from the publisher My Best List Isn’t it a bummer when you discover something you really like and then suddenly you can’t find it anymore? A favorite lipstick that is discontinued or a delicious dish at a favorite restaurant that suddenly disappears from the menu. Why does this happen? Could it be you were the only one who thought so highly of these things or perhaps, it is a conspiracy to keep us from enjoying the good things we discover...hahaha. The items you will see each month on My Best List are chosen because they are things I personally enjoy. That is the only criteria. I share My Best List with you because, perhaps you will like them too and they will (hopefully) be ours to enjoy for a long, long time! For web links to My Best List items go to our home page at www.bestselfconnect.com

All the best

Sherri Adair, Publisher, sadair@bestselfatlanta.com Cobb Salad Lovers Rejoice! The Cobb Salad from Nancy G’s Café is healthy and absolutely delicious. The veggies are super fresh and something about the way they are chopped and presented with the fresh meats and cheeses makes it visually delightful. It comes with mixed field greens, green bell pepper, diced tomato, onion (which I usually say, hold!), cucumber, egg, cheese, ham, turkey and whatever dressing you like on the side. I enjoy the red wine vinaigrette with a little fresh buttermilk ranch. Nancy G’s Café casual, neighborhood restaurant is the perfect laid back place to enjoy this healthy and filling dish. Skinny Cocktail from The Big Ketch The Pomegranate Mojito is the perfect “skinny cocktail” for hot summer days or nights! A splash of Bacardi rum, fresh lime and POM juice is only 124 calories. Combine this with a great patio and some music and you have a fabulous recipe for a relaxing summer evening. Three Dot Skirt/Shorts The Three Dot shorts with shirring detail are a must have staple for your summer wardrobe. Great for work or casual, you can dress them up or down. Comfortable and classic, I love mine and found them at Veronica’s Attic in Sandy Springs. The cost is $72 at www.shopthreedots.com Enhancing Glycolic Body Wash Your skin will tingle from head to toe with this body wash from Institut’ DERMed. This product is formulated with Shea Butter and Glycolic Acid to soften skin and clear away rough patches. This product is a one of a kind body treatment using glycolic acid traditionally in products only for the face. Like the facial product it aids in smoothing rough skin and restoring glow all over. It was specially formulated by Lynn Ross and sold exclusively at Institut DERMed. The cost is $58.

Merrell Sandals I love my Merrells! I have four or five pairs but these are by far my faves! I can wear them for hours and even made it through the day at Six Flags with my 12-year-old son. Some of my most memorable experiences in life came from just taking a chance regardless of the outcome. Whether it’s overcoming a fear, finally attaining that weight loss goal or just trying something new, taking chances can enrich your life and expand the possibilities of what you can achieve. If you are looking for a new adventure, head over to Banning Mills for a zip line tour (p. 20) that will definitely get your heart pumping. In this issue, we delve into some of Atlanta’s healthiest companies who find unique ways to challenge their employees to get physical (p. 42). Finally, we spotlight two amazing Atlantans, Kate Atwood from Kate’s Club (p. 35) and world-champion swimmer Sabir Muhammad (p. 66), who overcame hardships in their childhood to go on and help kids do the same.

Best Self asked: We take our fish oil capsules Faves! daily! What’s your favorite supplement?

Sandy J.: My favorites are Xocai Healthy Chocolate. One of the chocolates has probiotic in it. Another has Omega 3’s, not from fish oil but from algae/plankton, so they bypass the fish. Great for people with fish allergies. No caffeine, dairy, wheat, low glycemic sugar (does not raise your blood sugar), and kosher. How great is that! Denise U.: Pre-natal vitamins! Great for skin, hair and nails! Brian J.: Fish oil - Awesome for maintaining the brain, skin, hair, and even fat loss, BUT! Beware, as I’ve read reports of vast number of commercial capsule products contain rancid (spoiled) fish oil! I personally use a lemon-flavored liquid from Whole Foods. (more expensive, but fresh!) Michelle G.: I like ground flax seed… and I put it in fruit smoothies or sprinkled on greek yogurt with some berries. Brian J.: Oh yeah, my favorite = vanilla protein shake made with unsweetened almond milk, walnuts, raw pumpkin seeds, and aloe vera gel. (Sometimes I add a couple scoops of Green Vibrance too!) Bruce S.: Juice Plus Whole Food Supplements! Available in capsules or deeeelicious chews We want to hear from you! Method: Rinse quinoa in a fine sieve until water runs clear, then drain and transfer to a medium pot. Add 1 cup water and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to medium low and simmer until water is absorbed, 15 to 20 minutes. Set aside off the heat for 5 minutes; uncover and fluff with a fork. Stir in parsley, pine nuts, lemon zest and salt.

Explore new ways to get more out of life Adventure Through The Trees By Jeyme Colodne The rope bridge under my feet sways and creaks as I step across it and even the reassuring smiles from my zip line guides, Sean and Morgan, aren’t making me feel any better. My grip on the rope tightens, a sweat breaks out on my brow and my heart thumps in my chest as I silently instruct myself to keep moving. I am walking high above the parking lot of Historic Banning Mills on my way to begin the first leg of its zip line eco-canopy tour. The idea sounded fantastic an hour ago: gliding through the trees, the breeze in my hair, enjoying breathtaking views of the forest below. Right now though, about 50 feet above the ground, I’m having a hard time remembering why I thought it would be fun. My mind races back to all the safety instructions given by Sean. He went over several rules with a smile and hearty laugh, encouraging my group to “have fun and listen to our instructions at all times,” as he and the other guides handed out the harnesses and helmets that would keep us safe and attached to the ropes.

The guide expertly attached my ropes to a pulley that will lead me across the first zip line to the platform below. Taking his advice to sit down in my harness before jumping, I do so and before I can give it another thought, I leap off into the air.

The initial jump shocks me, but as I open my eyes I feel slightly weightless as I fly down the rope. The ride is over in a matter of seconds and I’ve landed safely on the platform before I can blink. Although I have completed the first leg, I’m not sure I’m ready to tackle the Screaming Eagle (a zip line that can take you over 60 miles an hour!) or the 600 foot long Sky Trek Bridge. Luckily, Historic Banning Mills offers a variety of tours for everyone ranging from two to five hours. With a steady platform under my feet, and the first jump under my belt, I’m definitely feeling braver and ready to tackle the rest of my zip line tour. Reaching the end of the rope bridge, I realize that this is only the start of my journey, and try to smile back at Morgan as he waits for me.“Transfer one,” I say, remembering Sean’s instruction about how to communicate that I am ready to be attached to the zip line.“Transfer one,” he replies as I hook the first of two crab-claws to the thick rope. “You’ll do great!” he exclaims, as he urges me on. I have to admit his positive attitude is contagious and I find myself grinning. I can do this! As I approach my first jump, my heart speeds up. Don’t. Look. Down.

Q

Can a benign cyst in my breast become cancerous?

Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop nearly anywhere in the body. They present as a lump in the breast and should be evaluated with an ultrasound to determine if the lesion is truly a benign simple cyst with a smooth lining and a fluid-filled center. Simple cysts are not cancerous and need no further workup. Complex cysts differ from simple cysts in that they have a solid component, septations or debris within the fluid. Solid lesions and complex cysts warrant a biopsy or aspiration to determine Tracy McElveen, MD if the lesion is a cancerous process. A woman diagnosed with a simple breast cyst should not Radiotherapy Centers of Georgia assume that a new breast lesion is also a simple cyst, but should have proper evaluation of each new lesion as well as continued monitoring of the known simple cyst. Simple benign cysts can change over time and may be bigger, smaller or even disappear on mammography.

Q

Can obesity affect fertility? How?

We constantly hear about the effect of the obesity epidemic. 30-50% of Americans are overweight and the effect on fertility is dramatic. Obesity may be associated with polycystic ovary syndrome [PCOS] resulting in abnormal menstrual cycles and ovulation problems. Male hormone elevations seen with PCOS can interfere with implantation as well. So obesity can result in ovulation problems as well as implantation. To make matters worse, once you conceive, if you are overweight, the chance of miscarriage can be much higher. Obesity also affects male fertility resulting in abnormal sperm tests. The good news is that weight loss often restores normal fertility.

The fall ragweed season seems to get worse every year. What can I do to reduce the effects of ragweed hay fever?

Staying inside during early morning hours, running the air conditioner to filter inside air and showering after spending time outdoors can help keep ragweed pollen at bay. Several over the counter antihistamines have recently become available to treat hay fever symptoms as well as nasal saline rinses. But when you still find yourself suffering throughout the ragweed season, it’s time to see an allergist who can prescribe long-term solutions to fit your particular needs. Carol A. Q

What are some preventative measures men can take to avoid a

decrease in sex drive?

The most common causes of a decreased libido in a male are low testosterone and medication side effects. Both moderate exercise and quality sleep have been associated with boosting testosterone levels. Also, since low testosterone levels are more common in overweight patients, weight management is paramount to maximizing levels. Antidepressants are the most common type of medication implicated in reducing libido. Reducing negative emotional stress and excessive physical stress can only help one’s libido. All in all, the best thing a man can do is maintain a healthy lifestyle and quality relationship.

Sometimes my knees make a grinding or popping sound. Is this harmful?

The sound usually comes from the friction between your joints, ligaments or bones. Most of the time it is benign, however if it causes any pain, discomfort, redness or swelling, you should see your doctor for further evaluation. Your doctor could recommend a knee X-ray or MRI depending on the exam or clinical suspicions to look for arthritis, ligament or meniscus injury.

Vision Therapy for Pediatrics Dr. Takeia J. Locke received her Doctorate of Optometry from Nova Southeastern University. While in school, she discovered that she can combine her desire to encourage children to pursue excellence in education with her passion for Optometry by pursuing a specialty in Pediatrics and Vision Therapy. She completed a competitive residency at Nova and decided that her focus would be on treating children, athletes, and special needs patients to ensure their vision does not negatively impact their lifestyle and learning. The fact is as much as 80% of early learning begins with a child’s eyes. Therefore, it is her goal to see that their foundation for learning is not delayed due to undiagnosed vision disorders.

How is pediatric eye care different from other eye care services? Pediatric eye care requires special equipment and procedures, and extra training on the part of the doctor. Optometrists that specialize in pediatrics have to stay current and watch for diseases that show up in childhood like Strabismus, Amblyopia, and binocular vision disorders.

What are the most common vision disorders among children? Amblyopia and Strabismus are common and often untreated. There are also more subtle disorders like Convergence Insufficiency and Ocular Motor Dysfunction that are difficult to detect. If left untreated, they can have a grave impact on a child’s learning.

What symptoms do children with vision difficulties typically show? Some of the common symptoms in children (and adults) with these disorders include: frequently losing place when reading or doing math, falling asleep easily when reading, covering one eye to read, poor attention span, headaches, poor reading comprehension, and double vision. There are many other symptoms that an optometrist will assess. It is important for children to have their eyes tested yearly to ensure healthy, comfortable vision.

What happens when a pair of glasses doesn’t solve the problem? Follow up with an optometrist trained to diagnose other underlying disorders. It is very important to determine if a child is not wearing glasses because they don’t like them, they don’t need them, or if there is another problem that has not been addressed.

What should a parent look for in a doctor who offers pediatric eye care? The doctor should be aware of the diagnosis and management of common pediatric eye disorders and diseases. He or she should also be very comfortable with children and be able to think outside of the box. Often times subjective testing can be done, but we may have to figure out another way to get an answer. When we cannot rely on a child’s response, it is important to have tools in the office to do objective testing. Most of all, the child should be comfortable with the doctor. Once a doctor earns a child’s trust, the exam is generally quite easy. Dr. Takeia J. Locke

The Benefits of Sound Therapy What is Sound Therapy? Sound Therapy operates on the most basic tenet of science that everything is energy, and that energy is always fluctuating and interacting. We are all fields of energy, in a constant state of fluctuating vibration. Sound is a naturally occurring phenomenon. Human beings typically hear sound between the ranges of 20 cycles per second (20 Hz) to 20,000 cycles per second (20 kHz), although sound as a vibration exists far above and below that range. Sound energy is used as a therapy to induce deep states of relaxation, and to introduce frequencies that are missing in the body. There are very effective frequencies of sound that will induce physical, mental, and emotional healing. But it is the intent of the sound therapist, using the tools of their trade, which have the most healing effect. Jonathan Goldman, sound healing pioneer, proposed this formula: frequency + intention = healing. A sound therapist moves with high intentions of healing into your discomfort and gently lifts those vibrations with their tools and their intentions.

Tools of the Trade Each sound therapist has a variety of unique tools to choose from including: crystal singing bowls, Tibetan metal singing bowls, tuning forks, bells, Tingshas and their voice. The tones created by these instruments are not just heard by the ear, but you also feel them in the cells of your body. Singing bowls are played in a similar fashion to the wine goblets we played as kids. Instead of running your finger around the rim, a wooden or rubber striker is used to play the edge of the bowls. This creates the magnificent sound you hear. The size of the bowl does not necessarily determine its note, although, the larger bowls produce lower octaves and notes. Also, the larger bowls are more reverberant and the tone will linger longer. Bowls may be played directly on the body or near the body. Both methods are effective and extremely relaxing. Like the singing bowls, tuning forks are calibrated to specific frequencies. They are played by gently tapping two tuning forks together and holding them near the body. Occasionally, the stem of the tuning fork may be placed at precise points on the body sending the healing vibration directly into the body. Sound therapy will introduce you to deep states of relaxation, and those states of relaxation foster health, good feelings, and positive thinking. Sound therapy is the perfect antidote to the fast-paced, adrenaline-charged 21st century.

The Many Benefits of Dancing! You’ve seen it on TV. You’ve been thinking about it. Come in to a dance studio for a fun, unique workout AND add a spark to your love life! Experience Dancing! DANCING: A ROMANTIC ALTERNATIVE

The romantic properties of dance are a secret that all good dancers enjoy: Men feel confident when they recognize which dance is being played and have the ability to walk across the dance floor and ask a lady to dance. Women will enjoy being asked to dance knowing that they have mastered the grace, poise, styling, and important following skills of a trained dancer. Couples can add the romantic skills that come with the holding, touching, and moving to the music that dancing provides. Single people can meet new friends as dancing provides a natural ice breaker and becomes a common denominator in any crowd.

DANCING: THE IDEAL EXERCISE

Exercising by jogging (outdoors or on a treadmill) is an unattractive alternative for many people. Dancing is a mild form of aerobic workout and dance lessons make exercise a fun and enjoyable social event any night of the week. Your “dance workout” is beneficial in many ways: • Olympic athletes often include dance in their training to sharpen control, agility, speed, and balance. • Dance contributes to good posture and body alignment. • Dance encourages gentle stretching. • Dance increases your flexibility and stamina. • Dance benefits your cardiovascular system as you swing and sway from hips to shoulders.

How do I get started? Getting started is easy. The first step is to schedule a free introductory lesson with one of our trained instructors. During that lesson, your instructor will determine your current level and recommend an appropriate course for you to continue.

Can I really learn to dance? Yes. Dancing is as easy as walking once you are taught how by an Arthur Murray expert. We teach simple, basic elements, from which the steps are derived. Hundreds of thousands of people have been successfully trained in Arthur Murray Dance Studios. There is no age limit. Our oldest students are over 70. The youngest are usually in their early teens.

How long will it take? The length of your course will depend on how many dances you want to learn and how proficient you wish to become in each dance. However, you will be able to dance after your first lesson.

How much do lessons cost? Tuition varies, depending on a number of factors e.g., how good you want to be, what dances you want to learn, and your dance schedule.

Your first lesson is $25.00. After that lesson, your instructor will recommend a program and will be able to answer any questions, so you will have the knowledge to make an informed choice.

What should I wear? At our studio, we want your lessons to be relaxing and fun. There is no enforced dress code of any sort for our students from the ankles up. We do recommend some shoes appropriate for dancing, however. If you do not have any dance shoes, please wear a shoe that doesn’t grip the floor heavily (boots, large tread shoes) or is a sandal/flip-flop without any heel support (you will be taking steps backwards, which will cause your foot to slip out).

Do I need a partner? No. We offer group and one-on-one lessons. During your one-on-one private lessons, you will receive personalized instruction that will help you achieve your goals in dancing. Your instructor will spend the time necessary on technique, styling, and general dance improvement. An up-to-date record of everything you have learned will also be kept as part of your instruction. A tailored program at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio is all you need to turn your dancing AND your romantic life around.

The Secret to Getting a Toned, Beautiful Body: The Evolution of an Art Six pack abs, definition that shows the outline of every muscle, legs that pop, a body that turns heads the minute it enters the room. You’ve seen these beautifully toned, tanned bodies on the covers of magazines, on the tv and big screen but how can you get that body? What’s the secret to looking as beautiful as the models of a bikini calendar!

First a brief introductory to the sport of bodybuilding In a sport that has evolved from the days of “Arnold”, new categories like physique, figure and bikini have kept the sport exciting and participation has continued to increase. Like the popular bikini category for women, the male physique category has a lot of appeal because everyone wants to look great in a swimsuit.

What’s the difference between all the divisions? We’ve witnessed years of both men and women bodybuilders getting bigger and bigger. The sport of bodybuilding originated with the development of muscle into a symmetrical piece of art. While there are those who continue to aspire to the bodybuilding stage with the biggest and best muscle; the sport itself has evolved to also include physique, figure and bikini divisions. Bodybuilders are judged on a balance of size, symmetry and muscularity. The idea behind Male Physique is to have an athletic/ model look with a big back and tapered waist and an overall aesthetically pleasing look to the eye. The men wear board shorts in this category. Female Physique strives to bring back the look of Rachel McLish & Cory Everson; a more feminine look with a tiny waistline, a muscular look but still pleasant to look at in a posing suit. Symmetry, shape, proportion, muscle tone, poise and beauty flow are all taken into consideration when these women are on the stage. Figure Competitors take their look one step further towards a more feminine look with a smaller degree of muscularity than the female physique competitors and have separation but no striations. These ladies have overall muscle tone with shapely lines, overall firmness but are not excessively lean. They will have a tiny waist, healthy appearance, make up and good skin tone. They wear the two-piece posing suit with heels but their suits are embellished with swarvorski crystals and they wear jewelry. Figure competitions appeal most to women who want to compete in a body competition, but wish to avoid Fitness shows’ additional athletic and creative demands (for the routines round), or bodybuilding’s demands for heavy muscle mass. But it is the Bikini Competitors that have drawn the greatest amount of attention in recent years because most women secretly desire to look great in a bikini that is embellished and tiny but totally flattering to their bodies. In addition, they want to walk in those high heels all tanned and made up, enter a room and have everyone say “WOW!” It doesn’t have to be just for the models anymore; it can be you. You don’t have to take it to the stage, but you can look like you could. And if you decide you want to put it out there on the stage; with numerous organizations, a wide variety of height and weight classes and classifications from teenage and novice to super heavyweight and super grand masters there is truly something for everyone.

What does it take to get there? It takes commitment and a good plan. Do your research. Take a look at who is taking his clients to new heights and you will find, Personal Trainer and Posing Coach Steve Payne, co-owner of House of Payne Personal Training. Steve is a certified personal trainer and will be taking his test for certification by the IAFS at the end of July. The International Association of Fitness Sciences (IAFS) is designed to certify trainers at an international level and is recognized by the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB), The National Physique Committee (NPC), The World Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (WAAAM), The International Chiropractors Association (ICA) and Judson University. He is one of the top experts in competition training in Atlanta and Georgia. “The presentation is the most important factor in winning in this sport. You can look great but if you can’t show it on stage, then someone else is going home with the trophy.” Steve has competed in numerous shows himself in the past. Now retired from competition, he knows what it takes to win and his expertise includes the competition training program plus being able to show others the adjustments necessary to make their posing better, mentally preparing his competitors and strategically planning his clients’ competition schedule in order to help them achieve their goals. On Saturdays, Steve can be found at House of Payne Personal Training conducting FREE posing practice for bodybuilding, physique, figure and bikini competitors. We welcome any competitor to come out and get practice on our stage. It helps the competitors gain confidence, it promotes and encourages the sport, and it raises the level of competition.

But how does this help me? Train with the trainer who invest in his clients, commit to the plan he gives you and you will have the toned beautiful body you always wished for. That’s the secret. For more information on our expert connection you may contact Steve Payne at Steve@trainwithpayne.com or call him at 678.641.9189.

Kate’s Club

Making a difference in the lives of Atlanta’s youth By Jeyme Colodne

W

hen Kate Atwood started Kate’s Club in 2003, a special program that helps children cope with the loss of a parent or sibling, she never anticipated how far it would go and how many lives she would touch. The idea was inspired from a personal loss Atwood experienced, when, at the age of 12 she lost her mother to breast cancer. While volunteering as a counselor at a bereavement camp in Virginia, she was able to see the

positive impact that could be made when people of similar experiences came together. Starting a non-profit at the age of 23, Atwood had very little funds and hardly any experience; however she was determined to make it work. “The cards were definitely stacked against me,” she recalls, “I had no money and this was my first experience starting a non-profit business. So, it was important to surround myself and surround the organization with people who could help build it.”

Photos courtesy of: Kate's Club

Atwood found the support she needed and the organization began to grow. “That is the magic of what you see today,” she explains, “Kate’s Club today is a simple recipe of a lot of hard work, a lot of dedication, and a lot of people’s commitment and involvement. It is truly a product of both the kids who have been a part of it and the community who has built it for them.” She recalls one of the very first programs that they held at a bowling alley where six kids and six volunteers came together for a day of fun. “Many people don’t know that we actually tried to have a program before that. Boston Consulting Group lent us their suite at Phillips Arena for the circus,” she remembers, “It was perfect for us to launch Kate’s Club. But when the day came, we didn’t have any families signed up yet. That was tough, but we pushed ahead and one month later we had our first families. It hasn’t stopped growing since.” Atwood has appeared on everything from CNN to The Today Show spreading the message of hope that surrounds Kate’s Club. She feels it is important for children who are grieving to learn that they are not alone www.bestselfconnect.com

and that it is ok to ask others for help. “It’s so great that the platform to raise awareness for grief support exists today. Ten years ago or so, it didn’t,” she says, “Many people in our culture have had to mourn alone and that can be so tough on a spirit, especially a young spirit.” Today, Kate’s Club continues to spread its message of support and help children and their families cope with the loss of a loved one. While Atwood has recently moved on to a new opportunity as the Executive Director of the Arby’s Foundation, she still remains active and involved with Kate’s Club. Atwood explains that the organization is in the hands of great leadership under Executive Director, Emily Hawkins and a board of directors. “Kate’s Club is still a personal passion of mine within which I remain connected and active,” she says, “The energy I receive from the kids at Kate’s Club inspires me to continue to grow and heal and always remember that the greatest gift you can give yourself is to help someone else.” On August 19, the organization will host its eighth annual Cabaret (see details p. 61). This is a chance for supporters in the community to come out and enjoy a night of dancing, food and fun all for an amazing cause. “One great thing about celebrating Kate’s Club annually at the Cabaret is that it allows us all to take a moment and look back at the year and be proud of the growth and the impact we have had,” says Atwood. “It’s a night to celebrate how far we have come and to get charged up for the work that lies ahead.” BEST SELF ATLANTA

More from Kate… What inspires you? People. Life is so much about who you surround yourself with along the way. I often think by losing the most important person early in life, (my mom), I’ve realized early on just how important and impactful it is to have good loving people around you every step of the way.

What is your favorite part of your job with Kate’s Club? I’m an entrepreneur, so my favorite part of my job is that I get to carry around big visions and see them realized through my work. Although I’m not an artist in the traditional sense, I like to think I create societal art in the form of communities. Nothing is more satisfying to me than bringing people together, people who may not otherwise ever cross paths, but because of the community that has been created for them, their lives are forever changed.

What challenges you? Life. Life is challenging. People everywhere seek fulfillment out of life, and to achieve that, no matter who you are or where you live, that journey is a challenge. But a good challenge. And I think if people took on that challenge with others, rather than alone, it would be a better journey.

What are some of the events and activities that kids experience when they join Kate’s Club? One of the things that makes Kate’s Club so special is our dynamic program offerings. We have social club outings where the kids go have fun adventures out in the Atlanta community; we have therapeutic support programs at our Clubhouse, we even have an overnight camp each summer at Camp Twin Lakes.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? This is hard for me to answer because I have received such great advice about life and about career. But I think in all facets of life the best piece of advice is “you are not alone” – whether starting a company, overcoming

an illness, or facing adversity, we aren’t meant to do any of it alone. A great quote I heard once was, “The difference between being ordinary and extraordinary is that the extraordinary ask for help.”

How do you spend your down time and how do you juggle such a busy schedule? This is all part of my journey. I can find myself so driven and passionate about my work that sometimes I don’t leave time for down-time. But I’m getting better about knowing my limits and making sure I build in time for me. I believe you can have it all, but you can’t necessarily have it all at once. So you just have to take life one day at a time, and do what wakes you up excited and lets you go to bed exhausted.

What do you consider some of your greatest achievements both professionally and personally? Personally, my achievements are really found in my friends. I have always had great friends in my life. They have loved me and supported me and kept me striving to be my best, even during difficult times. Professionally, I think the ultimate achievement was just taking the risk to start Kate’s Club. Everything that happened from that was a result of that first step. I didn’t appreciate it as much at the time, but now I really appreciate it, especially as I am taking the first step in my next endeavor.

What do you see as the keys to being your “best self”? I truly believe to be your best self, you have to take time to be a part of something bigger than yourself, and reach out to help others. When I was a motherless adolescent, I struggled in so many ways and my spirit suffered greatly from that loss. I never would have thought that by starting Kate’s Club and giving back to other kids who shared that similar loss would I connect with the happiness and healing that I have since. Now I truly believe my message to others is that your best self is found when you help others.

Yearly on-site biometric screenings and health assessments at no cost to the employee Physical activity and weight loss challenges Walking/running training groups Lunch and learn sessions for the employees Wellness coaching on-site Active Wellness committee Kaiser Permanente Run/Walk Event registration is covered by the employer Actively partner with vendors to bring healthy food options for snacks, lunches, etc.

How do you get people involved? We make sure that wellness programs are communicated at staff meetings, through e-mail, posters, flyers and word of mouth. We make sure wellness programs are emphasized as being important to the culture of Northwestern Benefit Corporation and Goodwin, Wright. The importance of health and wellness is stressed from leadership and is emphasized throughout the year. We also provide incentives for participating in wellness challenges and make participating in events such as the KP Corporate Challenge low or no cost to the employees. www.bestselfconnect.com

How have these health initiatives improved the lives of employees at your company? Our employees are able to be active participants in their personal health and wellness on a yearly basis during our health assessments and screenings and many have made lifestyle changes based on the information they have found out during these events. Many individuals have begun exercising more or eating healthier due to participation in challenges. How has participating in the Kaiser Permanente Run/Walk Event helped to promote wellness? Participating in this event provides the wellness committee with the opportunity to encourage physical activity and engage groups of people in “training” programs leading up to the walk/run. It is also a team building activity where individuals can pair up with co-workers and get in the habit of incorporating physical activity into their daily lives. What are the incentives given to employees to participate? Monetary incentives, gift cards, recognition at events and staff meetings. Do you measure the results in some way? We measure participation in the yearly health screenings and assessments. Aggregate results are also compared yearly to determine if improvements have been made. For challenges, we measure participation throughout the challenge along with one metric that directly relates to the challenge (steps walked, minutes exercised, weight loss, etc). We also look at evaluations from programs such as lunch and learns, coaching sessions, screenings, etc. What advice would you give to other companies looking to start a health initiative? Our advice to other companies would be to start slow. Have a conversation with senior leadership to make sure they are on-board and ask for their support when creating a plan for wellness programs. Create a working document that can act as your plan as the initiative takes shape. Comprehensive wellness programs are an ever-evolving process, so it is important to begin with programs that will engage a large number of your employees and build on that year after year to continuously change behavior. With health care costs rising and employee health on the decline, there is no better time than now to begin implementing these types of programs. Employers that are considering implementing an employee wellness program must also commit to a budget for these initiatives. There is no question that employee health and wellness is worth the investment. Companies that realize the importance of this investment and commit funds to wellness programs will achieve the largest return in the end. BEST SELF ATLANTA

ATLANTA’S HEALTHIEST COMPANIES

How has this health-conscious company improved the lives of its employees? We have several employees who have improved their lives by changing their health habits. We have success stories of employees who have stopped smoking and have remained smoke-free for over two years. Our biggest highlight is from two women who have lost a combined 230 pounds and have come off of their medications for high blood pressure and diabetes. Our employees are also healthier in that we have given them free flu shots, as well as all the other screenings we provide. Many employees are members of gyms that discounts are given to and use the gyms in our corporate headquarters. Verizon also showcases many employees who have had major weight loss and have changed their lives. Verizon helps to enrich its employees’ lives not only through healthy living, but giving back to their community as well. Is there a specific person in the company who champions these efforts? Our programs start from upper management. Our president and Area and Regional presidents all support and participate in our on-site fitness facilities and programs. However, we also have a team of “coaches” across the country that motivates all employees to participate in our wellness programs. We also have our own “Wellness Promoters” throughout the company who help us encourage the employees. These Wellness Promoters are employees who have succeeded in reaching their goals – whether it was running a 5K, losing 10% of their body weight and want to help others see that sometimes the biggest, hardest step is getting started.

GH&I Nominated by: Jo Ann Labbie, Chief Learning Officer Number of employees: <100 employees

Clients of GH&I include a wide spectrum of middle market businesses including corporations, closely-held businesses, partnerships, joint ventures, and startups; and estates, trusts, nonprofits and individuals. Explain what your company does to promote health and wellness. We have education sessions about nutritional health, emotional health, and fitness classes. We bring in nutritionists, trainers, healthy eating

specialists and coaches from the community to provide us knowledge in these areas. We have hired a fitness coach, Sandi Porter, to have a GH&I’s Losing It contest. Sandi was brought in due to her success with Gwinnett’s Losing It program. This contest is similar to a biggest loser contest though it takes it to a much deeper level where individuals have to write essays with goals, lessons learned, and hurdles overcome. We have fourteen participants and everyone is doing well in the program.

We are located right next to one of Atlanta’s finest fitness centers, Concourse Athletic Club. The company negotiated a discounted rate for their employees plus offers a $5 per visit up to ten visits per month reimbursement program. This arrangement helps with cost reduction yet requires the employees to have some skin in the game. GH&I works to GIVE, HOPE and INSPIRE our employees being involved with Health Matters at Work® a value-added program of Community Health Charities connecting employees with the valuable information regarding prevention of chronic disease, as well as managing chronic health conditions more effectively. In 2010, our Young Leaders Group had a volunteer day at the Summer Special Olympics helping participants in their sporting activities. We have a few employees involved in Teams in Training and GH&I is a proud supporter of their efforts. Is there a yearly event that your company sponsors and/or participates in? Every spring you will see a group of walkers participating in the Susan G. Komen Atlanta Race for the Cure at Atlantic Station. Every May we have a fun outing for our teammates at the Indian Hills Country Club. The employees get to select from golfing, tennis, or lounging poolside to enjoy their day in the sun. Team GH&I participates in the CPA Sports Softball league where they compete against other CPA firms throughout the summer. We spend a day every August giving back to our community with our Annual Community Service Day staining, painting, and cleaning up grounds at different venues like the Jerusalem House, Edgewood Gardens, Camp Twin Lakes, Piedmont Park, or local schools. Before flu season, we offer a Health Clinic to administer flu shots to employees and their families. How has this health-conscious company improved the lives of its employees? GH&I offers flexible scheduling, part-time working options, and an educational environment. We are located in an office complex that offers automotive care, dry cleaning delivery and shuttle services. We also acknowledge a need for continuous improvement and are open to new initiatives along the way. All of these help improve the busy lives of our employees. Is there a specific person in the company who champions these efforts? No. It is more of a team approach.

help them reach their weight loss goal. In August, we helped them prepare for the Corporate Challenge and in October, we matched the weight loss during the month and donated the same number of food products to our food drives; combining our weight loss challenge with our community initiatives. By the end of the year, we lost over 65,000 pounds.

Joint Pain More than a physical condition, joint pain can impact every area of a person’s life By Alison Broderick

ometimes we can take every day movement for granted. Walking in the park, going up and down stairs or simply sitting in your car can turn into a difficult experience if you are afflicted with joint pain. Although most common in elderly persons, joint pain is non-discriminating: it can affect anyone at any age. Known as arthralgia, pain in the joints can range from a slight ache to a debilitating pain and can be caused by a number of conditions. “Arthritis is the most common cause of chronic joint pain,” says David Goodman, MD, an orthopedic

surgeon specializing in joint reconstruction and sports medicine with Resurgens Orthopaedics. Other causes include acute joint injury, stiffness, inflammation, infection and instability.

Joint pain, whether tolerable or excruciating, is more than a physical ailment—ongoing pain can impact a person’s quality of life by making every day tasks or exercising more difficult. “Pain associated with swelling, mechanical symptoms, and/or loss of motion of the joint can be used as guidelines for when to see a physician,” says Jeffrey J. Kovacic, MD, board certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Center in Smyrna. “In the absence of injury, pain that worsens over time or persists for several days to a week despite modifying activities is also an indication to see your physician. Furthermore, pain associated with an acute injury should also be evaluated by a doctor.”

What Is Joint Pain? Joint pain is a feeling of discomfort in one or more joints of the body. Made up of ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bursas and the synovial membrane, joints allow the bones to move. Painful, stiff joints can be incapacitating. According to Jessica Herzinger Loncar, MS, PT, Cert. MDT, OCS, coowner of Stability Pilates & Physical Therapy in Atlanta, “Signs of joint pain can include pain or tenderness in a joint that might be aggravated by movement or activity; inflammation indicated by joint swelling, stiffness, warmth and/or redness; joint deformity; range of motion or flexibility loss; and Crepitus (creaking, popping or snapping in the joints).”

how mild or severe can it be? Joint pain can be classified as acute or chronic. Acute joint pain is pain that occurs more suddenly whereas chronic arthralgia is joint pain that lasts three months or more. According to Christopher Haraszti, MD, a DeKalb Medical Orthopedist, "The acute onset of joint pain is usually

the result of some injury. It can also be caused by other conditions such as gout or even infection. A joint infection called a septic joint can be characterized by swelling, pain, decreased motion and fevers. An infection in a joint can be caused by bacteria being directly introduced such as with a deep cut or it can be caused by bacteria in the blood stream. A septic joint is a medical emergency and if left untreated can quickly result in permanent destruction of the joint and can even progress to become life threatening. Septic joints are usually treated with surgical drainage and cleaning followed by antibiotics." Haraszti goes on to explain that chronic joint pain is joint pain that lasts longer than three months. Chronic joint pain has many causes including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis also called Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD). Chronic arthritis can also be due to a systemic condition such as leukemia or bone cancer. The term arthritis is a general term that refers to inflammation in a joint. There are many types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis and osteoarthritis. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s own cells attack the synovium and cartilage and over time can be disabling. Modern medicine has developed several newer drugs that are proving very helpful in preserving function in these patients. Most drugs for rheumatoid arthritis work by slowing the body’s cellular “attack” system. Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of arthritis. It typically affects people who are older; however younger patients can get arthritis as well, especially as a long term effect of damage to the joint caused by a severe acute trauma, such as a broken bone that involves the joint itself. "Osteoarthritis or DJD at its most basic level is characterized by loss of the cartilage covering of the end of the bone," says Haraszti. "To think about what DJD looks like, imagine the end of a fried chicken leg. Once you remove the skin and meat there is a white shiny rubbery covering at the end of the bone. This is what the ends of your bones look like as well.

know where your pain is coming from Arthritis: recurring joint inflammation. There are more than 100 types. The most common are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis as well as gout. Aging and weight gain are some common causes, so are heavy lifting and poor posture.

Inflammation: the process of white blood cells incorrectly targeting healthy tissues, which can lead to arthritis. Marked by redness, swelling, joint pain/ stiffness or loss of joint function. This may also be associated with some flu-like symptoms.

Osteoarthritis: (degenerative joint disease) most common form of arthritis. Associated with deterioration of cartilage in the joints, most commonly in the knees, hips and spine but can happen in any joint. Marked by pain, aches and soreness during or after movement or inactivity.

Rheumatoid arthritis: occurs on both sides of the body, usually experienced in hands, wrists and knees. Characterized by soreness or swelling, stiffness after prolonged inactivity and fatigue. Inflammation can produce excessive joint fluid and narrowed space between bones over time causing them to painfully rub together.

Fibromyalgia: pain or stiffness in the muscles without damaging joints. Muscle pain in the body along with anxiety, fatigue, tenderness and sleep problems are common signs. Women are 10 times more likely to experience it than men. Triggered by stress, poor sleep and sometimes weather.

At your joints, the two ends move against each other when you move your knee or elbow or hip for instance. They move against each other so smoothly that the coefficient of friction which is a measure of how two objects slide against each other is about the same for a joint as ice sliding on ice. In DJD, the smooth cartilage thins and cracks and eventually the underlying bone is exposed."

Can joint pain be prevented? “Joint pain can result from genetic predisposition but usually is a result of environmental factors (like athletic injuries, heavy labor, and obesity),” says Charles M. Pesson, MD, orthopedic surgeon at Pinnacle Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. While joint diseases like osteoarthritis are not strictly genetic, having a personal or family history increases a person’s risk for developing the condition. Aches and pains could also potentially develop from a flu or cold virus and even weather changes can sometimes cause chronic pain. Other contributing factors could be nutrition or your routine physical activity. “While genetic disposition might be contributory, I believe that personal lifestyle choices play a larger role in joint pain,” says Bruce L. Salzinger, DC, CCSP, of Chiropractic Healthcare of Buckhead. Lack of exercise, poor posture, stress, an unhealthy diet or a prolonged activity over the years (i.e. jogging) are just a few lifestyle factors that can cause arthralgia. “Joint pain cannot be prevented completely,” notes Pesson. Nevertheless, there are measures that can be taken to minimize the amount of degeneration that occurs and prevent injury. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating nutritious foods and implementing a well-rounded exercise regimen will keep joints strong. “It is not uncommon for joint pain to be the result of relative overuse of a joint that has otherwise minor abnormalities. In this setting, avoiding overuse can be a very effective means of preventing pain,” adds Kovacic. When you move your body, it increases blood flow and lubricates your joints. If you are not use to weekly work outs, start with low impact movements like walking or swimming. Choose exercise machines like the elliptical machine that moves your body with minimal impact on your joints.

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

What You Should Know About Glucosamine Glucosamine is a natural compound composed of glucose and glutamine (an amino acid) and is an essential part of a molecule that strengthens and repairs the cartilage in your joints. As the degenerative osteoarthritis (OA) occurs, however, glucosamine production decreases. As with any supplement, it’s best to check with your doctor before taking it. • Glucosamine supplements are typically used for osteoarthritis, particularly knee osteoarthritis.

• This nutritional supplement is thought to help repair damaged cartilage by augmenting the body's supply 1:48:36 PM of glucosamine.

• Some stores sell glucosamine as a dietary supplement, but the benefit of this treatment is inconclusive. As a dietary supplement, the FDA does not regulate glucosamine sold in stores, so it’s best to consult with your physician before taking it.

• Early studies have shown positive but not statistically significant results for moderate-to-severe pain for individuals using glucosamine, but follow-up studies have yielded less beneficial results.

• A trial period of up to three months is enough to determine how helpful glucosamine is but should not be initiated without permission from your doctor.

“Maintaining a normal exercise plan can often prevent the effects of joint pain from becoming a problem for most individuals,” explains Tony Smith, the director of nursing at Reconstructive Joint Center at Piedmont Hospital. “Simple, regular activities such as walking or water aerobics for seniors can provide benefit. Check with your physician for recommendations based on your specific needs.” If you are experiencing joint pain already, you should avoid unnecessarily stressing your joints. Don’t keep your joints in the same position for a prolonged period of time or give your joints the chance to become stiff.

NOT QUITE SO YOUNG, BUT STILL ACTIVE? DON’T LET SORE KNEES SLOW YOU DOWN.

“When joint pain begins to impair mobility or otherwise keeps a person from doing the things they want to do, it may be time to seek advice from an orthopaedist,” says Smith.

what are my treatment options? Depending on the severity of your pain, there are several different remedies and treatments available. However, before you try any of them you should always check with your doctor first to see which one would be right for the pain you are experiencing. “One of the mainstays of treatment for joint pain is nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as naproxen or ibuprofen,” notes Kovacic. “All anti-inflammatory medication can have side effects and should only be used intermittently. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is a good pain-reliever that does not contain anti-inflammatory properties.” Severe pain that lasts longer than a few weeks may call for a stronger remedy. “Physicians can prescribe stronger medications as appropriate, and often suggest physical therapy to rehabilitate the affected joint and slow progression of osteoarthritis,” adds Katrina Baker, PT, DPT, of Northside Hospital. Do-it-yourself remedies for joint pain include hot and cold therapy (heating pads and ice packs) throughout the day, warm baths, stretching, adequate rest, massage and relaxation and elevation. “Homeopathic methods may include nutritional supplements (i.e. glucosamine and chondroitin), herbal remedies, specific anti-inflammatory foods, distraction/meditation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and acupuncture/acupressure treatment,” says Herzinger Loncar. "For most acute cases of mild arthralgia due to injury or overstressing the RICE method is useful," says Haraszti. "This treatment consists of Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Anti inflammatory medication such as ibubrofen can also help to relieve pain." Whatever you choose to do, don’t let the pain go for too long untreated, as the condition may worsen leaving you with a more serious case of pain than you bargained for.

If the Pain Won’t Stop… Have You Ever Considered Seeing a Chiropractor? If you’ve ever thought about going to a chiropractor but you’ve hesitated because you weren’t sure it was right for you, please read on... My name is Dr. O’Hara McKenna. I’d like to show my appreciation for the warm welcome the community has shown me by announcing for the month of August as Community Appreciation Month. It’s my way of saying THANK YOU to the people who have been so helpful and mean so much. I hope this will benefit you and yours. I’ve agreed to “give away” (to anybody who asks for it) $200 worth of my services for only $20. That’s right – $20. I’ve helped many people in the Greater Atlanta area feel better and live healthier, more productive lives through chiropractic care. I would now like to introduce you to the many benefits my profession has to offer. For instance, chiropractic care may be able to help you if you’re suffering from any of the following conditions. • Migraine headaches • Lower-back pain • Sciatica • Carpal tunnel • Neck pain • Arm numbness • Arthritis • Herniated Discs • Degenerative Discs • “Whiplash” And a whole host of other problems, ranging from dizziness to ringing in the ears. These symptoms can be caused whenever the vertebrae in your spine are out of alignment, because this “misalignment” directly affects your nervous system. Fortunately, if you’re suffering from such problems or similar conditions right now, they may be relieved or eliminated by proper chiropractic treatment (commonly called “adjustments”).

What does this offer include? Everything. Take a look at what you’ll get... • An in-depth private consultation about your health and well being • A chiropractic spinal examination... • A set of specialized X-rays to determine if a misalignment in your spine is causing your pain or symptoms... (Nobody gives these kinds of X-rays FREE. They would usually cost you at least $100).... • An analysis of your X-rays and spinal exam results so we can see what needs to be done to help. • Helpful literature that shows how your body works and why you experience pain.... • Answers to all your most probing questions about chiropractic care and what it can do for you.... The appointment won’t take long at all. And like I said, we normally charge $200 for this (most of which just covers the cost of the set of X-rays). But now, as part of this one time offer, you can come in and find out for certain if you need chiropractic care and how it can help you eliminate the pain you’re feeling.

MEET THE DOCTOR O’Hara McKenna, D.C. a graduate of Life University in Marietta, GA where I obtained my Doctor of Chiropractic degree. I also have a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Physiology from Florida State University. I am state and nationally board certified and hold additional certification by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association which allows me to treat pregnant women and children. I have a deep passion for and am a speaker on women’s health issues such as fibromyalgia and migraine headaches. I am a wife and proud mother of a fouryear-old son and a 9-month-old daughter.

DOES CHIROPRACTIC REALLY WORK? Absolutely! When you come in I’ll provide you with studies that show why chiropractic is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof” on how well chiropractic works is what the patients say about it.

A MIRACLE FOR ME I came to Back 2 Back about two months ago. I was in such bad pain Dr. McKenna could hardly touch me. I could not even get out of bed in the morning without being in tears, and I could not sleep at all. Now I am mostly pain free and I fall asleep and wake up pain free! It has been a miracle for me. Melina Wilkinson, Kitchen Designer, Dunwoody GA

HEADACHES AND PAIN When I first began treatments I had extreme neck, shoulder, arm, and wrist pain. I also had continuous headaches, hip pain, and leg pain. My headaches are very rare, as well as my neck and wrist pain. I still struggle with hip pain, but it is improving. One of the biggest improvements is that in three years I haven’t been sick… not a cold, virus, flu, etc. I love that!!! Thank you to the kind, caring staff at Back 2 Back! We appreciate your care. Melea Eckard, Executive Assistant, Duluth GA

LOWER BACK PAIN I suffered from frequent lower back pain which was becoming more extreme with time. Chiropractic care has become my most important healthcare. I now have no pain what so ever. I can jog much faster, sleep better, and feel fantastic over all. I will maintain chiropractic care for the rest of my life because I believe it is

vital to the overall healthy functioning of my body and psychological state of mind. Allen Ziama, Software Engineer, Atlanta GA

GUARANTEE OF GREAT SERVICE Obviously we can’t guarantee results. No one can. But here is one guarantee we can give you and that’s a guarantee to give our best effort.

LIMITED TIME OFFER Possibly the only such offer this year! Obviously, with an offer like this we can’t afford to do it for very long, so we’ve picked August as Community Appreciation Month. If you’d to take us up on our offer and see what chiropractic can do for you, all you have to do is call our office and set up an appointment.

Call our 24-hour help line @ 770-391-2771 and tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Introductory Examination for the month of August. I expect to get flooded with appointments for this event, so please call me as soon as possible to be sure that you don’t miss out. Thank you very much, and I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more productive life. God Bless, O’Hara McKenna, D.C. P.S. Ignoring your pain won’t make it go away. Chiropractic care could help get rid of your pain quickly and easily. And now you have no excuse not to get started, because we’re going to give you over $200 worth of “start-up” services for only $20! This offer may never be repeated, so please don’t put it off if you’re currently in pain and need help. Now is the time to do something about it.

So if you’ve always wanted to “check out” chiropractic care and see what it can do for you, now is the best time to do so because..... Right now $20 will get you all the services I normally charge my new patients $200 for!

For a Limited Time Only for the month of August.

$20.00 will get you all of the services I normally charge new patients $200.00 for!

Breathing Life Into An Old Knee? It is amazing how many doctors are not aware or do not discuss the many available treatments for degenerated or arthritic joints. Simply put, the patient receives a prescription from one of many pain medications, then a corticosteroid injection and finally surgery. Next to Cardiovascular disease, Osteoarthritis is increasingly one of the most debilitating diseases out there today due to longer life expectancy, poor health habits, overweight, imbalance of joint function and overstrain. Osteoarthritis of the knee is the degeneration of the joint cartilage and bone which causes pain, swelling and limited mobility. This, in turn, negatively affects almost every aspect of life for a person suffering from this type of disease. When you think about it, we rely on our knees for just about everything, from climbing stairs and hopping into the bath tub to dancing the night away and chasing our kids around. Supartz treatment, commonly referred to as joint fluid therapy, employs a highly purified sodium hyaluronate which is very similar to synovial fluid. Synovial fluid surrounds your joints and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Research has shown that in some instances, increased synovial fluid in the joint may actually trigger healing by increasing the production of Chondrocytes, which are responsible for the production of cartilage!

Although several joint fluid therapies are available today, Supartz has a couple of things going for it that separate it from the pack: First, because Supartz has no synthetic component, the likelihood of an allergic reaction is extremely low. Further, Supartz has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, the active ingredient that makes these types of treatments so effective. So, why have you not been told about this potentially wonderful treatment? This question is often posed and the answer is this: An orthopedic surgeon goes to school to learn surgery. Also in most cases, because of Insurance & Medicare requirements, that surgeon may not operate on a knee until he/she has attempted several non-invasive alternatives such as steroidal medications, corticosteroid injections and physical therapy. It is possible that the reason so many surgeons go through the basic steps outlined above and skip even attempting Supartz; is to qualify the patient for surgery. Keep in mind that in the United States, we do 11 times more knee surgeries than in Europe. Why? Because as one non-surgical European orthopedist said, “We in Europe focus on regeneration of the joint vs surgery.” Most health insurance plans and Medicare cover joint fluid therapy treatment. businessnews Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta recently launched a new Concussion Program in June. This multidiscipline approach aligns patients with members from Emergency, Immediate Care, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Neurosurgery, Physiatry, and Sports Medicine. Highlights of the program include standardized tools to assess patients, as well as a nurse coordinator to help organize and communicate each child’s care across the delivery system. Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Andrew Reisner, MD, will lead the hospital’s new venture as Medical Director of the Concussion Program. The Concourse Athletic Club recently announced the completion of converting the water system in the four pools into saline, making the Club the only athletic facility of its kind in Atlanta to use this type of system. This healthy and more environmentally friendly arrangement proves to have more benefits over traditional chlorine pools. The state-of-the-art saline system eliminates the need to store and use harsh chemicals, but rather utilizes salts found in the ocean, maintaining a constant healthy and algae free environment. Emory Healthcare is planning a hospital expansion at its Clifton Road headquarters. The expansion will include a roughly 200-bed tower near Emory University, a new emergency room and new operating rooms. The center is scheduled for completion in April 2013. My Give Back Story: Mustard Seed Communities By Savannah Woodworth When I first applied to go on the Jamaica mission trip with my high school, I thought that it would be fun to go down to the Caribbean for a week, play with kids, and hang out with my fellow classmates. I thought that we could go down to Jamaica, do some manual labor, and come back with a couple of fun stories. Before I left, many people told me that the experience would be life changing but nothing could have prepared me for what happened. To spend time with children who literally had nothing, no home, no family, no worldly possessions, and to see how much joy they possessed was one of the most powerful things I have ever experienced. Going down to Jamaica, we expected to change the kid’s lives, but what we did not expect was an experience that would so positively and completely change our lives.

Volunteer Spotlights The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to finding the cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. The Foundation ranks third among leading health non-profits in the percentage of expense devoted to research toward a cure, and more than 81 cents of every dollar the Foundation spends goes to mission-critical programs. Volunteer programs with CCFA’s chapters range from planning fundraising events, organizing local support groups and administrative duties. Whatever your skills and interests are, there is a place for you. Details: (404) 982-0616, www.ccfa.org, Georgia@ccfa.org

The Grant Park Conservancy The Grant Park Conservancy (GPC) began as a group of concerned Atlanta residents who recognized the need to protect Grant Park, Atlanta’s oldest city park, from the demands of growing use and declining maintenance. The Conservancy works to raise funds to carry out its mission and provide an enjoyable green space for families, visitors and residents of nearby neighborhoods. Volunteers are the backbone of the Conservancy. Through the generous contribution of time, talent and treasures by hundreds of individuals, the Conservancy is able to utilize limited funds to focus on building the organization and investing in the park. my best journey Sabir Muhammad

U.S. Open Champion swimmer helps kids with a new book about learning how to swim When world-champion swimmer Sabir Muhammad set out to write an autobiographical account of his fear-turned-fascination with water titled Born to Swim, he had one thought in mind: to help kids. “I want to share my passion for swimming with parents and kids and describe the benefits every person realizes when they learn to swim,” he says. After nearly drowning as a kid, Muhammad went on to set records in the sport and today continues to share his passion for swimming. How long have you lived in Atlanta? I am originally from Atlanta. I went to elementary and high school here and my mom was born in College Park.

How did you get into competitive swimming? And how long have you been doing it? After learning to swim, my mom started working at a pool in an area of town known as Perry Homes. I would go to the pool after school and eventually I started swimming on a developmental swim league. I’ve been competing for nearly 27 years. How did the idea for writing a book for children first come about? I had a number of friends and family suggest I write a book. I once wrote for magazines and enjoyed it so I decided to write my story. Did you encounter any difficulties when writing this book? Writing this book has been one of the easiest and most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Publishing and marketing it myself is an entirely different story. Where do (did) you train? I started out training in City of Atlanta Pools, specifically MLK Natatorium on Boulevard. Now I do most my training at Emory University. You were the first African-American to compete on the varsity men’s swim team for Stanford University back in 1994 – how did you feel about that and did you feel you were making history? Stanford is an elite swimming program in every sense of the word. Back then my focus was mainly on our collective team goal of winning the NCAA Div. I championships. As for making history, I 66

always thought my place in history was as the first of many to come after me, at Stanford and other top college programs. How did you feel the day you first competed in swimming? The first time I competed I stopped in the middle of the race because I thought the race was too long. I was seven years old. What do you love about swimming? The water. It’s a giving sport. It provided me with my first job, lifeguard, a full scholarship to Stanford and a career as a professional swimmer and swim instructor. Tell us more about Swim for Life! and why you launched this initiative? I am deeply aware of the benefits swimming can provide to youth from different backgrounds and wanted to do my best to share the sport and my experiences with youth. Unfortunately, minority children and boys drown at disproportionate rates, it’s my goal to stop this trend. We also started a swim clinic at Grant Park pool for kids in 2009. What inspires you? Children who push themselves to improve, especially those with limited economic resources, inspire me. The spirit of those who dig deep to overcome obstacles in their lives is incredibly inspirational. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? I was told once that talent can only take you so far, achieving great things takes hard work and some luck. How do you help encourage first-time swimmers? I tell first-timers how easy it is and to relax, “You’ll be surprised how easily it comes to you.”

How did you recover from your near-drowning experience as a child and motivate yourself to get back in the water? I was forced. When my parents saw I had a fascination with the water and a willingness to jump into a river without knowing how to swim, they immediately put me in lessons because they knew it was likely I would try something very risky again.
