to live in the moment and make those moments count. We also need to be mindful that our children are watching us and being proactive sets a great example for them to follow. Publisher’s Pick Our Over 40 and Fabulous winners were chosen by nominations received via email and through our website. One day I received a call and was asked if I would receive a nomination over the phone. I let the person on the other end know that I really needed to have the nomination in writing. That is when I learned that Nina Fishman did not "do computers" but wanted to nominate herself and husband, Herman for the Over 40 and Fabulous contest. Shortly thereafter, I received their photo and nomination in the mail. The act of using regular mail to send in the nomination was simple and refreshing at the same time – in this electronic world, the hand written nomination stood out. Nina and Herman have been married for 60 years, raised three children who significantly contribute to their community, and have seven grandchildren, in school or working toward their education. They have been honored over the years for their community endeavors. For their obvious ability to focus on what is truly important, I have named them as my Publisher's Pick for the 2011 Over 40 and Fabulous contest. —Sherri Adair, Publisher

Traveling with Summer Allergies If you have allergies or asthma, chances are they’re always with you, even when you travel. To ensure that your next trip is as relaxing as possible, take the following precautions before you depart:
CARS, BUSES AND TRAINS Common allergens like mites and molds can lurk in the carpeting, upholstery and ventilation systems of vehicles. Before beginning a roadtrip, turn on the air conditioner or heater and open the windows for at least 10 minutes before getting in the car.
AIRPLANES If you have food allergies, be cautious when eating airline food. Make sure to carry your portable, injectable epinephrine in case you have a reaction while in flight. If you have a painful sinus or ear infection, take a short-acting oral decongestant or use a nasal spray decongestant one hour before takeoff. In flight, sip liquids, swallow often and chew gum to decrease any pain.
HOTELS Ask if there are allergy-proof rooms available. If you are sensitive to molds, request a sunny, dry room away from areas near indoor pools. If you have allergies to any animals, ask about the hotel’s pet policy and request a room that has been pet-free. People who are allergic to dust mites may want to bring their own dust-proof, zippered covers for pillows and mattresses, or personal bedding.
VISITING FAMILY AND FRIENDS Animal allergens found in a pets’ dander, saliva or urine can sometimes be a problem, even if the pet has been put outside or removed from the room. It takes months before the allergic residue of an indoor pet no longer causes symptoms, so it’s best to avoid staying in the homes of family or friends whose pets trigger your allergy symptoms.
CAMPING Camping can increase your contact with outdoor pollen as well as your chances for encountering bees, yellow jackets and wasps. Avoid camping during high pollen seasons, always have appropriate medications, and carry injectable epinephrine to treat reactions to stinging insects. Most of all, be aware of any changes in your environment that may affect your allergies or asthma. Bon Voyage!

Facelift vs. Minilift
“Can I just have a mini-lift or do I need a full facelift?” Facelift techniques have been around for many years. Throughout this time, the evolution of the procedure has been significant. Initially, it was not uncommon for the patient to be hospitalized and on strict bed rest for several days. Much of this was due to the fact that older techniques resulted in more bleeding and swelling. This required prolonged dressings and drains. Another downfall with early lifts was an incomplete correction of the aging or sagging of the skin–as only the skin, and not the underlying muscles and ligaments, were treated. The two major advances in face-lifting were understanding of the role of the ligamentous layer (termed the SMAS) to support a more substantial, longer lasting lift and controlling the bleeding with special instrumentation. For the traditionalists, these techniques were not readily embraced because treating the SMAS required more skill and time and newer instruments were not always welcomed. For those who embraced these advancements, we owe a great deal of credit for developing the most significant and lasting facelift, commonly termed the SMAS lift or deep plane facelift … what many of my patients refer to as a full facelift. Utilizing modern instrumentation and understanding the SMAS ligament has enabled specialists in facial plastic surgery to create the most significant amount of lifting with the longest lasting results while maintaining a very natural appearance. The procedure is more involved and therefore requires more healing time than a “mini-lift.” The usual “downtime” for the procedure is 10 to 14 days until the patient feels comfortable with their public appearance. This is primarily due to swelling. Bleeding is drastically reduced when the surgeon uses a laser-like scalpel. The patient has a very important role in the healing process and end result of their facelift. It is imperative that the patient refrains from taking any blood thinners, including alcohol, and discontinue the use of caffeine, nicotine and strenuous physical activity around the time of surgery to avoid causing more swelling and bruising. The payoff is substantial for the compliant patient that elects this procedure as their results would be undoubtedly more rejuvenating and again, longer lasting. The level of activity enjoyed by today’s younger cosmetic patients has widely popularized less invasive procedures such as the mini-lift. The principles are similar. However, the amount of lifting and the longevity of the results are oftentimes much less than a true SMAS lift. The amount of loose tissue that is corrected is less, therefore the result is less bruising and swelling and a slightly shorter period of “downtime.” Patients feel comfortable with their public appearance in a few days to one week and need to take the same pre- and postoperative precautions as a SMAS facelift. The mini-lift can be done under a local anesthetic which is appealing to many patients but most elect for a general anesthetic. The key for choosing the right procedure for you is to understand the results that are achieved from both procedures and the amount of time you are willing to devote to your recovery. In summary, the
traditional SMAS lift is safe as long as the patient refrains from blood thinners, caffeine, nicotine and straining. The results are more significant and longer lasting. The patient requires a general anesthetic and approximately 10 to 14 days of healing time. The mini-lift is also safe with slightly less downtime (a few to several days), but may require a tuck up sooner than a SMAS facelift. The mini-lift can be performed under a local anesthetic with less cost. Knowing these factors will help the patient and the surgeon choose the right procedures for each individual’s needs.

CYCLING SAFETY TIPS
BUYING THE RIGHT BICYCLE
It is important to ride a bike that is the right size. In addition, consider the following recommendations: The bicycle should not be too big or complicated. You should be able to place the balls of your feet on the ground when sitting on the seat. The bicycle should have a bell or horn.
BUYING THE RIGHT HELMET Although helmets can cost between $13 and $50, they can save money by possibly preventing a visit to the emergency room. When shopping for a helmet, make sure it meets the following requirements: The helmet should be approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Approved helmets meet stringent safety standards. The helmet should fit your adolescent’s head so that when the straps are snug, the helmet does not move around on the head. Some helmets are multi-sport, which can be used for in-line-skating, skateboarding, bicycling, or other wheel sports. Helmets that specifically are called “bicycle helmets” are designed only for that sport. Helmets come in many sizes and varieties, including many infant sizes.
PROPER HELMET WEAR Helmets come with sponge pads that adjust to fit the head. A properly-fitted helmet should meet the following requirements: • The helmet should fit snug, not moving on the head. • The front edge of the helmet should be two finger widths above the eyebrows. • Front and back straps of the helmet should form a V just below the ear. • Front straps should be vertical and the rear straps should be flat. • The chin strap should be snug when you open your mouth (one finger should fit between the chin and chin strap when the mouth is closed).
ROAD RULES Consider the following traffic and road rules: • Stop before riding into traffic from a driveway, sidewalk, parking lot, or other street. • Look left, right, and left again to check for cars. • If the road is clear, enter. • Ride on the far right of the road, with traffic. • Ride so cars can see you, wearing brightly colored clothes, especially at night. • Obey all traffic signals and stop signs. • Look back and yield to traffic coming from behind before turning left. • Ride bicycles in single file. • Look for uneven pavement or other surface problems.
SPECIAL NOTE Avoid riding your bicycle, in-line skates, or skateboard during non-daylight hours or during bad weather. If you ride at night, make sure your bicycle has a headlight, flashing taillight, and reflectors.

How to Choose a Cosmetic Surgeon Q: What’s the first thing I should look for when searching for a QUALIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON? You need to find out if the surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only board certification in the cosmetic field recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. There are many other boards but often a doctor just needs to send them a check to get that certificate on their wall!! A qualified plastic surgeon must have at least 5 years of general surgery training and a minimum of 2 years of plastic surgery training. Many cosmetic surgeons have done no training in general or plastic surgery but the law allows them to practice in our specialty field. Look for the logo, if the surgeon you’re seeing doesn’t have it on his letterhead or business card, keep looking. IT’S A BUYER BEWARE SITUATION!!
Q: What should I ask the doctor regarding my surgery? First ask “am I a good candidate for this procedure?” What are the risks of complications with this procedure? Make sure the surgeon has a full physical history on you and what medications you’re taking. You should ask what your recovery will entail, as well as how would a post operative complication be handled. Make sure to tell your surgeon if you have any trips/vacations planned and if it is okay to travel while recovering. Also, ask to see before and after photos.
Q: Should I be concerned if the doctor wants to do the surgery in his/her office? You should be somewhat concerned. The surgeon should have privileges at the main hospital. If the surgeon has his/her own operating room in their office, it should be accredited by a nationally or state recognized accrediting agency, or is it state licensed or Medicare certified. If their operating room is not, then do not do the surgery with that doctor. Beware, there is something wrong if the surgeon does not have hospital privileges.
Q: How do you feel about traveling to foreign countries for the purpose of having plastic surgery done? A: I feel it is not a wise decision. First of all, how would you know if the surgeon is properly credentialed? You would probably have no way of knowing if the facility they use is properly credentialed or safe. I strongly suggest you have your procedure performed close to home.

He also was the recipient of the Gold Scalpal Award, an award given to one surgeon in the country once a year. Dr. James W. Davis, Jr. is the son of the late Dr. James W. Davis, Sr., a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon from Chattanooga, TN. Dr. James Davis, Sr. was one of the first Plastic Surgeons of our generation and had not only the first, but the largest training center in the country specializing in treating burns, cleft palates, facial deformities, all reconstruction, and all cosmetic surgeries. Dr. James W. Davis, Jr. was so inspired by his father’s surgical talents and his heartwarming outreach to under privileged children and young adults, that he went on to become a plastic surgeon as well. While finishing his surgical residencies, Dr. James Davis, Jr. went on many of these trips with his father. Within a two week time frame, they would perform as many corrective surgeries as they could. Changing the lives of many children and young adults, who struggled with facial deformities. The two doctors were featured on several television segments in the 1980’s, documentaries dedicated solely to the countless, and heart-warming surgical cases Dr. James Davis, Sr. and Dr. James Davis, Jr. were afforded to have. Dr. James W. Davis, Jr. is located in Atlanta Georgia near St. Joseph’s Hospital. Dr. Davis has been in private practice for over 21 years. Due to his impeccable training and education as well as the experiences he had with his father, Dr. James Davis, Sr., Dr. Davis is considered an expert in the Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery field by Jezebel Magazine, The Atlantan Magazine and Best Self Magazine. He specializes in all Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgeries. His expert “eye” in his field also awards him tremendous success with not only surgeries, but all facial injections as well. Including Botox, Juviderm, Restalyn, Radiesse, Sculptra, Fat Injections as well as laser resurfacing.

Breathing Life Into An Old Knee? It is amazing how many doctors are not aware or do not discuss the many available treatments for degenerated or arthritic joints. Simply put, the patient receives a prescription from one of many pain medications, then a corticosteroid injection and finally surgery. Next to Cardiovascular disease, Osteoarthritis is increasingly one of the most debilitating diseases out there today due to longer life expectancy, poor health habits, overweight, imbalance of joint function and overstrain. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the degeneration of the joint cartilage and bone which causes pain, swelling and limited mobility. This, in turn, negatively affects almost every aspect of life for a person suffering from this type of disease. When you think about it, we rely on our knees for just about everything, from climbing stairs and hopping into the bath tub to dancing the night away and chasing our kids around. Supartz treatment, commonly referred to as joint fluid therapy, employs a highly purified sodium hyaluronate which is very similar to synovial fluid. Synovial fluid surrounds your joints and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Research has shown that in some instances, increased synovial fluid in the joint may actually trigger healing by increasing the production of Chondrocytes, which are responsible for the production of cartilage!

PAIN FREE What We Help With: • Arthritic Joint Pain • Knee Pain • Degenerated Discs • Hip & S/I Joint Pain • Numbness & Radiating Pain • TMJ, Bursitis & Tendonitis
I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... I could sleep better, walk better and continue to work...Total Health Care is the only place I will go ever again.” —Julie W.
What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy • Non-Toxic Non-Surgical Pain Solutions That Work
Although several joint fluid therapies are available today, Supartz has a couple of things going for it that separate it from the pack: First, because Supartz has no synthetic component, the likelihood of an allergic reaction is extremely low. Further, Supartz has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, the active ingredient that makes these types of treatments so effective. So, why have you not been told about this potentially wonderful treatment? This question is often posed and the answer is this: An orthopedic surgeon goes to school to learn surgery. Also in most cases, because of Insurance & Medicare requirements, that surgeon may not operate on a knee until he/she has attempted several non-invasive alternatives such as steroidal medications, corticosteroid injections and physical therapy. It is possible that the reason so many surgeons go through the basic steps outlined above and skip even attempting Supartz; is to qualify the patient for surgery. Keep in mind that in the United States, we do 11 times more knee surgeries than in Europe. Why? Because as one non-surgical European orthopedist said, “We in Europe focus on regeneration of the joint vs surgery.” Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover joint fluid therapy treatment. Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.
